(But both versions of this cd)
(Fabulous Ute. Buy both German and English versions!!!)
(Eine Schoene Album!)
(English version available?) Collection of 1920s and 1930s cabaret songs that were later forbidden as most of composers were jewish. Lemper obviously love this material and she has a great fun with it - they demand both acting and singing talent and she is perhaps born to do this, always makes me wonder why Marlene Dietrich never recorded this as she actually started singing "Das Lila Lied" in cabarets of the time.(And claimed she didn't know what was the song about,hm) Lemper sings them in mock-old fashioned style but goes soft when song need it.Real actress.Of course her pronunciation is spotless and she acts different characters in each song. Surprisingly enough, althought this material comes from bygone era,it sounds modern enough that even today audience will enjoy it - seems that human stupidity, greed, lust, narcissm and obssesions basically never changed - put it on any stage and audience will roar with laughter. I laughed out loud on many occasions while listening this. For those who don't understand german, english translations are also provided in booklet and english version of this album is also recorded, althought I never heard it. Highlights: "Sex appeal" (send up to Garbo),"Peter" (o.k. at least Marlene Dietrich recorded that one) and hillarious "Tamerlan" where lady complains that world is full of wimps and daydreams about some "Attila The Hun" to come and brutalise her just a little bit.I dare you not to laugh when you hear this. Ah yes, music itself is also very very good. There are both English and German versions of this cd. You'll need both. Every moment you continue to read, you could be listening to Ute sing. Get out of here! `Berlin Cabaret Songs' by Ute Lemper are issued as part of London recording company's `Entartete Musik' series or music suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the very best things about this issue is the fact that Ms. Lemper and London have issued the album in two versions. One is in the original German and one is sung entirely in English.
For starters, I strongly suggest you listen to both, but if you simply have no interest in listening to the German version, I will reassure you that the English performance is musically virtually identical to the German. The instrumentals almost sound as if they were done Kareoke style, with Ms. Lemper's English or German mixed in afterwards. I'm almost certain this was not actually done, as the translations probably changed a few things here and there about the meter of the lyrics, but I could find nothing in the instrumental or vocal performances to prefer in one over the other, except for the genuine experience of hearing it the same way as the cabaret audiences in Berlin would hear it.
Ms. Lemper's English interpretations, as they are in all her earlier albums, is impecible. It also seems to be about as accent free as you can imagine. Not only is it free of German inflections, it is free of a British accent as well, so it should sound great to American ears.
The first thing which strikes me about the lyrics of these songs is that to my ear, there is practically nothing which is critical or even satiric of a specific government. There is not even much which is sexually explicit, let alone lewd. Some pieces from Kurt Weill in `Mahagonny' may be more objectionable than most songs in this album. One thing that tells us is exactically how extremely conservative the Nazis were about any art whatsoever. The most strident politically oriented song is in favor of women's rights and makes no mention of the Nazi government or any other political party for that matter.
The only weakness of the album may be that virtually all this material is unfamiliar to the average listener, so we don't have the pleasure of seeing how Ms. Lemper does a new version of, for example, `Bilbao Song' or Jacques Brel's `Amsterdam'. But then, I relish any chance whatsoever to hear Ms. Lemper sing. She is still fresh and free of the kind of syrupy sweetness we get from, for example, Barbra Streisand, these days from her `Guilty Pleasures' album.
Wow! This beautiful and immensely talented dame knows how to thrill. The album is absolutely superb. And auf Deutsch! There are many jazzy and big band type numbers and some that are a little more folky. But the satire, the humour, the depth of the lyrics, along with the pure artistry and sophistication Ute Lemper brings to the material is quite refreshing, despite the fact that some uncomfortable and depressing topics are covered. What a relief, a modern artist that encourages her audience actually to think! Thank you so much Ute for such a treasure and bringing these important songs to our attention; with all that is going on in our politics and the world these Berlin songs are even more poignant for our times than one may suppose. I recieved this disc for review when I was a radio station DJ about three years ago. However the disc I got, which was on Polygram, was in English. So try to get the English disc if you don't speak German - the translations are great, you'd think the songs were written in English. It has the same title I think, if it is still available. One other reviewer here said that he found the album more relevant to his life than the entire top 40 and I say 'hear, hear' to that. And Ms. Lemper's heffy Cherman eccent is delightful! (LP never sounded betta)
(A Work of Art! Important Album! Poor Sound Quality!) This is a very interesting item in that Rhino chose to release a painfully accurate reproduction of the original package that puts things back as they were instead adding things that were never there. It seems that over the years each pressing of this record (legitimate and otherwise) has taken a little more of the original away. This package brings it all back home on a fine quality of wax.
A review of the contents of the music is pretty much pointless. We all know what it sounds like. It is loud and hard. We know the songs and thought we knew the order. One of the fixes this makes is that it puts the songs back in the order they first came in. In the end most people are buying this as a piece of history so they will never hear a minor difference like that.
Frankly I would be happy if this closed the lid on this piece of musical history. It would be a fitting end to the means. I still think this album in any form holds its own in any format.
The one downside to this release is that some sellers will almost certainly try to pass it off as the original hoping that some sucker wont notice the Rhino logo. Other than that it is a nice addition to the endless stories in the history of the one and only studio album the Sex Pistols recorded and everybody else releases. The previous review for this should be stricken from the record, it does not refer to this specific edition of this punk masterpiece. This is the heavy duty 2008 vinyl edition and it has never sounded better, although it never really sounded all that bad in any of its previous incarnations. Having said that, if you're in the market for an upgrade, you can do no better than some fresh 180 gram vinyl. The Sex Pistols and this album are very important in the whole history of rock and roll because of its influence on countless other bands and musicians to come such as Nirvana, The Clash, Green Day and other punk bands not to mention Heavy and Thrash Metal bands. Although they by no means were the first and only to start the punk movement as many others could lay claim to this honour e.g. The Ramones, The Velvet Underground and even Blondie but the Sex Pistols did have talent but they just chose to play in a certain discordant style to put their message across but that doesn't mean the album isn't good or that they're not good musicians. I thought the guitar solo on "God Save the Queen" was pretty good and I think this track is their best ever.
You have to listen to the album for what it is and what it stands for and as an early representative of the punk rock genre, this is actually very good. I'm just disappointed that after waiting for years for a remastered version ala what Iggy Pop did with his brilliant "Raw Power" album, this is what they came up with with any benefit from alleged remastering barely recognisable from the original cd I bought many, many years ago. The Stooges' remastering of "Raw Power" added extra life to what was a dated album and it now sounds like it could have been released today and this was what the Pistols could have done with this album but alas they let the chance slip away. If you already have this album, I wonder why you would want to spend so much more for pretty much the same disc albeit with an mlps packaging. The mlps design is made from thin, flimsy cardboard and is nothing to shout about given the many better mlps designs that I've seen out there although an insert with all the lyrics in both English and Japanese is included together with a fold out colour poster which is quite cool.
My recommendation: a must have for any serious music hobbist's collection but bear in mind that this version's sound quality isn't a material improvement over the version you already have and so you may end up paying a great deal more for what amounts to very expensive cardboard and a poster. The Sex Pistols' only studio album, 1977's Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols was called 'just about the most exciting rock&roll records of the Seventies' in Rolling Stone's original review. A quarter-century later, with none of the album's scathing fury and massive influence diminished, the magazine ranked this title #41 on its list of the '500 Greatest Albums Of All Time' and rightly deemed it, 'the Sermon on the Mount of English punk'. This album is now available on 180-gram virgin vinyl. Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007. customer 's review (One of the Best Bond Films) THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is a big-budgeted opulent film, with a lively and strong screenplay by Christopher Wood and Richard Maibaum and very effective editing by John Glen, delivering one of the most succinctly structured films of the series under the direction of Lewis Gilbert. After THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN Roger Moore clearly redefined his approach to the role as the good-natured British agent. His Bond is suave, debonair, never condescending and resorts to seriousness only when confronted with malevolence. That was the way he played it for the rest of the series. The globetrotting THE SPY WHO LOVED ME featured a gadget laden Lotus Esprit as its centerpiece along with Richard Kiel as the indestructible Jaws the villain's henchman with steel teeth. The main villain of the piece is the maniacal Karl Stromberg, played with detached amusement by Curt Jurgens, whose immense wealth featured an aquatic empire aimed at global domination. Bond must pair up with Soviet agent Major Anya Amasova played by Barbara Bach to track down missing nuclear submarines. The pre-title sequence features a very thrilling and well-filmed ski chase re-establishing James Bond as a major force to be reckoned with. Marvin Hamlisch composed a very effective score to the surprise of many. His music is right on mark and in some sequences very innovative. Hamlisch proves that he really knows how to score a film. Ken Adam returned as production designer bringing a familiar look back to the series not seen since DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Ken Adam also introduced some new concepts giving the film a well-known but unique look. New characters are introduced in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME who would return in subsequent films of the series. They include Walter Gotell as Russian General Gogol, Geoffrey Keen as the British Minister of Defense and Eva Reuber-Staier as Rubelvitch, Gogol's secretary. Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny and in expanded roles Bernard Lee as "M" and Desmond Llewelyn as "Q" Major Boothroyd are thankfully all back. There are well-choreographed great action scenes, beautiful underwater sequences, battles and chases. Some of the best-unsung workmanship in this film is the extraordinary miniatures by Derek Meddings. They are incredible and make this film very impressive and memorable. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME is one of those rare films where all the talents come together at their peek of perfection delivering an impeccable film.
When a massive underwater craft abducts U.S. and Russian submarines, global tensions are heightened to the brink of war. In order to find the true culprit, James Bond joins forces with beautiful Russian secret agent Anya Amasaova (Barbara Bach). Together they follow a trail that leads to Karl Stromberg (Curt Jurgens), a powerful shipping magnate who is implementing a horrific scheme for world domination. Bond struggles to foil the plot, but Stromberg has provided him with the most lethal adversary: Jaws (Richard Kiel), a seemingly indestructible steel-toothed giant. Agent 007's adventure takes him to the Egyptian pyramids, under the sea and to a mountaintop ski chase that builds to one of the most amazing stunts ever filmed. Rerations < The Spy Who Loved Me >

customer 's review (One of the best that I have seen in a long time)
(EXCELLENT)
(Kelli McCarty)
(Kelley Cauthen is BACK!) Few movies in this theme have a storyline that an average person would be interested in, but this one does. Imagine that you find out that you are a twin to a famous rock star who craves getting out of the spot light for a little while. The rock star offers to pay you to take his place for a little while he skips town for a bit of R&R. Further during the week many women are throwing themselves at you. This is a great one for a evening at home, but get the kids off to bed before you pop it in the VHS or DVD. The men and women are not always clothed. Can't seem to recall the cast but the oriental woman in the movie does an incredible strip scene. This is a top notch soft core erotica film with a good plot and excellent sex simulations. It shold be noted that it also features the beautiful Keri Windsor, a top porn star. I just got this is the mail and I was surprised the first review didn't mention Kelli McCarty, she flirts with you through the whole movie and delivers at the end i.e. the unrated version. Just saw the unrated version of this one last night, and it's good to see Kelley Cauthen in the director's chair again after recently being behind the scenes as producer, etc. No one does these films better than Kelley -- lots of torrid action (both boy-girl and girl-girl), excellent production values, and actors who seem to enjoy themselves thoroughly.Another compelling reason to see this one: it features two of the loveliest women the Playboy/Eros folks have ever given us, Catalina Larranaga and Tracy Angeles (as she's billed here, but previously also known as Tracy Ryan and Tracy Smith). Both women have gorgeous, all-natural bodies, and in Catalina's case especially, a real screen presence. She has acting skills that suggest she'll go the way of Jennifer Hammon (from"Allyson is Watching") and cross over into mainstream films and TV. In the meantime, though, thanks for giving us yet more of her and Tracy too! Rerations < Playboy / Hollywood Sex Fantasy (Unrated) >

(O'Hara and Wayne at their BEST)
(Funny Film with Timeless Words of Wisdom)
(Fun Movie) Great movie! Cute story. Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne have a magnetic chemistry which makes this movie work. Chill Wills is always fabulous in his supporting role. Comedy, romance, love, stubborn pride, etc. Nice romantic comedy with a western setting. This was a fun movie when I was young, and still is. It really is pretty sexist by today's standards, but still enjoyable to watch. I finally own the movie that almost out does the Quiet Man. If you love O'Hara and Wayne together, you cannot miss this one. A thrilling comedy for the whole family for now and years to come. You will laugh till it hurts and watch it twice because you will miss a lot while laughing out loud. Amazon delivers an excellent quality DVD. A friend let me borrow this film and I found it funny and cute. Although his version the film was scratchy and not good quality but I bought this one and it was perfect. The sound and picture quality was perfect. I do not have any trouble with my disc.
Words of wisdom: "I can't explain it Becky, but there is something that happens between a man and a women with all that growing up together."
John Wayne at his best! This is one of the best John Wayne movies that I have ever seen. Very funny and exciting to watch. This is up there with Hatari! I would recommend this movie to everyone. Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 10/11/2005 Run time: 127 minutes Rating: Nr John Wayne's most popular vehicle of the 1960s is a broad, boisterous comedy-Western and a family movie in every sense--in subject matter, casting, personnel, and the audience it aims to bear-hug. Wayne and hisQuiet Manpartner Maureen O'Hara reprise their large-boned lovers' quarrel in a Wild West variation onThe Taming of the Shrew, while a cast of familiar supporting players do their best to avoid becoming collateral damage. The picture is fascinating as an attempt to adjust and update the Duke as all-American icon. Rancher George Washington McLintock owns most of the town that bears his name, but James Edward Grant's screenplay is at didactic pains to establish the benevolence and socio-political enlightenment of his reign. G.W.'s former Indian foes have become his pals, he enjoys nothing so much as playing chess with his Jewish merchant buddy (Jack Kruschen), and he's tolerant--as his fellow landowners are not--of the homesteaders crowding into the territory. In what now seems like prescience about where things were headed in the 1960s, he even does his best to achieve rapport with (gasp!) impatient youth. McLintock!was the first movie produced by eldest son Michael Wayne, and the first major assignment for director Andrew V. McLaglen (son ofQuiet Mancostar Victor). It steals like a bandit from a host of much better movies, but the Duke's great good humor and professionalism redoubtably anchor the proceedings.--Richard T. Jameson Rerations < McLintock! (one of cary grant's finest...)
(Please!)
(Fun and frolic!)
(WHY don't they make movies like this anymore??) Howard Hawkes can do it all. The screwball comedy was never better and alas never will be better. I suppose you could say this is a gimmick picture as they use a live leopard in a number of scenes. The Cary Grant brontosaurus has a small part as well.
Hepburn sees Cary the four-eyed prof and goes after the befuddled handsome man with everything a 1930's girl has. Madcap motor-mouth one liners rip away. Cary is embarrassed, disgraced, and horrified for ninety minutes till Hepburn cannot be denied. Amazing fast pace and editing for one of the finest comedies ever made; it can be watched again and again.
This movie is absolutely hilarious! I just love Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in this film! She has her own unique character in this film, she is a bit ditzy, but head over heels in love with Cary Grant's character. He, however, doesn't feel the same about her, but is reluctant to stay with her because she asks him to, or because she keeps preventing him from leaving! This movie is definitely one of my favorite old black&whites. This is so BAD! It's not funny, at all. It's simply not funny. No plot, laughs, likable charaters, nothing good. Skip it, skip it, skip it. No one can be as simply comedic (and clean, too) in slapstick situations as Cary Grant&Katharine Hepburn! This is a good movie to watch when you just want to see ordinary people in absurd, goofy situations. It is great for 'family night' and it is great for an evening alone!
Have fun with it! I've seen this movie about 50 times and it NEVER stops being funny! It's clean, it's silly, it's just a GREAT laugh without any ugliness or violence like everything THINKS it has to have today to be good. Cary Grant is totally out of his "leading man" character in this movie and he's fantastic! This shows no matter what he's asked to play, he's up for the challenge. Katherine Hepburn is one of my all time favorites and as always, she's at the top of her game as a fast talking, often confusing (to poor Cary's character), EVER hysterical, rich girl who seems to have lost her tiger. One of my favorite movie scenes is when she loses the back of her dress and he has to walk her through a restaurant close to her back so no one can see her " accident!" This movie is defintely worth watching over and over especially if you've had a bad day in the "real world" and want to escape to a rip roaring good time that's BOUND to make you giggle and make that bad day melt away! A wild&crazy heiress with a pet leopard named baby sets her sights on an absent-minded paleontologist&inadvertantly makes a shambles of his life. Studio: Turner Hm Entertainm Release Date: 08/06/2007 Starring: Katharine Hepburn Charlie Ruggles Run time: 102 minutes "The love impulse in man," says a psychiatrist inBringing Up Baby, "frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict." That's for sure. For a primer on the rules and regulations of the classic screwball comedy, which throws love and conflict into close proximity, look no further. A straight-laced paleontologist (Cary Grant) loses a dinosaur bone to a dog belonging to free-spirited heiress Katharine Hepburn. In trying to retrieve said bone, Grant is drawn into the vortex surrounding the delicious Hepburn, which becomes a flirtatious pas de deux that will transform both of them. Director Howard Hawks plays the complications as a breathless escalation of their "love impulse," yet the movie is nonetheless romantic for all its speed. (Hawks'sHis Girl Friday, also with Grant, goes even faster.) Grant and Hepburn are a match made in movie heaven, in sync with each other throughout. Not a great box-office success when first released,Bringing Up Babyhas since taken its place as a high-water mark of the screwball form, and it was used as a model for Peter Bogdanovich'sWhat's Up, Doc?--Robert Horton< |
