I bought this game as a Christmas gift for my fiance and it seemed like a good buy. After playing the game, I'm not as impressed as I could have been.

Wordhunt flawed:

The computer comes with a 'wordhunt' exercise in which the computer gives you a series of letters such as BEEPS. From these five letters you are to rearrange any combination of them into words. The computer will give you the number of valid words to find (in this example it was 7). However, it doesn't work. I even went so far as to go to a scrabble web-site and check my work. There are only 10 words possible from these letters. The computer didn't recognize BE as a word. I tried every one of those 10 words and only 4 were recognized by the computer. When given AGATE, the computer said there were 8 words that could be made from this. AGATE (a stone) wasn't recognized. When given TELEX, neither TEEL nor LEET were recognized as valid words. Ultimately, this wordhunt is a mind reading game. You have to guess which words the computer knows and doesn't know. As for the person who complained about the word *ITCH showing up, I'm surprised it even knew that one.

Buttons difficult to use:

The buttons are small and difficult to use. They are not labels, but are meant to correspond to letters or numbers on the screen. It takes quite a bit of getting used to.

Flashcard is fun:

As of this writing, I'm studying for the GMAT and this flashcard game is great for sharpening my basic math skills. As you attempt higher levels, the complexity increases and you have less time to solve the problem. Eventually, you develop a knee-jerk correct response to the basic math that can trip you up on the GMAT's quantitative portion.

Overview:

Except for the weak word problems and the buttons, this toy may be helpful to keep the mind sharp, but it has much room for improvement.
Overall, this is very good. Especially with the included book. I can't give it 5 stars though because I feel that the timing is to fast (e.g. Flash Card) on Level 1 difficulty unless you're already a math wiz. And Word Hunt needs a bigger vocabulary. 2-letter words are not accepted such as it, up, is, etc. Also it knows that tim is a word but not tom. Can anyone really make 33 other words out of "kirtle" with limitations like that? It gets frustrating. My scores in Testing Mode will be low due to their poor programming! But use it for what it is, along with other exercises and read the book.
I bought this game for my kids because I had heard good things about it. It is too difficult for my 9 year old son. When my 10 1/2 year old daughter played it she got to the Word Hunt and was given the dirty word "*itch" and it wasn't witch. I called the company and they just want me to send it back and they'll give me a voucher for a new one! I enjoy playing it, but who knows what other words are going to come up. Definitely inappropriate for children.
We were very pleased with Brain game. Our concern is that the buttons are quite small....and anyone over forty may not have the dexterity to navigate little buttons.

We wish there were a larger model...such as one for "tabletop" (?) and one for travel (little buttons, this smaller case).

After fighting through the "Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku", my other Sudoku books were not a real challenge. To be fair, they actually weren't challenging before reading the guide either! I ordered the Level 1 and 2 books looking for challenges similar to the toughest examples in the Guide. About 200 puzzles into Level 1, I can say that the puzzles are challenging, but only once have I had to use an advanced technique (and even then, it was because I missed something more obvious). I'm expecting a big jump in difficulty in the future books of this series. Still, the puzzles in this book are a lot more fun than what I get in my local paper, airline magazine, and the other books I've had.

From a presentation standpoint, this book is excellent. It's spiral bound, heavy paper, and has plenty of room for notes. They should've done this with the Guide too!
Wonderful puzzles with enough challenge. The best binding of all books I've tried. Really comfortable, easy to mark and hold. I only wish Mensa's guides had the same binding.
I thought I was pretty good at Sudoku when I could cruise through even the most difficult puzzles in a Will Shortz book without breaking a sweat. Then I got this book as a gift and it really put me in my place. I tried to solve a couple of puzzles and got stuck very quickly. I finally had to go get the author's Solving Sudoku book to improve my technique enough to handle these. Now I'm working these and find each one challenging but solvable, and finishing each one is gratifying. If you're feely pretty cocky about your abilities give this book a try.
I am disappointed with this series. The puzzles are not as challenging as I expected and tend to be a little boring. I use them as a go to when I have absolutely nothing else available.
This is a great book if you don't want to bother with the really easy puzzles included in most books. But 90% of the puzzles in it can be solved by scanning and basic elimination techniques (pairs, triplets, quads, integration). In the other 10% you do need to use one of the more advanced techniques Gordon and Longo describe so well in their "Solving Soduko" book. But if you're looking for a real challenge, skip to a higher level in the Mensa series.
The vast majority of sudoku puzzles that are labeled "hard," "expert," "challenger," are not really all that difficult. And in a surprising number of cases, they are downright easy. In the "Mensa Absolutely Nasty Sudoku" books, you will find puzzles truly worthy of the label "hard." The puzzles increase in difficulty throughout the four books in the series. It ranges from basic and intermediate puzzles and techniques at Level No. 1, to the most advanced techniques at Level No. 4, along with puzzles that require multiple advanced techniques each time.

I recently purchased the entire Menza series, and I have to say they've lived up to the Menza criteria. You have to focus and know your solving techniques to get through these without guessing or cheating. Do yourself a favor and purchase the book Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku: Hundreds of Puzzles Plus Techniques to Help You Crack Them All (Mensa) to help you learn the techniques used in these puzzles. I started out by letting my wife begin with Mensa Absolutely Nasty Sudoku Level 1 (Mensa), and I've been working on Level 2.
After familiarizing myself with the solving tips, I went to work on my Level 2. Usually I go straight to the back and try and solve the last puzzle in the book. That kinda tells me how difficult the book will be. That puzzle is still unsolved. I've now worked through the first 65 puzzles in Level 2, starting from #1. I've used the X-Wing technique frequently and also some Swordfishes to get through these, so you'd better be prepared. My wife is also struggling with her Level 1, but mostly due to inefficiant candidate marking and not staying focused on all possibilities while marking. Some of her puzzles have, however, still required an X-Wing to solve.
When I get really stuck, I also tend to use a sudoku tool called Simple Sudoku. This is freeware and can be downloaded from [...]. This tool will allow you to easily see things such as hidden pairs and locked candidates when you build in your book puzzles. Use the filters to find the X-Wings and Swordfishes, and if you still have trouble, the tool will provide you with a hint, although even the hints themselves can be a little difficult to figure out.
These books are definitely for the serious Sudoku puzzlers. I can only imagine how hard the Level 4 book will be, but I'll need to work up to that. Have fun with it!
These books are so nice! The puzzles are nice and big, and the paper is high quality, which definitely makes it easier. I concur with the previous reviewer, though. Volume 2 is not noticeably harder than Volume 1. However, Volumes 3&4 will wear you out! They did me (you might know all the crazy techniques I have yet to learn). The books are really well made and a pleasure to work. I enjoy them immensely, and I hope you do as well!!! :)
I like this series quite a bit, however, I'm only giving this one 4 stars because as far as I can tell, the puzzles are not any harder than those in the first level. For my next purchase, I'm skipping level 3 and going right to level 4. Hopefully those will be harder. See my review of level 1 for why I like the series.

Even more interaction—this time used in combination with other procedures…and alotmore heavily than in the first book.

Enjoy the puzzles and enjoy being forced to change rules. But I don't like the dark colors. These make it difficult to read my pencil markings.
I am a huge sudoku player and absolutely loved this book. It had a wonderful variety of puzzles that ranged from easy to extremely challenging. I would absolutely reccomend this book to anyone that loves the game and is looking for a challenge.

If you have become bored with regular Sudoku, then try this book. One must use a different type of thinking in order to solve the puzzles. Even some of the "easy" ones will drive you to throw your pencil against the wall. Carry an eraser with you constantly. Great puzzle book.
I have been getting a bit bored of sudoku, so when my cousin got me this book for Christmas, I couldn't wait to get started!
The new rules and twists that are in this book are a lot of fun! The different difficulty levels and different rules keep it interesting.

I've beaten this game and played it for many hours. Can't believe nobody else has rated it yet. It's just an electronic version of the game, and there's really no "flash" to it at all. You just play, win, and progress to harder games with less time in which to solve them. When you do win, you get no electronic "pat on the head" or anything whatsoever in the way of congratulations, really. I'll admit that the very last puzzle I could not beat fairly; I had to copy it to paper&solve it and then enter the results. I've played harder "paper" games but they aren't timed, so this was in that regard harder, but since I could solve it at all, it was in a way easier. Whatever. Features are pretty much lacking except "pencil marks" which is nice; pause&save would have been nice: all you can do is pause, not save, quit, shut it off, and load that same puzzle later on. Imagine not being able to save your progress in another game like, say, Baldur's Gate!!??! Idiotic.

(HORRIBLE installation and the game playing isn't that great!)

The installation is slow for such a small simple game as it goes through some sort of verification procedure in which it told me I had errors but loaded anyway. Once I was playing the game it's slow going because you do have to click on the actual number to input it. I didn't have grid line problems like the other reviewer but I found it hard to focus because of the way it highlights both row and column per axis point. It's disconcerting if you aren't used to thinking about the grid that way. The hint feature isn't a hint it's more like it will just do it for you. Also you can't get rid of the hint's input. So if you thought it would give you options or highlight a row or column then think again.

My main complaint however is that it will not allow you to play it without having the original CD in the drive. No matter what. I like to play music in my CD drive while playing games but I guess in their quest to make sure no one cheats them out of one cent my music or any other use I have for the CD drive is just not important. I feel totally ripped off by the company and will attempt to return the game. It got one star because you can actually play the game.
I am addicted to Sudoku, play online a lot and buy the books. This was my first CD purchase and I am very disappointed in it.

First, you can't just type in the numbers, you have to click on a number on the side of the grid and then click on a square to put it there. It's a very slow way to play and distracting. It's especially annoying as I keep forgetting to click the number and end up putting the wrong number in the grid. I suppose with more play I would get used to it, but I'm not really sure I want to bother.

Second, Sudoku grids need to have clean lines and be easy to read, and this isn't. I spend far too long trying to locate the numbers I have already entered. This doesn't happen with the online games I have played.

I think it must be a memory hog as it runs quite slowly and jerkily at times, my mouse overshooting a square quite frequently. Maybe someone with a newer computer wouldn't have this problem.

There's also no way to reset the statistics or edit users, or to pause a game so the timer stops while you answer the phone, etc.

It does have some good points, lots of games and several different levels, but overall I was very disappointed.
