The Elverson Puzzle Company
customer 's review (this is a great board/get the rubber bands!!!)
(all that glitters is not gold)
(Clever system for marking possible numbers makes this a great game)
(Good quality)
(Quality all the way!) This board came today, it is very nice and has the best and most elegant solution to the issue of placeholders for number possibilities. The gold spikes are a great idea. Just stick one more in on a tiny grid and you know what numbers you are considering at a glance --- no scribbling on paper on the side.. no searching for tiny tiles.
What a great idea! it sold me and now that I have the board, I think my instincts were right on! Get this. You will not be disappointed.
The board itself is very nice. Heavy and attractive.
I am very glad I called Everston and added an order of elastic bands for the pieces!. The company was completely responsive and just added the elastics on to my Amazon order. The board shipped so fast, I had this board as quickly as if it had been sent via Prime. Great product, fabulous customer service.
I find that with elastic bands on, the pieces are very tough to jostle. I have 2 young sons and so that matters! Indeed I may call the company and ask them for an extra set of pieces altogether so I don't have to sweat the fact that my kids find them facinating :)
Great board! Great company! I really feel like I got my money's worth. I bought the deluxe wooden sudoku board for my husband for his November birthday and he does enjoy it daily. It is well made and the board is a convenient method of playing the game. The only part of it that he does not bother using is the pegs.. he feels that they are superfluous. Other than that he does get great enjoyment using this product I bought this game for my husband for Valentine's and he loves it.
The gold spike system for keeping track of your potential numbers is very clever. There are nine holes in each space that you can use to mark with a nail your possiblities. Because all the numbers take the same spot (i.e. the first hole is a one, the second two, the third three, etc.) it's easy to see at a glance what numbers are available and where the patterns are.
The game comes with a book that has Sudoku puzzles of different levels and also strategies on how to narrow down possible numbers. When you can see the patterns quickly and easily it makes the game that much more fun. I think the spike system makes this the best Sudoku game on the market.
The seller, Elversen Puzzle, was excellent. They kept me informed on the delivery and the packaging was superb.
My husband, myself and our kids are having a great time with this game. I got this for my wife and she really enjoys it. She would rather have had a unit that has a recessed area for each game piece, other than that it's awesome. I bought the Gold Spike Sudoku Puzlle from Elverson. The game arrived before I expected it to and is of very high quality. Clearly this seller takes pride in his product - a real treat. The wood is a delight to touch, and the famous Gold Spikes are a pleasure to use. Sudoku is fun and this board makes it more fun. If there were 6 stars, I'd give it that! The beauty and craftsmanship of our Gold SpikeTM Deluxe Wooden Sudoku board game is simply without equal. The Gold SpikeTM Sudoku board game measures 12* by 12* and has a beautiful Walnut top. It features our Gold SpikeTM Tracking System (Pat. Pending) - a unique innovative system that uses gold pegs to keep track of potential numbers for each space - no need for paper, pencils and erasing! Sudoku is a one of the most addictive puzzles ever created!? It requires no arithmetic - only logical thinking and the process of elimination. The game is played on a grid consisting of nine rows, nine columns, and nine blocks.? Each row, column, and block contains nine squares.? The puzzle begins with some numbers already on the grid.? The object is to fill in the remaining empty spaces so that each row, column and block contains all of the numbers from 1 to 9. Gold SpikeTM Sudoku Board Game includes 50 puzzles by Angus Johnson to get you started, and can be played with any Sudoku puzzle from your favorite newspaper, book or computer game.? (What I Needed)
(How to solve fairly easy sudoku)
(Robin Wilson's Sudoku book)
(I Hate This Book) Exceptionally well done guide for beginners -- logical presentation, jargon-free instructions. For anyone who can do "moderate" to "demnding" puzzles, this little book has nothing new to offer. Strictly for beginners -- but a fantastic beginner book!! I have been doing Sudoku compulsively for a couple months with two other books. I thought I would be pretty good until I got to X-Wing and Swordfish. I went through this entire book in two days and loved it. It does something none of the other books do. It teaches the basics of logic and takes you through every step so that you can make sure you understand it. If you are a beginner get this book first and don't even look at anything else. If you are stuck at finding hidden triples, X-wings, and Swordfish get this book. This book restores my belief that Sudoku is a logic puzzle and not just some braniacs trying to prove how brilliant they are. Skip the fancy stuff and have fun and after some therapy with this book, go back to the fancy stuff. I've been doing SuDoku puzzles for years and have beaten every level of the video game version Carol Vonderman's (PS2). Still, I wanted to be able to solve the really tough puzzles so I figured a book such as this would help. It's worthless unless you've never tried the game before. It has NOTHING about the advanced techniques like X-wings and Swordfish which are necessary to do the VERY hard ones. The book is very short, too; less than 100 pages. I suggest you save your money, do the easy ones, get practice, and go to the web for forums and sites which tell how to do the tough puzzles because the methods in this book aren't adequate, trust me! Somewhat useful, though also disappointing; the "52 ideas" format is misleading as to the number of distinct strategies given in the book for solving Sudoku puzzles, which in fact is significantly smaller than 52. This is the worst Sudoku book i ever tried. It's supposed to be so easy to use. A mathematician wrote it, and forgot how to write it for the average person. The rules are complicated, and the grids have the alphabet all around it supposedly to make it easier to place the numbers. It's not it's more confusing. What the author should of done was a few example puzzles step by step showing how you arrive at the correct answer as well as showing it. The grids need to be larger as well as the book itself. Format matters when you're trying to learn something or have trouble learning. I ended up throwing this book away. For me it was a waste of money and not worth it. I give this book 1 star.
Sudoku’s spreading faster than you can count to nine. But these seriously addictive, completely captivating puzzles can get fans a little gridlocked from time to time. They’ll be able to get back in the game with the help of mathematician and bestselling author Robin Wilson—himself a sudoku aficionado. He’s got the solution to unraveling these conundrums, with 52 tried and tested tips and tactics. How to Solve Sudokutakes you through them, one by one, with plenty of examples and practice grids so that you can hone your skills before you move on to the next fiendish brainteaser. Vertical(2009-03-24)
Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review(Well, they are difficult puzzles but ...) (Toughest ever) The ratings in this little gem suggest that the puzzles range from "difficult" through "very difficult" culminating with a collection of fiendish puzzles. True enough, but ...
The trouble with this set of puzzles is that Nishio's solutions focus too often on a series of the simplest of the advanced skills - box, row and column claims; and hidden doubles, triples and quadruples. Even in the "fiendish" puzzles, the solutions only rarely venture into the use of such tools as conjugate pair chains, x-wings, swordfish, or xy-chains. And, in those few instances that these tools are required to squeeze out the solution, the entire back of the puzzle is typically broken by a single application of the more advanced technique.
I confess that I haven't completed every solution in the book yet but I haven't found a single instance of a puzzle that required two really advanced techniques to reach a solution.
That said, I'm happy to recommend this particular book to advanced Sudoku freaks who enjoy a challenge. Of particular interest is the small set of Sudoku variations included at the end of the book. In the context of this review, it would simply take too long to describe the rules of the variants that Nishio has created but, (trust me here) these are far more devious and challenging than the regular puzzles.
Well done, Mr Nishio. I've still got more enjoyment to go in this book and I'd happily pick up any other puzzles books with your byline.
Paul Weiss
These are very challenging puzzles. They can be lots of fun if you're willing to be patient and persistent. The continued success of Sudoku means that there's a new breed of Sudoku puzzler: experienced, resourceful, and ready for puzzles that transcend the rote specimens one encounters in the daily newspaper, online, or in mass market magazines. It is this sector of puzzle solvers that grows every day, and the sector for which Vertical has conceived its line of Sudoku books.
Sudoku is a logic puzzle that was originally created in the U.S., but which achieved its popularity in Japan. Hence the Japanese name. The goal is to fit the numbers 1 through 9 into blocks of nine squares, using each numeral only once. Until recently, these basic Sudoku puzzles have been created with simple computer software. Easy to create, yes, but formulaic and unchallenging. The puzzles inSudoku Hellare conceived by Japan's greatest puzzle mind, Tetsuya Nishio, who takes extreme pleasure in creating his puzzles as devilishly devious as possible. And, as with Vertical's previous collections, there are an array of Sudoku-inspired variant puzzles inSudoku Hell, which offer unique new ways to entertain and drive puzzlers mad with pleasure.

Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review(Great for the Novice) (Great Sudoku Book for All Levels) (COULD HAVE GONE FARTHER) (Good for non-experts.) (GOOD INSTRUCTION AS WELL AS PUZZLES) I had never done a sudoku puzzle so I bought this book and loved it. So much so that I'm now online to get my next Vorderman Sudoku book.
Her method takes you through 4 levels of difficulty explaining techniques for solving at each level and diagramming solutions as they are worked out.
She also has scores for the puzzles which adds a little spice. For example, if your time is less than X minutes you get Y points, etc. The harder the puzzles the longer you have to solve them, but the times are often pretty challenging.
Interestingly, I found that I trusted Carol to provide solvable puzzles. Some of the books I've picked up have puzzles that don't seem to be solvable - one of them even had wrong anwers in the back, i.e. the grid in the answers didn't match the grid given for the puzzle.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles.***** This is a great sudoku book for all levels, but especially good for those who wish to increase their sudoku proficiency and MASTER sudoku. There are 200 puzzles, only one to a page, printed large enough for marking up. There are places to record your time, too, and you can accrue points based on how quickly you can do a puzzle. This is nice, because although I prefer difficult puzzles now, it's fun to go back and do an easy one faster and faster. There are different techniques involved in the different levels of puzzles and timing them makes them all continue to be challenging.
If you're a beginner, you can start out with the easy puzzles and work your way up. There are medium puzzles, too, as well as difficult and super-difficult. There is plenty of technique instruction, and there are many examples, so this could serve as a first book for adults. It was not my first sudoku book, but it is still one of my favorites, and I find myself going back to it again and again.
Highly recommended. *****I WAS HOPING THAT SHE WOULD HAVE GONE INTO THE SOLVING OF MORE DIFFICULT PUZZLES. HOWEVER, I THINK SHE DID A GOOD JOB IN SOLVING THE MEDIUM PUZZLE SOLUTIONS.Good basics. A good springboard, and you can go to more advanced techniques later. Her favorite epressions are "slicing and dicing." Took a while for me to figure out that all she's telling you is to look horizontally, and vertically.
VERY HELPFUL. SHE DOESN'T LEAVE YOU WONDERING WHAT CAN I DO, OR TRY, OR WHERE TO START. IT'S ALL THERE FOR BEGINNER OR DIFFICULT PUZZLE SOLVER. THE ONLY BOOK OF IT'S KIND OUT THERE ...I.B.E. MASS.Master the Numbers Game That’s Taking the World by Storm

customer 's review(Disappointing implementation) (Sudoku-Play at Joe's) (moderately decent game, horribly inconvenient) (Great Brain Food!) I bought this game after looking at several choices on store shelves, and deciding this was the best choice I bought it. I immediately discovered that my choice was a poor one.
On the surface, this looks like a very capable version of computerized Sudoku, which is exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something with LOTS of puzzles, some variety in difficulty levels, the ability to print, and an intuitive GUI for playing. This version does all four of these. For that, it is to be commended - it has the features most serious players will desire.
That said, the implementation and additional features make this game a less than ideal choice.
One of the most annoying features is that it requires the CD to be in the drive when playing, and for some that is inconvenient.
More of an aggravation, though, are the sounds for the game. There is background music that serves only to be distracting. There also happens to be a voice element to announce the numbers as they are placed - the voice sounds very much like you would imagine for an anime schoolgirl that's entirely too happy for her own good. I cut the speakers for that one. With no sound, gameplay is a lot more pleasant and is acceptable.
The game allows the player to show mistakes during play. HOWEVER, once that setting is turned on, it is not possible to turn it off except when there is no game being played. For players that are learning to play, this is fine, but once a player knows the lay of the land, either the current game needs to be quit in order to toggle this setting, or it needs to be turned off at initial launch.
In the box with the CD was a bright orange card that stated that there was an update to the game available to patch a problem with printing. While I realize that this likely went in the box after the golden image was sent to the duplicator, it still is annoying to find that your brand new game is already outdated.
I looked for another Sudoku game the very next day and found a better one with more features, a better interface, and a smaller price tag. If you want a good Sudoku game for your computer, I cannot recommend Play at Joe's Sudoku Challenge unless there are no other options available. Your money is better spent on other choices.the games cannot be identified so that you can save them and do later. I like to print out the blank game, then print the possibilities and then see the answers. I tossed this product as unusable for me.Play at Joe's Sudoku is a moderately decent version of Sudoku, not half as nice as the shareware version I had downloaded. I bought this version because I wanted a CD, rather than paying for a software key that could get lost. Boy did I miss the point! This game REQUIRES the CD to start. Who does it that way today and why? I like to play games like this while I'm busy with other tasks, like burning copies of home movies for relatives. Unless I remember to start the game first, I'm out of luck. And I've got to keep that CD on my desk, available in case I want to play it. In other words, I DON'T play it, I'm back to playing Solitare. I spent $20 on a totally worthless game.I got hooked on Sudoku when I traveled to the UK on business. Everyone there was doing puzzles daily. I got caught up in the madness! These puzzles are great for keeping your mind sharp and are a great exercise for school children to learn logic and deduction. Not only am I hooked now, but my wife, 9 yr old, 12 yr old and 16 yr old all take a daily dose of Sudoku.
I had bought Sudoku software while in the UK, but the puzzles were not true Sudoku puzzles- meaning that they fudged the puzzle and many of the puzzles could not be completed correctly. The Play at Joe's puzzles are formulated in the same way as the Japanese masters have done for centuries. Play at Joe's Sudoku Challenge is authentic and addictive!
The Sudoku Challenge is a great game for anyone who loves crosswords, word searches, mahjongg, brainteasers, solitaire or any addictive game. You can even print out puzzles to take along for your commute. Highly recommended game! Sudoku Challenge is the Japanese numbers game that's driving everyone mad. We guarantee that once you've tried one Sudoku puzzle, you'll be hooked! The deceptively simple goal of Sudoku is to fill in the missing numbers in a 9x9 grid. All it takes is some brains and concentration. Maybe it sounds easy, since it doesn't require any calculating or special math skills -- but trust us, this challenge to your logic and reasoning will keep you busy for hours! On Hand Software(2006-01-14)
customer 's review(Of course you can pencil-in candidates) (Not as good as the original) (Not as versitile as other versions of SuDoKu) (Perfect computerized Sudoku) (Good, but not great) The review given here by Professor says that Classic Sudoku does not allow you to "pencil-in" the possibilites for each entry. He says that the program does that for you. This is not true. You can add your own possible numbers which appear in a smaller size than the final one. The game does not have that automatic "fill-in" feature he mentions--you'll have to do the work yourself. Professor must have been reviewing another Sudoku product and by mistake included it here.
I am very happy with my purchase. This software is easy to use, it has several levels of difficulty...it fulfilled my expectations. With the original version, multiple games could be printed on one sheet of paper to complete at your leisure. In this version, more trees are killed because you only have the ability to print one game per one sheet of paper. Other than that, this game software is what I anticipated and I am satisfied with the product.I was very disappointed with this CD, as I was hoping for the ability to add and erase my own pencil notes rather than only having the choice of the program adding them or not. This one is the best of what I've tried. It allows you space to put in trials before actually entering the answer. Best of all it doesn't clutter up the program with a lot of extraneous graphics that slow down the program and shrink the playing area. However, it does have nice graphics and a choice of backgrounds so it is a pleasant environment. There are 4 puzzle levels: easy, medium, hard and impossible. There are 5 "themes", but these are only background frames. There are settings for error-checking and timing. The numbers are large and boldface, easy to see/read. There is a "flash me" setting for hints if you get stuck. There is no annoying "theme song" to be silenced. The only "sound effects" are beeps for errors and at completion of the puzzle, but it would be nice to have some kind music or sound when a puzzle is finished correctly. (The bells-drums-shouts at puzzle end on the USAToday and Washington Post online Sudoku games are fun -- a sort of Pavlovian trigger which makes one want to solve another puzzle!) You get good value from this CD version.Sudoku is the Japanese numbers game that's driving everyone mad. We guarantee that once you've tried one Sudoku puzzle, you'll be hooked! The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numeral from 1 through 9 in each cell of a 9 x 9 grid made up of 3 x 3 sub-grids (called regions), starting with various numerals given in some cells (the givens). Each row, column and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. Solving the puzzle requires patience and logical ability. Its grid layout is reminiscent of other newspaper puzzles like crosswords and chess problems. Although first published in 1979, Sudoku became popular in Japan in 1986 and took the United Kingdom by storm.
