Unless the backlight is ON the display is unreadable. Even with the backlight on the unit MUST be tilted at about a 45 degree angle before you can read the display, unlike most LCD displays I am used to which can be viewed from almost any angle.
If you can put up with the poor visibility the unit does function as advertised. Contains many puzzles of 5 different levels and allows the user to input puzzles from other sources. The ability to turn off the unit, then automatically resume that game when it is next turned on is a great feature. As is the ability to enter and erase pencil marks. I also found a method of automatically turning on all possible entries in a cell as pencil marks, however when I entered a value in a cell the corresponding pencil marks in other cells did not disappear (would be a nice option if they did).
The unit contains an FM radio which I feel is an unnescessary option, would much rather they replace it with an SD card slot so you could either save your entered games, or access games from other sources.

(This really is strangely addictive) 『I don't know what it is but Brain Age is freakishly addictive. I've only had it for about four days but I've played it every day for at least an hour. I do the little training exercises. I play a couple rounds of Sudoku. Then I turn it off. An hour later I turn it back on and play Sudoku some more. I go through the math training exercises again for fun. Now obviously I won't do this forever but I can see myself playing this game at least a couple of times a week from now on. It's just that type of game. You can pick it up, play for a little bit, turn it off, and come back when you have a couple of minutes free. And it's fun. Okay, maybe math doesn't sound fun to everyone but I like it. It's fun to see how much faster I can get the answers. And I just unlocked a new training exercise which gives me a sense of accomplishment. Maybe I'm just easy to please. When I bought Brain Age I was wondering if I would like it. Now I have my answer. Plus, the inclusion of Sudoku was a nice touch. I've never really been able to do Sudoku before but I'm getting the hang of it pretty quickly. The notation system was nice and easy to use and I love that it'll tell you when you make a mistake. Obviously an improvement over a book where you can make mistakes and not know when or where you went wrong. I'm sure plenty of people have mentioned it but there are a few issues with the game. I do have trouble with the Stroop Test (say the color of the text, not the word) recognizing what color I'm saying. I have a quiet voice so usually I just hold the DS a little closer to my mouth. Problem solved. My biggest problems were actually in the writing. I make my 7s with a line through the middle. Obviously I had to stop doing that while playing Brain Age. It gets confused. I make my 8s with two circles. Sometimes if I didn't write fast enough Brain Age thought I was making zeroes. So I had to switch to the figure 8 for the game. And last but not least my 5 was apparently confusing the Sudoku game. Sometimes it thought I was making notes instead of writing 5. But that's also a pretty easy thing to fix. Occasionally I get confused letters for the memorize the words game but I think my handwriting is just bad. That's not really even a problem. After the initial breaking in period I've been fine with Brain Age's little quirks. It certainly doesn't interfere with my enjoyment.』

Pros: 1. No pieces no lose, no tables to commandeer 2. You sort your pieces in "trays" just like you would do on a table. You can have as many trays as you like. 3. No threat of someone messing it up when you're not around. You can save your puzzle and go back to it later. 4. You can set the level of difficulty to suit your mood. There are four levels of difficulty. 5. It even plays music while you work (you can turn it off) 6. Fun for the whole family (unless you upload x-rated photos)
Cons: 1. It's not quite as good as the real thing, but it comes close. 2. When you've played the easy stages with the pieces the right way up and a background image to guide you, it's hard to make yourself graduate to the hard stuff. 3. You can't experience the sweet sensation of finding mistakes, because once a piece is in the right vicinity it jumps gleefully into place, and can't be dislodged. Not sure if you can turn this off, but I'm going to see if I can. 4. There are several categories of puzzle themes, and you need to load each section individually. This is a bit of a pain, as you have to close all IE or Firefox applications to do it.
Recommended for puzzle lovers who are short on puzzle-fixing space, and people who'd like to be able to do puzzles on a laptop while commuting. A great way to utilise some spare time.
