(From the Board Games Editor at BellaOnline.com) This book is a great mind challenge. You will lose track of time working on these puzzles. I bought this as a gift, so cannot give a fair review as it is going to someone else. This is simply another great collection of sudoku puzzles. This one will make a great holiday gift as it was very recently released and it's likely that your favorite puzzler will not yet own it.
Of special interest are the super-sudoku puzzles in this book, they're definitely not for a coffee break: you'd better have a good block of time available to work them out!

(Very Challenging - going for 2nd time!)
(Disappointing)
(The Best of the Best)
(Its tips are not terrific) This book is excellent for the person who can do a medium to hard puzzle in minutes, not for a beginner at all. Do not be fooled by the instructions in the front, it will not help you at this level of sudoku.
This book was a challenge to me which is why I loved it so much! I developed my own techniques to conquer the puzzle. Mentally, a real workout. Now, the only problem is I am having trouble finding another book like it, with advanced puzzles to challenge me. I need Sudoku Genius II.
Very Challenging - I loved this book so much, I ordered a second one when I was done with the first - I figured they were challenging enough to do it a 2nd time! I also ordered the second one in this series by Tom Sheldon. I get a bit tired of people claiming how fantastically hard their puzzles are, only to be disappointed in the end. In the end with this book I was very disappointed. The author claims 9 Circles of Sudoku Hell, but the highest level, "The Ninth Circle" contains only one puzzle and it can be solved in under an hour, pretty much ditto for all the rest.
I thought the master class in advanced strategies disappointing, simply a rehash of strategies known around the world.
What I really came away with from this book is the knowledge that my Sudoku solving process is superior to the author's lore, and that maybe I should write a book on Sudoku solving and get the author's permission to use puzzles from this book as examples.
This is by far the best book of Sudoku puzzles I've ever done. They averaged about 50 minutes each to solve. I was hoping to find more like this one. He doesn't waste your time with simple no brainers.
More, please! I bought this book for the "master class in advanced strategies," not for the puzzles, and I was disappointed. The tips are skimpy and not very clearly explained. I have a Ph.D. in philosophy (which includes logic), so I am no dummy, yet several of the solving tips in the opening section I had to read three or four times until I could correctly correlate the commentary to the diagrams. If you're looking for difficult puzzles, then read the other reviews, but if you're looking for solving methods for difficult puzzles, don't buy this book. (Fun, but could have been more challenging)
(puzzle book)
(100 Samurai Sudoku Puzzles 2)
(My favourite puzzles) Like the first volume, Peter Greene's 2nd book of samurai sudoku puzzles is great fun! The puzzle are symmetrical and pleasing to the senses. The page size is comfortable for working the large puzzles and the paper is a good for the inevitable erasures. Very few of the puzzles leave you with several sets of pairs, which result in having to guess and check.
Mr. Greene says if you do two puzzles a week, the book will last almost a year. Well, who can be limited to two a week? Maybe I'm just getting better at doing these puzzles, but I got through the whole book in a couple or three months. I enjoyed this collection of puzzles. I don't think the puzzles are as hard as the author claims, "all the puzzles in this book are hard" maybe 20% are more involved; it is true that the last third of the puzzles are more difficult than the fist third, but it took me only 30 minutes to do puzzle number 100.
On the plus side, the author managed to avoid all of those annoying "choose a number and see what happens" tricks that some sudoku books are full of. A number of the puzzles had some very interesting logic sequences which were fun.
The secret to Samurai Sudoku is the central puzzle; solve it and the puzzle reduces to 4 independent sudoku puzzles. I believe that in most cases, once the central puzzle was solved, the remaining puzzles were much too easy. The author typically puts 30+ clues in the outer puzzles. I really think they should have been reduced to lower 20 or high teens.
Nonetheless, I consider this a book worth purchasing, it took me just under two months to finish the book in off hours and at bedtime, and how can you go wrong with two months of fun for only $9.99.
this book is for the more advanced sudoku player-lots of fun This is a great book. Ever since I did book one, I was immediately hooked. It is great. I really like these bigger Sudoku puzzles, since the regular ones are a little too quick to solve. This book has enough puzzles to last you a looong time. The first book was great and this one looks like it's keeping up the same quality! Very good! Sudoku is the number-placing puzzle that is spreading across the world, engaging the minds of people of all ages. The rules are simple, you don't need to know any mathematics, all you need is logic. Samurai Sudoku puzzles are like traditional Sudoku puzzles but with five interlocking Sudoku grids. This book contains 100 of these massive puzzles, including solutions. All the Samurai Sudoku puzzles in this book are symmetric. The rule is the same: Each row, column and 3x3 box in each puzzle grid must contain the numbers 1-9 only once. All puzzles in this book are hard, however the puzzles get progressively harder and the puzzles at the end may be considered very hard. This book is for those who feel ordinary Sudoku puzzles are too easy or too quick to solve and want more challenging puzzles. These puzzles can take hours to solve and if you solve two of these every week this book will last you a year! Have fun! Rerations < 100 Samurai Sudoku Puzzles 2 >

customer 's review (Disappointing implementation)
(Sudoku-Play at Joe's)
(moderately decent game, horribly inconvenient)
(Great Brain Food!) I bought this game after looking at several choices on store shelves, and deciding this was the best choice I bought it. I immediately discovered that my choice was a poor one.
On the surface, this looks like a very capable version of computerized Sudoku, which is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something with LOTS of puzzles, some variety in difficulty levels, the ability to print, and an intuitive GUI for playing. This version does all four of these. For that, it is to be commended - it has the features most serious players will desire.
That said, the implementation and additional features make this game a less than ideal choice.
One of the most annoying features is that it requires the CD to be in the drive when playing, and for some that is inconvenient.
More of an aggravation, though, are the sounds for the game. There is background music that serves only to be distracting. There also happens to be a voice element to announce the numbers as they are placed - the voice sounds very much like you would imagine for an anime schoolgirl that's entirely too happy for her own good. I cut the speakers for that one. With no sound, gameplay is a lot more pleasant and is acceptable.
The game allows the player to show mistakes during play. HOWEVER, once that setting is turned on, it is not possible to turn it off except when there is no game being played. For players that are learning to play, this is fine, but once a player knows the lay of the land, either the current game needs to be quit in order to toggle this setting, or it needs to be turned off at initial launch.
In the box with the CD was a bright orange card that stated that there was an update to the game available to patch a problem with printing. While I realize that this likely went in the box after the golden image was sent to the duplicator, it still is annoying to find that your brand new game is already outdated.
I looked for another Sudoku game the very next day and found a better one with more features, a better interface, and a smaller price tag. If you want a good Sudoku game for your computer, I cannot recommend Play at Joe's Sudoku Challenge unless there are no other options available. Your money is better spent on other choices. the games cannot be identified so that you can save them and do later. I like to print out the blank game, then print the possibilities and then see the answers. I tossed this product as unusable for me. Play at Joe's Sudoku is a moderately decent version of Sudoku, not half as nice as the shareware version I had downloaded. I bought this version because I wanted a CD, rather than paying for a software key that could get lost. Boy did I miss the point! This game REQUIRES the CD to start. Who does it that way today and why? I like to play games like this while I'm busy with other tasks, like burning copies of home movies for relatives. Unless I remember to start the game first, I'm out of luck. And I've got to keep that CD on my desk, available in case I want to play it. In other words, I DON'T play it, I'm back to playing Solitare. I spent $20 on a totally worthless game. I got hooked on Sudoku when I traveled to the UK on business. Everyone there was doing puzzles daily. I got caught up in the madness! These puzzles are great for keeping your mind sharp and are a great exercise for school children to learn logic and deduction. Not only am I hooked now, but my wife, 9 yr old, 12 yr old and 16 yr old all take a daily dose of Sudoku.
I had bought Sudoku software while in the UK, but the puzzles were not true Sudoku puzzles- meaning that they fudged the puzzle and many of the puzzles could not be completed correctly. The Play at Joe's puzzles are formulated in the same way as the Japanese masters have done for centuries. Play at Joe's Sudoku Challenge is authentic and addictive!
The Sudoku Challenge is a great game for anyone who loves crosswords, word searches, mahjongg, brainteasers, solitaire or any addictive game. You can even print out puzzles to take along for your commute. Highly recommended game!
Sudoku Challenge is the Japanese numbers game that's driving everyone mad. We guarantee that once you've tried one Sudoku puzzle, you'll be hooked! The deceptively simple goal of Sudoku is to fill in the missing numbers in a 9x9 grid. All it takes is some brains and concentration. Maybe it sounds easy, since it doesn't require any calculating or special math skills -- but trust us, this challenge to your logic and reasoning will keep you busy for hours! customer 's review (Excellent sudoku game for most players) Sudoku puzzles are a fun distraction and many, many people have jumped on the bandwagon. Even some newspapers have started including Sudoku puzzles in their daily publications, and bookshelves are lined with book after book of Sudoku puzzle collections. Being unwilling to buy an endless supply of books, I picked up this Sudoku program, which came with a Kakuro program as a bonus.
This Sudoku program is user friendly, pleasant on the eyes, and it does not annoy you with incessant chatter and distracting tunes. The interface is straightforward and clean and it allows you to just play your game - it stays out of your way and it is there to offer help when you want it.
It does have some helps it can offer. You can get pencil hints, or you can check for errors. These hints come at a price, though - this particular Sudoku keeps score based on your solve time, and every request for hints reduces your score appreciably.
There are three difficulty settings, from beginner to hard. The hard setting will challenge the average player but a strong player may find it to be insufficient in terms of difficulty. This is typical of most Sudoku programs though. There are definitely better programs out there if getting really hard puzzles is the goal. The beginner setting is very appropriate for anyone just getting started, though.
I tried the included Kakuro and I did not care for it. The implementation was fine and it was similar in design to Sudoku, so the problem was not the application. The problem is that I do not like Kakuro as a game. I cannot blame the game manufacturer for that.
If you want a good Sudoku program that has a pleasant interface and a good supply of puzzles, this is a good choice. It is priced right, it is a straightforward implementation and it has a very nice interface. If you happen to like Kakuro too, this program is for you. Sure, there are much more challenging implementations of Sudoku and if that's what you need, then take a look at some of the other offerings, but this one is an unbeatable value for what you get. customer 's review (So-so game) This game is hard to use. If you want pencil marks, it just puts all of them in. This basically gives you the answer as all you have to do is look for a square with only one number in it. I'm also disappointed that you have to insert the CD to play the game. This means that I will not be using it much. The only thing that saved the rating is the Mahjong, which is the main reason I bought it. Valusoft's earlier versions of Mahjong were better and easier to use in my opinion. There has to be better versions of Sudoku and Mahjong available.
