customer 's review (Great execution, but not enough small tiles)
(hands on sudoku fun) I just bought one of these yesterday, and was thrilled with it until I tried to do a more difficult puzzle (from a Saturday paper). That's when I realized that the supply of small tiles is completely inadequate. They supply 9 of each number, which is nowhere near enough. I ended up making little cardboard numbers (which were a *huge* pain to use); counting up afterward, I found that I had made a total of 72, including 20 of one number. So there should be at least 3 times as many of the small ones as they give you.
I looked to see if I could get more from the company, but the web site listed on the box no longer exists. I like the wooden box and number squares. I don't enjoy the paper and pencil sudoku and if I don't finish the game in the paper right away it gets lost. This game looks good on my coffee talbe and I can leave it and come back to it later. I purchaed this as a gift and one for myself. Wooden Sudoku Board Puzzle. Now you can solve any Sudoku puzzle without constant erasing by using this board with its included tiles. Four self adhesive board buffers. Velvet storage pouch. A great gift idea for the Sudoku fan. Dimensions: 10.25 x 15.5 x .75 inches. For a larger view of this item, please click on the picture(s). The number puzzle that's been rocketed to a worldwide craze now comes in a form great for younger minds! Do You Sudoku? For kids uses six animal symbols on a grid composed of six 3x2 boxes (instead of the nine 3x3 boxes that use the digits 1 through 9 employed by traditional Sudoku puzzles). But the principle is precisely the same: no one of each of the six cartoon critters can show up more than once in the same row, column, or 3x2 box. Great for discovering patters and developing logical thinking skills! Contains 55 puzzles and 24 re-usable vinyl stickers. Ages 6 and up. Rerations < Do You Sudoku? for Kids! >

(A favorite&truly addictive!)
(I didn't find these to be difficult at all)
(Expands your technique)
(No easy puzzles) I look for Sudoku books with three qualities. First, I want puzzles that have only one solution. If I find a book that includes puzzles with more than one solution I discard it. Two, I want books with grids large enough that I can enter candidates in the cells. Third, I want books with challenging puzzles. Many of the descriptions on Amazon omit such info.
I prefer grids that are about 4½" x 4 ½". The grids in my newspaper are about 3" x 3" (which is tolerable because not many candidates are needed).
New York Post Su Doku Difficult (Wayne Gould): The puzzles have only one solution; the grids are about 3½" x 3 ½". There are 200 puzzles in this book. Gould does not need to make "pencil marks" and assumes the rest of us don't. Hence, small grids for difficult puzzles. These puzzles seemed more logical and intentionally designed than most. It's my favorite Sudoku book so far... I enjoy puzzles of a level that is medium "difficult", which is just what the book purported to be. Let me start by saying that I thoroughly enjoy killer sudoku problems, and I have quit doing normal sudoku. This book was given to me as a gift, and I breezed right through it. I did not find these puzles to be difficult at all. If you are used to sudoku puzzles, you will find that these can pretty much be solved using basic principles, and they won't present much of a challenge to you.
Bottom Line: If you are just getting into sudoku, you might find this book worthwhile, but if you've been doing them for awhile, I doubt you'll find this book to be a challenge at all. Difficult? Yes, but not impossible and very educational.
I've been utterly addicted to these puzzles for over a year now, and they truly are absorbing. I've never read anything about the technique involved other than the bare essentials underlying the game. Everything I've learned beyond that has been self discovered by doing puzzles of different levels. I've worked on books like Mensa Sudoku (Mensa), Sudoku Easy to Hard Presented by Will Shortz, Volume 3: 100 Wordless Crossword Puzzles (Sudoku Easy to Hard), and others, and have learned a lot over the past several months.
Generally speaking, the process boils down to elimination and selection of the obvious for easy puzzles. These are very easy to do and would be a great point to get younger children started on them; it really does develop a sense of number and place. Simple basic logic is used at intermediate levels, and here too, it would be good for kids, especially junior high level because it introduces patterns that have to be thought out logically to eliminate some of the possibilities. After that it becomes pattern recognition at higher levels, and the logic that is involved is much more complex. The most astonishing pattern is that sometimes found in the "fiendish," "evil," or "diabolical" level puzzles, because the answer is so counter intuitive.
Taking this into account, the reader will be able to recognize his or her own level and whether or not they're ready for something more. The New York Post Difficult Su Doku is as represented, difficult, but it offers a good opportunity to expand what you already know from the previous levels. I was amazed at how much I learned and how rapidly I put it to use.
I started out rather poorly at the beginning, frequently getting to what I thought would be the end of one only to find I'd goofed up somewhere. Sometimes I started over several times on the same puzzle before I got it right. By the time I was just under half way through the book, however, I found myself doing the puzzles as rapidly as I do easier ones. It all comes down to pattern recognition. Give it a try and don't give up.
Having become impatient with most sudoku book that devote a third of their space to easy puzzles, I was happy to find this one that has medium to hard puzzles. Through solving them I learned more about how to solve sudoku and have moved on to the author's 'fiendish' book.
200 New Difficult Puzzles -- They Are Not Going to Be Easy But You Are Ready Su Doku, "the crossword without words," comes with a warning: it is seriously addictive. You don't need to be a mathematical genius to solve these puzzles; it is simply a question of logic and a little patience. (Not for the faint of heart)
(killer sudoku)
(Perfect!)
(Killer Sudoku: 101 Puzzles) This is the best Killer Sudoku book I've found. DJAPE is great. I've bought it 3 times now. Revenge of Killer Sudoku is also very good, but even harder than this one. For me, if the puzzles aren't difficult, there's no use doing them. Yes, these are extremely difficult puzzles (beginners start elsewhere!). When I first started this book, I thought they went too far. However, I plugged away at them, discovered new methods along the way, and slowly but surely improved my skill level until I could almost do them all. Yeah, the highest "IQ" level puzzles are ridiculous - I could only solve about half of them... but I like being challenged. I hate to reach a certain level and think there's no more room for improvement (except for speed I suppose), so many other logic puzzles have become too boring for me now. Another thing I like about killer sudoku is that you'll know sooner that you've made a mistake. Ever do a plain sudoku and find at the VERY end that you went wrong? You erase the whole thing and start over. That rarely happens with killer sudoku. With the added layer of sum cages, you'll realize you're off more quickly. Many times I'll think I'm stuck on one, then come back the next day and see something I missed before. That's what I love about killer sudoku. They're so much more complicated, and for me, more interesting. great group of puzzles! these are "thinkers" and not the trivial puzzles you find in some of the other collections. However I did find two puzzles in this book with unsolvable rectangles (and therefore there is no solution to the puzzle). I've been doing Killer Sudokus for more than a year and enjoy them far more than traditional sudoku. This is a very nice collection with a range of difficulties that excludes both the easiest and very hardest I've ever seen. (Nothing as hard as the "Mind Bending" found on a popular killer sudoku website--and nothing quite as easy as the "easy" puzzles on that site either.) I'm nearly through this one and will either go back with a big eraser to start over again or buy another copy!
And: if you've never done Killer Sudokus before, it includes a little primer on the tricks for doing this kind of puzzle at the front of the book. A killer Sudoko book that really kills your brain. It's very addictive so, for your own safety, don't do the puzzle before going to bed. It may keep you awake the whole night.
Introduced byThe Times, the British publisher who pioneered the sudoku craze, the“killer sudoku” poses a double challenge: the basic rules of sudoku still apply, but puzzles initially have no numbers showing. All that is known is the sum of the numbers inside irregular boxes, called cages, in which the classic 9 x 9 sudoku grid is subdivided.Killer Sudokucontains 101 of these brain-busters grouped into six levels of difficulty. The introduction explains the basic techniques needed to solve these new versions of the world's most popular number puzzle. Rerations < Killer Sudoku: 101 Puzzles >

customer 's review(Of course you can pencil-in candidates) (Not as good as the original) (Not as versitile as other versions of SuDoKu) (Perfect computerized Sudoku) (Good, but not great) The review given here by Professor says that Classic Sudoku does not allow you to "pencil-in" the possibilites for each entry. He says that the program does that for you. This is not true. You can add your own possible numbers which appear in a smaller size than the final one. The game does not have that automatic "fill-in" feature he mentions--you'll have to do the work yourself. Professor must have been reviewing another Sudoku product and by mistake included it here.
I am very happy with my purchase. This software is easy to use, it has several levels of difficulty...it fulfilled my expectations. With the original version, multiple games could be printed on one sheet of paper to complete at your leisure. In this version, more trees are killed because you only have the ability to print one game per one sheet of paper. Other than that, this game software is what I anticipated and I am satisfied with the product.I was very disappointed with this CD, as I was hoping for the ability to add and erase my own pencil notes rather than only having the choice of the program adding them or not. This one is the best of what I've tried. It allows you space to put in trials before actually entering the answer. Best of all it doesn't clutter up the program with a lot of extraneous graphics that slow down the program and shrink the playing area. However, it does have nice graphics and a choice of backgrounds so it is a pleasant environment. There are 4 puzzle levels: easy, medium, hard and impossible. There are 5 "themes", but these are only background frames. There are settings for error-checking and timing. The numbers are large and boldface, easy to see/read. There is a "flash me" setting for hints if you get stuck. There is no annoying "theme song" to be silenced. The only "sound effects" are beeps for errors and at completion of the puzzle, but it would be nice to have some kind music or sound when a puzzle is finished correctly. (The bells-drums-shouts at puzzle end on the USAToday and Washington Post online Sudoku games are fun -- a sort of Pavlovian trigger which makes one want to solve another puzzle!) You get good value from this CD version.Sudoku is the Japanese numbers game that's driving everyone mad. We guarantee that once you've tried one Sudoku puzzle, you'll be hooked! The deceptively simple goal of Sudoku is to fill in the missing numbers in a 9x9 grid. All it takes is some brains and concentration. Maybe it sounds easy, since it doesn't require any calculating or special math skills -- but trust us, this challenge to your logic and reasoning will keep you busy for hours!
