(Do you sudoku: a great game!) My 4-yr-old loves Sudoku, so we were eager to play this game. It is a great IDEA but Sudoku just doesn't work as a board game. Occasionally you have to guess where to put a piece, and if you guess wrong and later unwind the card, it gets a little crazy (in real Sudoku this is not a problem). Also the patterns across the grid are "inverses" of each other - hard to explain here but you will realize it pretty quickly when you start playing. Better to start little ones with the 4x4 grid sticker books (NickJR has a bunch). Still, it is fun to play. I purchased this game for my 5 year old. It is a great way to teach logic to little ones. At 5, he needs a bit of help at times, but the whole family enjoys playing the game (5 yrs, 9 yrs, 11 yrs, and up). The Sudoku board game allows players to compete in a multiplayer Sudoku game. Each player/team gets assigned a game board (mild, hot, or spicy) and races to see who can complete the puzzle first. The game includes two boards, two number sets, and one set of game cards. This game is very enjoyable and entertaining. Another neat feature is one player can use this game alone. Since the boards do not require a game card to work, the number of games is un-limited and can come from many different sources (books, magazines, website, etc), which requires you to place the given numbers yourself. This has provided us a great way to play Sudoku without the pencil and will continue to provide another way to enjoy Sudoku. Rerations < Do You Sudoku? For Kids Game >

(There's no substitute for experience!!)
(Lots of practice puzzles not much instruction)
(Some serious flaws for a Sudoku Book (for Dummies))
(Easy puzzles way too difficult) This initial Su Doku for DUMMIES book ranks as the first and the best book for Sudoku lovers. Hands down, no comparison. My husband and I cut our teeth on its instructions. We collected other books in the process, but we ALWAYS returned to this one. Even the other SUDOKU FOR DUMMIES books don't compare to this volume (I can't explain why this would be true... I just state it).
We have completed this particular volume twice; today I did the last DIABOLICAL Sudoku.
Now, I am about to purchase THE VERY SAME BOOK, AGAIN (that's why I came to this page in AMAZON... to place the order).
This is our first and favorite. It's family. Go figure.
If you want a book that will please you at all levels, START ... AND END ... HERE. The explanations in the book are typical for "Dummies" books, where illustrations of methods accompany written instructions. Both are fairly easily understood even when logic, to me anyway, is a distant "second language." There are 80 "easy" puzzles that help develop skill with solving techniques; they get harder as you go along. Following these are 100 "tricky" puzzles that hone your skills to the point, theoretically, you can solve any Su Doku puzzle. To prove it, the book throws in 40 "tough" puzzles and 20 "diabolical" puzzles. I'm still working through the tricky puzzles and can't even imagine trying to solve the other two categories. Su Doku is entertaining and good exercise for the mind, especially as we grow older. "Dummies" is a good teacher and guide. I thought this book would provide more tactics on solving but it really has lots of practice puzzles at 3 levels -- from easy to difficult. Allow me to explain how messed up are the levels of difficulty of the puzzles in this book.
There are computer programs that let you enter any Sudoku puzzle and then can tell you how hard the puzzle is by classifying it into certain levels of difficulty. A friend of mine who is very good at Sudoku got one such software, and that one uses the following difficulty levels: 1) Very Easy, 2) Easy, 3) Medium, and 4) Hard. There is a separate special level of difficulty called "Very Hard - Unfair", but that's reserved for Sudoku puzzles that require guessing / trial and error.
Sudoku puzzle number 3 in this book, supposedly an "entry level" puzzle according to the book, is ranked as "Medium" by the software mentioned above. Who considers a level of difficulty 3 out of 4 an "entry level"? And I do think these kinds of software have extremely powerful solving engines, making them capable of accurate assessments on the levels of difficulty of any puzzle.
This messed up level of difficulty in such an early exercise can be extremely discouraging for newbies, and on the other hand, in my opinion it is a sympton of little care and very poor editing when putting this book together.
Page 35 of the book (Spanish version) talks about one of the alleged "Beyond the obvious" strategies, a so called "Rule of the three numbers in three cells", or in more standardized terminology found online, the "Hidden Triples" strategy. In my opinion the strategy is very poorly exemplified and explained in the book. Any webpage describing it is much more enlightening and clear. And there are numerous other strategies very carefully explained in several online sources, which are not even mentioned in this book (not even in the Sudoku for Dummies vol 2).
The book has no alphabetical index at the end by the way, so you can't search for strategy names directly, or for key words, and there is a good reason for that: the book has really very little textual information. An alphabetical index would be ridiculous with so few entries. There is only a few pages of text at the beginning, 37 out of 342 pages, Spanish version again. Those text pages basically describe the only rule of Sudoku with some diagrams, and them attempt to explain very few basic solving strategies plus the poorly explained hidden triples. From the 37 first pages remove the first 12 which are mostly contents, intro, etc. So basically, 25 pages of text, in a small format book (7x5 inches). The bulk of the book is just exercises, and their solutions.
This book in general does not match the typical comprehensiveness I've seen in many For Dummies books.
What other reviewer indicates is also true, the paper this book was made of is pretty bad, doesn't stand erasing too well.
Conclusion: NOT recommended. Try other Sudoku books with less faults. And in any case, check the numerous Sudoku resources and compilations of strategies available for free online. This book in my opinion is not worth it. I really regret having purchased it. I read the full introduction, being new to sudoku. Thought I would have the tools from reading to certainly do the easy puzzles in this book, but found them way too brain-twisting. The puzzles were not a good followup teaching tool as way too difficult. I couldn't believe those puzzles were marked EASY even after reading a lot of these materials.
So I would have to rate this as not a good sudoku book for anyone but more advanced. Just my humble opinion. Sudoku for Dummies Rerations < Su Doku for Dummies (Sudoku) >

(Dora the Explorer Sudoku #1)
(Great Fun while Problem Solving)
(I love my Sudoku and my Sudoku loves me)
(My 3 year old loves it!!!) Our 4- and 6- year-old children both love doing these puzzle books. Using the popular characters and stickers are a great way to introduce kids to sudoku--it is both fun and educational! This is a good way to introduce the logic of Sudoku to young children. I bought it for my five year old grandson but his three year old sister enjoyed it too - on a different level (sticker fun). The Dora theme is appealing to young children and the bright colored stickers make it fun to solve the puzzles. I am happy to see there is a second book (which I will purchase) so the children can continue to enjoy the younger version of this adult game. The only reason I gave it four stars rather than five was because it did not include numerical examples. We bought this product for our 4 1/2 year old daughter not sure if she would catch on like her 6 year old sister who does sudoku for kids. She really enjoys the puzzles and only needs some direction from her parents. More than enough puzzles and really appreciated that they provided extra stickers. A great deal for the money and we plan on buying more. I was confused for a while. I thought Sudoku was mathmatical. I think it was all the numbers and grids that confused me.
But it's not. It's pure logic, numbers are typically used out of convenience but it could be any distinct set of symbols. Dora Sudoku is a good illustration of that point because it uses stickers with pictures on them instead of numbers.
This book is great. When I tell people that I've got my daughter doing Sudokus, they sometimes respond as if I've put my daughter to work at a sweatshop. I guess they see the obsessive way I've gotten into Sudoku and worry that I'm foisting it on her. But I think it's great. Now when I talk about Sudoku we can both get excited together and work on our puzzles. And I'm very impressed with her ability to do them, she's really picked up on it quite well. These are puzzles for kids, of course, two by two boxes within a four by four grid, so we aren't talking about anything too overwhelming. You only need to hold one or two bits of information in your head at a time to solve it. That being said, the logic required to solve the Sudokus is the same logic required to solve more complex ones, just on a smaller scale. Also, the pictures are sometimes similar enough that one would have to pay attention to detail carefully to avoid mistakes. In the easier ones, the four pictures are four different characters on different color backgrounds. But some of them feature the same character in four different poses.
Thumbs up for Dora Sudoku. Anything that gets kids to enjoy books, concentrate, think in steps, and focus on details must be a good thing.
I picked up this book for my 3 year old daughter after she watched her dad doing Sudoku puzzles. Although it is a challenge, once she did a few with us and learned how to complete the puzzles she took off and started completing them on her own. The puzzles keep her attention. She will complete a few of them at a time. Occasionally 1 or 2 are in the wrong place but she definitely understands the concept and works at them well. I have searched but there are no other books like this out there. Would buy any other book that came out like this.
INTRODUCING SUDOKU PUZZLES FOR LITTLE EXPLORERS... Instead of numbers, these sudoku puzzles are made with pictures of Dora, Boots, and their friends. Now everyone in the family can enjoy the puzzle craze that's sweeping the planet! Includes more than 200 stickers for completing the puzzles!
