With her last CD Long Night Moon, she was still in top form as she focused on becoming an adoptive parent. This CD on the Compass label is another strong set with Catie's unique sense of melody and her vocals at times breathless and vulnerable, at times swooping and ecstatic. "Sweet Life" has a crack instrumental backing with Andrea Zonn who released her own solo set Love Goes On singing supporting vocals on seven tracks. Alison Prestwood who has worked with Bonnie Raitt also contributes with a lively bass.
The set focuses on the joys of domestic life. On her web site, Catie is quoted about the sunny focus of this set, "There are lots of reasons to be unhappy or anxious at this time, and I think the album is as much about resilience as anything. In order to stay sane&keep moving forward, you have to be able to look at all the bad news around you and still see the beauty that is there alongside the trouble."
The title track echoes overcoming adversity, "I had lots of big plans for tomorrow, most of them probably won't come true, And maybe it's a bitter pill to swallow, but it led me here to this sweet life beside you." "Are You Ready to Fly" charms with memories of good friends who part when summer ends, "On we go down crooked roads, alone to who knows where, Burning this moment like a sparkler in mid-air." "For Now" shines soft&slow with a gentle melody like an adult lullaby, "Let go of all your heart's holding, everything weighing you down; And lay here with me, let the world be for now." "Happy" is a ray of sunshine that reminds me of a different song with the same name that is the excellent title track on David Carn's excellent CD Happy. "Sing" puts a smile on your face with Catie's resolve to get through adversity, "To sing through all the danger, through all the thunder&the pouring rain, we sing to draw a circle around us, when trouble has found us, sing." Catie covers Death Cab for Cutie's "Soul Meets Body" and adopts the lovely melody so completely that one has to look closely to see it is the only song on the set she did not write, "I want to live where soul meets body&let the sun wrap its arms around me." When I first listened to this set, I thought it was a good Curtis album. However, with repeated listenings, depth is revealed. This is a GREAT Curtis set. Songs such as the vaudeville-like "Lovely," the beautiful melody on "Fools" and the parental confusion of "The Princess&the Mermaid" allow for no weak tracks. Catie concludes the set with the powerful song "Over" that regrets an ending, "Every end is a beginning&the thread lies underneath; A river born in the mountains starts over in the sea; And if we're only, only tiny grains of sand, then hold me, hold me, Don't let me slip through your hands." Catie Curtis is in fine form on this outstanding CD. Bravo! Rerations < Sweet Life >

(Sleep, sleep , sleep)
(Very soothing) I really like the music and play it each day to unwind and relax. The music changes to bring you into a very relaxed state. This is great after a hectic day. I also play it when I have trouble falling asleep. This cd has helped me relax and sleep at night. It absolutly works wonders in relaxation and helping your body and mind become calm. I purchased this on the recommendation from a friend who had surgery. While preparing for my surgery I listened to the CD during the day, the day of surgery and afterwards when I returned to my room. I continue to use this as part of my recovery. Excellent CD and considerate it an enhancement to my quick recovery. I purchased this CD for myself for relaxation purposes. I am so delighted with it that I have purchased several for gifts. I have never really heard the entire CD because I always fall asleep, but it is most enjoyable and helpful for relaxing and healing. Wonderful cd....I find it helps take the stress away and allows my mind and body to relax. Dr Weil's voice is so calming and the music takes you on a healing journey. If we can reduce the stress in our bodies then we can heal. Highly recommend ! (James Taylor in concert-vhs)
(Not at the Blossom Music Festival?)
(The concert is great but many of original songs are missing.)
(Video is missing songs!) The best James Taylor Concert Video to date. However, it is missing some songs from the originally aired PBS showing.
This one has all the real warmth of J.T.
Can we get to see the unedited version on DVD 5.1 Surround ? This is his greatest concert (IMHO)! The only problem is...it's missing some key songs that appeared on the PBS version. The continuity has been hacked by the way this one has been edited. It just doesn't flow like the original. CAN WE PLEASE GET AN UN-EDITED DVD VERSION??? Here's a concert you could automatically re-sale to all the James Taylor fans that want the entire concert!!! I bought this thinking it was the concert at the Blossom Music Festival, its got the same title, why is this so? I'm very dissappointed. Thanks, a very confused James Taylor Fan. when i first saw this concert on PBS13, i enjoyed it much more then the pre-recorded video i purchased. it's missing many songs like,"Sweet potato pie","Mexico",&many others from the"Never die young"album. they should launch the original concert on DVD for us to see all the songs without interruption. I have a copy of this concert I taped from PBS years ago. My VCR was not a HI FI unit when I made the recording. So I purchased this concert video that was recorded in Boston. It sounds great in HI FI stereo. It is the same concert but this video tape is missing most all the songs from the"Never Die Young"album. My copy from PBS has many more songs on it. Why the difference?Jay James Taylor Live on stage at Boston's Colonial Theater performing a wide rage of songs from his celbrated career as on of America's premier singer/songwirters. Performances includ: Something in the way She Moves, Fire and Rain, Smiling Face, Only One, Shower The People, How Sweet It Is, Up on the Roof, Everday, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, Never Die Young, Steamroller, Carolina in My Mind, Sweet Baby James. customer 's review (Sweet November - Since I was 12 Years Old)
(Feels like the first time)
(A Vivid Memory)
(November is the Sweetest Month)
(THIS MOVIE ROCKS!) Where do I begin to tell you what a relief to see that this classic has been made available for home viewing. It was 1975 and I was 11 years old watching late night TV when a movie, I have never heard of, came on and I was immediately drawn in. Truly captivated by Anthony Newley and Sandy Dennis. I was exposed to my very first tear-jerker and to say I was touched would be a complete understatement. For years, every week I would scan through my TV Guide to find it but to no avail. This was a day when all Movies did not go to VHS after it's release. In my 20's I actually went to see Anthony Newley live in "Stop The World I Want To Get Off" (which he wrote and starred in) at a local theatre. My quest was to meet him and ask when I will see "Sweet November" again. After the show I begged to go backstage to meet him and my wishes were granted. There he was, a little man in a grey sweat suit still drying his hair with a towel. He was thrilled that I asked and responded that he had just had lunch with the writer of the movie the other day and "Sweet November's" future came up. No plans were set in stone at that time, he said. Fast forward, Anthony passed on and low and behold the rebirth of Sweet November came to life with Keanu Reeves. Unfortunately to my dismay it couldn't hold a candle to the original which will always have a special place in my heart. I am now 43 and oddly my daughter (my Angel) was born in November. Guess what I call her? Buy this movie! Rich I just thought of this and bought it instantly. If you want to draw comparisons, do so with Backstreet and Madam X but NOT the Keanu Reeves version. Much as I adore Keanu, his cannot compare to the Anthony Newley/Sandy Dennis combination that was the first Sweet November. I saw this movie when it opened in NYC (in those days to see first run movies you had to go uptown to the big theatres - local theatres would get them about a month or two later). I was 17 and remembered the last time I felt my heart break for a movie was West Side Story. I must thank Barry Eysman who wrote his review in 2002. It said beautifully everything I would like to say. My eyes filled up when I read it. I think the thing that made the original characters so appealing was they were not drop-dead gorgeous with leading man/lady good looks. They were believable. I felt as if I knew these people or at least could know them and relate to them. Since I saw this movie, every time I smell a new perfume on someone that appeals to me, I say "you smell like the main floor of Bloomingdale's". My college sweetheart, with whom I have reunited after 35 years, and I saw this unforgetable movie as a Sneak Preview in 1968. It was the most beautiful, but heart-wrenching movie I ever saw. The two of us remember crying in the car for a couple of hours after leaving the theatre. This movie shows true love never to be forgotten, with an ending that we shall remember for a lifetime. How wonderful there are reviews by customers who so much like this movie. who have also longed to see it again and who have waited for it to be available. I too love it, have remembered it vividly ever since it was first released, and think it a great thing to have it finally here.Anthony Newley and Sandy Dennis worked beautifully together. Theodore Bikel is so comforting, strong and protective. It is a tender, sad and beguiling story by Herman Raucher, every bit the equal of his"Summer of '42"and that is complimenting it indeed. A rare and heady blend of deepest emotion, of what love can do to persons, and what the terrible thrusting of the end of the world causes--the bittersweet romance, the gone away, but not in the heart ever leaving, the one special romance that aches the soul is always the finest, the most cherished. Unabashedly bigger than life, very much an old fashioned"romantic film,"filled with happiness and passion, and captivating. I've loved Anthony Newley for most of my life. Sandy Dennis is one of my favorite actresses. It needed no remake. Keneau Reeves in the Newley role? Oh, please, no. There is just this one and only classic November. It is impossible not to weep when Charlie so desperately wants Sweet November to stay, to capture the fleeting time, and to make a calander with only that month forever on it, caught in amber. Which is what this film has done. How can anyone not fall in love with a story in which Charlie names the sweater Sarah makes for him, because he loves it,"Rex"? New York has never been more captivating. Michel LeGrand's music is sublime. Fall and Thanksgiving and Sarah and Charlie and a most creatively sided box, and snow falling on the skylight. What more could a person wish for? The final magnificent song by Newley and Leslie Bricusse, sung in that electrifying Newley voice that will never be equaled, as the snow comes falling down around him on a park bench, his final goodbye, encompassing all the knowledge Sarah has given to him, for all hellos are goodbyes in disguise, breaks my heart every time I hear it. There can be no better, wiser"sentimental education." Even if Sandy Dennis did not look like my first love, I would have liked her immensely--tender, sad and trembly always it seemed, a delicate rose at the beginning of Fall, all the more lyrical for that. But November can't stay; it's why autumn is so magical. Now that both actors are so sadly gone, we have this gift of love and innocence to remember them by; a study of the kind of affection that counts, that gets into the bones, and joyous memories edged with the patina of sadness. New York in autumn has always seemed the best place in the world to me. This film has proven me right. Forever bless Anthony Newley, a giant of the musical stage, a sad sweet wise clown whose heart always seemed to be breaking; nevermore so than here. And Sandy Dennis,"mostly woman, mostly child." The heart remembers, for that way, November is never"wintry and gray". Thanks to grand films like this, we see firmly, just why. THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE! BETTER THAN THE REMAKE WITH KEANNU AND CHARLIZE! THERE AREN'T ANY GROSS LOVE SCENES AND THIS ONE IS BETTER PLAYED OUT. IT'S SUCH A SWEET ROMANTIC MOVIE. THE ONLY THING I DIDN'T LIKE THE FIRST TIME I SAW THIS WAS THE ENDING. BUT NOW I CAN WATCH IT OVER AGAIN. :) Combining peculiar whimsy with elements ofBreakfast at Tiffany's,Barefoot in the Park, andLove Story, this enjoyably nonsensical romantic comedy has built a small but loyal following since its release in 1968. LikeSomewhere in Timeon a modest scale,Sweet Novemberwas a well-kept secret among hopeless romantics until a remake in 2001 (starring Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron) made it ripe for rediscovery. Rarely have sweet schmaltz and tear-jerking melodrama been so delicately employed, and the whole thing would be utterly ridiculous if it weren't for the delightful casting of Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley--both at the height of their popularity, and both irresistible in their fairy-tale roles. (The costars reportedly battled off camera, which might explain their oddly energetic chemistry.)Sandy is Sara Deever, nearly 23 and hiding a secret that will eventually explain her strategy of inviting a new man to live with her--with platonic affection--for one month at a time. It's romance on an installment plan, and Charlie Blake (Newley) is Sara's catch for November--a British businessman and aspiring poet who takes up residence in Sara's quirky Brooklyn Heights apartment. He's quick to fall in love, and his devotion grows touchingly intense when Sara's secret is revealed. Some will reach for Kleenex, others will roll their eyes, butSweet November--like Sara, in all her eccentric vulnerability--has the courage of its convictions. Just when you think it's going to end predictably, it throws a curve ball that's memorably poignant.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Sweet November >

(Hunchback of Notre Dame)
(Underrated!!)
(An unexpectedly great movie)
(Pretty decent, but couldn't they have taken bigger chances with this?) Excellent movie, wonderful music. Grandchildren have thoroughly enjoyed this movie - very good message. I was highly please with my purchase of this product. The movie was perfect, and the seller lived up to all their promises. I would do business with them again. This is the single most underrated, unappreciated Disney movie ever made. The animation is superb, and the music is to DIE for. There is more soul, more energy, and more meaning in this movie than any other animated feature I have ever seen.
But beyond that, the direction is...breathtaking. The shots the directors chose, the frames they focus on...they leave you speechless really. I'm at a loss for how to describe them.
This is a masterpiece and it belongs in every movie-goer's collection. (I would not, however, suggest watching the "Making Of" bit in the Extra's section. It's silly and certainly meant for children or over-eager fans of Jason Alexander.) One of Disney's less famous films turn out to be a masterpiece. It's got great characters like the kind Quasimodo and the Gypsy. However, the song Hellfire is too dark. I have read "Notre-Dame de Paris (a.k.a. The Hunchback of Notre-Dame)" by Victor Hugo, and it has become one of my all-time favorite books. When I saw the Disney adaptation, I was a bit disappointed. Let me start with the good.
THE GOOD SIDE: I admire the beautiful animation (especially the accurate rendering of the Notre-Dame cathedral). It's all been done very splendidly. The songs "Topsy Turvy" and "God Help the Outcasts" are very enjoyable, while the songs "Hellfire" and "The Bells of Notre Dame" define the darker side of Disney. The gargoyles Hugo, Victor, and Laverne will provide excellent comic relief for the kids. And finally, I'm glad they took a very dark approach for a Disney film like this . . .
THE BAD SIDE: Unfortunately, this isn't dark enough. My main complaint is changing much of Victor Hugo's adult novel into a G-rated family film.
Here are some major examples: -Clopin is not a jester of the Festival of Fools in the novel, rather he is a protector of the outcasts. -La Esmeralda is sixteen years old in the novel. -Phoebus does not have a friendly relationship with the outcasts. -Claude Frollo is the actual Archdeacon. -Quasimodo is deaf. -Jehan does not appear in the film. -Pierre Gringoire does not appear in the film. -The novel does NOT have a happy ending.
I mean, come on, the creators of the Disney version could've at least taken some chances with this, make the audience see that animation isn't all about happy animals and dancing trees and etc. etc. But instead, we still get the same family-friendly atmosphere (except the Shrek films) in animated movies (The Incredibles, Mulan, Finding Nemo, Chicken Little, Hoodwinked, etc.). Ugh, what next? Skunks finding success in pop music? Snails becoming superheroes? The animators of today should adapt Miguel de Cervantes's "Don Quixote" or the Finnish epic "The Kalevala" or the Indian Epic "The Ramayana" and bring some dramatic approaches towards animation (whether it's 2D or 3D).
But who knows? The future still holds many mysteries. We'll never know what's going to happen next. The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids--something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo's (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo's classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a happier ending than Hugo's): Quasimodo, the ward of repressive monk Frollo, falls for a gypsy girl named Esmerelda (Demi Moore)--though she loves one of the king's guards (Kevin Kline). But they are all put in jeopardy by the wicked Frollo, whose secret passion for Esmerelda leads him to seek her death. At times too dark and even a shade kinky, something that may scare younger viewers.--Marshall Fine Inspired by Victor Hugo's classic novel, Disney brings the heroic adventures of Quasimodo, the gentle and lonely bell ringer of Notre Dame, to spectacular life. This critically acclaimed Disney masterpiece is an "uplifting, thrilling story with a heart-touching message that emerges from the comedy and song" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). At the urging of his hilarious gargoyle pals Victor, Hugo, and Laverne, Quaismodo leaves the solitary safety of his tower, venturing out to find his first true friend, the gypsy beauty Esmerelda. The most unlikely of heroes, Quasi fights to save the people and the city he loves and, in turn, helps us to see people for who they are, rather than how they appear. The star-studded voice cast includes Jason Alexander, Tom Hulce, Kevin Kline, and Demi Moore in a magnificent Disney musical from renowned composer Alan Menken.
