(Dont take this CD for GRANTED) (Mike Ness needs to give it up!!!) I can't say enough about this album. I am a huge Social Distortion fan. To me every band is held up against them and no one can compare. This album is the best. Every song is fantastic. You can't go wrong. I really don't get the other reviews that are not in favor of this album. I listen to mostly punk and alt country. There is such a thing as punk rock snobs and I think a bunch wrote reviews. Not very punk rock in my opinion to buy your stuff off the internet. Do you have wi fi in your squatter house? Just get off your punk rock throne and appreciate good music. Social Distortion brings to the table a feel of rock, rebellion and good times, but have a way of bringing it about in a deep and meaningful way in this record. Clearly the ability and depth of the band is revealed in "Sex, Love and Rock `n' Roll"; this is not just a record to "make a buck" and this is evidenced through their remaining faithful to their roots (the hard edged quality to the lyrics and songs), yet their ability to evolve in the songs. "Reach for the Sky" seems to be the catchiest of the tunes. It has "radio play" written all over it, but the song is addictive, kind of one of those songs that just comes at you with its guitar riffs at the beginning and its memorable lyrics: "Reach for the sky `cause tomorrow may never come." The song is all about carpe diem: living for today and taking advantage of things while you still have a chance. Who cares if it is a little mainstream? This is a signature Social D song with a moral: the kind of song you want to turn up. Other notable songs on the disc are "Nickel and Dimes", another upbeat song with the signature sound of Social Distortion and "I Wasn't Born to Follow", the lyrics seem to embody the Social D persona: "When I grow up, gonna be a star. Gonna sing my songs and play my guitar, I'm ready." One of the my favorites is the last track, "Angel's Wings", which is a bit in between hard and soft rock, but seems to evoke feelings of not being stuck in one mode in life, but living life trusting in fate: "Angel's wing won't you carry me home." Another great song is "Winners and Losers", a song that seems to be about the good and bad in life and people, and how everything has its place but keeps pushing on. Over all, this is just a great rock CD, one that you won't get sick of like so much other stuff out there. This is one of those CDs that gets better with age and begins to grow on you. It becomes somewhat of a habit after awhile. So, when you take a road trip, or are just hanging out with friends, be sure to pop in this one and crank it up! "Sex Love&Rock n Roll" is the first studio album from Social Distortion in 8 years. Mike Ness had alot of material to work with when putting together this album. During the bands hiatus, Social Distortion lost guitar player Dennis Danell to a brain anuerism in 2000. Danell had been with the band from the beginning and, along with Ness, was the foundation that the band was built on. Clearly, this album is a tribute to Dennis. Mike Ness has often said that he felt as though a piece of his youth died with Dennis. The resounding themes of this album is being a man, coping with loss, and dealing with love. These are subjects that are very easy to relate to. For the most part, this album is classic social distortion. Anyone who saw them during their scattered shows during hiatus is probably very familiar with most of the songs on this album anyway as many of them had already become mainstays of their live set over the 5 years preceding this albums release. There are a few tracks, however, that are there basically just to fill up the album. Still, most of the songs are incredible. The highlights are... -Reach For The Sky -Highway 101 -Don't Take Me For Granted -Footprints On My Ceiling -Angel's Wings I was Somewhere Between Heaven&Hell(Kuwait)when I bought the latest Social D cd. I must have played this CD over 100x during my deployment. After 100 times, I still listen to Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll at least once a week. Mike Ness proves that Social D only gets better with time. I really liked Social D. at one time in my life until I recently seen them live a few weeks ago. I thought Mike Ness was nothing more than boring and down right ignorant. The rest of the band was good, but when the bands frontman can't do much, but say "this next song is about or is.". Give me a break. Mike Ness kept bashing people in Hollywood and politics. He seemed really immature and pointless. I think he really tried to be a tough guy that night. I seen Agnostic Front about a year ago and the frontman Roger Miret is straight up a tough guy just looking at him, but he didn't have to make a seen of himself. Actually he was really kewl with the crowd and appreiciated everyone unlike Mike Ness's fake a.. . Plain and simple Mike Ness is a fake, but maybe back in the day he wasn't until he became stuck on himself. Oh yeah, Roger Miret has more and even cooler tatts. (Best Martinez CD ever!) Holy Crapola! It's finally here! He shoulda called this 'The Chinese Democracy' it took so long to make! For some reason, I thought this was gunna suck. I loved Buck Up Princess (go buy it), I still play that CD all the time, all the way through, which is saying something for a Hip Hop CD which are usually over long. Since then though his stuff with The Chicharones has been a little patchier, but still good, but WHOA! This record is beautiful! Just the right length and with some awesome beats and variation running through that keeps it fresh. The man keeps saying this is his last record, maybe if we buy enough copies it will persuade him to make another this good. This is independently released by The Josh so support him and pick up a copy. Buy this now! This is an AMAZING CD. As far as Josh Martinez goes, this cd is his best and thats saying a lot! Listen to it all the way through because every track is awesom (save one or two). The beats are fresh, and Martinez is a great rapper, singing a little more then your typical rap. It is really musical and by that I mean that it fits together better then most hip-hop as far as the tones in the beats and the vocals. I have a huge collection of hip hop and love it all but Josh is up there if not the best I have heard in a while. Josh is a hard working artist on his own record label with really great work so support him! The Josh Martinez experience mixes Doo-Wop, Psych, Dance moves, and Hi-Kicks with all of the joy and freshness of golden-era Hip Hop. The end result is the Ritalin Future Sound of which the kids these days cannot get enough. At shows, the ladies get down... hard. The fellas loosen up and try to act like they got a pair. Moms arrange their daughters' marriages in their minds, while fathers drink the night away at the bar, withering away with whimsy, their days of glory long gone. With his strongest, most accessible record yet, Martinez takes his place in the top tier of today's influential hip hop artists. His use of harmony and humor has long brought him accolades from non-traditional sources, but there has always been substance underneath the syrup. While I don't think these DVDs will teach you how to "hang from the rafters," the tone is encouraging and watching them is a good way to open communication and add some spice to your love life. If you're looking for something that's informative stay clear of the classic better sex videos. The videos were made in the early 90's although they look like they were made more around the 80's. The information given was very minimal. You could probably put all the informative content of the whole series into about 15 minutes. I was very disappointed and thought it was a waste of time and money. But if you're interested in old 80's /90's type of semi-soft core porn under the thin guise of being informative then this is for you. I would be suprised if these so called "doctors" were real, because they seem to have as much knowledge of the subject matter as your neighbors teenage kid. Try to find something that is bit more current and more informative -- you could probably even learn more from a real porn movie than this series but I'm sure there are a lot of other, better instructional videos out there. The sinclair institute may have a reputation for quality products but the better sex series is a big let down. What the other reviews fail to tell you is that these videos were originally produced in 1990. IT was an exeriment to use "actual couples for loving sex". It was a neat idea at the time but this is what you get. Ugly models having sex. My wife and I had to turn this off the first time. The models are just ugly and old. It seams as if the majority of models are over 4 and not good looking at all. Kinda like a swing fest for loosers. If you are going to look for help on sex, look at Anne Hoopers guides or the old Kama Sutra series. They were much better than this. This is a great beginner video for those new to sex videos. You don't have to be an amateur to appreciate the tips and invitation to explore beyond your comfort zone. My husband and I watched it together and found it stimulating (in more ways than one). It was nice that couples like us were used as examples so it seemed more realistic and unintimidating. We have a new comfort level with talking about our preferences - I highly recommend this as a tool to improve your sex life! I really appreciated the honest, straightforward approach of this series. It taught me that communication is the cornerstone to any good (or great!) relationship, then great sex follows. Some of the techniques are basic, but overall it is a very educational series that is very beneficial especially when both people in a relationship watch it together with an open mind. The cast is great, and it was good to see Miriam Shor (Hedwig and teh Angry Inch) making a cameo. All the perfomances were wonderful, but the thing that made this movie for me was the absolutely beautiful soundtrack which opened up a whole new world of music for me - as well as bringing in a few golden oldies like Anita O'Day in to round it out. Don't be put off by the sex - it's not gratuitous in its nature and really invites the viewer to examine and challenge their own views and ideas - and it is handled so truthfully that even the most uptight prude could not help but see something of themself in each of the characters and laugh. You'll definitely want to buy the soundtrack! I'd never heard of this movie until a straight buddy of mine asked me to review his DVD and share my thoughts on whether if it's "borderline gay". Uh, yeah. OK, so the credits were the first indication that this was not going to be your garden variety flick. The Q TV moniker for those of us "in-the-know" told me right off the bat that the demographic was aimed at a gay audience. And then wham! An opening scene that made me drop my Yoplait all over the carpet...the dude's auto-fellatio complete with orgasm. My first reaction was WTF?! So I brushed it off, watched the flick, more sex...singing the national anthem during a three-way...blah, blah. These characters are all messed up in the head. I think the reasons why I didn't have nearly as much angst as it concluded was merely due to the diversion of its gratuitous sex. Great production values, but these people have some serious issues. Stupid ending with that lovefest parade and warm and fuzzy song by some washed up tranny! When the young gentleman at the video store told me it had the most graphic sex he'd seen second only to XXX, I almost didn't rent Shortbus. XXX gets really boring. From experience, I can tell you it is more interesting to sleep with the people who make XXX than to watch their work. As I kept running across references to Shortbus in my reading, I took a chance. It is rare in how direct it is about what it has to say, and so brutally honest in what it is portrayed. Movies of this genre are often just so over the top to be tedious. The average viewer-if there is such a thing-will indeed see that finding different approaches to sex is that important in some people's lives. It makes it painfully clear that the prices to be paid for such knowledge aren't for the faint of heart. This term is so cliched, but to this film, it really applies: I've never seen anything quite like this movie. "Shortbus" is a unique film that is about sex, yet more about everything else in our lives which connects to it. Writer-director John Cameron Mitchell did a beautiful job of guiding this tapestry of sexual pathos. Like porn, you see people engaging in sex; yet, it is more "humanly" tangible because we feel the genuine emotions coming from each sex act, not just "acting" or rather, mechanical sex. How this film was assmbled is almost as interesting as the film itself: Actors helped craft the script as well as their own characters with Mitchell. "Shortbus" is a sex club in New York; sort of a bohemian-like atmosphere in which, as one character describes, "people come here to use 'the motherboard of life' in order to find the right connections". Here, people from all walks of life gather to find something---whether through sex or deep conversation. As the film progresses, we watch these characters intersect with one another, and help, solve, or simply listen to each other's life dysfunctions. Whether the characters are straight, gay, bi-sexual or transgendered, the labels do not matter---they are just people trying to relate to one another through the wonders of sex and love. If you feel you'll be overwhelmed by the frank content, then don't watch. But I think you'll be compelled to by the sadness, honesty&compassion of the interweaving plots. If Robert Altman had ever taken on the subject of sex in America in one of his big, sprawling, multi-character epics, the result would probably have looked a lot like John Cameron Mitchell's outrageous yet moving "Shortbus". You get all the things Altman gave us in films like "Nashville" and "Short Cuts": lots of characters, lots of situations, a lot of sadness, but a lot of hope, too. Of course, here you also get lots of sex, in a very graphic manner and in all its various permutations. If you can take that, and if you don't mind a film that doesn't offer easy answers to its many characters' many predicaments, I think you'll enjoy this movie, or at least find it fascinating. By the way, if some of the sex scenes overwhelm you, be sure to watch the special features. You'll be reassured to see that the challenge of those scenes overwhelmed, at least temporarily, many of the actors called on to perform them. For some reason, it was good to see that hip young people up for being in an edgy, sexy movie could nevertheless feel a little shy when it came to actually doing certain things in front of the camera. Maybe because seeing such trepidation on the part of the actors made the sexual problems of their characters, many of which involved shyness and discomfort, feel all the more believeable. This is a highly entertaining western where John Wayne and Ms Hepburn team up to capture the killers of Hepburn's father who have stolen a load of nitro glycerine to use in a bank robery. They are accompanied by a young Indian lad whose father was killed with Hepburn's father. This is a must-have for any John Wayne and/or Katharine Hepburn fan. The sequel to "True Grits" was enjoyable to watch. Though not as good as its predecessor. This movie could have given more history concerning the charactors other than the beloved Deputy Marshall. Katherine Hepburn was supurb of course, especially with that well developed voice of hers. This is a follow up to the Acadamy Award winning "True Grit" in which Wayne reprises his role as Rooster Cogburn. Location and photographics are great. Plot is pretty standard and does not offer any challenges to Wayne or Hepburn. Pretty much run of the mill for both these two... Watching 'True Grit' and This sequel back to back I was able to compare the films and their first releases. While I don't own the newest edition of 'true Grit' the version I own has a super picture and excellent sound. The sequel looks very good, but the print and transfer pale by comparison. The film is a bit grainy and should be revamped for a new release. The film however is very enjoyable with both stars in great form. Rooster Cogburn DVD John Wayne reprises his role in True Grit as a crusty, over-the hill, U. S. Marshall, this time he is teamed up with Katharine Hepburn who plays the feisty daughter of a minister to the savage Indians. The Minister has been killed by a group of rather incompetent outlaw's and Rooster has promised to "bring them to justice". This movie shows Wayne at his comedic best. Highly recommended for fans of John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn and fans of the comedy Western.
