So far it looks like he may be allergic to chicken and maybe corn, neither is in this treat. Amazon has a better price on this than any other place that carries them. The only problem we have is now the dog tends to "guard" the hall chest where we keep the treats and gaze hopefully at anyone walking through. :-)

In addition to beautiful renditions of traditional and familiar classic carols like Hark The Herald Angels Sing, O Tannenbaum, and Carol Of The Bells, Natalie and The London Symphony Orchestra outdo themselves on Mel Torme's The Christmas Song, Sammy Cahn&Julie Styne's Christmas Waltz, and Leroy Anderson's immortal Sleigh Ride. My particular favourite, however, is their handling of David Foster and Linda Thompson Jenner's My Grown-Up Christmas List, which became a hit single in 2003 for Kelly Clarkson.

(A MAGIC Christmas CD) 『The wonderful father/daughter duet The Christmas Song alone is worth the cost of the CD. But the whole CD is great. Natalie's Grown Up Christmas List is one of the best versions--heartfelt, sincere (get out your box of kleenex, you'll need it). When she sings this song it is a touching plea for peace and increase human kindness. She doesn't just march through the lyrics in this song (or any song she performs, for that matter)--she LIVES them. I challenge you not to cry after the modulation of the song and the choir comes in.
What makes Cole's version of Sleigh Ride so great is the change of tempo. She has fun with the song, and that makes it a fun song to listen to.

He is sent to prison for five years after asking the court to appoint a lawyer and being refused. In current terms he would have been confined for life as it was his fifth felon conviction since he was 14 and broke into a store to get warm clothes in winter. This story is a strange one and it appears some young felons had named him patsy for this crime. After two years in prison he was lucky enough to be chosen as a constitutional law test case. Even more lucky than that, his lawyer won. In the retrial his conviction was reversed, because it seems that he sometimes ran the pool hall and had a set of keys. This movie was one of Henry Fonda's last roles and it showed his liberal life's work to a good light.』
(Outstanding portrail of an imporant piece of history) 『Many "jail" movies spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on prison life. Instead this movie dives right into the legal battle fought to guarantee all men the right to council (regardless of their ability to pay). Henry Fonda does an outstanding job of portraying Clarance Earl Gideon a small time hood and drifter falsely accused of robbing a bar/pool hall. Jose Ferrer plays Abe Fortas who argued the case on behalf of the ACLU and then later became a Supreme Court associate justice himself.』

He has captured the flawed character of Clarence Earl Gideon like no other actor.This seemingly inconsequential individual who changed the course of American jurisprudence through his appeal to the US Supreme Court for legal representation is portrayed by Fonda so convincingly and so assuredly that Fonda and Gideon become indivisible.
One is equally astonished that the High Court gave such consideration to a relatively minor infraction of the law, and in doing so, gave everyone like the obscure,impoverished Gideon the right to council regardless of their station in life.

In a little over 90 minutes students learn how the right to a lawyer in all cases was established, how important this right is, and they are entertained at the same time. Wonderful acting from Fonda, Houseman, and Fay Wray also appeal to film buffs. I'm glad to be able to get it on DVD as my VHS copies are starting to show their age.』

"Heaven Can Wait" is one of those gems that will make you laugh out loud, no matter how many times you have seen it before.
And if you want to see another hilarious movie about death (Really!) also pick up Defending Your Life, by Albert Brooks. Hmmm . . . these two movies would make a great double feature.

Most people tend to regard Warner Brothers as the house of choice when it came to noir, but RKO cranked out some real doozies, too.
Dick Powell forever shed his wholesome, goody-goody image when he played hard-boiled Detective Philip Marlowe. Hired to track down the ex-wife of nutty stand-over man Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki), Marlowe's trail later leads him into an altogether more puzzling case involving a priceless jade necklace, the sultry second wife of a millionaire (Claire Trevor) and her lovely stepdaughter (Anne Shirley).
MURDER, MY SWEET is a complete ride from beginning to end. Although the plot is downright convuluted and confusing, the film is compelling largely because of Powell's performance and the snappy screenplay of John Paxton (based on the original novel by Raymond Chandler).
Audiences would have forever pegged Dick Powell for his tap-happy roles in Busby Berkeley musicals like "42nd Street" had the character of Marlowe not come along and allowed a new side of his incredible acting range to shine through. He's remarkable in this movie. Likewise this film also established radiant ingenue Anne Shirley (from "Anne of Green Gables" and "Stella Dallas") in a sophisticated new light, although her career sadly ended with this film. Claire Trevor, that perennial film noir femme fatale, doesn't disappoint.

(Noir with an endearing sense of nerdiness.) 『As far as film noir goes, this is it. The contradiction of Raymond Chandler's gritty gumshoe Philip Marlowe comes across at the hands of Dick Powell far more easily than it did with either Bogart or Mitchum (who was in a remake of this film, years later). Powell's performance of the detective is lighter than others, and though he certainly doesn't evoke the feelings of menace that other actors do, I can't imagine anyone but him playing hopscotch with the tiles of a stately home.
Mike Mazurki's turn as Moose Malloy is fabulous - a real-life ex-wrestler turned meathead-for-hire-under-false-pretences. If you want a great strangulation, he's the man.
So why only three stars? As a film this is a beautiful work - the opening shots of a blindfolded Marlowe, appearing as if in front of a firing squad, are gorgeous. There's a lot of expertly-crafted noir stereotypical setups here. But the story seems particularly convoluted, and to not hang together too well. It's forgiveable in a book where your mind fills in the blanks, but on the screen it seems that something is lacking. It definitely helps if you've read Chandler's original before tackling this one.
One thing that could be a spoiler but isn't but sort of is: watch out for the drug scene. It's one of the most breathtakingly good:bad pieces of acting and camerawork I've seen. It's so close to genius and failure at once that its inclusion makes viewing of this film necessary.』
(Confusing,But Love Those Wiscracks!) 『This is considered one of the classic film noirs ever made and some think THE film noir. In recognizing that before I had seen it, perhaps I was disappointed because I expected more. Yet, I still own this DVD and enjoy watching it about every 4-5 years. Why? Probably the cinematography and "Phillip Marlowe's" dialog.
What I found was a very confusing film, at least in the last third of the movie as everything started to be explained. It almost got ridiculous in the last 10 minutes when Dick Powell ("Marlowe") explained the whole story. He talked too fast and it was next to impossible to follow. I guess I will have to view this more often to understand it better, or find someone who can explain it for my feeble brain.
The best part of the film was the cinematography, which really comes to life on the DVD. Someone did a very nice job restoring this print for this disc. That, and the general dialog by Powell, were fascinating. You could make a short book with all the wise-guy remarks made by "Marlowe" in this film - a lot of great stuff.
I just wish they had made a simpler story and made it easier for the viewer to digest all the facts at the end. 』
(Film Noir at its Very Best) 『RKO turned out some of the best film noir drama of the forties and fifties and did it with sound economy, capitalizing on multiple talent working in a coordinated fashion.
"Murder, My Sweet" directed by Edward Dmytryk falls into the above category. John Payton's script adaptation from Raymond Chandler's novel "Farewell, My Lovely" moves at a spellbinding pace as we see the world of detective Philip Marlowe, played by Dick Powell in a dramatic debut after a career as a song and dance man, unfold in Los Angeles. When he meets up with ex-con Moose Malloy, played by veteran pro wrestler and character actor Mike Mazurki, he becomes a marked man.
Powell's nemises are beautiful bad girl Claire Trevor and gang head Otto Kruger while Anne Shirley, as Trevor's stepdaughter, helps the detective find romance while providing him with the lowdown on the wayward blonde, who will stop at nothing to get what she wants.』
('MY ATTITUDE DOESN'T SEEM TO IMPROVE') 『
When Dick Powell made this movie his acting career astonishingly was at a very low ebb, but this movie helped revitalize the old song and dance man into a transformed 'noir' actor. He had a lot of help in this movie not only from an excellent script but also from some excellent actors. One of my favorites has always been Claire Trevor, and if she had not been identified, don't know that I would have ever recognized her as this dazzling, coniving blonde of the jade necklace.
Powell is given some very good, wise cracking lines, but underneath he is a teddy bear and that comes through at times, especially with Anne Shirley. One client says he doesn't care for Marlowe's (Powell's role) attitude, with Marlowe replying that he has had complaints about that before, but the attitude doesn't seem to improve. Along the way, and it is a confused way for much of the movie, Marlowe accuses or suspects nearly everyone in the cast, with the police always eyeing Marlowe as a possible suspect. Ring around the rosey, only death intervenes from time-to-time in this game. Everyone seems to have something to hide or some angle they are playing with Marlowe picking up easy money. As he says, some people are paying him to stay with the investigation, while others are paying him to drop the investigation. As many times as he is sapped and knocked out, one would think he would welcome grabbing the money and letting the thing solve itself. But as he says, ethics are involved, his mainly since he was originally hired to body guard a client, with that client turning up dead on Marlowe's watch. It's just another aspect of being a teddy bear underneath it all.
Rich good looking women, sleezy con men and thugs, a stolen jade necklace worth a cool hundred thousand never stolen, and plenty of guns leads to a full fledged Raymond Chandler group of writings brought to the Hollywood screen by RKO. When looking at 'noir' films it just doesn't get much better than this film.
If you haven't seen it you have missed a very good effort in both acting and writing.

Creator, writer, voice actor, Seth McFarlane's only crime is that he loves pop culture, MGM Musicals, Comic Books, Saturday Morning Cartoons, etc and there's nothing wrong with that. Those added non-sequitur clips that pop up in the middle of episodes is a clear indication of that love of pop culture. This reviewer thinks that some critics lambast the show because they wish they had thought up some of the stuff he lovingly lampoons and throws in. They aren't for cheap laughs, but it is to give viewers a fond rememberence of stuff they grew up with as children giving it a warped twist. Another obvious indication is using Adam West (aka Bruce Wayne/Batman) as one of the voice actors for the show. FAMILY GUY works for this reviewer because this reviewer is in tune with the warped, yet genius mind of Seth McFarlane.』

He is sent to prison for five years after asking the court to appoint a lawyer and being refused. In current terms he would have been confined for life as it was his fifth felon conviction since he was 14 and broke into a store to get warm clothes in winter. This story is a strange one and it appears some young felons had named him patsy for this crime. After two years in prison he was lucky enough to be chosen as a constitutional law test case. Even more lucky than that, his lawyer won. In the retrial his conviction was reversed, because it seems that he sometimes ran the pool hall and had a set of keys. This movie was one of Henry Fonda's last roles and it showed his liberal life's work to a good light.』
(Outstanding portrail of an imporant piece of history) 『Many "jail" movies spend an inordinate amount of time dwelling on prison life. Instead this movie dives right into the legal battle fought to guarantee all men the right to council (regardless of their ability to pay). Henry Fonda does an outstanding job of portraying Clarance Earl Gideon a small time hood and drifter falsely accused of robbing a bar/pool hall. Jose Ferrer plays Abe Fortas who argued the case on behalf of the ACLU and then later became a Supreme Court associate justice himself.』
(Fonda's Best) 『I've seen most of Henry Fonda's films and this ranks among his very best. He has captured the flawed character of Clarence Earl Gideon like no other actor.This seemingly inconsequential individual who changed the course of American jurisprudence through his appeal to the US Supreme Court for legal representation is portrayed by Fonda so convincingly and so assuredly that Fonda and Gideon become indivisible.
One is equally astonished that the High Court gave such consideration to a relatively minor infraction of the law, and in doing so, gave everyone like the obscure,impoverished Gideon the right to council regardless of their station in life.
As has been stated elsewhere, this film is both an entertaining and informative experience. It is a must see for law students and laymen alike. 』

In a little over 90 minutes students learn how the right to a lawyer in all cases was established, how important this right is, and they are entertained at the same time. Wonderful acting from Fonda, Houseman, and Fay Wray also appeal to film buffs. I'm glad to be able to get it on DVD as my VHS copies are starting to show their age.』

The writers brought in a confusing and unnecessary new character, a little boy named Seven. I couldn't believe how boring this new addition was, they quickly dropped the boy but the show was never the same. The writing had become really vile, childish, and just plain unfunny. This show was always a little raunchy and pushed the envelope but it became a joke and I lost interest halfway through the season. Season 7 is definitely a train wreck, seasons 1-6 are the ones I highly recommend.』
(Some great episodes in an overall good season) 『Season 7 is short of being great because of the awful Seven character. Episodes such as Movie Show, The Chicago Wine Party, The Wedding Show and Wedding Repercussions made the DVD worth getting for me in spite of Seven. Thankfully the annoying Seven was cut from the series and is some episodes he appears in scenes that are mercifully brief.
Also something that maybe worth noting: In the DVD version of Movie Show episode the usual credits are used instead of the one where the cast is in the theater pointing out people in the cast as it scrolls by.』

The characters were always given wonderful witty dialogue. However, in season seven you'll only find a few minimul jokes, a few good episodes, and mostly fillers in between. Overall, this is still a great show and a decent season. MWC will always set a milestone in the realm of sitcoms. Still enjoyable nonetheless because of the loveable cast of actors.』

According to an on-line definition, the "eau de parfum" is rated at 7 to 14 percent and the "perfume" at 20 to 40 percent. So, you'd have to be pretty well-heeled to afford this size in a perfume. Additionally, I find it difficult to swallow that Amazon's people would be so naive as to be hoodwinked with a "fake".』

She received it for Christmas two months prior to this review and I don't know that a day has gone by that she has not worn it at some point. While the music box is nice (and the music itself is of reasonable quality for an item like this), we rarely have it in the dress. My daughters would fight over it so I ended up just taking it out. The dress itself is of good quality, and daughter does not find it scratchy like some of her other dresses. The tulle is definitely of better quality than our other "princess" dresses. It is holding up reasonably well to continuous wear (although it is getting rather shredded on the bottom underneath the tulle, but she really does wear it every day). A few minor criticisms: 1. The velcro on the back does not stick, we have to safety pin it. 2(and this is my big one). It has to be hand washed. There is fluffy stuff around the collar that would not withstand the machine. When your daughter wears the dress as much as mine does, you really wish you could just throw it in the washer on gentle.』

(Great quality and stretch) 『These are thin stretchy satin gloves that are well-cut for little fingers. The sizing seems true to age given the wide rage of sizes little children come in. Great value as they seem to be durable and well-made.
I ordered the size 4-7 for both my (petite) 5 year old and (average) 2.5 and they fit the 4 year old well (there is some room for growth but the fingers are not obviously too long) but they are too large for my 2.5 year old. Since they do have stretch to them, I am going to order two more sets of gloves for both girls in the 0-3 size hoping that they will fit just a little more snug on both girls as I am using these gloves for everyday 24/7 wear to break bad habits (thumb sucking and nail biting) and would like them to be able to do every day tasks in them. (I do plan to modify the glove with some smashed in hot glue on the fingertips to add grippiness to fingers).

They will never return your emails and their staff are computer illerterate. If you call they are not very helpful. The person I talked to could not find my orders or emails I sent them (I sent 3). I was told they will ship whenever she finds the order (that was about 5 days after I spoke to them and 12 days after I ordered).
They will arrive in the required time line, but you will get them at the last possible day they are required for you to receive it. They ship over a week late with 2 day air. I wonder if I would have ever received it if I didn't call and complain.』
(Trying to save it but ...) 『A small guilty please I got on sale. I received it about a week and a half ago. I was surprised at the size of the box and tray the thirty pieces were packaged in. Very, very generous sized pieces.
So, I'm trying to save it by eating a piece or two at a time. Savor the flavor, since it has been quite some time since I've had any baklava. And, oh my, is this ever good baklava!
My suggestion is to put the box in the refrigerator. Take it out at least 20 - 30 minutes before you indulge. That way it brings these wonderful pieces to room temperature and the flavor comes back to full richness.
So, as I said, I'm trying to save it but ... the last fifteen pieces keep calling out to me.

The problem is that she's in her forties, still single, and lately, she's been thinking about having a baby. Only her lifestyle doesn't seem conducive to starting a family. That's where Erik Whitney fits in. Erik is the chef at the restaurant Dana Sue owns on her own. Even though they argue every time they are together, sparks of a different kind fly between Helen and Erik. Helen has a lot of decisions to make. Some of them she shouldn't be making on her own.
Helen and Erik's relationship lacks chemistry in Feels Like Family. Because they hide it, and because of Helen's secret pregnancy plans, it feels more like friends with benefits rather than a true romance. Serenity, South Carolina takes on a soap opera like feel in Feels Like Family. Divorce, single mothers, an abusive ex-husband, a secret pregnancy, and a marriage without love become a bit too much for one small town. The realism present in all of Sherryl Woods stories is there, which I love, but it's a bit overwhelming. I would love to read about Annie and Ty. They could have a wonderful story to tell.

(Too much going on) 『Lawyer Helen postponed family for her career and at 42, is wishing she hadn't. With no man in her life, but her two friends pushing her to sexy pastry chef Erik, she's not sure if she's ready to go the baby route alone. But when a client suddenly needs someone to watch her small children, Helen drops everything to step up to the plate, with Erik lending a helping hand. Erik left his job as an EMT after his wife died in premature labor. He went to cooking school and never really looked back - all he is sure of is that he doesn't want marriage or babies. When his relationship with Helen takes a sudden turn to passion, she sees that Erik is her answer to her baby dilemma. Of course, she neglects to run it by him before ending up pregnant weeks later. Erik insists on marriage, but as a successful divorce lawyer, Helen is resistant.
Adding more drama to the story is sous chef Karen's struggle with depression after being abandoned by her husband with two young children (and her resistance to let another man in her life), another sous chef coming to Helen to get her wrongfully deported husband returned to the US, and the deranged spouse of a client hell bent on vengeance against Helen, which puts her and her baby in danger.
To put it simply, there is far too much going on in the story that the plot gets convoluted and just drags on and on. Helen, the most intriguing of the three Sweet Magnolias is reduced to being wimpy and deceitful, and Erik far too forgiving. I didn't really get that there was any chemistry between them. The far more compelling story was Karen&Elliott's romance. I have found that when Woods produces a trilogy, the third often loses steam or has the responsibility to tie up far too many loose ends that the story itself suffers. This was simply an okay book for me - not one that would stand up to repeat readings.』 『Helen Decatur spent a lifetime setting goals—getting through college and law school, opening her own practice, becoming financially secure and establishing herself as one of the most highly respected matrimonial attorneys in the state of South Carolina. Alan Hirsch is someone I would like to meet personally to thank him for writing this book that changed my vision of my personal walk with Christ and what we should be about in our Churches.』
(Apostolic Genius, Indeed!) 『When I first read The Forgotten Ways, I told my friends I had found a book that had ruined my life. And I meant that in the very best way possible. Hirsch gives teeth to overused terms like "missional" by relying on the example of early Christianity for theology and methodology. Having a definite restoration focus in my theology, I've always looked to the history of early Christianity for inspiration, but this book comes as close as anything I've ever read to actually re-introducing us to what made the early faith so powerful. This is not just your standard postmodern deconstruction of modern Christianity. It is a scholarly, wise, and practical search for the DNA of ecclesia. I literally had to read it a few pages at a time in order to digest it all. And it is well worth the effort.
Others have written plenty about the book's content, so I won't bother with that. Instead, I will warn you that this book is dangerous. You really have to be disenchanted with the church as it is to accept these missional concepts. And even if you accept them, implementing them may prove extremely difficult - especially if, like me, you find yourself in an established church environment where too many people are content with much of the status quo. For me, this has widened the divide between the church as I have known it, and the church as it could (and should) be. But it is a tension I believe we need to endure. And there is hope, as Hirsch himself began this journey in an established church setting.
Much of the western church remains in denial about the decline we are in. Small churches tend to remain staunchly within their comfort zones, and mega churches rarely question the nature of their own methodology. Missional ideology seems destined to remain on the fringes for now. But not for long. The future hope of the church lies in her missional, spirit empowered past.』
(Thinking Again About our Ways of "Doing Church") 『This book is divided into two main sections: 1) "The Making of a Missionary and" 2) "A Journey to the Heart of Apostolic Genius."
The book's title The Forgotten Ways refers to two movements of God that Hirsch would like to see "reactivated" and they are the ways of the apostolic church and the ways of the house churches in China. He sees in both these movements what he calls "Apostolic Genius (the built-in life force and guiding mechanism of God's people) and the living components or elements that make it up." (18). He calls these components "missional DNA, or mDNA, for short." (18)
He states that the goal of his book "is to explore Apostolic Genius and to try to interpret it for our own missional context and situation in the West." (20). He sees what he calls "Apostolic Genius" composed of "passionate love of God, prayer, and incarnational practice" (21) along with the Ephesians 4:11 leadership ministry, true discipleship, structures that relate to the culture, and "appropriate conditions for these to be able to catalyze.' (21). 』
(Some right-on analysis and assertions along with some shortfalls) 『Alan Hirsch offers a critique of Western Christianity and encourages Christian leaders to return to the ways of the early church in order to reach the missional field of the West. Hirsch has fifteen years of experience pastoring churches and leading ministries in Australia. During that time, he has moved from working within a traditional denominational structure to helping develop more outreach oriented ministries that go to the unchurched with the gospel. His focus throughout the book is on identifying the "Apostolic Genius" of the early church and showing how Christians can discover it within themselves and apply it to their contexts. His assertion is that the established church must become a missional one that lives on the edge of chaos and has only the necessary organizational structures.
I think Hirsch conveys some insights that are crucial for readers to take away from this book and instill in their own ministries; however, I also think that Hirsh's critique and way forward must be tempered by a perspective that takes into consideration a larger picture of church history, theology, the human condition, ecclesiology and spiritual warfare. My honest response to this book is that it is poorly written and seemingly unedited; I think its narrow scope neglects important issues to bear in mind when considering that Hirsch seems more than once to suggest the jettisoning of the ordained priesthood, liturgy and institutional churches. Although Hirsch might respond that this is not what he meant; his book certainly seems to suggest that this is what he is saying.
For me, Hirsch's positive message is summarized in a quote from Hans Kung that Hirsch uses to introduce one of his chapters. Kung writes:
"A church which pitches its tents without constantly looking out for new horizons, which does not continually strike camp, is being untrue to its calling. ... [We must] play down our longing for certainty, accept what is risky, and live by improvisation and experiment. "
Hirsch's idea of Apostolic Genius includes six key actions/elements that reflect the early church's and China's underground church's distinct nature that leads to growth and expansion. These are the missional-incarnational impulse, an apostolic environment, disciple making, organic systems, and communitas. When these elements are in a dynamic relationship to each other, Hirsch contends that challenges acts as catalysts serving to generate Apostolic Genius. He elaborates on all of these elements. At the core of the Apostolic Genius is the Holy Spirit, his inspiration, gifts and invigoration.
As he critiques the church of the West, Hirsch identifies some real problems. I think his main concern is the consumerist ideology adopted by the church. Hirsch fears that consumerism has become the driving force within our churches. This force has caused the development of the "attractional" model of the evangelical church. Hirsch rightly exhorts readers to accept a new understanding of the way we do church.
An additional critique that I hope resonates with readers as it has with me is the lack of discipleship in the church. Hirsch discovered this neglect of disciple-making in his own ministry and realized that the church in general is entertaining and feeding the people without engaging them and forming them into disciples who can and will carry out the mission of the church. He also notes that the culture fills this void left by the church.
Hirsch calls churches to transform themselves from being "attractional" to being "sending" churches. Similarly, he calls for the end to the partitioning of what the church treats as "sacred" space versus "secular" space. This differentiation only serves to alienate the world from the church and prevents evangelism and mission. As churches become sending and missional, they also become incarnational, Hirsch calls attention to the four aspects of the incarnation that is a model for the missional-incarnational church:Presence, Proximity, Powerlessness and Proclamation.
When it comes to ecclesiology, Hirsch looks very Puritan in his ways. He emphasizes the irreducible structure and nature of the church and is critical of anything beyond it. Further structure is sketched as stodgy institutionalism. He defends this approach by appealing to the early church and underground church in China. Although these appeals provide insights about those churches, they are also narrow and neglectful though not entirely off the mark. But the early church also found the need to develop liturgies, leadership, structure, discipline and theologians. Hirsch's idyllic picture of the early church is too limited in scope. It ignores the dangers in a structureless spirituality such as false prophets, poor teaching, cultism, unaccountability, etc. Instead, Hirsch associates the shortfallings of the Western church with post-Constantinian Christendom&institutionalism instead of with sin, Satan and human nature--all of which are also present in the organic, grassroots, missional churches advocated by Hirsch. He ignores the positive benefits that the early church and the contemporary church gain from structure and a sacramental liturgy with ordained clergy.
I think Hirsch also treads into ambiguous and tenuous territory when he defines what is and is not an "authentic Jesus movement" or a "more authentic church." These types of claims are indicative of Hirsch's attempts to define the best way to do church. His way of describing the ideal church is somewhat like identifying the best year of a person's life and then admonishing others to live that way in that state all of the time without maturing. He prescribes living on the edge of chaos, but ignores the dangers; whereas, some readers will recognize that living on the edge of chaos will lead to many falling over the edge into the chaos. Taking adequate precautions to avoid this danger should not be neglected.
For Hirsch, mission is the starting and ending point for the church. He asserts that mission is the mother of all good theology. This is a somewhat naïve view of mission and theology. The early church that Hirsch highlights had to deal with the bad theology of Marcion, Arian, the Gnostics, the Judaizers, etc. during its times of great expansion. I think Hirsch would have a difficult time arguing that study of Scripture and true worship are somehow subject to missional enterprises. These are not opposed to each other, but I think they need to go hand-in-hand with each other. The Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are not lacking in mission zeal and endeavors, but their theology is awful. This point is just indicative of Hirsch's general failure to take into account the larger scope of what he writes.
The concept and picture of transforming the church from attractional to sending-missional-incarnational is surely the key factor of Hirsh's book and the one that can be implemented in the institutional church without the church ceasing to be a member of the institution. I believe that the sending-missional-incarnational church can be church with a priest, liturgy, orthodox theology, sacred space and discipline, just as it can be home churches, underground churches and grassroots movements.

(Apostolic Genius) 『I originally picked up The Forgotten Ways the same year it was published, immediately read a few chapters and moved on. Nothing to do with the book, rather the times were-a-changin' and it appeared that everybody was thinking "missionally." However, now after 3-4 years of thinking missionally, it may be time to revisit Alan's Hirsch's The Forgotten Ways, for it appears that being missional may no longer be on the radar.
What does thinking missional have to do with living into a multiracial future? Alan speaks of his personal founding event which cemented his interest in thinking missionally. Alan encountered this crazy community that rocked Melbourne, Australia - South Melbourne Church of Christ (SMCC). SMCC works, Alan says, because it had "irreducible elements that constitute Apostolic Genius." His book in essence is a prescriptive look or test of this observation that goes beyond SMCC and is seen in thriving missional churches on every continent. What makes a church missional is being Christ, and not just as a "mission" or "outreach" program but because the church has authentic missional-incarnational DNA, or mDNA.
Alan outlines six elements that compose the structure of what he calls "mDNA," and subsequently the structure of Apostolic Genius. Central to the structure is the simple confession that Jesus is Lord, then like spokes on a wheel five components flesh out mDNA: disciple making, communitas, organic systems, apostolic environment, and missional-incarnational impulse.
What makes this structure of a missional church symbiotic with living into a multiracial future is that the missional church exhibiting Apostolic Genius through mDNA is most primed to reach the general population. But what is the general population? Yes, the bulk or general population is that complex, multicultural, and not on the radar of the traditional evangelical church populace that is mostly urban. You know the traditional target of the evangelical church by another name: middle-class, family valued, and having "decent-living" lifestyles. Of course that also describes most traditional evangelical pastors too - go figure!
Alan makes a wonderful case for what one would think of as obvious, that being the missional church is not to create a Christian culture and program to draw people groups into it; rather, the missional church is incarnated and implanted into the cultural people group by intention and design. Churches with mDNA go to the culture as opposed to create a community apart from the culture. By the way, this is the original conception of evangelical as opposed to fundamental. This mDNA is indicative of Apostolic Genius. The influence towards being like Christ is from within as Jesus is "introduced into their imaginations and conversations in a really evocative way."
The most compelling content of The Forgotten Ways is a missional church "apostolic environment" that permits the church to operate in such a way to realize her fullest missional potential. Alan calls this leadership environment APEPT, which is simply an acronym for the five-fold equipping gifts of Ephesians 4: apostles, prophets, evangelist, pastors, and teachers. Each gift in Alan's apostolic environment has a constellation of leaders to organize the mission around that gift which Christ gave to the church.
I concur with Alan, about the preeminence of APEPT for the equipping church. Also, that the primary task of missional leader(ship) is to acknowledge that one does not creep up on a big future, one boldly proclaims it.
