(Product Fills a Huge Void in the Marketplace) 『Why is it impossible to find paperboard containers for storing homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt?! I spent several hours searching the internet and reading blogs by many, many people lamenting the fact that no one produces these containers and sells them in reasonable quantities. Apparently, no one had navigated to Amazon!
The Sweet Bliss containers definitely fill a hole in the marketplace. If you are an individual who occasionally makes homemade ice cream, it is not economical to have to buy plain white containers by the case, which usually means buying 500+ containers and buying the lids separately (which, by the way, are generally NOT sold in the same quantities as the containers, so for a minimum order of a few hundred dollars, you end up with 500 containers and maybe 1200 lids). That is where this container comes in! It is a perfect quart-size for homemade treats and has a very well designed lid to both prevent condensation inside of the package and prevent freezer burn. I had previously been using either tupperware (which causes condensation) or directly vented take-out soup containers (which cause freezer burn).
The package size is appropriate and the cost per carton of approximately $1 is affordable since they will help the ice cream keep longer. The cartons are well constructed and very uniform. The two patterns available are both nice. I would like to be able to get plain white containers that are the exact same construction as these for ice cream that I am just storing for myself. I would like to see a "mixed pattern" option available so you can get both patterns in the 25-count package. It would make for a nice variety and help differentiate between the flavors, like fruity flavors in the pink and other flavors in the wooden barrels.
The entry areas on the lids are a nice touch, but I found it difficult to read some of the written names on the containers easily because the pattern did somewhat interfere with the writing area on the wooden barrel pattern. I used a ball point pen and then switched to a thin sharpie, but I still couldn't just look down into the freezer and read the labels. I had to actually pick up the ice cream and tilt the container to be able to read the flavor. It would also be great to be able to get these in a 2 quart size, although 2 quart recipes are easily broken down into 2 containers.

(The King's Singers in their element) 『The King's Singers got started a few decades ago doing exclusively classical material, and most of that was pre-1700. Now, many years on, (and after several changes in the group's membership) they have long since branched out into pop and other genres.
This CD (along with another similar one,"Watching the White Wheat") really show off their UK roots, with English, Scottish, and Irish folksongs. The arrangements are mostly quite good, and all the performances are excellent. Deserving of special mention are: (on the slow, poignant side)"Annie Laurie", and"The Ash Grove". [Note: the arrangement of"Annie Laurie"heard here is different from, and I think inferior to, the arrangement they did on an old out-of-print LP called"Atlantic Bridge", where they did both Britsh and American folksongs -- that LP is Highly Recommended (if you can find it -- good luck!)]
Anyway, back to the review: on the up-tempo side, two very fun tunes are"Going to Towyn"and"Mairi's Wedding". For you singers out there, the score for the latter is available in a 3-part arrangement, and is rather easy to learn.』

(A Timeless Tradition) 『I have been listening to this choir since 1982. I wore out the original tape, in the days before CD's. I have been to the actual performance, a week before Christmas three times and am going back this year 2005.
The performance is so delicate, yet so powerful that it is emotional and moving, regardless of your orientation. Imagine this performance, in the manificent HH Richardson-designed Trinity Church, Copley Square, Boston. People wait for hours to get in. The lights go out, the Choir, brass timpani and organ just work so well together. One by one, candles are lit, and the huge church comes alive. The choir processes down the asiles singing in strength and everyone joins in.
It is a spiritual experience even if you are not religious. The strength of the performance invites you to participate. I find myself singing louder than I do anywhere else.
After my first child was born, I held her in my arms, and "Candlelight Carol" became my anthem: How do you capture The wind on the water? How do you count all the stars in the sky? How can you measure The love of a mother Or how can you write down A baby's first cry?
I am not a musician and to my ear, the Chorus is professional. The tunes are classic, but they bring a new life to familiar tunes.
If you've been feeling stressed out, this is the perfect time to calm the nerves, focus on meaning and purpose, and let you enjoy yourself for a few minutes.
If you can't attend, do the next best thing, get the CD, turn it up till you hear the bass of the organ rumble your rafters and sing your heart out.

(A nice blend of music for Christmas) 『This is one of my favorite discs at Christmas time. It is at once peaceful and calm, yet joyous and expectant. There are the usual brass and organ carols, but also stunning arrangements and performances of lesser-known things. Prime among these are the setting of"Away in a Manger"that makes me want to pull off the highway and listen just to that song without distractions, and the pulsing, exciting"What Strangers are These", which I have never heard anywhere else. Chorally, the disc is a little unsatisfying because of balance issues with the rest of the disc--some songs are loud, others very soft, so it makes it hard to listen to without having to adjust the volume periodically. However, I still wouldn't trade it for all the Messiahs in the world!』

(A truly great, no nonsense movie!) 『The very first movies, relied upon exaggerated acting and the actors' good looks. Then, along came the 'talkies' - and voices assumed great importance. With the advent of 'talkies' came the necessity to tell a good story - cinematically. Today, the emphasis is all on 'special effects', 'shock value', 'sex, and foul language.
For a relatively brief period between the coming of talkies and the modern cinematographic masterpieces, there was a halcyon period where excellently acted and expertly directed films were made of exceptionally good stories - often based on first rate novels.
'The Sweet Smell of Success' is one such movie. The actors are highly competent, the acting is superb, the story is great and the direction is first rate. 'The Sweet Smell of Success' comes together exceptionally well and is a first rate movie in all respects.
I would recommend it to anyone who wishes first rate entertainment.』
("AN APPLE MADE OF ARSENIC.") 『One of the problems with studying in film school, being a movie buff and getting older is that at some point in ones' life a man ventures into the video store, peruses the shelves and reaches the conclusion that he has seen every movie worth seeing. I thought I was getting there until a few years ago when I heard about and checked out "The Sweet Smell of Success". It was like that with "Chinatown", which I never saw until the 1990s and now consider one of the best films ever. "Sweet Smell of Success" holds up totally even though it is black-white, set in 1957. Burt Lancaster is J.J., based on Walter Winchell, who was a leading accuser of Communists in the media. Tony Curtis is a lackey publicist who lives on the whim of those who pay him to place items in various columns, which means he must grovel at the feet of clients and columnists. J.J. plays him like a fiddle. This has lines so vitriolic and perfect, Frank Manciewics in "All About Eve" is no more biting, and Bette Davis in "Eve" bites with the best of 'em. Lancaster just fills the screen with irony and sardonic, hurtful wit. Curtis fends it off with skill, it is like a fencing match. Anybody who has any desire to study dialogue must watch and memorize this. Everything is tremendous; the acting, the directing, the score, the noir shadows of New York at night. The music is unreal, lots of horns, filling the room with its wailing sobs of a corrupt, naked city. A love story between J.J.'s little sis and a musician (Martin Milner I think, who was in "Adam 12"), is the heart of the story. It is the one true, good thing, but J.J. is a monster. Perhaps Bob Towne had this in mind when he cast John Huston to be an incestuos father in "Chinatown". The inference, being the '50s, is much more subtle but it seems J.J. has the hots for sis and wants nobody to have her. He brands the musician a Commie, using sycophant secondary journalists to keep his own hands clean. Any chance for this dark one to have a happy ending goes down the tubes when sis, as much to torment her bro, kills herself. Curtis is utterly ammoral. His picture appears in Webster's next to the word ammoral. Many films have played off this theme. "Swimming With Sharks" (1996, Kevin Spacey, Frank Whaley) comes to mind. If this could be 20 stars I'd give it 20.』
(smart, sharp, thrilling, and made me shiver) 『I watched this film several months ago, and still the characters stand out sharply in my mind. Tony Curtis plays Sid Falco marvelously, as a man whose mind is quick with an excuse, an accusation, a bit of flattery, whatever the occasion calls for; this is a small, slick man, swimming around the ankles of larger and more powerful men. He knows he's an unscrupulous guy, but wants to work his way up the food chain. Sometimes you think he cares about going too far in his pursuit of fame and wealth - Curtis gives Falco moments of blank pause, expressions of troubled calculation - but he goes ahead anyway with every dirty plot he thinks will serve him well. As the cold colossus J.J. Hunsecker, Burt Lancaster seriously gave me chills; he delivers a brilliant and well-controlled performance. He's sharp and clean, with his powerful stature, squared jaw, and steely glasses; his speech is quiet and precise, and even his little gestures seem to send ripples through the room. I also quite enjoyed Susan Harrison as his sister, Susan, who's winsome and worn down, but still firm enough to try and get out from under her older brother's thumb; I liked how even though she's nineteen, she's got old, tired eyes, an older spirit.
I loved the screaming bright lights and deep shadows of New York City, the energy that ran through the film in electric currents. I enjoyed peering into every bar and jazz club and seedy room that Sid Falco pops up in. I liked how Susan and her beau, a steady and honest jazz musician, seem to speak in clear, round tones while Falco's and Hunsecker's dialogue comes out in a sharp patter, full of quick sharp stabs and quiet turns of the knife. Amidst the poisonous words, the lies and slander, the jibes and jokes that lead to uneasy laughter, you wait and watch for someone with integrity to (hopefully) prevail. I loved how the film shows us the power of words (even just a few words) wielded effectively, whether for good or - in a lot of cases - for the purpose of destroying people.』
(Holy Crap!!) 『I always sort of put off seeing this even though I've heard good things about it. I think it was because Tony Curtis is in it and the only thing I've ever seen him do were really bad introductions to some Alfred Hitchcock DVDs. In those introductions, Curtis fumbled his lines (which were often filled with errors) and so I assumed he was the worst actor in the world. I should kick myself.
This movie is not only one of the best "noir" films I've seen but one of the best movies I've ever seen PERIOD.
It's included in the noir category despite it not being a crime drama at all. The reason for this is it's shadow-filled cinematography and its theme of corruption. According to this movie, human beings are bleak, cold-hearted creatures.
It's about a Broadway columnist (played by Burt Lancaster in one of his best roles) who manipulates everyone he comes in contact with. He is one of the vilest, cold-hearted bastards I've ever seen in a movie because he's just so real. This isn't a noir hit-man in a fedora hat. This guy could be real and I'm sure some of us have met or will meet someone like him. Tony Curtis plays a bastard publicity agent though you sort of feel bad for him even despite his faults. He's the "protagonist" and we are told the story through his eyes. There are a couple of characters who have integrity and are not so corrupted but they only count as victims of the manipulation.
The acting is top-notch. Both Lancaster and Curtis had me in awe throughout the whole movie. Usually movies about "show business" don't interest me all that much but this movie was fascinating. This is dark look at NYC life in the 1950s. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Coming of age in a seminal era) 『Music, direction, relationships, friendships, high-school, sex, peers, etc., THE WANDERERS has it all. So when it came to our town in the early 80's, it struck a chord with a few pals for the way it portrayed a group of friends who hung together thru thick and thin while growing up together. We related.
So much so that a frame was clipped from the film and sent to a jacket company on the Left Coast and 18 of us got Wanderers jackets, just like the ones in the film. The day they came in we opened the box outside the theatre, put them on in admiration and went in and saw the film once again. (I've seen it probably 75 times now.) Sometime in the mid-90's we were paid a visit by Rose and Phil Kaufman (Mom and Pop to us), who posed for pictures with the 10 or so Telluride Wanderers still in town.
I must say that the film has held up better than many of the jackets, some threadbare and some stretching to fit older and larger bodies. The film still says what it did when I first saw it, i.e., that friendship is important and can get you thru tough times, that honor is important, and that even though you move on in life, the soundtrack of your younger life can be taken with you as you grow up.』

(More than meets the eye) 『As with most Phil Kaufman films, there's a lot more going on than meets the eye. Kaufman is after nothing less than the collision of the end of the 50's as it crashes headlong into the 60's. Featuring a cast of unknowns ( at that time ) and a fantastic soundtrack, Kaufman fills The Wanderers with great character performances such as Terror, the 300 pound gang leader, and the Mob guys in XXl-size Hawaiian shirts. Ken Wahl and Karen Allen lead along with a terrific Linda Mans ( Days of Heaven). And because it just wouldn't be a Phil Kaufman film without a metaphysical layer, there is the unexplained presence of the Ducky Boys, whirling dervishes of ultra violence that might not even be real. It's a film that never received the attention it deserved. And who can forget the opening frame as that first chord of "Walk Like A Man" thunders out. (Where's the DVD????) 『Sweet Valley High was one of the sharpest, most clever, and terribly underrated teen shows out there that unjustly got cancelled after four delightful seasons, and has not yet been released on DVD. While I wish the series would have concentrated more on serious issues, the tone of the series was light, fluffy, and fun with some seriousness thrown into the mix.
Kidnapped was one of the more serious, but ludicrous, storylines from Season 1, edited as one episode for this video release. The first episode is like any other of Sweet Valley High; cute and harmless. Elizabeth volunteers at the hospital, where a famous talk show host is a patient. This grabs her twin sister Jessica's interest and she tries to sneak in to meet the man and nab a job as his new co-host. In order to do that, she has to pretend to be Elizabeth, with humorous results. On a more serious note, while at the hospital, a quiet orderly, Peter, becomes fascinated by Elizabeth and begins sending her gifts as a secret admirer. This pisses off her boyfriend, Todd, who thinks his best friend, Winston, is the one sending the gifts because he and Elizabeth have grown so close. This causes a rivalry between the friends and, in the second episode, makes Winston a suspect when Peter kidnaps Elizabeth. The third episode, the most ridiculous of the three, finds Peter, who escaped from the police car at the end of episode 2, kidnapping Jessica, who he thinks is Elizabeth. Episode 2 also introduces Nick, a charming rich transfer student who grabs Jessica and Lila's attention, and unknowingly comes between Todd and Elizabeth in the season finale, setting up Season 2.
This is a fun video, but is definitely not the best of Season 1, which overall, is the best season of the series. The episodes are addicting, but rather far-fetched. The earlier episodes of the season are far superior and I can't wait till the seasons are released on DVD. It's long been delayed.』

Unlike the first film, written and directed by Ralph Bakshi, this was written by Fred Halliday, Eric Monte, and Robert Taylor, as well as being directed by the latter.
The film is told in a series of short vignettes, each detailing a misadventure in the life of Fritz the Cat.
Skip Hinnant returns to voice the feline, now unhappily married and living on welfare in the 1970s. The movie opens with Fritz being berated by his wife. So, being a responsible husband, Fritz lights a joint and drifts away into a series of irreverent misadventures, beginning with him seducing a young "girl." Later, he meets God in the form of a homeless wino. Then, he becomes a member of the Nazi party, where he meets Adolph Hitler (represented by a dog). Finally, Fritz finds himself in the middle of a political assassination plot, before meeting an Indian guru in the city sewer, and lastly, meeting Satan (allowing the filmmakers the opportunity to add homosexual stereotypes to their repertoire).
Also in the film is one very long, drawn out, dull 1940s sequence that runs about six minutes and could've been cut out of the film without affecting anything.
Still, the sequel goes more for entertainment than the first film did and some moments in this film are much funnier than anything in the first movie.
The sequel avoids much of the social commentary provided by the first movie. Many of the racial/cultural issues are similarly avoided. It still has its fair share of racial stereotypes, but takes a completely different direction overall. Once again, it wouldn't be hard to brand this movie "racist" to an extent, but the stereotypical behavior is so outlandish that it doesn't elicit much reaction.
At the risk of over generalizing, this film will appeal more to stoners than anyone else. The sequel is on par with the original, but not particularly entertaining or anything special really. It's amusing, but if you never see it, you won't be missing a whole lot.

Anyway, I got on Amazon later that day and bought Fritz and The Nine Lives of Fritz and allowed my wife to give me them for Xmas. My wife thinks they are puerile, prurient, and amateurish, but I still like them. I had forgotten that these were R. Crumb characters, which entails some hilarious, if not sophomoric social commentary on the pretensions of hippies and such. All the prurient scenes are of pets and farm animals, so if you get turned on, well, that's your issue to deal with, for me I don't worry about that and just enjoy these classics from my youth. You should too.』

The reason for me that this cartoon is SOO COOL is because of the MASSIVE FOUL LANGUAGE!!! I think that the soundtrack could be better but the movie still AWESOME!.

This DVD cuts out a lot! This was a long series, but I was drawn into the story of Leticia Padillia Solis and Don Fernando. Despite the editing it is a totally engaging, engrossing story! Lety becomes a complete woman with humor, understanding, and self-introspection, she isn't demeaned or fooled, and she gets a man who appreciates how smart, fun, kind, and wise she is.
There are many travails Lety overcomes with the help of her true friends and Tomas, her best guy pal (equally feo) helps her run her own highly successful business and save the day, despite the cunning and drama of HIS love: Alicia, a beautiful bombshell.
OH THE DRAMA! Remember to stop the DVD to eat and work or you could starve and find yourself without a job (I am speaking from personal experience). If you speak Spanish and English well you might disagree with some of the subtitling, but overall it not a major issue. This is my second time buying this DVD, I wore the first one out. Many critics were afraid to judge the film on its own merits and placed it on a pedestal where they declared such a film "off limits" to any kind of real criticism. Unconsciously the subject matter affected their judgments. Here was a film about a very delicate subject--the death of innocent children. The characters in the film (parents of the deceased children) were all shattered. It was as if criticizing the film was akin to criticizing these parents as well as any parent who had experienced such a tragic loss. But from the point of view of effective drama, the film is virtually a complete failure. Very little of it rings true at all.
Except for some very nice cinematography and an affecting musical score, 'The Sweet Hereafter' plods along at a snail's pace. The director's intent is to display the range of emotions these parents felt in the aftermath of losing their children. But what is so profound about focusing on such grief? The main character, a negligence lawyer, goes around the town convincing the parents to join in a class action lawsuit against the unspecified person or situation which caused the terrible accident. Most of the parents he sees agree to join the lawsuit (a lot of these scenes with the parents are drawn out and could have been easily condensed). The lawyer finally encounters one man who gives him a hard time. This is perhaps the most dramatic conflict that comes up during the film. But this one towns person's opposition to joining the lawsuit is completely vague. Why is he so against joining the lawsuit? Why is so angry at the lawyer? Because he feels the lawyer is profiting at the expense of the townspeople? Even so, is it really believable that he doesn't want to get to the bottom of what happened as opposed to simply dropping the whole case?
The ending of the film is even more unbelievable. The negligence lawyer never seems to have a definitive plan to try the case. He alludes to various factors that caused the accident, such as a faulty guard rail or a defective bolt inside the bus. A real negligence lawyer would never have taken such a huge case in the first place without feeling that he could be successful. It almost seems like he thinks that he uncover the 'truth' during the discovery process. A real lawyer would have already had some tangible evidence (already uncovered) that would have convinced him to go forward. Furthermore, when the young survivor lies in her deposition, stating that the bus driver was driving too fast, the seemingly smart lawyer folds up like a deck of cards and decides not to cross-examine her. A real lawyer could have made mince-meat of her but he chooses to quit the case and leave all his clients in the lurch. In real life he probably would have been hauled in front of an ethics board.
And why does the young survivor decide to lie in the end? Why does she lie knowing that she is accusing the innocent bus driver? Why does she want to case to 'go away'? Is it that she's so traumatized by the accident that she simply wants to forget about it? Everything is left so open and vague in this film that we never understand any of the characters' motivations.
Lastly, there's a lot of lame talk (mostly over the phone) between the lawyer and his drug-addicted, rebellious daughter. Seemingly there's supposed to be some kind of parallel between the lawyer's personal angst and the angst of the townspeople (this is the lawyer's defense when that one townspeople berates him before the climactic deposition scene). All this conflict between the lawyer and the daughter is gratuitous and simply does not work cinematically. We hardly ever see those two characters together and their conflict is basically a separate story which has no real place in this film.
The Sweet Hereafter basically lacks substance. It congratulates itself for displaying the raw emotion of grief but lacks a central antagonist to engage us. An examination of grief in itself is not enough to sustain an entire story. Whenever conflicts do arise in this film, they are episodic, unclearly motivated and for the most part, lacking the ring of truth. If you're strictly into atmosphere and mood, this is the film for you. But if you're looking for a strong story arc with convincing conflicts, you will not find it in 'The Sweet Hereafter'.

(bone chilling drama at its best) 『The Sweet Hereafter is a film you're not likely to forget anytime soon. The movie portrays human beings as they can really be--greedy, confused after a huge tragic loss, in denial of guilt and more. The plot moves along at a good pace and the storyline is absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, this movie is not for everyone since the plot is rather haunting and dark; this is anything but a family film. The actors do a superb job and the cinematography is excellent.
When the action begins, an ambulance chasing lawyer Mitchell Stevens (played by Ian Holm) races up to a small Canadian town after a school bus accident has cost the lives of most of the small town's children. Mitchell approaches the townsfolk to build a huge lawsuit against the people whom he believes he can determine to be guilty for having caused the accident. Perhaps the school bus wasn't regularly maintained--or maybe the manufacturer of the bus used poor quality bolts; Mitchell doesn't care, he just wants a piece of the action.
Of course, some embrace the idea of a lawsuit--but yet others want to forget about any trial and they make no bones about it. In particular, look for Tom McCamus who plays Sam Burnell, a father with a dirty secret and Sarah Polley plays Sam's daughter Nicole. While Sam wants the lawsuit to pay medical bills and probably make a buck off this lemon, his daughter Nicole is not so comfortable with this idea. We come to see that so many of the townsfolk have dark secrets of their own; and even the lawyer Mitchell Stevens has a rather troubled relationship with his daughter Zoë (played wonderfully by Caerthan Banks). There is also the very emotionally scarred bus driver who survived the accident, Dolores Discolt (Gabrielle Rose), who eventually makes it plain that she doesn't want to be judged in a court of law by a jury made up of people who don't know her at all.
As secrets and the rest of the plot unfold, questions arise: Will Dolores change her mind about the lawsuit and want it after all? What about the father of two children who saw the tragedy as he followed the bus in his pickup--will Billy (Bruce Greenwood) ever change his mind and decide a lawsuit is a good idea? And what about Mitchell's own relationship with his daughter Zoë--is there any hope for things to get better between the two of them? Keep an eye out for excellent, practically seamless flashbacks and flash forwards that really impress me with just how smoothly they are woven into the film.
The DVD comes with a plethora of extras: we get an audio commentary by film director Adam Egoyan; and there is a Charlie Rose interview with Egoyan as well. I especially liked the "Q&A" extra with several members of the cast. We even get some biographies and filmographies, too.
All in all, The Sweet Hereafter is an excellent film that I highly recommend. Reserve it for a time when you can handle a heavy film about people and how they can truly be when confronted with a seemingly insurmountable loss. You won't regret watching it. 』

(Quiet, dreamlike, somber, and riveting) 『Don't watch this if you are subject to becoming depressed by sad movies. The Sweet Hereafter is, however, one of those films that has a dreamlike quality that sucks you in. The art of it is very appealing to me. Some will say it is slow, too quiet, a downer. But I think the emotion of it provides more than enough intensity.
The movie is based on a novel which is itself somewhat based on a true story of a small town in Texas where tragically many of the town's children were killed in a schoolbus accident, and ambulance-chasing lawyers descended on the town like a swarm of hungry locusts. The townspeople eventually received hundreds of millions of dollars in damages from a company which may or may not have really been responsible for the accident.
The movie takes this premise in a different direction. It focuses on one lawyer who comes to town and interviews witnesses, survivors, and moms and dads who lost their kids. The lawyer himself is going through a vaguely similar personal crisis -- losing his daughter to drugs. Great disruption is bubbling in the town because of the tragedy and the impending, potentially enriching, lawsuit. The ending is a surprise, turning everything upside down for a reason that has nothing to do with the accident, and no one will ever likely know the real reason.
What is the movie really about? It is about grief turning to boiling anger, mixed with greed. It is about the secret lives of ordinary people in small towns. It is about how justice can be meted out in strange ways.

I mean, it's candy. Not only is it candy, it's milk chocolate, and candy (especially milk chocolate) should be sweet.
However, these chips bring together that perfect balance of savory versus sweet. Like chocolate covered pretzels, but better because they're potato chips! The little ridges help with the texture, I think that was key, or perhaps I am just biased towards ridged potato chips.

Gaby comes home early from work and discovers Adam having sex with his secretary in her bed. In her anger and needing some revenge she goes to The Sweet Spot alone, hoping to connect with someone. Demetri is happy to comply and takes her to his home above the night club for the night. They have an amazing connection and a lot of sex. Adam wants to get back together with Gaby but she won't have him. She continues seeing Demetri.
REVIEWER'S OPINION (WITH VAGUE SPOILERS): There is a lot of explicit sex, with rear door activity and whip lashing. The story was pretty good but a few parts could have been better developed. Lee has a small book that is introduced but not explained how it fits into the story. How Adam and his partner were making money from the con could have been better described as well as their history and relationship. I was not happy with Gaby doing something illegal, even though she had a sympathetic motive. She's the heroine but will have to pay a price. Other than that it was a pretty good story. The author's writing style kept me interested.

(Low-calorie natural sweetener with no bitter aftertaste) 『SlimSweet contains a natural sweetener called lo han guo, also referred to as momordica grosvenori. It is produced from a sweet berry that grows in China. SlimSweet tastes very good, with no bitter aftertaste, and this company is offering lo han guo at a far cheaper price that any other company marketing this natural sweetener. However, it is important to note that this product is not 100% calorie free, as the product label seems to claim. The front of the label states that this product contains ".9 carbs per serving," which clearly means that SlimSweet contains slightly less than one gram of carbohydrates per serving. There is a very good reason that a serving of this product has been sized so that it contains slightly less than a gram of carb per serving: legally, if a serving of a processed food contains less than a gram of either fat, protein or carbohydrates, for whichever of them that is less than a gram, the manufacturer is not required to report its calories. This, however, is the unvarnished truth about carbohydrates, any carbohydrates: in all times and places, they have 4 calories per gram (technically, 3.8 calories, which rounds to 4.0). Even sugar alcohols and fiber officially have 4 calories per gram, even though they are counted as 0 calories by people on low-carb diets because the body can't digest them. For SlimSweet, then, a 1/5 teaspoon serving with .9 gram of carb means it contains not 0 calories, but 3.6 calories. That's not so bad if all you are doing is drinking tea or coffee and using a couple servings a day. But what if you want to bake with it? If so, you need to look at the larger picture: 1 tablespoon equals 15 servings (5 servings per teaspoon times three teaspoons per tablespoon), or 54 calories, and a cup of SlimSweet, which equals 16 tablespoons, is a whopping 864 calories. It's crucial to remember that if you choose to bake with this product and factor it in accordingly when you do your calorie count.
The second thing to remember in baking with this sweetener is that you will have to experiment to see for yourself if. to your personal taste, lo han guo lives up to the oft-repeated claim that, like stevia, it is 200-300 times as sweet as table sugar. In my experience, this is not true with either sweetener. Per my taste, SlimSweet is, maybe, 5 times as sweet as table sugar (which may be another reason why the manufacturer's lists a serving size of 1/5 teaspoon, because a serving size of table sugar is 1 teaspoon). Per my taste, stevia is, at best, 8 times as sweet as table sugar, because I use 1/8 teaspoon for tea or coffee where I might have used 1 teaspoon of table sugar. Translated for baking, I would use about 1/3 cup of SlimSweet (lo han guo) for 1 cup of table sugar and about 1/8 cup of stevia for 1 cup of table sugar.
There are several advantages to baking with SlimSweet (lo han guo) vs. stevia. SlimSweet is granulated to have the same texture as table sugar and it has no bitter aftertaste, which stevia can have if you use more than a tiny amount. Even knowing this, you will need to experiment if you want to bake with this product. For example, when I recently made a batch of chocolate cookies, I substituted 2/3 C. of SlimSweet and 1/2 tsp. stevia for 2 cups of table sugar and the cookies should have been sickeningly sweet, but they were not. They tasted just about as sweet as table-sugar-sweetened cookies. Their texture was also off. They were supposed to be chewy cookies, but they had the texture of ginger snaps. I believe this is because of some important chemical-reaction issues that come up when using this product or stevia as a sugar substitute in baking recipes: (1) table sugar reacts very differently with all the other ingredients in the baking recipe than various sugar substitutes, including lo han guo; (2) depending on how much sweeter than table sugar your sweetening agent is, you will use relatively less volume of it than you would of table sugar, which will require you to adjust the amount of liquid you use and the baking time and temperature you use.
Finally, you might want to know that Dr. Marcus Laux recommended lo han guo in his January 2007 health newsletter as a good sugar substitute, along with stevia, xylitol, sucanat, inulin, agave nectar/syrup, and rice, barley and brown rice malt syrups. (Pretty good stuff) 『I wasn't so sure about this, especially since it's kinda expensive. But what can I say, I like to try new things. It tastes like brown sugar, so it's good in coffee, tea and even baking things (I made oatmeal cookies with it last night with excellent results). It says a serving is 1/5 a teaspoon, but I like my stuff SWEET, so it usually ends up being 1 to 1 (1 teaspoon of slim sweet = 1 teaspoon of sugar) for me. I usually use a stevioside powder to sweeten my tea, and I usually use 1/5 a teaspoon for that.
