This little book seems to be pretty understandable, and I THINK that I'm beginning to learn to do Sudoku. I wanted to do it to keep my brain alive and healthy, and while it is hard for me, I really think I'm learning it.
This book is the only thing you need to become proficient at solving Sudoku's.

I recently started practicing Sudoku because Bridge, Pinochle, etc were not mentally challenging enough.

I read two other books who talked like a cross between a lawyer, and a mathematician. I will not give the names of those books because I am talking about THIS book.

I like this book because he gives strategies you can use such as cross hatching, virtual cross hatching, X wings, XY wings, and jelly fish, and more importantly he has a puzzle on the page right there so you can put those strategies into practice right then and there.

I do not like writing in books so I copies the puzzle and worked them on a dry erase board.

With this book I have gone from the easy puzzles up to moderate, and now I am working the easy to moderate squigly Sudoku's in just a few short weeks!

I prefer to work squiggly puzzles because it forces the Sudoku player to throw the very basic techniques like cross hatching out the window and attack the puzzle wholisticly
I look for Sudoku books with three qualities. First, I want puzzles that have only one solution. If I find a book that includes puzzles with more than one solution I discard it. Two, I want books with grids large enough that I can enter candidates in the cells. Third, I want books with challenging puzzles. Many of the descriptions on Amazon omit such info.

I prefer grids that are about 4½" x 4 ½". The grids in my newspaper are about 3" x 3" (which is tolerable because not many candidates are needed).

Paul Stephens' Mastering Sudoku Week by Week: The puzzles have only one solution; the grids are about 3" x 3". There are 52 puzzles in this book. This is an excellent instruction book for those who want to learn to solve difficult puzzles.

As another reviewer noted, the font size and style could be improved; as is, it is often difficult to read.

The methods this book has are helpful but the format isn't easy to use. The numbers it uses in the illustrations are a light green with a green shading for background and they aren't block numbers but curvy. The result is numbers (candidates, or pencil mark numbers in the cells) which are difficult to read. On top of that, when they're eliminated they're crossed through, so now you have small, crossed-out, non-block font numbers in green on a green background. This is the best they could do?
Also I found the explanations to be fairly vague and had to read the notes next to the figures/illustrations to try to figure out what the technique actually was which was being illustrated in the lesson. So, it lacks clarity.
As to the "52 steps; week by week" I don't get it. Please don't tell me you'd actually spend a week getting through one "step" in the book; that it would take you a year to get through the whole thing?!

A great book for beginning information, however, on the more difficult solutions, it would have been beneficial if they had given more examples with solutions.

This book offers more challenging puzzles than your average "easy" books. It was great for the addicted!
I bought (and eventually burned) another Sudoku book which had very inaccurately grouped puzzles. It's very first puzzle, supposedly "gentle", was in fact pretty difficult. I got very annoyed with the book.

By contrast, this Will Shortz book seems to have done a good job of ranking the puzzles. It's a very simple book. Well done. I've gotten hours of enjoyment from solving theses puzzles.
This is a nice little book of puzzles. It is as it says it is, easy. Most of the entries have 30+ squares of the 81 with given numbers, so that filling out the remaining squares is a matter of simple logic. Although nothing but the elements of the game are provided as instructions, the ease with which the puzzles are completed helps the beginner learn some of the beginning logic behind doing them. I find I enjoy discovering the "tricks" of finishing these puzzles more satisfying than I would being told before hand what they are. Certainly I learn them more thoroughly by this method, because I have to intuit them; I actually have to understand the "why" behind the manuver. In my opinion this type of learning is inherently helpful in other tasks as well; that it is to say, transferable to ones life settings in other ways--although I have to admit I couldn't tell you specifically how or why. I think getting school age children involved in doing these types of puzzles would be a good idea, since it would help them learn the principles of logical thinking without the pain of word problems.
Not the best Sudoku book I own, but very addicting.

You don't need any mathematics knowledge: just supply a pencil and an inquisitive mind. oh boy.... I am 'almost sorry' I discovered these puzzles. Had never tried them before, spent hours the first few times I used the book. addicting! good mind-bending puzzles. fun.
This book of hanje puzzles was great fun. Each puzzle was rated for difficulty...not necessarily related to the size of the grid. The resulting pictures have been pretty interesting.
My only complaint would be the roughness of the paper. I've finally started photocopying the puzzles onto better paper.
I'm pretty good at these kinds of puzzles, but many of the harder puzzles in this book took me several hours to complete--very challenging. For the most part, the resulting pictures were worth it.

O'Ekaki, also known as hanjie or griddlers are great fun. This book as the previous books by this author is very high quality. The puzzles range from very easy to very difficult. Ratings are given as 1 pencil for easy to 4 pencils for difficult. There are not many 1-2 pencils.Those labelled 3 pencils actually range from fairly easy to quite difficult. Unlike some other books I have bought containing this type of puzzle, the paper is good quality so mistakes can be erased, and I haven't found any errors.
This is probably one of the most fun books of this puzzle out there. I'm addicted to them so have bought quite a few. This would be a good one for both beginners and experienced solvers. It has a nice mix of easy to challenging, and the results are interesting puzzles.
This is by far one of the best pixel puzzles books out there. I can only wish that he would publish monthly instead of annually! The grids are mostly no larger than 30 X 30, with many, many in the 25 X 25 range, and just a few challengers bigger than 30 X 30. The grading of the puzzles from 1-5 are fairly accurate, so you can choose what level you feel like working at and have fun with it. Like all pixels, the smaller puzzles leave a little to be desired in the quality of the picture, but that's to be expected. The larger puzzles turn out pretty nice to beautiful in some cases, and the ones in between are pretty fair representations of some object, not too busy (like the Griddlers).

The only reason I took off one star is for the quality of the paper. It's not as bad as those terrible Griddlers, but it does have some problems. Fortunately, it erases fairly easily, but it also absorbs moisture from the air very easily, so ONLY use this as an indoor book (not recommended for taking to the beach or camping!)
Like sudoku, O'Ekaki (Paint by Numbers) provides an entertaining test of one's logic, using a grid as its playing field. But rather than leaving the player with boxes of numbers, O'Ekaki ends with a flourish: a fun piece of art that seems to magically appear when you've correctly darkened the final square grid. And each puzzle's title is an amusing clue to the picture that will ultimately emerge. The puzzle challenge on several levels, from beginning to expert, all resulting in a sometimes elaborate picture.

And every one is designed by the inventor of O'Ekaki himself!

Don't waste your time. I picked it up for 9.99 at Best Buy and why O why did I trash the receipt? Half the games don't work, the other half aren't fun, and the only reason the games number in the 5000's is that each level of space invaders counts as a game, the ten versions of poker are nothing more than variations in the way the cards are represented, and, surprise, ten versions of turbo break out, each exactly the same save for the color of the ball and the blocks. The only game worth playing is Majong, the oriental game of matching tiles, but you can buy compilations specializing in the game so why bother with this thoughtlessly assembled package. At 1.98 used on amazon, you'll get what you pay for.
