Professor Fuji's Sudoku shows you how to start playing and solving Sudoku puzzles. Then there are hundreds of Sudoku puzzles to continue challenging your brain. It's addictive fun. It would be nice to explain the ancient derivatives of this game with an exotic Asian name but its origins are relatively recent. Originally called simply Number Place, the first puzzle was created by Howard Garns, a freelance puzzle constructor, in 1979. The puzzle was first published in New York in the late 1970s by the specialist puzzle publisher Dell Magazines in its magazine Dell Pencil Puzzles and Word Games, under the title Number Place. The puzzle was introduced in Japan by Nikoli in the paper Monthly Nikolist in April 1984. The puzzle was named by Kaji Maki, the president of Nikoli. At a later date, the name was abbreviated to Sudoku (pronounced sue-do-koo; su = number, doku = single); In 1986, Nikoli introduced two innovations which guaranteed the popularity of the puzzle: the numberof givens was restricted to no more than 30 and puzzles became "symmetrical" (meaning the givens were distributed in rotationally symmetric cells). It is now published in mainstream Japanese periodicals. Rerations < Professor Fuji's Sudoku (Jewel Case) >

customer 's review (HORRIBLE!!!)
(LCD Sucks) I purchased this item from THE SAVE WAVE and not only did they misrepresent this item (they have the cheap product on this site NOW, it originally showed it as digital w/a stylus pen)I paid for 2 and only received 1 and not only was I charged for 2 but it was the wrong item!! The one they sent (pictured NOW) is so hard to use; the screen is too hard to see (and I'M 33 with 20/20 vision) the buttons are so small that unless you had a prodigy child of 3 months old you can't possibly push the correct buttons being that they are so small, and it is so cheaply made, I purchased this as a Christmas present but would NEVER give it. I would be completely embarrassed! Sudoku is a great game but not in this form or from this Seller. My advice? Pass this one by, I went to WALMART tonight and bought the real deal...backlight, 2 stylis pens, over a million puzzles with the capability of downloading puzzles all for only $14.98. Wish I would have went there first. PS- The Savewave admitted that they made the mistake and told me that they would send the CORRECT items. That was three weeks ago and after calling several times and receiving an automated voice mail and then sending two e-mails, still no response. I give both this product and its seller a -10. I thought it was going to light up all kinds, but when i recieved the item and turned off all the lights to see how well the LCD was in fact i could hardly tell that it was even on. I could see any numbers on the screen which made it pointless to have it in the dark if the LCD doesn't even work properly. Also when using it in the light you have to face the screen flat in order to see the numbers at all, you are not able to look directly at the face. I think this is very upsetting and wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Our Super Electronic Handheld Sudoku puzzles are all top of the line. Each model includes over 1,000,000 puzzles built in. We use a super high resolution large LCD display for easy viewing with Indiglo backlight built into four different models (sk-838, ,sk-888, sk-898, sk-8011) for playing in the dark. 3-5 Levels of play (depending on the model) - the number of givens goes down with each higher level. Each Sudoku game comes in sealed packages with instruction booklet. Please see below for exact model specifications, colors and dimensions. sk-898 Features: Size: 4.6" x 2.8" x 0.8" Screen: 2.1" x 1.9" NightGlow display Game function: 3 levels of game play: easy, medium, difficult Functions: time display, auto power off Power supply: 2 x AAA (not included) Color: silver Sudoku is a logic-based placement puzzle, also known as Number Place in the United States. The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numeral from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9 x 9 grid made up of 3 x 3 sub-grids (called regions), starting with various numerals given in some cells (the givens). Each row, column and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Solving the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Its grid layout is reminiscent of other newspaper puzzles like crosswords and chess problems. Although first published in 1979, Sudoku became popular in Japan in 1986 and took the United Kingdom by storm. Rerations < Electronic Handheld Sudoku Game with NightGlow >

(Brown Belt Sudoku)
(Not quite hard)
(practice makes perfect) Do not confuse the Sudoku (Martial Arts) books written by Frank Longo with the ones written by Michael Rios. Michael Rios' puzzles are much easier to complete; they require no "little numbers" and are not nearly as challenging as those written by Frank Longo.
There is nothing wrong with the puzzles in this book, they are just not challenging enough to keep me interested. I will have to pass this book along to a friend and order Frank Longo's Second Degree Brown Belt Sudoku. Excellent condition and not used previously. Delivery was well prior to anticipated delivery date. Will utilize this vendor for future purchases. This is a very good Sudoku. Just right for someone who is pretty savvy about Sudoku. "Not easy but not really hard. It is a step above the Green Belt which is what you'd want in the progression." Thus saith my husband, doer of Sudokus. I did all the puzzles in the "Brown Belt" book, although I had to skip a few and "cheated" on a few more by looking at the answers. When the book was nearly finished I was hoping to get the "black belt" version for Christmas, but a friend gave me a second copy of this Brown Belt one. I was amazed to find that the first few I could do using the method I use to start each puzzle (starting with the nines, I look for a 9 in two cubes and try to figure out the missing one in the third cube) without doing my normal horizontal, then vertical, then cube by cube. I was surprised to find that the puzzles do get harder, even though they don't seem to. Now I'm wanting to move on to the Black Belt Black Belt Sudoku (Martial Arts Sudoku) book, but the reviews are pretty abysmal. Oh well, I'll give it a try anyway.... [bragging rights: I do mine in ink with no side notations :)]
With a separate sudoku book for every level, all puzzle lovers can play this wildly popular, incredibly addictive game that's appearing in major newspapers all over! Taking a page from karate--another Japanese art--each title is graded by color: White Belt for easy, Green Belt for medium level, Brown Belt for hard, and Black Belt for the super-tough solvers. And because each book has an amazing 300 puzzles, the fun can go on for hours. Rerations < Brown Belt Sudoku (Martial Arts Sudoku) >

For Dummies
Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (Best Book for Beginners&Sudoku Lovers)
(There's no substitute for experience!!)
(Lots of practice puzzles not much instruction)
(Some serious flaws for a Sudoku Book (for Dummies))
(Easy puzzles way too difficult) This initial Su Doku for DUMMIES book ranks as the first and the best book for Sudoku lovers. Hands down, no comparison. My husband and I cut our teeth on its instructions. We collected other books in the process, but we ALWAYS returned to this one. Even the other SUDOKU FOR DUMMIES books don't compare to this volume (I can't explain why this would be true... I just state it).
We have completed this particular volume twice; today I did the last DIABOLICAL Sudoku.
Now, I am about to purchase THE VERY SAME BOOK, AGAIN (that's why I came to this page in AMAZON... to place the order).
This is our first and favorite. It's family. Go figure.
If you want a book that will please you at all levels, START ... AND END ... HERE. The explanations in the book are typical for "Dummies" books, where illustrations of methods accompany written instructions. Both are fairly easily understood even when logic, to me anyway, is a distant "second language." There are 80 "easy" puzzles that help develop skill with solving techniques; they get harder as you go along. Following these are 100 "tricky" puzzles that hone your skills to the point, theoretically, you can solve any Su Doku puzzle. To prove it, the book throws in 40 "tough" puzzles and 20 "diabolical" puzzles. I'm still working through the tricky puzzles and can't even imagine trying to solve the other two categories. Su Doku is entertaining and good exercise for the mind, especially as we grow older. "Dummies" is a good teacher and guide. I thought this book would provide more tactics on solving but it really has lots of practice puzzles at 3 levels -- from easy to difficult. Allow me to explain how messed up are the levels of difficulty of the puzzles in this book.
There are computer programs that let you enter any Sudoku puzzle and then can tell you how hard the puzzle is by classifying it into certain levels of difficulty. A friend of mine who is very good at Sudoku got one such software, and that one uses the following difficulty levels: 1) Very Easy, 2) Easy, 3) Medium, and 4) Hard. There is a separate special level of difficulty called "Very Hard - Unfair", but that's reserved for Sudoku puzzles that require guessing / trial and error.
Sudoku puzzle number 3 in this book, supposedly an "entry level" puzzle according to the book, is ranked as "Medium" by the software mentioned above. Who considers a level of difficulty 3 out of 4 an "entry level"? And I do think these kinds of software have extremely powerful solving engines, making them capable of accurate assessments on the levels of difficulty of any puzzle.
This messed up level of difficulty in such an early exercise can be extremely discouraging for newbies, and on the other hand, in my opinion it is a sympton of little care and very poor editing when putting this book together.
Page 35 of the book (Spanish version) talks about one of the alleged "Beyond the obvious" strategies, a so called "Rule of the three numbers in three cells", or in more standardized terminology found online, the "Hidden Triples" strategy. In my opinion the strategy is very poorly exemplified and explained in the book. Any webpage describing it is much more enlightening and clear. And there are numerous other strategies very carefully explained in several online sources, which are not even mentioned in this book (not even in the Sudoku for Dummies vol 2).
The book has no alphabetical index at the end by the way, so you can't search for strategy names directly, or for key words, and there is a good reason for that: the book has really very little textual information. An alphabetical index would be ridiculous with so few entries. There is only a few pages of text at the beginning, 37 out of 342 pages, Spanish version again. Those text pages basically describe the only rule of Sudoku with some diagrams, and them attempt to explain very few basic solving strategies plus the poorly explained hidden triples. From the 37 first pages remove the first 12 which are mostly contents, intro, etc. So basically, 25 pages of text, in a small format book (7x5 inches). The bulk of the book is just exercises, and their solutions.
This book in general does not match the typical comprehensiveness I've seen in many For Dummies books.
What other reviewer indicates is also true, the paper this book was made of is pretty bad, doesn't stand erasing too well.
Conclusion: NOT recommended. Try other Sudoku books with less faults. And in any case, check the numerous Sudoku resources and compilations of strategies available for free online. This book in my opinion is not worth it. I really regret having purchased it. I read the full introduction, being new to sudoku. Thought I would have the tools from reading to certainly do the easy puzzles in this book, but found them way too brain-twisting. The puzzles were not a good followup teaching tool as way too difficult. I couldn't believe those puzzles were marked EASY even after reading a lot of these materials.
So I would have to rate this as not a good sudoku book for anyone but more advanced. Just my humble opinion. Sudoku for Dummies Rerations < Su Doku for Dummies (Sudoku) >

(Good beginner book for me!)
(Wonderfully big grids)
(Good format, but some puzzles not properly formed)
(Definitely choose Total Sudoku) I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF A REVIEW. IT'S A GREAT BOOK FOR THOSE OF US THAT ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED. FULL PAGE PUZZLES! I'M NOT A PUZZLE MANIAC. JUST ENJOY THE CHALLENGE AND DO IT TO KEEP MY OLD BRAIN ACTIVE. IF YOU ARE VISUALLY IMPAIRED, THIS IS FOR YOU. WISH I COULD FIND ANOTHER. I enjoy using this book, paper is great, space is wonderful and the easy is not too easy! I do the puzzles everyday because it is a joy to work with! I love this one! Each puzzle is big, big, big -- one puzzle per 8 X 10 page. Lots of room to solve in. The quality of the paper is great. And there are 16 by 16 grids in the back -- my favorites. Buy this one, not the so-called "jumbo" puzzles by the same author. This Sudoku book is both great and a major disappointment at the same time. The great part is that the puzzles are printed nice and big so that you have enough space in the number squares to write down the possibilities. And the paper is strong enough so that you don't make holes in the paper as you write and erase. I had other Sudoku books where I ended up making a copy of each page before working on it.
The disappointment is that some puzzles are not properly formed, and have more than one solution. This is a fantastic book for sudoku starters everywhere. It has instructions that are really well written and a huge grid that is much easier to use and see than others. Another reviewer said that the levels are spread out, but that is so you can try different levels and work yourself up to levels. In a way it keeps you on a "roll." If you chose any sudoku book let this be the one. Total Sudoku is the hot new puzzle craze in the US. Now, from one of the world's leading sudoku experts, comes Total Sudoku.Total Sudoku has it all with 200 all new puzzles ranging in levels from easy to fiendish
each puzzle has an oversized grid so you have more room and there are even extreme Sudoku puzzles in giant 16 x 16 grids. Plus, Total Sudoku debuts 10 circular puzzles, a brand new twist on the sudoku theme. At 256 pages and three styles of sudoku, this is one of the most comprehensive books in the marketplace!
