customer 's review (Electronic Sudoku Game)
(Poor quality/hard to see screen)
(Okay but not great)
(Sudoku) This is the worst product that I've purchased on the net. I purchased it for my wife. She's a HUGE Suduko fan. The game has gathered so much dust and dirt, it's about to start growing grass! I bought this for my dad. It looked stylish, had a light, etc. Once it came I realized the screen was very pale, and it made it extremely hard to read. In order to navigate you had to move in a grid, you couldn't just point to a square. The game also made noise independently, without being in use, and while OFF. I ended up returning it to the store. I give it a two, because it has nice options for levels, and a simple to use design.
It works as advertised but the screen is still hard to read. With the back light on it's better but the numbers are broken up enough that it's sometimes hard to tell a 8 from a 3 for example. Using reading glasses help but not much. I bought this to use while traveling and if your moving around much as when traveling in a car, the screen is just to small to maintain focus. The varying intensities of light when riding down the road play off the highly reflective screen enough to drive you crazy. Sitting at home in the easy chair, it works fine. Using it is a challenge the first time so make sure you read the instructions and keep them handy.
I don't find anything special about this product. I'm pretty happy with my purchase of Sudoku. It was a little complicated at first but after reading thru the directions several times I was able to play the game.Other than the problems I had getting started the game is everything I expected. This electronic Sudoku game has electronic controls, unlimited puzzlers, millions of test questions, three different backlight colors, time and date functions and an alarm setting. Includes pen for entering your numbers. Take Sudoku with you everywhere! Measures 3" x 4.75" x .75". Requires 2 "AAA" batteries (not included). Rerations < Electronic Sudoku Game >

(Highly recommended)
(Very Challenging) This book is great for kids who want to learn sudoku and it keeps them occupied. This is a great book on Sudoku for kids. The book includes 150 puzzles. The puzzles are of various sizes: 4x4, 6x6, and 9x9. The solutions are at the end of the book. There are four levels of difficulty for the puzzles.
The first four pages in this book are dedicated for strategy, hints, rules, or tips. All the puzzles in the book are Classic Sudoku (with numbers). There are no Alphabet Sudoku (with letters) or Symbol Sudoku (with shapes and symbols) like the two books "Kindergarten Sudoku" and "Super Sudoku for Kids".
It's a good book to introduce kids to sudoku. It starts off very easy and then gradually becomes more challenging.
Sudoku has taken America by storm! Now kids can enjoy the puzzle that keeps their parents' minds racing and pencils sharpened. This edition, designed for children 8 and up, begins with a sudoku lesson from Will Shortz and very easy 4 x 4 grids to warm up. Then young solvers advance to more challenging 6 x 6 grids and finally tradition 9 x 9 sudoku puzzles.
Features: · 150 all-new sudoku puzzles · Four difficulty levels including smaller "kid grids" · Fun commentary and illustrations · Edited by legendaryNew York Timescrossword editor Will Shortz · Big grids with lots of space for easy solving Rerations < Will Shortz Presents The Monster Book of Sudoku for Kids: 150 Fun Puzzles (Will Shortz Presents...) >

(Perfect!)
(Killer Sudoku: 101 Puzzles)
(Bravo)
(Great primer but impossible puzzles) great group of puzzles! these are "thinkers" and not the trivial puzzles you find in some of the other collections. However I did find two puzzles in this book with unsolvable rectangles (and therefore there is no solution to the puzzle). I've been doing Killer Sudokus for more than a year and enjoy them far more than traditional sudoku. This is a very nice collection with a range of difficulties that excludes both the easiest and very hardest I've ever seen. (Nothing as hard as the "Mind Bending" found on a popular killer sudoku website--and nothing quite as easy as the "easy" puzzles on that site either.) I'm nearly through this one and will either go back with a big eraser to start over again or buy another copy!
And: if you've never done Killer Sudokus before, it includes a little primer on the tricks for doing this kind of puzzle at the front of the book. A killer Sudoko book that really kills your brain. It's very addictive so, for your own safety, don't do the puzzle before going to bed. It may keep you awake the whole night. I started to do Killer Sudoku a few months ago, and became hooked. Of many puzzles I tried on books or online, this one is the best. It gives a very good introduction, and ease you into the games by giving you some Easy ones first and then progresses into 'Cool', 'Thinker', 'Brain', and the hardest 'IQ'. A total of 101 puzzles. It has been weeks now, and I am still doing a couple of them a week - enjoying tremendously as I go along.
There are good reasons why the puzzles are so enjoyable - particularly in the advanced sections. The author has explored the wide variety of solving skills of Killer Sudoku. Because of the math involved, numerous scenarios are possible for designing and solving interesting Killer Sudoku puzzles, I found myself discovering novel approaches every once in a while as I progress into the harder puzzles. Such discovery is pure joy, which we addicts really appreciate. I came to the realization that, unlike the classical Sudoku, the solving techniques in Killer Sudoku are much more diversified, and many are revealed during the mind mending processes of solving (and designing).
The author has also seemingly put to a lot of thoughts into the design of the puzzles. There are puzzles with unique symmetrical patterns, with unique approaches. For example, in one puzzle, the corners may be solved relatively quickly, and the center takes a lot of mind twisting and pencil works. Then there is another one, in which the first and last three columns are all filled up quickly, leaving the center three columns completely blank smiling teasingly at your face. This one, I wrote down 'Bravo' after solving it.
The puzzles have apparently been well tested and selected. I cannot say the same with some other Sudoku books.
A superb book. I look forward to a sequel with only hard puzzles of the same quality. I've completed the Mensa Nasty series of regular Sudoku, Collins's Killer Sudoku Book 1, and all levels of Kakuros that appear in the backs of other books I've bought, so I'd like to think I'm fairly skilled. But I got NOWHERE in this book. As another reviewer says, pretty much the only technique available to you is Rule of 45. Very minimal opportunity to use cages, I/O's, or significant number combinations. I assumed there had to be some major breakthrough technique that I wasn't aware of and searched everywhere on the web to find it. But evidently the only techniques that exist are the ones explained very clearly in the beginning of this book. But buy it for that reason alone, and then get Collins's Killer Sudoku book. You'll have much more fun.
Introduced byThe Times, the British publisher who pioneered the sudoku craze, the“killer sudoku” poses a double challenge: the basic rules of sudoku still apply, but puzzles initially have no numbers showing. All that is known is the sum of the numbers inside irregular boxes, called cages, in which the classic 9 x 9 sudoku grid is subdivided.Killer Sudokucontains 101 of these brain-busters grouped into six levels of difficulty. The introduction explains the basic techniques needed to solve these new versions of the world's most popular number puzzle. Rerations < Killer Sudoku: 101 Puzzles >

customer 's review (Cute But Frustrating -- NOT For Sudoku Lovers) Picked up this cute device for about $7 at Walmart (7/16/2006) -- I thought it would be fun to try at that price.
If you're not already into Sudoku, this device will turn you off it forever; if you are into Sudoku, you'll simply find the device frustrating:
The screen is generally quite difficult to read -- the resolution is poor and the screen requires just the perfect tilt in just the perfect light to see the entries without seeing the lcd numbers in the blank squares.
The sound is cheesy and annoying, reminding me of an old game of Pong.
But the real killer is that it doesn't allow one to mark possibles (typically shown as small numbers in each cell, e.g. done with a shift-click on the USAToday sudoku website, or with a simple mouseclick on the shareware UniSudoku). This means, at least for most people, that the device can be used only for the simplest sudoku play, unless you want to track possibles on a separate piece of paper, which ruins the point of having the electronic sudoku game player.
So, the device will be frustrating for just about anyone, and is certainly not something you'd want to give as a gift. It's fun, challenging&addicting!
For ages 8&up.
