(A Most Pleasant Find) 『If you've never heard the music of the Revolting Cocks (REVCO) before, this is the release to buy (Although I love Cocked and Loaded and Beers, Steers, and Queers, etc.). Despite what other fans/critics of the music have stated in their reviews about the band not sounding the same in this new, updated 2009 configuration, I found the musicianship and compositions to be outstanding. Every track on this release is ultra-strong.
This is a side-project of Illinois' (and now Texas') Ministry, but REVCO seems to be grounded in a spirit of humor (some dark, some sophomoric) and musical experimentation - with pounding drum beats (programmed and live), nasty distorted guitar riffs, and lots of excellent "noise" (samples and such) thrown in for good measure.
There are techno aspects and some industrial-metal aspects to the band's sound, but it's difficult to categorize their music under the aegis of one sound, or genre. There are those who will probably vehemently disagree with what I am about to say: if you are a fan of Steve Albini and Big Black (Chicago band), then you'll truly appreciate REVCO (2009),there's a similar philosophy of music, here, but not necessarily a similar style of music that the two bands share. One requires the same mind-set in order to truly appreciate these groups.
The CD art on Sex-O Olympic-O is outstanding, a throwback to pulp art, old movie posters and soft cover detective (private dick) novels. Stand out tracks (although, as stated above, one will not be skipping tracks on this disk) are as follows: Hookerbot 3000; Red Parrot; Robo Bandidos; Cousins; Lude Ferigno; and, the spectacular I'M NOT GAY!
It's listed as a 2009 release for 13th Planet Music, and I got it at a second-hand shop for next to nothing. I'm just happy that the person that traded this disk in didn't have what it takes to appreciate this band, because quite literally, this is one of the best music purchases I've made this year.
In fact, I traded an o-so-lame Black Label Society CD for it.

(Green Andy Reviews: The Revolting Cocks - Sex-O Olympic-O) 『So bandleader Al Jourgenson considers this record to be one of the best he's ever made, to the point where he's thinking about postponing his retirement from music as a result? I'm sure he's not taking my opinion into account, but if he really considers this album to be that great, I think his judgment might be impaired enough where retirement could be a good idea. Sex-O Olympic-O isn't the worst album ever made, but it's surprisingly tired-sounding and not nearly as funny or outrageous as the group seems to think it is.
This latest version of the band, with new vocalist Josh Bradford and rhythm section Sin Quinn and Clayton Worbeck, do a pretty faithful recreation of the group's Wax Trax Records-derived industrial rock, with loping post-punk bass lines and rigid drums pounding away behind the heavy guitars and monotone keyboards. Although the production is loud and punchy, the music itself sounds curiously dated, like these are remastered tracks from 1988 or so. The percussion occasionally bursts into a more modern glammy stomp, but other than that, this is nothing we haven't heard before. Industrial clichés abound, like the clubby opening to "I'm Not Gay", and likewise Bradford's distorted snarl seems to be trying hard to replicate Chris Connelly's classic vocals, but he lacks the former Cocks contributor's sense of dignity. Of course, the material he's got to work with is way inferior. Obviously this isn't supposed to be a serious band, but they used to be enjoyably funny. Songs like "Hookerbot 3000" and "Lude Ferrigno" are just stupid, even by the group's sophomoric standards.
Al Jourgenson has a signature production style, and nothing he makes is ever completely worthless, and some of the music here does work despite the corny lyrics, like "Robo Bandidos" and "Abundant Redundancy", and in particular "Red Parrot" is about the most successful song on the album at capturing the sleazy sense of fun that falls so flat on the other songs. But overall, this record misses way more often than it hits, so unless you're an Al Jourgenson creepy superfan, I'd steer clear of it.』
(A strong 70s dance feel mixed with some 90s techno/industrial) 『The Good "HookerBot3000" is out future according to the band, and it's set to a seductive beat. Al Jourgensen's signature vocal effect portray a futuristic feel and time. "Red Parrot" delivers some commanding guitars to the hypnotic beats that the group have been putting forth thus far. Clearly the Revolting Cocks has an affliction for a robotic future as they delve into the future of cowboys with "Robo Banditos." No subject is too taboo for the REVCO with "Cousins." Despite its cringe inducting implications, the track is rather catchy. "Abundant Redundancy" is an all out aural assault with guitars and electronic effect fighting it out for your attention.
The Bad Do you like your Al Jourgensen hard rock or techno/industrial?
The Verdict It's good to hear that Jourgensen hasn't walked away from the music scene, only Ministry (for now I'm sure). If you've never heard the Revolting Cocks before (like me) than you'll be surprised to hear a strong 70s dance feel mixed with some 90s techno/industrial. Think early Ministry or KMFDM with less guitars. Sex-O Olympic-O is just as hot and powerful as any Ministry album, just with fewer guitars and angry rants. The album is highly sexual and taboo at times, and is set to some of the most come-hither beats you'll ever hear.』

I'm not entirely sure what I expected from this video as I settled down to watch it with my Hubby a couple of evenings ago. I've always been hesitant about watching so called instructional videos but you know me I'll try anything once. I think I half expected to see perfectly coiffured women with towels wrapped around themselves as burly male masseur's attended to their every whim and showed me how my Hubby could do the same, what we actually watched was a deeply erotic, sensual and strangely relaxing film. The whole tone of the film is well set from the beginning, as we watch a woman busy herself lighting candles as she prepares to surprise her Hubby. This couple will feature prominently within the video and unlike most adult films I could actually identify with this couple. Her Hubby enters the room and she turns on the VCR so they can watch the same film as we are. At this point the film fades into the couples TV set and we're transported to another view, the same view as they are watching. What follows is a short introduction by DR Lonnie Barbach, not so long that it's boring, but just enough to set up the mood for what is to follow. She explains that massage is about more than a means to an end and that by setting aside time for yourself as a couple you can probably do more for your relationship than going out for an expensive evening. I personally loved the fact the emphasis of the whole film was the simple pleasure that you can receive by simply touching or being touched by your partner, something that many of us and, yeah that includes me are apt to forget. The massage itself was broken into two parts, the back and front of the body. The main difference between this film and most adult films was the couple actually looked like they enjoyed the experience. Oh, I should probably mention here that throughout the whole film both couples were naked, not a towel in sight thankfully. After watching them give each other a deeply relaxing massage, yes you could tell that from the video-)) You're transported back to the VCR couple as they begin to show us the moves that accompany a great frontal massage. It was great to have a clear visual reference as we listened to the instructions and it made repeating the moves latter much easier. Then we move back to our bedroom couple and once again they put into practice what they have just learnt. What's it all add up to? This is an extremely couple orientated with the emphasis firmly put on enjoying each partner and enlivening your senses as far as sex is concerned. If your looking for a wild sex movie then this is not the movie for you but if on the other hand you are looking for a film that you can safely watch with your partner and learn something at the same time this is a must have. With easy to follow and clear instructions regarding the actual do's and don'ts when it comes to giving and receiving a massage, and yet don't make you feel like a kindergarten all add up to make this a pleasurable learning experience for both partners. These songs all explore the theme of romance sung by some of the greatest female artists of the day. It's great to see how these songbirds used simple everyday words to convey romantic ideas to their public without being caught by the censors. Wow!
The legendary Bessie Smith begins the track set with "I Need A Little Sugar In My Bowl." Awesome! Bessie sings this bluesy number to a tee and she never misses a note! The piano accompaniment works well but it still lets Bessie's vocals remain squarely in the spotlight. "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa" by Sister Rosetta Tharpe sports a big band flavor with a great male backup chorus to make this number take flight! Sister Rosetta sings this with all her heart and it shows as you listen to "I Want A Tall Skinny Papa."
"Just Give Me A Man" from Mabel Scott does indeed offer romantic hope to all men as she sings of how she wants to spend time with just about any--or all--of the men she can get her hands on! What a hoot! Mabel sings very well and the musical accompaniment enhances "Just Give Me A Man." Awesome!
Some of the songs on this CD use certain words to be rather suggestive. Take a listen to "Sam The Hot Dog Man" by Lil Johnson with its great arrangement and "Hot Nuts (Get 'Em From The Peanut Man)." I think you can put two and two together for yourself. SMILE
There's also an interesting early recording by Dinah Washington entitled "My Lovin' Papa;" we see Dinah showcasing her talents as a first rate jazz singer as early as 1945. Great! Sister Rosetta Tharpe returns to perform again; this time she performs "Rock Me," an excellent tune indeed. Love that guitar intro!
One of the more recent numbers on this CD would be the superb "Rocket 69" performed so ably by Connie Allen with a backup chorus harmonizing to perfection! "Rocket 69" sports that early rock and roll flavor which works wonders for this awesome number. Give this one a listen and you'll love it--I am sure of it!
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. This one's gonna be tough because the last number on this CD uses explicit lyrics to explore the subject of love. Lucille Bogan sings "Shave 'Em Dry (Version 2)" with great energy and you can tell she's enjoying every minute of this lascivious song! The sound quality is poor but you'll be able to hear every last word Lucille sings.
The liner notes feature an informative essay by Neil Kellas; and the artwork reflects good judgment. There are beautiful photos of Dinah Washington, Bessie Smith, Lucille Bogan and more!

I don't find Dolphina's references to religion, chakras, or any of the other less-than-commercial ideologies to be detrimental - more her personal view of the inner workings of the dance. I enjoyed it, and found it to be well planned and beautifully presented. Some of the production values - sound, and camera angles, could have been better... (sometimes you can't see her feet, for a move, sometimes the crashing ocean makes her words difficult to hear), but overall I found it to be an excellent value, an enjoyable session, and probably a lot more akin to the dances of our ancient mothers, in character, than some of the Raqs Sharqi instructionals structured in discipline like a modern ballet class.

What might be more important, even still, and is to me as instructor of the play, is that my tenth grade English Language Learners, year after year, find themselves in hysterics throughout the entire film. The mechanicals are ridiculously amusing in their acting attempts, Puck is crazily funny, and the four lovers exaggerated facial expressions and antics towards one another are without compare. It is an old black and white film, and yet the high schoolers of the 21st century prefer it, and thoroughly enjoy it. If you teach this play, buy THIS version.』

I have seen many other versions since, but this black-and white rendition remains the best, to this day. I own a copy on VHS, but I'm happy to see that it is now finally available on DVD.』

This could only beA Midsummer Night's Dream, Warner Bros.' 1935 attempt at classing up the proletarian studio. The legendary German stage director Max Reinhardt had produced the play at the Hollywood Bowl to enchanted, sold-out audiences, and Warners decided to hand Reinhardt the keys to the studio (along with fellow Germans William Dieterle, co-director, and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who adapted Mendelssohn's music). Reinhardt created an eye-popping phantasmagoria, a movie laced with sparkling sequins, flying fairies, and moon-kissed forests. As for the words, Reinhardt had a collection of Warners studio players, notably James Cagney as Bottom, whose playing of "Pyramus and Thisby" with Joe E. Brown is perhaps the movie's comic high point. The other actors are decidedly varied, and they tend to be overwhelmed by the production design. Not so Mickey Rooney, whose performance as Puck is a feral, antic act of imagination (he was 14 during filming); picture a boy raised by wolves who somehow memorized Shakespeare. His Puck growls and screams and mocks the drama of the other characters, a little postmodern imp before his time. (Critic David Thomson called this Puck "truly inhuman, one of the cinema's most arresting pieces of magic"). With lots of big name actors including William Holden, Richard Mulligan, Robert Preston, Larry Hagman, Shelly Winters, and Julie Andrews to name a few, S.O.B. is a movie that is still relevant. Hollywood egos still power the money-making machine, and people still give lip service to carrying about what happens to each other even while stabbing each other in the back.

When I saw it was available on DVD, I had to buy it immediately. I have bought some flicks that I liked as a kid, and after watching them as an adult thought "How could I have ever liked that"? That is not the case with this movie. It does seem a bit disjointed, watching the different story lines play out, but the movie is just as funny to me now as it was 25 years ago. There was no issue there, Lili St. Crow wrote another fantastic novel! Betrayals picks up where Dru story's ended with Strange Angels and sweeps you right back into her world with a fast paced story jam packed with action, mystery, secrets, and tension.
I continue to be impressed with Lili St. Crows writing. She's managed to create this amazing world for Strange Angels that I absolutely love. The action never lets up, and Lili St. Crow leaves readers guessing. You think somethings finally going to go right or this'll happen, and Lili St. Crow takes you off in a completely different direction than what you think. There were so many times I found myself yelling at characters, and screaming WHAT!?!.
Betrayals was a book that answered some of your questions, but left you with even more! Also you learn so much more about the mythology and story of the werewulfen, djamphir, nosferatu, etc. I thought it was simply fascinating!
Dru continues to be stubborn and set in her ways - but that's what you love about her! If she let anyone push her around she'd no longer be Dru. She's such a strong character. Dru also grew as a character in Betrayals. You see more of Dru than the tough girl she puts on. You start to see the vulnerable girl behind the tough face more. Though, I cannot wait for Dru to wake up and smell the coffee - errr.... Apple Pie? Readers get to see more of Christophe. *swoons* I was majorly crushing on Christophe in Strange Angels, and the swoonage only grew in Betrayals. You get to learn more about Christophe and his past. Betrayals gives Graves a new light. I liked him as a character in Strange Angels, but in Betrayals he really grew as a character. He still is no match for the one and only Christophe. You also get introduced to many other new characters. Dibs is one you meet and is one of my favorites.
This is a must read. I cannot see where Lili St. Crow takes Dru and her friends in book 3! She's set the stage for another amazing story. Gosh, is it June yet? I need Jealously.』
(Intriguingly Disturbing) 『Dru Anderson's mother was killed, and now Dru's being hunted. The Schola is supposed to keep her safe, but in a place full of djamphir and werwulfen, "safe" is a relative term - especially considering there's an unknown traitor in the midst. Meanwhile, Dru's own powers are getting closer to "blooming", and she's been betrayed so many times she can no longer trust anyone - especially not herself.
The featured creatures in BETRAYALS are intriguingly disturbing, and bloody well creative, particularly the Broken. The lashings of Romanian words and phrases are deliciously exotic, and definitely welcome. I don't understand some things Christophe Reynard says, though, likely because Dru doesn't know, either. And the book would be easier to follow if it came with a glossary. There are some terms, and differences between them, that I don't quite understand, and a handy guide would be appreciated. eg. "svetocha"; differences between "djamphir", "nosferatu" and Kouroi; differences between werwulfen and "loup-garou"; etc. I'm still not sure to what the Strange Angels series title is referring, and I'd guess the Ravelle, only they barely get a look-in here.
Beware the cliff-hanger ending - Book 3, JEALOUSY, won't be published until 24th June 2010.
P.S. Two thoughts Dru has in relation to Graves make me feel uncomfortable: "A flush crept up into his sallow cheeks. Under the Asian coloring he could really change it up." Also, "Knelt down carefully, and I could see how pale he was under his ethnic coloring." I may be overly PC, but these comments don't quite sit well with me. Then again, I'm white trash so my knowledge of race relations is probably lacking.』 『Sheâs no angel . . .

I wasn't going to read this one, but my sister convinced me to give it a try. I discovered that this book is extremely suspenseful, as well as surprising and dark, with many twists and turns. The characters are so believable that I began to consider them my own friends as well as Cassie's. Each member of the Circle has a distinct personality and realistic points of view on each problem they deal with.
The danger in this book forces all of the Circle's members bond and stick together through thick and thin. Half of the time, it was like a horror movie, with me screaming at Cassie' NOT TO OPEN THAT DOOR or NOT TO GO IN THERE ALONE! Of course, Cassie never listened and left me gripping the edge of my seat while she the delves deeper into the world of magic and secrets.
L.J. Smith has done it again! She is a master of creating wonderful characters and tense plots. Her books always leave me wanting more. Bravo!』

I wish he asked Chris to the dance. I would have like a guy she couldn't take seriously. I was just frustrated and at times i thought Black John was manipulating Nick cause he was almost dark.
