(In the land of Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams) 『Back in 1985/86, Slash Records seemed to be on the brink of starting a whole new American Breed of Rockers. They had new albums and new bands from Los Lobos to The Blasters to The Bodeans. They all got sort of lumped into the 'new wave' category, but there was something more going on here. "Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams" was one of the best embodiments of this group of bands, and reissue, almost 25 years after the fact, shows why.
The Bodeans were young and enthusiastic kids who wanted to make their own sound. Being from Wisconsin, they has no burning desire to be trendy or fashionable, just to make music that felt like escape to them. With the first thrilling notes of "She's A Runaway" and the rocking theme of breakout the song offers, it's an instant classic that should have slotted in comfortably next to the Springsteen or Mellencamp hits of the day. T-Bone Burnette heard the truth inside the songs and the vocal magic Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas made, and hauled them away to Los Angeles to make this album. "Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams" is a missing link of an album, the chain the runs between The Everly Brothers and The Rolling Stones (from whom the album nicked its title).
The remaster sounds incredible. The BoDeans were still fresh and excited, with T-Bone at the top of his early production game. "Rickshaw Riding" has sudden space in its slowbreathing sound. "Looking for Me Somewhere" sounds like Johnny Cash passed on it to hand it over to these youngsters. And the bonus track "Turn Your Radio On" makes you wonder why this Chuck Berry-ish rocker got left behind.
The there's the DVD, a homecoming of sorts with a live Minneapolis concert from 1985. Again, there's this brash enthusiasm that only a hungry young band could muster, and it's great fun to watch. It's east to see why (if you believe Kurt's liner notes) the T-Bone urged the suits at Warners to sing The Bodeans because "they're gonna be bigger than The Beatles." It includes songs that never made it to the studio albums done in front of a hometown audience, excited that their local heroes just might be the next big thing. "Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams" captures that desire, and this re-issue - from the good folks at Rhino - makes you scratch your head as to why it didn't happen.』
(They're the best) 『I have been a long time fan of the boys and try to see them in concert as much as I can, but NY isn't on their tour list often (a giant shame!). They are the ultimate live band, and they themselves said they really only wanted to make music and play it for the fans. Not big studio guys. This album is so honest, raw, and touching, as well as tons of fun, that you can have a wide range of experiences as you listen to it. There is a lot of love, loss, and a lot of things in between. For people new to their music, go back here, go back to the beginning, and enjoy the youth, but with a startling maturity about them. Vocally, no one has it on Kurt and Sammy. Alone or together, they just nail it every time. They are unique and so genuine, it's impossible not to love them from the very start.』

Brute force and S&M are the compulsions behind seeing it.

(I'd like to say this movie was great, but.....) 『This is a decent movie if you have the knowledge of the band, but even at that I say decent not even necessarily good. The movie has low production value and tries way to hard to prove a point plus the storyline is kind of loose. I truly believed that the movie was made for two reasons, one to make fun of their manager who ripped them off. Aside from that a way to put there music videos out and to sell a cd that probably wouldn't exist otherwise. I would reccomend instead of this the "Filth and The Fury"(The Sex Pistols Documentary) or "Rock 'N Roll Highschool! Odds are if your a fan you will buy this anyway so enjoy it for what it is but don't hope too high.』
(A curiosity) 『This film comes from a subgenre very popular in the underground of the 60s-70s....the freaked out "documentary" of a band usually involving their extremely hands-y manager. A better known film very similar to this one in style and intent is "The Song Remains The Same" by Led Zeppelin, where like this film, the manager takes a prominent role in front of the cameras with their band. Neither are literal documentaries nor are they completely non fiction, but a curious mixture of both. In this case, I wouldn't feel wrong in calling it an "exploitation" flick, in every sense of the word.
Some of the reviewers seemed to think/expect this was a straightforward rockumentary, so some background might clear things up. Malcolm McLaren attempted to follow in the peculiarly UK tradition of The Great Rock Manager with The Sex Pistols. This is where the manager functioned as a "member of the band" rather than merely involved in business matters and became almost as famous as their charges. These sorts of managers were involved with everything from writing songs to living with their bands/members to mixing their recordings to buying their dope and girls/boys. These sorts of managers could be the boon or bane of a rock band and end up with their hands in their pockets pretty much forever. On the positive end, these super hands-on managers could keep their kids' best interests in mind with regards to money, publishing, contracts, etc...and keep them out of all sorts of trouble, Grant and Stigwood/Forrester did an excellent job here. The bad/irresponsible/incompetent/naive/and just super stoned manager could cause them grief that lasts decades (Epstein, Kit Lambert-Chris Stamp, Oldham, etc...). I think McLaren falls in the latter category, but rather intentionally unlike Epstein, Oldham, and Lambert-Stamp. Everything I've ever seen makes me believe McLaren would have put these kids in any situation, no matter how dangerous and just plain stupid, to get attention and make a buck or quid....FOR HIMSELF. In this film, it really shows.
This trend started with and was its most successful with "the Dinosaurs" as the Pistol's generation of punks called them but what we now call "Classic Rockers" and has mostly died out with McLaren being the last of the breed....for better or worse. (The most famous examples past The Beatles/Epstein are: Lambert and Stamp with The Who, Andrew Loog Oldham with The Rolling Stones, Peter Grant with Led Zeppelin, and Robert Stigwood/Roger Forrester with Eric Clapton from Cream in 1966 until the late 90s. There are others, but these are the most famous and/or successful partnerships) This manager-as-5th-Beatle/Pistol thing was a phenomena almost exclusively English, although Andy Warhol tried his hand at the role for 5 minutes with the Velvet Underground.
I watched this knowing this very iffy history of UK bands/managers and kept that in mind, but still found it unsettling. The level of crass exploitation these kids were subject to is painful to watch. It's the most extreme case I know about. This is McLaren and the whole band-manager thing taken to it's most illogical and cynical extreme. It's sad to realize that he's probably still making more money off the Pistol's than any of the living members or dead one's estates for the rest of his life.
If you like freaked out films and/or are a music history buff/Sex Pistols fanatic, buy this knowing some of the background and watch it for what it is.....a rather uncomfortable curiosity piece.
As for the quality of this film, unless some major restoration work is done, its quality isn't going to improve between VHS or DVD. If you still have a VCR and/or are a VHS enthusiast, buy a used copy as a nice little rock curiosity. I bought this on VHS and I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than the $1 or so that I paid, so needless to say I think it's worth the smallest amount possible on either format. In other words, I wouldn't suggest spending the extra $$$ for an imported disc for this title. 』
(A great swindle indeed!) 『Simply a bizarre mix of truth and loads of Malcolm BS- this documentary spoof of the Sex pistols is the reigning king of music films. Midgets- Malcolm- great live footage and Monty Python inspired lunacy help tell the tale of the rise and fall of rocks greatest thorn in the side. Sliced with entertaining cartoons of real life pistol happenings and some guerilla styled film making and scenes with a soon to be dead Sid vicious that are no doubt priceless- the fact is they dont make em like this anymore- and that special moment in time is mytholigized to near absurdity. Brilliant fun and a must for all fans of music and late 70s culture!!!!』

Temple's rococo approach evokes an 18th century riot (in which effigies of the Pistols are burned), noir-like passages featuring guitarist Steve Jones as a thief, and the unholy sight of McClaren taking a bath in palatial surroundings. There's little footage of the Pistols themselves, though what exists is choice: the band's infamous Jubilee Day performance on the Thames, their last gig in San Francisco. Lemper's singing style is perfect for these period pieces, and special credit must go to the arranger--the instrumental backings reek of the decadence of Berlin between the wars and splendidly evoke the sound of that era (the one exception is "Sex Appeal," on which the anachronistic electric guitar part sounds more like 1950s Les Paul than 1930s Weimar Republic). The songs exhibit a remarkable variety of moods and styles, and Ms. Lemper is able to adapt to each one seemingly effortlessly (she even uses various German dialects for different pieces). She did two versions of this album; this one, in German, and another in English translations. I'd say unless you're a complete xenophobe, you should go with the German originals--the sound of the language is a great part of their effect. My biggest complaint, which prevents me from giving this album five stars, is the fact that they do not give literal translations of the lyrics in the printed booklet. Instead, in an appalling cost-cutting measure, they simply print the lyrics used on the English version of the album, presumably so they could use the same insert for both recordings. With even a limited knowledge of German, it is obvious that the English lyrics printed here are not accurate translations at all. They may convey the general mood of the originals, but they do not allow you to appreciate the subtlety and wit of the German lyrics. If you have any experience with song text translations, you know that the combined limitations of the musical meter and rhythm of the original lyrics forces one to choose between accurately translating them and coming up with a version that "sings" well. If you are translating for an actual performance, you are forced to do the latter and sacrifice any attempt at accuracy. But when you are just printing a translation, as on this album, there is no excuse for not providing the actual meanings.』
(Decadent and fun) 『Collection of 1920s and 1930s cabaret songs that were later forbidden as most of composers were jewish. Lemper obviously love this material and she has a great fun with it - they demand both acting and singing talent and she is perhaps born to do this,always makes me wonder why Marlene Dietrich never recorded this as she actually started singing "Das Lila Lied" in cabarets of the time.(And claimed she didn't know what was the song about,hm) Lemper sings them in mock-old fashioned style but goes soft when song need it.Real actress.Of course her pronunciation is spotless and she acts different characters in each song. Surprisingly enough,althought this material comes from bygone era,it sounds modern enough that even today audience will enjoy it - seems that human stupidity,greed,lust,narcissm and obssesions basically never changed - put it on any stage and audience will roar with laughter. I laughed out loud on many occasions while listening this. For those who don't understand german,english translations are also provided in booklet and english version of this album is also recorded,althought I never heard it. Highlights: "Sex appeal" (send up to Garbo),"Peter" (o.k. at least Marlene Dietrich recorded that one) and hillarious "Tamerlan" where lady complains that world is full of wimps and daydreams about some "Attila The Hun" to come and brutalise her just a little bit.I dare you not to laugh when you hear this. Ah yes,music itself is also very very good.』

(Fabulous Ute. Buy both German and English versions!!!) 『`Berlin Cabaret Songs' by Ute Lemper are issued as part of London recording company's `Entartete Musik' series or music suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the very best things about this issue is the fact that Ms. Lemper and London have issued the album in two versions. One is in the original German and one is sung entirely in English.
For starters, I strongly suggest you listen to both, but if you simply have no interest in listening to the German version, I will reassure you that the English performance is musically virtually identical to the German. The instrumentals almost sound as if they were done Kareoke style, with Ms. Lemper's English or German mixed in afterwards. I'm almost certain this was not actually done, as the translations probably changed a few things here and there about the meter of the lyrics, but I could find nothing in the instrumental or vocal performances to prefer in one over the other, except for the genuine experience of hearing it the same way as the cabaret audiences in Berlin would hear it.
Ms. Lemper's English interpretations, as they are in all her earlier albums, is impecible. It also seems to be about as accent free as you can imagine. Not only is it free of German inflections, it is free of a British accent as well, so it should sound great to American ears.
The first thing which strikes me about the lyrics of these songs is that to my ear, there is practically nothing which is critical or even satiric of a specific government. There is not even much which is sexually explicit, let alone lewd. Some pieces from Kurt Weill in `Mahagonny' may be more objectionable than most songs in this album. One thing that tells us is exactically how extremely conservative the Nazis were about any art whatsoever. The most strident politically oriented song is in favor of women's rights and makes no mention of the Nazi government or any other political party for that matter.
The only weakness of the album may be that virtually all this material is unfamiliar to the average listener, so we don't have the pleasure of seeing how Ms. Lemper does a new version of, for example, `Bilbao Song' or Jacques Brel's `Amsterdam'. But then, I relish any chance whatsoever to hear Ms. Lemper sing. She is still fresh and free of the kind of syrupy sweetness we get from, for example, Barbra Streisand, these days from her `Guilty Pleasures' album. 』
(Eine Schoene Album!) 『Wow! This beautiful and immensely talented dame knows how to thrill. The album is absolutely superb. And auf Deutsch! There are many jazzy and big band type numbers and some that are a little more folky. But the satire, the humour, the depth of the lyrics, along with the pure artistry and sophistication Ute Lemper brings to the material is quite refreshing, despite the fact that some uncomfortable and depressing topics are covered. What a relief, a modern artist that encourages her audience actually to think! Thank you so much Ute for such a treasure and bringing these important songs to our attention; with all that is going on in our politics and the world these Berlin songs are even more poignant for our times than one may suppose.』
Nature wins this one. In a series of circumstances unlikely and macabre, one of two twin boys loses most of his genitalia in a surgical accident. (How on earth did THAT happen...I guess I'm happy this documentary doesn't go into details.) The well-meaning mother, who is interviewed in this little film, explains how an expert on such matters counseled that the boy be raised as a girl. This doesn't work out. Not at all. I became incredibly angry at the doctor whose advise set this horrible plan into motion.
Because this is Nova, the sensational aspects of this case are diminished while the viewer is asked to explore questions of gender identity from a psychological and sociological perspective. Which I appreciated.
I suppose that this sad and notorious story has had a positive effect, shoving the medical community away from making such poor decisions. There are some parts of our internal wiring that can't be re-routed.

And in the bargain I got reacquainted with one of my favorite performances...Bottom Line: She passed, had fun (and actually like the Bard's comedy), and now I have this classic in my collection. They have a fresh raw comedic taste that sweeps all the B- comedies of late under the rug. It can be very raunchy and offensive, but why hold them back? Only comparable to Kevin Smith films, the Judd Apatow movies aren't afraid to unvail all the taboo were so afraid of.
Knocked up is different from the "circles'" other movies, because it has so much more substance. The unplanned pregnancy is what happens quite frequently these days, and I believe this movie encourages us to take a closer look. The movie may be built of crude jokes, but by the end it will be tugging at your heart strings. I'm sure it takes a lot of talent to create a movie that appeals to both women and men, and furthermore to create it so unrated and yet sincere. I reccomend this film very much to those who have an open mind for comedy, because it really does have constructive behavior as well as guilty pleasure.
The Blu-ray treatment is great, and I really have no complaints. I'm really fed up with Universal's universal blu-ray menu, but aside from all that the movie pulls along fine. Some of the special features are just as funny as the movie. "Finding Ben Stone" has got to be one of the most comical special extra on a blu-ray/dvd I have ever seen. The special features weigh more than the cost of the blu-ray.
So like everyone else will say, if you liked "Superbad" and "40 Year Old Virgin" you have to add this to your collection. It's Superbad with a stronger theme and realer circumstances. If you're looking for a great comedy that you can take something from, Knocked Up is the movie you're looking for.』

(Real fun movie and great on blu ray) 『Writer/director Judd Apetow is building his own franchise and making a real name for himself with his high quality comedies with his unique special brand of humor and great casting. SUPERBAD does seem to be the most popular thus far but KNOCKED UP is in the same league for me.
Story line is pretty basic. We have an average stoner guy and a beautiful professional woman who meet at a bar, get drunk, have sex and she gets pregnant. In real life such different types of people may not try to make a relationship work but here it is very believable and the development of each character about life, love and acceptance is very realistic as the pregnancy develops. Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen are in top form as their lives are forever altered. Dialogue is funny, circumstances are realistic and having the marriage of Heigl's sister to compare with works great. Paul Rudd shines here and steals all the scenes he is in.
This is a bawdy comedy but manages to put across positive messages about safe sex, responsibility and the fact that relationships can be difficult. It is not a message film by any means but it manages to spread a good positive vein about life and its complications.
Blu ray usually is put to its best use with action films or films with great cinematography which show how the 1080p can be brilliant and how audio can transcend. Comedies can sometimes appear bland on blu ray but this film is crisp, colors are vibrant and video and audio are both at levels above that of the regular dvd. There is much talk of this movie being too long. For me it was not. You will either love it or you won't. For me it had a purpose in the length and the character development also warranted it.
I highly recommend the blu ray version of this film as well as the film itself.』

(Oversimplifies gender roles a bit, not for somewhat healthy marriages looking to get even healthier) 『Honestly, this is probably a case of me buying the "wrong book" for my needs. I bought this based on the largely positive feedback. Upon reading, I discovered the book is largely directed to couples that have broken off communication altogether, are on the defensive with each other constantly, and are steps away from breaking it off. I gathered from the title that it would address communication barriers, certainly, which I believe men and women have between each other naturally. I just didn't realize the extent to which the author would build a case tying nearly everything wrong in a marriage back to the male's need for unabashed acceptance and glorification (i.e. not being shamed) and the female need for security.
I DO actually agree with the author that, in general, these are traits of the genders, accordingly. I just feel the book oversimplifies and generalizes things a bit too much. It paints men as neanderthals, unable (biologically) to communicate, while women are all incessant naggers and nit pickers.
In my own relationship, this simply isn't the case. No relationship is perfect, and certainly my marriage is far from it, but I (the husband) am quite often the instigator of relationship talk. She seldom nags, we do tell each other we love one another regularly, and there is a general respect and kindness in our home.
We certainly could use improvement in many areas, which I hoped to find in this book. Instead, by far and large, I found a certainly well developed case that shame and fear are at the core of nearly every relational challenge.
The book did have a few high points for me, which will make the $10 Kindle download pay itself back fairly quickly. The last chapter, a formula for marital improvement, is (although a bit hokey) more than likely a gold pot. It's a short list of super simple routines you can perform daily to demonstrate your love and build a stronger relationship. Also, buried within the rhetoric on shame and fear are some very true but ugly behaviors we nearly all exhibit, and some great ways to accept and acknowledge their root cause and

Okay, that's a little harsh...For someone who's clueless about sex, it's definitely a good start. Actually, it can teach you enough to be pretty effective in the bed, but not as much specifics and techniques as I would have liked.
As a man, I prefer Mr. Manpower's guide. I've learned a lot more specific techniques and information, and it is written by a man who can physically experience all these things, and personally share how to maximize yuor sexual potential as a man...with more intimate knowledge of his sexuality than a woman could have.
I did, however, find the guide enjoyable to read, and picked up a thing or two, but as far as a sex guide for men, I would recommend Mr. Manpower's Guide.

These books used to be fun, but now they are just annoying. Callie is a horrible person, yet we are supposed to think she is cool and fun and relate to her. She is selfish, using Brandon, messing up his good relationship with a girl who finally appreciates him, then dumps him because her last boyfriend she dumped comes back, and she wants him yet again.
The other thing that irritates me about this book is the way the guys are treated. If gives the impression that girls should only date guys who treat them like garbage. Why do Brandon and Julian get dumped on all of the time?
Brett is a psycho, reading her boyfriends phone log, and he still takes her back? She treated her other boyfriend like garbage too, yet if he wasn't perfect, or had sex before she did, she flips out! I want to smack her all the time.
I also think it's totally laughable that Isaac thinks Jenny is so deep and "different" from all the other girls. Um, she has less money, and that's it. She is also a huge snob (her treatment of Yvonne Stidder) and is obsessed with clothes and fitting in with the "cool girls". Why else would she want to have a party? She wants the clothes, the cash and all that. But, what, because she can draw she is so much better then the other girls?
Needless to say, this will be the last book of the series for me.』
