Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Amazing Candle, Amazing Value!) 『To preface this review: when I enjoy something a lot, I like to analyze it for a proportional amount of time.
I'm addicted to the smell of my Ted Shred's, Beach Break "Blue" Candle. The unburdening smell is STRONG from start to finish and the 32oz. jar LASTS A LONG TIME. Furthermore, the proportions of the physical design, when viewed from the side with the logo, are masterful. I proudly display this masterpiece and truly enjoy the smell from my Ted Shred's Blue Surf Wax Candle.
If there's a downside to this candle, it would be that it's hard to "maintain," as a bit of wax never melts. Maybe two smaller wicks? Sometimes I like to add a burning match or two when the wick runs out to keep the party going but it's an inefficient affair. That being said, this is only a minor issue if you consider that, at present time, this candle's smell is 'curiously strong' and it lasts for a very long time.
I will also offer an operational, "best practices" tip to anyone lucky enough to possess one (or many! ...lucky one) of these candles: always place the candle on a flat surface because the candle's large flame can heat the glass to melt the plastic gasket around the rim which secures the metal top. This would only happen if you had it at something like a 45-degree angle for, say, about an hour. You ask, "how could this possibly happen?" Let's just say, hypothetically speaking of course, that one were to flip the lid over and use it as a stand, one could then easily become, "in the market," for such an angled set-up -- don't be.
I first picked up a 32oz Jar of the Blue stuff almost a year ago at Killer Dana Surf Shop when I was in Niguel. I grabbed a small, white 'coconuty' one as well... Currently living in Manhattan and having grown up in New Jersey, the best way that I can describe the white candle is that it's a consistently burning, yet consistently milder, montage of smells which echo the experience of a coconut airfreshner in a '99 Altima, on a 96-degree day, in Staten Island traffic (slightly more "moist" than Parkway traffic). I ask myself: did I get a "freak" candle that was bad? Did it start its life as a good candle but wasn't stored with care? Was it the TSA's equipment at John Wayne Airport? I can only guess/hope...
Bottom line: try the Wahini Pink one if that's what *your,* ornamentation is like but *don't miss* the Blue Surf Wax Candle! 』

The vinyl is very sticky so I used a plastic ruler to attach the letters to until I could position them on the wall. To make the names straight, I used a level and drew a pencil line on the wall. I did not need the adhesive that is often ordered with this product. I'm not sure of the purpose of the adhesive as the vinyl went directly on the wall with no problem. I would also think the letters could easily be removed.
I placed the names randomly on the wall and added scrapbook frames featuring some of my favorite pages randomly on the wall as well - very pleased with the outcome!』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Interesting!) 『This is definitely NOT your typical romantic comedy, which is perhaps a very good starting point. The story-line is not very original: two people meet with the intent of having casual sex and end up finding themselves more involved in some sort of relationship than they predicted (or wanted to). The screen-play is also not particularly original or interesting.
Still, the movie works very well, in large part, I think, thanks to the two main characters. David Wenham and Susie Porter are just perfect in their roles and they play very very well their parts. The so-called "chemistry" between them works remarkably well, which is essential, because 90% of the screen time is taken by them and only them. I also really liked the fact that none of the two actors are particularly beautiful or in any sense "super" (nor does the director try to make them especially so. Many close-ups are quite ruthless in showing lines and wrinkles). This makes the whole story so much more real and interesting. The minor characters (friends of his or hers) that also sometimes appear to "comment" on the craziness that is happening to their friends are also well played.
Overall, not a masterpiece but a very nice and well done romantic sexy comedy!』

(Almost Better Than Sex) 『I had high expectations of this movie as I've heard it praised from several friends. Yes, the main draw for me was Mr. Wenham - and I was NOT disappointed. This movie is funny, sexy and just pretty wonderful.

(How Many Have You Had?) 『This movie captures two people at a time in their life where they thought they might never be.
Meeting at another party, the same faces, the same old, same old..They would expect their liason to end in a similar fashion. The same old thing, a one night stand.
This meeting was different, a promise of nothing more than one night... Suddenly..a spark? A meeting of the minds? A comfort? The way these characters eventually relate, is through a mutual respect for each other, and a lust for each other. A wanting so inherent that words are not needed to express it.
They let their bodies do the talking.
What you get here, is a movie that hits the spot and talks to a generation of males and females in their late 20's early 30's.
The subtle hints of love and affection are there, and the acting flawless.

(A charmer from Down Under) 『The only bad thing I can say about this film is the fact that it took nearly four years for it to reach the US. The tag line pretty much sums it up -- what was intended as a one night stand turns into more than the participants expect. Sexy -- definitely (I may never look at wildlife documentaries quite the same way again); funny -- in many places hilarious, especially when examining the Mars/Venus aspect of burgeoning relationships (toilet seats, dressing time); and surprisingly sweet. The stars are charming, attractive and very real, both emotionally and physically (after years of plastic Hollywood types, you have NO idea how pleasant it is to see a good looking guy who is NOT Mr. Universe, and a good looking woman without augmentation), and are ably supported by the rest of the cast, particularly the actress (whose name I now can't remember, my apologies!) who plays the cabbie and doubles as a relationship counselor.
There's a saying that life is what happens when you're busy making plans -- perhaps love is what can happen when you're busy having sex, if you let it. (It's alive!! It's alive!!!) 『Mike Binder directs and stars in this amusing comedy about a ordinary married man who wants to experience new things with his wife, Mariel Hemingway (Tv's L.A. Law, Bad Moon), in the sex categorie. So the 2 have a threesome (menagetrois) and soon after Binder's wife cant get enough of it and he finds out he has created a sex monster. The cast is great, especially Hemingway in a role she hasnt played before. Binder is so enjoyable you forget the stupid stuff and your just watching him bumble away which gives the movie its energy juice. Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects, Spiders Web) has a supporting role as one of Binder's friends and Melissa Crider (A Boy Called Hate, Frailty) also stars as one of Hemingway's sexual partners. A guilty pleasure in some aspects. The highlights would have to be when Binder, his wife and the 3rd company are having she, so he leaves the room when he cant take the sex no more.』

I think it's funny how the husband is so estatic that he has a lesbian for a wife, until he's out of the picture.

On the DVD The Collector's Edition offers seven new featurettes (the previous Special Edition only had one documentary), beginning with a sit-down between director Rob Reiner and writer Nora Ephron waxing nostalgic on how the movie originated: He, recently divorced from Penny Marshall, was a miserable single man, while she was the screenwriter who rejected his initial pitch over lunch ("It was a shame," she remembers, "because we hadn't even eaten yet."). It's easy to see that Reiner is clearly Harry, and Ephron is clearly Sally: He's the squawking chatterbox and she's constantly corrects his memory (Sally's meticulous method of ordering food is also a direct rip-off of Ephron herself). Other featurettes show Billy Crystal's attempts to play Harry (or Reiner, as it were); location filming in New York; the love stories that served as interludes between scenes (again, the counselors-at-camp story is from Ephron's parents); the significance of the film over time; and more discussion on the film's famous question: "Can men and women really be friends?" Most of the stories from the featurettes are recycled in the new film commentary by Reiner, Ephron, and Crystal (Reiner mentions that the "I'll have what she's having" line, spoken by his mother, is in the top 10 of AFI's top 100 movie lines no less than five times overall), but the inclusion of Crystal, who contributed many improvised lines in the movie, makes for a nice easygoing repartee. (The chemistry between Alda and Burstyn make this a true gem!) 『Based on the 1975 Bernard Slade play of the same name, this screen adaptation stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn as a pair of married lovers, who meet once each year for 26 years. Though a movie about marital infidelity may not be one's cup of tea, this movie works because it doesn't focus so much on the lust-driven aspect of the affair, but more about two people who find themselves in a circumstance where they really care for each other, yet are strongly committed to their marriages. Alan Alda plays George, a married accountant with three kids, while Ellen Burstyn plays Doris, a California housewife.
The pair's relationship evolves over the course of 26 years, as each time they meet [in the movie, it kind of jumps every couple of years or so, beginning with 1951, then on to 1956...1961 etc], viewers get to see how George and Doris have 'grown' as individuals, and also how the years have shaped their relationship. They develop an intimacy that goes beyond physical closeness, sharing pieces of each other's lives, and confiding their innermost desires and worries. I truly came to care about both of these characters.
This is a movie that I first watched a few years ago, never knowing of its existence until I saw it on Netflix. And since then, I've watched it numerous times - drawn in part to the great comic chemistry shared between Burstyn and Alda, and also the wonderful soundtrack and archival footage of historical events through the years 1951-1977. This is one that will have you laughing and crying!』

Hearing this recently, "Paid Vacation" is unbelieveable prophetic on the current situation in the middle east - "Next Stop Afghanistan It's just a giant Oil Company scam" applies now more than it did 27 years ago when it spoke about the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.
If you have to have 1 Circle Jerks album (I recommend every single one of them) this is the one to get. Shoot for the split w/ Wild in the Streets as that one is pretty much critical to any punk collection.
This album however captures the chaos of their shows - I have seen them twice but the show I saw in late 1980s on the Wonderful Tour w/ Corrosion of Comformity, Slapshot, and Vice Grip at the now defunct Rat in Boston still reigns as one of the greatest concerts I have ever seen. The posers calling themselves punk bands now cannot inspire the phrentic mosh attack that was unleashed on the front row - despite nearly being killed there (seriously overcrowded and nearly crushed to death in the front row) I will always remember this show and hearing any song on this album brings the rush right back.
Bands today are a dime a dozen - I wouldn't be surprised if people 50 years from now still listen to this album.

Other than the title track, there are no songs which stand out and most of the writing, to me, is banal. Nothing on "Sex and Gasoline" really hits home the way the three aforementioned CD's do. If you do not have Crowell's other CD's, I suggest you get them prior to purchasing this one. The only reason I bought this CD was because: I already have his other music and I wanted to be familiar with these songs when I see him again in a few weeks. Hardcore Crowell fans might not agree or appreciate this review, but I am not into hero worship and call 'em the way I see 'em. Of course, your mileage may vary.』
(You Made Your Bed) 『Rodney Crowell's music always engages me. From "I Ain't Living Long Like This," his songs consistently capture my imagination. "I Know Love is All I Need"&"The Man in Me" both went to #1 on my personal top ten.
"Sex&Gasoline" is a restless set, with Crowell exploring things that intrigue and bug him. The liner photography with an old record player and a couple stacks of records with The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan staring out sets a tone of looking back. Bearing in mind that Dylan wrote a song "I Want You," Crowell's "I Want You #35" churns restlessly and builds into a furious workout, "Something changed you, laid you low, dulled your senses, made you slow, wrote your name down in the book, staked a claim on how you look; I can't blame you if you think I'd tie you to the kitchen sink, drain your pockets, drink your blood, drag you through the muck&mud; It must be said, you made your bed, but I want you." This is a dynamic restless rolling classic track! From there, Crowell slows the pace on the meditative "I've Done Everything I Can" where producer Joe Henry joins on vocals. The title track percolates cynically with Jay Bellerose's percussion adding sparkle, "Perhaps the convent, perhaps the knife, you shoulda coulda woulda been a rich man's wife." "I don't want to be somebody that I can't bear to be, I don't want to stand in the back if I can't sit down at the front, I don't want to wear the ball&jack&I don't want to punt," Crowell croons on the talk-sing "Who Do You Trust." The cover shows Crowell looking out from the edge of the bed with a girl with a beauty mark on her derriere. On the slow "Forty Winters" Crowell uses the image in his lyric, "40 winters, cold&dark, surround you like a beauty mark." The set closes with "Closer to Heaven," "I'm offended by buzz words like 'awesome'&'dude'" Perhaps unfortunately for him, Crowell is awesome, dude. "Sex&Gasoline" is an excellent set, churning, restless&looking for faith. Enjoy! 』

Given how many classic songs he's written in his three-decade career, it would be surprising if Rodney Crowell released a CD that was anything less than award-worthy --- his music has more hooks that a fishing lure. And his tight, wry lyrics are so right that, when I served on the membership committee at PEN a few years ago, Rodney was one of the first songwriters I suggested as PEN-worthy.
This time, the mere fact of the nomination is impressive --- radio stations aren't racing to showcase the music of any 58-year-old musician. And then there is the small problem of Crowell's narrowing appeal: He now makes music almost exclusively for grown-ups. On LINK Sex&Gasoline, for example, there's a song called "The Rise and Fall of Intelligent Design." It takes a certain breed of listener to care --- someone who hopes to shake a leg and get a clue.
I'm a fool for anyone who aims high, talks smart and has some miles on the tires. And a father of a young daughter is automatically interested in talking to the father of four girls. And who was once married to Rosanne Cash. Ladies and gents....Rodney Crowell.
Jesse Kornbluth: You had extreme success in your 20s. Now you're pushing the AARP Ages, and no matter how great your work is, the reality is that you won't be nearly as visible or commercially successful as young talent. How do you do the mental math on that?
Rodney Crowell: You mean, how do you explain a guy whose commercial peak was 20 years ago but whose artistic peak is happening now?
JK: Yes. Start anywhere...
RC: For me, the real deal is relevance. Money comes on the back end. And the thing to know is, in my 20s, when I was selling millions of records, I felt irrelevant.
JK: Ever think, 'I wrote hits once. Just because I don't seem to write them now doesn't mean I can't. I think I'll sit down and write a song for ...'?
RC: No. When people ask me how I make a living, I say, 'I get paid to trust the universe.' The truth about all those big hits is this: I never wrote one for any reason but to write the best song I could. 'Till I Gain Control Again' --- I was trying to be in a league with Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. They were good songwriters, and I wanted to be. So I understand what T-Bone Burnett meant when he told me, 'You must not be interested in money. Because if you aimed for the C and D students, you'd be rich.'
JK: The A and B students --- what do you serve up to them now?
RC: Now my songs are more about articulating the obscurity of my lost interior. My sensibility has changed.
JK: What happened?
RC: Small epiphanies that added up to a big one. In 1999, I decided I'd start doing work my kids could hold up as my legacy. And I moved from broad-stroke love songs to an articulation of my sensibility.
JK: This would be a C-student question, but considering your aims, maybe not. How much of the new CD is a character posturing and how much is what you really think and believe?
RC: Sometimes you get to act as a character as you deliver the narrative. But "Sex and Gasoline" --- I'm trying to tear that out of my heart. And "I've Done Everything I Can" was written directly to a daughter who put herself in harm's way.
JK: "Tired ol' story sad but true/We mama's boy's have got it in for you/Our faults are many our virtues nil/We never loved you and we never will" --- is that you?
RC: It is. It is. Hey, I've gone into therapy, because there was a time I had to understand 'we've never loved you and never will.' In an ongoing conversation with my daughter, I've said, 'Until a man is 38, he won't have any idea how he loves you. He might be looking for mother, he might be looking for shelter from the storm.' Anyway, that's my past.
JK: And yet, in concert, you sometimes sing with Rosanne Cash, and you were married to her from the ages of 29 to 42.
RC: We've maintained a civility and co-parented some girls. And to hear that voice and sing those songs --- that's a celebration.
JK: Those broad-stroke love songs?
RC: Well, railing against a duplicitous bunch of lying bastards --- it's not timeless art. It's art created for a time. I don't care much for serenity. But I do like timeless art, and I'd like to create some....』 『How many male singer-songwriters have the guts to write, "If I could have just one wish/Maybe for an hour/I'd want to be a woman/And feel that phantom power"?
