(A great lesson in Sex Pistology)
(This is the best Sex Pistols documentary but...)
(Even better than "The Filth and the Fury", I agree!)
(Better Than "The Filth and The Fury") I love the Classic Albums series and I love the Sex Pistols so when I found out they had a dvd for their one and only album I had to get it. I had read and heard nothing but good things about this dvd so I couldn't wait to add it to my collection. When I watched it I thought it was another great documentary about the album and you also hear a little bit about their history too. Everyone in the band is interviewed (except Sid ofcourse.) Rotten is extreemly interesting and hillarious as always. When you hear him talk you'll realize just how smart of a person he really is. Steve Jones plays some guitar and shows how he came up with some of the guitar parts for certain songs. Malcom is also very interesting to hear saying he didn't want to be a manager for the band but rather a mismanager. I always thought that guy was a quack. They talk about all the biggest moments such as the Bill Grundy show, God Save The Queen on a boat, and the artwork for the album including interviews with the artist Jaimie Reed. If you're a big Sex Pitols fan or just love this album then it is very essential you pick up this dvd. This is one of my favorites in my dvd collection. There are also plenty of bonus features including a hillarious story about Johnny Rotten meeting Freddie Mercury who was with Queen recording in the studio in the same building. You can't really go wrong here and the Classic Albums series whenever they document a good album are always good. Other titles in the series I liked were The Dark Side Of The Moon, Who's Next and Machine Head. This is a great DVD. Even long time Sex Pistols fans might get a new tidbit of information that they had never known. For the first time maybe in their lives, the members of the Pistols are very candid and maybe even a bit nostalgic, even though none of them are seen together and they are all interviewed seperately. Steve loves Johnny, but that doesn't mean he wants to hang out with him, Johnny is proud of all the members, and Glenn shows no hard feelings. Paul had the least amount to say, but what he said was direct and to the point. Sid Vicious gets very little time. He is seen in the live footage and Johnny talks about him in a short bonus feature. The only idiot on the entire DVD is Malcolm, but that's really no big surprise. He always has and always will be a tool.
We finally learn who played what on the album itself. Glen did play the bass guitar on Anarchy, and Steve played two seperate guitar tracks, one track serving as the bass.
They even tracked down the guy who did the artwork for the Pistols.
I think of all those in the band Steve has the most intelligent insight. He admitted that if they had kept Glen and did not do the TV show where they cursed on the air, the Pistols would have lasted longer and recorded more albums.
I came to my own conclusion that Glen was not fired for 'constantly washing his feet', but because he was the most competant musician of the group. Glen tried to teach STeve how to play what he called 'Beatle chords' and Steve refused to play them and just stuck with the major chords in bar form.
If I have anything negetive to say about the DVD, don't be taken in by the 'Play guitar in a day the Steve Jones Way'. Steve does demonstrate how to play a few riffs, and on his original Les Paul with the pinup girls. But would it have killed the camera man to have the camera straight on the guitar and not film the riffs at a 45 degree angle? I know how to play the songs anyway, I've had the original tab book for years, but the camera angle on the guitar on this sequence is terrible.
The boys are alive and well though and getting ready to do some shows soon (November 2007). On the DVD Paul actually looks pretty good and resembles any number of one hit wonder musicians from the 80's. Glen looks like a rather dapper chap and if you didn't know him, you'd think he was a sales manager and not a musician. Steve Jones looks more like a retired wrestler than a punk guitarist, and Johnny..... Well Johnny has aged some. His earlobes are dangling almost comically. As if he had been wearing 5 pound earrings for ten years, and it is obvious he has never cared about his hair, from his glory days until today. I don't know who painted the blue stripe, but Johnny is Johnny.
And saints be praised. There is not one film cell that contains any image of Nancy Spungen. It didn't go through the whole carrier and it mainly talked about their start and their relationships together which is great but didn't talk about the times and the chronological history of the pistols, their American tour and eventual break up.
You must to watch this along with "The Filth and the Fury" if you want to get the whole picture. One thing I really liked about this is you didn't have Johnny Lydon speaking about the history of the Sex Pistols with anger and spite of earlier interviews which distorted the truth, it was more like he was fondly reminiscing factually about being in the Sex Pistols and giving up his ego and telling of his faults.
Another great thing it was just clips of performances, photos and one on one interviews with the band, producers, techincians and record company executives, no dramatics or no other bands or fans talking about them which would muddle the documentary. It's stripped down to the important stuff.
A must see for any fan.
I felt pleasantly surprised after watching this. I gained a new respect for the band, and seeing how they created this unique album added a new dimension to the film. I enjoyed the many special features possibly more than the documentary itself.
The band members are in great form and are as candid as you'll ever see them. Glen Matlock and Steve Jones provide many insights, and watching them perform their riffs today is a great pleasure, but it's Johnny Rotten who steals the show with his dark clarity. Amazing words!
It's a fairly low-budget effort, but it's the best Sex Pistols DVD that you can find, and an excellent documentary about the making of legendary music. For several reasons:
1) It's shorter, appropriate to a career as short as the Pistols was.
2) It's less pretentious.
3) It's less burdened by the need to undo "The Great Rock n'Roll Swindle", which was more or less "Fury's" entire purpose. In this we actually get to hear McClaren bubble harmlessly about how he was a "mis-manager" from the beginning.
4) It drives home the point that John Lydon is completely full of offal, and himself. Case in point: in his autobio, Lydon claims that Glenn Matlock directly said to him that he wanted the band to be like the Bay City Rollers: "That's a direct quote from him to me." In this DVD, he says "Turns out, years later, the Bay City Rollers was NOT what Glenn had in mind. That's unfortunate. In a way, I suppose we were both duped." So the "direct quote" appears not to have been instead a complete untruth, yet somehow Johnny's still the victim. When is this fool going to outgrow his adolescence?
5) It nicely affirms my suspicions that the only Pistol you'd ever want to have a beer with is Steve Jones. I suspect that's why he's a DJ on Indie 103 today, and Lydon is...on Judge Judy?
6) It's actually about the MUSIC of the Sex Pistols, as opposed to their place in the sociopoliticoculturoeconomic history of Britain.
7) Very Little Sid. Which is good, because honestly, who cares? Studio: Red Distribution Release Date: 02/15/2005 Rerations < Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks >

(A real mixed bag from a great talent)
(Quiet Reflections)
(She keeps growing as she goes....) Timeless lyrics - Great music! The seller shipped this item in a bubble-wrap envelope. Although the CD arrived unscathed, the jewel case was cracked, apparently from the pressure of other packages in shipment. For years Mary Chapin Carpenter has been labeled a C&W artist and for a while country music embraced her, and it's a good thing they did for if not she would still probably be doing nightly gigs at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and no one except those fortunate few would get to hear her. Now that she's established she can do what what she wants and if this is it, I couldn't be more pleased. This is a beautiful album full of memorable melodies and emotionally passionate lyrics. She has always written with passion and truth and is in my opinion one of the finest songwriters ever. C&W she is not and fans of Shawn Colvin and Ali DiFranco should check this out. Let's get one thing straight. Mary Chapin Carpenter is my favorite singer/songwriter of all time, bar none. Her previous and subsequent albums have been consistently stellar and far more ambitious and intelligent than anything her contemporaries have tossed at us. And if "Time*Sex*Love*" were presented by any other artist, it would rank as a career highlight. So why am I only giving it three stars? Because this is the only one of her albums that I have trouble listening to from start to finish without skipping tracks. Why is this? Because there are just too many slow, sound-alike ballads in the middle of the piece (five, to be exact), sandwiched around the uptempo "This is Me Leaving You," which is probably one of the weakest songs Carpenter has ever written. The album just drags for me, and doesn't seem nearly as vital or alive as "Stones in the Road" or "Come On Come On," or even this year's "Between Here and Gone." Carpenter has always been generous with the number of songs presented, but with fourteen songs and a bonus track she would have been well-advised to cut one of the ballads to aid in the album's momentum. That said, there are many things to like about this album as well. The '60's throwback sounds of "Maybe World," which would sound right at home on a Mamas and the Papas album; the insightful and beautiful "Late for Your Life," which she has taken to closing concerts with; the eloquent plea to slow down and enjoy life which is "The Long Way Home"; and the first single "Simple Life," which bombed on country radio evidently because it dealt with issues other than chasing men or crying over busted romances. Ironically, the first half of the album is the best, when the reverse is usually true with this artist. I know I'll be in trouble with other fans for not loving this album, but sorry. I love Carpenter's music, whether its the fun, uptempo stuff or the slow, beautifully observed ballads. This one, however, just doesn't have the same effect on me as her other albums. But make no mistake, second-rate Carpenter is still better than anything Faith, Martina, Shania, Reba and JoDee put out on their best days. This is one of Mary Chapin Carpenter's best albums she's recorded yet. I look forward to her new one BETWEEN HERE AND GONE with lots of excitement. *TIME *SEX *LOVE is a great CD of reflective songs that you will more than likely enjoy. Her first new album since the lackluster 1996 album A PLACE IN THE WORLD, this is a step in the right direction. There's some really nice ballads with her warm vocals all over them. "Alone But Not Lonely" is a favorite of mine, some really nice lyrics and a nice melody. The closing "Late For Your Life" is also nice, and it has a bonus hidden track. "What Was It Like" is another great ballad, heartbreaking. There's some nice uptempo songs like "Slave to the Beauty", "Whenever You're Ready", "In The Name Of Love", "This Is Me Leaving You", etc. Other good songs include "King of Love", "Swept Away", "The Dreaming Road" and "Someone Else's Prayer". Overall a strong album from Mary Chapin Carpenter that should have a place in every CD collection! and so should all of us. As much as I love every other album she has sung, I love this one as another step forward in life. More experiences, more lessons learned, more choices---reflections based on new directions taken as we grow older.Unlike some of the other slightly disappointed reviewers, I WANT MCC to keep evolving by turning over new stones in a new road. She is being honest and true to herself, and I love the woman and hearing the voice of that woman as her life changes. It's obvious that she continues to grow, and I want to hear what new things she's discovered. My loyalty is to the woman and the messages she shares. I have no expectations except a rewarding experience and a sense of continued identity as MCC continues to sing. Today, I am feeling especially connected and spiritual, because last night I heard Mary Chapin, Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin singing live and intimately sharing conversation with each other and their Pittsburgh audience. Strength and beauty, self-discovery and sharing, hard-won choices and coping with reality, stories of everyday life and consequences of loving---all underlined by driving guitars and ghosts I could identify with. These songs are art for enjoyment and enrichment. These are artists reaching out to their audience and trusting us to benefit from their gifts. That's how I receive their songs. How could I object to them? On albums likeState of the Heart,Shooting Straight in the Dark, andCome on Come On, Mary Chapin Carpenter melded folkie singer-songwriter concerns with melodies and hooks that country (and, occasionally, adult-pop) radio programmers could get behind foursquare. Since those late-'80s/early-'90s high points, the Brown University graduate has often pushed niceties such as catchiness to the artistic back burner. Despite some too-languid stretches,Time* Sex* Love*, her first studio disc since 1996, finds Carpenter recapturing some of the balance that marked the best of those earlier records. "In the Name of Love" lifts off with a trademark midtempo groove and a complex lyric about attraction and independence. Other tracks subtly spice Carpenter's formula with lovely, sighing vocal harmonies and fleeting evocations of Beatles-era AM radio. Her need to attempt major statements about the sad realities of grownup life may ultimately beTime's biggest flaw; where's Carpenter hiding her gifts for limning small moments (State's "This Shirt") or events that few other songwriters would think to commit to tape (Shooting's comet-appearance commemoration "Halley Came to Jackson")? There's reality, and there's reality.--Rickey Wright Rerations < time* sex* love* >

(Circle Jerks rock!)
(Fast Hardcore Album)
(Legendary Album)
(speed, transition, flow...like Steve Caballero at the Del Mar Skate Ranch Circa 1983) This is one of those albums that is over befor you know it, and leaves you wanting more. This is by far the Circle Jerks best album. This CD is great! It is my first from them and I highly recommend it! This is my favorite Circle Jerks album. Its FAST, about 16 minutes total. Thats awesome, and at the same time bad. Depends on your mood the day you listen to it. Either way though, musically its a great album. This has to be one of the top 5 hardcore albums ever released. It's an absolutely face melting 14 minute unrelentless sonic attack. It could not possibly start harder than the initial blast of "Deny Everything" - what could be better advice.
Hearing this recently, "Paid Vacation" is unbelieveable prophetic on the current situation in the middle east - "Next Stop Afghanistan It's just a giant Oil Company scam" applies now more than it did 27 years ago when it spoke about the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.
If you have to have 1 Circle Jerks album (I recommend every single one of them) this is the one to get. Shoot for the split w/ Wild in the Streets as that one is pretty much critical to any punk collection.
This album however captures the chaos of their shows - I have seen them twice but the show I saw in late 1980s on the Wonderful Tour w/ Corrosion of Comformity, Slapshot, and Vice Grip at the now defunct Rat in Boston still reigns as one of the greatest concerts I have ever seen. The posers calling themselves punk bands now cannot inspire the phrentic mosh attack that was unleashed on the front row - despite nearly being killed there (seriously overcrowded and nearly crushed to death in the front row) I will always remember this show and hearing any song on this album brings the rush right back.
Bands today are a dime a dozen - I wouldn't be surprised if people 50 years from now still listen to this album.
Goddam it support these guys - they put their whole lives into their music and deserve to be remembered. The lead singer, Keith Morris, started this band as well as Black Flag (Nervous Breakdown), but this first and best release of the Circle Jerks is a far superior album than any of the Black Flag albums. However..."Wild in the Streets" (from album of same name) is my favorite "Jerk" song.
Dr. Brown certifies this CD as "Bitchin"!
Don't be lame buy the cd....14 songs in about the same amount of minutes..."That's how long the inspiration lasts". Near seamless transition between songs leaves you with a satisfying dose of music. Play it loud mothers love this band! An undisputed classic. Fourteen songs in as many minutes with each one more brilliant than the last. Originally released in 1980. Rerations < Group Sex >

(Chris Rock's first movie, which we can try to take seriously)
(I can't believe it)
(What's in a title?)
(funny, realistic and insightful !!) It was a decent movie with quite a few laughs. Of course something like this would never happen in real life (a sexy woman comes on to a black man and he refuses [?!?!]), but it was interesting to see the treatment of how something like this *might* have gone down if it actually happened in real life. In this relatively unnoticed comedy about family (not necessarily for family in this case) life and the problems that many may face when the lust and thrill in a relationship goes stale, The sometimes halarious Chris Rock goes to work in his first feature film. Chris Rock stars as a succesful businessman in Manhatten, with a wonderful wife and two cute children. What went wrong? The love in the marriage was fading and life for him is clearly not the fun crazy life that it was in his early days. Then an old yet still young lady friend bumps into him and the cherished days seem tangible, and what do you know, she's still in the game. Entranced by her sexiness and livliness. What is Chris to do? Well, I'll tell you that this is a refreshing imprint on the smoky times that comedy is going through, and is worth a look, maybe even a peak. Despite being a horrible script and witnessing the worst acting I've seen in years, this movie still pulled off to be quite charming. I don't know why, I was quite prepared to hate this movie. Still, I caught myself smiling. Check it out for yourself. I wonder why this movie wasn't more successful. I think that if the title was narrowed down to something a bit shorter that wouldn't take the complete DVD cover when translated into German might've been a better idea. A title centered on Kerry Washington, who plays Nikki -- the goddess/seductress and menace/heroine in Richard's (Chris Rock) boring life. How about Lingerie Wars or Tempted by Lust? Better yet: Maneater. That'll get people to see the movie, not Chris Rock. And that's just too bad, because C. Rock did a great job with this movie. I don't know if people are wary of his stand-up language, but the language is definitely not at the same level in this movie. While I didn't laugh hysterically throughout, I thought Chris nailed the role of a bored and frustrated husband with children, where he didn't appreciate what he really had -- a beautiful family. The temptations of a successful businessman (key word man) with the ultimate chick magnet (a wedding ring). I also thought this film nailed the direction a man's mind goes when he sees a beautiful woman. But it's not just the sexual tension, it's the boredom: Nikki is fun! Is he going to go for it? Is the grass greener on the other side, or is it even being watered? If you're married, divorced, or plan to be married...watch this movie. It's great. I loved the movie! Chris Rock did a great job directing it. It was funny especially the viagra scene, everytime I watch it i laugh till I can't laugh no more!! It's so easy to relate to his character; although I'm female. Kerry Washington as nikki did a fantastic job!! charming sexy mischevious...just fun!! And of course Mr.Rock was funny as always but he didn't overdo it which sometimes comedians tend to do in their movies. It was perfect and i will recommend it to all my friends. Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 06/10/2008 Run time: 94 minutes Rating: R
Chris Rock's loose remake of 1972'sChloe In the Afternoon, the latter an entry in French New Wave genius Eric Rohmer'sSix Moral Talescycle, is a half-silly, half-starchy adult comedy about a buttoned-up money manager, Richard Cooper (Rock), whose staid life at home has worn down his sexual vitality. With two kids and a somewhat joyless wife (Gina Torres), Richard's mind wanders on the job, on the train, virtually anywhere a restless husband can spot beautiful, unattainable women. Still, no harm done, until old friend Nikki (Kerry Washington) shows up in his office, wanting his support and counsel and friendship every minute over subsequent weeks. The two stay out of the sack, which makes it possible for them to be honest with one another. Nikki criticizes Richard for being in what appears to be a loveless relationship, bled dry of passion. Richard calls out Nikki for being flighty, unwilling to commit to anything. As the relationship wears on, Richard's world is upended, and the havoc takes a toll on his family life and productivity. It's at this point where the film, co-adapted for the screen and directed by Rock, paints itself into a corner, with few interesting alternatives for a way out of Richard's dilemma that feel authentic or, for that matter, funny. A Viagra-inspired visual joke (gee, hard to imagine what that could be) is a crass gift to audience members growing suspicious that Rock has lured them into a chick flick. A soul duet between Rock and Torres appears out of nowhere and throws the emotional balance off at a crucial moment. This kind of thing makes one wonder how seriously Rock took his own project, yet there are signs that he--a very funny and intelligent talent--has a different kind of movie in him. Jokes about Michael Jackson, race, and even racially-slanted comedy are peppered throughoutI Think I Love My Wife, harmless distractions in context, yet suggestive of a different kind of movie satire waiting to come out of Rock. --Tom Keogh
