I'll have to let you know if and when my daughter does indeed solve it. It was a Christmas stocking stuffer for my daughter who, it seems, is addicted to Sudoku puzzles. The size was perfect for a stocking stuffer, it combines the two most popular names in the entire history of puzzledom Rubick&Sudoku, and it is an outstanding value for the price. This cube is made very cheaply. The cube does not move easily at all, and feels quite junky. If you find it for a dollar, that is still too much money. Your best bet is to find an actual Rubik's cube. Then peel off the existing stickers. At that point, clean it and replace the old stickers with Sudoku numbers (or whatever theme you prefer). This review only pertains to the very colorful, goofy numbers version of the Rubik's style Sudoku cube. There is a black and white version of which I have no familiarity. To be safe, I would still recommend making your own from a Rubik's brand cube. Maybe even try a 4x4x4 or 5x5x5 cube for your custom made cube. I hope this has helped someone. This book contains page after page of fairly challenging but not impossible puzzles. I'm no expert, but I can generally manage the daily puzzles in our local newspaper. I've been able to solve a few puzzles in this book without resorting to any of the techniques referenced in the introduction (like jellyfish, finned X-Wings, Gordonian polygons, and turbot fish, to name a few), but others have left me stumped . . . for now. (The Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku, which I haven't read yet, promises to help.) This book is an ideal travel companion because of its size and format. It's fairly small -- about 6" x 9", 1/2 inch thick -- so it easily fits in my purse. It lies perfectly flat -- the spiral binding is is uniquely done so that the wire is exposed on the top&bottom of the book rather than the outside edge, and it works very well. The paper is thick, opaque, high-quality; the paper and the print on it can withstand anything your eraser can dish out (along with a coffee spill or two). The grids are large enough for scribbling numbers in the margins. The answers are in the back. Overall, at less than 3 cents per puzzle, you can't beat this for entertainment value! If I stick to "nasty" sudoku and stay out of the airport gift shops, who knows how much I can save! After fighting through the "Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku", my other Sudoku books were not a real challenge. To be fair, they actually weren't challenging before reading the guide either! I ordered the Level 1 and 2 books looking for challenges similar to the toughest examples in the Guide. About 200 puzzles into Level 1, I can say that the puzzles are challenging, but only once have I had to use an advanced technique (and even then, it was because I missed something more obvious). I'm expecting a big jump in difficulty in the future books of this series. Still, the puzzles in this book are a lot more fun than what I get in my local paper, airline magazine, and the other books I've had. From a presentation standpoint, this book is excellent. It's spiral bound, heavy paper, and has plenty of room for notes. They should've done this with the Guide too! Wonderful puzzles with enough challenge. The best binding of all books I've tried. Really comfortable, easy to mark and hold. I only wish Mensa's guides had the same binding. I thought I was pretty good at Sudoku when I could cruise through even the most difficult puzzles in a Will Shortz book without breaking a sweat. Then I got this book as a gift and it really put me in my place. I tried to solve a couple of puzzles and got stuck very quickly. I finally had to go get the author's Solving Sudoku book to improve my technique enough to handle these. Now I'm working these and find each one challenging but solvable, and finishing each one is gratifying. If you're feely pretty cocky about your abilities give this book a try. I am disappointed with this series. The puzzles are not as challenging as I expected and tend to be a little boring. I use them as a go to when I have absolutely nothing else available. The vast majority of sudoku puzzles that are labeled "hard," "expert," "challenger," are not really all that difficult. And in a surprising number of cases, they are downright easy. In the "Mensa Absolutely Nasty Sudoku" books, you will find puzzles truly worthy of the label "hard." The puzzles increase in difficulty throughout the four books in the series. It ranges from basic and intermediate puzzles and techniques at Level No. 1, to the most advanced techniques at Level No. 4, along with puzzles that require multiple advanced techniques each time. It's like a writing paper tablet, and you tear the pages out after you've done the puzzle. They are all printed on one side with the solutions on the back. Of all the puzzles, I enjoy doing these the best. I find them to be very addictive. This book begins with easy puzzles and progresses to more challenging ones. Answers are in the back if you get stuck and need a little help. My only complaint is a few puzzles don't really look like something I recognize. I've been doing pixel puzzles for a while. So I figured the smaller puzzles would be a cinch. But some of these are very challenging. I use logic and don't rely on the hints. But they are fun to read. This book would still be good for beginners because of the easy-to-read directions and smaller puzzle format. Minus one star for the terrible paper. I use pencil and my hands get black and the picture smears. Also for the discomfort because the book is too small to comfortably hold folded. A spiral bound book would definitely keep me coming back for more. oh boy.... I am 'almost sorry' I discovered these puzzles. Had never tried them before, spent hours the first few times I used the book. addicting! good mind-bending puzzles. fun. This book of hanje puzzles was great fun. Each puzzle was rated for difficulty...not necessarily related to the size of the grid. The resulting pictures have been pretty interesting. My only complaint would be the roughness of the paper. I've finally started photocopying the puzzles onto better paper. I'm pretty good at these kinds of puzzles, but many of the harder puzzles in this book took me several hours to complete--very challenging. For the most part, the resulting pictures were worth it. O'Ekaki, also known as hanjie or griddlers are great fun. This book as the previous books by this author is very high quality. The puzzles range from very easy to very difficult. Ratings are given as 1 pencil for easy to 4 pencils for difficult. There are not many 1-2 pencils.Those labelled 3 pencils actually range from fairly easy to quite difficult. Unlike some other books I have bought containing this type of puzzle, the paper is good quality so mistakes can be erased, and I haven't found any errors. Like sudoku, O'Ekaki (Paint by Numbers) provides an entertaining test of one's logic, using a grid as its playing field. But rather than leaving the player with boxes of numbers, O'Ekaki ends with a flourish: a fun piece of art that seems to magically appear when you've correctly darkened the final square grid. And each puzzle's title is an amusing clue to the picture that will ultimately emerge. The puzzle challenge on several levels, from beginning to expert, all resulting in a sometimes elaborate picture. And every one is designed by the inventor of O'Ekaki himself! And if you want over 1000 puzzles, this is also the game for you. Dr. Sudoku is a simple and barebones Sudoku game for the Game Boy Advance (and Nintendo DS), which, as mentioned, is quite simple. The game has 1000 puzzles, split among 20 levels, that range from the easy to beat, to the mindboggingly difficult. I've owned this game for several months now and I've only been able to defeat 150-ish puzzles so far. The game also includes a simple edit mode (called Original Mode) where you can create your own puzzles. Also, if you're stumped with any puzzle you're playing, you can start over from the beginning or quit the puzzle so you can continue later. The only two flaws with this game are that you can only save one custom puzzle at a time, and the game does not save your clear times for each puzzle you clear. Other than that, if you want a good Sudoku compilation without any extra fluff, you should get this. It costs about the same as three or four Sudoku books, has hundreds more puzzles, and you don't have to deal with using an eraser to fix your mistakes. Even some newspapers have started including Sudoku puzzles in their daily publications, and bookshelves are lined with book after book of Sudoku puzzle collections. Being unwilling to buy an endless supply of books, I picked up this Sudoku program, which came with a Kakuro program as a bonus. This Sudoku program is user friendly, pleasant on the eyes, and it does not annoy you with incessant chatter and distracting tunes. The interface is straightforward and clean and it allows you to just play your game - it stays out of your way and it is there to offer help when you want it. It does have some helps it can offer. You can get pencil hints, or you can check for errors. These hints come at a price, though - this particular Sudoku keeps score based on your solve time, and every request for hints reduces your score appreciably. There are three difficulty settings, from beginner to hard. The hard setting will challenge the average player but a strong player may find it to be insufficient in terms of difficulty. This is typical of most Sudoku programs though. There are definitely better programs out there if getting really hard puzzles is the goal. The beginner setting is very appropriate for anyone just getting started, though. I tried the included Kakuro and I did not care for it. The implementation was fine and it was similar in design to Sudoku, so the problem was not the application. The problem is that I do not like Kakuro as a game. I cannot blame the game manufacturer for that. If you want a good Sudoku program that has a pleasant interface and a good supply of puzzles, this is a good choice. It is priced right, it is a straightforward implementation and it has a very nice interface. If you happen to like Kakuro too, this program is for you. Sure, there are much more challenging implementations of Sudoku and if that's what you need, then take a look at some of the other offerings, but this one is an unbeatable value for what you get.
