『"Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz retired from the cartoonist's life early in 2000, and indeed left a few loose strings hanging among his chronically dissatisfied characters. He never did, for instance, cut Charlie Brown much slack in the romance department (or let him kick Lucy's football, for that matter). Sympathetic readers might have taken note of a story in the press just before Schulz said farewell, in which the inspiration for Charlie Brown's unrequited love interest--the never-seen, too-distant, "little red-haired girl"--was identified as a woman who turned down a marriage proposal from Schultz a half-century ago. That bit of biographical detail now adds poignancy toBe My Valentine, Charlie Brown, a 1975 television special built upon years of Valentine's Day "Peanuts" strips. This half-hour show finds Charlie Brown suffering, typically, the ignominy of receiving no hearts-and-flowers greetings while the rest of the gang, including Snoopy, spend their day sorting through piles of love notes. (Beautiful product!)
『I have used many products on my fine, straight, thin hair over the years. I saw the infomercial and thought ... this is another gimmick. But a friend used the product and loved it, saying it was the best thing she's ever used on her hair, so I tried it. It is by far the most amazing my hair has ever looked and felt. It isn't like any product you have ever used before -- it is so gentle and smells natural and pure, not synthetic, and your hair feels weightless when you apply, and afterward. It's hard to describe how wonderful it feels, but if you use it, you are in for a treat! I also use it on my dog (suggested) and even she feels/looks/smells great. I can't imagine using any other product again.』

And I did go through the bottle in 2 weeks, not sure how it is supposed to last you for a month? Then I tried my regular Pantene and actually it felt softer then Wen. Overall, it was not worth it for this price.』

『I too saw the infomercial on the Wen hair care products. I have very fine hair, color treated, and wanted to make my hair as healthy as possible. I have used Wen for about 3 weeks now. In the past, I would have to wash my hair daily or it looked awful - even with use of good product and conditioners. Since Wen, I find that washing my hair daily is not necessary. Even though you need to use quite a lot of product (and no, you do not need the amount they suggest), I'm finding it is lasting quite a long time. That is one benefit to be sure! My hair is extremely soft, with less fly aways than before. The other difference I notice is the shine! Has anyone asked me what I'm doing for my hair because it looks fabulous? No... that certainly has not happened. So, I'm liking this product - but it is not the magic bullet... at least not yet!』

『I liked this stuff decently enough. I admit, I was lured in by Jenny Garth's fabulously shimmering hair on the infomercial. (I love her!) So lo and behold, I was about to call the number and order it on the phone but the bargain hunter/product investigator in me was screaming "Wait!!...look online!!" So I did and found enough good reviews here on Amazon to entice me into ordering it. I was so excited when it got here I immediately used it. I liked the fact that it was so rich and creamy and smelled delicious. However, I am a quick shower taker because I am usually in a hurry to get somewhere and found that it took a bit longer to pump out 40+ squirts of product, apply it to different sections of my hair, comb it thoroughly, wait 5-10 minutes for it to take effect, then rinse it ALL out with cold water.... I felt like I was in the shower FOREVER! And I left the shower freezing! It definitely woke me up but it's the middle of winter!! But I have to admit, my hair felt good and I even got a complement on how "Hollywood" my hair looked -- all healthy and shiny looking on that very first day! No joke! I was super happy and excited so I kept using the Wen for another few weeks despite the time it sucked away from me, reveling in that ONE compliment I got. After a few weeks though, I started to notice a lot of dandruffy flakes on my scalp. I'm not sure if it was the Wen or just plain old winter dandruff but I had to stop using it because I wear a dark uniform at work and the flakes were getting unmanageable! As soon as I switched back to my old shampoo and conditioner, flakes were gone and I HONESTLY couldn't tell a difference between my Wen hair and my plain old shampoo hair *shrug*. Overall, it did what it said it would do for the most part, but my hair didn't seem any more fabulous in hindsight. I can't afford to spend an extra $20 a month on my hair, which would come out to $240 a year! No thanks.』

『I bought this mask for my husband to help him sleep during the day when he works night shift. It works well as for keeping out the light, etc., and he does wear it. However, it slides off his face while he is sleeping because there is only so much you can tighten it to fit. Also, the velcro fastener in the back is not comfortable to lay on while he is sleeping.』

『When I try to sleep at night, I need it to be absolutely dark. Unfortunately, I have a roommate that has a ton of technology that has a tendency to glow. At night, you could turn off all the lights in the room and there would be an soft glow of LED lights all around me. After I got the mask, I have been able to sleep so much better, the lights are completely blocked out and I can finally get some peace. The mask is very comfortable and fits snugly around my face.

The only downside to this (as I'm sure with any other mask) is that I can't sleep on my side. It tends to get pushed into an uncomfortable position. I've learned to sleep on my back, but I would have preferred something that could accommodate other sleeping positions. Besides that, this is a great product!』

『Fantastic product, totally blocks the light except for a tiny space around the nose (I have a relatively small head), doesn't press on my eyes. Pretty much functions exactly as it should. I will say that if the room is warm, the mask can be too warm, since it's not made of a really breathable fabric, but that hasn't been a problem for me yet.』

(Better than the average eye shade)
『While I found that this eye shade has some well thought out aspects (domed eye cups to allow free eye movement, soft padding that effectively blocks out most ambient light and easy to use velcro elastic straps)I do believe that there is room for improvement:
1) Light still strays under the eye shade through the nose opening. I would like to see more material or possibly a moldable nose area
2) The velcro straps are nice, but I would like to see the straps to be a little longer. I have them all the way on the ends of the velcro and the eye shade still exerts pressure around the upper part of the eyebrow
3) In order to fit the eye shade, the elastic band needs to fit over the tops of my ears. While not a deal breaker, it is uncomfortable.

But when I think of the alternatives, this eye shade does the job...and at $8.00, it's worth putting up with these little idiosyncrasies!

(It's like angel kisses for your hair)
『I didn't want to love this product. It's true. But with claims of a complete hair transformation after only one use, I had to break the infomercial barrier and purchase the product.

Upon the first use, I found the "cleansing process" uniquely odd. There indeed was no lather to speak of just as the product claims. I used my previous shampoo philsophy of less is more because 24 pumps seemed like far too much product. I left it on for the duration of my shower and rinsed it out as recommended. Hair transformation was partially achieved. My hair was fuller and shiny and not fly-away. (it's dead of winter 'round these parts... killer on a gal's hair) But, because i didn't use enough product as recommended, I didn't achieve my optimum results.

I learned during my first experience that you should follow the instructions as specifically as possible. Go the distance! Once you follow exactly and use the maximum number of recommended pumps, you too will achieve hair greatness. The fact that it costs as much as a small island to purchase is irrelevant! For the win!

『I have been very pleased with the WEN Sweet Almond Mint cleansing conditioner. My hair is fine and I have a natural wave to it. I use about 15 pumps for just above shoulder length hair and leave it in while I finish my shower. Before drying my hair, I use the WEN Sweet Almond Mint styling creme on the ends of my hair. I live in a very humid climate and the WEN cleansing conditioner stops the frizz and give my hair body. I would recommend this product to anyone with fine hair that frizzes easily. The reason I didn't rate it 5 stars is I still feel the need to use a regular shampoo about every 4th or 5th time I wash my hair, so it doesn't go limp.』

『When I used this product for the first time I noticed right away the shine my hair had, something I never noticed before with regular shampoo. It also helped with hydrating my scalp, because of a med I am on my oily skin and scalp became very dry and itchy. My scalp was to the point of bad dandruff, but the cleansing conditioner moisturized my scalp really well and after a few uses my dandruff was significantly reduced, a little longer and I hope it will disappear. Another thing I noticed was much less hair breakage. Before I was combing and brushing out so much hair on a daily basis that I was beginning to panic (another side effect of the med), but after several uses I have notice much less hair in my comb, brush and tub drain.
I wash my hair every 2 or 3 days and my hair length was half way down my back. While following the direction I used the recommended amount and I noticed that after 4 or 5 uses half of the 16 oz. bottle was gone. YIKES! My last time using the cleansing conditioner I tried using two fewer pumps for each section and I left out the 2 pumps I was using as a leave in conditioner. My hair was just as soft and shiny as it was the previous times and I saved 10 pumps. I do try to leave it in for as long as I can to take advantage of the hydration.
I am looking forward to trying out the lavender cleansing conditioner next and now that I got my hair cut short I am also looking forward to using much less of the product so it will last longer.』

(Not life changing, but still a great product!)
『I bought this because I normally buy Purology for twice the price (not including the shampoo that I would have to buy with it) so I thought I would give it a try. I was very skeptical of it because it seems from the reviews that it only works really well on thick dry hair, and I have very thin and oily hair. It left my hair very soft, no fly aways or frizziness (which is usaully a bi problem for me) and allowed me to dry my hair naturally, which I havn't been able to do since I was young. It left my hair feeling shiney and so soft that my husband and my friend could not stop touching it.

The reason that I would only give it 4 stars is because you have to use a lot of product and it is a pretty lengthy process. Also the next day my hair was pretty oily so I would have to wash my hair every day (I usaully only wash twice per week). Jury is still out on whether I will continue using this as it may end up being more expensive than my other shampoo, since I have to use more of it and more often. Overall it really is a good product and would recomend to anyone who has the time and money. Make sure to follow the directions to a T though. I think some of the other bad reviews were because they didn't rinse their hair long enough before and after applying the product.』

(Screen Bubble Fix)
『Re: bubbles under the screen protector. Remove the protector and clean both the screen protector and iPod screen. Take a clean makeup brush (or paint brush for you guys) and dip just the tip of it into some corn starch or baby powder. Now hold the brush near the iPod screen and gently blow on the brush. Fine particles of corn starch will cover the iPod screen. If you get any globs or large dots of corn starch, start over. You want a very, very, fine mist of powder. Once that's done, reassemble the screen protector. Voila! No more bubbles.』

『Got this case for my son and it has worked perfectly. Provides great protection for his itouch. The only issue I have is the screen protector gets moisture behind it. I saw some comments about this and it is a problem. However the protection it provides the device outweighs this issue.』

(The perfect case for younger kids)
『This is the perfect case for kiddos and others who are hard on electronics. My 10 year old's touch has been dropped, not a wimpy drop on to carpet but a full on drop onto concrete from 4 foot height while he was playing a game. It's also spent the night outside at 10 below in a *very* windy snow storm. I found it the next morning encrusted in ice, brought it inside took the touch out of the case warmed it up for an hr and it started right up. The gripy outer skin is easy to keep a hold of too.

Cons;It syncs/charges with cables but not in docks.
The protective screen kinda gets air bubbles between the touch screen&protective screen. That doesn't seem to interfere with my son's game play.
Regardless of the con's, it is worth it for the protectiveness.

『I bought two of the Otter Boxes (one for me, one for my husband) this past summer to protect our new 2g iPod touches. I needed something that would survive a curious 2yr old - and also survive my husband. Not that I'm recommending testing this out - but both iPods have been dropped (I'm sad to say multiple times) without any damage. I'll give up a bit of screen clarity (that's just the nature of screen protectors) and ease of docking for a really well built case that's tough as nails. I have a bias here. When this award was named the Newbery winner of
2007, I glanced through it, asked why, and decided I wouldn't bother
buying it.

Flashforward to the present, I as a teacher desperately need an
activity to go with my discussion of the history of children's
literature. And Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! (Are the exclamation
points really necessary?) flashes into my mind. Fine. I'll use it.
Guess that means I'll actually have to read it.

The foreword begins, "This is a part of the book that most people
skip." Yes, yes it is. "This is the foreword--the part where the
author tells why the book exists and why the reader might want to read
it. And you can skip it, if you'e in a hurry." I want to, I really
do. But I'm too nerdy for that and I read on. I learn that Schlitz is a
librarian for a school that only has 17 children to a class, that as
they study the middle ages the students have opportunities to build
mini-catapults and castles, bake bread, tend herbs, to compose music
and illuminate manuscripts" (p. viii) and it makes me want to cry
because many classrooms across the country, around the world can't
afford the resources or time to do such wonderful exercises. What do
those classrooms get? I wish I could say this book, but that's
probably not true either.

I kept reading, which proved to be very important since in the first
monologue of Hugo, The Lord's Nephew, I learned that 'Friants' are
boar droppings" (p. 2). Very important. Then I tried to imagine
seventh and eighth graders saying "Followed his fraints straight to
his bed and found it warm." I struggled. I suppose if framed
properly students could have fun with it. At the very least, a
teacher could say at least the friants weren't warm and steamy.

While looking across the interconnected 19 monologues and dialogues of
children and young adults living in the Middle Ages, Schlitz does an
excellent job of showing the differences among the classes and gender (and to a lesser degree, religion).
Race remains completely unaddressed (It probably would have felt
forced to try to incorporate). Schlitz makes an effort to make the
characters relatable. The unfortunately named Taggot has a crush on a
boy. Jack the half-wit is bullied and wants a friend. As I read on,
the monologues grew on me. While I still think a teacher will have to do a bit of work to get their students to engage with the text, there are a lot of uses a teacher could use.


Activities to Do with the Book:

Students could actually perform the monologues, with attention to whose characters
know whom and how they react to one another as they share the
performing space.

If students are having trouble with the language, they could
re-present the monologues in another time, with modern language,
perhaps as journal entries. This could be used to show some of the universality of the conflicts.

Students could discuss life in the Middle Ages, the crucades, how the
upper class maintained power in the medieval village, the
timelessness of abuse, cheating, bullying, friendship, the political and economic reasons for going to war and on and on.

"It was from novels that I learned that history was the story of survival: even something that sounded boring, like crop rotation or inheritance law, might be a matter of life and death to a hungry peasant. Novels taught me that history is dramatic. I wanted my students to know that, too" (p. ix).

This book won the Newbery in 2008 and I am just now getting around to reading it because the book's description didn't appeal to me initially. What a wonderful surprise to discover a book with wonderful stories interspersed with valuable and interesting tidbits of information about life in a medieval village. If you want a real treat, listen to the audio version produced by Recorded Books. It is truly superb!』

『Take all the depth of knowledge about village life in Medieval England, and then give it life, personality, and even fleas! The author is a librarian who wanted to create a play with equal parts for more than 20 students. The result is a series of monologues (and a couple of dialogues) that jump off the page with characters whose opinions of their own life and others around them is shaded by their own circumstances and what life is like in the village.

You would never know how intriguing, entertaining, and compelling this book is without opening it. It has the color and vivid drawings of a book for a much younger child, but the reading level is intended for about 8th to 10th grade. An awesome book to bring a dry history lesson to life.』

(The Purpose of Reading)

What a fun read! Her love of historical fiction was evident as she interspersed some background information regarding the cultural history of this Medieval time period she shares with us. I learned a lot while being entertained and those are the two main purposes of reading. How marvelous that Schiltz was able to incorporate both!

(I didn't know a bra could be so comfortable!)
『I have typically shopped for bras in outlet malls...so I had never considered spending so much for one! My daughter in law introduced me to Le Mystere Dream Tisha Lace when she requested one for her birthday. When I read the reviews I became intrigued, and ordered one for her, one for my daughter and one for myself.
It is so light I hardly notice I have it on. It does not add 'padding' so it fits well, and is indeed a terrific T-shirt bra. So, I ordered another for myself.
It washes well,as I have a front load washer. I don't think I would put it in an agitator washer because I would not want to see it get ruined. I do not put it in the dryer.
These are my favorite bras, and I expect I will get more when colors are discontinued and go on sale.
Purchasing thru Amazon.com allowed me to find all of our sizes on sale!

(Love these mittens - universal thumbs! Hooray!)
『I love these mittens. I have three pairs for each of my children. The mittens have a "universal thumb" - which basically means there is no hunting around for a left mitten and a right mitten - you can grab any two mittens to make a pair. It is genius!

The sizes run a little large. I have the toddler size for both my children (2.5 yrs and 1 yr). I just tuck the extra mitten into the younger child's coat sleeves so I don't have to buy new mittens next year.

They are nice soft fleece and quite warm. We love them.』

『So the term "infant" is somewhat ambiguous. I take it to describe someone under the age of 12 months (after which point I would consider the individual a "toddler"). Well, suffice to say, if you are looking for "baby" mittens, keep looking.

The good: Well made, nice material, good design.

The bad: As implied, the sizing. I bought these for my son, 8 months old, who normally wears 12 month clothing (28", 20 lbs.). These mittens are BIG on him-- there is no way they are staying on. Being rather petite, I may be able to fit my own hands in these pretty comfortably. Okay, that is a slight exaggeration, but not much. These mittens should be labeled and described as "toddler mittens." I would guess that my son will be able to wear these in about 12 months, so perhaps we will save them for next winter. Basically, these are meant to fit an 18 month-3 year old hand, not a baby's.

They get three stars because the material is nice and the design in good (I mean, who puts individual baby fingers in gloves?!?-- some manufacturers expect parents to do this?!?), but the sizing should be more descriptive.』

『I received this little beauty this past Tuesday and have already used it twice! It got here really fast and was not damaged at all. The griddle is very large which is great for big crepes! (less to make!) I used to stand for ever and make crepes and couldn't keep up! Now, they cook so quickly that I'm actually waiting for everyone to eat theirs! I was having troubles using the wooden spreader so I looked it up on youtube and it was clear sailing from there. A little tip that I do and haven't had a bit of problems, is I put a little vegetable oil on a paper towel and in between crepes I wipe down the griddle and have yet to have one stick! The unit cleans up easily. I totally recomment this! The price is amazing! I will be ordering the wooden stick for flipping the crepes next! Happy creping!』

Instructions were clear, and the inclusion of a wooden batter spreading dowel meant I had everything needed to attempt to mimic the pros. 『And that is pretty much true. I have a hound that chomps frogs, has licked tractor oil, goes after the peanut butter on mouse traps (that's a sight to see), and even swallowed a medium-sized allen wrench (got him to force it out before it made it to the stomach).

But that old saying that a dog will eat anything is definitely proven false with Newman's Own Organic Salmon and Sweet Potato treats. Who thought this one up?!

If a dog who has a fancy for petroleum won't even eat these things, you know they really have to be bad. Plus, I don't really think a dog cares if something is organic or not. Maybe this is good for one of those little mini-dogs they have in Manhattan, but real dogs drink beer and eat beef.』

So, the actual size of the treat should not be an issue for those with large or small dogs! As far as taste--of course I can only rely on how well our dog likes them-she loves them. 『I took a chance on buying this CD without knowing much about what it would contain. I was familiar with most of the song titles but was hoping it would contain mostly instrumental versions. Some of the songs included singing, but they weren't too bad and most of them were instrumentals. The best thing was that these were original recordings (remastered), not remakes. If you like Big Band music, with emphasis on the music, I think you will be very satisfied with this CD.』

(*Wonderful Music* That's Stood The Test Of Time!)
『When I was a small child I remember hearing songs like "In The Mood" and "Stompin' At The Savoy" and taking an immediate liking to them even though they were recorded some 30-40 years before I was born.

As an adult and listening to them now on THE ONLY BIG BAND CD YOU'LL EVER NEED, I'm amazed that those songs haven't lost their magic or charm. In fact, I like them even more. You just can't help listening to this CD and not tap your foot and/or bob your head.

The beat is infectious and uplifting and I see why this music has such a long shelf life. Add songs like "Sing, Sing, Sing," "It Don't Mean A Thing," "Tuxedo Junction," "I'm In The Mood For Love," and "Ya Gotta Try," though the latter was recorded in the 70s by a modern big band, and the CD lives up to its name.

Of course, I'm sure that this is just a great appetizer to even more tasty treasures waiting to be discovered in the swing/big band category of music.

The songs included were recorded from 1927-1977. The reason I deducted one-star is because of the murky sound quality on some material that was recorded before the 1940s. I know that this is a limitation from the source material and can't be helped, but I also know that some customers won't appreciate that muffled sound.

I'm sure that most--if not all of these songs--have been re-recorded by other orchestras/bands but with this CD you get the originals.

THE ONLY BIG BAND...CD comes with a small booklet with an intro and information on each track to learn more. Very enjoyable. Might I also suggest Hooked on Swing CD. This came out in the 80s and contains re-recorded medleys of some of these classic swing/big band songs and sounds great! The perfect intro to this music of yesteryear!』

(Whitmore's agenda gets in the way of the movie.)
『The Walking Dead (Preston A. Whitmore, 1995)

On its face, The Walking Dead wants to tell us the story of a platoon in Vietnam who are sent off to rescue some POWs. And that would probably have been a pretty cool movie. What we get, however, is anything but. Instead, Whitmore (best-known for his next project, the Laurence Fishburne vehicle Fled) uses the flimsy framework of his story to explore any number of stereotypes, conspiracy theories, and flights of fantasy. It's interesting to compare the movie to Dead Presidents, the Albert and Allen Highes film released later that year, which turns this on its head (the Vietnam footage, instead of frame, is flashback); the Hughes Brothers cover much the same ground, but do it far better.

Here we have five soldiers. At the top of the food chain is Barkley (The Inkwell's Joe Morton), current sergeant and former priest, and arrayed under him are wise-cracking Brache (Malcolm and Eddie's Eddie Griffin), studious Cole (House of Payne's Allen Payne), earnest Brooks (Menace II Society's Vonte Sweet), and dangerously unstable Corporal Pippin (Instinct's Roger Floyd). The five of them realize something about the mission stinks from the get-go, but we spend far less time thinking about the mission than we do about how all these characters got to Vietnam in the first place.

I've described a number of characters as two-dimensional over the years, but I'm not sure I've ever seen characters define the trait as well as these do. Everything that happens in Vietnam is right out of a bad superhero comic, while everything that happens homeside is a tale of injustice and woe (except Pippin's tale, which is obviously meant to convey his dangerousness and instability).Even if you did manage to bring yourself to care about what goes on in this movie enough to try and predict what was going to happen, after the first tale of life before Vietnam and the first couple of Vietnam scenes, you'd be more than able to figure out the progression the movie would take; the only suspense becomes what order the tales get told in as they escalate in their woe-is-me status, and how silly the situation will get in Vietnam.

As I said, Dead Presidents covers much of the same ground, in that odd lattice of coincidence that seems to hang over Hollywood (think about The Lost Boys and Near Dark being released in the same year independent of one another, or Mission to Mars and Red Planet). The difference is that the Hughes Brothers understand how to write realistic characters and realistic scenes in a way that seems entirely lost on Whitmore (who also wrote the script). As a result, the Hughes Brothers put out a movie that is one of Hollywood's neglected treasures of the nineties. The Walking Dead, on the other hand, firmly deserves the oblivion to which it has been consigned. You'd do better leaving these bones moldering in the grave. *

『Did John Wayne show the Green Berets the way they truly were? Of course not. Did John Wayne fight Guadalcanal the way it was really fought? Of course not. In The Red Ball Express, how many of the drivers were black. Do, don't tell me there can't be a movie called The Walking Dead and it has to be about some real soldiers. This was a good movie with good actors. Eddie Griffin gives a good showing in this movie, as does Allen Payne and Courtney Vance.
My only fault with the story was to have them smoking marijuana in the field. That's something that would not have happened in Vietnam. 'Charlie' would have smelled them way way back. Otherwise, I enjoyed this. It is one of my favorites along with Siege At Firebase Gloria.』

『I always have to debunk those negative remarks when it comes to military movies. First of all, the U.S. government is not going to allow a true movie to come about any mission. Secondly, the director got the idea from someone who was obviously involved in this situation so don't blame them, blame the person who told it. Black Hawk Down contained fallacies itself. Don't believe me? The next time you watch a "military" movie, watch it with a servicemember: They will find something wrong. ACTUAL REPRESENTATION IS NOT ALLOWED.

I enjoyed this movie immensely: The actors work well together and it imparts the idea that everyone has a reason for joining the military. It is interesting and I am happy to have it as part of my movie collection.』

『I am blown away that anyone would complain about Mountain House products...On a PACIFIC TRAIL CLIMB glacier/cold weather I had the chicken breasts and mashed potatoes with green beans that tasted garden fresh. The 2 other climbers used other products and tasted my dinner and could not believe the quality. My wife and I love the SeaFood Chowder when the power goes out at home. We use our jetboil climbing stove to heat water and have a great hot meal. A bit too much sodium in the food, otherwise the best! We have a years supply of mixed emergency food items from Mountain House stored.』

『The questions start as soon as you know thatYoung@Heartis about a group of singing senior citizens as they prepare for and then perform a concert with a repertoire consisting of songs by the likes of Coldplay, Sonic Youth, and James Brown. Can this premise, basically a novelty, sustain itself for nearly two hours? Will the director give in to the temptation to make it schmaltzy and sentimental? Will we be laughing at these oldsters, or with them? The answers: yes, no, and a little of both. Directed by British filmmaker Stephen Walker, the 2007 film takes place primarily in Northampton, MA, home to the Young@Heart chorus, whose average age is 80. Most readily admit to preferring classical and musicals to the pop and rock given to them by music director Bob Cilman, and some of the tunes--Sonic Youth's "Schizophrenia," Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can" (once a hit for the Pointer Sisters), and Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)"--prove especially vexing. But the singers' good natures and determination to master the material over some six weeks of rehearsals carry the day. Most of all, while they thoroughly enjoy themselves, it's no joke to them, and thus not to us, either. Of course, folks this age are bound to have health issues; indeed, the specter of death hangs over the scene like a banshee, occasionally making itself right at home. But the chorus members' insistence on carrying on in the wake of tragedy makes for a climactic concert that's moving and powerful--Fred Knittle, who had withdrawn from the group due to heart issues but whose beautiful bass voice remains intact, returns for this one show to deliver a version of Coldplay's "Fix You" that will bring a tear to the eye of the most flint-hearted cynic. Mixed in along the way are the group's "videos" of songs like the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated" and David Bowie's "Golden Years"; bonus features include deleted scenes and a brief featurette about Young@Heart's gig in Los Angeles. --Sam Graham
