(Good Music!)
(i remember)
(The Only Big Band CD You'll Ever Need)
(Great Introduction and Great Toe-Tapping Listening) This disc is packed with some of the greatest hits of the big band era (great set list) but the collection's title ("The Only Big Band CD You'll Ever Need") is terribly insulting. Why assume that, after hearing killer-diller tunes like these, that modern listeners wouldn't want to dig deeper and discover more music in this rich, rewarding vein? Reducing a decade-plus of astonishing musicianship to a cultural footnote unworthy of meaningful exploration is more than just insulting (to the artists of their era and the listeners in ours) it's downright depressing. If BMG thinks so little of the music they own, why put it out at all? Lease it to someone who cares. (Axton) If you have a bunch of swing music or none at all this is a wonderful c.d. to own. It's a selection of the "favorites" of this genre of music. If you are looking for one c.d. to buy, for a friend who loves swing music or to initiate yourself to swing music, this is a good one. I love the songs and the speed with which I recevied it. Thank you It's a great cd to listen to while my students are doing math. Someone who knows the era better than I will have to tell how well-chosen the tracks are, but I've really enjoyed listening to this. The recording quality is indeed low but you need to regard that as akin to the tool marks in fine leather; they are proof of its authenticity. What do you expect for a track recorded in 1927? It's not going to be DDD. If you've ever heard some old tune that you wanted to hear again, and never knew its name, there's a good chance you'll find it on this CD Rerations < The Only Big Band CD You'll Ever Need >

(Good CD)
(God! I love Lucinda)
(Not her best, but still great)
(Typical Williams - extremely strong) What can I say...her voice is great...I can listen to this over and over. Also check out "West" and "Car Wheels On a Gravel Road" Lucinda Williams has that southern rock, southern bluesy twang to her voice and music. Some of the songs are funky, but all of them enjoyable. You can't help but to start singing and moving your body. I recommend this CD if you what a little bit of country mixed with the blues, and a little rock-n-roll woven in. Lucinda Williams! On the surface her lyrics can sometimes seem so simple, but they always hit the mark.
This album was sandwiched in between Lucinda's two masterpieces -- her self-titled album and Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. It's a marvelous record that only suffers by comparison a little bit. Make this the third Lucinda album you buy. Disclaimer: I'm a grey hair, so this review will be age biased.
Lucinda Williams has an amazing vocal ability to weave a melody that carries you. Her voice sometimes sounds strained, but she always manages to complete the note - and leave you spellbound.
The weakest song on the album I think is "He never got enough love". Would that other musicians could create something this good, but it simply isn't indicative of the quality that I have come to associate with Lucinda. Personal bias only.
The strongest? I personally liked "Which Will" and "Sweet Old World". I am not usually a slow tunes fan, but these spoke to me.
Do you need to own Lucinda Williams? No, not if you listen only to one music genre. But if your tastes transcend boundaries, or you like the folk-country-rockish music think of Lucinda. You won't be disappointed. Granted,Sweet Old Worldisn't the masterpiece that 1988'sLucinda Williamsis. The too-simple explanations of "He Never Got Enough Love" aren't up to Williams's mile-high standards, and the arrangements throughout are often so similar to that previous release's that the melodic differences here aren't as clear as they might've been. But when she raises her vulnerable cry to sing the three, pained perspectives on suicide that are at the heart of this album--the title track, "Little Angel, Little Brother," and "Pineola"--Williams's very humanity provides its own proof that, while this world can indeed be cruel, it can also be oh so sweet.--David Cantwell Rerations < Sweet Old World >

(Great movei for toddlers)
(too flashy and not as catchy)
(The Wiggles are wonderful.)
(Hoop Dee Doo) My daughter and I love their dances. She especially loves the song "Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party", the music is so beautiful. I'm glad I've bought this DVD. I had never seen or watched the wiggles before until my son showed in interest in singing and dancing. Hoop-Dee-Doo was the first Wiggles movie I bought for my 18 month old son and he loves this wiggles movie! (I too enjoy watching and singing along with him). The songs are catchy and fun with easy to do dances for the kids to follow. My son mimics the dancing and hums the tunes. If I would let him, he would watch this movie all day over and over. I wondered what all the fuss about the colors was about, now I know. Yikes! It is enough to give you a headache. The songs are just okay and I didn't see where many of them would stick in my head if I ever purchased this DVD (we borrowed it from the library). My daughter seemed to like it, though. Unfortunately, I watch DVDs with her a lot and I wasn't dying to see this one again, and we have enough other good Wiggles material already that I don't need to buy one I am not excited about. My 16 month old daughter, Marina, has loved the Wiggles since she was 2 months old. She is learning so much from them. She can do the dances to Rock-a-Bye-Bear and Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist.(which can be found on Wiggly Adventure). Hoop-Dee-Doo Wiggly Party was her first dvd of them. It is a wonderful movie. Even though they are a show for kids as most parents know these songs will get stuck in your head. lol. Play your Guitar with Murray is diffenately one of them. My son and I both enjoyed this movie. The songs were catchy. There's rarely a warm seat in the house whenever the Wiggles command the screen. This time Greg, Murray, Jeff, and Anthony host 50 minutes of flash and pizzazz inHoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party. Over a dozen vibrant song and dance routines will inspire 2- to 8-year-olds to "Dance the Ooby Doo," "Move Like an Emu," and embrace the true spirit of "Hoop-Dee-Doo!" As if the delightful energy generated by these melodic gents and their usual cast of extras isn't enough, huge kaleidoscopic backdrops groove along with each song. Then there's Captain Feathersword: often giddy to the point of falsetto, here the good captain's comedic antics nearly cause his pirate buttons to pop. But, hey--it's a party! So fluff that feather sword, shine those dancin' shoes, and prepare to wiggle up an hour's worth of giggles, polkas, wobbles, and hula steps. (Yes, "mums and dads" find Wiggles tunes irresistible, too.)--Liane Thomas Rerations < The Wiggles - Hoop-Dee-Doo! It's a Wiggly Party >

(Just Call Me Roy)
(Best Western)
(A classic western - topsy turvey)
(Price makes the movie even better) An Australian "cowboy movie"? It really works and Tom Selleck is wonderful in it! Quigley Down Under DVD
Quigley Down Under stars Tom Selleck as an expert sharpshooter hired in the 1860's by an Australian rancher (Alan Rickman) to "take care" of a problem Rickman was having with the aborigines. Also has Laura Ciacomo as a female co-star. Since Tom Selleck is one of my favorite actors (see The Shadow Riders, etc.) I thoroughly enjoyed the show. Alan Rickman is his typical evil self (see Die Hard)
The movie ends with an excellent example of a "show of force" and what that can accomplish. Highly recommended for fans of Tom Selleck, Alan Rickman, and Laura San Ciacomo. And also non-western, westerns.
Gunner August, 2008
If you like westerns this is the movie to watch. Tom Selleck makes a good western!!!!! "This ain't no Winchester 74 and you aren't Jimmy Stewart" ... No, this is the Sharps 1874 and this is Tom Selleck... both great westerns where the rifle is as much a main character as the people and the vital supporting actor. Both are classic movies. What I really enjoy in Quigley is everything is upside down... where the good guys are the natives, the bad guys are the ranchers and cavalry, and the single shot buffalo gun is the equalizer... in the hands of a good shot.
The ending showdown is one of the greatest in westerns. For the first time viewer, let the moment flow... even in reruns it never gets old. The western lives on and the fight between good and evil .. in a foreign land ... is both timeless and universal... Wyoming is just a little north of Melbourne. We love this movie and have been looking around for a bargain. The price and the quick service make for a great experience Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (Phar Lap) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood.--Tom Keogh Tom Selleck gives the boldest performance of his career in this "new style, revisionist western with the panoramic scope of a movie epic" (Los Angeles Times). Fierce gunfights, forbidding landscapes, breakneck chasesall hallmarks of the classic westernare reinvented in this hard-pounding actioner that "revitalizes the genre" and comes out "a sure winner" (The Hollywood Reporter). Arriving in Australia with nothing more than a saddle and his prized six-foot Sharps rifle, American sharpshooter Matthew Quigley thinks he's been hired to kill off wild dogs. But when herealizes, instead, that his mission is murderto "eliminate" the Aborigines from a wealthy cattlebaron's landQuigley refuses and quickly turns from hunter to hunted. Forced to wage a savage waragainst his former employer, Quigley proves that no one gets the best of a steely-eyed American gunfighterno one, that is, except the mysterious beauty (Laura San Giacomo, sex, lies, and videotape) who rides by his side and captures his heart. customer 's review (The Swing Era)
(a solid addition to info about Benny Goodman)
(Benny Goodmans's Story)
(Kingdom of swing and "The King")
(GOODMAN FAN'S SHOULD OWN THIS) If you love the swing era, this DVD is for you. Not only do you have Benny Goodman, but the stars who played with him are what made swing the great period that it was. Gene Kruppa stands out in particular. As this was taken from old movies, the picture quality may not be what one might hope, but I bought the record to listen to the music and I was not disappointed.
I watched this DVD three times in as many nights when I rented it from Netflix. The music clips were better than those I've seen in other videos. I did not mind that there were few complete music pieces, have seen them elsewhere. Two things fascinated me about this one: the commentaries from his daughters, sister, brothers, and sidemen, though some comments offered as fact conflicted with those heard/read elsewhere, so I don't know what's really true. The second thing, and why I am buying this DVD after watching it three times, is the closeups of BG's fingering, much closer than in other videos. I am learning the clarinet, and my teacher keeps trying to keep my fingers as close to the instrument as possible and has mentioned that in certain cases a particular hand does not have to leave the instrument at all. Actually seeing that approach in motion hammered that home. It seemed that very few of Benny's fingers left the clarinet at times, even in up-tempo numbers. Seeing the undisputed master doing it is a great inspiration. And, yes, I know about his personality, warts and all, but as Jess Stacy says in the video, when you hear him, all is forgiven. This DVD production is about the life and times of musical great Benny Goodman. It is not a presentation of complete performances. It would have been nice to have had at least several complete performances from beginning to end , perhaps as bonus tracks. However, the clips that were briefly presented were fabulous. Other reviewers have stated in more detail the specifics of this DVD especially all of the collaborations of the other great musical talents of the time. This is a must have DVD for Benny Goodman fans. I will only give this 4 stars because of the annoying way the clips were edited. Benny has only one thing in his mind since the age of nine: "Clarinet". This documentary reveals in an excelent manner in only one hour what minds Clarinet and swing music in the hands and body of this virtuose man called Benny Goodman. You can find a lot of his music and interpretations and take in mind the next two things: if you know Benny you must see the movie; but if you don't know Benny, plese see the documentary and enjoy his magnificient playing from his young years during all his career. I FOUND THIS DVD VERY INTERESTING. YOU'LL BE DISSAPPOINTED IF YOU'RE EXPECTING A CONCERT. ANYWAY THIS DVD COVERS BENNY'S RISE TO THE TOP. INTERVIEWS WITH FORMER BAND MEMBERS AND FAMILY, PLUS BENNY HIMSELF, MAKE THIS GOOD. WHAT A FANTATIC MUSICIAN. HE ALWAYS SURROUNDED HIMSELF WITH A GREAT BAND, SOME OF WHOM BECAME STARS THEMSELVES. THERE ARE LOTS OF EXAMPLES OF BENNY PLAYING IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS. ONE OF THE BEST IS BENNY PLAYING"AVALON"WITH LIONEL HAMPTON, GENE KRUPA AND TEDDY WILSON. THIS ALONE IS WORTH THE COST. customer 's review (FINALLY in widescreen and digital !)
(A Little Tarnish On the Badge)
(Blue Knights)
(Excellent Police Drama)
(New Centurions) This has been one of my favourite cop/action movies. My vhs copy always looked fuzzy and faded, so I'm glad to see this movie in widescreen and with vibrant colours. The Martini Movies supplements are silly and not worth looking at.
It is 1972 and fellow cops Stacey Keach and George C. Scott are on the night shift making the rounds in their squad car or paddy wagon. They end up being forced to come to terms between their personal lives and their consuming and often dangerous professional life. It is a pleasure to see these two fine actors in one film. Quincy Jones' funky score thankfully doesn't overwhelm the unfolding drama.
I don't know why I seldom see this movie mentioned but it is a keeper.
Joseph Wambaugh brings a unique perspective to the police movie in that he is a former cop relating personal experiences in his work. It was rare at the time of the film's release that you saw an up close and personal look at the happenings in the inner cities and barrios. I also found it refreshing that a film at this time portrays in a thoughtful way interracial romance. Despite all the positives here, alas, the film I think is slightly undone by the workmanlike direction of journeyman Richard Fleischer("Dr. Doolittle"). This film deserved to be helmed by someone like Sidney Lumet("Serpico"), William Friedkin ("The French Connection") or Don Siegel("Dirty Harry"). Fleisher's direction, at times, barely transcends an episode of "Adam-12". Regardless, this is a worthwhile film highlighted by sterling performances by George C. Scott as a grizzled cop and Stacey Keach as a rookie whose enthusiasm for the job slowly evolves into despair. Interesting to note the prescence of James B. Sikking("Hill Street Blues") and Erik Estrada "C.H.I.P.S."). Wambaugh would be done justice a few years later with a television version of "The Blue Knight" starring William Holden. Thankfully, "The Choirboys" isn't available on disc. This is the neglected big screen version of Joseph Wambaugh's landmark novel and it holds up really well. The format shifts from that of the book as I recall it, and instead of following three rookies as they come on the force we mainly get a dual portrait of an old-timer and one of the newbies. There are some effective episodes and the filmmakers are ahead of the curve in depicting the underlying racial tensions of the L.A. streets. (Although these scenes are diluted a bit by some of the stereotypes of the performances.) The two leads are very effective though. Keach carries the picture with his intense earnestness and Scott's final scene is one long take that's a knockout. If you like police movies, you'll love this one. Stacy Keach and Erik Estrada (CHiPs, in one of his first movies) are graduates of the police academy as they begin their careers within the police department. Of special interest is the relationship between Keach and George C. Scott (a seasoned veteran looking forward to retirement).
This is a true-to-life story of cops and their daily struggles as they balance their jobs with their personal life. George C. Scott is excellent in this movie and worth watching for his acting alone. Stacy Keach gives a great performance as a new cop juggling family and his quest to further his career beyond the police department.
Plenty of action sequences and a true depiction of the struggles that our police force face on a daily basis. Watch Erik Estrada in one of his earliest roles.
A must see movie for action, drama, and life on the streets. I own the VHS version and I am glad that this movie was finally released on DVD. A true classic.
I was happy to learn that this movie will be released on DVD this September. I saw this movie some years ago and bought the tape.
George C. Scott, Stacey Keach and Erik Estrada were all great in their roles. The ending is sad when Keach is killed and Erik Estrada prays in Spanish. I think he speaks beautiful spanish. In another scene, he speaks Spanish when several Mexican immigrants are taken advantage of by a slum lord.
I await this DVD. Fans of the TV seriesPolice StoryandHill Street Blueswill dig this gritty 1972 drama based on Joseph Wambaugh's groundbreaking first novel. George C. Scot |
