(With this book I'm no longer a Sudoku dummy)

(Advanced Sudoku Made "Simple")

(One of the Better Sudoku Books Out There)
I recently acquired a nice computer-aided Sukoku solver called UniSudoku for Macintosh computers and decided that since the drudgery of determining what options remained for each square were handled nicely by this solver, that I could concentrate on the strategy of solving Sudoku puzzles without guessing. I started to look for strategies published online and got hopelessly confused with the multitude of names for these various strategies.

I then bought this book. The strategies it offers for really hard Sudokus (especially x-y (conjugate pair) chains, x-y chains, and unique rectangles) have been fantastic for solving every level of difficulty of Sudoku puzzles I have encountered. As a previous Amazon reviewer has noted, these strategies are simply explained with examples that allow you to solve any puzzle that is presented to you. I highly recommend this book.

Sudoku Dummy no longer!

This book contains not only difficult Sudoku puzzles, but also a good description of strategies for solving them. These strategies include: Naked pairs, naked triplets, hidden pairs, hidden triplets, intersection removal, the X-wing, swordfish, various chains, etc. Although many of these strategies can also be found for free on the internet, the clarity of the explanations in this book, in my opinion, alone make it worth having.

A series of conventional advanced sudoku puzzles is provided, and answers are given in the back. Each puzzle is 3.25 inch by 3.25 inch (8.3 cm by 8.3 cm) in size, making it conveniently large enough to pencil-in the possibilities for each square.

This book also includes unconventional sudoku-based puzzles and their solutions. This encompasses sudoku jigsaw puzzles, killer puzzles, target puzzles, and 12 by 12 (instead of the conventional 9 by 9) sudoku puzzles.

Get busy!

As a lot of people have, I have become a big fan of Sudoku lately. A problem with a lot of books out there for Sudoku is that they can have way too many easy puzzles for the more advanced Sudoku user or they don't quite follow the rules I find are important (an earlier book I owned required guessing to get to solve a puzzle in the more advanced stages, or they don't start out with symmetric patterns, which the more traditional sudoku start with).

This book is fantastic in that the puzzles start off challenging (this is not a beginners book). They incorporate more advanced techniques that one doesn't often find in books while not putting in techniques that are so advanced one would need a computer to use (This is a flaw in other books as well).

The only drawback. I've seen in the book is that some of the terminology is inconsistent with a lot of the seemingly official terminology seen on internet forums and puzzles. I'll also admit that I am not a huge fan of some of the variations presented in the book. They aren't necessarily bad, but I think it would have been neater to throw in a couple of Killer Sudoku or Samurai Sudoku puzzles to show some challenging variations.

Have you worn out all of your pencils mastering ever-changing Sudoku puzzles? Have you stepped up your game to the next level and now seek something a little more demanding? Do you crave the challenge of more cunning, deadly Sudoku?

Extreme Sudoku For Dummiesfeatures 236 beyond diabolical puzzles to challenge even the most skilled expert—perfect for anyone who wants to be a true Sudoku master. In this book you will not only discover some amazingly tricky Sudoku puzzles, but also face new challenges in the form of Killer Sudoku, Irregular Sudoku, and other recently developed variations. And you won't need to rely on guesswork—you'll find an easy-to-understand, logical approach that will help you tackle even the most difficult puzzles in the book.Extreme Sudoku For Dummiesoffers:

  • An overview of Sudoku basics
  • Variations such as 9 x 9, 12 x 12, 16 x 16, jigsaw, circular, and killer puzzles

  • The lowdown on advanced strategies such as Naked Pairs, Naked Triplets, Hidden  Pairs, X-Wing, Y-Wing, and other techniques

Along with a wealth of puzzles that will test every Sudoku player's skill,Extreme Sudoku For Dummiesprovides the tips, tricks, advice, and strategies to help you become a true master of the game.

(The Official Book of Wordoku)

(new puzzle)

(Adds sense of accomplishment to Sudoku)

(Pretty Good)
I bought this for my cousin who loves doing crossword puzzles and sudoku. Sudoku was challenging enough for her, but wordoku is a beast. She loves the mental motivation.
I love the new type of puzzle called Wordoko--I had gotten bored with Suduko&was looking for something different&found it in Worduko.
I thought Sudoku was a little boring before I got this book. When you are done, all you had was a grid of numbers. With Wordoku, you discover the solution to a jumbled word. The nine letters are given in an order that makes them easy to remember, but still very difficult to guess the word upfront. There are a variety of difficulty levels, including the last 10 puzzles where only 8 of the letters are given, so you can't really guess the word until you solve the puzzle.

I definately recommend to Sudoku and word puzzle lovers. It's very addictive and a great way to take a break or pass time on a flight, etc. My only complaint is that they haven't come out with Wordoku 2 yet, so I'm forced to print more puzzles off the internet instead.

I got into playing Sudoku puzzles a few months ago, and I have to say that it's addicting! Every night now I find myself doing at least one puzzle - it's hard to put them down!

This particular book combines Sudoku with word puzzles. So, instead of filling the grids with the numbers 1 through 9, you're filling the grids in with specific letters - and, when you're done, you get to try to solve the anagram of the letters given by finding that 9 letter word within the grid.

In case you haven't played Sudoku before, it's a numbers (in this case letters) logic puzzle. You're given a 9x9 grid, and you have to determine which numbers/letters go into which square within the smaller 3x3 grid, and then again within the larger 9x9 grid. Each letter/number can only be used once within each square, row and column. You do this by working off of the few answers given - deducing the correct answers along the way.

The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that each puzzle has a different set of letters to work with - so every time you do a new puzzle, you have to memorize the letters that are being used. I found that it helps if I try to solve the anagram first - that way I only have to remember that one word as I work through solving the puzzle.

Overall, I found it to be a fun twist to the traditional Sudoku. So, if you like this type of logic puzzle, you may want to give this a try.

There’s something new on the sudoku scene—and it’s bound to capture the attention of word lovers.Wordokufollows the same basic principles as sudoku, except that solvers fill the grid with nineletters. Under each grid, the letters for that puzzle appear, in a pronounceable anagram. Then, just like the original, you have to arrange them so that every letter appears in every column, every row, and every 3x3 box just one time: anyone, including non-English speakers, can do that. But unlike sudoku, the fun doesn’t end there: buried inside the grid, you’ll also find the answer to the anagram. (In some cases, to make it tougher, the anagram actually has TWO possible solutions.) It’s brainbusting, entertaining, and irresistible.

(What difference! The best sukoku I've seen.)

(My Favorite Sudoku Publisher)

(I Guess it Depends...)

(Addictive!)

(Misleading)
Most sudoku puzzles are punched out by computer programs. They can be entertaining, but the actual playing by human beings has not been factored in. It gets frustrating to start an "easy" puzzle, only to be completely stymied by how difficult it actually is.

Not so here. You're given the same amount of starting numbers as the computerized puzzles, with a big difference: Someone actually sat down and looked at how they'd play.

The result is that the "easy" puzzles are REALLY easy, ditto the medium and hard. For anyone starting out with this addictive pastime, you won't do better than this book. After reading the three simple techniques of how to solve sudoku given in the introduction you're ready to plunge in. The first few puzzles will tease your brain, but won't fry it. They are in fact easy, and will give you rapid gratification. Then you're hooked, and you'll want more.

This book is very different from most other sudoku collections. You'll find fun, not frustration here. Highly recommended.

The Nikoli Publishing puzzles are both fun to complete and well-sized. The puzzle grids are a little over 3 inches by 3 inches. I like this size because it's small enough to see patterns emerging (look at the puzzle as a whole) yet large enough to pencil in multiple numbers that might reside in a single square.

I agree with another reviewer who commented that sometimes the designations don't seem to jive -- I've found some of the "very hard" puzzles easier to complete that some of the "medium" puzzles. But the puzzles are fun and engaging.

I like this publisher better than Sudoku puzzle books edited by Will Shortz (the puzzle grids are just too big) and the Master Sudoku books by Carol Vorderman. I'd rank Nikoli one, Vorderman two and Shortz 3. However, I think Vorderman give the best "How to Solve" directions and would point beginners to her books.

This book boasts of the transcendent qualities of its "hand crafted" puzzles, even providing an example of an inferior computer-generated puzzle to exemplify the difference. The editor predicts, "You will soon discover that making a start is difficult. There are no cells in which to place a number using straightforward techniques." I solved the puzzle pretty straightforwardly, and found it no less satisfying and not especially more difficult than many other sudoku I have tackled.

But I suppose it depends upon the style with which you approach the puzzles. The book provides some strategies which are pretty primitive as compared with methods I have learned from other sources. I have no doubt some would describe these as more "pure" techniques in that they seem to suggest one examine the puzzle until he can fill in each cell definitively without jotting down any intermediate notations of the possible contents of a cell -- a little like doing crossword puzzles in ink. I solved a few of the "Easy" and "Medium" puzzles in this style and found them to be fairly challenging.

When I use the more powerful tactics which I tend to prefer, however, even the "Very Hard" puzzles are a cake-walk. As another reviewer noted, there really seems to be little, if any, difference in difficulty among the classifications ranging from "Easy" to "Very Hard". For seriously challenging puzzles I am going to have to look to other sources. Or perhaps I will graduate one day to the joys of "pure" sudoku, and toss out my supply of mechanical pencils and high quality erasers.

Containing 300 handcrafted puzzles, this is a good book to advance your skills. The size is nice--smaller than a mass market paperback, the pages nevertheless stand up to a fair amount of erasing and are easily ripped out. The tips in the front are good for a beginner, as I was when I bought it. I'm relieved that many reviewers find the puzzles difficult, because I find even the "easy" ones hard sometimes. It doesn't surprise me a bit that most puzzles today are computer generated, but these are pleasingly symetrical. Be prepared to get hooked!
One of the respiratory therapists wandered through the recovery room during a quiet night and found me working one of these puzzles. "Not you too," he moaned. He told me all of his friends were "hooked on" the puzzles. I have to admit it, they are habit forming, but the habit arises from the tension of every day living. Who's life isn't complicated to absurdity sometimes. I work these puzzles for the same reason I worked an entire book of advanced algebra the year my mother died. It allowed me to focus on something that so fully demanded my intellectual attention that my emotions were allowed to rest for a while. It's not easy to achieve that inner peace one needs desparately sometimes. Some do it through meditation, some by physical exercise, some by a walk in the woods. I do it with sudoku-and occasionally algebra problems-sort of an emotional vacation. Sometimes I even play meditation music in the background.

That said, I'll say that this is a lovely book of puzzles. For one thing, most of them are "pretty" as well as challenging, arranged in pinwheels, zigzags, and other symmetrical shapes. The one caveat is that though they are arranged as "easy," "medium," "hard," and "very hard," in fact they are all pretty much of the same level of difficulty throughout. In fact I found some of the very hard puzzles easier to complete than some of the so-called easy ones. Generally level of difficulty is determined by the number of squares filled in for the puzzle worker. Most if not all of these had 24 of 81 squares completed, roughly a quarter. Sometimes there were very few repeated numbers and when there were, the same cross number or other numbers were not available to eliminate all but the one square to complete a triad of one number in a column or row of blocks. This was the only factor that seemed to determine whether a puzzle was actually easy or not, but this feature seemed randomly distributed through all the levels of difficulty.

I would suggest that this book is probably a wonderful selection of puzzles for the average to skilled player-a master would probably not find any of them challenging-because they are often unexpectedly difficult. A beginner might find them too frustrating to continue on with the book. It's demoralizing to find one can't even begin to do an "easy" puzzle. For the beginner, I'd look for a book where the easy puzzles give you from 28 to 30 or more of the numbers.
