Sudoku is a logic-based number placement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 boxes (also called blocks or regions) contains the digits from 1 to 9 only one time each. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid.

(Bought as a gift)
(Interesting product)
(Difficult to use)
(Great Sudoku Game!) I bought this for my husband who won't go near a computer. I was very surprised when he actually started playing the Sudoku. It is a hit with him. I bought this as a gift for someone who LOVES Sudoku. I really can't rate it based on first hand experience but I know she loved the gift and it works great. The only downfall is it doesn't have a backlight. How are you suppose to play this in the car at night? We have enjoyed Sudoku for some time now but never via a game format such as this. We're still learning how to operate this game but having lots of fun doing it. I have been searching for the perfect handheld sudoku game and this is not it. I found it very difficult to see the numbers without a backlight even with my reading glasses. Also I would perfer a stylus pen instead of having to scroll around the screen to enter a number. I do like the idea of being able to use a dry erase pen to mark off numbers, but I couldn't even see those. Still searching! This game is great for several reasons: 1) The screen is large and easy to read; 2) The included dry erease pen allows the user to make notes on the screen (a must for any serious Sudoku player); 3) The game has four skill levels; 4) Each game is timed so the player can track his best and average times.
It's a fun game that has a lot of great features. Challenge yourself with the ultimate puzzle - Sudoku. This electronic version features thousands of puzzles, doodle features, undo and hint buttons. There are three difficulty levels and a timer for challenging play. Choose from 6 x 6 and 9 x 9 playing boards. Requires two "AAA" batteries (included). Rerations < Big Screen Sudoku >

customer 's review (Not a very good gift)
(Sticky, but not in the right places.)
(Fun Cube) I got this for my little brother's birthday and he seemed to enjoy it at first, however, he later became obsessed with solving the cube. He grew increasingly more distant and eventually stopped talking to friends and family. It got to the point where he was down to 75 pounds because he refused to eat; While he was furiously twisting the diabloical block, it broke apart, sending numbered shrapnel across the room killing both our parents. Oblivious to our parents life-less bodies, he locked himself in his room, determined to repair the cube and complete it's unholy puzzle. I could only hear animal-like howls and shrieks through the door. I haven't seen my brother in twelve years. I'm selling our house; I'll probably just brick up the doorway and plaster over it.
This item is dangerous and should be banned from sale in the US. I really like my "Soduku" cube. I highly recommend it for its select audience.
Negatives: *It is not really soduku. This doesn't really bother me, as the cube puzzle is more interesting to me than the math-fad. If you're into soduku, and have never solved a normal Rubik's Cube, this is not for you. Get the normal Rubik's Cube first. * The twisting is pretty stiff, and I have not yet found a good way of loosening it. * It is a little weaker than a true Rubik's Cube, so you should be careful about popping the pieces off the core. That can be fixed, but keep it in mind. * The number-5 center stickers cover a hole where the screws to the core go, and that hole makes the stickers slip off way too easily. I had serious trouble solving the puzzle the first time, because my 5-stickers weren't properly oriented. This is easily fixed with a little extra glue.
Positives: * A great version of the Rubik's Cube, where piece orientation is introduced for more complexity. Veteran cube solvers should enjoy the slow-down because of this.
The above single positive outweighs all the other negatives, so if you have solved the standard Rubik's Cube, or know someone who has, this is a wonderful product. This is one of the cheaper cubes. You have to be careful when you turn or you can break it. I have a few of these cheaper style cubes, and I've broken one already. I've made sure to be careful with this one. Lubricate this cube and you'll be OK. It's definitely a new twist on the Rubik's cube. Pay attention to the orientation before you scramble. It's tricky to re-assemble. I found this to be harder than a regular Rubik's cube. 3-D Sudokube. Newspaper Sudoku not tough enough for you? You show-off. (Just What I Wanted)
(Good for the price) Well, I've gone through quite a few sudoku books and thought I was hot stuff. Then Ferocious Sudoku book assaulted my ego. Well, if you're looking to step up to the big leagues, this is the book; I haven't found a tougher one. This book gives you 100 "difficult" puzzles and 100 "very challenging" puzzles. Although there's no official grading system for Sudoku puzzles, I've done about half the puzzles in this book and I would say those descriptions are accurate. The "difficult" puzzles are hard enough to make me think but not so hard that I've had to use notations to solve them, and the "very challenging" puzzles usually require me to make notations and I've even gotten hung up on a couple of them.
The book is big enough so that the puzzles can be easily read yet small enough that it will fit in your laptop case. It's also very fairly priced for the number of puzzles you get. These puzzles aren't as hard as I had hoped, but are better than most books. Well worth it, and will pass the time as desired.
Are you tough enough? Take on this collection of 200 devilishly difficult sudoku puzzles! Includes: -200 hard puzzles -Perfect portable size -Big grids for easy solving Rerations < Will Shortz Presents Ferocious Sudoku: 200 Hard Puzzles >

(Great tips, so so layout)
(good and bad)
(Good Info -- Crappy Book)
(my wife is a suduko addict.) My husband became addicted to Sudoku in Summer 2008 and soon thereafter infected me. We work (individually) on the puzzle published daily in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. This book has a wealth of information about analysis and techniques including some for puzzle situations so rare and exotic they might never be encountered in a lifetime. The explanations are very clear and easy to follow but the book has shortcomings as to format and layout. I would much have preferred to have the explanation of a particular diagram on the same page with the graphic itself rather than having to flip the page back and forth to follow the steps. The book also has hundreds of puzzles to work on, for those for whom once a day is just not enough. The tips alone are worth the price of the book, but the layout was a bit disappointing. The puzzles are a bit too small. I like the half page size at least. It would also have been helpful to include a cross reference between some of the more difficult techniques to the puzzles which contain them. I'm with the other people who described the problem with the binding of this book: it's poor. Just like another reviewer, within the first couple of weeks, the binding started to come apart, and I've been handling it carefully to keep pages from coming out, which will begin soon, I fear. And it wasn't through any rough handling on my part: I handle books like precious objects, with a lot of care and respect. The binding STILL failed very quickly.
The content is pretty good, and I'm learning a lot of advanced solving techniques, however I'm noticing that the book is a little short on examples of some of the more advanced patterns, and variations on those patterns. For example, the first end-of-chapter problem in the chapter on Forcing Chains and Grid Coloring had me totally stumped, despite the fact that I knew that one of the variations on the chapter's patterns of XY-Wing, XYZ-Wing, and Turbot Fish had to be present. Finally, I consulted sudopedia.org, and lo, they offered two subtypical examples of XY-Wing, the first of which was covered in the book, the second of which was not. I'd spent perhaps 6 hours staring at that one puzzle, and after reading of subtype two at sudopedia, I spotted the example of it in the puzzle after about 10 seconds!
Basically, I think the book could be improved by having not only solutions for the end of chapter problems, which it has, but also highlighting of the critical pattern in the candidates, at the critical juncture where the special pattern taught in that chapter must be located to enable you to finish the puzzle (without guessing), in case the reader just had too much difficulty finding it, as I did. Also more elaboration on some of the more complex patterns and how to go about searching for them would be useful.
Aside from those few shortcomings, this book is pretty good! I can't say I'm sorry I bought it. But it could be better. This is the type of book that one will regularly refer to in order to brush up on very advanced solving techniques. Sadly, the construction of the binding is quite poor and after a short while I had more than a few pages fall out. Probably should order another copy, but I hate to reward shoddy construction with even more sales.
Probably the best advanced Sudoku puzzle solving reference though; if you buy, treat it more gingerly than you'd think necessary. I have never knowingly done a seduco myself but my wife is hooked. She says this book has brought her to a new level. Now she is going back and trying the ones she had put aside because they were too hard.
Here it comes: a revolution in sudoku solving! This is by far the most complete guide to cracking these addictive puzzles ever produced, with tricks even the experts won’t know. While most books might have a few pages of introduction before proceeding straight to the sudokus, this one covers it all. Hidden pairs, naked pairs, X-wings, jellyfish, squirmbag, bivalue and bilocation graphs, turbot fish, grid coloring, chains: every single one is here, and much more too, including the exclusive Gordonian logic methods (Gordonian rectangles and Gordonian polygons) that will turn even the hardest puzzles into a breeze. Of course, there are hundreds of sudoku for practice. A very special addition: a reprint of the very first sudoku ever published in 1979, fromDell Pencil Puzzles and Word Gamesmagazine! (Best tough Sudoku book)
(I love the pain!)
(Nail biting and time consuming)
(Tough puzzles!) I enjoy this book, but strongly suggest not buying it unless you have exhausted/outgrown the other Sudoku books. This is the hardest book I have found by far. I didn't work through levels 1 - 3 (probably should have). The next hardest book I have is "Even Higher Sudoku". The latter might be good to try before moving on to this book. This is the only Sudoku book I've found where I can't do over half of the puzzles without notes. So if you want to tax your brain a bit and know about Gordian Polygons then this is the sudoku book to buy. Makes the "black belt" and "ultimate ninja" books look easy by comparison. Still all logic and no guessing required. As someone who searches for seriously difficult sudoku, I love this book. The puzzles are all very hard, but still require a variety of solving methods, some of which I find approachable, and others of which are truly painful, at least for me. I agree with another reviewer that it would be nice to have "speaking" solutions, that is, solutions that explain how the puzzle was solved, but solving methods vary so much by player that this is probably only a dream. There are truly no linear solution methods, which is what makes sudoku so attractive.
Compared to the many other books that claim to offer very hard sudoku, this one stands way out as telling it like it is.
I criticised the "Mensa Guide" book for its fragile binding and tiny grids, so I have to award big points for the spiral binding and large grids of this book. These are some really, really challenging sudoku. It would be nice in the next edition if we could have some descriptions on how to solve using the more complicated techniques. It would also be nice if the answers included reference to which of the more difficult techniques were used to solve them. Mostly very tough puzzles, that (like book #3) lived up to the books' name. We're very h |
