(Sexy and fun!)
(It's nothing but porn.) I have purchased several DVDs in the Loving Sex series and they never disappoint. This one is great for women who want to show their man they care enough to seduce him, rather than waiting for him to initiate all the time. Watching this is a great kick-start to getting it on. The love and sex are portrayed as beautiful and inspiring, not sordid. The couples are attractive and it's good viewing for both men and women - the explicit sex scenes are pretty hot and there are informative extra features worth checking out. My girlfriend and I found this DVD tasteful, informative and sexy. The couples seem sincere and it's obvious they have real feelings for each other. Not just typical porn, it features loving, attractive couples and genuine information about modern sexuality. Yes, there's sex, and it's hot... but that makes it all the better! We were so pleased we ordered other DVDs from this series. There's no educational value here. It's just porn.
On the scale of porn though, I give it 3.5 stars. THE ULTIMATE MALE FANTASY! From the Alexander Institute's Loving Sex series, ranked "Best" by Men's Health Magazine. Explore men's sexual fantasies. (A great swindle indeed!)
(A Great Look Back)
(Inaccurate but highly entertaining and bizarre film, best taken as a cult curiosity. Mediocre DVD treatment, though)
(Talk About a Swindle) This film comes from a subgenre very popular in the underground of the 60s-70s....the freaked out "documentary" of a band usually involving their extremely hands-y manager. A better known film very similar to this one in style and intent is "The Song Remains The Same" by Led Zeppelin, where like this film, the manager takes a prominent role in front of the cameras with their band. Neither are literal documentaries nor are they completely non fiction, but a curious mixture of both. In this case, I wouldn't feel wrong in calling it an "exploitation" flick, in every sense of the word.
Some of the reviewers seemed to think/expect this was a straightforward rockumentary, so some background might clear things up. Malcolm McLaren attempted to follow in the peculiarly UK tradition of The Great Rock Manager with The Sex Pistols. This is where the manager functioned as a "member of the band" rather than merely involved in business matters and became almost as famous as their charges. These sorts of managers were involved with everything from writing songs to living with their bands/members to mixing their recordings to buying their dope and girls/boys. These sorts of managers could be the boon or bane of a rock band and end up with their hands in their pockets pretty much forever. On the positive end, these super hands-on managers could keep their kids' best interests in mind with regards to money, publishing, contracts, etc...and keep them out of all sorts of trouble, Grant and Stigwood/Forrester did an excellent job here. The bad/irresponsible/incompetent/naive/and just super stoned manager could cause them grief that lasts decades (Epstein, Kit Lambert-Chris Stamp, Oldham, etc...). I think McLaren falls in the latter category, but rather intentionally unlike Epstein, Oldham, and Lambert-Stamp. Everything I've ever seen makes me believe McLaren would have put these kids in any situation, no matter how dangerous and just plain stupid, to get attention and make a buck or quid....FOR HIMSELF. In this film, it really shows.
This trend started with and was its most successful with "the Dinosaurs" as the Pistol's generation of punks called them but what we now call "Classic Rockers" and has mostly died out with McLaren being the last of the breed....for better or worse. (The most famous examples past The Beatles/Epstein are: Lambert and Stamp with The Who, Andrew Loog Oldham with The Rolling Stones, Peter Grant with Led Zeppelin, and Robert Stigwood/Roger Forrester with Eric Clapton from Cream in 1966 until the late 90s. There are others, but these are the most famous and/or successful partnerships) This manager-as-5th-Beatle/Pistol thing was a phenomena almost exclusively English, although Andy Warhol tried his hand at the role for 5 minutes with the Velvet Underground.
I watched this knowing this very iffy history of UK bands/managers and kept that in mind, but still found it unsettling. The level of crass exploitation these kids were subject to is painful to watch. It's the most extreme case I know about. This is McLaren and the whole band-manager thing taken to it's most illogical and cynical extreme. It's sad to realize that he's probably still making more money off the Pistol's than any of the living members or dead one's estates for the rest of his life.
If you like freaked out films and/or are a music history buff/Sex Pistols fanatic, buy this knowing some of the background and watch it for what it is.....a rather uncomfortable curiosity piece.
As for the quality of this film, unless some major restoration work is done, its quality isn't going to improve between VHS or DVD. If you still have a VCR and/or are a VHS enthusiast, buy a used copy as a nice little rock curiosity. I bought this on VHS and I wouldn't have wanted to pay more than the $1 or so that I paid, so needless to say I think it's worth the smallest amount possible on either format. In other words, I wouldn't suggest spending the extra $$$ for an imported disc for this title.
Simply a bizarre mix of truth and loads of Malcolm BS- this documentary spoof of the Sex pistols is the reigning king of music films. Midgets- Malcolm- great live footage and Monty Python inspired lunacy help tell the tale of the rise and fall of rocks greatest thorn in the side. Sliced with entertaining cartoons of real life pistol happenings and some guerilla styled film making and scenes with a soon to be dead Sid vicious that are no doubt priceless- the fact is they dont make em like this anymore- and that special moment in time is mytholigized to near absurdity. Brilliant fun and a must for all fans of music and late 70s culture!!!! This is important as John Beverly is dead for many years, watching this recalls memories of these youths in the prime of their rebellion.
In these times this film seems a novelty once more.
Each member of the band plays up to the camera in his own time. I couldn't pick a favorite scene as I like the whole film, but the end with the obituaries of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon stand out as a sad memoir that that realize that there was Fragility behind the tough grimaces. It's good to see this film finally out on DVD, but the movie deserved a better DVD release than this one -- not because it's an accurate telling of the Sex Pistols' story (it's not) or because it's even particularly coherent (it's not), but because it's an extremely entertaining and bizarre period piece.
First of all, this sorta (some might say "pseudo") documentary tells the story from the perspective of the band's manager Malcolm McLaren, who is a BS artist of the highest order. Other reviewers have already laid out all the claims he makes -- he created the Sex Pistols solely for the purpose of swindling the record companies, the Pistols were not meant to have any talent, blah blah. Of course I don't believe what he says, and I'm not sure even he believes it, but it still makes for a great story nonetheless. Putting aside the veracity of McLaren's story, this movie isn't really even a proper documentary, but a random and bizarre mish-mash of archive footage of various Sex Pistols performances mixed in with McLaren's own self-indulgent babblings, animated skits, fictional re-enactments, an extended portion which follows ex-Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook to Brazil to hook up with notorious train robber Ronnie Biggs, and some truly weird scenes (such as the masked man who bursts into a room with a talking Rottweiler). No, it's not accurate or even a conventional documentary, but if you appreciate bizarre stuff like I do, it's quite entertaining and often hilarious.
Too bad the DVD release isn't particularly good. As other people have already said, the film transfer is lame (and at least on my DVD, there are some really annoying black dots at the right edge of the screen), and there's not a whole lot in the way of DVD extra goodies. And the director's commentary track by Julien Temple is all but useless. Most directors use the commentary tracks to tell interesting stories about the film's making and to give insight on the making on the movie, but Temple babbles on incoherently more than he gives any kind of useful or interesting information.
I'd recommend this DVD for people who've already seen this movie, are hardcore Sex Pistols completists, or just like the kind of bizarre underground cult films that the '70s produced scads of (other films of this ilk would include John Waters' early films or another punksploitation film "Jubilee"). Casual Sex Pistols fans might want to save their money, though. If you're looking for an informative and accurate movie about the Sex Pistols, watch "The Filth and the Fury," the 2000 documentary that was also directed by Julien Temple. The only swindle here is this movie. It is a farce and a lie and a slap in the face of the legacy of the Sex Pistols. And even as a piece of fictional filmaking, it's just not that good. As others have noted, the period clips of Pistols and solo Sid Vicious performances are the only redeeming feature. But the "story" as such is lacking in so many ways; the acting and script are hilariously bad and the film transfer is simply atrocious. Buy it if you will ( on sale or used if you can ) but please don't take it seriously. Cheeky and chaotic, the 1980The Great Rock 'N' Roll Swindlebegan life as a Russ Meyer project (co-written by Roger Ebert) calledWho Killed Bambi?. Julien Temple (Earth Girls Are Easy) took over, working closely with the Pistols' former manager, Malcolm McClaren, and overhauled the script to focus almost exclusively on McClaren's self-serving recollections of turning an unknown band into a success through poor musicianship, crafty bookings, and well-publicized bad manners at pivotal moments. Temple's rococo approach evokes an 18th century riot (in which effigies of the Pistols are burned), noir-like passages featuring guitarist Steve Jones as a thief, and the unholy sight of McClaren taking a bath in palatial surroundings. There's little footage of the Pistols themselves, though what exists is choice: the band's infamous Jubilee Day performance on the Thames, their last gig in San Francisco. Years later, McClaren's contention that he pulled one over on us because the Pistols couldn't play is patently absurd.--Tom Keogh The Definitive Punk Movie - Finally on DVD!The Sex Pistols star in director Julien Temple's bizarre and hilarious fictional documentary that charts the rise and fall of punk's most notorious band through the eyes of its calculating manager, Malcolm McLaren. Mixing animation and midgets with footage of some of The Pistols' most electrifying live performances, the 1980 film presents the band's success as an elaborate scam perpetrated by McLaren to make "a million pounds" at the expense of record companies, outraged moralists, the British Royal Familyand even the fans and band members themselves. The Great Rock Rock 'n' Roll Swindle was called "a parable of our times" by the Guardian (UK), but most music fans simply consider it one of the best rock films ever. More than 25 years after their breakup, The Sex Pistols' music continues to influence punk and post-punk bands the world over. The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle shows why. customer 's review (Great comedy.)
(Sex Monster)
(It's alive!! It's alive!!!)
(I thought this movie was hilarious)
(low quality exloitatio nfilm) This is one of the best comedies I have ever seen. When a friend described the premise of this movie - a reluctant wife enters a ménage à trois upon her husband's urging and likes it so much that she becomes a 'sex monster' - my curiosity was piqued. I wasn't disappointed. The movie could have lapsed into the prurient but didn't; instead, the characters were evenly developed and the plot grew. It was frequently amusing, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny. Not a bad 'date movie'...it would probably spark some conversation!>:) Mike Binder directs and stars in this amusing comedy about a ordinary married man who wants to experience new things with his wife, Mariel Hemingway (Tv's L.A. Law, Bad Moon), in the sex categorie. So the 2 have a threesome (menagetrois) and soon after Binder's wife cant get enough of it and he finds out he has created a sex monster. The cast is great, especially Hemingway in a role she hasnt played before. Binder is so enjoyable you forget the stupid stuff and your just watching him bumble away which gives the movie its energy juice. Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects, Spiders Web) has a supporting role as one of Binder's friends and Melissa Crider (A Boy Called Hate, Frailty) also stars as one of Hemingway's sexual partners. A guilty pleasure in some aspects. The highlights would have to be when Binder, his wife and the 3rd company are having she, so he leaves the room when he cant take the sex no more. I ended up seeing this film, on one of the movie channels on my cable. I usually don't like soft-core pornography, but this movie is more about the laughs than it is about the sex.I think it's funny how the husband is so estatic that he has a lesbian for a wife, until he's out of the picture. I really just thought this film was hilarious, and because it doesn't focus only on the sexual aspect I'm going to reccomend it to alot of my friends. Sick film, alwful and pointless. No plot, not funny, emberessing. Rerations < Sex Monster >

customer 's review (Loved it)
(Filmic Metaphor: Seeing Ourselves In Our Movies)
(Pleasantville)
(A splash of color.)
(How about some marshmallow rice-crispy squares? Those are swell.) I know it's kinda leftist and preachy, but I loved it and it touched something inside me. So I'm a bleeding-heart liberal...whatever. But the movie does make some great points about the stiff and unrealistic crap the 50's tried to paint everyone into. (80's kid here...but I've seen plenty of 50's TV and I know my history) I love the idea of this film and how...just as in the real world...as color TV came to be...so did a more open minded world. I've read some negative reviews and most just complain about the ideals this film portray...but hey...it's a free country for a reason folks. I do appreciate that most reviewers admit the acting and effects of this film are good...it's just a great film all around IMO and I would recommend it to anyone...regardless of your political ideals. Try putting those aside while watching. Either way it will spark a reaction and that is what art is all about. Pleasantville is more than just a small-town piece of Americana trapped in a time warp that is fixated on the conservatively clean-cut 1950's, it is a small fictional town that finds itself struggling with social issues that are all too real and timeless for those who continue to struggle with their divisive influences. Racism, bigotry, artistic and intellectual censorship, conformity without question or debate, non-conformity with purpose and hope, and the struggle for individuality are all beautifully and sensitively illustrated though filmic metaphors and touching performances in this family film. Whether you are one who has always found comfort and security conforming to the assertive voices and visions of others or know the personal struggle of leaving comfort to secure and assert your own voice and vision in a world that doesn't always agree, this is a poignant film that is highly capable of striking a chord in the hearts of us all. Greast film - a modern-day Morality Play (read Genesis first to fully appreciate it). Also beautiful cinematic techniques. Pleasantville starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon is a good comedy/drama but I was expecting so much more. The two leads are so talented and Joan Allen and Jeff Daniels bring realism to their roles. The problem I have with this film is the slow pace, it feels too long and dragged out and the black and white is kind of distracting when color is introduced halfway into the film. Interesting flick but poorly excuated. Pleasantville is an underappreciated movie full of interesting, deep concepts hidden fairly well with subtle acting and introspective dialogue, and with not-so-subtle visual images. In fact, the visual aspects of this movie, the blending of color with black-and-white, are incredible at times. Seeing a black-and-white tree burst into flames is quite beautiful. Seeing an entire town visually transform from stale black-and-white to vivid color is technically stunning.
David (Tobey McGuire) is a modern, nerdy teenager who follows a `50s-esque show "Pleasanville", a sitcom of sorts with the shucks and darns expected during the nicest dinner at Mayberry. It's a `50s utopia, where the men wear suits, work 9-to-5, and the women have dinner ready and ironing done promptly. All of that changes when a TV repairman (Don Knotts) gives David a fanciful TV-remote that transports him and his sister Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) into the TV show.
As a big fan of the show, David - who is now Bud - knows everything about the perfectly balanced town. He believes in the town, and the harmonious nature with which everything works. He knows the town is perfect, and the basketball team has never missed a shot (possibly the funniest part of the movie - SWISH! SWISH! SWISH!) Jennifer - who is now Mary Sue - on the other hand, is a Pleasantville neophyte and none too happy about the step back in time. In no time at all, Mary Sue has her legs wrapped around the town basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) at Lover's Lane where she teaches him to double-dribble. With Pandora's Box opened, the black-and-white town begins to show incredible changes: vivid colors appear out of nowhere. With color representing change and maybe even improvement, it's up to Bud to not only maintain the status quo, but also to explain the rapid changes to the townsfolk as he tries to find a way home amidst the chaos.
I could have done without the over-the-top racial connotation, with the town beginning a counter-rebellion against the "coloreds", and the infidelity angle was contradictory to the movie's actual message, but it's easily ignorable because of the superb acting and ground-breaking cinematography. Great movie. Life imitates art when two modern-day teenagers get sucked into the too-perfect black-and-white world of a 1950s sitcom. Trapped and trying to find a way home the two find themselves bringing color to the lives of pleasantvilles rigid naive townspeople. Studio: New Line Home Video Release Date: 12/11/2007 Starring: Tobey Maguire Joan Allen Run time: 124 minutes Rating: Pg13 Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big,Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two '90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world ofPleasantville, aLeave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop, and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H. Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessivePleasantvilledevotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock&roll, free thinking, and soul-changing Technicolor. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town),Pleasantvilleis a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious color. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloreds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome, and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory.--Mark Englehart Rerations < Pleasantville (New Line Platinum Series) >
