customer 's review (Great Easel) I bought this for my 7-year-old daughter and she loves it! It provides a chalk board on one side and a wipe-off board on the other. It is fairly easy to put together and can be unassembled and folded flat when you are finished with it. So far ours seems to have a permanent spot on our table - and it doesn't take up too much room. Seems to be durable. Good buy for your money. Melissa and Doug Tabletop Art Easel with chalkboard and dry erase board. Rerations < Melissa and Doug Double Sided Tabletop Art Easel >

Origin: Central America&Mexico. A living tribute to ancient peoples, corn provides nourishment for body and soul. One of the three most important food crops of humankind, corn has evolved into many modern varieties: sweet, starch, parch, flint, dent, popcorn and ornamental.
Soil&Amendments: Corn needs rich soil to thrive. It produces best in soils amended generously with compost.
Culture: Corn needs warmth to germinate, but once germinated the plants will grow quite well in cool soils under wet conditions. Soak seeds overnight to aid germination. When danger of frost has passed, sow sweet corn 1-2" deep in rows that are 3' apart. Plant 2-3 seeds every 12". After seedlings reach 4-6" in height, thin to 1 plant per foot. Plant in blocks, clusters, or spirals, of at least four rows to insure the best wind pollination. Side dress with compost and aged manure if yellowing, or if growth seems stunted. (Realities of the Human Condition)
(Follow that Bird)
(My 3 year old was crying)
(Perfect for Toddlers) I remember watching this when I was a kid, I loved it then and I love it now. Big Bird was sent to go live with another bird family by a Bird Adoption Agency and he did not like it there. So he decided to walk home, which the bird family thought he ran away. The people from Sesame Street went to look for him, before the Bird Adoption Agency that made him go live with the other family could find him. There was a lot of funny things that happened and fun songs that kids and grown up would like.
I recommend this movie to kids and grown ups. This is an interesting movie in that it really shows some realities of the human condition. The movie starts with a Bird Agency deciding that Big Bird can not be happy because he is not living with other birds. So, they decide he needs to leave his Sesame Street family to live with a bird family. (The Dodos) I don't know if they were aware of the harsh reality they exposed. More often than not, it seems these agencies make decisions and pass judgment WITHOUT knowing what they are talking about or really establishing the facts. (Without going into too many details, I do have experience with these places, and they often make poor decisions without understanding the situations they are dealing with.) If we want to expand a bit further, the great Shakespeare put it well when he said in his "King Lear:" 'striving to better, oft we mar what's well.' Moving on, Miss Finch (of the agency) goes to Sesame Street and convinces Big Bird that he will be happier with the Dodo family. (In Illinois) Back in New York, Big Bird's friends at Sesame Street are of course upset, but they agree that Big Bird has the right to try it if he wants to. Big Bird's friend Mr. Snuffalupugus is especially sad, but Big Bird promises that he will send him a letter when he can visit. Without going on too long about them, the Dodos actually make the naive Big Bird look really smart, and while he can tolerate their lack of intelligence, he can not tolerate their refusal to let Mr. Snuffalupugus visit. (The Dodo's don't like Mr. Snuffalupugus because he is not a bird.) So, Big Bird decides that he has to walk back to Sesame Street. Waylon Jennings gives Big Bird a ride part of the way and encourages him. Back on Sesame Street, Big Birds friends decide they have to look for him. One thing that makes this movie so great, is that despite their faults and flaws, they all go off to look for Big Bird. (Even Oscar the Grouch) Undoubtedly, the most zany group is Oscar the Grouch, the argumentative, but lovable Maria, and Mr. doom and gloom Telly. But things are not going to be simple. Miss Finch is still looking for Big Bird to bring him back to the Dodos, and a corrupt entertainment duet is after Big Bird to capitolize off of him. While this movie may APPEAR to be for children, it really raises true aspects of the human condition. (Agencies thinking they know what should be, flawed friends trying their best, and corruption) Between the suspense, the comedy, and some good songs, this movie is seldom boring. In some ironic moments, Big Bird's friends get VERY close to him, but lose sight of him quickly. (In a typical Ernie and Bert moment, they find him, but lose him quickly, and we're not sure whether we are suppose to laugh or cry.) This movie may technically be for children, but I also feel that it has lasting value for older people as well. I also feel that if parents watch this with their children, they will be surprised as to how good it is. I remembered this movie from when I was a kid, I use to love it. I took a chance and got it for my 2 year old and was I glad I did. It is now one of her favorite movies. She asks to watch it all the time, Her favorite use to be elmo now she really loves big bird. I give this movie a great review. I think this was a good story, typical Sesame Street, but my 3 year old was crying through most of it because Big Bird was lost, and then he was blue, and oh no! That made her cry more. Anyway, you know your child; mine is still a little sensitive, obviously, so we've shelved this one for now. My little one loves this movie. It was one of my favorites growing up so why not stick with what you know best. Even better in DVD- then the old VHS! Follow That Birdis as much a journey through time as it is a romp past the Sesame Street stop sign. Curiously, the cast members--live ones like Gordon and Maria, not just the Muppets--have the timeless look to them. Only the cameos (by Sandra Bernhard, John Candy, and others) plus a few ill-conceived hairdos clue us in that this feature film was made in 1985. Otherwise, it's all sophisticated Sesame humor and bighearted fun here as Oscar, the Count, and crew set off to rescue Big Bird, who's on the lam from a family of adoptive dodos. Only one conceivable complaint: The latter crop ofStreetviewers may miss Elmo, who hadn't been created whenBirdfirst flew into theaters.--Tammy La Gorce Big Bird decides to go home to Sesame Street when he finds out that his foster home with the Dodo's is no fun. All his friends set out to find him when they think he is lost. Genre:Children's Video Rating:G Release Date:8-FEB-2005 Media Type:DVD Rerations < Sesame Street Presents - Follow that Bird >

(Better sleeping)
(Seemed to make things worse)
(Delta Sleep System)
(My dog and I both sleep better) I ususally dont believe what I read and have to find out for myself but this CD really helped me. I was having nightime anxiety attacks and was unable to go to sleep. I found instant relief from the CD's mellow music. I didnt find any disturbing or loud parts like some of the people claim as disruptive. I used my earphones and had a nice low volume. I would reccommend this CD :) If you're the type of person, who will dwell on something to the point of sleeplessness, Delta Sleep may help you by distracting your brain. I find it helpful when played at a very low level. I put it on last night. I was already feeling very tired but thought I may as well use it anyway. The droning music was quite soothing and after 10 minutes I was in a semi-sleep state, which is very quick for me... then POW, the musician stabs at his keyboard with some synth cords and the droning background volume increases suddenly which actually STARTLES me back to full consciousness.
I thought "that was strange" but I commit to using it all night. I turn it down a little and try again. The same thing keeps happening. I try the other track but it does the same thing. The droning is good but every 10 minutes or so there is a sudden change or sudden introduction of a new sound.
I didn't sleep at all last night, now I'm sitting at work wondering how I'm going to stay awake. I'm thinking I should have brought this damn CD with me to work to keep me awake.
I'm starting to think this company has used the age old marketing technique of creating a bad product on purpose so that you will have to buy their other products. Advertisements for their other sleep CDs are all over the inside cover. I have purchased two CDs from the Dr Jeffrey Thompson series and both have been successful in lulling me into a late afternoon nap for almost the duration of their 30 minute tracks. There are two 30 minute tracks on most of his CDs.
It is difficult to know what real effect these recordings have on our brain waves but if nothing else they provide some non-distracting white noise. For some of us that is all we need to steer us away from our relentless thinking and send us into a needed state of slumber. On the other hand the Delta Sleep System has never put me to sleep for more than a 25 minute nap. But it is better than nothing. I purchased this cd along with another cd featuring guided meditaion for sleep. I like this cd a lot because the sounds are not flat and even. They move in a pattern similar to an ocean but slower and more soothing. I was deeply intrigued by the title of the book and the concept. I am glad I took the chance. I transferred it to my ipod so I can listen to it for an hour or have it repeat until I wake up. Not only did I sleep soundly, but my dog slept soundly without bad dreams. There are several stages of sleep which people pass through in the course of a good restful night. In each stage our sleep gets deeper, our bodies gets more relaxed and our brainwave patterns slow down. The deepest and most rejuvenating levels of sleep are associated with Delta brainwave patterns.Delta sleep is the most physically relaxed stage of sleep and is the time when the body recuperates and rebalances itself for the new day. Getting enough sleep, but more specifically enough Delta Sleep, is essential for healthy, productive living. Dr. Jeffrey Thompson's breakthrough audio techniques, developed over 20 years of clinical research, are proven to increase levels of Delta brainwave activity. He has helped thousands of people to achieve regular, restful, revitalizing sleep. How This Program Can Work For You Play Delta Sleep System on any ordinary stereo or through headphones. Pulses of sound embedded into an ambient musical soundtrack, combining rich orchestration and "3-dimensional" sounds of nature will coax your own brainwaves toward their natural pattern of deep Delta Sleep. (One episode only, but great)
(THE DEFINATIVE DOCUMENTARY ON THE HISTORY OF SILENT FILMS.)
(Heartbreaking documentary/ Brilliant and British)
(A Fitting Testament To The Unsung Heroes Of Hollywood) I am very glad I got this collection, new, when I did!
This set of mini-documentaries and interviews are a treasure that is woefully overlooked in the growing interest in silent film groups.
Oh - to have it in DVD!
The silent star recounting their excitement and memories are infectious. This is a classic work - very well done - and but for the intro music and some graphics, holds it's age .
As many silent film collections that have come forward in the last few years - some very obscure - this set would have more mass-appeal - and including the later classic actors' views on the silents would be interesting to Classic Movie Fans as well.
That it includes very major silent film stars interviewed in-depth is remarkable and one can see and feel time roll back - and the actor/actress reborn. Some of my favorites are Viola Dana recollecting the death of her fiance in an aerial stunt for the movies. The other is (I believe - I'm writing this from memory) Hal Roach's ribauld memories and also King Vidor's observations.
It's like sitting on the backlot of an old movie studio - and hearing the gossip retold of the teens and twenties!
This set caught my interest in silent film when I was in my teens viewing it in the early 1980's. It never let-go.
Does anyone know who can be written to request the DVD version be produced?
Thank you.
I wish they would bring the whole series by Kevin Brownlow out on DVD, but since they haven't, I settled for getting the one episode(there are many) I wanted the most. This DVD includes two parts, one on Clara Bow and one on John Gilbert. Both of these great silent stars didn't make it into the sound era. I am fascinated with John Gilbert's story, so I wanted to see this. I've actually seen the entire Hollywood story I fell in love with this series when it first appeared on PBS. Not only was it an excellent documentary, it gave many viewers their first and, probably, last look at stars from the silent era; most of whom would be dead within the next 5 years. Also since saving film wasn't much a concern back then, many of the clips used have probably deteriorated to dust. My only complaint is that this excellent 11+ hours series isn't released on DVD in America, as yet, and I still have to lug out 13 individual VHS tapes to watch it instead of 2 or 3 DVDs in a compact case. Before there was Ken Burns to do it, there was an extraordinary documentary about silent film. Absolutely riveting in its wonderful arcana, in-person interviews, stock photos and footage, narration by James Mason, and the terrific music by the brilliant Carl Davis, this series is a must-see for anyone who loves film and wants to know where it all started!! There are facts and anecdotes here to amaze, and break the heart as well. Mason's voice-overs are perfect....one minute he's the objective narrator, and the next moment, his inflection can have you chuckling, or tearing up at the stories of all the various players in the early days of Hollywood. And has there ever been a more beautiful score for television, or film for that matter, than the work of Carl Davis?? His opening title alone for the credits is gorgeous, and the producers then use different pieces that Davis has composed for these silent films. If only his music had been available to the original producers and directors for them to hear. Obviously, Davis must be one of the biggest fans of silent film of all time. If you can get a copy of this series, do so. It is never shown on television anymore, and it's a terrible thought that this series could be lost through neglect the way so much of the film from the 20's and 30's has been lost. It has been estimated that more than half of all silent film has disintegrated or been disposed of. Let's hope that the producers of this major documentary series re-release it on DVD as soon as possible for the many fans who remember it, and for the many more fans who will, I'm sure, be thrilled to discover it. Having written a school drama project on stuntmen this episode, from what I would call the definitive series on Hollywood and the names that made it famous, is a gold mine of information for the researcher. This episode in particular is filled with sheer pathos and moving accounts from the memories of the great unsung heroes of the silver screen. A crying shame then that there is no dvd release of this valuable series. Many of them involved in the interviews (even the narrator) are now dead. How important then that this documentary needs re-releasing? Rerations < Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film - Comedy a Serious Business >

customer 's review (Everything's Coming Up Crabgrass)
(Campy, artificial, no improvement on the 1962 film, but still GYPSY)
(FAITHFUL TO ORIGINAL, BUT MIDLER MISSES THE MARK)
(Great rendition)
(Ethel Merman, move over!) It looked good on paper: Powerhouse performer Bette Midler playing the most famous role in musical theater, directed by Emile Ardolino, the guy who turned "Dirty Dancing" into a national phenomenon. So what went wrong? The truth is, Midler simply isn't a good enough actress to capture the subtleties of as complex a character as Momma Rose. She's all big eyes and broad gestures, waving arms and manic mood swings; it's a community theater performance, going for the obvious at every turn. Is Rose manic and driven at times? Yes, of course; her father calls her a "crazy woman" in an early scene. But from her first entrance, Midler seems to have confused "powerhouse" with "bulldozer." She spits her lines out in rapid succession, with all the bawdiness with which she tells her famous Sophie Tucker jokes in concert. But where's charm, humor, sexiness; all the manipulatively feminine characteristics that make Rose such a seductive, seditious presence in everyone's lives? Rose gets her way not because she beats Herbie, June and Louise into submission, but because her dreams and desires are so strong they have no choice but to believe in them themselves. Auntie Mame is described as The Pied Piper, but it's an apt description of Rose as well. Midler's characterization is so grating, I can't imagine anyone doing much more than running in the opposite direction.
Unfortunately, with the exception of Jennifer Rae Beck's Dainty June and Linda Hart's Mazeppa, the supporting cast is average at best. And however skilled Ardolino is at directing the musical sequences, he completely fails to mine the humor and tension of Arthur Laurents's brilliant dialogue. The production values are first rate across the boards. Personally, I think June's acts are a little over produced; a certain vaudeville seediness would have made more sense. But the producers and Ardolino obviously adore the material -- who doesn't? -- and they've approached it with tremendous love and attention, so it's hard to fault their decisions.
Is this a better version than the 1962 film? Yes and no. It's a far more faithful adaptation, with Laurents and Sondheim's bawdier material intact, but I think the earlier cast is far superior. I know I'm not supposed to like Rosiland Russell because she wasn't Ethel Merman, but I love the performance; for me, Russell finds the perfect balance between Rose's fierce passion and her crushing vulnerability. And Karl Malden and Natalie Wood are superb, the latter fragile and extremely touching. So as a record of the show as originally written, this version is a must for all musical theatre fans. But if you're looking for the definitive "Gypsy" on film -- it ain't been made yet. About the best you can say for Bette Midler's performance is that she does her own singing. And even some of that is sloppy and careless. Her acting is one-note, and she kills her best comedy lines by alternately gasping or screeching them. (Say what you will about Roz Russell, she at least knew how to deliver lines.) We know that Madame Rose's kiddie troupe is getting a bit long in the tooth, but Jennifer Beck as "Dainty" June looks fully thirty years old. Cynthia Gibb is a lovely Louise/Gypsy, but Natalie Wood "aged" more credibly in the admittedly flawed by classier 1962 theatrical film adaptation. Peter Riegert is too mousy as Herbie, so much of the point of a strong man continually knuckling under to Rose's steamroller whim is lost. (When he does stand up to Rose, he seems more petulant than assertive.) Stars are wasted in bit parts, and Andrea Martin unwisely and unsuccessfully tries to be funny as Mrs. Cratchitt (who was played hilariously "straight" in the 1962 film by Jean Willes.)
The production itself looks cheesy and low budget, and the bright crayon colors don't help. Even the lamb was cuter in the earlier movie!
Still, it's an earnest attempt. And with great material like that, it's hard to go far wrong. As many others have pointed out, the adaptation is faithful to the original. But oh, why didn't somebody think to do a second film of GYPSY in the 70s while Merman was still around to do it? I LOVE the musical GYPSY. I knew that the creators of the original Broadway musical, Jule Styne, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents were extremely disappointed with the earlier 1962 film version with Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood. Fair enough. So this TV adaptation is scene for scene, word for word exactly like the stage play script. That is excellent. The score is also one of the most outstanding in all of Broadway history. So, we get the original script and score; but unfortunately, that's all we get. I watched this TV movie with great anticipation. My enthusiam deflated as soon as the less than divine Miss M started singing "Some People." I realized, with horror, that she was not portraying Mama Rose. Instead, she was portraying her idea of Ethel Merman portraying Mama Rose!! To make matters worse, her voice sounds extremely hoarse and coarse. Midler never makes the role her own. Surely, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and even Rosalind Russell did their own individual interpretations of Mama Rose. If Midler had only thought for a moment about Mama Rose, as the other actresses did, instead of Ethel Merman, she might have had a major triumph. I give Midler credit for giving her all to "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and "Rose's Turn", but the overalll production goes straight downhill because Midler simply doesn't "got the stuff." Curiously, Midler did this TV version just after Tyne Daly won a Tony Award for her performance in a Broadway revival. So, any TV version around that time period should have gone by rights to Daly. I wonder if somebody in Midler's camp pulled strings to make this a Midler Vanity production? I know Russell stole the original film from Merman because her husband was a powerful agent. Even I did not mind Russell over Merman. But Midler seriously misses the mark! I know a thing or two about Mama Rose. I saw Judy Kaye play the role in a brief run in Seattle in 2001. Kaye just blew the roof off the theatre. Patti Lupone is doing a limited three week run in NYC as I write this. Now, that's a Mama I'd love to see. If you want a real powerhouse Mama Rose, skip Midler and go with the CD recordings made by Angela Lansbury (1973 London Cast) or Tyne Daly (1989 Broadway revival) instead. I was recently in a production of "Gypsy" and have grown pretty attached to it. I thought this rendition was done quite well, but I prefer the Baby June from the original film and I prefer the strippers from the original film as well. I like Bette's performance the best out of the other Mama Rose actresses from film and/or Broadway.
My only complaint was a small glitch in the DVD that causes it to skip. Maybe a spin on the Disc Doctor will cure it. What can I say? Bette Midler is totally superb in the role of Mama Rose! She is fantastic! Even though this was a television special, Ms Midler out performed, and out sang Tyne Daly, had more passion that Ethel Merman, and came neck to neck with Angela Lansbury in acting and singing departments. Great DVD! This faithful broadcast TV remake of the classic Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim musical looms as a career triumph for top-lined Bette Midler--and a bittersweet measurement of how far mainstream film and TV have retreated from the glories of musical theater. By the time Midler, as the mother of all stage mothers, observes, "I was born too early and started too late," it's only too obvious that the star's words are an ironic inversion. Had Midler been born earlier, she certainly would have reigned as a major musical comedy star. In a role form-fitted to Ethel Merman's brassy persona and brassier voice, Midler more than holds her ground musically and, especially, dramatically.Titled partly for its source, the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee,Gypsyalludes as well to the itinerant life of her family. The show's focal point isn't the titular character, but rather her manipulative mother, Mama Rose (Midler), who channels her own frustrated dreams of stardom into Baby June, the curly blonde daughter who always eclipses sister Louise. The story follows Rose's machinations as she tirelessly reinvents June to defy the passage of time and even puberty itself. By the time Louise herself conquers the marquee as Gypsy Rose Lee, Rose's single-minded focus has alienated her long-suffering lover and agent, Herbie (a well-cast Peter Riegert), and surrendered to the inherent compromise of burlesque. Midler's Rose reveals glimpses of vulnerability and a delusional monstrousness that provide a dark, gritty subtext. Studded with wonderful songs, the Styne/Sondheim score underlines those themes deftly, especially in Sondheim's multileveled lyrics. ThisGypsyalso benefits from uniformly nifty casting: in addition to Reigert (Crossing Delancey, Local Hero), Cynthia Gibb slowly blooms as Louise, and Jennifer Rae Beck, Andrea Martin, Christine Ebersole, and erstwhile new-wave singer Rachel Sweet are delights.--Sam Sutherland Rerations < Gypsy (1993) >

customer 's review (Gilligan"Two on a Raft very funny and enjoyable to watch.)
(COLORIZED)
(This is a tape of two episodes of Gilligan's island) I bought this video because I remembered how much I enjoyed watching Gilligan as a kid and wanted my kids to see it too. My five year old thinks Gilligan is just hilarious! We laughed and laughed. I don't mind that it is colorized. The part where Gilligan and Skipper are out on the raft and the sharks eat the raft was great. Excellent episodes, but they've been colorized. I was so surprised to see these episodes in color (I didn't even have a color TV when I saw these the first time). It was quite disconcerting to see these episodes in color. Also, they seem to have been edited: the skipper doesn't ever hit Gilligan with his hat (or maybe he started doing that in later episodes?)....I would have given it 5 stars if it had been in B&W (original format). This two episode set contains the first episode of Gilligan's Island the first episode is titled Two on a Raft and involves the castaways trying to get of the island. The Professor tells the Skipper and Gilligan to watch out for headhunters on nearby islands. The bumbling crew set out, but a shark attack and a sudden storm cause them to land on an island(the same one they left)! remembering what the Professor told them, the Skipper and Gilligan think the other castaways are headhunters, and vice versa.
