(Dangerous in the wrong hands but Useful in the right ones)
『This is an interesting book. However it's one of those books one has to be careful with, in the wrong hands this is almost a psychological manual for seduction, in the right ones its effective to understand human psychology. According to Greene, most human beings are essentialy capable of influencing others if they know how. The book is built on the fact that people are indeed bad, manipulative and decietful. However, if read with an open mind simply to see how this sort of psychology works, it is a splendid read. Hard to put down. This book actually went deeper then I initially thought it would but it underlines every manipulative element that is available to people today if they want to exercise it.』

(Word of Caution for the Chronically Emotionally Disfavored)
『I wanted to comment on the book, and I apologize to all concerned parties for being somewhat unfair, as I have not read the entire work.

Nevertheless, I need to warn on an important issue. Many people who have problems finding, sustaining and exercising their seduction power run into important psychological dilemmas. These are due to chronic loneliness, chronic fatigue, bitterness, and long-held anger, among other complicated factors.

My warning comes on these lines: If you have low self-esteem, anger issues, are used to being lonely (and this is not uncommon for the straight-A student who once held such academic glory or for the dedicated capitalist employee trying to strike it big) reading any book won't solve the problem of this lack of power.

What I mean is that we are so used to being ourselves, that it is difficult to break-off patterns. People we deal with or avoid on a daily basis are used to seeing us the way we behave ourselves. As one of the chapters well put it, they "unconsciuosly sense our (awkardness)" so to speak. I'm not saying these patterns cannot be broken but do expect years or decades before doing so.

This is one of the reasons many people who write about power in the world and in seduction, as being a part of our nature where we seek such power to meet very specific and basic needs on many levels, claim that it is by far one of the most difficult things a human being can accomplish. I'm not speaking of finding someone and sleeping with them or marrying them or staying in a relationship if that's what you want. I'm speaking of true power where you get the persons you REALLY want, you REALLY like, you REALLY relate to and in those instances where you don't get the target you get the need and the attraction of the target off your chest. That is, to gain this power of seduction is to be OK on most levels with oneself, and this becomes difficult because most people had bad childhoods inherited by parents who also had bad childhoods and so forth, and all this occured on a subconscious level.

This is just an opinion of mine and a warning of not spending your hard earned money on something you won't be reading but for entertainment. If it's entertainment you want, buy the book, but don't delude yourself into thinking this power will come easy. It will take commitment and years of self-discovery, self-knowledge, self-healing for most of us.』

Well, don't look now but you have been duped, and this bad deal affects way too many. The author's pen name should be U.B. Mesmerized because you are and he's rich from doing to you what he tells you to do to others. He found your weakness,used you for his gain, enticed you, sold you lies and put you on a path further away from the power you already possess. What a cheap trick.

The reviewer who wrote that his date saw this book in his apt. and had the sense to remove herself from, for all she knew, the clutches of unholy masked man, Monster Gameplaya of Narcissy [He walks, he talks, he crawls on his belly like a reptile], let a great girl get away. Too bad that book told her that he was probably incapable of love yet very capable of taking her, himself and society down a few pegs. She wanted to move forward on the high road. She moved on alright. Quickly. More than likely she had been down Chicanery Road to Chaos Street before or had once lost pieces of herself near the corner of Self Doubt and Confusion. Too bad he lost her.

No doubt, I pontificate. Just lets be careful what we fall for, insecure people, because this bill of goods carries some bad ju-ju. Some things sometime just aren't good at all.

『Just when I thought I had the story "figured" out, I find I am wrong. If you enjoy Stephanie Meyer (Twilight) and others of this genre read this book. I don't want to say too much about this story and give it away. However, a good review is "detailed and specific". I liked the book because bad people were not totally bad, and good people were not always good--just like real life. The author did a great job in showing why Patch and Nora reacted to each other the way they did. I also loved the emotion in the book, unconditional friendship that gets betrayed; hate that turns into love; etc. There is also forgiveness.』

So, then what do you judge it by?

The summary, while misleading, seems almost spot-on. Nora Grey is typical high school sophomore, complete with a single best friend who she slightly envies and a mother who is barely there. Wait, maybe she's not a typical high school student, but a typical supernatural book heroine: clueless, fidgety, "vulnerable" as Patch likes to remind us, and she has a dark past.

*Spoiler Alert, by the way*

When I borrowed the book from a friend, she said, "If you liked Twilight, you'll devour this." Hmm. I wonder why? Maybe because some of its elements are extremely similar, and I don't mean in a good way. First, Biology class. Where have I seen this before? And then Patch as himself. Moody, undeniably handsome, and mysterious, he attempts to fit the Edward bill. But where Edward was protective, sweet, and gentlemanly, Patch is not. In fact, Patch is downright loathsome. He makes exceedingly embarrassing innuendos, physically attacks Nora with his lips many times, and, in fact (MAJOR SPOILER) tries to actually kill her on numerous accounts. And yet she still trusts him and wants to be with him. May I ask, "Don't you think this is a slightly abusive relationship?" This was why Nora was a problem for me. She just came across as not that bright. Kind of bland. But in comparison to Bella, she's always blushing.

Actually, to me, the whole book seemed like several other fantasy tales strung together. I recognized elements from Evermore, Twilight, and another book I cannot quite place. This was the type of book that desperately wants you to fall in love with the main guy, but like in Evermore, I don't end up trusting him, or even remotely liking him. No matter how many times he saves her life.

But let's focus on some other characters besides the infamous Patch. Nora, as I said before, comes off as typical, someone you could relate to. Maybe. But as the book goes on, you don't. You find her annoying. Stupid. In fact, I found her quite remarkably idiotic. Why didn't she tell her best friend that she didn't, in fact, hit a deer? And why in the world would she let her "best friend" go out into the rain, alone, dressed like her, when Nora suspects there's evil afoot? Why did she go to Portland alone? Yes, I realize these are elements necessary to the story, but Nora didn't have to be so clueless while carrying them out.

Vee, on the other hand, I like. Most people don't. To me, she was more interesting than most of the other characters. Annoying? Yes, very much so. But she reminded me of my friends, and her relationship with Nora was very realistic, despite her selfishness. For me, Vee sky was comedic relief, something much needed with the novel's otherwise dry humor.

For the plot? Promising, but sloppy. We spend the first good half of the novel plowing through Nora's annoying assumptions--all of which are false--and her fears. And her mother is never there, conveniently, when something bad happens. Vee never fully believes her. Even the police are skeptical. So what does Nora think? She's obviously losing her mind! This wasn't fun to deal with, as the reader, because the same stuff kept happening, over and over and over again. It's an easy plot twist; if someone loses their mind, anything can happen.

So the ending... (AGAIN! SPOILERS!) There turn out to be three villains all in all, which is a little sketchy. First one you get is Dabria (aka, Ms. Greene, Nora's phsychologist), who is an angel herself, and Patch's ex-lover. (Enter "Evermore.") Anyway, you find out about her first, and then Patch himself who has tried, up to this point, to kill Nora many times, much to her utter despair, and the last is . . . What? Jules? Jules who never talks? Never said a word? This was the worst part for me, considering I figured Jules should have been a little more . . . I don't know, red flagish? Sure, he didn't talk, but come on. You can't just throw out a villain at the end of a book because he's convenient! If he had been remotely sketchy, maybe, but what tied him into his crimes didn't exactly have JULES!, written all over it. It could have been anybody, any of the angels. It could have been Patch, or Dabria . . . even Elliot seemed like a better choice.

Annoyingly, Jules just pops out of nowhere and takes the blame as the centuries-old Nephilim (that's half human/half fallen angel) who Patch has to control for two weeks out of every year. And Jules/Chauncey is just so mad that he wants to hurt Patch (and why PATCH, out of all the other fallen angels, such as Patch's friend? or the other dozens out there?). So he pops out of nowhere and tries to kill Nora, all the while explaining how bent his is on revenge (Hi, there, Dr. Drakken! Nice to see you again!) And Nora makes a stupid suicide attempt and is saved by her "guardian angel."

Another problem in the plot-line is some unresolved elements. What was the significance of Nora's dad being murdered a year prior, exactly? Just to make her on edge? To get rid of a parent figure the author would rather not deal with? I found it annoying due to the fact it was mentioned so much in the book, and then wasn't even resolved. It leaves you with a feeling like, "I thought that was supposed to be important." Also, Patch still can't "feel," which will eventually become a problem, seeing now that Jules is dead, he can't inhabit his body anymore for pleasure-like activities with Nora. Not to mention that the thought is implanted in your brain that Jules/Chauncey isn't actually dead.

In conclusion, the plot line could have been better. The characterization was fantastic, regardless of whether or not I liked them. The writing was good, very fluid and realistic. Becca Fitzpatrick definitely has a talent, it's just not honed yet. She needs to work on her plot-development skills, and personally, what types of characters she writes about. Emotions were very clear and precise. Relationships were well portrayed.

So, as you can see, I gave the book a 3 out of 5. Promising, interesting, and intriguing, but it could have been a lot better.』

(High Hopes for the Sequel)
『First, I have to voice my annoyance with all the reviews that criticize any book that has any remote similarity to TWILIGHT. Yes, this book is slightly similar in a few ways but it is a good read that stands on it's own... besides, Meyer isn't that great of a writer anyway (all you people care about is Edward Cullen.)

That said, I really enjoyed Hush, Hush on so many levels. I found the whole idea of angels in the book really intriguing and interesting. Nora's character was well developed, in my opinion, and I really liked Vee. She reminded me of some of my own friends, actually. The book keeps you reading, but it also keeps you guessing until very near the end. I found this both frustrating and enjoyable. I wanted Nora to at least piece *some* of the mystery together before the end but instead the complications just kept coming. But it did keep me surprised, interested, and I kept reading so I can't complain too much.

I also would have liked to more from Nora&Patch regarding the love&attraction. *Why* did Patch fall in love with Nora? And for all the complaining Nora does about his bad-boy side and his teasing, it's hard at times to see how she's falling for him too. But I did like both their characters and wanted them to be together, I guess I just would have bought more into it had there been more obvious romance.

The storyline with Dabria was an odd addition to the plot and didn't mesh into the rest of the storyline, she wasn't the only villain in the story but she had nothing to do with the other villains and it felt like she was brought in simply for another dramatic effect. It definitely wasn't a necessary addition.

Finally, the ending was enjoyable to read, after all the build up and mystery in the book it was nice and exciting to see it coming to an end. When Patch left Nora, however, to enter the school and try and find the villain - this didn't end up making sense to me. We never found out where he went or what he was doing while Nora was waiting and finally decided to go into the school herself. She was able to find trouble right away, but not so for Patch? There were a few other minor details that were never explained. This can really bother me with a good book. But...

For the most part this book was a very enjoyable read and I am really looking forward to the sequel. I was intrigued by the ending of Hush, Hush and can't wait to read what happens next.

『Ladies this is a nice DVD to give as a gift to your husband or boyfriend. He'll say that he doesn't need it. But, we (men) don't really know what we're doing, we're just guessing. The DVD goes over very; very basic techniques for rubbing your genitals, we (guys) always try to do some wild and fancy stuff when quite often the basics work just fine.

It's instructional but not clinical or porn (if porn bothers you). It shows a few techniques for rubbing the outer lips, a few for the clitorus, and a couple for the G-spot.

At $30 it's a little expensive ($1 a minute) but it makes a nice gift. The video quality is good as well as the sound quality. If you like your genitals rubbed rough this is not for you. It shows very gentle techniques. If nothing else it should open the lines of communication between you and your spouse/boyfriend which is the most important thing. We need to be told specifically what you like.』

『I watched a few episodes from the first series again recently, and was struck by how very dated it all seemed. The world SATC depicts is very much the pre-9/11 America of the Clinton era - buoyant, culturally liberal, over-confident and slightly intoxicated with its own economic success. The cumulative impact of 9/11, the Iraq War and a great financial crash have taken their toll and the series now seems emblematic of a quite different, altogether less vulnerable era. Even the film felt dated when it came out (although this did not stop me from enjoying it).

I have to admit that I do find SATC entertaining when I'm in the right mood, and the women are all gorgeous to look at (despite what some male detractors would have us believe). Sometimes the series just seems escapist in a light hearted and enjoyable way. But there is no doubt that it panders to and celebrates the worst stereotypes about air-headed female behaviour, and I can't help feeling slightly ambivalent about this. The women whine and cogitate endlessly about the failings of their boyfriends and their own lack of self-fulfilment, and the audience is, by implication, expected to empathise with their angst, when in fact it is blindingly obvious that all four women already possess all the ingredients of a happy, fulfilled life, if they could only let go of some of their dysfunctional attitudes and behaviour. Why a fetishistic obsession with expensive shoes and designer labels should be thought 'empowering' in a modern woman beats me. But then again I find it difficult to understand why women like this would ever feel oppressed in the first place. From any external (particularly non-US) perspective they would appear to be some of the most privileged and sheltered human beings on the planet. The gay characters in the series are also crude stereotypes. Invariably highly effeminate and employed in the fashion industry, they like nothing better than to gossip with straight women and share their deepest confidences. This is a Hollywood fantasy about how gay men behave. In reality most - well, certainly the ones I've met - are unremarkably masculine in behaviour and strongly prefer the company of other men.

SATC is perhaps best accepted for what it aims to be - harmless, escapist entertainment featuring neurotic, sexually hyper-active people you would never really want to meet in real life - Woody Allen for the 1990s but without the NY Jewish humour that kept Allen's best films so firmly anchored in real life. A manifesto for feminism or female self-empowerment it most certainly 'aint.

Veronica Fisher (Judy Garland) is the latest employee at the music shop run by Mr Oberkugen (the adorable S.Z. "Cuddles" Sakall), and right from the outset she ruffles the feathers of senior sales assistant Andrew Larkin (Van Johnson). Believing she's out to usurp his position in the store, Andrew decides to give her the cold shoulder. But unbeknowst to Andrew, Veronica is in fact his secret pen-pal. When he discovers her true identity, all manner of complications get in the way before Veronica learns the truth as well...

IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME was filmed during one of the most wretched periods in Judy Garland's personal life, yet miraculously there's not a single hint of her private pain on the screen. Essentially this film is fluff more than anything but to Lauren fans they will enjoy the thin plot and heavy use of sex scenes to tell her story.』

『Clement Virgo's Lie With Me is a very unconventional love story. There are moments in our life that lead us into new territory. What starts out as a casual encounter can turn into something deeper and more powerful.

Leila (Lauren Lee Smith) is a young woman living alone. One night she crashes a party and flirts with David (Eric Balfour). In all respects the relationship should have ended there as he was with his girlfriend Victoria (Polly Shannon) but it doesnt. What happens over the course of that summer is the story that makes up Lie With Me. The central question to be asked is when do emotions come into an affair that is purely sexual. When does the real world intrude on our conception of what love is. The performances in the film are groundbreaking for both of the young stars. The erotic nature of the film may put some viewers off (or turn them on) depending on their perceptions coming into the film. Given a chance the story the film tells is quite real this is not the made up love story that we are used to. It's gritty and dirty like life itself. Things do not always go the way that we plan for them to go.

(Underwhelming)
『I guess the big lessons here are A) Sex is easy, B) Love is hard, and C) Ms. Smith's costumer should be fired. Lesson A should be obvious to anyone who's learned to grope themselves. Leila clearly fits into that category, as she so ably and repeatedly demonstrates. Lesson B should also be obvious to anyone who ever applied the word "love" to anyone but Mommy. Lesson C comes from the fact that curvier figures and sleeker ones can each look good, just not in the same clothes. Ms. Smith has a lovely, slender bust, but just about all of her outfits were tailored for DD or higher. Those collpased bodices, crumpled in on themselves and sulking for lack of the filling they expected, did nothing to set off her kind of natural charm. In fact, she would have looked better with nothing at all - and did so, quite frequently.

Plot (the thing that ties the steamy scenes together) centers on the fact that strong emotional relationships have to be learned, and the trial and error learning that can be painful. The loveless relationship between Leila's parents didn't give her much to work with initially, so there's plenty of error once she does head in that direction. But, once she starts looking at men above the waist, she can't look back. Unfortunately, the frustrated need for something more than physical contact and the incompetence at getting it comes out in tantrums.

I have no problem with pretty people getting physical, quite the opposite. I just didn't care for the junior-high emotional level housed in very adult bodies.

『I really love "Love in the Afternoon"! I had a big kick out of it and I don't understand why some people dislike it.

To me, the film is a masterpiece. It succeeds in so many levels like no other romantic comedy. The story is wonderfully acted and told. Intelligent script explores human soul layer after layer- all the silly things we do when we are in love and all the illogical explanations which we make to justify our madness, it is all there. The underlying dramatic theme,that love often breaks our hearts is seasoned with the right dose of humor to provide a pleasant comic relief. The movie is beautifully shot and the music score is to die for. The two leads, Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn have tremendous on-screen chemistry and make a fantastic,fun to watch on-screen couple. The supporting cast and "The Gypsies" are pretty amazing too.

Gary Cooper is Frank Flannagan, a handsome American, very wealthy, mature and confirmed bachelor. He likes women, champagne, everything luxurious and lives live to the full. He never gets serious about a relationship. His philosophy is "Don't get attached. People should always behave as though they were between planes". A fateful meeting with beautiful, young French Ariane changes his attitude. She saves his life and they spend together his last afternoon in Paris. He leaves for America and forgets her. She doesn't forget him, she is deeply in love. A year later they meet again and this time he falls for her, but she plays mysterious and elusive, and drives him crazy. Eventually they come together by the end of the film -a beautiful, romantic and memorable end!

I really enjoyed the movie and laughed out loud at the many funny scenes. There is one particular scene, where Flannagan, totally obsessed with Ariane and jealous of "her past" falls into pieces. He drinks the whole night and listens to Ariane's voice message in which she tells him of her "itemized list of lovers". The Gypsies play his favorite music. There are trolleys loaded with alcohol literally "flying" forward&backward between Flannagan and the band, while his playing Ariane's message zillion times forward and backward, and the music starts and stops in the same manner. Hilarious!

Gary Cooper's ability to maintain delicate balance between the dramatic and the funny side of the situation is unsurpassable! His age did not bother me the slightest. On the contrary, I thought, at 56 he is still a great actor and strikingly handsome man. His body is lean and well toned , he is wonderful to look at and worthy of love. And as a matter of fact the age difference between Flannagan and Ariane is a crucial point in the story.

Gorgeous, classy and talented Audrey Hepburn is delightful to watch. I will never forget her in the final scene. She makes it so moving! Gary Cooper is amazing too. Actually, amazing is understatement. Flannagan is forced to make the toughest decision in his life and he must make it fast, now or never! Cooper has no lines, only a few words for the last five minutes screen time, but his tormented facial expression says it all. I felt his desperation and pain as though, I was on that departing train deciding "to be or not to be". The final could have easily become too syrupy but it isn't. There is no sugar-coated dialog and no excessive weeping, and it works magnificently.

The message I got from the film is that true love has no age and conquers all. If you are among the few lucky ones who have found their match, surrender completely and enjoy your "life sentence"!

I could keep on writing and marvel about the film but my review is long enough as it is. I hope, I gave you some idea what to expect and I am leaving you now to make your mind up. If you decide to go ahead and see "Love in the Afternoon" the chances are you will enjoy two very nice and memorable hours. Seriously, they don't make'em like that anymore!

『Audrey Hepburn (who was an excellent actor and an even better human being) MADE HER FILM CAREER by playing the sweet young thing opposite the much older man. Seriously, people, how can you try, sentence and condemn this film because "Gary Cooper is too old for her," but talk about how much you love films like Roman Holiday, My Fair Lady, Charade, or even lesser movies like Sabrina or War and Peace?

Humphrey Bogart: 30 years older.
Gary Cooper: 27 years older.
Henry Fonda: 24 years older.
Burt Lancaster: 16 years older.
Cary Grant: 25 years older.
Rex Harrison: 21 years older.
Gregory Peck: 13 years older (but when she was only 25 and he was pushing 40).

If you can relook at the film for what it is, you find one of Billy Wilder's good, but hardly great pictures.

Many of the qualities that make Wilder one of the greats--a strong central cast, well-oiled comedic timing and engaging dramatic pacing--are present and accounted for. Cooper plays an excellent smirking, older lothario (hardly an uncommon trope it the annals of American film, so get over it) in a daring, but well-acted departure from the Will Kane/Longfellow Deeds mold. Maurice Chevalier tones down the croaking Frenchman routine to play a subtle and endearing character, despite his obnoxious occupation. And Audrey Hepburn delivers a remarkably self-controlled performance in what was doubtless a difficult role to assume.

The gypsy band and the comedy of errors are vintage Wilder. Ditto for the typically 'Wilderian' pace, which never lags, and never goes too long without a joke. All of Wilder's story-telling signatures are there, especially his career-long preoccupation with the qualities that make up 'human decency,' and, despite his generally cynical take on modern American life (at home and abroad), his aptitude for teasing out a satisfying romantic ending.

A movie is not always the sum of its parts; a great cast and a strong script can make for a disastrous picture if not assembled properly. Wilder, even when working with inferior material (I'm thinking especially of some of HIS OWN weaker scripts) could never be accused of shoddy directing. And Love in the Afternoon is, above all, well-assembled.

Its script is not as daring or captivating as Double Indemnity's, nor as moving and utterly human as the Apartment's. It's on-location filming is not as impressive as is Ace in the Hole's, nor as memorable as The Long Weekend's (remember Ray Milland's agonizing pawn shop hunt?). Wilder made good use, initially, of the Place Vendôme, but otherwise he fails to make the most of what Paris has to offer.

It's solid, it leaves an impression and stays with you, but it's hardly Wilder's best work. For another director, Love in the Afternoon would be great; for Wilder, it's just good.』

『The wisdom of Amazon kept recommending this to me. Why - because I bought Two For The Road several years ago?? That purchase was based on love of that film and its timeless reflection on love/marriage. Love in the Afternoon cannot be compared in any way save for the presence of the lovely Audrey Hepburn. She shines in both films but the latter doesn't come close to being saved by her inclusion.

Gary Cooper - are we kidding? Who in the name of William Shatner (an Olivier by comparison) ever considered him an ACTOR?? His wooden, plodding recitation of lines was a hideous waste of time, energy and celluloid. I can understand a town full of people planning his demise at high noon.

『Gary Cooper has always been the perfect guy to me. I was skeptical about the somewhat coolish Audrey Hepburn playing opposite the Coop-man.
My fears were unfounded. They are able to project a definite chemistry on film. It is a sweet romance--she, as a cellist has a crush on the much older playboy. Is it strictly a sweet romance? No. There is plenty of humor in this. One of my favorite scenes is the one in which the innebriated Cooper keeps pushing the service cart back and forth, as he is in a blue funk and self-medicating to the max. It is a classic. The great scene however is the ending scene in which they have split up and she runs after the train. He comes to the doorway of the train and sweeps her onboard, sensually cementing their relationship for good. This scene rivals the beach scene in From Here to Eternity (Lancaster, Kerr) in sexiness. A great and scintillating movie. The interiors are elegant.』

『I bought this belt for a halloween costume, and it didn't even survive the first try on. The belt itself is cheap, thin nylon webbing that twists constantly. the buckle doesn't even cinch tightly, so i had to tie the nylon belt around my waste. And the clips that hold the cans in place all broke under the weight of a full beer can.

I gave this item 1 star simply because there is no option for zero stars. truly the worst item I have ever purchased on Amazon』

『Despite myself, I enjoyed this book. It is truly a tongue in cheek vampire tale.
Having viewed old movies with Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula, then watching the daytime soap opera "Dark Shadows' for a number of years, there is definitely a fascination with the subject matter.
At first, I thought it childish, but then it is meant for teens!
Venturing futher into the book, chuckles were definitely called for as Bella, our heroine, constantly gets herself into accidents and mis steps.
Bella is obviously coming of age. Searching for something to hang on to (her mother has remarried, her Dad is somewhat a lost loner) she comes to live in Forks for a spell.
Forks is pretty cloudy most of the time and cold, perfect for the unique vampire family, residing in town, identity unbeknownst to the population thereof.
Edward is greatly drawn, no pun intended, to Bella, and Bella is just ripe and ready, despite Edward's best intentions.
Not a serious book, not for everyone, but a silly, fun read for the right person.』

I first heard about Twilight from a friend of mine, who mentioned that Breaking Dawn was coming out the next day.This friend and I have similar taste in books, so I trusted her, and bought a copy of Twilight a week later. Needless to say, I was severely disappointed.
Bella Swan "selflessly" offers to move to Forks, Washington, to let her mother and Fiancee travel the world together. She hates Forks. This is highly unrealistic. How many teens you know would move to somewhere that they hate voluntarily? She settles down at Forks High School, where everyone likes her, but Bella Swan is drawn to the pale Cullen family. Edward Cullen, her lab partner acts unfriendly, because she smelt good, and he was attracted to her blood.
They eventually become friends, and he kisses her. Then,James, a tracker vampire is determined to suck her blood.

Bella Swan is a Mary Sue. She notice her beauty, but five guys are in love with her. She is nice to everyone, and they all want to be her friend. Gag. She has no personality. There is no redeeming quality about Bella Swan. She is the typical love struck "girl-next-door" with no thoughts except about Edward Cullen, or as she calls him, "Angel," or "Marble Adonis" There is no depth in their relationship, except that she is sexually attracted to him, and that he thinks that she smells good. It is shameful that girls set Bela as their role models.

Edward Cullen is a crazy, abusive, controlling stalker. He's such a pedophile! It's so cliche that Bella's mind is the only one he can't read. He doesn't let Bella live her life. In fact, as hard as it is, I feel pity for the poor girl. Girls cut their necks, and set their user names as "MrsEdwardCullen" That is just pathetic. It's quite obvious that Stephenie Meyer is in love with her main character. If I read about "Edward's angelic features" one more time, I might shoot myself.

How long did SM spend on the plot of this book? It is extremely unrealistic. It is impossible for it to rain that much.So, if the Cullens skip class that much, won't they get in trouble? Hasn't anyone in Forks touched any of the Cullens even once? I think it's impossible to notice that the Cullen's never age. And two adults who are only thirty adopting a bunch of teenage kids? How dumb are these people?
I felt my brain cells dying when I picked up Twilight. How can people think that this is literature? It must be the apocalypse.』

『First off, I must give proper respect to Stephenie Meyer; anyone that can get young people excited about reading lengthy novels with complex plots (listening J.K.?) deserves all the accolades afforded them. That being said, I was prepared to hate "Twilight," simply because, as a high school English teacher, EVERY TEXT to TEXT REFERENCE I GET IS RELATED TO TWILIGHT. "Okay," I thought, "it is my professional obligation to see what the hoopla is all about." (know thy enemy and all that,) so I read the first book in a the series and I can say, with complete objectivity that the story was rich, the characters are real, and the storyline is one that I would like very much to visit again. I see now the genesis of the infatuation and, while I am far from ready to line up at midnight for the movies, I can appreciate good storytelling and engaging characters when I see it - and Twilight did not disappoint. As coming of age, adolescent angst stories go, it's as good as anything on the market today, and deserves the ardor which it has been afforded. Bravo, Ms. Meyer.』

『I have to admit, I was originally angry that this book existed. I figured that teenagers didn't need more fodder for being woebegone--and what could provide more fodder than a book about morose vampires unable to love? They live alone forever, no one understands them, etc--really, it's been done. Several times. It's no big deal, kids. Really.

And then I manned up and read it. Needless to say, Twilight was no where near as bad as I had assumed. It's a cute little story, very high school, and amusing nonetheless. I found the plot intriguing, from the awkward first love to the danger of Bella dealing with the vampires, and I happily read it in one day. I do wish that she had kept her abounding admiration of the vampires' physique to one paragraph as opposed to the twenty pages that her adoring adverbs and adjectives could have filled. Honestly, a simple mention of "Edward was fine," would suffice, and I would let my imagination run with it. All of her persistence made me feel as though she were a bit too desperate to convince me. I found myself asking, "Is he really so good looking? Does he have some huge flaw that we should be ignoring, besides the fact that he wants to eat his girlfriend?" So yes, a little less persistence would have been nice.

I liked the story and the characters, and can see why teenage girls eat this up--I certainly would have. What I don't understand is how these books became such a sensation, as this story is nothing new. Boy is vampire. Boy loves girl. Boy can't love girl--is sad. Girl is also sad. WEREWOLVES! Boy turns girl into vampire. Sunset (only usually not, as this would kill them all). The end!

How did this one particular interpretation of this story get so huge? It's certainly no more remarkable than several other versions of vampire angst that already exist. All I can say is, congrats to Stephanie Meyer for striking upon such a craze. We'll see if the second one holds up!』

Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward's sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer's writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction. (Ages 12 and up)--Patty Campbell

10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer

Q:Were you a fan ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer?Angel? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air?
A:I have never seen an entire episode ofBuffyorAngel. While I was writingTwilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did.

I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVoSurvivor,The Amazing Race, andAmerica's Next Top Model.

Q:What inspired you to writeTwilight? Is this the beginning of a series? Why write for teens?
A:Twilightwas inspired by a very vivid dream, which is fairly faithfully transcribed as chapter thirteen of the book. There are sequels on the way--I'm hard at work editing book two (tentatively titledNew Moon) right now, and book three is waiting in line for its turn.
I didn't mean to write for teens--I didn't mean to write for anyone but myself, so I had an audience of one twenty-nine year old (and later one thirty-one year old when my sister started reading). I think the reason that I ended up with a book for teens is because high school is such a compelling time period--it gives you some of your worst scars and some of your most exhilarating memories. It's a fascinating place: old enough to feel truly adult, old enough to make decisions that affect the rest of your life, old enough to fall in love, yet, at the same time too young (in most cases) to be free to make a lot of those decisions without someone else's approval. There's a lot of scope for a novel in that.

Q:What is your favorite vampire story? Fave vampire movie?
A:I guess my favorite vampire story would beThe Vampire Lestat, by Anne Rice, simply because it's one of the only ones I've ever read. I keep meaning to pick up Bram Stoker'sDracula, because I get asked this question so often and I should probably start with the classics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Again, I'm afraid to read other vampire books now, for fear of finding things either too similar, or too different from my own vampire world.

Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's.

Q:What other young adult authors do you read?
A:My favorite young adult author is L.M. Montgomery I also enjoy J.K. Rowling (but who doesn't?), and Ann Brashares. As a teen, I skipped straight to adult books (lots of sci-fi and Jane Austen), so I'm rediscovering the world of teen literature now.

A:The book with the most significant impact on my life isThe Book of Mormon. The book with the most significant impact on my life as a writer is probablySpeaker for the Dead, by Orson Scott Card, withRebeccaby Daphne du Maurier coming in as a close second.

Q:You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD, and one DVD--what are they?
A:The CD is easy:Absolutionby Muse, hands down. It's harder to give myself just one movie, but the one I watch most frequently isSense and Sensibility--the one with the screenplay by Emma Thompson. One book is impossible. I'd have to havePride and Prejudice, but I couldn't live without something by Orson Scott Card and a nice, thick Maeve Binchy, too.

Q:What is the worst lie you've ever told?
A:My lies are all very, very boring: "No, you really look great in hot pink!" "My children only watch one hour of TV a day." "I didn't eat the last Swiss Cake Roll--it must have been one of the kids." That's the best I've got.

A:It's late at night and the house is silent, but I'm still (miraculously) full of energy. I have my headphones in and I'm listened to a mix of Muse, Coldplay, Travis, My Chemical Romance, and The All-American Rejects. Beside me is a fabulous, and yet mysteriously low in calorie, cheesecake....

Q:If you could write your own epitaph, what would it say?
A:I'd like it to say that I really tried at the important things. I was never perfect at any of them, but I honestly tried to be a great mom, a loving wife, a good daughter, and a true friend. Under that, I'd want a list of my favoriteSimpsonsquotes.

Q:Who is the one person living or dead that you would like to have dinner with?
A:I'd love to have a chance to talk to Orson Scott Card--I have a million questions for him. Mostly things like, "How do you come up with this stuff?!" But, if he wasn't available, I'd settle for Matthew Bellamy (lead singer of Muse).

Q:If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
A:I'd want something offensive, rather than defensive. Like shooting fireballs from my hands. That way, you're really open to going either way--hero or villain. I like to have choices.
