『I remember this as being a really enjoyable, fun movie... full of action and spectacular photography. You would THINK that with the popularity that Tom Selleck has reclaimed with the success of his Jesse Stone movies that all of his earlier works would be back in production, but n-o-o-o-o-o.

As we know, you can't buy "High Road To China" as a new DVD anymore. All that exists are various kinds of over-priced used copies, and many of them are in formats that cannot be reliably played on DVD players sold for use in the United States. And there are some offerings of "new" DVD's, but I've got serious doubts about what they originated from.

I've tried contacting some of these Sellers to get the answers to simple questions, like, "Is the movie in 4:3 (full-screen) format, or widescreen?", and, "Is this movie formatted in Region 1 or is it 'one size fits all?'". No replies! I suspect that a some of these offerings are cheap knock-offs that were illegally dubbed for sale... claims of "new, factory-sealed" mean nothing when anybody can get access to heat-shrink machines.

Poor Tom Selleck! It's so hard to buy many of the really enjoyable shows he's starred in -- especially the earlier ones. I guess that being a gun-toting, right-wing Conservative made him even more enemies in Hollywood than I'd thought.

『Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong have great chemistry in this movie. The adventure takes you across hostile lands by biplane with Selleck as a WWI ace and Armstrong as good a flyer as he. The scenery is spectacular and the action is fun. This is the way they should make movies. Also starring Jack Weston as an Ace Mechanic and Wilford Brimley, Robert Morley, Brian Blessed, Cassandra Gava, and Peter Llewellyn Williams. The music is good also. This is my favorite Selleck movie. I can't understand why they haven't released it on DVD!』

『Really been searching for a decent copy of this movie for years. No one knows why the movie companies don't release it in DVD and widescreen too. Something about not having been filmed right for widescreen. So just release it in any format is better than none. Maybe there are issues about who really owns the rights to this movie or who ever does might not want to share the profits with past actors, cast and crew..it's hard to know why someone doesn't want to make money in todays market. But you can purchase it probably bootleg from several places just have to google the title. I'm heading to ebay for under 15 you can get a version out of the country that plays on USA region equipment. I've read it's not the greatest copy but I've given up on Amazon ever bringing this movie. If someday it happens....I might want to update my bootleg version then. So that's all folks...off to the movies and oldies are the best goodies.』

『My grandson LOVES this film so much he wore out his first CD. This is the replacement.

I love it, too. The love story is endearing, especially with the wonderful music we don't get to hear very often. The background subjects, subtly shown in comedy, of super-sized meals, too much garbage and no exercise are things we should all address.

Definitely a great movie for all ages.』

(The Virtues of Wall-E far surpass some of it's story limitations)
『I must be in robot heaven (haha, I know, lame joke). With the use of CGI and today's technology, robots can really come to life like never before. Long sine the days of stop motion being used to show the first Terminator in the original movie (like most, the second one is the best to me). Or maybe it's my discovery of robots in the Transformers movies, I can't imagine why. While Terminator 2 and other robot movies still aren't dated at all, CGI can show that robots can do all kinds of things before. So leave it to Pixar to make a visually stunning blend of . Even if it is has (ugh!) love story moments.

First off, as a romance movie, it's passable. For the most part, I HATE (that's in ___________ caps for a __________ reason) romance movies, and all of their terrible, cliched, and hackenyed drawn out bull_______. In my opinion also, kissing and $#% scenes are the ultimate in third person syndrome. Wall-e had some really cringeworthy moments I thought, that made me roll my eyes, but aside from that, I'm going to have to say I didn't really mind the romantic moments as much as I do in other movies (Nicholas Sparks, ). And of course, it's way better than the classic Disney princess movies, with zero magic in their soulless trek of damnation to kill my soul. The robots themselves are all designed beautifully, as you believe that Wall-E is easy to love, EVE is sleek and has the coolest gun ever (seriously, that thing can do some damage), and the assorted robots, from Bern-E, the giant Wall-E's, and everything else, are all very memorable. Maybe the third rate Hal knockoff isn't the greatest in the world, other than that, robots everywhere, and damn cool ones at that.

However, even though there is some romantic moments, it still has plenty of Pixar greatness, as well as great entertainment, a Pixar staple. Morever, Pixar's latest is for kids and adults, like many other Pixar movies before. I'd say that this movie leans more on the adult side more than Up, Finding Nemo, or Toy Story, although there is no question kids will love this picture as well as the adults. Sure, some the humor is lame, but, for the most part, it's lighthearted story really works on many levels. People (even myself) will obviously love seeing a robot with many human qualities, romance lovers will love seeing two robots share love (meh), and some people looking for some message will love seeing the desensitization of the people on board and the effects of environmental problems. All the way being entertaining throughout.

Visually speaking, the world of Wall-E is stunning. When I first saw this in the theaters, I was pretty jaw-dropped at the barren landscape that first showed up. The world is so dry you could probably feel it on your tongue. Like many other Pixar movies, the world comes to life yet again, as that is always something Pixar does so well, is making a world believable and great to live in. MOving on from that, looking at the spaceship, it's design reminds me of the interiors in the 2001 movie, and being a fan of that look greatly, I appreciate it a lot. The spaceship actually looks pretty cool and grand, and the space scenes themselves are distant, massive, and seemingly endless, like space should be. Looking at all of their other movies, it's no wonder they are the masters of showing unique, different worlds . From a world populated by cars, toys, bugs, superheroes, sea animals, and monsters, they once again show that they do it so much better than their competitors (the "worlds" of Over the Hedge, Ice Age, and Madagascar has no imagination. *spits*).

While I was not impressed with Wall-e as I was with Ratatouille and Cars, I feel that Pixar still makes great movies. ANd while this movie is overrated in some senses, definitely not worth to be ranked within distance of Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Seven Samurai, or Citizen Kane on the IMDB, I must say that Pixar continues to make great movies that really do so well in today's movies that are constantly released. Thank Pixar for making movies that actually stand out amongst most of the computer animated crap that is released this year.

(I Didn't Know We Had A Pool!)
『What a wonderful movie. I really didn't know quite what to make of the previews, I mean, very little dialogue to be heard, and the main leads were robots. After seeing the film, I love it. The lack of dialogue is actually a bonus, as you focus on the mannerisms and actions, however small, of the main characters, Wall-e and Eve. Visually the movie is stunning. The vistas of a barren Earth are amazing and desolate. Space is an incredible sight as well, with the best space travel scenes since Star Wars. The story has a superb point to it as well, as the eco-friendly message is very timely and to the point without being preachy. Wall-e's yearning for companionship is palpable, expressed in his repeated attempts to simply hold Eve's hand. Pixar continues to do the near-impossible, hold your attention and make you feel empathy and affection for robots and machinery. There hasn't been this sympathetic and lovable a robot character in a film since R2-D2 in Star Wars. The attention to detail is amazing. Everything is extremely well-thought out and designed. The growth and development of Pixar's art is incredible. They tell the best stories, with the absolute best in animation, on the most consistant basis. No-one can do it better, as their track record will attest. The ending is superb, with enough emotional sentimentality to catch you, without being too overdone. All in all, this is a fine film, one of the best films of the year. It certainly deserved the best animated feature oscar it received, and I think it deserved a best picture nomination as well, as it presented a timely message with enough humour and emotion to get the point across. Get this fine film and be carried away to another point in space with Wall-e.』

『I was rather dreading taking my kids to the movies, although I had heard that the movie was "cute". I also heard that there was little to no dialog, so that made my dread even worse. As I watched the movie, I couldn't believe it...Pixar has done it again, and even better than Toy Story. I laughed and cried along with my kids, and we all found something to love about this movie. It might sound corny, but this is a fantastic family movie that everyone will enjoy - and it covered science fiction to romance. I worry about adult themes or suggestive topics, even in children's movies, but I found nothing objectionable here. Even the littlest child will be entertained, and the adults will be as well. Good job, Pixar. We're getting the 3-disk edition for Christmas this year!』

『One of my parents favorite albums for sure, I'm honestly REALLY surprised there aren't more reviews for it here on amazon.

Maybe it goes under a different, more popular name that features more customer reviews, I don't know.

I like the music on here a lot, and I'm honestly not much of a disco fan. In fact, I don't like it hardly at all except for a few songs here and there by a few select artists.

Or maybe it's just a matter of it being a pop band that decided to create a disco album that makes it more appealing. Who knows!

Some of the nicest, smoothest, and catchiest vocal melodies you can imagine on a 70's album. Saturday Night Fever is a classic in almost every way! My parents have their own favorite songs, but to me, they're all good. Still, my parents probably like (and appreciate) this album more than I ever will, since I didn't grow up in the late 70's.』

『I'm surprised this one got such good reviews. I was excited to show it to my daughter since she LOVES Barney's Sing and Dance but she got bored very quickly. If you need to choose just one Barney DVD, I would definitely get Barney's Sing and Dance hands down - it's mostly all songs (very cute and fun) with lots of dancing plus lots of farm animals including a dog! My daughter is 17 months now but started watching it at around 14 months and now knows all of the songs. Mr. Sun is her favorite. Hope this helps!』

『Love, Love, Love this movie, so I decided to buy the 3D version for my kids this year! This was the biggest waste of money ever!! The movie picture and color are distorted and the 3D is almost non-existent! I couldn't watch with the "glasses", it gave me a headache. After a while even my 4 and 6 year gave up on the glasses! They wanted to use the glasses they got when they saw Toy Story 3d, but unfortunately, they did not work!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS IN 3D!!!!!!!!』

『Speaking about 3D portion only... I bought the standard 3D version of the movie... not the blue ray version. Within minutes we had to shut it off. The images are distorted. There are terrible shadows around the chraracters and objects. The glasses are made of paper, with red on the left eye, and blue on the right. The colors of the movie are distorted from the glasses. A complete waste of time and money. Tried this movie on two different televsions, and with two different DVD players.

DVD features
The most intriguing feature on the two-disc DVD is probably the six-minute sequence featuring a new song performed by the two engine-room characters, Smokey and Steamer. The animation is crude and the song is nothing special, but it does preserve the dual performances of Michael Jeter (he played both characters), who passed away during filming. One of the striking aspects ofThe Polar Expressis its use of motion-capture technology to turn real actors into animated characters, and that is examined in a significant portion of the five-part 11-minute featurette, in the "look at" Tom Hanks's multiple performances, and in an Easter egg that offers a side-by-side comparison of the actors in their motion-capture suits with the finished film in the "Hot Chocolate" number. There's also a live performance of Josh Groban singing "Believe" followed by an interview segment with him and composer Alan Silvestri, author Chris Van Allsburg providing a five-minute capsulization of his career, a PC game demo, and a kids' set-top game. I got this DIGISTOR Blu-Ray burner for my HD videos. I am a semi-professional videographer and I record some of my shoots/subjects/videos in High-Definition. At one point earlier this year, I realized that burning to DVDs just will not be enough for HD content - the 4-something gigabytes just won't cut it.

I decided to get DIGISTOR's blu-ray burner because I got one of their their DVD burners as well - External USB 2.0 Powered 8x DVD Burner by DIGISTOR - and I saw from their website - [...]- that they had a similarly designed Blu-Ray burner.

The reason I was so happy with the DVD burner was that it did not need a power cord for it. I am happy to say that this Blu-Ray burner is the same - no power cord. I use it for my HD video editing, connected to my PC. I also bring it around, it is very light and portable, on my shoots should there be a need to burn output onsite.

It's plug-and-play, no need for drivers - Vista and Windows 7 supports blu-ray natively. And I have yet to encounter a bad burn on this drive. Something to do with it's battery powered operation, but I also made sure it has enough power for burning, I got the dual USB accessory.

『If you are looking for a projector to replace your 1080I HDTV, or are planning on upgrading to HD service with a projector, plan on spending a bit more money than this. The NATIVE RESOLUTION of this projector is 800x600. This means, even though it will accept a 1080I signal, it will DOWNSCALE(compress) the image to fit the maximum physical resolution of 800x600. Your resolution will be higher definition than if you were watching on a standard TV, but it will not be a true 1080I picture.
If you are just looking for a cheap projector to hook up for fun, like to a WII, or for kids movie parties or whatever, this is a great deal since it is compatable with just about everything.

I just wanted to give you all a heads up, please make sure whatever projector you are buying, meets your 'native resolution' (maximum true definition) needs.

『I purchased the projector for my son's birthday party sleepover. We wanted to have his guest play the Wii outside on the garage door. The delivery was FAST. Set up was easy. The day of the party, I just knew something would go wrong with it......but it didn't. The graphics are awesome in the dark. The input for sound is standard. When you increase the volume too high you hear a humming sound. That problem is fixable. My husband plugged in a speaker that we had in the basement and the kids went wild with the sound and graphics. The projector is compatible with our Wii, PS3, and dvd player. We don't have the Xbox 360 so I don't know how well it would work with that system. Overall I was a bit skeptical, but we are throughly satisfied with the projector.』

『This motion light is great!! Not only that it turns on the light when it detects motion, it also records a video clip on an SD card. Not an HD video, but good enough to identify the intruder and see the sorroundings.
You can choose to have 2 different warning voice announcement or a barking sound. You can select to have either the light, video and sound during the day and/or night.
It has 3 AAA batteries as time stamp and video recording backup in case of power failure.
It has a red LED indicator to let you know when the batteries are low.
It has another indicator light to tell you the status of the SD card.
Super easy instructions (someone said something negative about the instructions on another review. Maybe they had an old version or "something").
Good quality materials and craftsmanship.
I hightly recommend it. Instead of just spending the money on a simple motion light, you can get video and sound features.
The only issue that I had is they do not supply software for Widows Vista 64-bit.
I had to use my old laptop with XP to set up the correct date and time.
The program that came in the SD card is setup_1109 for Windows XP, but you can go to their website and download the one for Vista. Unfortunately this program is only for Vista 32 bits and not for my new computer wich uses Vista 64 bits.
This program that contains the driver is used to set up the correct date and time. Without it, the unit will still record the same way, but is going to show the incorrect date and time on the video clip.

『I bought this same unit at Sams for under $30 and it wasn't even worth that amount. The instructions were completely worthless and absolutely wrong in most areas. The actual hardware was of poor quality...the screws were so soft that they immediately stripped. The housing did not have enough room for the internal wires, so you couldn't shut the unit together on the final step. On top of it all, the camera quality is very low quality. This unit is a horrible product. Please stay away.』

『The unit has good motion detection and that is about all. The instructions do not work for the unit setup so you have to call Support. Support is good however. The really bad thing is the camera resolution. My three year old cell phone camera has better resolution. The video is washed out if the subject wears a white or light colored shirt. Anything within 8 feet or so is washed out. Beyond 12-15 feet the video poorly renders the subject.』

(Great Filtering Capability...Poor Quality Hardware)
『We watch all the movies that are PG-13 and above with this player. With 2 kids in the household, it's the only way to watch movies with objectionable material. The PG rated movies and below, we get the Blu Ray discs and watch it on the Samsung Blu Ray player. Why? Well, the picture quality of this DVD player is not that great. I wish the company would come up with a newly designed player with HDMI capability. I'm feeding this DVD player into the Harman AVR 254 and upscaling it to improve the picture. It helps a little, but then when we watch the same movie on the Samsung Blu Ray player, the picture quality is a big improvement. However, it does what is advertises - it allows you to adjust the level of profanity, nudity and voilence from an easy to follow on screen menu.

Pros - Great filtering capability. Easy to use. Fairly priced.

Cons - 'OK - I guess' video quality. No HDMI connections.

Although, I care a lot about video and sound quality in my home theater setup, it is far more important what my kids watch. I'm hoping Clearplay comes up with a better quality product with similiar filtering capability. Until then, this does the job better than any other product in the market.

(Nice Idea, but Player Might Die On You, Filters Sometimes Don't Load)
『The idea sounds wonderful. But here's my experience:

1. I've had a lot of problems getting the filters to load on the player at times- sometimes it would just hang when I'd put the USB filter stik into the DVD player.

2. I really liked the DVD player for a while (it even had an optical out + component video), but.... the player itself died after about 9 months. Plugging it in now does nothing, and it has my DVD prisoner inside. Clearplay only gives a 90-day warranty, so beware! I had the "updated" model DVD player as well- CP427BUSB that's supposed to "resolve all the problems."

3. However, if you're after the 90 day mark, they'll usually offer you another "free" DVD player if you buy another year's service though. (about the cost of the DVD player, roughly.) Given #1 above though, I decided to let dead dogs lie. You'll have to ask yourself whether you want to take the chance that they'll continue to be nice enough to send you new players.

I hope these guys get their act together because their business model seems like it's really a good idea, and there's definitely a market for this. They need to take the hit for bad merchandise and not push that off on the customer though.

From what I have heard from other Clear Player customers we are not the only ones who have had bad luck with customer service and getting a player that actually works.』

『Wowsers. If you told me that Korean children who born almost twenty years after the last Indiana Jones film would dig this playset so much, I wouldn't have believed you - and yet, here we are.

I am an American teaching English in a small Korean town. I bought this playset as an Indy fan and to show it to my kids. They went nuts over it. They love the 'boulder action' especially, and never hesitate to flip over the 'quicksand' feature and the hidden stairs.

Would I have liked a few more features? Sure, maybe like the throne room that appears at the end of the picture, or maybe some kind of 'escape route' the figures could slide out of. Also, the 'whip swing' that the characters can haul about on pulled off after less than an hour - be ready re-tie it. But you know what? My students love the thing. And that alone makes it a great toy.

It comes with two figures, a well-detailed Indy and an Ugga (?) Warrior. It can actually make for an iteresting conversation as to where the warrior is from - Peru, I think - which can then lead to discussions about geography (the kids think he's an early Native American).

I picked this up on Amazon for an amazing 24.99. Definately worth the price.』

『Our 3 year old daughter loves this book. She now runs around chanting, "Say Please!" The only problem is she now thinks that every time you want something you will get it as long as you say ,"Please." It is very cute, so now we tell her, "Thank you for using your manners, but you cannot have that right now, lets go do something else." It is a nice story to reinforce our teachings of saying please and thank you very much--or as she puts it, "Thank you much!"』

『First, be warned: this is nothing like the movie. Some of the characters are the same, but this book does not follow the same linear, safe direction as the film. Most of the events of the movie don't even take place in the book. This is a memoir of the truest sense, in that the author explores simply her own understandings of her experience, her illness, and her surroundings. Kaysen's diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder, although not discussed until the final chapters, is the overall theme of this book. Kaysen, like many of her fellow patients, is straddling the line between sanity and insanity, between the world outside the hospital and the world inside. She identifies with both the other patients and the nurses, who each represent the world they inhabit. Even though she feels a kinship with her fellow "insane" patients, she also longs for the sense of normalcy that the nurses bring in from the outside.

Although she is declared "recovered" upon her discharge in 1969, Kaysen freely admits that once you're insane, that other world never really disappears. It hovers around the edges, and even affects people who have never been inside a hospital, as if she carries a "crazy cloud" around with her. Kaysen explores the difference between insanity of the brain and insanity of the mind, arguing that each need to be treated differently. She also includes actual documents from her medical records from her time at the hospital, which provide an interesting backdrop for the narrative of the so-called "insane" person. This isn't The Bell Jar. There is no real mental breakdown, no literary examination of one's own insanity. Although Kaysen does explore her own illness to a degree, this is mostly an exploration of the dual worlds that mentally ill people must inhabit: the world of the sane, and the world of the insane.』

『This is a very interesting memoir of a woman who was hospitalized in a
psychiatric institution from the age of 18 through 22 years old based on
a psychiatric interview given by a psychiatrist who had never met her be-

Girl, Interrupted: the book, the movie, the real life behind the story, and a rant against the mental illness system


You may have heard of the book: Girl, Interrupted.

You may have seen the movie of the same name.

The book came out in 1993, the movie, in 2000. The book was re-issued at the time of the movie debut.

This was based on a memoir by Susanna Kaysen, a young woman in the late 1960s who lived in Cambridge, Mass. and was hospitalized at the famous McLean Hospital, in Belmont, Massachusetts, the psychiatric institution affiliated with Harvard University.

When the movie came out, people I know said:

Oh yeah, I remember Susanna. So and so dated her. I remember when all this happened to her. Great book. Terrific movie.

Susanna Kaysen grew up in an upper-middle class family in the Cambridge area of Massachusetts. Her parents were professional and well-to-do. Her father was director of an institute in Princeton, N.J. Not sure what position he held in Cambridge, but it was not dissimilar. Her family lived on Wendell Street in Cambridge, which is in the Harvard area. They had moved one year earlier from Princeton, New Jersey.

In the mid 1960s in this part of the world, and affiliated with the movers and shakers of the intellectual power structure of this area, her parents were status oriented, and likely cool, distant, or just clueless as to who their daughter really was.

Susanna Kaysen wanted to be a writer.

She overdosed on vodka and aspirin and ended up in McLean hospital. She was 18 in 1967, the tail end of the worst years in the mental illness system.


The movie makes some significant departures from the book, and the author, Susanna Kaysen, was quite upset about those, mainly about the movies' melodramatic tone, and also with the event of Susanna (Winona Rider) and the sociopath Lisa (Angelina Jolie) running off together, which never happened.


Susanna had an affair with a professor, apparently giving him rim jobs, and was confronted by the professor's wife about this.

Susanna was a sensitive girl, surrounded by parents and a society insensitive and largely unaware of her needs. Though she technically signed herself into the hospital voluntarily, she was not able to leave on her own free will. She basically had to sign herself in. She spoke to a psychiatrist her parents recommended, she recited the section I included below as an excerpt, and she was told to sign herself in.

The hospital in the movie is "Claymoore" but it is McLean Hospital in the book, with actual documents from Susanna's life, including the admitting document of an 18-yo girl, who presented with:



"psychoneurotic depressive reaction, personality pattern disturbance, mixed type, R/O undifferentiated schizophrenia," and was finally diagnosed with borderline personality.



According to the DSM-IV, the current version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published by the American Psychiatric Association



psychoneurotic depressive reaction: - not in the DSM- IV, 1994. The DSM manual current at the time of Kaysen's hospitalization was the DSM-1.

personality pattern disturbance, mixed type: - not in the DSM-IV.

undifferentiated schizophrenia: - this is in the DSM-IV, but it was considered as R/O (Rule out) only. I consider this to be a garbage diagnosis; most dx of schizophrenia are either paranoid or catatonic.

borderline personality: - this is in the DSM-IV, below.

301.83 describes a prolonged disturbance of personality function, characterized by depth and variability of moods, typically involving unusual levels of instability in mood, such as "black and white" thinking, or splitting - chaotic and unstable interpersonal relationships, and behavior, as well as a disturbance in the individual's sense of self. In extreme cases, this disturbance in the sense of self can lead to periods of dissociation. These disturbances can have a pervasive negative impact on many or all of the psychosocial facets of life. This includes difficulties maintaining relationships in work, home, and social settings. Attempted suicide and completed suicide are possible outcomes, especially without proper care and effective therapy. Onset of symptoms typically occurs during adolescence or young adulthood.

It is also noted that in cases of overdosing or cutting, that the diagnosis of borderline personality should not be applied.


I onsider the dx of Borderline personality disorder to be a wastebasket diagnosis.

Every symptom or behavior above can be attributed to stress, PTSD, abuse, or other environmental cause, none of which are the fault of the patient.



Most people in counseling or psychiatric care only need the following:

To socialize with people and to have meaningful work.

Isolation will drive a person nuts.

Lack of meaningful work leads to low self-esteem.

The combination of isolation and low-self esteem, especially when combined with an environment that does not understand the person, is not a recipe for a good outcome.


There was really nothing wrong with Susanna Kaysen, yet she spent 18 months in the hospital, paid for by her parents, and/or her health insurance.

James Taylor, and later Kate and Livingston Taylor also enjoyed stays at McLean Hospital, a place, James Taylor said was where rich parents put their kids when they didn't fit in. Not far from the truth.

In fact, in the case of the Taylors and with Susanna, it was the absolute truth.

There were decades in which husbands who were tired of their wives (who often became lonely and depressed) could get them institutionalized. Parents who didn't understand their children institutionalized them. Minorities and the poor, who are most often the most misunderstood of all, and acting out because of the abuse the poverty and their status in society heaps upon them, were also heavily institutionalized, usually in the county hospital system.

There are people with actual mental disorders, mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar illness, but Susanna was not one of those.

In the book and the movie, her boyfriend (a young guy her age, not the professor with whom she has an affair), want her to leave.

There is a lot wrong with a professional field, especially one dealing with human relations and the human psyche, in which so much has changed, in which a field could be so very wrongheaded not so very many years ago.

I should reframe that statement to say: I should be grateful that the mental health system has improved its diagnosis and treatment of people who are misunderstood, instead of treating them with professional blinders.

At McLean Hospital with Susanna, among others, was a young girl who had thrown acid on her face, an anorexic young woman who was sexually abused by her father and who later hangs herself in her apartment after she leaves the hospital when Lisa mercilessly accuses the girl (Daisy) of having enjoyed having incestuous sex with her own father, but most of the young woman on the ward are not actually mentally ill. There was also the sociopath, Lisa, the most seriously so-called 'disturbed' and I suspect, among the most seriously abused by her family.

Some of the movie was actually filmed in Belmont at McLean Hospital, but most was filmed at Harrisburg State Hospital, and the town scenes were from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.

There was some front-door film footage of the actual McLean Hospital.

Jolie received an Oscar for her role as Lisa, as best supporting actress in a drama.

Most people of that era (1950s - 1960s - pre 1970s) who sought counseling, psychiatric help or who entered psychiatric institutions were often more the victims of their environment than actual sufferers of serious mental illness.

Yet the system at that time failed to recognize the difference between a shy or misunderstood person brought up in a cold, hostile or abusive environment who made suicide gestures (overdosing or cutting) and a person with actual psychosis.

I am not going to defend the mental health profession of those days for their ignorance. They were professionals who were brought up in affluent environments, who studied with blinders, who never thought out-of-the-box, and who treated many people poorly, both in their offices and in the hospital settings. Many never tried to think out of the box.

Sadly, this is often the case, still. The diagnoses are different, perhaps a bit better, but many in the field are not necessarily well-suited for their job, with many themselves being shy, or not particularly well-adjusted, or acquainted much with the real world of people and problems. Most are outsiders trying to look in, rather than insiders looking in.

Only insiders looking in actually know the score. The vast number of outsiders trying to look in can do more harm than good.

Susanna was fortunate in that she was in a private hospital, rather than a state facility, where people were routinely given ECT therapy, which was much more common and much more damaging than now. Many were given ECT therapy in private hospitals, also during those years, but it was even more rampant in the state facilities.


In both the book and the movie, Susanna's boyfriend both confront her by saying she really needs to get out of the hospital - that the hospital is simply using her, that there is nothing wrong with her, and that if she doesn't leave, the hospital will keep her forever.

The book and the movie end with an epilogue that within a few years, in the 1970s, all of Susanna's co-patients had been released from the hospital.

Susanna's writing is simple, direct, entrancing.



In the first chapter, Toward a Topography of the Parallel Universe, the book opens:

"People ask, How did you get in there? What they really want to know is if they are likely to end up there as well. I can't answer the real question. All I tell them is, It's easy.

And it is easy to slip into a parallel universe. There are so many of them: worlds of the insane, the criminal, the crippled, the dying, perhaps of the dead as well. These worlds exist alongside this world and resemble it, but are not in it.

My roommate Georgina came in swiftly and totally, during her junior year at Vassar. She was in a theater watching a movie when a tidal wave of blackness broke over her head. The entire world was obliterated -- for a few minutes. She knew she had gone crazy. She looked around to see if it had happened to everyone, but all the other people were engrossed in the movie. She rushed out because the darkness in the theater was too much when combined with the darkness in her head.

And after that? I asked her.

A lot of darkness, she said.

But most people pass over incrementally, making a series of perforations in the membrane between here and there until an opening exists...In the parallel universe, the laws of physics are suspended. ..Time, too is different. It may run in circles, flow backwards, skip about from now and then...Another odd feature of the parallel universe is that although it is invisible from this side, once you are in it you can easily see the world you came from. Sometimes the world you came from looks huge and menacing....other times it is miniaturized and alluring. a-spin and shining in its orbit. Either way, it can't be discounted.

Not crazy or unorthodox or weird by any one's estimation today; yet, no one understood this at the time.


What does that say about previous decades?

Only now are some writers and some mental health professionals able to look at their field as skewed from human reality, as in the book: The Loss of Sadness: HowPsychiatry Transformed Normal Sorrow into Depressive Disorder. (Horvitz, Wakefield, Oxford University Press, 2007)

This book is being touted as a tour-de-force that will alter professional thinking.



Billiant. Absolutely brilliant premise.

And it is about darned time psychiatry came around to the obvious.


Susanna Kaysen, who at one time doubted a life could be made from boyfriends and writing, managed to do very well, making a life out of boyfriends and writing.

(A Great Novel)

『A breathtaking story from beginning to end. The author, W. Somerset Maugham is a wonderful storyteller and does not disappoint the reader once during the novel. This is not a love story but a tale of one woman's journey on the road to redemption. The protagonist, Kitty Fane reminds me of a British version of Scarlett O'Hara. Kitty's journey is not a light hearted one. The reader's heart is constantly in a state of flux as the indecisive Kitty always leans towards the wrong choice. This is a timeless work that I believe will be in my top ten of beloved novels for the rest of my life. I highly suggest picking up a copy and enjoying the vivid world left behind by Maugham.

(It's like chick lit...from the 1900s)
『Kitty is a spoiled, self-centered woman living in Hong Kong with her husband, Walter (whom she married in a panic only after finding her younger sister engaged before herself). Walter is a bacteriologist, and is as boring as he sounds; but desperately in love with Kitty. Desperately in love, that is until the day he discovers that she is having an affair. Kitty's life is soon turned upside down as she is forced to move with Walter to the heart of a cholera epidemic, with the almost certain risk of death. As if moving away from the city to a village of death isn't enough; Kitty finally understands that Walter is purposefully trying to kill her. Once she arrives in the village, however, Kitty finds that there is a lot more to life than parties and dresses and one-sided love affairs.

I really enjoyed this one. The book is very quotable, my favorite being: "She wished to despise him, because so long as she only hated him she knew that she was very near loving him...It is a great misfortune to have a heart." Or, at least quotable to me and my shredded heart (oh, it's way past broken). Anyway, this one spoke to me and I really liked to see Kitty's growth and coming to terms with her actions. Now on to the movie, where I bet Edward Norton won't make Walter so boring..』

(Human character development and spitual growth)
『This is a superb book, dealing with multiple themes around human relationships, character development, distinguishing love and infatuation, the transcendental experience, and the meaning of existence. That sounds like a lot but this small book covers a lot of ground.

Through a wide array of characters, Maugham explores the nature of human relationships. There a parental relationships where parents are overbearing and judgmental. Kitty, the protagonist of this novel, has such a relationship with her mother. She eventually marries just to escape her mother's judgments and criticisms. There are also unexamined relationships that are taken for granted and only later are seen in a new light. Such is the case with Kitty and her father. He is a judge and ample supporter for his family. Yet he is a status symbol for her mother and a source of income and support for Kitty. It isn't until Kitty gains in maturity and painful experiences that she eventually is able to even begin a genuine relationship with her father. Social roles of parent, child, mother, son, daughter, and father may often provide a social matrix for interaction but subtle violence and disregard and neglect may characterize the relationships that are seen to the outside world as loving and in fact those who dispense emotional violence and those who absorb emotional violence may never grasp the reality in which they are stuck, and thus characterize their relationships to family as loving when in fact, love is not present.

Growing up in such a home, Kitty seems oblivious to the compromise she creates when she agrees to marry a socially awkward but highly intelligent bacteriologist. He falls for her but she never really reciprocates with the emotional depth of her husband. She is young and self-absorbed and shallow in many ways, yet he loves her.

But Kitty has never given herself fully to another person, she has never been infatuated, she has never been out of control and in constant pain when she is away from her lover. Unfortunately for Kitty, she falls for a married diplomat who is highly self serving and manipulative. Charlie Townsend begins to dominate her every thought and she becomes lost in day-dreams of marriage to Charlie far away from the real world of their marriages. The ancient Greeks believed Jupiter gives mankind wisdom through painful experiences and Kitty is about to be educated. Having discovered that his wife is having an affair with Charlie Townsend, Dr. Walter Fane, is inwardly heart broken but he display a highly controlled exterior. He offers Kitty an ultimatum which has been carefully thought through for it helps reveal to Kitty how shallow is her relationship with Charlie. Walter insists that Kitty join him in a distant city which is being ravaged by cholera. She has no choice but to follow him. Yet this experience is the critical experience of her life as well as Walter's life.

Kitty meets a minor ugly alcoholic British official, Waddington, who eventually becomes her intimate friend and one of her guides toward herself. Waddington quickly picks up that the Fane's relationship is a disaster and he helps Kitty find meaning in her life as an aide in a French Catholic orphanage. He also gradually introduces her to Taoism and the concept of desire and connection being the source of much human pain and suffering. Kitty gradually goes through multiple stages of grief and anger to begin forgetting Charlie Townsend.

At the French Orphanage, Kitty also begins to grow and change in character as she cares for Chinese orphans and interacts with the highly spiritual nuns. Kitty observes that the nuns act calm and loving and gentle and supportive of all humans in all their interactions, but she sees that they are not attached. They are not emotionally bound to the children they serve, there love is a spiritual grace and transference from God to the children. They are willing conduit between God and suffering mankind. Thus they are able to love and let go, they care and then forget, moving onward to the next suffering soul. In this regard Maugham is certainly connecting the sublime nature of Christian non-attachment to the Buddhist and Taoist philosophies of detachment from the world. Kitty has several transcendental experiences, sometimes evoked by great beauty in the natural world or in vast vistas of man's interaction with nature.

Thus Maugham does something outstanding. He conveys how a person may grow in character by pain and self examination as well as how a person learns to integrate or experience the mystery, the unification with the unknown, the wordless and thoughtless mind of God that changes perception.

But like relationships, ever changing and growing, the transcendental experience is never complete or present at all times. Kitty longs for the serenity of the nuns, their spiritual and emotional centeredness, but finds that just like relationships, our glimpses into the mind of God are ever changing.

Maugham has selected to show us that a shallow self absorbed young woman can begin to glimpse the mystery of existence, the flow of pain and desire and attachment out of the human heart. Like the Buddha, she sees a corpse in the road, the reminder of our temporary status on this earth.

The test comes as Kitty realizes that Walter is in pain and that he must forgive her to move beyond the pain. She has moved and grown greatly if she now can empathize with Walter to the point that she sees fully his pain and sees the way beyond his pain. Just as Walter saw her infatuation with Charlie and the steps needed to reveal Charlie's lack of character to Kitty, she now sees that Walter has a broken heart and in his heart bears pain and anger, but more importantly, he is now willing yet to move beyond the pain and anger and move into a state of forgiveness. Kitty has reached the point of maturity that she wants this forgiveness, not for herself but for Walter. She has moved beyond herself absorption, her self definitions, and her own perceptions and like the compassionate Buddha, she sees into Walter's heart and knows how she must be healed.

Unfortunately, life is not predictable and Walter falls deathly ill with cholera. As he dies she urges him to forgive her, something that she needs but also something that she clearly sees that he also needs.

The resolution of the novel shows Kitty dealing with the consequences of her choices, the recognition of her own human frailty and needs, the separation from her mother's bonds, and the initiation of a genuine relationship with her father.

This is an outstanding work of literature, unwinding a profound and complex theme, revealing the nature of relationship to the self, to others, to the Tao beyond. No small achievement.

『If you're a big Hellboy fan this game could be what you're looking for, otherwise you probably won't find this particular game worthwhile. The game play itself is challenging, but not in a satisfying Mega Man 2 kind of way. Instead you spend most of your time fighting with the poor game design than anything. Like I said, if you're a big fan of the Hellboy universe, you'd probably be willing to overlook this games many flaws, but if you're just looking for an action adventure game, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.』

『Your basic simple hack and slash game, which is pretty entertaining. For those of you who hate games based on the movie, don't worry this doesn't happen here. This game has its own story and Hellboy still keeps his witty sarcasm throughout. There are a few glitches, like most games that were rushed to make the cinematic deadline. In fact, I had to restart the system at one point because one of the enemies got stuck in an area out of reach and I couldn't kill him, he wouldn't go away, and the game wouldn't allow me to move on without killing him. This doesn't happen often though and provides a good laugh, if it happens at all. The environments are visually really great, there are a few places to explore and a lot of variety to the game in terms of where you get to go -- from desserts to caves to cemeteries, and so on. Be prepared for a lot of enemies and different ways of getting through the environments. It's not a very sophisticated game, definitely mindless, but I had fun and although some will find it monotonous because of the same two button combat system I really enjoyed it and you may too.』

I would have died of boredom, had the game not been so short. It was about five hours, start to finish. Now let us speak of graphics. I got the PS3 to push a 46" HDTV. Comparing this game's graphics to Metal Gear Solid 4 or Assassin's Creed is a complete joke. It completely appears like this was hastily-made art thrown on top of generic models. The story arch is terrible. The only good thing in the game is the voice acting. So if you're you're a Hellboy super-fan, rent this game. If you're not, don't bother with it.』

『I thought this would be just a find and getter. I like interactine with the characters and going through the story. This animation is good but some of the mini games are kind of hard. You have to be quick with some of them. Being a kids game I think that this isn't a good game for the younger ones.』

『We love this game. My daughter is 4 1/2 years old and plays it without problem. The instructions can be read but they are also told to you which helps my daughter since she cannot read yet.
