(Review from a day care teacher) 『I am amazed reading all these reviews. Many state it took hours to build and doubts as to whether an 8 year old could do it. I have this set plus another from this company in my school age classroom (5-12 years old, before/after school and summer camp). It took 4 of my students working together to build this set about an hour. I only had to step in to break up any arguments. The youngest engineers were 7. There was one 8 year old, and the oldest was 11. It is possible for children to do.
As for the educational aspect, it is great for logical thinking and scientific experimentation. Once children start building their own creations, and yes it is possible, they start exploring the science of "what if", as in "what if I move this piece higher" or "what if I change this angle". Of course parents and educators sometimes need to supply the terminology and maybe an idea or two to move things along.
Last on the educational theme, paired with other household or classroom objects this becomes a great way to introduce children to Rube Goldberg and making new inventions. Go ahead and Google him, I'll wait.
My point with this review is you cannot to sit back and be a spectator with any educational toy. It does require some parent involvement. If children get bored with this amazing toy, then it is the parent or educator's responsibility to step in and encourage new play and experimentation. Let's face it, any toy becomes boring if nothing new is introduced.』

There are basically no reviews out there so I felt like I was taking a chance so I thought I would leave a review to help others with their decision.
Initially when I played the game through the box I thought there was no way my son could play this. He cannot read more than the basics yet. Judging from the disk on the front, the game appeared to require reading. I decided to investigate further - this is a gift, I didn't want to break into it if I didn't have to but I felt it was necessary. After flipping through the 'disks', there is a huge selection of different topics that span over a large age range. A 5 year old could play this with some help but overall I would think this is more useful for a child who is fairly good at reading. There are a couple of disks that are appropriate for the younger group, like color recognition, shapes,&some puzzle-like discs but most are geared towards a 3rd or 4th grader.
I was surprised to see that the electronic game itself is extremely simple. The game flashes a group of lights that correspond with items on the bottom edge of the disk. Then the light will stop on one of the 8 spots&you are supposed to input the correct answer. You use a spinning wheel to adjust the number that you find on the main body of the disk. For example, one of the disks has flags on it. It shows the names of 8 countries along the bottom&the light stops on one, then you look to the flags&decide which one the lighted country name matches&then you input the corresponding number. The electronic game itself doesn't say anything more than a few words, it isn't specific to each disk at all, it is just the canned answers each time you answer a question right or wrong. It 'knows' what disc you are using because you input that in in the beginning, again using the spinning wheel on the left of the game but that is as far as the interaction goes - that was a bit of a disappointment.
Overall, I think my son will enjoy it but I was originally a bit put-off by the way it worked. I expected the electronic aspect to be more advanced, especially since the game is pretty expensive. I think if I would have known what I know now, I might not have ordered it. But the educational value is very high once my son can play this independently. Although it has 35 disks, they only have 8 'questions' each&so t will have a limited play-life unless I buy more of the disks that so far I cannot locate more than one set of Mathematic set (for $14 or so).
The item does work well&the disks appear to be fairly sturdy. They pack nicely in the back of the game. It would make for a great travel activity or game as it does allow for up to 2 players.
So, to summarize - works well, portable, simple concept but educational game/toy for a target age of probably 7-10. Some limits to play for the little kids&limited by the amount of available disks. I think my son will enjoy this but I wonder how many other children would play this instead of their Gameboys or Xboxes - it might just be too simple for the typical plugged-in kids??

I find I enjoy discovering the "tricks" of finishing these puzzles more satisfying than I would being told before hand what they are. Certainly I learn them more thoroughly by this method, because I have to intuit them; I actually have to understand the "why" behind the manuver. In my opinion this type of learning is inherently helpful in other tasks as well; that it is to say, transferable to ones life settings in other ways--although I have to admit I couldn't tell you specifically how or why. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (HORRIBLE installation and the game playing isn't that great!) 『The installation is slow for such a small simple game as it goes through some sort of verification procedure in which it told me I had errors but loaded anyway. Once I was playing the game it's slow going because you do have to click on the actual number to input it. I didn't have grid line problems like the other reviewer but I found it hard to focus because of the way it highlights both row and column per axis point. It's disconcerting if you aren't used to thinking about the grid that way. The hint feature isn't a hint it's more like it will just do it for you. Also you can't get rid of the hint's input. So if you thought it would give you options or highlight a row or column then think again.
My main complaint however is that it will not allow you to play it without having the original CD in the drive. No matter what. I like to play music in my CD drive while playing games but I guess in their quest to make sure no one cheats them out of one cent my music or any other use I have for the CD drive is just not important. I feel totally ripped off by the company and will attempt to return the game. It got one star because you can actually play the game.』
(A disappointment) 『I am addicted to Sudoku, play online a lot and buy the books. This was my first CD purchase and I am very disappointed in it.
First, you can't just type in the numbers, you have to click on a number on the side of the grid and then click on a square to put it there. It's a very slow way to play and distracting. It's especially annoying as I keep forgetting to click the number and end up putting the wrong number in the grid. I suppose with more play I would get used to it, but I'm not really sure I want to bother.
Second, Sudoku grids need to have clean lines and be easy to read, and this isn't. I spend far too long trying to locate the numbers I have already entered. This doesn't happen with the online games I have played.
I think it must be a memory hog as it runs quite slowly and jerkily at times, my mouse overshooting a square quite frequently. Maybe someone with a newer computer wouldn't have this problem.
There's also no way to reset the statistics or edit users, or to pause a game so the timer stops while you answer the phone, etc.
