(Fabulous music!)
(A Revelation: Perhaps the most important concert of them all.)
(You Are There!)
(Benny Goodman's legendary Carnegie Hall concert from 1938) I originally ordered this cd set from a well known electronics store. After listening to this cd set on itunes I returned it unopened. These cd's have a LOT of surface noise(crackling, popping and hissing)all over the music on every track, making it,for me,unlistenable.I bought a used 3 cd set of the same concert plus one more disc from a private seller on Amazon. This is the Avid Records 3 CD set. When Columbia Records remastered this set they stated they left all the surface noise on to capture more of the music. All they captured was irritating noise. The difference between these two CD sets is like night and day.The Columbia Records set,now being sold by Sony Music has terrible noise and distortion all over it;while the sound quality of the Avid set is SO MUCH BETTER.This Avid cd set can be downloaded from Itunes. The cd's are now out of print. If you like Benny Goodman you will love listening to the Avid set.Don't waste your good money on the Columbia/Sony set. This is swing music at it's absolute best! These recordings are wonderful and to lose the snap, crackle, pop would be to muffle music that on this recording is clear and gorgeous! I haven't stopped listening since I purchased these discs. Love them and I don't hear the crackling anymore. Worth every dime! Orginally, it was assumed that this concert went unrecorded (1938 was well in advance of tape machines). Then it was assumed that the 2nd half had been irretrievably lost. But when the latter half showed up in BG's closet, Columbia released an early 1950s LP of the event. Only now do I realize that the LP only hinted at the completeness and magnitude of the occasion.
BG brought legitimacy to jazz as an art form, without losing any spirit or swing, by bringing it to the stage of Carnegie Hall. Moreover, he showed how white and black musicians could make music together--a powerful metaphor for harmonious policy-making among the races. Finally, by putting equal emphasis on "chamber jazz"--the trio and quartet--he showed a nation fixated on big bands as their popular music that there was much more to the music than "In the Mood" and "Let's Dance."
But not until this complete version was I aware that Count Basie and Duke Ellington were both on hand, along with some of their star players--Hodges, Carney, Freddy Green, and Lester Young. And despite the sniping that is frequently aimed at Gene Krupa, he's a driving force who, moreover, puts a face on the music from the first to the last beat. Climax follows climax, with the dazzling virtuosity of Teddy Wilson along with Goodman and Hampton preceding a 12-minute thrilling finale on what is essentially a single scale! More than 20 years ahead of Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" and Coltrane's music, BG was demonstrating much the same thing.
The surface noise is a necessary trade-off, all too familiar to those of us who have used mixing programs in attempts to remove it. It can be muted and even removed--but only at the expense of critical frequencies in the music. In the last two years, Jasmine, a reliable Czech label, has come out with the same complete concert--perhaps with less hiss and more bass--but trust the Sony/Columbia engineers on this one. This 1938 recording doesn't come close to the label's incredible restoration of "Ellington at Newport 1956," but those 12 intervening years made a huge difference in terms of available technology. This concert marked the high point of big band jazz. The best musicians of the period, Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Benny, and many more went all out for this event. This recording captures all of the vibrations of that evening. It has the applause segments, some commentary by Benny himself, recorded some years later, the full range of each instrument and a real sense of being there. The price of all this is that some snaps and crackles from the original are not filtered out. The virtuosity of each musician comes through! This record is without any doubt groundbreaking musical material! There are many people who cry about the quality of the recording, fact is that if it wouldn't have been recorded at all we would not have anything like that anywhere, since Goodman's versions of "Sing Sing Sing", "One o' Clock Jump" and "I've got Rhythm" as well as "Let's Dance" from the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, are the best versions of theses songs ever recorded. Sound-wise it does have serious hissing, pops and cracks, since it was recorded on aluminum and acetate material (recorded without Goodman and the band even knowing) despite that it still swings and grooves beyond almost anything one might consider Swing-Music. For those who simply can not "tune out" the pops and cracks of an old recording should consider the "Complete Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert 1938" re-released in September 18, 2006 with MUCH less popping and cracking on JASMINE records - the draw back here is of course some sound information is lost as well, as it ALWAYS will be when trying to filter out a certain frequency, yet I do believe those who absolutely can't handle the recording noise will be much more satisfied with the 2006 re-release (also offered here on Amazon). For its historical value, musical power and virtuosity - absolutely 5 stars all the way! Goodman the king of swing rightfully earned tis title by paving the road with this record for many other bands who would come after him. J.S. In jazz, live recordings not only document an artist or group's sound in its purest form but, in rare cases, herald the arrival of a musical genre. That's the case with this invaluable, two-CD collection that captures clarinetist Benny Goodman's historic 1938 Carnegie Hall concert, which exemplified the so-called "swing era." Originally released in 1950, it contains rare commentary from Goodman and music from the entire event, which was a unique mix of formality and spontaneity. Goodman's perfect intonation and lyrical improvisation front the big band here, featuring the smooth solos of trumpeter Harry James, the percussive power of Gene Krupa--jumping the blues on "Don't Be That Way"--and the Fletcher Henderson- arranged "Sometimes I'm Happy" and "One O'Clock Jump." Another segment of the evening, called "Twenty Years of Jazz," takes Goodman to New Orleans with a lickety-split reading of "Sensation Rag" and "When My Baby Smiles at Me." A spirited jam session follows with Count Basie on the keys, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophonists Johnny Hodges, Lester Young, and Harry Carney, along with trumpeter Buck Clayton. Goodman hangs tough with the crew on a rollicking read of Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose." The spotlight turns to Goodman's color-line breaking small combos. His trio with Krupa and the elegant, fleet-fingered Teddy Wilson on piano delivers a harmonically delicious version of "Body&Soul" that would give Coleman Hawkins's version a run for its money. When vibraphonist Lionel Hampton gets into the mix and makes it a quartet, the standards "Avalon," "The Man I Love," and "I Got Rhythm," as well as "Stompin' at the Savoy," are transformed into timeless vehicles of improvisation. The big band returns with growling grandeur on Irving Berlin's optimistic "Blue Skies" and the British Isle balladry of "Loch Lomond," with the majestic vocals of Martha Tilton. One listen to Goodman and company's rockhouse romp on "Sing, Sing, Sing" will testify to the success of this event, which still reverberates today.--Eugene Holley Jr. Rerations < Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert >

(Great addition to a woderful series)
(Praise for this DVD) My twins love this (1 year olds) and best of all my 4 year old loves it as well! She loves going to church and being familiar with the praise and worship songs....we both love listening to the songs as adults as well. I have bought these DVD's many times as baby gifts for parents. They all say they are wonderful and they are as I have watched them. The DVD is for a gift, so I did not view it, but the merchandise came within just a few days, as advertised. Son asks for this one (Blue Praise Baby, please). We enjoy all of the series. Athough we do not even have cable or have any type of television reception we do play videos/dvds for our son. The tv is in our bedroom so is only on a an occassional basis. I like this series espcially for going to sleep or relaxing when teething or ill. We snuggle and I verbalize what he is seeing. He laughs and smiles, relaxes and goes to sleep. The music is soothing and we adults enjoy it too! My 11 month old just received this from her aunt and LOVES is. As soon as she hears the 1st song, she knows it's her DVD and will watch the entire 30 min. She reaches her hands out, smiles, dances and "sings" to the video. It's very engaging, and even my 3 year old likes it too! I'll definitely be buying this for baby gifts...these are some of my favorite songs too! This inaugural release in the Praise Baby Collection combines animated and real-life images with contemporary praise and worship songs to engage a baby's mind and spirit. Based on research that music enhances an infant's brain development, this softly sung collection of 10 arrangements--including hymns "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee"--is meant to lay a foundation for a child's lifelong faith journey, as well as stimulate tactile, cognitive, and spatial learning. A standout feature is the ability to hear a song in three versions; whether with a female lead vocal, with a child lead vocal, or as a soothing instrumental. Accompanying the tender melodies are gently paced scenes of colors, shapes, animals, and toddlers. In one, clouds slowly form letters and numbers; in another, soap bubbles become a tulip garden. Later, a circle morphs into a human face. There are no voiceovers or written words on the screen, though the message of God's love is clearly and beautifully communicated. (Ages 9 months to 3 years)--Lynn Gibson
Studies over the last 20 years have shown that music can have a dramatic positive influence on a baby's developmental process. As a result, there have been many products available that encourage the intellectual development of infants and toddlers. "The Praise Baby Collection: Music for Baby's Spirit and Mind" and the collection's first release, "Praises and Smiles," provides parents with the first developmentally appropriate CD, DVD and video series that creates a nurturing environment for an infant's spiritual and intellectual development. Combining popular praise and worship songs with colorful real world objects, "Praises and Smiles" will actively engage the baby's spirit and mind, stimulating early learning in the areas of tactile, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual development. (Old friends great music)
(Nice but can't compare to the Central Park Concert)
(still maturing, sweeter getting vintage) "Old Friends" is an effort greatly appreciated by devoted fans of the duo - Simon and Garfunkle as a whole is SO MUCH MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS. Thank you for sharing the gift of friendship and shared talents. Okay, I've had this DVD for about three months, and it still hasn't grown on me. Simon and Garfunkel have their moments on this DVD, but they are far and few between. Simon's insistence on pseudo-improvisation on classic songs leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and though he's a fabulous songwriter/musician/singer, his attempt at singing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" sealed the deal for me.
If you want classic Simon and Garfunkel, get the Concert in Central Park DVD. I have owned Concert in central park before this purchase. If you are Simon and Garfunkel fan you must have both. For those who are not familiar with them I would recommend Live on Stage. This concert captures the spirit and soul of their beautiful music. There are some very nice moments in this concert DVD (Kathy's Song, the Everley Brothers sequence, Sounds of Silence, American Tune, Slip Sliding Away, etc.) and, especially now in 2008, one is reminded of how timeless (and timely) Paul Simon's lyrics are. However, this whole concert seemed overly staged and forced compared to the Central Park Concert. Central Park was a phenomenon; an amazing, one-time, convergence of time, place, atmosphere, attitude, spirit and incredible, incredibly beautiful music. If you want to get both DVD's, great, but if you want definitive video evidence of S&G's greatness, Central Park will always be the one. Paul Simon wrote these songs years ago, and Art Garfunkel gave them beauty and form in his singing. At first that would seem to be it. We can just buy the original album.
But these artist continue to create these songs. As mature men, they bring a dimension to the songs that they could not do when they were younger.
It is like the songs turned about and helped to develop the songwriter and singer in turn. There is an integrity and beauty that is emerging.
They show us what the word artist means as a life's calling.

customer 's review ("Bette and Olivia Nearly Destroy Each Other In This!")
(Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte)
(Hush Sweet AND Sour Charlotte)
(dramatic and outstanding)
(Great) It was announced in December, 1963 that the two stars of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, would be reunited for "Hush, Hush...Sweet Charlotte". After the huge financial and critical success of "Baby Jane", studios were fawning all over themselves for a vehicle the would bring these two movie goddesses back together. Before "Baby Jane" no one wanted Davis and Crawford in their movies, as the film studios felt they did not appeal to the box office. Once Joan and Bette's careers were reignited again, Hollywood was knocking down their doors. "Hush, Hush..." was suppose to star the two, but because of ill health and Davis' harsh treatment of her on the set, Joan fell ill and was hospitalized. What a terrible loss the studio had, as well as us fans, as we never saw Joan as Miriam in the final film. It would have been so neat to see Joan, as Miriam, beating the crap out of Bette as Charlotte, as the complete opposite happened in "Baby Jane", where Bette's character was the antagonist and abuser. Olivia DeHavilland does, however, give a remarkable performance in this film as Miriam. Olivia detetested doing bitch roles, but both Bette and director Robert Aldrich persuaded her to do the film. What makes her character so evil is the subtext in which she uses in her portrayal: we, as the audience, at the beginning of the picture, believe that Miriam is such a kind-hearted, soft spoken woman who's best interest is her cousin Charlotte's welfare: we soon discover none of this is true as Olivia portrays one of the most evil, psychotic women ever on film. The rest of the cast is first rate, from Agnes Moorehead, who plays Charlotte's maid Velma, to Joseph Cotten, who plays an unscrupulous doctor, out to destroy Charlotte. "Hush, Hush...Sweet Charlotte" is the best film in the "Baby Jane" genre. There were many 1960's films that tried to duplicate the success of "Baby Jane", like "Lady in a Cage", Straight-Jacket", and "Dead Ringer", but "Hush, Hush" comes a close second to being the sequel that it was suppose to be to the mother film. According to Bette Davis, she wasn't overly fond of the film, but fans of these hag-films, like me, love these vehicles: nothing like watching former movie queens, looking like hell, and tearing up the scenery! This film also received a whopping 7 Academy Award nominations, but winning none: at the time the film set a record for a horror film receiving the most Oscar nods. This record would be broken in 1991 by "The Silence of the Lambs". There is also another DVD release of "Hush, Hush" that is available, but if you already have the 2005 DVD release of the film I would suggest in passing on it. There is a neat documentary on the film, but it doesn't really offer anything that we ardent Bette and Joan fans don't already know. Contrary to public belief there are no Joan Crawford deleted scenes on the 2008 DVD release. Rumor has it 20th Century Fox destroyed the scenes that Joan did prior to leaving the film. In the second DVD there are still pictures of Joan in character as Miriam, but that is about it. Great movie! Birthday gift to my 39 yr old daughter. One of her favorite movies!! Thanks so much. Carol One gets the impression after watching this that it's sooo important that an actress even today is able to pick the roles best suited for them. After years of playing up her glamorous qualities in classics such as Dark Victory (Restored and Remastered Edition),Now, Voyager (Keepcase) and All About Eve (Two-Disc Special Edition) this movie, made while she was middle aged shows a very different side of Bette Davis. She stars as Charlotte Hollis,a woman who you ultimately end up feeling very sorry for even after you see how isolated and weird she is. In keeping with her nack with melodrama this story is complex and intricate. Charlotte, accused of the murder of her already married beau while she was a young woman had withdrawn into her own twisted world of broken memories until in 1964 when her coniving cousin (Olivia DeHaviland) shows up to take Charlotte to the looney bin so the city can bulldoze her old family house down. The twisted story that developed after that is just something you have to see to believe;the errie coolness of DeHaviland as she conspires to drive her cousin into pure delerium with...pretty much whatever it took up against the complete unhinged moodiness and harshness of the broken Charlotte. Of course in the end Charllote desintigrates into complete Blanche DeBouis style madness, even resulting in a very linear hallucination illustrating her own take on the old crime before,in the end......well your not certain whether to be relieved or not. At a time where movies generally had a distinctly sad or happy ending, usually the latter being preffered this one has that awkward, uncertain conclusion that is often used in more modern era when films seem to come to a conclusion rather then have a distinct emotional quality to the ending. This movie from beginning to end will tend to make the mind wonder rather then have...well more then a split second emotional reaction. And in many ways it's very much a harbinger of what was to come in cinema during the 60's and after;that genre of horror/mystery that is still the name of the game even to present day. The era of old "talkie" Hollywood was officially coming to an end and even at a more advanced age Bette Davis was as on the cutting edge of this new emmerging style of film making as she had in the one that it had replaced. Now THAT is true longjevity. Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte is a powerful film that proves Bette Davis was still at the peak of her form even in the mid 1960s. The acting is very convincing and the story line moves along very well. The cinematography and choreography shine in particular and I really like that the film was shot in black and white--it adds to the horror effects in this film. Yes, it is campy at times but overall it's not a picture that you'll forget anytime soon and it left me quite impressed with the cast and crew.
We first meet Charlotte Hollis, an aging spinster living alone in a deteriorating Southern mansion with her only real friend, her servant Velma Cruther (Agnes Moorehead). Hollis's father loathed the one man Charlotte ever really loved; it seems that this young man John Mayhew (Bruce Dern) was married at the time he wanted to elope with Charlotte! Charlotte has never forgotten John who gets killed by an unknown ax murderer the night she was to run away from him; and although people think Charlotte may have killed John herself there's no evidence so Charlotte never did any time in prison. Instead, Charlotte is essentially condemned to living her life alone in her home; and she also manages to delude herself into thinking that she may well have killed John herself.
Things change pretty fast when Charlotte is about to be evicted from her Southern home because the county needs to build a bridge. Her cousin (and only next of kin) Miriam Deering (Olivia de Havilland) shows up with a mutual acquaintance Dr. Drew Bayliss (Joseph Cotten). Charlotte and her servant Velma don't quite see eye to eye with Drew and Miriam--they want Charlotte to peacefully leave the mansion while Charlotte and Velma want Charlotte to stay.
There's also a tug of war over money--it seems Velma wants some if Charlotte dies or becomes incapacitated while we slowly begin to suspect that others may want the same money. Could the others be Miriam and Drew? Could it be Jewel Mayhew, who could be seeking revenge against Charlotte if she thought that Charlotte did in fact kill her late husband John? Watch the movie and find out! The suspense at some moments is very high and even though the movie gets somewhat creepy at times the performances are remarkably strong and memorable.
The DVD comes with a good number of extras. We get a retrospective look back at director Robert Aldrich and the general production of the film; and we learn that this was supposed to be a type of "sequel" that re-paired Bette Davis with Joan Crawford after they co-starred in Whatever Happened To Baby Jane? There is an extra with Bruce Dern who remembers working with Bette; and there is another short film narrated by Joseph Cotten himself.
I give Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte high marks for being quality film that showcases wonderful performances by Bette Davis, Joseph Cotten, Olivia de Havilland, Agnes Moorehead and Mary Astor in her final film role as Jewel Mayhew. This is a "must-have" DVD for fans of these actors and a certain grand type of Hollywood motion picture that you just don't quite see anymore.
this came right on time and I was very happy with the service I got. Poor Charlotte Hollis. She's been shunned by the community for decades, ever since the fateful night in 1927 when her lover was hacked apart with an axe. Her antebellum southern mansion is slated for the bulldozer, as it stands in the way of highway construction. Charlotte's only hope lies in her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland), coming down from up north to help settle things. Miriam, however, has other designs. Together with her boyfriend Drew (Joseph Cotten), she embarks on a scheme to systematically drive Charlotte out of her mind (not a great leap) and get her mitts on the family fortune. From there, things only get more complicated.Charlotteputs the "gothic" in southern gothic, as a great showcase for completely bizarre, overwrought, and out-of-control performances from all involved. Agnes Moorehead plays Charlotte's loyal, disheveled housekeeper to the hilt, with an odd inflection that calls to mind Amos and Andy more than southern gentility. As the drunken, conniving Dr. Drew, Cotten's accent is indeterminate at times, and seems to come and go. As great as the supporting players are, though, the crown goes to Bette Davis as the shrieking Charlotte, a portrait of isolation and decay stuck in a world of tragic delusions inside her crumbling mansion. De Havilland is a close second as the scheming Miriam; the scene where she slaps the holy snot out of a hysterical Charlotte is itself worth the price of admission. Mary Astor (in her last role) and Cecil Kellaway (as a kindly Lloyd's of London adjuster) put in the only performances with any restraint, acting as counterweights for the rest of the cast. Besides, you'll never get another chance to see Joseph Cotten playing the harpsichord and singing, or caked in mud and lily pads! With Robert Aldrich's claustrophobic direction,Charlotteis as Southern as a field of kudzu, and as subdued as a train wreck.--Jerry Renshaw Rerations < Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte [VHS] >

(Don't expect The Wife of Bath)
(A Treasure of a Film)
(Fine Film - Glorious Remastering - But Needed a Single CD)
(England - land of hope and glory) This strange, interesting, mysterious, and some times confusing movie was filmed by Michael Powell whose cinema photography is uniquely pleasing to the eye. You can even shut the sound off and watch the light, shadow, form, line, etc. With the sound on you will hear music and sound highly appropriate to each scene....especially the dialogue. The acting, casting, actors, etc....fantastic. To bad we in American rarely make a great movie....we just keep turning out crap. This is another of those movies I caught on late-night TV, and eventually ended up buying.
In some ways it kind of reminds me of Rudyard Kipling's "Kim". There's not really a plot, as such, there's just people who come together for a while, do their thing, and part.
A couple of things make it clear this is a WWII propaganda film made to encourage wartime Anglo-American friendship and understanding: Sgt Johnson impresses the locals with his knowledge of lumber, and then goes on to slam isolationists who oppose the Lend Lease program. At the end he is completely overwhelmed by the glory of Canterbury Cathedral, but remains proud of his small rural church back in Oregon.
What else to say. Well, Kent is laid out in all its glory. I lived in the UK for a couple of years in the mid 1980's, and got to travel all over, including to Kent. Seeing the hop gardens, drying sheds, and the manicured British countryside brought a nostalgic lump to my throat.
Great movie. I think I'm going to go on a Criterion Collection WWII movie buying spree. A CANTERBURY TALE is an enchanting film from British filmmakers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The film takes place during the height of World War II and originally served as a propaganda tool for the British Ministry of Information. But underneath the exterior of the film, there is a deep underlying meaning of revisiting and taking a pilgrimage to the past in order to understand the present.
Powell and Pressburger invoke British romanticism and spiritualism that is clearly shown with the shadow and light essence of the film that is exceptionally conveyed and characterized through the cinematography. Undeniably, the beautiful English countryside and village landscape offers a quaintness and familiarity that echoes home in terms of American versus British identity, which is seen and heard in the conversations between American G.I., Sgt. Bob Johnson (John Sweet) and British soldier, Sgt. Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price) as they speak atop a grassy hill as well as throughout the film. Also, there is a complex subplot that involves Alison Smith (Sheila Sim) who served in the British Women's Land Army and the town's Magistrate, Thomas Colpepper (Eric Portman), which is ambiguously portrayed.
Overall, THE CANTERBURY TALE is indeed on the list of thought-provoking films. It subtly recants Chaucer's original tale, but it is an original Powell and Pressburger production that that resonates the history of England. This is definitely a film that should be viewed more than once. Criterion here offers a remarkable film; quiet and unprentenious and unspoiled by heavy plot machinations or ersatz pumping-up of story. The battle of the village boys remains the high point, but the entire film resonates the director's love for his native Kent countryside. The amateur American actor gives the interplay among the characters a decided contrast and conveniently served to mark the differences between the American and the British. The cinematography was as natural as ever with this team's films. Criterion offers this as a set of two CDs. Good as the extras are, they end up raising the price to the point I fear very few people will give this film a look. Too bad. 39.99 is is a pretty steep toll for a film most Americans will be taking a chance on. But the quality is certainly first class, so those buying the CD will have as fine a version as possible. I am so glad this extraordinary film has been remastered, returned to its original edit, and preserved on DVD. I love some of Michael Powell's films -- some I'm lukewarm about -- I love this one. A CANTERBURY TALE is quite lovely. It's not quite perfect -- don't be put off by the little "glue man" mystery -- it's a device -- and it works in the overall plot. These actors are superb, and the film is a moving tribute to England and her people during the darkest days of WW II. I cannot say enough about how beautiful it is. Be sure to watch the special features and read the essays in the booklet that all make up this very special DVD package. Don't miss this one.
A side note from a native Atlantan -- this is the film which Margaret Mitchell was crossing Peachtree Street to see when struck by a hit-and-run driver. One of the most beloved of all British films,A Canterbury Talemarks yet another occasion to celebrate the Criterion Collection's growing DVD legacy of Powell and Pressburger classics. Originally conceived as good-natured propaganda to support the British-American alliance of World War II, the film became something truly special in the hands of the Archers (a.k.a. writer/director/producers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger). Taking its literary cues from Chaucer's titular classic, it begins with a prologue that harkens back to Chaucer's time before match-cutting to present-day August of 1943, with the night-time arrival of U.S. Army Sgt. Bob Johnson (played with folksy charm by John Sweet, an actual American GI) on the shadowy platform of Canterbury station in the magically rural county of Kent (where Powell was born and raised). He is soon joined by two fellow train passengers: Alison Smith (Sheila Sim), a brashly independent recruit in the British Woman's Land Army; and Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price), a sergeant in the royal Army, and before long they're tracking clues to find "the glue man," a mysterious figure who's been pouring "the sticky stuff" on unsuspecting women as the midnight hour approaches. Their investigation leads to Thomas Colpeper (Eric Portman), a village squire whose local slide-shows celebrate life in an idyllic rural England threatened by wartime change. As Graham Fuller writes in an observant mini-essay that accompanies this DVD, is this a whodunit? Historical documentary? War film? Rustic comedy? It's all these and so much more: As photographed in glorious black and white by Erwin Hiller (faithfully preserved by one of Criterion's finest high-definition digital transfers),A Canterbury Talehas an elusive, magical quality that encompasses its trio of Canterbury "pilgrims" and translates into a an elusive, spiritually uplifting sense of elation that has made it an all-time favorite among film lovers around the world.--Jeff ShannonOn the DVDs In addition to one of the most crisply detailed black-and-white transfers you're ever likely to see, disc 1 ofA Canterbury Taleincludes a feature-length commentary by film historian Ian Christie, author of the now out-of-printArrows of Desire(the definitive study of Powell&Pressburger films) and a foremost authority on British films in general. Disc 2 is loaded withCanterburyextras, including a pleasant reminiscence by actress Sheila Sim; a documentary about John Sweet (who is seen visiting Canterbury in 2000, for the first time since filmingA Canterbury Talein 1943); and a charming new documentary that follows contemporary Canterbury "pilgrims" as they revisit locations used in the film. There's also "Listen to Britain," a seven-minute video-installation piece inspired byA Canterbury Taleby artist Victor Burgin (and programmed to loop from start to finish and back again, as it did in museums); and the original "Listen to Britain," by Humphrey Jennings--a classic wartime documentary from the classic era of British non-fiction film that celebrates the sights, and especially the sounds, of rural England in the early 1940s. All in all, these are excellent features that placeA Canterbury Talein evocative historical context.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Canterbury Tale [VHS] >

Someone is trying to drive charlotte out of her mind in this well-made thriller. Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 09/11/2007 Starring: Joseph Cotton Bette Davis Run time: 133 minutes Rating: Nr Poor Charlotte Hollis. With Robert Aldrich's claustrophobic direction,Charlotteis as Southern as a field of kudzu, and as subdued as a train wreck.--Jerry Renshaw Rerations < Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte >

(Fun movie with a great story)
(Shades of Grey)
(Never read the book.)
(Nice companion piece) I loved this movie. The story was engaging and fun. The narration helped move it along and likely was filling in the blanks from the book. I love that it had a lesson or two but done in an entertaining way. I really liked the serendipity of it all at the very end, like those movies that complete a circle. Despereaux is a very cute 'gentleman'. The Blu-ray version is the one I own. The detail of his fur and nose are amazing. A big bowl of stove-popped popcorn, a soda, and this movie make a very happy Saturday evening. I love computer generated movies and this one looks great. The story line has an excellent message for young and young at heart alike. It is a must see for all families. This is a fairy tale that does not insult the adults who may be happening to watch as well. There are lessons to learn all around. Compared to the highly processed fare characteristic of this genre, I can recommend this for all ages. I for one did not read the book. Actually, I barely heard of the movie, my wife picked this up for us to watch with the kids before we watched our movie. It turned out to be an excellent animated movie with emphasis on movie. What I appreciated about Tale of Despereaux was the fact it had a story to tell and it was done very well. This is not just another animated fluff movie full of one liners and stupidity. It has enough action to keep the young's attention, of course what's an animated movie without a few talking animals and a magical character who goes from assistant chef to....... well I won't let that out of the bag. I also appreciate the fact this movie takes the time to develope the main characters, you understand the reason they do what they do, it makes you feel for the characters, whether you like them or not, your opinion could even change on certain characters as the movie unfolds, and no loose ends are left hanging at the end of the movie. The plot is not predictable as many of the Hollywood carbon copy dribble is today. I found Tale of Despereaux an entertaining movie that kept my attention as a 40 something, my grandson's, who is 4, and feel it can do the same for all ages. I personally hope to see more animation coming out that has this type of depth to the story. As some one already mentioned this is an excellent family movie and done cleverly so. For instance, one place in the movie a character sneaks a knife out of the kitchen, as an adult you know full well what is going on but the knife is never shown again. Another place it is incenuated one character will eat the other but they go through a door which closes behind them. And, whether you understand fully what happens there is really irrelevant because justice was served and a bad guy is out of the movie, which was the point. What I'm trying to say is children will still understand the story as it's done here without graffic deeds being shown.
When you make a movie based on a book it's inevitable that comparisons will be made and people will be interested to know if it follows the book line by line but it should stop there. Try to judge the movie based on it's own stand alone merits. It's entertainment, not a history lesson. So I hope people will enjoy this fine film and not rip on it because they feel the maker violated some sacred writing. The Tale of Despereaux looks very nice, the animation is well done. If you're a fan of the award winning book, then it might be worth watching but be warned, the film is not nearly as good as the book (isn't that always the case?) There are several different elements and characters introduced in the film that are not in the original story. I felt the changes in the story diminished it greatly but the main message is still present although "softened" for some of the younger viewers (Miggery Sow's physical abuse and consequent hearing loss is left out, for example) Over all I'd say it's worth a viewing for "Family Movie Night" Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 04/07/2009 Run time: 94 minutes Rating: G The Tale of Despereauxlooks a little likeShrek. The storytelling and animation draw on everything fromRatatouilleand classic fairytales to Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift,Indiana Jones, and, in its action sequences, evenBourneandBond. But this movie stands on its own; too dark and violent for very young children, perhaps, but for the most part it’s exciting and funny, and it delivers a message about bravery and forgiveness that is relevant to us all. Voiced by Matthew Broderick, the title character is a little guy, even by mouse standards, with enormous ears and an imagination to match; much to the dismay of his elders, he "never cowers, won’t scurry, and refuses to be taught to be scared" (he’d much rather read a book than eat it, a pursuit that fills his head with visions of valiant knights, damsels in distress, and a life defined by "courage, honor, and decency"). That leads to his being banished from Mouseworld to the realm of the rats, where, it is presumed, he will be eaten. But no. Ratworld--a dark, chaotic, genuinely scary place--happens to be the current residence of one Roscuro (Dustin Hoffman), a peaceful sort whose shenanigans in the human world have accidentally led to the death of the Queen, the imprisonment of the Princess (Emma Watson), and, worst of all, the banning of Soup Day (no small deal) and the end of soup itself! Roscuro and Despereaux join forces, inadvertently helped out by a homely but soft-hearted farm girl named Miggery Sow (Tracey Ullman), and, well, you can imagine how it all turns out. Directors Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen and scriptwriter Gary Ross (adapting Kate DiCamillo’s book) have concocted some vivid and interesting worlds for their film; the look is unusual, often washed out, muted, and bathed in hazy light; and the voice acting is excellent (others include William H. Macy, Kevin Kline, Stanley Tucci, and Frank Langella). All in all, despite a conclusion that’s confusing even while it’s predictable,The Tale of Despereauxis a worthy addition to the crowded animation field. --Sam Graham Printable Coloring Page, Map&Despereaux ears fromThe Tale of Despereaux(Click for full size) Coloring Page | Maze | Despereaux Ears

(LOVE them!!!)
(My daughter loves these)
(My Kids love them) These have replaced Goldfish crackers in our house simply because they are organic and contain no partially hydrogenated fats. The 1.5 ounce box is a VERY generous serving, it's usually a good light snack for both of my kids to share a box. I didn't feel bad giving my kiddos these tasty crackers. Seemed similar in taste to reduced fat cheezits -- but much cuter! My kids and I LOVE - can't say it enough - LOVE this product. They are nice and crispy with a light touch of the cheese flavor and definitely not too salty! And for me - with these crackers being Organic and so healthy - well I just cannot say enough good things! Great size for the box too - not too little and not too much and very easy with which to travel. And so do all her friends (she's two). They seem to prefer them to Goldfish. My daughter and son love these and I like the taste too. They taste a bit light but I think it's better for my kids. I tried Annie's home grown bunnies but I think they are too salty and oilier tasting than these are. Getting a handle on kids' health just got easier with our single-serve handled boxes. Perfect for school lunches, picnics, and birthday parties--anywhere kids need a nutritious snack. Healthy Handfuls children's snacks are loaded with the great taste kids love, but without any of the trans fats, perservatives, and artificial colors. (Love it)
(LaCoste Parfum purchase)
(Lovely) Perfumes never smell good on me, but I get compliments galore when I wear Lacoste Pour Femme. It doesn't have that "heavy", "overpowering" smell that so many of today's perfumes have. It's classified as a "floral", yet I wouldn't call it that at all. Most florals are sweet and give me a headache. It's neither spicey, nor flowery, nor powdery. It's very clean smelling and light, yet has a very warm and romantic side. This perfume has a scent unlike any other I know. It's sexy, yet extremely understated. It's delicate enough to wear during the day or in the office and alluring enough to wear at night. The only complaint I would have is that it doesn't last as long as stronger perfumes. However, the beauty of this perfume far outways the need for a second application in the evening. My husband loves when I wear it and I can never find another scent I like when I run out. Amazon has the best price I've found and it always arrives within days...even with the great free shipping! Try it and enjoy the many times you'll hear "You smell WONDERFUL! What are you wearing!" I love this perfume and was very disappointed when I could not find it in my favorite department store. I was very happy to be able to find it on Amazon. This is not the first time I use this perfume, but it is the first time I bought it from amazon. As far as the perfume is concerened I love it and I am very picky when it comes to perfumes! I thought the price was great, I shopped around before making the purchase.... I love shopping on amazon My order was shipped in just a few days. Very fast service. I will use Amazon.com again for future purchases. This perfume is absolutely lovely. For me, it's perfect. It's feminine without being overly flowery and doesn't have that heavy spicy smell that some fragrances have. I am also quite picky when it comes to perfumes and like a smell that is light but not too sweet. Pour Femme is soft yet sophisticated. I can't imagine wearing anything else. (Very good honey)
(Tastes good, but is it really raw and unfiltered?)
(My new favorite!!!)
(A Great Breakfast Honey) I love this honey mainly for the packaging. The bottle is super easy to use -it doesn't leak&the material is easier to squeeze compared to other containers. You can even use the suction from squeezing it to pull the last drip of honey back into the nozzle. Perfect for keeping your bottle from getting sticky with unwanted/unseen drips.
The taste is nice -It's perfect in my hot tea and it's also good plainly spread on toast.
I see another commenter complained that they had a problem with it crystallizing, but the bottle description explains that this may happen due to the raw&unfiltered nature of the honey. The bottle also tells how you can easily reliquify by heating in a warm water bath.
I highly recommend this honey! This honey is very good, but I had a problem with the top. I had to finally cut the tip off with a scissors, to be able to squeeze out the honey! Now, I am using that same top on the new bottles, which helps a lot. The honey, itself, has a very nice aroma and flavor. This honey has a nice taste. But despite what the label says, I don't believe it is either raw or unfiltered. It has the clarity and consistency of garden variety honey found at any grocery chain.
The plastic bottles do not seal adequately for shipping -- one of the 4 bottles in my shipment was lost due to leakage. I've been trying several different types of raw honey over the past few months, and this one is now my favorite. I love that although it is raw and unfiltered - it still has the consistency of regular honey, so it is very versatile. There is also a hint of a spice flavor like cinnamon that makes it even yummier. It is the one I keep going back to for almost everything. Susan This Ambrosia honey has a mild spicy sweet taste that reminds me of cinnamon sugar. I've tried it with hot biscuits and butter and think it would be great in oatmeal or with french toast. A perfect compliment to the breakfast table and the price is incredible (cheaper than the local honey's available) along with being an American made product. (My Brother's Birthday)
(Webkinz Bullfrog) Each Webkinz is cuter than its predecessor. They have made a wonderful "bribe" to keep the grandaughter bringing all those "A's" home from school. She loves playing on the computer with these adorable animals. I bought this Webkiz to go along with the smaller one for my Grandson's birthday. He loved the pair together. Let me start by saying: I could not care less about the internet bit. Tossed out the web link and registration number as soon as I disconnected it from the frog's leg.
It's a cute, soft, speckled frog with possibly the most expressive eyes of the entire webkins line. Certainly it's true out of the ones I've seen so far.
Want a frog? Taa-daa - he's a cute one to boot.
Note: median marks for "durability" and "education" because my daughter hasn't seen him yet - neither has been tested. I bought Webkins Bullfrog. I bought it for my brother his birthday. He loved it. I recommend it because any child would love it if he/she loves computers and/or stuffed animals. You will be happy with your purchase. I purchased this toy for my 7 year old daughter who loves to play on-line with her webkinz. I try to get her the Pet of The Month so that she can take advantage of the special prizes they offer. Once we get the pets, she adopts them on-line and then the physical toy joins countless others in her closet, on her bed, in her toy bins. All-in-all, a quality product that offers lots of fun for pre-teens. I even get on the website and play some of the games :) Discover a virtual world with Webkinz pets. Webkinz animals come with a special Internet code so your child can interact with it online. The code lets you enter Webkinz World and bring your pet to life. Pet owners can name it, make it a home and even play games. Not recommended for children under 3.Minimum Supported Browsers: Windows - Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 7.2, Firefox 1.0, AOL Explorer 1.5. customer 's review (Everyone loves Bumblebee!)
(not the best early transformer)
(This is a "look only" kind of toy)
(Bumblebee Transformer DON"T WASTE YOUR $$$$, it's crap!!)
(Falls apart easily) I've collected pretty much the entire catalogue of Transformers from the 2007 hit movie, and there are some out there that are better. However, what I like about this incarnation of Bumblebee is that it is relatively easy to transform into robot form. Plus, the robot form looks very cool. Going back into automobile form can prove to be challenging, though after a few tries it should become second nature. The biggest drawback are the arm insignias that fall off way too easily. Most smaller children will lose these quite easily. I'm not really quite sure what Bumblebee's weapon is supposed to be, either. Finally, beware price gouging. I believe this item can still be found on the Hasbro website for around $10 plus shipping. This was my second transformer. It was extremely discouraging to transform it at first. Please, if you're going to get this, get it as your fifth transformer or later. If you want him, get him, but wait until you're experienced. Transformers Movie Deluxe Class Bumblebee 2008 Camaro I did not realize how fragile this toy was. It's made of plastic and fell apart on Christmas morning!! I have to assume this is an adult collector item and is not a toy. I have to wonder though; "Why would anyone want to collect something so cheaply made?" A real disappointment. I was under the impression that the price meant better quaility and durablilty, but with this product that was untrue. The simaliar bumblebee transformer was at WalMart for $10.00 that was the same quality and durability. My son recieved this toy on Christmas day, it is now the 28th of December and the head has already fallen of 5 times, the door has come off twice. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. THIS PRODUCT SUCKS!!!! I wish I could get my money back for this piece of CRAP!! This transformer doesn't seem to hold up very well. Parts fall off easily and are hard to get back on, especially for little hands. Not very impressed. Bumblebee could have cared less about his appearance. As long as his alternate mode kept him hidden, and protected his plasma cannon from the weather, he was content. But now, on Earth, he has found friendship for the first time in as long as he can remember, in the person of Sam Witwicky. At Sams urging, he scans a sweet new vehicle form. Now, hes still ready to fight to the end against the deceptions, but he sure hopes nothing too bad happens to his paint job. Convert this AUTOBOT figure from menacing robot mode to Camaro concept vehicle mode and back again. It features a cannon that converts to a blade in robot mode. This is one awesome figure for your collection. Rerations < Transformers Movie Deluxe Class Bumblebee 2008 Camaro >

(Not like the other ones...)
(Best)
(Tool puzzle) I'm in love with Melissa and Doug products! This is a great beginner puzzle. The pieces are large/chunky enough to fit in your child's hand like a real tool so they can "fix" things when they aren't using them as puzzle pieces. My 2 year old niece has a father who is very handy around the house so getting a puzzle with tools was a great idea. The parents are high on "girl power" so there is a non-sexist attitude about appropriate puzzles for their daughter. Dad is very interactive with his daughter when they do this puzzle together. My son has six or seven of the Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles and we love them. However, the tool puzzle that we received is NOT hand painted as described, and like all of the other ones that we have. Instead, the pieces have sticker pictures on them and several of them are already peeling off at the edges. (We got this today.) Durability aside this is a good product and I recommend it. These are the best puzzles ever. I got them for my nephew and grandson for Christmas and they love them. Our son is 2 and loves this puzzle. He's had it for about a month now, and enjoys putting the puzzle pieces into their correct slots, as well as using the tools. He tries to "fix" things around the house. It's very cute. He also has the Home Depot tool bench and tools set, so he's all about construction and destruction! The perfect rainy-day activity, this hand-painted, playfully styled Tools Puzzle is like nothing you've seen before. The thick, chunky wooden puzzle pieces fit neatly into their spots on the colorful board and also stand up for additional pretend play. Puzzle contains full-color images beneath each piece. (GREAT!)
(Love this book!)
(Just what I was looking for...)
(Excellent crepe overview) My kids are usually finicky and they are going crazy over these crepes. Easy to make and delicious. They do freeze well too - the instructions for storing are helpful and accurate. I bought this for my daughter for Christmas along with a crepe maker. We've used it THREE times since Christmas...three different recipes in three days and each has been DELICIOUS! Great pictures...wonderful recipes and tips! I originally found this book at a library, but after checking it out over and over again -as I love it, I checked on Amazon and it was here!! Love it! It has such a wonderful variety of crepes, using different flours etc., sweet and savory, and so many tips and ideas. I share this book title with everyone at my cooking shows. Definitely worth the price and then some! I took a crepe making class just to learn the technique and take the fear out of crepe making. While I took away from that class a few recipes, none were interesting enough to make at home. This book is wonderful--what closed the deal on purchasing it was when I saw that it included a recipe for blue corn crepes. While vacationing in Santa Fe, I fell in love with their blue corn pancake/muffin mix. I can't wait to make the blue corn crepes with the blue corn mix I brought back to Houston. The recipes in this book are exactly what I was looking for--diverse and simple to follow. I opened the book, and made excellent crepes right away, within minutes. Can't do much better than that! Foodies may declare crêpes "in" or "out," but they are a welcome treat for most of us. Lou Seibert Pappas explains that "crêpe" is the French word for pancake, and that the dish originated in Brittany, in northwestern France. Until about 100 years ago, all crêpes were made from buckwheat flour. Pappas departs from that tradition by providing 15 recipes for different kinds of crêpes. Eleven are savory, including ones made with whole wheat flour, with minced herbs, and with chickpea flour, while four are sweetened to use in making desserts. Photos accompanying Pappas's meticulous directions illustrate how to turn out light, delicate crêpes and how to fold them around fillings in 11 ways. She also explains what to do about problems such as small holes or cracking edges.Crêpesalso offers novel ways of serving the pancakes, such as the Party Stack with Pesto Fillings; Salad Basket Crêpes with Grapes, Blue Cheese, and Hazelnuts; and Chicken, Corn, and Red Pepper Crêpes. In addition, you will find Wild Mushroom Crêpes and other classics. Cannelloni and Cheese Blintzes are reminders that crêpes are more than a French favorite.--Dana Jacobi Ever-popular in France, delicate and delicious crêpes are once again basking in the international culinary spotlight. This gorgeously illustrated cookbook features more than 40 recipes for sweet and savory crêpes, all sure to delight friends and family alike. (Not as good as his other books)
(Disappointed)
(Typical Tony Sweet - Excellent, totally out of the box ideas.)
(Loaded with techniques) I have bought all of Tony Sweets books, videos etc and have loved each of them. I have also taken some classes of his at Better Photo. This book has motivated me to a new height in photography. One reason being that when taking pictures in the past, I could never quite get the feel I would have liked in certain situations. This book is filled with ideas and examples of what I have been looking for. It is very motivating to see picture examples in which Tony takes a somewhat ordinary picture and then turns them into masterpieces with his creative techniques. I would recommend this book (and frankly his other books as well) as part of your permanent library. I have three of Tony Sweet's other books + two of his videos, and I have learned so much from them, especially the Fine Art Nature Photography book of 2002.
Sweet's previous books emphasized on what to do when planning and taking the picture, and at this he's a master. Also, even though he uses a Nikon and I use a Canon, the techniques were not camera-specific, and I found them very useful.
This book, however, emphasizes what he does post-production. That is, once he's taken a picture, he uses various Photoshop plug-ins and other software programs to modify the picture. Okay, this type of information is generally useful, but there are other sources that do it much better. Also, it lends itself well to video teaching more than reading.
Sweet's presentation emphasizes programs that the average user isn't likely to have (stuff in addition to Photoshop), and to buy them all would cost probably close to $1,000. Unfortunately, his explanation of why he used a particular technique isn't rich enough that I can then duplicate it using Photoshop.
Sweet is a master at taking pictures, and his previous books about how to do so have invaluable tips. He is very good at post-production, but his methods are somewhat idiosyncratic, and it's not clear how much one learns from them. I found this book full of pretty pictures but containing nothing that would inspire me to new heights as far as my photography and my use of photoshop. I have all Tony Sweet's book and this one is excellent like the others. Tony presents clean and easy to understand examples and how to instructions for converting your nature photograph into a work of art. Fine Art Digital Nature Photography by Tony Sweet is loaded with beautiful photographs and Tony's instruction on how each was created, either by in-camera processing, post processing software or time of capture techniques, many of which are new to me. This book is another outstanding effort, in line with his other publications and DVD's and is highly recommended. I am anxious to try out the ideas and instructions this book provides. Digital cameras and software have revolutionized the world of photography. With seemingly endless products available, photographers are challenged to find what will work best for their individual needs. Renowned photographer Tony Sweet guides readers through numerous lessons, from performing camera "swipes" and creating abstract images to applying filters and transforming infrared images--all illustrated with his stunning nature photographs. Readers will learn how to use a variety of plug-ins, filters, exposure elements, adjustment layers, film emulation software and more. Rerations < Fine Art Digital Nature Photography >

(My Most Favorite Book of All Time!)
(Lovely)
(The Playful Poems of Hafiz)
(The Subject Tonight Is Love by Hafiz) Hafiz writes with passion and sweetness. His spirituality and deep love of God pours out of him and into each line. I'm hooked on Hafiz! I will have to get everything he has written! "The Subject Tonight Is Love" never ceases to bring tears of joy to my eyes every time I read it. I share Hafiz and this particular volume with my friends often, to introduce them to Hafiz. Hafiz has also influence my own poetry. Fall in love through Hafiz with the Divine over and over! By Donna P. Savage, Author of The Man and The Shark: A Modern Day Fable of Awakening and Rebirth This was a great buy! I loved the poems that the translator had picked out for this edition and they were all very well translated and not like some other really horrible translations that I've read of persian poetry. I gave it as a gift to one of my friends and now she can't get enough of Hafiz. The poet Hafiz provides short poems that I read to my wife as we prepare to sleep. There is tenderness (The Woman I Love), joy (We Keep Each Other Happy), and humor (The Vegetables). Some are thought-provoking (Some Angels Grumble). I find that I am still seeking the meaning in others. This small wonderful book stirs the contemplative heart. The poems are not more than a page long. I use them for my evening prayer. Each one is a golden nugget of inspiration. I highly recommend this book...five stars. To Persians, the fourteenth-century poems of Hafiz are not classical literature from a remote past, but cherished love, wisdom, and humor from a dear and intimate friend. Perhaps, more than any other Persian poet, it is Hafiz who most fully accesses the mystical, healing dimensions of poetry. Daniel Ladinsky has made it his life's work to create modern, inspired translations of the world's most profound spiritual poetry. Through Ladinsky's translations, Hafiz's voice comes alive across the centuries singing his message of love. Rerations < The Subject Tonight Is Love: Sixty Wild and Sweet Poems of Hafiz >

SHATILA FOOD PRODUCTS
customer 's review (Great!Great!)
(Best service and quality I have seen!)
(Best around) The order came fast, the taste is great, the packaging is wonderful !Now I think it will make a perfect gift too! I was looking for a traditional treat for a family event and I was very impressed by the quality of the food and the service from Shatila. The pastries were very fresh and delivered quickly with no dramatic shipping mark-up. They are very reasonably priced and I am placing another order now as a gift for a friend. I highly recommend them.
I ordered two trays of these sweets. They arrived intact and are the best I've tasted in the States and even in Lebanon. Excellent quality and flavor.

customer 's review (Love these chocolates)
(Best Chocolate bonbons in the world)
(Not Entirely Pleased with This Batch)
(Holy Smokes)
(Best gift item ever) These chocolates are the BEST! I was introduced to them in Belgium and while they are not the hottest name, they are the best chocolate. Amazon's delivery was extra quick, which is good since they are perishable (not that I have ever had one go bad, they don't last that long around my house.) Simply frabjous and brillig!!
Great treat for anyone who loves great chocolate from Belgium. I think I received a bad batch of Manon Cafe and Manon Blanc--they were a bit squished and tasted maybe past their prime. Heat wasn't a factor in the shipping process--I ordered these in January in Seattle. Or, maybe these chocolates have a different consistency than the other assortments. In the future, I think I'll stick with their Milk Chocolate or Dark Chocolate assortments. I lived in Europe for several years and Belgian chocolates are what made me a chocoholic. Of course, being young when I came back (preteen) I forgot about exactly how good Belgian chocolates are. I tasted my first Leonidas Manon Café and it all flooded back... I was in heaven. I won't eat any other chocolate now! My partner only eats white chocolate. It's difficult to find GOOD white chocolate to satisfy his tastes. He says this is the best he's ever had. I'll re-buy every Christmas! Manon Cafe...covered with white chocolate, filled with a delicate coffee butter cream, and topped with a whole hazelnut. Manon Blanc...just as delectable as the Manon Cafe, but without the hazelnut. Rerations < - Leonidas Belgian Chocolates: Signature Manon Café&Manon Blanc Ballotin >
