My six year old is really into Rube Goldberg-type machines, and he's been wanting this ever since he saw the box in the store a couple of months ago. He was hoping to build his own "marble machines", much like a lego set would allow.

This won't do that, especially for a six year old. It has one really elaborate design and, to be fair, that design is pretty cool. But it took me (an adult with an engineering degree) about five hours to build. And now that it's built, it's pretty fussy -- it drops marbles frequently, especially if the kids happen to bump any of the wobbly parts. You wouldn't want to deviate from the book on this one. And there's no way a young kid would have the patience or ability to follow the directions. It's much more complicated and less forgiving than, say, a Lego set.

While the layout is pretty well-designed, the manufacturing and quality control are mediocre at best. The sound machine did not work out of the box. A couple of bigger plastic pieces are obviously bent (they look like they were laid on their sides while the plastic was still soft). Fortunately i was able to work around these problems, but the bend in the marble collector piece causes it to drop about one marble in ten. Which is frustrating...

My kids do like watching the machine operate, although they get tired of it quickly (you pretty much see everything you're going to see after a few minute). I'm hopeful that when my son is 10 or 12, he'll want to re-build this himself according to the instructions. Otherwise, it's 80 bucks and a night of my time for very little enjoyment.
Don't buy this toy. Our kids got this toy for Christmas and it's been nothing but a headache. It took 4 hours to assemble the first time. So it did take a genius to assemble!

But the real intelligence comes in repairing it frequently. It is flimsy and cheaply made. It does not stay together and we have to reassemble portions every time our children try to play.

And the marbles will not stay in the tracks. They end up rolling off the toy and all over the floor.

Save yourself the money. It's a shame that so many toys are cheaply and poorly made these days.
I thought this was going to be like Legos - build it their way first, then be able to build other ways. Well, no. First time to build it took 5 hours. It tells you this in the manual on page 2, but no where else. Once its built, its neat to watch. But making a new design? Maybe something simple, not so tall, without the overlapping tracks. The web site you are referred to has no additional designs for this set. And I could find no others on the Web. Overall, I and my two daughters are pretty disappointed with this toy. Especially after paying almost eighty bucks.

I sent this to my niece on her birthday and it was a big hit because she loves to craft. I used the others recommendations and I appreciate their reviews because they helped me choose a great gift.
My daughter wanted a jewelry box to put her treasures in. When I saw this I thought that it would be great for her to personalize her very own box. It was lots of fun and the quality of the paint was good along with the durability of the box itself. I highly recommend for any little girl.
I purchased this item for my niece who was turning 6. I liked that it was not only a jewelry box but that she was able to use her creativity to personalize it. She did the project the week of her party, so I know it must have been something that appealed to her because it just did not sit around in the box for a long time. I also asked her about how she enjoyed painting it and using it and I got the thumbs up! Her mother did mention that she had to hold the stencils for my niece while she painted them or they would move around, so a little one may need help with those if they choose to use them.
i bought this for my cousins 10th birthday she is currently very interested in arts and crafts. she just loved the whole idea of getting to personalize her own jewerly box. it comes with more than enough paint to finish the box and with a index that tells you how to combine colors. the red velvet is of excelent quality. this poduct is hightly reccomended by my self and my little cousin.
I thought this would just be a box lined with velvet - anyways that's what I used when I was a kid. This jewelry box has all the compartments of an adult jewelry box! Hooks for hanging bracelets and dangle earrings, 3 rectangular shaped compartments, a long ring and earring compartment, and a pouch for jewelry that doesn't fit into those places. It is lined with plush red velvet.

The box is put together, surprisingly, with tendon and mortise construction. This results in a strong, interlocking box that's not going to fall apart with use. I expect other manufacturers would just glue the end pieces and over time with handling, they will break.

The hinge opens the top smoothly. All the pieces line up perfectly and have been sanded so there are no rough edges. The base of the box has a wavey design that gives it a fancy touch. I'm delighted with this jewelry box for my niece.

I did the puzzles on my commute every day. As I finished a puzzle, I would tear the page out so I had less weight to carry! It's spiral bound.
This book is great for when you're so tired you can't possibly think anymore and can't do a medium-hard-level puzzle. And I guess if you're a fan of Sudoku in general you will have fun with this.

Now, I don't mean to brag, but I consider myself to be closer to the Medium-to-Hard level, so I was able to do ten puzzles in less than an hour. Granted, that's not a bad thing; it's just that I'm not a beginner anymore, so these were basically too easy. (And that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5)
Large hi-contrast print and easy to flip. I'm only an occasional user, not a true addict, but this format is excellent.

("Thinking Inside the Box - No Math Needed")

First of all,let me make one thing very clear.I am a big admirer of The Sterling Publishing Company.There is no equal to them in the number and high quality of books that they publish on puzzles.Check some of my other reviews on puzzle books and you'll find I've heaped praise on them for their efforts and accomplishments.However; everyone can have a 'bad hair' day.
The whole Sudoku scene took off here in May of 2005,in a little 'freebie' newspaper in boxes at transit stops.Over the next couple of months books started to appear in the bookstores.
I've written reviews on several of them and discuss what one should look for in a good one.First,there should be good coverage on the background of the puzzle,then good instructions on hints and methods for solving;particularly if one is just gettind started.Then the size of the grid should be at least 3"X3",preferably larger.By the way, The Toronto Star has just increased their grid from 31/2" to 5".Next,the paper should be much better than newsprint grade for ease of erasing.The puzzles should be graded in difficulty.One book I reviewed even gave completion times depending on skills.Another thing to consider is how flat the book lies as well as its size,particularly if you intend to carry it around.Finally ,there is the number of puzzles and the price.
Now what about this book.Competing books are flooding the shelves.If this book had come our in August or so ,it might not have been too bad.However,it has almost nothing in background or solving methods.The pages are too large,with 4 puzzles per page,and at this stage ,they're on the small size at 3".The puzzles are not graded and there are no time targets.The paper is not too bad,roughly typewriter bond grade.At 8"X10" it is too large to carry around and doesn't lay flat.
A couple of months ago books were coming out with 100-300 puzzles;last week I bought one with 1001 puzzles.So,about the only thing this book is 'with it' is that it has 944 puzzles.
In summary,this book is late arriving on the scene,nothing exceptional about it,several shortcomings and priced up there with others I would recommend over it.
Once again,I would reiterate that Sterling have published high quality puzzle books;and maybe Sudoku is just not their world.It's not that I don't think they couldn't do better ;it's just that they didn't.

Unknown 20 years ago, Sudoku ("single numbers") skyrocketed since 1984 as Nikoli Publishers (Japan) formalized rules for a 3 x 3 number grid composed of 9 boxes @ using 0-9 numerals but once within @ box&numerals 0-9 but once criss-crossing the grid. The 30 conferred numbers (varies 24-32) determines difficulty of finding&entering those 51 or so (49-57) which are absent. Not always conspicious, supplied numbers inscribe a symmetrical design.

"The Big Book...." consists of 944 puzzles, begins "easy"&progresses to "harder." The format of 4 (four) puzzles per page, each measuring 3" x 3" makes analyses, pencil entries&erasures (if needed) quite easy - and with practice, simple logic, (no math needed) insight develops to spot patterns&formations yielding clues to missing numerals (all answers in back of book). At inception, there is temptation to fill empty squares with every feasibility, - time consuming. In short order, identification of patterns leads to explicit techniques where speed evolves¬ations are few. In high order Sudoku, one of several chosen possibilities which, as puzzle becomes more complete, may prove to be incorrect, thus designating the alternative to be genuine. The sole equipment needed is a lead pencil&eraser plus an inquisitive mind which tunes in logic stations. In you are browsing for challenging experiences in mathematics, this is not that book. However, it is a good, non-pornographic mind memory book that'll help ward off Alzheimer's&is warranted compatible with all iPods. Of many books on Sudoku, this is my favorite.

The book is OK, though overpriced. I mean, it use good quality paper, but you can buy a book with one hundred puzzles, printed in a cheaper paper, with the same quality of puzzles, for about fifty cents, in the stand of your local super market (not all of them would be as challenging, but some will).
I love Samurai Sudoku's! I have been spending money at the grocery store for a year now to buy a book that only has a handful in it. I was so pleased to run across this whole book of Samurai puzzles! It is good and all, but the puzzles do not increases in difficultly. They are all basically at the beginner level and not challenging for someone who has done loads of Samurai's in the past.
