customer 's review (Exclibur Electronic NY53CS New York Times Touch Screen Sudoku Game)
(Good, but needs a backlight)
(Screen is too small and needs a back light!) This item needs improvements to make it user friendly. The screen is VERY difficult to see. Back lighting would be a welcome addition. The start-up numbers should be distinctive. The player should be able to distinguish them from the selections he enters. The puzzles do vary in difficulty, and I think all are solvable without guessing. There have only been a couple I haven't been able to get, out of over 100 that I've done. (It has about 900 puzzles.)
The touch screen works well with the stylus. The holder for the stylus works pretty well too; I actually haven't lost it and it's been a year. I've been careful not to scratch the screen. It's just plastic, but recessed. I don't know if it would hold up in a rougher environment.
There is no backlight, so this means you need a point light source to be able to see the screen clearly. As in sunlight or a lamp. On the other hand, I've been using the unit for over a year with the same batteries.
There is no indication (like an underline) of which numbers were the initial clues. So backing out mistakes is more difficult. I've used another unit that let you mark a cell as a guess. Excalibur makes a more deluxe (and expensive) version of the unit, but I haven't checked if it has these kinds of features.
For the number of puzzles, price, and long battery life this unit is a good entry-level electronic version of the game. Screen is VERY difficult to see and too small. There are eight contrast selections and not one of them works for me. This was a gift and it is a great idea, but I need to find one with a larger screen. Can't get enough of Sudoku? The New York Times Touch Screen Sudoku is the hottest game in the world! Along with its convenient ergonomic design this game is lightweight and small enough to bring anywhere, just place it in your purse or pocket and enjoy the game whenever the mood strikes you. The NY53CS contains more than 800 puzzles for you to solve and saves your game in memory. All these amazing games were selected by world renowned puzzle expert, Will Shortz. It contains three levels of strategy which consists of easy, medium or hard levels. Includes a stylus. Requires 2 AAA batteries not included. Hint key Includes stylus Uses 2 AAA batteries not included Weight - 1.00 pound Rerations < Excalibur Electronic NY53CS New York Times Touch Screen Sudoku Game >

(Just a warning, these can be EXTREMELY difficult!!!)
(The best)
(Djape creates the best killer sudoku puzzles) This man can do no wrong. Bought two copies straight off, because I knew it would be good, and I was not disappointed. I consider myself to be a decent puzzler, and I am unable to finish some of these puzzles. I'm hoping to find some new techniques to solve the ones toward the back, so if you know some I'd appreciate it. The paper is really nice, so if you have to erase a lot it won't tear. I just wanted to let my fellow puzzlers know that when my puzzle books got lost somewhere along the way, Amazon had replacements to me in 2 days!! The service was great!!! Good luck with this book! If you are a novice at killer sudoku, you may want to try a different book... Finally a new Djape killer sudoku book! In my opinion, these are the best ones out there. Consistent in difficulty, printed on quality paper, easy to read, and in a small enough size to carry with you on the subway or while in a waiting room. If you've never done killer sudoku before, I'd recommend starting with easier ones. They can be very hard! The later puzzles in these books are of ridiculous difficulty. Definitely not for people who want to mindlessly waste time - killer sudoku requires concentration, patience, and good logic and addition skills. Plain sudoku will feel incredibly boring after doing these for a while! I have all of Djape's Killer books. Check his website [...] for his daily puzzle creations. Since discovering the killer Sudoku variant, I have abandoned the traditional "vanilla" Sudoku. The killers are far more interesting, challenging, rewarding ... and addicting. And Djape publishes the best killer puzzles IMHO. Same format, same difficulties, NEW puzzles! Another sequel in the Killer Sudoku series of books from DJAPE. Brand new puzzles, with the same intensity and intricacy as the old ones. There are no trivial puzzles in this book - the accent is again on moderate and difficult puzzles. Contents: - 100 Killer Sudoku - 10 Killer Sudoku X - 10 Killer Sudoku with diagonal cages - 30 ZERO Killer Sudoku (blank cages) Rerations < Revenge Of Killer Sudoku 2: 150 Killer Sudoku Puzzles >

(Killer Sudoku Squared) I really like Kendoku or KenKen puzzles and this book has a huge variety. However they are very difficult except for the first few. The book is a great challenge but be prepared to spend a lot of time on even some of the easier puzzles. You also need to keep checking your answers because a single mistake will wreck everything and it will almost never be discovered until you are almost done and then it is too late to fix anything. Simple example of the challenge here: 18x (in 3 squares)could be 1x2x9 or 3x3x2 or 1x3x6 - if it is in 4 sqaures there are then so many more combinations. Even more math emphasis than Killer Sudoku, employing multiplication, division and subtraction. Sound challenging? Fortunately, he starts out with easy versions using only the numbers one through five.
Overall, I miss the use of three by three cells here and still occasionally get tripped up by the use of the same number twice within a cell. But they are engaging and a nice change of pace from Killer Sudoku. "Square Wisdom" puzzles are also known under another name. The name might be different, but the puzzles are of the same kind and ever so exciting! These Sudoku-like puzzles require you to use all four basic arithmetic operations: +, -, * and /. One must develop new skills and find new techniques in order to solve them. In this book there are 200 puzzles ranging from 5x5 to 9x9 in size. In some puzzles some operators are removed, just to make it a little more difficult. All in all, lots of fun is absolutely guaranteed! Rerations < Square Wisdom: 200 Kendoku Puzzles >

(Highly recommended)
(Great Fun!) Good for my seven year-old grandson who likes this sort of activity--he still needs some direction from me. Might be perfect for 8-9 year olds? This is a good book on Sudoku for kids. The book includes 77 puzzles. The puzzles are of two sizes: 6x6, and 9x9. The solutions are at the end of the book. There are no categrories or levels of difficulty for the puzzles.
The first three pages in this book are dedicated for strategy, hints, rules, or tips. All the puzzles in the book are Classic Sudoku (with numbers). There are no Alphabet Sudoku (with letters) or Symbol Sudoku (with shapes and symbols) like the two books "Kindergarten Sudoku" and "Super Sudoku for Kids". Also, there are no simple 4x4 puzzles like some of the other books.
Our family, like the rest of the world it seems, has become addicted to Suduko and my daughter is no exception. Being four she of course had to have "her own book" and we chose this one. The book, with it's larger grids and only one puzzle per page, is very kid-friendly. The difficulty level is right one the mark, the puzzles are challenging but not so difficult that a child would get discouraged. My daughter really enjoys playing Suduko and is very proud of the completed puzzles in her book, and I'm sure your child will be too. Now if she could just figure out how to tie her shoes......
The hotter-than-hot puzzles, now in a format just for kids! Youngsters who want to start solving can have fun with these smaller sudokus that are right on their level. Instead of the usual sudoku grid, which goes from 1 to 9, most of these puzzles go only from 1 to 6. It’s simpler, increases the chances for success, and minimizes frustration. At the same time, children are building their skills—and preparing themselves to work on the 22 regular-size versions that are found at the end of the book. An introduction teaches the basic sudoku rules and offers easy-to-follow hints on how to figure out which number goes where. “The new international craze!”— The New York Times“People are wild about it...”—Sherry Stern of theLos Angeles Times Rerations < Sudoku Puzzles for Kids >

Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review(An absolute waste of money, time) (mind builder-crude and overpriced) (Not what I thought) I purchased this product, hoping to see an interface and challenge questions like the DS Lite games Brain Age or Big Brain. I was disappointed.
This software has a poor installation process(does not allow you to choose where to install), a poorer interface, and a very tedious, cumbersome process to get to the so-called challenge questions. The questions are like an exam questions. There are no immediate feedback. There are no animation. And a person (kid) would immediately give up, given what it would take to launch and work with the software. Not user friendly at all. It is truly an example of a use-once-only, uninstall immediately after software.Software in general and also the user interface is rather crude. Maybe i could justify it as a $10 shareware product. Also under vista the software often asks me to put the cd in the cd player when the cd is in the player. Doing a complete new install sometimes cures the problem.
Over priced and not worth the effort. This item was really not what I thought it would be. The software wont even load if your not connected to the internet. Something I will not let my kids use because of this. This is just not a product I would recomend.Core Mind Builder is packed with hundreds of professionally designed brain teasers to improve your creative problem-solving skills and abstract reasoning powers. customer 's review(had promise, missing a key feature) I have never played Sudoku before. I bought this long ago to learn how to play as I thought doing it electronically would save the erasing that would be involved doing the puzzles in the paper, in fact it has a mode where you can enter puzzles from the paper. Its also something small I could take it with me places, especially for something boring like the waiting room when called for jury duty.
Well the jury duty day came and I brought it and the instructions. Set it on easy mode and off I went. Its easy to use, the cursor lets you move all around and it has a clue key to let you know what numbers are valid for a particular location.
I got a couple rows filled in and then discovered I made a mistake and wanted to swap some numbers on the previous row. No problem I thought, it has a clear feature. Well that erases ALL the numbers you entered up to that point.
I looked at the instructions and it said it has an undo feature. Unfortunately that only undoes the numbers in the order you entered them, so you can't go back to numbers you entered 10 values earlier and clear them as it will clear all those 10 values to get to that one.
Worse yet it won't let you enter numbers if its an invalid entry (if there is already that number in the square or row) so you have no way of swapping two values on the same row, column or square. This is something that could easily be done if you were doing it on paper as you just erase and swap.
Even with my extremely limited knowledge of the game, this seems to be too much of an oversight and an extreme handicap, especially when first learning the game. So will dump it off at my next garage sale and find something better. Usually ships in 24 hours We love puzzles. Sudoku is an attractive and intriguing puzzle that is gaining attention (and addicts) all over the world. Professor Fuji's Sudoku shows you how to start playing and solving Sudoku puzzles. Then there are hundreds of Sudoku puzzles to continue challenging your brain. It's addictive fun. It would be nice to explain the ancient derivatives of this game with an exotic Asian name but its origins are relatively recent. Originally called simply Number Place, the first puzzle was created by Howard Garns, a freelance puzzle constructor, in 1979. The puzzle was first published in New York in the late 1970s by the specialist puzzle publisher Dell Magazines in its magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games, under the title Number Place. The puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in the paper Monthly Nikolist in April 1984. The puzzle was named by Kaji Maki, the president of Nikoli. At a later date, the name was abbreviated to Sudoku (pronounced sue-do-koo; su = number, doku = single); In 1986, Nikoli introduced two innovations which guaranteed the popularity of the puzzle: the number of givens was restricted to no more than 30 and puzzles became "symmetrical" (meaning the givens were distributed in rotationally symmetric cells). It is now published in mainstream Japanese periodicals.
