Have not used this one yet, but I can tell you what I did with the train one. I decorated each part for the likes of a specific person at a birthday party. They had a great time looking at each person's train car. Plan to do the same with the cars.

(cake) 『These cakes are great for a themed party or just for fun. You can make cute muffins as well. You do have to ensure the cake is VERY cool before trying to remove from the pan if you want them to come out. I have not made the recipe on the package, but I have used the pan a couple times with other recipes I have. I do know that most boxed cake mixes are too fragile and "wet." You need to modify the mix. If you are not into decorating, you can make a sugar glaze to go over top. Downside: requires storage space unless you do a lot of creative baking. Note: The cake details are not as clear with chocolate cake. I made an old fashioned chocolate cake in them, and found I needed to do more decorating with icing to really bring out the fun details. Recipe note: I have used the recipe for both the train cake pan NordicWare Platinum Collection Train Pan and the snowman cake pan Nordicware 55448 Snowman Pan and both are very good (especially the snowman, if not labor intensive).』

They were right. The ribbon adds at least an extra 1/2". I think I will either sew it or tape it so it is right. If you butt the panels right up next to eachother the measurement is exactly right. Otherwise this is a wonderful growth chart. I think it is very well made and beautiful. It is NOT a toy, so it is not made for your child to play with - definitely not sturdy enough for that. I am disappointed about the measurement problem, but not enough to send it back. It is too pretty and too easy to fix. I hope they are still around for my next child!』

Therefore, I had to measure my daughter and then manually enter it on the chart. Not much of a growing chart to me. The stickers included to record Birthdays and Special Occasions are small and melt together with the background color/design, therefore are really hard to spot. When artists have big, beautiful voices, I love it when they actually USE them, and in this album, Linda does. She hits some of those extraordinarily high notes in songs like "Unusual Way" and "Man of la Mancha". She uses her big Broadway-style voice for most of the songs. I listened to this album with headphones, and boy oh boy, did it get loud at points. This artist can BELT IT OUT. Some of the songs (especially the better-known) are changed around a bit to fit Linda's style. "On the Street Where You Live" is slower with a jazzy/blues sort of feel. "Edelweiss" has a slow tempo, and Linda uses her breathy voice for part of it (but also hits some of those high notes). I didn't recognize a lot of these songs, and I listen to a lot of Broadway. "On the Street Where You Live", "Some People", "Don't Rain on My Parade", "The Impossible Dream", and "Edelweiss" are some of the more well known songs. But even though I had never heard a lot of the songs, I enjoyed them immensely. Linda's absolutely beautiful, perfect, clear voice makes all of them worthwhile listening. Overall, if you like Broadway, you will probably enjoy this album, which takes some well known Broadway songs and "re-does" them a bit, but still creates an enjoyable listen.』

(The powerful and beautiful voice of Linda Elder) 『A great selection of songs. Tremendous amount of energy in Linda's voice. I just love it.』 『The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002'sGoldwill be relieved that her follow-up,Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or ratheroverthe top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. (A rather awful recording) 『I've had the misfortune to hear this CD and all the perversions of Johann Andreas Pachelbel's chamber piece on this CD once too often.
The work was written for three solo violins and basso continuo [violoncello or viola da gamba + organ or harpsichord] and it is a rather virtuoso work, typical of works written for a small group of violins [or cornetti] over an ostinato bass line in the 17th century.
All but one "interpretation" on this CD bares little or no similarity to the written score at all and almost all of the arrangements of the piece are complete kitsch, trash, even. Cleo Laine's "song" is probably the worst example.
So what do we learn about the composer from this CD? Virtually nothing. However, it is instructive to learn how tastelessly a piece of music can be pushed, strained, pummelled, shredded, extracted, decimated, pumped up, deflated, force-fed, mutated and generally exploited by musicians, singers and arrangers who clearly have no knowledge of 17th century music and couldn't care less about acquiring any knowledge of that music.
I work in a music shop and it always amuses me when people who've bought CDs like this one decide to explore Pachelbel's music a little further and discover that they've been completely hoodwinked and that the composer's actual music sounds nothing like any interpretation of the Canon [&Gigue] they've ever heard - except, of course, if they've been fortunate enough to hear Musica Antiqua Köln's or London Baroque's recordings. They walk away bewildered by the organ music, chamber music and cantatas of J. A. Pachelbel.
Two stars for the one rather pleasant H.I.P. recording on this CD.』

This was a terrific musical, true to the book, covers all of it well, the music is lovely and doesn't slow the plot down, but enhances it. The performances are magnificent, particularly Barbour and Schaffel as Rochester and Jane, respectively, and the show was dazzling visually. The critics gave it favorable reviews, it was nominated for several Tony awards. The only thing it lacked was an audience. It simply never took off at the box office. I guess it didn't have enough Disney effects or pop music to draw the crowds. A real shame when a wonderful adaptation of one of the greatest works of literature in the English language is not successful.
The CD is a must have for theater buffs, it really is a marvelous score, highly enjoyable.』

James Barbour is a to-die-for Rochester and Marla Schaffel portrays a believable version of Jane (in my opinion she does a very good job and her rather deep voice suits the character, since I think Jane eyre does not need to sound like a little girl). (A Broadway Romance That Truly Soars) 『Charolotte Bronte would be proud, I have no doubt. I will undoubtedly be contradicted by other musical fanatics, but this truly enchanting musical version of the classic Gothic romance is the best page-to-stage musical to ever be brought to the stage for one simple reason: it has a beating heart and isn't afraid to be faithful to its source material. "Les Miz" may be touching, but I find the score in this gem of a shore to be truly more heart-wrenching as composer Paul Gordon doesn't write ballads for the sake of having a ballad. There are actually no "big" songs in this show to speak of in terms of structure - there "bigness" comes from the power of the story, and by the universally outstanding performances of the entire cast, especially the luminous Marla Schaffel as Jane Eyre, a role that should have won her more than a Tony nomination. As Jane, Marla positively shines. With a big belt and a lilting head voice, Marla has a big Broadway voice, but she is such a strong actress that you never feel as if you are listening to a performance: you are listening to THE Jane Eyre. Her voice soars in her numbers "Sweet Liberty," the heart-breaking "Painting Her Portrait," and blends perfectly with the overwhelmingly robust voice of James Barbour as Rochester. As the master of Thornfield Hall, Barbour is in excellent voice, but he doesn't truly become the character. Don't get me wrong, he does extremely well as Rochester, and no other baritone available at the time of this show's production could have played this role, but James performs his character, he doesn't become him, as Marla absolutely inhabits the role of Jane Eyre. However, James does bring a delightful sarcasm to his Rochester, not to mention a truly power-house voice. Compared to Anthony Crivello of the original Toronto production, however, James falls a little short, especially in his chemistry with Marla, which is barely apparent. For a full performance of Rochester, track down the out-of-print Toronto Cast Recording (sold used on this site by private sellers). As Mrs. Fairfax, Mary Stout is given two quick, bouncy numbers that show off her terrific comedic timing and bubbly, infectious presence. As Blanche Ingram, Elizabeth Degrazzia is a knockout, especially in the delightfully snobby tribute to material wealth, "The Finer Things." Paul Gordon's music is the biggest star next to Ms. Schaffel, writing many songs that will stand on their own two feet outside of the show, especially the exuisite "Brave Enough For Love," the honest and glimmering "Secret Soul," and the aching Act One closer "Sirens." Full of counter-melodies and lyrics lifted from or inspired by Bronte's original masterful prose, the score perfectly fits the story. If Jane and Rochester sang, this is what and how they would sing. Hopefully the show, overshadowed by THE PRODUCERS and robbed of the Tonys for Best Score and Best Actress, the show will never-the-less remain in the hearts of those who value it as one of the best musicals created so far this century.』

This ambitious adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's haunting classicJane Eyrefor the musical theater seems to be part of a trend represented most famously byLes Misérables. It also reflects the increasing pressure to schedule an original cast recording release as close as possible to a new show's Broadway opening: in this case, in fact, the CD was both recorded and releasedpriorto the show's opening in December 2000 at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. But what's most significant for the artistic character ofJane Eyre: The Musicalis found in yet another pattern: like a number of his colleagues, composer-lyricist Paul Gordon comes to the project from a pop music industry background (best known for his hit "Friends and Lovers"). And quite a few of the show's numbers benefit from Gordon's catchy craftwork, weaving melodies that are clearly destined to be whistled long past curtain. Yet the effect is sometimes too facile, not diving as deep as we would like into the emotional predicaments of Brontë's characters. You begin to crave a more deftly defined and imagined variety of sound worlds (especially for the darker aspects of Thornfield Hall) than what is hinted at. Gordon doesn't forge any new paths, but his melodic fluency does have its moments of payoff--especially in the moving final duet "Brave Enough for Love," which is also strong enough to stand on its own.
Gordon's predilections as a would-be son of Sondheim are nevertheless clear, and he's telescoped the story into mostly effective lyrics, with some thoughtful juxtapositions of material. Most importantly, he understands that this is more than a Gothic romance, foregrounding the central message of forgiveness that Jane learns as a girl. He attempts to explore the injured sense of self shared by both Jane and Rochester and sets them on a painful, mutual voyage of discovery.
The creative team also includes the veteran duo John Caird (book and direction) and John Napier (scenic design), who have collaborated on such epics asLes MisandNicholas Nickleby(not to mention the Las Vegas Siegfried and Roy extravaganza). And the show's creators seem to share a vision geared toward the more operatic end of the spectrum (it was opera composers, after all, who early on claimed 19th-century Gothic fiction for the stage, as in Donizetti'sLucia di Lammermoor), with an actual parody of coloratura in one showstopper ("The Finer Things") given to Blanche Ingram. Fortunately, the two principals have large, richly expressive voices to encompass the large, complicated emotions of these characters. Marla Schaffel singswith unusual beauty and brings dimension to her Jane, while James Barbour (whose resumé includesBeauty and the Beast) is never really threatening as Rochester, but rather a tortured soul who is sweet-voiced even at his most cynical. Mary Stout is a stitch as the blustery Mrs. Fairfax. While the show has already undergone a lengthy evolution from its very first workshops, the viability of its final, fully staged realization has yet to be determined. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Mike Leigh Embraces the Roller Coaster of Life...) 『The story focuses on a family that lives in the outskirts of London where they try to make the most of the life. Andy, the father, works as a supervisor for a large kitchen and he hates his job. Andy is a dreamer that often does not get things done, but always starts countless new tasks as he has aspirations to start something new. The mother, Wendy, works as a clerk in a small boutique that sells children's clothing and she teaches physical education in an elementary school. Through a friend of the family she gets a night job as a waitress in a French gourmet restaurant in order to help the friend to get back on his feet.
Wendy and Andy do what they can to make life tolerable and enjoyable. They make the most of the ups and laugh at the downs. Together Andy and Wendy have raised a pair of twins that are now twenty-something, Natalie and Nicola. The positive Natalie is a hard working plumber who has inherited her hard working attitude from her mother, and she acquired her father's visionary skills as she aspires to go to the United States. Nicole is the opposite of Natalie as she is exceedingly pessimistic, introspective, bulimic, nervous, depressed, and unemployed.
Wendy and Andy's daughters, friends, and self-imposed friends brings them joy and misery. Together they display an intriguing resilience to deal with the issues that trouble them through a positive, loving, and sometimes joking attitude. Their knowledge of life is great as they do not worry over things they cannot control, but they are fully aware that they can control their own feelings towards life whether it is good or bad. Natalie and Nicole become an allegorical example for the good and bad times as they are opposites, and the parents embrace both.
Life is Sweet brings "life" to the audience through the family that experiences both ups and downs. Mike Leigh's creative direction brings the cast together to rehearse before establishing the script. These rehearsals often contain improvisation and suggestions from the cast which results in a unique cinematic experience with characters offering great depth. Leigh truly displays skill and ambition to work in a team atmosphere in order to bring out the absolute best from each individual. The outcome from the teamwork is an excellent cinematic experience as it feels both genuine and it offers some valuable lessons to the audience. 』
(Vintage Leigh) 『Although I always enjoyed his films, I never fully appreciated Mike Leigh until I heard his commentary on All or Nothing. Since then, I think I have been able to see Leigh for what he is: An incredibly gifted storyteller. I no longer feel the need to search his movies for some overblown message or statement, but rather just allow myself to enter into the lives of the intriguing characters he presents to us, walk with them on their journey, and learn with them as they learn about themselves.
Life is Sweet is generally lighter fare than, say, his much later Secrets and Lies or All or Nothing, but it is no less compelling. The main characters are well-sketched, their humorous idiosyncracies never quite overstepping the mark into caricature (apart from some of the supporting characters, perhaps), and given enough depth and complexity to avoid the impression that Leigh is patronizing towards them (in a way that a lesser storyteller, such as Willy Russell, often appears).
Life is Sweet is very funny, very warm, but also very human and poignant, with a few moments of grittiness. The ensemble of actors, including Jim Broadbent, Alison Steadman and (a very young) Timothy Spall deliver superb performances. Rachel Portman's score veers between the playful and the melancholy, reflecting (creating?) the tone of the film.』
(A top 10 classic....) 『In the early '90s when LIFE IS SWEET was released, the film made the top 10 lists of film critics everywhere, including Siskel and Ebert, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the San Francisco Chronicle. So why hasn't this film made it to DVD??
LIFE IS SWEET is the story of a set of twin teenage girls played by Claire Skinner and Jane Horrocks. You'll recognize Claire and Jane if you're a BBC/PBS fan. Claire played a chef-in-training on 'Chef' and a lady cop on 'Second Sight'. Jane Horrocks is LITTLE VOICE and I believe she played 'Bubbles' in 'Absolutely Fabulous'. Alison Steadman plays the mother in LIFE IS SWEET and she played Mrs. Bennett in 'Pride and Prejudice' (the most recent version with Colin Firth).
Claire and Jane play their parts so well it is hard to believe they aren't real identical twins--even though they play very different characters. The first time I saw this film I thought the same girl was playing both roles (as did Hayey Mills in the 'Parent Trap'). The supporting cast includes many familiar faces including Jim Broadbent, whom I first noticed in 'Widow's Peake' though he also starred in the Gilbert and Sullivan film Mike Leigh produced a few years ago.
LIFE IS SWEET is a story of teenage angst in an English working class family. One of the twins, Nicola (played by Jane Horrocks), has a problem with food. She starves herself when others are around and then gorges and purges in private (anorexia nervosa?). When Nicola and her boyfriend have sex she insists they do it with chocolate. Nicola dreams of taking her life beyond the narrow working-class world she inhabits. The other twin, played by Claire Skinner works as a plumber. She appears to be a practical and level-headed youngster, the kind most desired in traditional homes.
Mike Leigh's best films, including LIFE IS SWEET, are stories about working-class youngsters coming of age (SECRETS AND LIES, CAREER GIRLS, MEANTIME). These tales involve the arrival of the protagonist at a new level of awareness and personal resolution following a period of less than enthusiastic participation in a"hostile"world. In the end, Nicola finds her place in the world she inhabits and that life is sweet.』
(Recommended) 『Unlike with novelists or musicians, I don't often follow the work of particular directors. But Mike Leigh is an exception. His ability to bring out the best in actors--or his willingness to let them alone to do their best--and then form all the performances into a cohesive movie seems amazing to me. But he not only has confidence in his actors; he has confidence in his audience as well. What results are movies on a human scale, intelligent and revealing. "Life Is Sweet," like "Secrets and Lies," is one of Leigh's more commercial efforts (as opposed to, say, "Naked"). But "Life" is much lighter and funnier. In this story, there are also family secrets, and difficulties and disappointments, but it never strays far from its title argument: that after all, life IS sweet. Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge, Topsy-Turvy) and Alison Steadman (Pride and Prejudice, Abigail's Party, and Leigh's real-life wife) play Andy and Wendy, a middle-class suburban English couple. They're loving and hardworking parents, but still young enough themselves to dissolve into laughing fits on the sofa or tease each other to their horror of their daughters. Andy produces his own minor crisis when his self-employment ambitions take the form of a ratty refreshments van, sold to him by a hilariously untrustworthy Stephen Rea. At the same time, Wendy takes on yet another part-time job when she offers to waitress at a friend's new restaurant--an episode so filled with Timothy Spall's manic efforts that it really defies words. But the real story in "Life Is Sweet" centers around Andy and Wendy's twin daughters, in their early twenties. Natalie, played by Claire Skinner (Almost Strangers, Naked) is the calm, dry center of the family storm. It's a tribute to Skinner that Natalie remains so likeable and watchable throughout the movie, given that she rarely changes expression or inflection. But within the family dynamics, her character is absolutely understandable. Not so much the calm center is Nicola, the other twin. Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous) turns in another astonishing performance as a young woman paralyzed by her own myriad and mostly nameless fears. You desparately want Nicola to reach out for help, even at the same time you find her infuriating or hilarious. Bolstering the leads are David Thewlis, as Nicola's bizarre daytime visitor, and, as mentioned before, Timothy Spall and Stephen Rea. To measure Spall's versatility, compare his performance here with "Secrets and Lies." And Rea is always great; here he manages to be both slightly menacing and completely hapless. With this kind of acting, and Leigh's deft hand with loving slices-of-life, there's very little to dislike about this movie.』

So I decided to "branch out" from the lollipops, and taste their various treats. I got a big box with 12 different sorts of candies in, and most of them are really yummy. However, like in any variety pack, there are some you like and some you don't. That's why it's only 4 stars, and not 5. I have, however, figured out what to do with the candy, I will make nice little boxes and cones in bright colour and make presents of the ones I don't particularly like. I would say only 2-3 of the bags wasn't to my liking, the rest is just as yummy as I had hoped for.
I really like the real taste of the candy. There is no artificial flavour, it's all got clean real taste. I loved the mint ones, and of course the strawberries (I ordered a big bag of those... I will have candy for years!), did not care so much for the spicey ones, nor the root beer one. But that's just me, I think, I don't drink root beer either :)
I am glad I got these, though, it's always nice to have some candy in a bowl for visitors, and the fact that the taste is real, and no artificial anything in them, makes me very happy. Definitely recommend these!』

(Wonderful for simple old fashion delicious cakes) 『This book is one of, if not my favorite cake book. It's excellent. I have not tried every recipe in it (and probably won't since there are just some that do not sound like my thing) but I have tried many recipes and they have all turned out wonderful. There is an oatmeal cake recipe in the book that's one of my favorite cakes and also an old fashion icing recipe that uses a cooked flour/milk mixture. Its an icing recipe that people request that I make, often. It's smooth, not gritty and not too sweet. There is a celestial chocolate cake recipe that is delightful and the photo is absolutely beautiful.
Yes, it would be nice if each recipe was accompanied by a photo but that's kind of rare in a cook book.
I recommend this book for experienced bakers but also for fairly new bakers. It's not a book that contains complicated recipe. Maybe the recipes have alot of steps but they are simple and contain regular grocery store ingredients. It would make a great gift.』

Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey is my absolute favorite though, and I'm giving copies for Christmas this year. I've never had a failure from this book, and every recipe I've tried has been fabulous. I'd especially recommend the coconut milk-cream cheese flan (your guests will nearly weep with happiness) and the sticky toffee pudding, which is swoon-worthy (and stays fresh and fab in the fridge for several days). There are no duds though, and every one you try will be delicious. Further, the author has a nice touch with text, and her hints and explanations are fun to read and very helpful. My one mild complaint is that the baking times seem somewhat off, even though my oven thermometer tests accurate (my flan takes an hour and a half to finish, for example, not the 50 to 60 minutes called for). But that's a small thing that can be corrected, and baked goods should always be watched closely anyway. You'd have to pry this book from my cold, dead hands!』

I fell in love with this cookbook for its whimsical style (title, colors, font, etc), and even bought one as a gift before trying any recipes. But try it I have and having shown its potential, this is a book I will be dipping into whenever my churros sweet tooth hits (which is often).
A little holiday break in my hectic schedule allowed me to try three recipes this week: churros and thick hot chocolate, double crumb apple pie, and sticky pear gingerbread. While the cooking times seemed off on the apple pie (mine was done a bit earlier) and the gingerbread (mine wasn't quite all the way done even past the time listed), all the flavors were dynamite and I am apt to assume the inadequate cooking times had more to do with my inaccurate timing, than the recipes (I'm not known for being overly conscious of timing anyway). I had special fun with the churros and chocolate and we served them up for xmas eve dessert to the family-- a very large platter of them all gone and everyone licking their cinnamon sugar coated lips! There are many more recipes already tagged (grown-up smores anyone?) and I will probably be buying more copies for fellow sweet loving bakers soon.』

It is something that, to my knowledge, has not been attempted before, that is, write a whole book only on breakfast pastries/breads. Usually breakfast is just one section of a book, not the whole.
The binding is not exactly softcover as the book description states but turtleback, which combines the hardback binding with a laminated cover. It includes an informative DVD that describes the basic procedures and methods. I only wish its case was not glued to the back of the first page, as it tore some of the paper. Happily it does not show until you open the cover.
This book could have easily been called "The complete dummy's guide to baking artisan pastries and breads". It is definately geared towards making these goods easy and accesible to everyone and it describes every aspect and detail in a way one would teach a complete novice or a child. So if you are not confident about your skills this is the book for you. The pages are gloss and there are many photos of the products and the procedures. Also there are photos of all the ingredients and equipment.
The book is divided into 2 sections: 1) BASICS Ingredients Equipment Techniques
2)BAKING Quick breads,muffins and scones Enriched dough Laminated dough Fillings, glazes, toppings and spreads
The Basics section is quite extensive having 65 pages. All the ingredients and equipment are thoroughly discussed and the whys and hows of the techniques are revealed and explained. The author also discusses the unhealthy qualities of trans fats and even though he includes various fats in this section he recommends the use of pure butter instead of shortening/margarine for the recipes.
The ingredients in the recipes are listed in Metric, Imperial and Volume measurements to fascilitate all users.
In the scones etc section I like the Swiis carrot cake (after all the author is Swiss) that uses butter not oil and hazelnut meal. Having mentioned oil, the recipes made with it (eg zucchini bread) are nothing special, but if you substitude melted butter or at least replace some of the oil with it the taste of the products gets a boost. I also like the Tirolean chocolate and the mixed berry muffins. There is even a recipe for whole wheat cinnamon raisin bagels.
In the Enriched dough section the Brioche uses the proper method of refrigerating for a few hours before baking, which enhances the taste. There are several variations of brioche like lemon brioche doughnuts and rum-raisin-almond brioche. I also like the Apple kuchen using a brioche base. Other tasty recipes are the Russian braid and sweet glazed cinnamon buns, but really, in this section all the recipes are good.
The laminated section includes croissants and danish (of course) using both plain and chocolate dough. There is also a savory variation using whole wheat, ham and cheese.
Then come the various toppings (like crumb/streusel), glazes (like lemon/sugar) and fillings (almond,cinnamon etc).
Finally there is an appendix that includes troubleshooting, resources, recommended reading, glossary and index.
A low price combined with such quality makes this book a must for those interested in the subject.
