customer 's review (Excellent !)
(The finest production yet)
(Gritty realism juxtaposed with the artifice of opera)
(one of the most beautiful versions of Carmen I have seen......)
(Amazing, not to be missed) Excellent performance by all the actors and opera singers. It was a very good idea to transport the classic opera into a movies version. This adaptation is not new, nevertheless, is a masterpiece for all times. Congratulations ! This is an absolutely must have for any lovers of the opera Carmen. I originally purchased it as a VHS recording and have tried for years to locate it on DVD. The DVD version is rare indeed and the high cost (I paid $134.77) is worth every penny. The sound is highly superior to the VHS version though mine may have been played so long it sound has been affected. It was purchased from a video store. This presentation of the opera is shown as a movie. It contains close-ups not possible in a stage presentation and it shows villages, buildings, huge crowds, dust, actual bull fighting and many scenes totally impossible with a stage production. Also, the opera is intact. Nothing has been changed. Domingo and Migenes are excellent as are all the cast. A finer version of the opera is simply not possible. This film version of the great Bizet opera aims for gritty realism right from the start - during the opening credits a bull is impaled and killed during a bull-fight - of course this realism goes out the window as soon as the characters open their mouths and begin to sing!
This is a well-mounted and well-sung production but the juxtaposition of a realistic setting with the artifice that is opera just doesn't work. The cast are not helped by the obvious lip-synching especially noticable during close-ups. The limitations of the singers as actors are also ruthlessly exposed.
Lovers of the vibrancy and passion of Bizet's great opera are best advised to look elsewhere.
This 1983 version of Bizet's Carmen, directed by the great Italian filmmaker, Franco Zeferelli, is wonderfully done. We really don't see enough of the great soprano, Julia Migenes, who is seen here as the title character, opposite the marvelous Placido Domingo, as Don Jose, her jealous lover. This film glows with exhuberance and fire and the cast does a fantastic job. I definitely reccomend this film to those who consider themselves opera fans, as well as those who have never seen an opera before. For starters, the cinematography is so earthy and beautiful to look at. Secondly, the acting is best-described as smouldering. Julia Migenes and Placido Domingo have great on-screen chemistry. Finally, this opera has some of the most well-loved and recognized operatic songs ever heard. Not to be missed..... An amazing visual feast - a palette of tawny burnt golds and sunsplashed white, relieved by the earth tones of the villagers' dresses and the grey-green of the uniforms...no pinks or purples here! Just a dash of red in the blooded bulls...and the only blue is the muted blue of Michaela's dress (the virginal one?) And those incredible towns and villages, and the vast striated rockfaces in the countryside. This is the land where the relentess sun beats into brains and perhaps turns everyone a little mad.
Wonderful little touches: dramatic duets sometimes sung by the couple in the distance while in the foreground the villagers work quietly at their tasks and the dogs wander about: the infants brought to the tobacco factory by their mothers, kept safe in cane walking frames or lying in cots...
But how can I write two paragraphs and not mention MUSIC??? Because I believe that this filmic rendering is actually truer to the heart of opera than many a stage production. Nowadays with our full-realism movie experiences we enjoy opera mainly for the music and silently forgive the limitations of stage sets and scenery. But opera is not only a series of arias. The wrenching emotional dramas were as important to those audiences as the musical medium. Surely if Bizet could have used movie cameras, he would have created something like this experience.
Anyway, musically, Domingo is splendid: Raimondi is excellent as Escamillo: on his first appearance you sense true musical authority. Carmen...she gives great hipswings, but the voice doesn't quite have the power this gypsy wildcat needs. Lorin Maazel's interpretation I like except for his too-fast tempo in the entrance of the toreadors: a scramble instead of a pageant.
Overall, not a Carmen to miss! I had no idea what to expect and was riveted from the introductory bullfight. This is the most popular opera production so far on DVD, surpassing even Franco Zeffirelli's lavish, symbol-ladenLa Traviata. It is an excitingCarmen, with a young-looking Placido Domingo in top form for a role he has sung hundreds of times. For Julia Migenes, it was her first performance in a role she would have trouble performing in an opera house. Her voice does not fit easily into Carmen's range, and she spent months training it, very successfully, before singing the role in a recording studio where the soundtrack was taped before the film was shot. Casting her in the role was a gamble, but it worked; she is a convincing actress--even better than Maria Ewing in the competing DVD edition from Covent Garden, though Ewing acts very well and has a more appropriate voice. This movie version was filmed on location, conveying a kind of atmosphere, a sense of space, movement, and presence hard to achieve in a staged performance shot for television. It takes the action out of doors for many scenes. The opening titles are superimposed on the bloody conclusion of a bullfight. The changing of the guard in the opening scene, with the boys' chorus playing soldier, the crowd scenes, the dance number that opens Act II, the panoramic scenery of the smugglers' mountain hideout, all benefit from the freedom granted by movie cameras. But the music is, on the whole, more effectively performed in the Covent Garden production, which also handles close-up shots better, perhaps because it was directed with a small screen in mind. The opera house atmosphere will make hard-core opera fans feel more at home. The movie version uses the opera's original opera comique form with some spoken dialogue rather than recitatives.--Joe McLellan All the passion and spectacle of Bizet'sCarmencomes to life in this dazzling screen opera starring Placido Domingo and Julia Migenes-Johnson. In 19th century Seville, the lusty, tempestuous Carmen (Migenes-Johnson) seduces a naive Army corporal, Don Jose (Domingo), newly assigned to the village fortress. Jose abandons his career, his fiancée and even his dying mother for the love of this sultry gypsy. But soon she spurns him in favor of a toreador, Escamillo (Ruggero Raimondi). Crazed with jealousy, Jose begs Carmen to return to him, but her taunting declaration of independence results in tragedy. Shot entirely on location in Andalusian Spain,Bizet's Carmenhas been hailed as the definitive version of this classic opera. 155 minutes. Rerations < Bizet - Carmen / Maazel, Migenes, Domingo >

(Don't waste your time!)
(He's Right) There is nothing this dvd has, that you're going to want. At $1, it would be overpriced.
There is no instructional content of any value. Commentary is generic and vague.
Basically, the video is a bunch of older, overweight, homely couples, grunting and wallowing to cliched tantric music, with some snippets thrown in by the two commentators. You'll learn nothing, and be entertained even less.
This dvd gets a solid F. The sinclair institute may have a reputation for quality products but the better sex series is a big let down. What the other reviews fail to tell you is that these videos were originally produced in 1990. IT was an exeriment to use "actual couples for loving sex". It was a neat idea at the time but this is what you get. Ugly models having sex. My wife and I had to turn this off the first time. The models are just ugly and old. It seams as if the majority of models are over 4 and not good looking at all. Kinda like a swing fest for loosers.
If you are going to look for help on sex, look at Anne Hoopers guides or the old Kama Sutra series. They were much better than this. watching this made me please my significant other with a passion. she begs for more all the time. for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and yes desert. our love life enhanced to another level that i can't even imagine. i recommend this to anyone who is willing to explore themselves. it'll make your partner say mmmmmm... 1) A couple of the actors are not pleasing to look at, period! 2) The theme of the video is mostly concerned about okaying you that oral sex is okay. 3) I'd say this video is geared toward a very young couple who have never tried oral sex before. 4) The second time I watched it with a new girl friend, I almost fell asleep! LOL He's right the people on the video are just horrid to look out instantly ruining the mood you were trying to capture by watching this with your spouse. There is a scene early on where a rather fat hairy pale guy whose image still haunts my mind is getting oral sex, and i have yet to make it past that scene and probably never will. All the sinclair videos i've seen have extremely gorgeous people on the ads and sometimes covers of the Dvd but no where in any of the tapes does anyone look remotely of the same caliber as the ads. It's hard to watch this, you most likely aren't going to learn a single new thing this is just going to be a waste of your money and then time. Oral sex is the most sensual of all love play, capable of producing sensations that far surpass the pleasures of intercourse alone. This erotic act of lovemaking is raised to an art form in Better Oral Sex Techniques. Dr. Marty Klein and Dr. Diana Wiley introduce basic techniques that can help couples master cunnilingus and fellatio. Viewers will learn how to communicate their likes and dislikes, discover their partner's most sensitive areas of arousal, and will watch explicit demonstrations of tips on the best positions, pressure and timing. This video helps couples overcome their fears and concerns about oral sex and creates a comfortable, safe environment for couples of all levels of experience. For those who have never tried oral sex, all your questions will be answered and anxieties put to rest. Discover new ways to enjoy what's been called the ultimate expression of love. (Let's Talk About Something Else)
(Let's Talk About Sex !)
(Definite Chick Flick to Watch with Girlfriends!) I just saw this film on the Independent Film Channel in December 2002. I normally pass by films with explicit adult content but this one had me riveted from the start.I read the 1st 2 reviews here on Amazon. Ignore those! One is from a Christian (well, duh, I wonder why she didn't like it) and the other from a man (no wonder he wouldn't like it, it's a brazenly honest film about women's feelings about relationships in general). I went through a full series of emotions watching the film. I laughed, cried, was shocked, and got angry. But overall, the film really made me think and made me feel I wasn't alone! It's a definite must see for a girl's night out (or night in). It can be a real ice breaker for conversation. I highly recommend the film! I was a little disappointed with this movie. The plot lacked sustenance and did little to really keep me entertained.Worth seeing one time perhaps, I wouldn't really waste my time watching it over and over. If you are looking for a humorous movie, this probably won't provide you with many laughs. There are a couple of laughable moments, but they are short lasted. If you decide to skip seeing this movie, I would say it is a safe bet that you won't be missing too much. Three women complain with random people on the street about things they like and don't like. When the master tape is lost, the women have a 5 minute long sequence where classical music plays and they are, simultainously, crying and cleaning. This movie is the only one I've rented from a video store, where I told an employee about how much I hated it and he gave me a free rental !I hated, hated, HATED this movie ! There is one funny scene with a condom saleswoman, but that is about it. Not even a cameo from the lovley Rachel Rocketts could save this cinematic waste. The only way this movie could be worse is if it starred Kevin Costner and was secretly the sequel to North ! If you want to see a good movie, see"Combat Shock","The Toxic Avenger","American Psycho","Unspeakable"... wait, let me tell you the only movies worse than this:"Ghoulies"and"A Visitor From the Grave". Pretty much every movie except for those two are better than this ! In conclusion, if you are at a video store, and they are out of EVERY movie except for"Let's Talk About Sex","Ghoulies", and"A Visitor From the Grave", see it. Otherwise, avoid like the plague! I found this movie very entertaining as it does reflect what many women do talk about and want from men, serious or not in a relationship. Many of the characters are very funny during the interview scenes of the movie and had me truly laughing. The storyline details female friendship and pulling together through life's ups and downs which I really admired. It has an awsome soundtrack that unfortunately is not available!! After seeing it on Cable TV twice, I knew I had to own it and have my girlfriends over to watch and laugh about!

(Porn with mainstream production values)
(a different approach to sex)
(The magic "bus")
(Throwing light on topics not often discussed, at least in American movies) Being a fan of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I had some idea of what to expect from the genius mind of John Cameron Mitchell, but this film blew me away - so thought provoking, touching and at times laugh-out-loud funny. The cast is great, and it was good to see Miriam Shor (Hedwig and teh Angry Inch) making a cameo. All the perfomances were wonderful, but the thing that made this movie for me was the absolutely beautiful soundtrack which opened up a whole new world of music for me - as well as bringing in a few golden oldies like Anita O'Day in to round it out. Don't be put off by the sex - it's not gratuitous in its nature and really invites the viewer to examine and challenge their own views and ideas - and it is handled so truthfully that even the most uptight prude could not help but see something of themself in each of the characters and laugh. You'll definitely want to buy the soundtrack! I'd never heard of this movie until a straight buddy of mine asked me to review his DVD and share my thoughts on whether if it's "borderline gay". Uh, yeah. OK, so the credits were the first indication that this was not going to be your garden variety flick. The Q TV moniker for those of us "in-the-know" told me right off the bat that the demographic was aimed at a gay audience. And then wham! An opening scene that made me drop my Yoplait all over the carpet...the dude's auto-fellatio complete with orgasm. My first reaction was WTF?! So I brushed it off, watched the flick, more sex...singing the national anthem during a three-way...blah, blah. These characters are all messed up in the head. I think the reasons why I didn't have nearly as much angst as it concluded was merely due to the diversion of its gratuitous sex. Great production values, but these people have some serious issues. Stupid ending with that lovefest parade and warm and fuzzy song by some washed up tranny! When the young gentleman at the video store told me it had the most graphic sex he'd seen second only to XXX, I almost didn't rent Shortbus. XXX gets really boring. From experience, I can tell you it is more interesting to sleep with the people who make XXX than to watch their work. As I kept running across references to Shortbus in my reading, I took a chance. It is rare in how direct it is about what it has to say, and so brutally honest in what it is portrayed. Movies of this genre are often just so over the top to be tedious. The average viewer-if there is such a thing-will indeed see that finding different approaches to sex is that important in some people's lives. It makes it painfully clear that the prices to be paid for such knowledge aren't for the faint of heart. This term is so cliched, but to this film, it really applies: I've never seen anything quite like this movie. "Shortbus" is a unique film that is about sex, yet more about everything else in our lives which connects to it. Writer-director John Cameron Mitchell did a beautiful job of guiding this tapestry of sexual pathos. Like porn, you see people engaging in sex; yet, it is more "humanly" tangible because we feel the genuine emotions coming from each sex act, not just "acting" or rather, mechanical sex. How this film was assmbled is almost as interesting as the film itself: Actors helped craft the script as well as their own characters with Mitchell. "Shortbus" is a sex club in New York; sort of a bohemian-like atmosphere in which, as one character describes, "people come here to use 'the motherboard of life' in order to find the right connections". Here, people from all walks of life gather to find something---whether through sex or deep conversation. As the film progresses, we watch these characters intersect with one another, and help, solve, or simply listen to each other's life dysfunctions. Whether the characters are straight, gay, bi-sexual or transgendered, the labels do not matter---they are just people trying to relate to one another through the wonders of sex and love. If you feel you'll be overwhelmed by the frank content, then don't watch. But I think you'll be compelled to by the sadness, honesty&compassion of the interweaving plots. If Robert Altman had ever taken on the subject of sex in America in one of his big, sprawling, multi-character epics, the result would probably have looked a lot like John Cameron Mitchell's outrageous yet moving "Shortbus". You get all the things Altman gave us in films like "Nashville" and "Short Cuts": lots of characters, lots of situations, a lot of sadness, but a lot of hope, too. Of course, here you also get lots of sex, in a very graphic manner and in all its various permutations. If you can take that, and if you don't mind a film that doesn't offer easy answers to its many characters' many predicaments, I think you'll enjoy this movie, or at least find it fascinating.
By the way, if some of the sex scenes overwhelm you, be sure to watch the special features. You'll be reassured to see that the challenge of those scenes overwhelmed, at least temporarily, many of the actors called on to perform them. For some reason, it was good to see that hip young people up for being in an edgy, sexy movie could nevertheless feel a little shy when it came to actually doing certain things in front of the camera. Maybe because seeing such trepidation on the part of the actors made the sexual problems of their characters, many of which involved shyness and discomfort, feel all the more believeable. Follows the lives of several individuals and couples as the struggle with various sexual issues. Genre:Feature Film-Drama Rating:UN Release Date:13-MAR-2007 Media Type:DVD In his aim to make an honest film about sex, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) has taken a somewhat documentary approach toShortbus, a film describing various New Yorkers' sexual pathos. Framed by shots roving a homemade diorama of the city,Shortbusis comprised of vignettes featuring actors who helped craft this story of people's disconnect in sexual endeavors. Jamie (PJ DeBoy) and James (Paul Dawson), a gay couple experiencing a lull in their relationship, visit Sophia (Sook-Yin Lee), a sex therapist whose inability to orgasm results in her clients inviting her to a sex club after which the film is titled. Sophia's husband, Rob (Raphael Barker), is also willing to experiment, so the two independently embark on adventures in self-pleasure. Dominatrix Severin (Lindsay Beamish) plays a crucial role in Sophia and Rob's lives, as her search for real humanity overlaps with their desire for passion. As each character's plot complicates, the viewer sees a similar melancholy bulldozing its way into these seemingly disparate lives. The depression is repeatedly used in comedic scenes, such as when James is asked on a date while still hospitalized for his attempted suicide. Yo La Tengo's score, which includes Animal Collective among others, lends this film a graceful ambience. Unlike porn,Shortbushas a resonance that encourages the viewer to consider one's own sex life as an important aspect of happiness.--Trinie Dalton Rerations < Shortbus (Unrated Edition) >

(SAME TIME NEXT YEAR) This is one movie you need to see at least once in your life! Beautiful story, unforgettable lines and haunting music. Best movie ever! I watch this as a teenager and now as an older adult I still enjoy it. This movie has such a fun, sad story. this is simply the best movie of all time. I had to order another copy since I had worn out my original from watching it to often. We went to Mendocino for our honeymoon and everyone told us to watch this movie. While a movie about cheating on your spouse doesn't seem like a great idea and there really wasn't that much of the town shown in the movie it was still a really good movie. An excellent motion picture that shows not only that it's possible to love more than one person at a time, but also how people grow and change their values and perspectives over time. Buy it.
