(Sweet Tunes Is This) 『One of the most abrupt turnarounds in music history (listen to their first album, it's like an entirely different band. Remember the difference between Radioheads 'Pablo Honey' and 'The Bends'? Well, if you do, you get the idea), Sweet Dreams is an astonishing piece of 80's pop history. I am suprised how little this album has aged or how it has avoided feeling dated. Sure, there are a few sounds and synths here and there that do bring you right there, but Annie sings with such gusto, and the vocals are so upfront. A lot of music from this era have the vocals drowning in production, not so here. The songs are meaty and catchy, the elctronica works, without taking away from the rest, making the record warm and edgy at the same time. There are of course lot of moments anyone aged 11 in 1983 will remember, specialy Love is a stranger and Sweet Dreams, but I never bought this album back then, so discovering all the rest was a real treat in January 2008.
Oh, and I really enjoyed the bonus tracks on this release. The 7'' b-sides are good, even fun, and remembering buying 12'' singles, it's always a treat hearing those remixes again or for the first time!

Musically, it's an interesting batch of rarities and live cuts with a trio of choice studio selections. The rarities will delight fans; a pair of rare live songs from 1958 from Club 47 in Massachusetts. While the quality is not the highest, they showcase a young and pure voice already skilled at interpreting traditional folks songs ("I Will Never Marry" and "Barbra Allen"). Live songs later in the album find Joan in the 2000's interpreting modern folk classics writers like Steve Earle.
She also shows here ability to reach the heart of other persons' songs, like Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" (studio version) and Bob Dylan's "With God on Our Side" (live version). Her own writing has also yielded classics, with the obvious - "Diamonds and Rust," speaking of Dylan - here in a 2008 concert version. "How Sweet The Sound" contains this 15 song mixture, which makes it very nice for folkies or fans of Joan Baez, but not essential.

(For The Fans) 『This companion piece to the fine American Masters program of the same title is a historical record of a lifetime of music and activism. It includes a couple of polished, slick tracks from studio albums (ONE DAY AT A TIME, BLESSED ARE...), but is otherwise made up of previously unreleased live recordings from Baez concerts spanning the decades. The quality of the sound varies (Barbara Allen the poorest, the studio stuff the clearest), but Joan's fans (this fan, anyway) will consider this recording a welcome, sweet gift from a gifted artist. Anyone who owns or has enjoyed the boxed set, RARE, LIVE&CLASSIC, will like this collection; its almost an addendum to that anthology (most of the repeated songs are different performances).
In her earliest period, when her voice was at its purest, Baez was excruciatingly serious, but at the same time, there was a sweetness that balanced the cold, detached quality of songs that were often hundreds of years old. She connected with these old melodies in a special way that turned them from museum artifacts into compelling stories, deeply felt and communicated. Back then, I sometimes got the feeling Joan was singing only to me -- they seemed that intimate. Although I've moved on to an extremely broad range of music, and collected every kind of music imaginable, I credit Joan Baez for sparking my love of music at the age of seven (1960), and so, along with just a handful of others whose careers have been almost as long (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Ian Tyson), I've kept up with her career. There are many touchstones here, some welcome (Joan's own "Song For David," Tom Waits' "Day After Tomorrow" from her latest release, here represented in a live version), some not so (the long, musically boring "With God On Our Side," the nasal, inexplicable hit, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"), but as a whole, reviewing Joan's 50-year long career on this brief CD was lovely. I even enjoyed, warts and all, the raucous, live duet with Bob Dylan, "I Pity The Poor Immigrant." The shining highlight of this collection is a 2009 live recording of the self-penned, "Love Song To A Stranger," accompanied by guitar and piano. Even with a voice revealing some of the inevitable wear and tear of time, this performance rivals the studio version, recorded over thirty years earlier!
I recommend this CD in tandem with the DVD, which has around 90 minutes worth of bonus material, not seen on the PBS airing of HOW SWEET THE SOUND. Get the Deluxe DVD Edition (it's only a couple of bucks more), and you'll have both the film and the CD soundtrack.』

When artists have big, beautiful voices, I love it when they actually USE them, and in this album, Linda does. She hits some of those extraordinarily high notes in songs like "Unusual Way" and "Man of la Mancha". She uses her big Broadway-style voice for most of the songs. I listened to this album with headphones, and boy oh boy, did it get loud at points. This artist can BELT IT OUT. Some of the songs (especially the better-known) are changed around a bit to fit Linda's style. "On the Street Where You Live" is slower with a jazzy/blues sort of feel. "Edelweiss" has a slow tempo, and Linda uses her breathy voice for part of it (but also hits some of those high notes). I didn't recognize a lot of these songs, and I listen to a lot of Broadway. "On the Street Where You Live", "Some People", "Don't Rain on My Parade", "The Impossible Dream", and "Edelweiss" are some of the more well known songs. But even though I had never heard a lot of the songs, I enjoyed them immensely. Linda's absolutely beautiful, perfect, clear voice makes all of them worthwhile listening. Overall, if you like Broadway, you will probably enjoy this album, which takes some well known Broadway songs and "re-does" them a bit, but still creates an enjoyable listen.』

Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. This set of mini-documentaries and interviews are a treasure that is woefully overlooked in the growing interest in silent film groups.
Oh - to have it in DVD!
The silent star recounting their excitement and memories are infectious. This is a classic work - very well done - and but for the intro music and some graphics, holds it's age .
As many silent film collections that have come forward in the last few years - some very obscure - this set would have more mass-appeal - and including the later classic actors' views on the silents would be interesting to Classic Movie Fans as well.
That it includes very major silent film stars interviewed in-depth is remarkable and one can see and feel time roll back - and the actor/actress reborn. Some of my favorites are Viola Dana recollecting the death of her fiance in an aerial stunt for the movies. The other is (I believe - I'm writing this from memory) Hal Roach's ribauld memories and also King Vidor's observations.
It's like sitting on the backlot of an old movie studio - and hearing the gossip retold of the teens and twenties!
This set caught my interest in silent film when I was in my teens viewing it in the early 1980's. It never let-go.

I always prefer movies that are based on true events and characters, so this was my cup of tea. The film provides a fascinating glimpse of the most crucial moment in French history. Great scenography and costume, and an excellent cast. Minus for an actress who made me think of "Nip/Tuck" in the role of Marie Antoinette. It would also have felt more authentic with a French cast.』
(Very fun intro to the intricacies of the pre-Revolutionary Court of Louis XVI) 『The reviewers were awfully hard on this one. I must admit that I found it an excellent and fascinating entertainment, a stimulus to look into the historical sources as there are obviously inaccuracies.
I liked Swank's interpretation of the character. She has a mission - perhaps even lying to herself, it is unclear - and needs a mentor to learn the ropes of the Court intrigues. She finds one in a gigolo, for whom she also apparently grows to have genuine affection. They form a team with her husband, to steal a necklace as a way to gain political clout. Along the way, they expertly con a corrupt Cardinal, whom they play for a fool via his outsized ambitions and appetites, enlist a sleazily funny magician/seer to help, and create a scandal of historic proportions. Once caught, everyone falls, including the monarchy.
What is so fun is the portrayal this offers of the way that government worked at the time, from aristocratic privilege to reward and punishment. in social and historical context. I found it fascinating, though would have wanted much more detail, which I can only get from books. The scandal was a catalyst that ended a monarchy that was rotten already.
Regarding the characters, the film adds much detail that can never be known. Thus, it is historical fiction. La Motte-Valois is ambitious and uses the leers available - sex, lies, and fraud. We do not know what she personally thought, etc. I found the acting uniformly excellent and subtle, with many layers that can be peeled away at later viewings. Perhaps she was a whore and simple con artist, perhaps her motives were noble to her. I liked the mix of motivations and characters. Her libertine husband is hilarious, her lover-mentor kind of sad in his love. The house minister is convincingly shrewd.
Recommended warmly for lovers of history and political intrigue.』

How can you beat that?) 『The Good The main portion of the DVD is from Skynyrd's appearance at the Loreley Festival in 1996, which was filmed for the German television program Rockpalast. The group's set is flawless as they rifle though some of their best material. The set didn't really get interesting for me until about eight songs in. For the first half Skynyrd focuses on lesser-known material; "I Ain't the One," "Double Trouble," and others. Once the crowd is into it, Skynyrd fires off hit after hit; "What's Your Name," "That Smell," "Simple Man," "Gimme Three Steps," "Call Me the Breeze," "Sweet Home Alabama," and "Free Bird."
The DVDs bonus material is from another performance in Germany. Only this time it features the original Lynyrd Skynyrd back in 1974. This three song performance of "Workin' For the MCA," "Free Bird," and "Sweet Home Alabama" is surprisingly of high quality. It was interesting to go from a hugh arena performance to a small club performance. After watching the '74 show you'll see how easy it was for the band to become as big as they did. As great as Johnny Van Zant is with Skynyrd today, his brother Ronnie was truly a better choice at vocals.
The Bad A longer performance of the '74 show or another show around that time would have been a better contrast to the main show.

(Get it for mainly the bonus footage...) 『The main concert featured on this DVD is pretty good, but some of the performances from some of the band members are a little off. The two main redeeming highlights of the main concert with the more contemporary lineup is them performing "Workin' For MCA" (which they no longer could do once they signed to CMC) and the cool guitar solos performed in series by the three guitarists. The band's performance on the Lyve From Steel Town DVD is flawless, and overall I recommend that one over this one if you don't want to get both. However, I encourage you to get both, because several songs on this DVD do not appear on the Steel Town DVD because the latter was recorded shortly after their awesome "Twenty" album was released, so several of their old numbers were replaced with material from "Twenty."
The best thing about this DVD, of course, is the vintage footage of the old Lynyrd Skynyrd with Ronnie, Ed King, et al performing back in 1974. The sound quality is predicatably bad, but not unbearably horrible like some bootleg VHS recordings you can find on ebay. One cool part of that footage features Ed King doing a nice, melodic solo before the last verse of "Free Bird" that later was always occupied by Billy Powell--interesting--never heard a live version of Free Bird without Billy's solo. The only bad part (and it's just humorous rather than annoying) of this classic footage is Ed King singing harmony on "Sweet Home"--yikes! No wonder they got the Honkettes later on! :)』

'Ekte Gjetost' means literally 'genuine goat cheese', but this cheese bears little resemblance to any "chevre" you've eaten recently. It's sweet. Some people think it tastes slightly like peanut butter. As one reviewer has already declared, it has roughly the texture of buffed-up Velveeta. It's one of the prides of Norway, and by confessing that I love the stuff, I'm making a case that I myself deserve the Nobel Peace Prize, since I'm a Swede. Ja då! Alltså! Pan-Scandinavianism, shall we say? If nationalism were only expressed by touting one's local cheese rather than one's military might or religious certainty!
This 'Tine ekte gjetost' is a tastier cheese than the more widely sold Ski Queen, which blends cow and goat milk. I have a bias here. When this award was named the Newbery winner of 2007, I glanced through it, asked why, and decided I wouldn't bother buying it.
Flashforward to the present, I as a teacher desperately need an activity to go with my discussion of the history of children's literature. And Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! (Are the exclamation points really necessary?) flashes into my mind. Fine. I'll use it. Guess that means I'll actually have to read it.
The foreword begins, "This is a part of the book that most people skip." Yes, yes it is. "This is the foreword--the part where the author tells why the book exists and why the reader might want to read it. And you can skip it, if you'e in a hurry." I want to, I really do. But I'm too nerdy for that and I read on. I learn that Schlitz is a librarian for a school that only has 17 children to a class, that as they study the middle ages the students have opportunities to build mini-catapults and castles, bake bread, tend herbs, to compose music and illuminate manuscripts" (p. viii) and it makes me want to cry because many classrooms across the country, around the world can't afford the resources or time to do such wonderful exercises. What do those classrooms get? I wish I could say this book, but that's probably not true either.
I kept reading, which proved to be very important since in the first monologue of Hugo, The Lord's Nephew, I learned that 'Friants' are boar droppings" (p. 2). Very important. Then I tried to imagine seventh and eighth graders saying "Followed his fraints straight to his bed and found it warm." I struggled. I suppose if framed properly students could have fun with it. At the very least, a teacher could say at least the friants weren't warm and steamy.
While looking across the interconnected 19 monologues and dialogues of children and young adults living in the Middle Ages, Schlitz does an excellent job of showing the differences among the classes and gender (and to a lesser degree, religion). Race remains completely unaddressed (It probably would have felt forced to try to incorporate). Schlitz makes an effort to make the characters relatable. The unfortunately named Taggot has a crush on a boy. Jack the half-wit is bullied and wants a friend. As I read on, the monologues grew on me. While I still think a teacher will have to do a bit of work to get their students to engage with the text, there are a lot of uses a teacher could use.
Activities to Do with the Book:
Students could actually perform the monologues, with attention to whose characters know whom and how they react to one another as they share the performing space.
If students are having trouble with the language, they could re-present the monologues in another time, with modern language, perhaps as journal entries. This could be used to show some of the universality of the conflicts.
Students could discuss life in the Middle Ages, the crucades, how the upper class maintained power in the medieval village, the timelessness of abuse, cheating, bullying, friendship, the political and economic reasons for going to war and on and on.

What a wonderful surprise to discover a book with wonderful stories interspersed with valuable and interesting tidbits of information about life in a medieval village. If you want a real treat, listen to the audio version produced by Recorded Books. It is truly superb!』

The author is a librarian who wanted to create a play with equal parts for more than 20 students. The result is a series of monologues (and a couple of dialogues) that jump off the page with characters whose opinions of their own life and others around them is shaded by their own circumstances and what life is like in the village.
You would never know how intriguing, entertaining, and compelling this book is without opening it. It has the color and vivid drawings of a book for a much younger child, but the reading level is intended for about 8th to 10th grade. An awesome book to bring a dry history lesson to life.』

What a fun read! Her love of historical fiction was evident as she interspersed some background information regarding the cultural history of this Medieval time period she shares with us. I learned a lot while being entertained and those are the two main purposes of reading. How marvelous that Schiltz was able to incorporate both! 』

(Really wonderful book) 『I am not typically a woman's book reader. I am a woman who generally reads sci-fi, fantasy, horror, thriller and some random genres here and there. I had come upon this book at the library on the recommended shelf and found a treasure. The night I started it, I stayed up until 2am ("Just one more chapter and then I'll go to bed") and accidentally took too long of a lunch the next day. I finished it the next night and I absolutely loved it. It's a sweet little story with great characters. You get interested in their lives right away and just have to know what happens. The main women are all so their own characters and you love them for all of it. The characters have integrity, morals and show that to be a good woman's book, you don't have to have steamy sex scenes but instead can focus on what most women want - a happy, healthy life and family. The struggle to make this happen and realizing when we've lost touch and are blind to it. I really appreciated this book and it came along at a great time when I'm trying to reflect on and improve my own life. I wrote the author and told her how much I enjoyed it and got a very nice email in return. I'll be picking up her other books this evening and will have likely devoured them by this weekend. 』
(Sweet life: How sweet it is!) 『"Sweet Life" by Mia King is pure beach reading...even if it's in mid-winter and the coast is miles away. The author, who has a flare for travel vignettes, re-creates such a vivid, off-the-beaten-path-where-the-locals-live slice of Hawaii that you can almost smell the salty ocean mingle with the fresh plumeria in the air...pass me a chunk of guava, please, ummm...now back to the book.
An extra star goes to an interesting plot that involves the main character, Marissa and her husband Paul, along with their young daughter, undertaking a major relocation from Manhattan to Hawaii due to Paul's job promotion. Oops, one star down; some of the plot is a bit too incredulous. I mean, what are the odds of meeting an annoying fellow passenger on an airplane, only to end up roommates who transform from total opposites to total friends? Other unrealistic situations bring Marissa together with two other women who end up being Marissa's roommates after her husband skips out on her. Since the plot forces many of the puzzle pieces in the main character's life together, I could not get fully lost in the book.
On the plus side, call me Pollyanna, but I love the fact that Paul, Marissa's husband who is on the brink of a breakdown, ends up being a squeaky-clean committed husband. It is a refreshing break from a divorce-thirsty society and the way Mia sets up these circumstances is quite ingenious, but definitely credible.
The author's recipes (her hallmark) add another layer of sweetness to the book. Call it a day, grab a blanket and head to the beach of your mind, this book is meant for pure paradisiacal escape.

(Heartwarming Story) 『I'm not sure that there is technically a genre called "mom lit," but I think I'd have to classify SWEET LIFE by Mia King as just that. SWEET LIFE is the story of Marissa, a wife and mother, who gives up her career and apartment in Manhattan to move to Hawaii for her husband's job. Oh and by the way, she hopes that by moving to Hawaii, she can save her marriage. This book definitely sounded like one that I'd enjoy with lots of family dynamics and conflict; and I'm happy to say that I did like it -- a lot. I am so glad that there are books out there for those of us who are "mature" (married with children) and that have interesting female characters.
I really enjoyed SWEET LIFE. It is a great story with some terrific and memorable characters. It's a relatively light, easy read; however, it also touches on some very serious (and very real) issues that affect many women in today's society. I have a feeling that you will be reminded of yourself, or even some of the women you know, when you read about the female characters in this story. I loved how this book showed the strength and resilience of women, and how women will pull together to help others.
I have to admit that I didn't always love Marissa. Maybe it's because I saw in her things that I don't like about myself, but she definitely got on my nerves in the beginning of the book. I found her to be very self-centered and at times almost arrogant; however, I like how the author developed her character. She was definitely flawed, and yet I found myself rooting for her. In so many ways, SWEET LIFE was really a coming-of-age story from Marissa (even though she was a woman in her early 40.) As a reader, I enjoyed seeing Marissa discover things about her relationships and her life in general that made her a better person. I was actually quite touched by this story, and it ended up warming my heart a great deal.
As a child, my family moved a lot so I could totally identify to the parts of the story about acclimating to a new environment and a new culture. While I haven't experienced a move quite as drastic as moving to Hawaii, I could understand Marissa's frustrations and feelings of being an outsider. I thought Ms. King did a wonderful job of showing the huge differences between living in Manhattan and living in Hawaii. In fact, I thought her descriptions of Hawaii and its people were perfect.
I think what I enjoyed most about SWEET LIFE were the overall messages in this story. After I finished this book, I just had to smile. This book showed the importance of family and friends as well as finding what makes you happy. I don't think I will ever tire of books that make me think about those themes. Of course, I also liked how Marissa discovered things about herself and realized what was truly important in her life.
My book club is all 30- and 40-somethings, so I think SWEET LIFE would be a great discussion book for my group. I think many women will relate to at least some aspects of the females in this novel. There is a reading guide available which further delves into the themes of marriage, family, trust, self awareness, and friendships. I also think hosting a meeting for this book would be so much fun. Since the story takes place in Hawaii, you could do an entire island-themed party. And since food is such a huge part of this story (there are even recipes included in the back of the book), you would have no problem coming up with some awesome treats!
SWEET LIFE is the first book that I've read by Ms. King, but it won't be my last. I already have TABLE MANNERS and can't wait to read it. Ms. King has a fantastic website that you really need to check out. She has a special recipe box section where you will find lots of delicious recipes and even recipe tips. She even has entertaining/hostess ideas, related food trivia, and guest author recipes. I think her website is a terrific resource for your next party or book club meeting.』

(Seems like the perfect book at first sight but...) 『When I first got this book I was in love, the recipes I tried were amazing, the illustrations mouth-watering, the step-by-step instructions almost fool-proof! And for the most part I still agree with what the other commentators wrote but unfortunately over time I found some mistakes here and there, some smaller, some larger, that disappoint me. How does the weight for the "pate sablee" add up to 650 gr? I mixed it, weighed it and it weighed 580 gr, which is in perfect accordance to the total weight of all the ingredients when you add them up on paper. The biggest disappointment is the orange cheesecake that looked so incredibly enticing in the photo and is, according to M. Roux, the best cheesecake he'd ever tasted: the amounts given for the filling don't add up - I ended up with so much filling that I could actually fill two molds. Moreover, the juice of four oranges equals a whole cup of juice, which is far too much for a cheesecake, and in the end the product tasted plain awful. That said, most other recipes I tried have been delicious, the strawberry tart, apple tart, puff pastry, choux pastry. I would still highly recommend it to anyone as it's a wonderful book to learn from but unfortunately, it's not the flawless book that Michel Roux claims it is...』
