(The album which redefined what being a punk band entailed. 90/100)

This is a review of the cd with the yellow cover and the track listing in the correct order on the back. I have seen versions of this album with either a green cover or the track listing randomised on the back, all over the place. Not sure which version sounds best, but I am quite happy with this one. The sound quality on this album is quite good, but it sort of sounds like it's all coming from middle distance. E.g. on The Ramones self-titled debut, the vocals and drums, I think, were up front, but the guitars were background, which was annoying. Here, it's all middle...would have been nice to have it all upfront.

Recently I bought this album for the first time on cd, after formerly owning the cassette. This was because recently I've been exploring the origins of punk and I wanted to revisit the album that a novice like me would have thought of as the FIRST punk album. That misconception has been cleared up in the meantime (see my reviews just prior to this one...The Damned released the first punk album in the UK, and The Saints in Australia and Ramones in the US also predated British punk with their debuts). Anyway, my general impression of this album was that it had two of the greatest songs of all time on it and...not much else, really. On first listen I was inclined to give this cd 85/100 just for the strength of those two songs, which NO punk band has matched on debut, and nearly otherwise (The Saints' "Know your product" would be my pick as the greatest punk song of all time, but the two best songs on this album are not that far behind it...they're all classics, in any case). On second listen I found more to like about this album, which I'll got into shortly.

As for The Sex Pistols, their brand of punk was not so much a shot across the bow of The Establishment in Britain as it was a cannonball in the hull. Whereas America's Ramones were pretty much urban degenerates (in tone) who moved in the demi-monde, and Australia's Saints were rebellious boys from the suburbs, The Sex Pistols were different in that they explicitly challenged The Establishment in their lyrics. It's laughable now, but The Establishment actually believed that The Sex Pistols were a threat to the 'natural' order and they were stymied wherever they popped their heads up. See the great documentary on this band "The filth and the fury", which notes how British newspapers blacked out the band's entries in the chart, even though they were top 10, if not #1.

Not being a student of this band, I can't say whether they actually believed their own publicity/posturing. They did have the unfortunate effect of side-lining REAL punks like The Saints, whose do-it-yourself ethos is still an inspirational example to would be musicians. The Sex Pistols' brand of punk required the corporate 'uniform' of safety pins and ripped designer clothes. An image which The Saints were too anarchistic to blindly follow. They fell off the radar as a result...they weren't 'real' punk by the new standard...all style and posturing. As for that posturing...anarchy...revolution...did anyone ever really take that seriously? In my soundtrack to "The great rock'n'roll swindle", there is some artwork which shows The Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious with Nazi paraphernalia. Now, what kind of dunce thinks that anarchy and fascism are even remotely compatible? When The Sex Pistols' Johnny Rotten said at the end of a US concert "You ever get the feeling that you've been had?" I get the feeling that he was really asking himself that question, and not the audience, if the implication for the latter was that the audience had been had.

Back to the album...it's more interesting with the 'lesser' track the second time around, and the drumming is interesting too. It was an episode of "Classic Albums", I think, which revealed to me that their guitarist, Steve Jones, actually performed the bass guitar parts on it, after their 'manager' Malcolm McLaren's Machiavellian manoeuvring had seen original bassist Glen Matlock kicked out by Johnny Rotten, to be replaced by Sid Vicious who looked the part of a punk bass guitarist without actually been competent on the bass part of that equation.

The immortal songs:

God save the Queen - a good riff and excellent, military style drumming, I think. A bleak song with the refrain "Nooooo future". Nihilism incarnate. In fact, this song has more than its fair share of philosophically interesting lyrics and insightful observations: "When there's no future there cannot be sin" and "God save the Queen because tourists are money". The opening track also comments on tourism of a different sort. For an establishment which took the 'threat' from this band seriously, the lyric "We're the future, your future" must have seemed revolutionary. The guitar solo in this song is pure 1950s, I think.

Anarchy in the U.K. - with the iconic intro, this song swings and has a terrific, laddish singalong quality to it. The fuzzy electric guitars in this song recall Led Zeppelin to a certain extent. There is a terrific guitar break in this song which leads into some hand claps. The guitar solo in this song is cool too. Rotten gives a self-defining vocal performance here.

Songs I liked better on second listen:

Holidays in the sun - the opening track. Begins with the sound of marching boots. Has a good riff, bass, and a 1950s style lead guitar. Drummer Paul Cook begins this album with one of his many interesting beats on this album. The best part of this track are the backing vocals, I think. Lyrics include something about "New Belsen", which is reference to The Holocaust. Don't know too much about this band's 'philosophy' on such matters, apart from that drawing of Vicious' Nazi paraphernalia on that soundtrack album I mentioned earlier. American punk band The Dead Kennedys released a song which told Nazi punks where to go, exactly. Perhaps the 'marriage' of punk and Nazism had its origins with The Sex Pistols too? This is the song which also demonstrates Rotten's insight into tourism and the social order.

New York - this is a song which came out of nowhere for me. Hadn't even noted it first listen, like with Holidays, but the second listen a few days later just gave this song an appeal I hadn't noticed before. Having checked out an album by The Heartbreakers, I found out this song was an attack on one of The Heartbreakers' former bands, The New York Dolls. It's quite caustic in dealing with the Dolls. Johnny Thunders, that Doll and Heartbreaker, got his reply in on the excellent "L.A.M.F" album track "London boys", which was quite powerful in its turn. Don't know enough about Rotten, but Thunders really pulls a rock up and shine a light on Rotten. Perhaps both got what they deserved in those song. Anyway, this is a rock song with a nasty sounding riff. The lead guitar outro is very good and 1950s style. This song could be another instance of Rotten taking the high moral ground...in this case, to do with the Dolls' drug taking. But Rotten seems incapable of taking the high moral ground and applying a civil form address at the same time...he gets quite nasty in this song.

Not bad:

Submission - slower tempo song with a groovy riff to it. Not sure if you hear Rotten making kissing noises on this song or if that is a synthesiser...colourful in any case. On second listen I discovered a brief and unexpected melody at 1:38 into the song, which I quite liked and would have been a good part to have expanded on...but maybe for a more pop inclined band. Track has a buzzing guitar sound to it. Rotten's cough at the end brought to mind Black Sabbath's song "Sweet leaf" and others who have 'borrowed' this motif, like Metallica on their great album "Reload" (on the song "Bad seed", I think). Percussive keyboard note utilised.

The rest:

Bodies - gothic, grungy intro...you could imagine this being the intro to a Pixies song. A passionate anti-abortion song, it seems to me. This is the other song where Rotten claims the high moral ground and yet again turns nasty against his subject. Lots of 'F' bombs dropped, so to speak. Has that classic, punk rhythm guitar sound to it.

No feelings - Rotten puts on his snotty-nosed, bovver boy persona...vacuous, violent and narcissistic. Guitar is grungy and grating.

Liar - interesting chugga-chugga riff to start with before the mood of the song changes.

Problems - a hard rock song with a blues rock rhythm (like AC/DC do). Has a 1950s style lead guitar. Features the lyric "You don't do what you want and you fade away". Rotten also violates the word "problem" so that you get the feeling that it isn't an actual word in the English language.

Seventeen - Rotten once again assumes a persona...presumably that of the aged person referenced in the song title. He has a caricature punk accent, or perhaps that of the said 17 year old snot nosed punk. The tone might be described as 'mocking', as far as the song's subject goes. Cook's drumming is interesting times here. Whereas a band like The Ramones had descriptive lyrics, The Sex Pistols seemed to inhabit their characters more...the lyrics here are confrontational and revel in that fact. Sample lyric "I'm a lazy sod".

Pretty vacant - another song where Rotten invokes a mocking tone on the subjects of his gaze. Has an iconic lead guitar note picking introduction. Australian band The Boys Next Door (Nick Cave's old band) referenced this intro, I think, on the opening song of their debut album "Door door"...that song being "The night watchmen". The Boys Next Door are described as a 'post-punk' band. Has a catchy, laddish chorus which is very sing-a-long-able to. Cook's drumming is interesting here...sort of sounds like he is using bongos or something. On this song, or perhaps on other versions, Rotten revels on the second syllable of "vacant", making it sound like a one syllable word I really couldn't get away with typing in on this site!

E.M.I. - whereas The Saints started out, literally, as a do it yourself operation, The Sex Pistols held out to get signed for a lot of money from a big recording company. How did that work out for them? Listen to this song. They signed up with the company the song takes its title from. This track is more than just an attack on E.M.I. You do get some insight into what transpired for the brief time that they were contracted to eachother. As for the song, well, it has a bit of a foot-stomping riff to it, and the guitar solo is, once again, 1950s in style. Once again, the guitars have a sort of Led Zeppelin, heavy and metallic quality to them. There is also a little, cute keyboard melody in this song. The outro has Rotten blowing a raspberry. Maybe AC/DC's Bon Scott was inspired to end their album "Highway to Hell" in a similar vein to this album closer for The Sex Pistols? The lyrics to "E.M.I" features the phrase "The crusher", I think. There is a song by that name which is about a wrestler, called "The Crusher"...probably not about him...not sure...maybe I misheard Rotten.

In conclusion: I think that whilst this album has two of the greatest songs of all time (let along punk songs), there are other punk debut albums which stack up better, as an album experience. No debut punk album I've heard (or proto-punk album) has any songs remotely as good as the best on this album. All of the punk albums I've heard up until now have preceded the release of this Pistols album. Of the punk debut albums I've heard, I think that The Saints "(I'm) Stranded" is by far the most seminal.

Recommendations:

The great rock'n'roll swindle - contains other good songs by the band and a nice little fairy story from the band's manager, Malcolm McLaren, to open the album. Quirky.

The Saints - (I'm) Stranded. Seminal punk album which seems to me to anticipate later movements in music, like speed and thrash, at times.

Radio Birdman - Radios appear. Another Australian band, contemporaneous with The Saints. Some songs have an "Oi" punk vibe to them, and they also have some nice, jazzy sounding non-punk songs on that album too.

The Damned - Damned, damned, damned. The first British punk album. Pub rock flavoured punk music.

Ramones - Ramones. The first officially recognised punk album. Pity the guitars are so low in the mix. On occasion, they display a lovely pop sensibility, which no doubt Rotten would not have abided...perhaps. The Sex Pistols members did hang out with the Ramones when they toured the UK. Joey Ramone takes credit for ALL punk which followed in their wake in the alternative history of heavy metal edition of Classic Rock magazine which came out this year. That is a very big stretch...might be slightly true for UK punk, but The Saints weren't a part of that scene and their debut album would have been as it, even if the Ramones had never come to be.

Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. Another band, like Radio Birdman, which get labelled as "proto-punk" even though I think they have the punk sound to them to justify being called 'punk'.』

(You'll Always Find Us Out to Lunch)
『As the UK prepared to celebrate the Queen's silver jubilee in 1977, youth unemployment was high, a sanitation strike left garbage piling up in the streets of London. What were the kids supposed to do? Spend their entire dole money to see some washed up rock band perform a tired old stadium show? I think not. You might argue about when, where and how punk rock began, but for many British kids it began right here. NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS encapsulated the fed-up, rebellious, gob-in-your-face mood of the times with a collection of songs intended to antagonize parents, diss the Royal Family and promote anarchy in the UK (unless you were a "lazy sod" who thought that would be too much effort). With a message that still resonates today, The Pistols summed up the DIY aesthetic of punk rock in a world where the established pillars of society were collapsing all around. "The problem is you. What you gonna do?"』

(From the perspective of a progressive rock fan)
『I love progressive rock. I listen to Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Emerson Lake&Palmer, Frank Zappa, the list goes on and on. All of these bands were absolutely hated by the punk rock movement of the late 70's. Punk rock was the statement of hatred for the pretentious progressive rock bands, and punk rock managed to mostly kill off progressive rock within a few years.
With all of this history, I have held a dislike of punk rock. But after hearing Anarchy in the U.K., I decided I would give this album a try, though.
The album is good. It gives you a glimpse into the punk scene of England back in the late 70's. I know that punk rock in general is known for live performances than studio work, but the album fairs quite well in the studio. The best songs from the album are Holidays in the Sun, Anarchy in the U.K., and God Save the Queen. Seventeen and Submission are good, and the rest of the album is... basic (by basic, I mean that most of these songs seem to follow the same formula).

A quick warning, if you are slightly squeamish, do not listen to Bodies. Sid Vicious plays on it. I'm kidding, kidding. But really, it's a song about abortions, and its lyrics are quite grotesque.』

(Death "of" pop, or Death TO Pop?)
『In a way, this was true roots rock, in that it hauled rock music up out of the sludge it was mired in, and put it back in the garage where it began, and where it thrived.

As rock degenerated into pop, it became clearer and clearer that it was dead and didn't know it.

These guys knew it and finished it off, thank god. Applying the well-known zombie-killing technique of "kill the brain, kill the ghoul," they brought rock back to life by emphasizing how it felt to rock, what it had originally meant to rock.

The result? I'll offer just one little peek into what this album eventually brought us to. Ever heard of an album called "My Aim Is True?"

Death of pop, indeed.

This album killed the dead music and brought the real stuff back to life.

"Rock is dead; long live rock!"』

(Never Mind the Overreaction)
『This album earns at least three stars only for its historical significance. Yes, it was a groundbreaking milestone, and for that, one must give it its due. It broke ground in much the same way "All In The Family" broke ground in television by being the first show in which four-letter words were allowed to be used. The Sex Pistols were the first to lift the rock and make us all look at the worms underneath. Yes, they had a lot of energy, but negative energy is not necessarily entertaining just because it is energetic. All of the songs sound alike; melody and harmony are conspicuously absent; and the only redeeming factor is the Vicious, Rotten attitude. If that's your cup of tea, you won't want to listen to any sermons about the death of popular culture that was ushered in with the likes of this record in the late seventies. (Does art influence society or merely reflect it?) Because the record was so influential, it does "deserve" respect as an anomaly that was at the forefront of a new movement. But that does not make it any fun, or even listenable. It stands today only as a milestone - or, rather a tombstone. Here lies the death of pop rock.』

(Not As Good as the Critics Say)
『There are a few distinctively American artists -- Norman Mailer comes immediately to mind. And then there are many more pale imitators of European art that happen to be American, and are rewarded because of American chauvinism. Edward Albee falls into the latter camp. There's something powerful and authentic when Samuel Beckett and Albert Camus write about the meaningless and absurdity of the human condition but when Edward Albee writes there's something wildly immature and annoying.

Albee's first work "Zoo Story" which is a childish imitation of "Waiting for Godot" can be forgiven as exactly that: a childish imitation. But what are Albee's excuses for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?"

George (Richard Burton) is a middle-aged small-town college history professor who is married to the college president's daughter Martha (Elizabeth Taylor). Once full of promise and vitality George now resorts to alcohol and bitter violent fights with Martha to pass the time. One night they invite over a couple who are a younger, much more vibrant version of themselves -- and the two take this as an opportunity to reflect on the life they cursed themselves with.

Because Edward Albee is considered a genius and because "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" is considered one of the greatest films of all time I searched for meaning and substance in the film, and after forty minutes I became desperately bored, began fast forwarding, and then eventually just gave up. There were moments when I did feel that the film was trying to say something but decided it wasn't true because the film didn't really develop that theme and that theme was really juvenile anyway -- I mean, would a serious playwright use for his masterwork the theme that marrying for money and position will only make you miserable?

In the end I could only conclude that this film is merely a visual projection of all the anxieties and phobias, self-loathing and narcissims -- in short, the collected mental masturbation -- of a playwright who just happens be homosexual and childish and depressed. The articulate protagonist is a stand-in for the playwright, someone so witty and luminous yet underappreciated by the world and trapped in an impossible situation with a hysterical wife. The wife Martha represents either the playwright's mother or just a generic impression of all women: violent and insane, selfish and self-indulgent, a whore and a witch.

Albee then takes this disjointed and incoherent worldview, and slaps on a flimsy and hackneyed plot, and puts it on stage -- and everyone calls it art and genius. So why do you hate yourself and the world so much, Mr. Albee, when life is this easy and wonderful?

To be fair this play was written almost half a century ago when psychology wasn't so developed. Back then they did not understand what was "co-dependency" and "bipoloar depression" and "borderline personality disorder" and writers could only re-create these things on paper from the rough sketches of their personal lives. But so what? Great writers are great because they are overly attuned into the peculiar nuances of the human condition: Shakespeare did not have to major in psychology to create the convincing and powerful psychological portraits of Hamlet and MacBeth and King Lear and Othello.

It is perhaps all too common to fear and to misunderstand something, and then quickly dismiss it as "crazy" or worse "genius." "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" is in the lucky position to find itself labelled as "genius" by a society that fears and misunderstands it more than it appreciates and understands it.』

(These People Pleasantly Wear You Down With Customer Service.)
『I had a small cosmetic problem with the DVD case I received with my movie. I put the concern out there to the company and before I could predict whether it would matter to them, they RESPONDED. And most agreeably, I might add - all tilted toward the satisfaction of the customer. I actually felt someone was singularly devoting their time and attention to me, not from a customer relations script but from a real sense of trying to understand and remedy my problem. I run a small business myself, and one thing I impress upon my employess is this - mishaps in production and service explain the customer's problem, they do not justify it. That being said, the customer is deserving of something more and above an explanation; they now deserve satisfaction beyond the purchased item. Well, that is exactly what I received. Kudos to the folks at HELVIC55.』

("Stunt casting" in this boundary-breaking film works, and in fact helps create a masterpiece)
『I was rather surprised on actually looking up the information to find out that I'd only seen, as far as I can be sure, 5 films starring Elizabeth Taylor and 4 starring her husband at the time this one was made, Richard Burton. That and not having a really clear impression of director Mike Nichols' work, nor having read the Edward Albee play on which the film is based or really knowing much about it besides the typical, often derisive comment that it's "2 hours of people screaming at each other", made me able to watch this film from a position of relative ignorance, which I think made some difference. What little I had seen with Taylor was mostly forgotten, and what I did remember wasn't so positive - she had struck me as a lightweight with a kind of breathless and vapid air about her; and Burton I remembered also from some of his lesser work and action movies that didn't take a lot of chops. So I was altogether unprepared...

A full moon, clouds moving over it, in sharp black and white. Dissolve to a pan from treetops down to a distant building, in the dark, in the fall with the leaves blowing, a college campus perhaps, a man and a woman slowly walking towards the camera, then passing behind a tree, another dissolve to an overhead shot, they look like dolls...George (Burton) an Associate Professor of History at an unnamed small college, and Martha (Taylor) his wife, both in their late 40s or so, walking home after an event. Entering their old two-story house, Martha exclaims, "What a dump" in an exaggerated tone and then proceeds to badger George to tell her what film it's from. They banter back and forth, getting progressively more testy; they go upstairs, lie on the bed, and Martha starts singing "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" (to the tune of "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush") as they start acting more tenderly; it was all a game, perhaps?

Then Martha informs George that she's invited a younger couple over; they were at a faculty party it seems, and Martha had an eye on the young man (George Segal, his character never named) who with his young wife Honey (Sandy Dennis) shows up a few moments later, as both George and Martha are getting more liquored up - and more bitchy with each other. The young couple comes in, more drinks are poured, the fighting continues, the dialogue intensifies, then dies, then re-ignites, like a fugue, like the wonderful Alex North score which at all times reminds us of the tenderness lying underneath the hostility in a marriage that clearly did not turn out the way either party wanted it to - but is nonetheless the defining, central, impossible-to-give-up element in both lives. So it continues for two hours, as Martha seduces the young man; as both Martha and George try to outdo each other in ferocity and cruelty, as physical violence seems just around the corner, and a kiss and tears around the next. And always there is wit, and always there is the drama of wondering how, and if, the younger couple will seek to escape this dark path that lies as an example in front of them; and always there is more and more liquor.

There's never a dull moment, never even a merely OK moment in this spectacularly compelling, funny, and heartwrending piece of work. Haskell Wexler's laserlike sharp, high-contrast photography conveys the shadowy world of noir or crime drama, the underbelly of this tormented couple's lives, but also a fantastic never-never land - a swing out back, the roadhouse down the way, a strange beauty of nightly creation and destruction as George and Martha over and over approach and ultimately reject any kind of lasting understanding of each other, circling like the mobile camera that Nichols directs like a master on only his first film. North's score I've mentioned, which evokes Bach and Handel, the classical world of George's bookish life, gentle harp and guitar and other strings for the most part, a calmness in the midst of the crazy inner worlds in front of us.

But it is the actors who are the reason we're watching this, after all, and none of them disappoint. Sandy Dennis and George Segal, at the very beginnings of their careers, hold their own as the alternately frightened and excited young couple, he ambivalent about a marriage out of necessity and a wealthy father-in-law, she a secret heavy drinker and apparently full of sickness-inducing guilt, perhaps out of the marriage, perhaps out of other mysterious reasons. Taylor and Burton, though, are the reasons you're probably watching the film, and they both so far transcend what I knew of them or thought they could do that it was like watching them for the first time. Taylor was only 33 - at least 15 years too young - when shooting started, and put on 30 pounds, lowered her voice and seemed to have ripped all sweetness out of her manner - except for those rare moments when both Liz, and the Martha as she must have been, are allowed to emerge. She seems every bit the disillusioned romantic, a last vestige of the pre-feminist era who knows that there is more to life than her husband, but has never found it and doesn't even really know where to look. She's ferocious, catty, and always angling because she always knows that she's still got it. Her slight upper-crust accent seems to fade in and out in tune with the role she's playing at that moment - scorned wife, loving wife, angry and profane drunk, would-be-intellectual who can't keep up with her husband, snobby daughter of the college president - and much more. Burton is, if anything, even more impressive, though perhaps I'm giving him that mostly for having a slightly larger role, and for being in essence the tragic hero - the man who could never be the great scholar that he wanted to be, the political mover in the school that his wife and father-and-law expected, the lover that she wanted, the father...but that would spoil it.

Albee's best-known work beside the 1962 play on which this was based may be his slightly earlier absurdist "Zoo Story", which is on the surface closer to fantasy than VIRGINIA WOOLF; but this film (and I assume the play) skirts the borders of reality throughout it's length, with at least a couple of moments (stories, really) which are never particularly explained and left very much up to us to decipher or interpret. Is the "Bergin" story that he tells the young man and that gets repeated later, more drunkenly, more angrily, George's real memory of what a schoolmate went through? Is it George's own experience? Is it that of the son", apparently made up, that George and Martha could never have? Is it entirely something from his own imagination, but played out with Martha endlessly in different versions, to different couples and with variations on other games, on previous nights, year after year?

All good things, all good movies, all bad nights and fantastic nights and hard dark nights of the soul must come to the end, and so does VIRGINIA WOOLF die with a whimper, softly, gently, tenderly....desperately.

DVD FEATURES/QUALITY - the transfer on this issue is excellent, soundwise and especially picturewise, beautifully sharp and deep. Two commentary tracks; I've only listened to about half of the track with director Nichols and accolyte Steven Soderbergh but it's very good; the other features cinematographer Wexler. Both featurettes on the making of/impact of the film on the second disc are solid; the Taylor TV bio isn't anything special but isn't bad. Absolutely one of my favorite DVDs.』

(not a good movie)
『I really don't understand what so many people love about this film. It's a death march. Unrelenting in its tedium. For the life of me, I can't understand why the young couple doesn't just go home! The film drags on the way the night in the film drags on and there's nothing particularly interesting about the characters or the story.』
『A word of advice: If George (Richard Burton) and Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) ever ask you over for late-night cocktails--pass. On the other hand, if you have the opportunity to see Mike Nichols's scorching film version of Edward Albee's sensational play, don't miss it! Elegantly photographed in crisp black and white by the great Haskell Wexler, the play has been "opened up" for the screen by director Nichols (The Graduate,Primary Colors) and producer-writer Ernest Lehman (North by Northwest) without diluting its concentrated, claustrophobic power. Taylor has never been better or brasher as Martha, letting loose with all the fury of a drunken, frustrated academic's wife on one crazyWalpurgisnachtbender. Burton plays her husband, George, the ineffectual history prof married to the college president's daughter. And George Segal and Sandy Dennis are young, callow Nick and Honey, who have no idea what sort of mind-warping psychological games they're being drawn into. Among the most successful theatrical adaptations (artistically and popularly) ever brought to the screen. The entire principal cast was nominated for Oscars--and Taylor, Dennis, and cinematographer Wexler won.--Jim Emerson
『Mike Nichols' first directorial effort represents a milestone in psychological realism and "foul" language in American cinema. George and Martha as played superbly and without vanity by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are as far from the bourgeois 1950s perfect married couple as you can get alternatively badgering berating abusing and loving each other both alone and accompanied by the naive young married couple that have come over for a nightcap (portrayed brilliantly by George Segal and Sandy Dennis). The fun and games in which George and Martha involve Nick and Honey are a lacerating look at the older couple's existence where the emotional brutalizing fill an unspeakable void at their center and a troubling preview of what the younger couple's life could become. Edward Albee's dramatic vision combines the banal the vulgar and the poetic and Ernest Lehman's adapted screenplay is amazingly faithful to the structure of Albee's play. The acting is uniformly excellent and Taylor and Burton were never better together. A harrowing movie experience but very worthwhile and finally unforgettable.System Requirements:Run Time: 131 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/CLASSIC Rating: NR UPC: 012569821095 Manufacturer No: 82109』

(Fun Lovin Movie)
『This CD is a lot of fun to watch and the title song is delightful.』

(fluffy 50's comedy with Frankie and Debbie)
『Here's Frankie at the apex of his swingin' Fifties movie fame in THE TENDER TRAP (1955), a fun romantic comedy which pairs him with darling Debbie Reynolds and also boasts the strong comedic support of David Wayne and Celeste Holm.

New York talent agent Charlie Reader (Frank Sinatra) lives a charmed life. His bachelor pad is serviced by an endless parade of beautiful girls (including Carolyn Jones, Lola Albright and Jarma Lewis) ready to cater to his every whim. What more could a man want? Certainly not marriage! But his latest discovery, stage singer Julie Gillis (Debbie Reynolds) couldn't care less about her career if a wedding's not on the immediate horizon. Whether he likes it or not, Charlie's about to be caught in the 'tender trap'...

While Sinatra and Reynolds were the top-billed stars of THE TENDER TRAP, the film is mercilessly stolen by David Wayne and Celeste Holm's snappy supporting performances. Indeed, Holm made such an impression that she and Sinatra were reunited the following year in "High Society". Debbie Reynolds' character of Julie might rankle female viewers in the modern age, but she gives a delightful performance--given the limitations of the script. Frankie and David have some great scenes together and the whole affair breezes along in splendid fashion. A fun title.

The DVD includes a featurette focusing on Sinatra's attempt to reinvent his movie persona in the 1950s, plus the trailer. Available separately or as part of the Frank Sinatra: The Golden Years DVD collection boxset (which also includes "Some Came Running", "The Man With the Golden Arm", "None But the Brave" and "Marriage on the Rocks").』

(I recognise this plot)
『This is a good movie. I do believe the plot is currently being used as the back story for the Charlie Sheen sitcom 'Two and a Half Men'. good stuff.!』

(The Tender Trap)
『I enjoy all the romantic comedies of the 60s&70s. In this Debbie Reynolds is a young girl perusing a Broadway career just until she gets married. She had mapped out her entire life, just doesn't know who the husband will be. Frank Sinatra's ego as a ladies man is hurt when Debbie refuses to got out to dinner because she doesn't want to waste her time on someone that would not be a husband candidate. Funny, entertaining, light hearted comedy I will enjoy again and again.』

(Fun little film!)
『I thoroughly enjoyed this sugary piece of 1950s nostalgia. While it's certainly not one of Sinatra's strongest pictures from the period (I'd give that nod to the likes of Some Came Running, etc.), it's a nice showcase of Sinatra in his prime during his absolutely fantastic Capitol period. The boyish charm of the 1940s had mellowed, and Sinatra was looser, more comfortable in his own skin, and positively oozing a rakish charm. Oh he could be nice and respectable, but there was more of an edge to the man during this phase of his career that can be seen even in a lightweight vehicle such as this. The moment when Sinatra's character, Charlie, realizes that without Julie his swingin' single life amounts to absolutely nothing actually comes off rather poignantly. Debbie Reynolds plays Julie with aplomb - at this stage in Reynolds' career I don't think anyone could play an ingenue with such fierce tenacity better. The supporting actors are real gems. David Wayne plays Charlie's married best friend Joe, who after eleven years of marriage envies Charlie's carefree life - at first (in fact his character reminds me just a bit of the Tom Ewell character in The Seven Year Itch). The fabulous Celeste Holm plays (one of) Charlie's long-suffering girlfriends, Sylvia. Holm effortlessly dances between comic relief and bittersweet world-weariness - but her character gets a sweet payoff in the end! The movie's biggest drawback is it's "stagey" feel. Based on a play, the film feels like you're basically watching a stage version, with the main set being Charlie's sprawling, fabulously retro apartment. One is definitely an observer and not as fully "immersed" in the world of the film as you could be if it was filmed differently. However, I think some of the timelessness of the relationship humor outweighs the staging of the film. Also, the title song gets about beaten to death, but thankfully it's endured as a classic and risen about the unnecessary multiple versions here. As far as the DVD goes, the picture quality is crisp&clear and the colors are vibrant, and unlike most of the other DVDs in the Frank Sinatra Collection, this one includes a "Frank in the Fifties" featurette - it's about fifteen minutes or so in length, but it's a nice overview of this phase of Sinatra's career. It's a fun little film and an interesting document of its time.』
『Charlie Reader is a successful theater agent. He is also successful with young ladies. One day he is visited by his old friend Joe married with three children. Joe falls in love with Charlie's girl Sylvia while Charlie spends his time with young actress Julie.Running Time: 111 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY/CLASSICS UPC: 012569647473 Manufacturer No: 1000015050』
『It's the total ring-a-ding lifestyle: hep Manhattan pad, fishbowl-sized martini pitcher, and a long list of female companions. Then swinging bachelor Frank Sinatra has his style cramped by a chaste and very organized young Debbie Reynolds. Her detailed blueprint for courtship and marriage formsThe Tender Trap's supposedly comic premise, although the results are fairly tepid. Even those expert supporting players David Wayne and Celeste Holm, as Frank's best buddy and most loyal girlfriend, don't have their usual zing. The stage origins of the material are all too evident, with much of the action set in Sinatra's enormous apartment (which is worth a look for future archivists trying to re-create an era). There's the Oscar®-nominated title song, of course, which is still a dandy--and you'll hear it about five times, including a pre-credits sequence with Sinatra (apparently as himself, not his character) crooning to the camera.--Robert Horton

(Great movie)
『Movie is very nice and it is really an "evergreen". The additional contents are produced with high quality, giving a new view of the film, actors and locations.
It is a good way to make happy all the Sabrina in the world.

At last, a "must have".』

(Why Bogie?)
『One major reason Billy Wilder is now considered one of film's major directors is his brilliant casting. For Sabrina, he wanted Cary Grant for the role that eventually went to Humphrey Bogart. Big mistake. Bogie's fatal miscasting eclipses this film from being outstanding although it's fun watching Audrey Hepburn and gorgeous William Holden. Hepburn later recalled that Bogart was sullen and aloof during the filming and it carries over into his performance Ah, to think of what Cary Grant could have done.』

(Upon Mature Reconsideration....)
『This is one of these movies that has always been alluded to breathlessly, as the epitome of a certain kind of 50's romance, especially after the remake! Why, oh why, rose the piteous cry, why did Hollywood have to remake a movie so perfect, and with any actress but a perfect reincarnation of Audrey Hepburn at the height of her appeal in the title role?
I had never actually seen the original version of Sabrina all the way through and looked forward very much to watching it - and yes, it was a rather charming movie, and yes, indeed, that was rightfully one of Audrey Hepburn's best playing-of-herself-movies, but there were some elements of the plot which did not go over in quite the same lighthearted and charmingly romantic manner in 2008 than they did in 1958. Sabrina, the daughter of a wealthy Long Island family's chauffeur with an unrequited passion for the playboy son of the younger son of the Larrabee family, came off as something of a stalker in the early scenes. Her suicidal gesture, closing the garage doors and starting up all the automobiles, until rescued by the sober older Larrabee brother, played by Humphrey Bogart... that was likewise rather unsettling. And not just because Humphrey Bogart, dour and lugubrious, and about the last actor on earth that comes to mind when you think light, fluffy romantic comedy was cast as the other half of the romantic duo. It was as if he had wandered in from another movie entirely. What would `Sabrina' have been like, if William Holden had played the older brother, and someone a little closer to Audrey Hepburn's apparent age had been cast as the scapegrace younger brother? Ah, well. The rest of the casting is flawless, an expert mix of established supporting actors, especially Walter Hampton as the Larrabee paterfamilias, smoking a cigar about the size of a baseball bat.

The most interesting of the extra features focuses on the supporting cast, some of whom were more famous afterward in long-running TV series (Nancy Culp and Ellen Corby) or had been famous before, on stage or in silent movies (John Williams and Francis X Bushman). Another feature is about the modern-day Long Island town which provided authentic locations, some of which still remain basically unchanged (the railway station) and some stately mansions (alas, long gone).

(when younger brother doesn't work out, older brother is ok too)
『[warning: movie spoiler ahead...] this movie is a bit weird... if Sabrina didn't marry the younger brother, the elder brother is fine too... he is rich and have social status too. She found that the love between her and the younger brother didn't work out, so she needs no time to recover but can immdiately fall in love with the older brother? To me it seems a bit weird.』

(Sabrina the Centennial Collection)
『I enjoyed seeing the original version of 'Sabrina'. I realized what a classic it truly is and how little the recent Harrison Ford version had changed from this one. If you only seen the Harrison Ford 'Sabrina', pop some pop-corn and take the time and see this one. You'll enjoy it.』
『Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 11/11/2008 Run time: 112 minutes Rating: Nr』
『Audrey Hepburn is the delightful young Sabrina, the daughter of a chauffeur who is hopelessly in love with David Larrabee (William Holden), the playboy younger son in the rich Long Island household her father works for. In order to help her forget her woes, Sabrina is shipped off to cooking school in Paris. While there, she befriends a baron who provides a bit of culture--and the encouragement to snip off her childlike ponytail. Upon her return to New York, Sabrina is transformed into a sophisticated woman, and David is entranced by her. However, his older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart) has arranged David's marriage to Elizabeth Tyson in order to seal a business merger and thus must steer David away from Sabrina. To do this, Linus takes on the task of wooing her for himself. Full of great dialogue ("A woman happy in love, she burns the soufflé; a woman unhappy in love, she forgets to turn on the oven") and wonderful performances, this film is a romantic masterpiece. Also enjoyable is the 1995 remake, starring Julia Ormond and Harrison Ford.--Jenny Brown

『i would recommend this it is easy to use and has a good release valve the 400$ one insurance got me the release broke in 4 hours of having it i would recommend this』

(Ya, its a penis pump)
『I'll give it a four. Nothing fancy. Can hold up to a 9 inch piece so I can't fit all the way in. The hand pump is easy to work and pumps it up fast but I'd like it longer and wider. Just too small for me. When you get it it has that black rubber piece on it. Guess it is for small guys. I didn't know it came off so I was trying to use that. No way I'd fit through that and it was painful. I finally pulled it off and things got better. Just be sure to use lube so you can slide when the pump grows your wang.』

(Not bad)
『I'm positive it can't be beat for the price you pay. It does the job when your cock needs to be sucked. You might have to snip off a portion of the membrane to get your penis to enter more comfortably and I found that if you spray the rubber membrane with WD-40, or some lubricant, your penis slides through as though you were entering a pussy. It's great and the price is right!』
『Maximum results with minimal effort! Brand new pump handle has an easy to use pistol grip that creates a super strong vacuum with just a few quick pulls. High quality 9-/22.86 cm clear cylinder with flanged base and precise result measurements in inches and cm, removable snug latex sleeve, flexible non-crimping hose, and a new push button safety release valve. 『...if WHITE weren't the color I received! That color really should be discontinued, it's kinda ugly. But, fast shipping and still a fun product.』

(happy)
『my first- I am happy I chose this one. It's not expensive and I like that you can change the speed. It works nicely... I just wish you got a choice in color because I can't say white is all that cute... but then again, I guess it doesn't make much difference ;)
I used it twice today already.』

『The 5 Inch Slim Vibe is waterproof and has adjustable speeds. Slim, smooth and comfortable, this multi-speed vibrator will fly you off into a world of bliss! Great for use in the shower or Jacuzzi, just two AA batteries provide all the power you need for an amazing experience. Comes in 1 of the colors shown. Price is per vibrator.』

(Very pleasing.)
『The bumps are rather large at first but once it gets going, it feels really great. The twist-cap vibration setting is very good. I use for [...] all the time. Great for male or female. Very stress-relieving. Coming home from a hard days of work to this guy is great. Very good in bed, shower or bath!』

(Fantastic!)
『I bought this product as a gift for my boyfriend, and he uses it at least four times a week! I love to wach him use it and It's brought the both of us immense pleasure!』

(Okay...)
『But only just okay. It's too thin, and the plastic is way too hard. Climaxes are attainable, but always of a shallow variety. I'd look elsewhere.』

(Too thin, too hard)
『Girlfriend said it wasn't even that good for external use either, she's making me order something else.』

(great starter for adolescents)
『My 12 year old does not like to read. I gave him this book to prompt dialogue and he couldn't get his head out of it!
4 days latter, he was wiser and gave us an entree into discussion about growing up!
I also suggested by 14 year old daughter read it, to get the view from the other side!
A must read for all young men.
L Jones
Phoenix, AZ』

(great book for young men)
『My son is just 10 and already curious about "growing up" and all the changes that are starting. This book is an excellent resource for him. I would recommend reading it together, or before your son does, so you'll know what he'll be asking LOL』

(great for 10 year old starting puberty)
『I bought this and On your Mark Get Set Grow and What's happening down there? for my 10 year old. They were great, explaining things I didn't even think of and it helped keep the dialogue about the subject going with him. He came up with great questions. This book was nice because it had lots of quizzes so he can keep track of which phase he is in.
I think I was less ready for him to have all of this stuff. Difficult to come to terms with the fact that by 10 years of age, kids are getting exposed to plenty of stuff at school from their friends. I'd rather he be getting correct info and that it's coming from home. Good Book!!!!』

(Great book for boys)
『I highly recommend this book for parents and boys coming into the age of 11 or 12. It talks about how their bodies develop on their level.

Being a single Mom it was hard to understand some things that boys go thru and this book said it in a way I could understand and talk with my son.』

The bestselling guides for preteens and teens updated with a brand-new look.

The Madaras growing-up guides are acknowledged by parents, educators, librarians, and doctors for their unique, nonthreatening style, excellent organization, and thorough coverage of both the physical and emotional issues surrounding puberty and adolescence. And kids love them too! As one fan wrote, "Dear Lynda, I can't believe that you, a mom, knew all this stuff!"

"My Body, My Self" for Boysis filled with activities, checklists, illustrations, and plenty of room for journal jottings, plus lots of personal stories in which boys share their concerns and experiences about growing up. For ages 10 and up.

The new editions feature:
• Fresh new cover design for series
• Entirely redesigned interiors with new illustrations
• Uniform trim sizes for display
• New author introductions
• Updated resource sections and content
• 60 black-and-white drawings』

(Rollercoaster of love baby!)
『Everyone knows love is like a roller coaster with many ups and downs and sometimes you're stuck in the middle of the ride. Sounds cliché but it is reality. You meet a person that changes your life and you accept their flaws and love and appreciate every single thing they do for you. But once when your rollercoaster ride is over, it's painful and loaded with many emotions but damn, don't you think it was well worth the ride? Thisbook is filled with these kind of emotions in the notes and letters etc...

I'm not done reading all of these notes/letters yet, but I do read some of them when i'm in the mood to sit outside with a blanket under the stars and think about love...*sigh* i'm a hopeless romantic.

I recommend this book!』

(A great gift idea)
『I bought this as a gift for a friend of mine who I know enjoys reading romance novels and watching soap operas. I thought this book might be a natural fit.

It has found love letters from a wide range of sources and people. From old and young, formal and informal, provocative and mundane... It's got a little bit of everything in there I think. It's definitely for the inner voyeur in all of us.

The thing that makes it nice as a gift is that it isn't heavy reading and you don't have to devour it whole.』

(Interesting and Fun.)
『I must say that it really is fun to read other people's mail. This collection of letters is most enjoyable to read when you have that extra few minutes to just chill and enter another world. There is something for everyone; passion, atrocious grammar, the souls delight and the depths of misery. And It is all written by people who are not natural writers and must struggle for almost every word. This is what grabs you, everyone wants be loved.』

(Cool Book)
『This is a really cool book of letters. It's called Love Letters, but it includes letters that exude all of the emotions that love can bring out of us: jealousy, hatred, passion, envy, desperation. It's a great study of human emotions in love. A fun book of crazy letters.』

(He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not)
『This book of love letters shows the true beauty in love and the pain it can also carry. I could read these over and over again.』
『Fevered notes scribbled on napkins after first dates. Titillating text messages. It's-not-you-it's-me relationship-enders. InOther People’s Love Letters, Bill Shapiro has searched America’s attics, closets, and cigar boxes and found actual letters–unflinchingly honest missives full of lust, provocation, guilt, and vulnerability–written only for a lover’s eyes. Modern love, of course, is not all bliss, and in these pages you’ll find the full range of a relationship, with its whispered promises as well as its heartache. But what at first appears to be a deliciously voyeuristic peek into other people’s most passionate moments, will ultimately reawaken your own desires and tenderness…because when you read these letters, you’ll find the heartyou’re looking into is actually your own.

• "i think UR great. wanna have wine&Tequila again sometime?"

• "I can't believe you're real, and I think about you constantly in some way or the other all day. I haven't given the finger to anyone driving since I met you."

• "With you I learned how to fight cleaner, how to talk things out better, and how to make a strong loving family out of nothing. These are priceless gifts that I will carry with me the rest of my life. One more thing you did for me: you left, and I had to get through it."

• "P.S. I look forward to your letters too much to call. Also, where do you stand on chains?"』

(Vampire Kisses)
『I bought this for my daughter, she likes it but not too much into it. But still wants to buy the next series.』

(Just a point)
『This was a good book, but it is coming to a point that the series may need to end. Short read!!!』

(For the Younger Crowd)
『This book was interesting and a quick read - however it was quite teeny bopper! Perfect for the young adults looking for a vampire story without the gore!』

(Forever a better series than Twilight)
『I have been a long-time fan of the Vampire Kisses series, and there's not better words to describe how realistic and romantic it is.
I was particularly interested in the 5th book in the series; there was suspense on every page. I couldn't turn them fast enough to see what happens next! Raven's adventures are absolutely addicting!』

(My favorite in the series so far!)
『Raven is back visiting her Aunt in order to locate Alexander in Hipsterville, and she - of course - runs into many new adventures. This book is definitely my favorite in the series so far. It's so much fun, and the kisses are heating up between the couple. I can't wait to read the next one!』

There's a hot new underground club in town . . . but membership lasts an eternity.

It's summer break, and Raven knows she should stay put in Dullsville until her immortal love returns. But when she decides to go after Alexander, she can't resist a visit to her favorite Goth-spot, The Coffin Club. Sneaking inside, Raven is shocked to discover a secret door that leads to the entrance of another hidden club. There's something peculiar about this cryptic hangout—and it's too enticing for Raven to resist. Soon a dangerous battle for the club's rule erupts between Alexander's old nemesis and a mysterious new guy. Can Raven avoid the clash before her curiosity lands her in serious trouble?
