Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Healthy snack for my dogs..) 『Sam's Yams Veggie Rawhide Big Boyz - 1 lb
My Golden and Old English love these. A newspaper article I read said these are healthy for the dogs and to us humans-they even smell nice..』
(Sam's Yams) 『I have a six year old Golden Retriever with an extremely delicate digestive system. Recently she bled internally after chewing a rawhide. Needless to say, once I calmed my guilt, I had to find a healthy alternatve because she loved to chew on cheweeze rawhides as a treat. (My Vet told me rawhides can be extremely dangerous for some dogs.)
I knew she liked sweet potato, so when I discovered Sam's Yams, I figured, why not give them a try? The result, she absolutely loves them!!! I have to keep reordering 3 bags at a time because she barks at the cabinet we keep them in until I give her another.
Sam's Yams is such a wonderful and healthy alternative to rawhide. It is also a low fat treat, which is wonderful for breeds that have a tendency to put weight on.
I cannot say enough about this product. My dog loves them, my Vet approves and that makes me a very happy owner.
They are sliced in different sizes for small, medium and large dogs. If your dogs love to chew, why not give them a try?』
(great product) 『My dog has many food allergies so she is not able to chew on most dog bones. This product is great because I can give them to her without her skin breaking out into a rash. I rated these a 4 instead of a 5 because I wish they lasted longer. She loves the taste and will gobble them up in a minute or two. Still worth buying though』 『Sam's Yams Big Boyz are made of very thick slabs of sweet potato. Made for larger dogs (but small dogs will enjoy them, too)! Finally a veggie alternative to rawhide! During the winter months we treat our dogs to warm sweet potatoes as a Sunday dinner treat. Now your dog can enjoy this great tasting, highly nutritious snack, too. Now there is a natural, vegetarian way for your dog to enjoy that "rawhide" texture. Sam's Veggie Rawhide chews are made of whole thick slabs of sweet potato, dehydrated. They have a hard surface, excellent for dental health, and a chewability that dogs love.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (My dog is obsessed with these!) 『I found these at an organic pet food store and was told that they are irresistible! I have an incredibly picky Schnauzer/Shar Pei who refuses to eat regular treats and will only eat Pet Promise Bison canned food. Well, she love love loves these treats! My other dog (a Chow Chow) also loves these (though he is a less finicky eater, so I have to trick him with lesser snacks).
Anyhow, I am a big Amazon user. I get shipment after shipment (mostly books). And I have to say I very rarely give a review. However I was provoked by the one negative review that this product has. It's a great product and I think a ridiculous review like the one above needs to be countered. So, let me say this: first of, if you are criticizing a pet food for being a particular animal, then you are absolutely ridiculous. Yes, this product is some straight-up rabbit. And that rabbit got killed. But unless your dog is one a vegan diet (which would not be suitable), then you are a hypocrite. Whether is is a cow or a chicken or a rabbit, animals do die for dog food and treats--and carnivorous animals are snacking on rabbit or whatnot all over the globe.
You should have the logical capabilities necessary to appreciate that this is a FREE RANGE product. That means that it is already entirely better than 99% of the crap people feed their dogs! There are also no additives or chemicals--making this a safer and more healthy treat for your little Fido.
If you aren't buying this product because you have some ridiculous illusion that other animals have less of a right to live than a rabbit, then go shove off. And if you care about your pet, if your pet is picky or whatnot, and you don't want them pumped full of by-products and hormones (and you can afford the price), then this is going to be a fabulous treat for you.
I have never in my history of raising dogs (and rescuing dogs) come across a better treat created with such care.』
(My dogs love these) 『I have 3 dogs. All three used to really enjoy Bully Sticks, but they have since developed some kind of reaction to them. The vet said to switch to rabbit based treats.
We bought these and it turns out that all three dogs give the product a "paws up."
Is it weird to feed rabbit to a dog? I don't think so. Rabbit is a tasty, cheap, healthy protein.
Try it.』
(absolutely disgusting) 『Rabbits are pets. We have both dogs and rabbits. Who ever thought this was a good product to make is a sicko.』 『Guaranteed Analysis: Crude Protein (Min.) - 32.5% Crude Fat (Min.) - 2.0% Crude Fiber (Max.) - 6.5% Moisture (Max.) - 20.0% Ash (Max.) - 2.5%』

It has chunks of duck/s. potato solids in a "sauce" which nicely coats the dry kernels. She comes to me after her dinner with her tail wagging - high praise indeed.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Outstanding Christmas Music) 『If you love accapella choral music, sometimes with light instrumentation, and SUPERB voices, buy this DVD. I cannot stop playing it, even after Christmas. Love it!』
(All I can say is...wow.) 『I just ordered every recording ever done by the Dale Warland Singers on the strength of this album, my first experience with this group. Where have I been all these years?
I have a couple of discs by the BYU Singers, directed by Dr. Ronald Staehli. They are very similar in quality, polish and emotional depth to this group, with an added religious element that deepens the emotional content of their music. The BYU Singers' versions of the Whitacre tunes are very good. But a BYU Singers disc will have a couple of tracks that are a bit boring or somewhat puzzling as to why they were included. This disc is strong all the way through.
Wow.
If you are in love with the Dale Warland Singers, I do recommend listening to the BYU Singers if you come across them. You'll find tracks that are in the same league as what you are listening to on this disc.』
(Excellent) 『To anyone who appreciates choral music, or even some of you who only like to listen to it during the holidays, this is the album for you. The music is so familiar, but so aesthetically pleasing to listen to. The choir sounds clear and majestic from the clear sounds of the basses to the beautiful pings of the sopranos. Forget the garbbled sounds of Choirs with people who think that singing in Forte the whole way through is beautiful. This is angelic, yet very fun to listen to. Enjoyment for the whole family. 5 Stars』
(Perfect) 『This CD is worth buying for the track Prepare the Way alone. All the tracks are amazing, but that one is the best.』
(Classic Dale Warland) 『As has been the case with most DWS recordings, this is truly a classic. Beautifully sung, with new and interesting arrangements of traditional favorites, this disc is a must for all holiday music and DWS fans. Of note are Stephen Paulus' rhythmic"The Holly and the Ivy"and Praetorius' beautiful"Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming"arranged by Jan Sandström. I highly recommend this recording.』 『The Dale Warland Singers make their debut on Gothic with a beautiful new Christmas CD, featuring imaginative arrangements of carols from around the world. (Annie Lennox is great) 『The music on this disc is fantastic, Satelite of love is nearly inmpossible to find.』
(Sweet Tunes Is This) 『One of the most abrupt turnarounds in music history (listen to their first album, it's like an entirely different band. Remember the difference between Radioheads 'Pablo Honey' and 'The Bends'? Well, if you do, you get the idea), Sweet Dreams is an astonishing piece of 80's pop history. I am suprised how little this album has aged or how it has avoided feeling dated. Sure, there are a few sounds and synths here and there that do bring you right there, but Annie sings with such gusto, and the vocals are so upfront. A lot of music from this era have the vocals drowning in production, not so here. The songs are meaty and catchy, the elctronica works, without taking away from the rest, making the record warm and edgy at the same time. There are of course lot of moments anyone aged 11 in 1983 will remember, specialy Love is a stranger and Sweet Dreams, but I never bought this album back then, so discovering all the rest was a real treat in January 2008.
Oh, and I really enjoyed the bonus tracks on this release. The 7'' b-sides are good, even fun, and remembering buying 12'' singles, it's always a treat hearing those remixes again or for the first time!
This album is duly recommended!』
(Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams) 『This was one of my favorites on "tape" back in the mid-80's when I bought it and still is. Now my tape is almost worn out, and I am so glad to see it on CD!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of the songs never got much air time, but their intracacy of melody and lyrics deserve to be listened to, even now.』 『Singer Annie Lennox and guitarist Dave Stewart first received notice in the Tourists, scoring a big U.K. hit in 1979 with a cover of Dusty Springfield's "I Only Want to Be With You." Emerging as the Eurythmics in 1981, Lennox's cabaret-tinged vocal style and Stewart's left-of-center songs took a while to mesh, but when they finally did, with the haunting, hook-filled 1983 No. 1 single, "Sweet Dreams" (accompanied by one of the most striking videos ever made), the two found themselves rocketing to stardom. This, their second album, also features their initial British hit, "Love Is a Stranger," and an icy-cool cover of Sam and Dave's r&b classic, "Wrap It Up."--Billy Altman
This edition has been digitally re-mastered from the original master tapes by Eurythmics mastermind Dave Stewart, with input from collaborator Annie Lennox. In addition, there are seven bonus tracks: a mixture of b-sides, remixes, and previously unreleased material (notably a cover of Lou Reeds' beautiful "Satellite of Love"). The packaging is a six-panel digipack redesign orchestrated by Laurence Stevens Design, the firm who art-directed all the original releases, while the thick booklets contain rare photos and insightful, new sleeve notes.』
『We have painstakingly collated the original master tapes and with the supervision of Dave Stewart, have remastered them to the highest standard possible. The sound quality is truly amazing and has to be heard to be believed.
Each album will feature bonus material compiled with the assistance of Dave and Annie. Rare B sides never before released on CD, classic remixes and most excitingly, unreleased recordings, including a series of amazing cover versions plus live and acoustic performances.
Each reissue has been redesigned by Laurence Stevens Design | LSD the creative agency who has worked with the band throughout their entire career. All eight albums will be released in deluxe digipack packaging, and each album will be stickered to highlight the wealth of bonus material on each release. The 18 to 24 page booklets include refreshed front sleeve artwork, original single sleeves and most importantly previously unseen photography covering the bands whole career. Phill Savidge renowned PR guru and Eurythmics fan has, through various interviews with Dave and Annie, written sleeve notes for each album. Insightful, provactive and `unput downable', they help bring the bands incredible story and music alive.』
『Japanese pressing has been remastered with 6 bonus tracks including a previously unreleased cover of Lou Reed's 'Satellite of Love'. The Eurythmics' breakthrough album is a deft mix of electronic thrills, new wave chills, and sultry R&B, the latter supplied by Annie Lennox's warm tenor. Pretty much relying on themselves, Lennox and Dave Stewart slip past the music's usual coldness and into a territory all their own. It can be smug (the new wave here is served with a side of irony) and a tad dull (the long, operatic pieces serve little purpose), but the payoffs 'Love Is a Stranger' and, especially, the magnificent title tune are among the finest the genre has to offer. Actually, radio has sucked since the late 80's. Since this is not a review of radio all I can say is follow amazon's reviews by fellow music lovers and trust them. Buy this album and then try Under The Covers with Suzanne Hoffs. And please turn off your radio as it is filled with what the music industry wants you to hear, not this great stuff.』
(Matthews Sweetest) 『I own over five thousand CDs, Tapes and Records. This is my all time absolute favorite. I was in my early twenties when this came out. I don't know how many cracks I put on the steering wheel of my 74 Chevy Nova banging my fists to this album. The title track is great and gets you right into the record. He just plays great down home, grass roots rock and roll. No extra crap. Some of the songs are quite sad like You Dont Love Me and Winona. They could downright make you cry. Thank God for Matthew Sweet, as he tried to singlehandedly save us all from the deeply mired heavy Seattle Sound of the early nineties.』
(Classic) 『Thank God. I heard Girlfriend, the single, on the radio one day about a year or two ago. That lead to a download and the purchase of the album a few days later. What seemed impulsive was overpowered by the feeling that a masterpiece had been uncovered. I hate the superlative language thrown around for these sorts of things, but this has proven to be no flight of fancy. This guy, Matthew Sweet, writes songs that connect. You can feel it. The twin guitar virtuosos who appear here deserve big credit. Big drive. Big. It sounds great. Gritty and foot stompin'. And, what a recording. Near 49 now. Sometimes its raw. Sometimes its ennui. This recording captures both ends. It also rocks. randolph wish 』
(Been listening to it since it came out...) 『Hard to believe, but this album is just as fresh as the day I first opened it 15 years ago. I keep finding new ways to enjoy it. In the 90's it was with the top down in the car, in rotation with Mazzy Star, Nirvana, the Chili Peppers and whatever was playing on K-USF.
A few years ago, when I went to the gym, I had it in the walkman and discovered that IT IS THE PERFECT WORKOUT CD OF ALL TIME on any kind of step, treadmill or orbital-type machine. NO KIDDING. 'Divine Intervention' is the perfect warm-up, 'I've Been Waiting' picks up the tempo, 'Girlfriend' is a great fat-blaster. Just watch it or you'll find yourself singing out loud - at the gym. Anyhow, you'll be groovin' and rockin' out, up and down. Turns out the ups and down's of a break-up are an ideal pace for a work-out. Cooling down to 'Nothing Lasts' is bliss. By now, I must have listened to it over a hundred times just working out alone.
So now I'm forty, mom to a 2-year-old, wife to a guy who was six years old when I snuck out with my friend Jeff's big sister's friends to see the Sex Pistols when they were in SF. Seen a lot of bands and listened to a lot of different albums since and have to say, this album is as fresh as the day it was minted. Buy the album, and form your own relationship with it - you won't regret it.』
(A power pop classic) 『This record was a revelation when it came out, and remains as vibrant and bracing today. It is one of the absolute best power pop records of the 90s, a decade in which that genre experienced something of a renaissance (Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Velvet Crush, Jellyfish etc.)
Sweet had made a couple of unremarkable records before this one. I think two things made it leap out of the CD player and into our collective conscious. One was the sublime twin guitar work of Richard Lloyd (Television) and Robert Quine (NYC downtown guitar hero and notably on some of Lou Reed's most powerful work.) These two guys blaze and smolder throughout these melodic, harmonic songs, providing more bite and panache than most records you will hear in any genre. The performances of Quine and Lloyd in service to Sweet's catchy numbers creates the illusion of two tigers tamed; you can feel the excitement of their ferociousness on every track, even the soft, cotton-candy-sweet "Your Sweet Voice."
The second thing that makes this record stand apart is the fact that it is a break-up record, and a great one. From the optimistic second tune, the infectious "I've Been Waiting," through to the desolate "Nothing Lasts," you can hear Sweet laying bare the gamut of emotions involved in a relationship and its dissolution. Like Paul Simon's Hearts and Bones or Richard and Linda Thompson's Shoot Out the Lights-or perhaps most aptly, Fleetwood Mac's Rumours-a good break-up record transcends time and trends and endures.
Every subsequent Mathew Sweet record has a few gems, and some folks will even argue that the follow-up, Dinosaur Act, is the better album. It is a good one, but this is where the Mathew Sweet legend begins and reaches its fullest heights. 』 『After being dropped from A&M Records thanks toGirlfriend's rough edges, Matthew Sweet might hardly have expected great commercial success when another label brought the album out toward the end of 1991. But an alternative-welcome climate at rock radio stations, along with undeniably great songs and aggressive lead-guitar work by ex-Voidoid Robert Quine and former Television member Richard Lloyd, made the disc an eventual gold-selling hit. Years later,Girlfriend's probe of romance found, lost, and found again continues to sound fresh and daring.--Rickey Wright』 『Japanese Re-Release Containing Bonus Tracks.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Sanitized version of a powerful Williams melodrama) 『Paul Newman was always worth watching, and this is certainly not his worst movie, but I would rate Geraldine Page's splendid version of the drama queen, the down and out Hollywood diva with the come back knack, even higher.
If you don't know the story: Newman comes to his hometown on the Gulf coast with drunken Page in tow; he is her driver plus other jobs; they have some beautiful developments of their relationship, and this is really the best aspect of the movie. His ambition is to make her help him to the acting career that has eluded him so far.
His problem in his home town is that he is not welcome. He was the unacceptable lover boy of the town boss's daughter. The boss had sent him away, but he came back a few times. Now the patience with him has run out, mainly because of some consequences that the Newman character doesn't even know about yet.
And 'not welcome' means more than just getting frowned upon. The play has some drastic action which is left out here. The play is not remotely considering a happy end, but Hollywood seems to have insisted. Sorry if that is a spoiler, but with 'classic' theater plays one assumes that people don't watch them for 'suspense'.
Nothing about the movie is outstandingly original, but you get the essence of TW's play, plus strong acting by Newman and Page, so no bad choice.』
(This film is very sweet indeed...) 『It's become common knowledge to me that playwright Tennessee Williams has never been able to have his plays accurately transferred from stage to screen. He is just too extreme for the time period in which he lived. The very idea of castration, syphilis or racism (and that's just this play) was just too much for 60's cinema. Regardless though, his films still managed to be effortless and poignant and dramatically outstanding. `Sweet Bird of Youth' is just one of many (`Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' and `A Streetcar Named Desire' being his best film adaptations). Whether or not it was able to tackle everything Williams' wanted it to, the fact remains that it is a stellar production that I am sure made him proud.
The film follows Chance Wayne, a dreamer of sorts who is trying to make it big in Hollywood. He left his hometown girlfriend Heavenly behind in order to pursue a career for himself and solidify their future, but in his absence her father, Boss Finley, has promised her hand to another. When Chance returns home with washed up actress Alexandra Del Lago, Boss and his temperamental son Tom Jr. set out scheming a way to get Chance out of town, for good.
As always, secrets from their past bubble forth to expose the foundation for their hatred of one another, thus creating some very tense and equally steamy moments.
The performances are outstanding across the board, especially by the two leads. I have made it very clear that I consider Paul Newman that greatest actor of all time, and I stand by that still. He embodies Chance with his natural charm, but he adds these touching layers of vulnerability that make Chance a very understandable and sympathetic young man. He uses those around him, but his acts are far from selfish. Geraldine Page is phenomenal here, completely and utterly unforgettable. I have mentioned before how I feel Newman is the perfect co-star, and he definitely works his magic at aiding Page in delivering an outstanding performance. He just seems to naturally fit with whoever is sharing the screen with him. Page feeds off that to infuse her character with an almost reluctant charm, which is refreshing and intoxicating.
The supporting cast is all stellar, with Shirley Knight, Ed Begley, Madeleine Sherwood and Rip Torn all delivering top notch performances; especially Rip Torn, who is dastardly as the young and impetuous son of the Boss, searching and striving for approval.
`Sweet Bird of Youth' is a cautionary tale about the blessings and maledictions that come with age. Youth is a sweet bird, but bitter sweet really. Looking at both the characters of Chance and Alexandra we see the opposing sides of that argument. Chance is young and foolish and thus winds up suffering from his own immaturity, while Alexandra is older, more world-wise and yet she suffers from a society that rejects age as if it were an illness.
Startling and absorbing, `Sweet Bird of Youth' is an outstanding example of enthralling cinema; a film that grabs you and never lets you go. With fantastic performances, a strong script and a delicate hand behind the camera (Brooks works with Williams well, as he proved with 58's `Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' and cemented with this gem), this is a must-see film for any and everyone.』
(Performances Elevate Film To Greatness) 『I'm not a big Tennessee Williams fan but this film grabbed me. For sure it's a potboiler but what a sizzler. Foremost are the performances here most notably by Oscar winner Ed Begley and Geraldine Page. Begley's role, though a supporting one, as a corrupt politico is one of those rare turns that envelope the whole movie much like Marlon Brando in "The Godfather" and Anthony Hopkins in "The Silence of the Lambs". Calling everybody laddie through a cynical smile wielding a cane Begley's malevolence leaves an indelible stench that permeates your nervous system. Page's alcoholic fading movie star could have been cliched but she gives her character great empathy and humanity. The film's ostensible star, Paul Newman, as an aging gigolo wisely defers to his co-stars. Also good are Rip Torn as Begley's sadistic son and Shirley Knight as Begley's tormented daughter. An excellent film all around.』
(The Fickle Bird Of Youth) 『The first couple of paragraphs here have been used as introduction to other plays written by Tennessee Williams and reviewed in this space. This review applies to both the stage play and the film versions with differences noted as part of the review
Perhaps, as is the case with this reviewer, if you have come to the works of the excellent American playwright Tennessee Williams through adaptations of his plays to commercially distributed film you too will have missed some of the more controversial and intriguing aspects of his plays that had placed him at that time along with Eugene O'Neill and Arthur Miller as America's finest serious playwrights. Although some of the films have their own charms I want to address the written plays in this entry first (along with, when appropriate, commentary about Williams' extensive and detailed directing instructions).
That said, there are certain limitations for a political commentator like this reviewer on the works of Williams. Although his plays, at least his best and most well-known ones, take place in the steamy South or its environs, there is virtually no acknowledgement of the race question that dominated Southern life during the period of the plays; and, for that matter was beginning to dominate national life. Thus, although it is possible to pay homage to his work on its artistic merits, I am very, very tentative about giving fulsome praise to that work on its political merits. With that proviso Williams nevertheless has created a very modern stage on which to address social questions at the personal level like homosexuality, incest and the dysfunctional family that only began to get addressed widely well after his ground-breaking work hit the stage.
"Sweet Bird Of Youth" is a case in point. Not for the first time, a seemingly 1950's style All- American boy Chance who has left his hometown, his home town girl and his roots behind to drift in that endless spiral toward fame- Hollywood and the movies, naturally- comes back to claim what is his by right. On this little hometown reunion Chance is in the service of one aging and fretful actress who has her own issues with that elusive `bird of youth'. In his return to town it appears that Chance has stirred up a hornet's nest with the local political establishment in the person of one red-neck preacher turned politician in order to better do "god's work", old Tom Findley. The object of this dispute is one Heavenly Findley, old Ton's daughter and Chance's left behind paramour who is now the subject of some scandal (due to the amorphously stated need for female-related medical treatment due to Chance's irresponsibility). Along the way we get to see how political power is distributed in a small Southern town as well as the inevitable tempting of the fates by Chance in order to win the `brass ring' before it is too late (apparently somewhere over thirty, by my reckoning). At play's end though, where he is between a rock and a hard place, Chance may not get the chance to be Chance at thirty. Oh, that fickle bird of youth. Still, Chance, go for it.
In the movie version the recently departed excellent actor Paul Newman, a classic example of a 1950's All-American boy type (among his other acting talents), as the movie star `wannabe' and Geraldine Page as the aging actress recreated their stage performances although with a greater screen presence for Ms. Page. Moreover, Chance's strivings to reconnect with Heavenly are more central to the plot. More importantly, the endings differ in that, despite some mauling by Tom Findley's boys Chance takes my advice from the play version and runs, with Heavenly, just as far and as fast as his now aging legs can carry him. 』
(TENNESSEE WROTE THIS WITH TALLULAH BANKHEAD IN MIND...) 『THIS MOVIE, DISAPPOINTED TENNESSEE WILLIAMS, BECAUSE OF THE CHANGES MADE BY THE CENSORS. THE FILM DOES CONVEY THE ACTUAL PERSONALITY OF THIS POSSIBLY GREATEST OF ALL AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS. A REAL INSIGHT INTO THE INNER PSYCHE OF MR. WILLIAMS, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS A "POET OF THE EMOTIONS".
THE CHARACTER OF ALEXANDRA DE LAGO MIRRORED THE PERSONALITY OF MR. WILLIAMS, IN THAT HE HAD EXPERIENCED A BRILLIANT CAREER, AND WAS GETTING OLDER, AND SUFFERING MORE HEALTH PROBLEMS. THE CHANCE WAYNE CHARACTER PLAYED BY PAUL NEWMAN, ILLUSTRATES THE TYPE OF MAN MR. WILLIAMS WAS MOST EMOTIONALLY ATTRACTED TO IN LIFE. GERALDINE PAGE GIVES AN INTERESTING PERFORMANCE, BUT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A MUCH BETTER FILM, IF INDEED TALLULAH BANKHEAD COUD HAVE PLAYED THIS PART, ESPECIALLY WRITTEN FOR HER BY MR. WILLIAMS, AND ONE HE WANTED HER TO PLAY.
TALLULAH BANKHEAD TURNED THE PART DOWN BECAUSE SHE FELT IT WAS THE STORY OF ANOTHER DEGRADED SOUTHERN WOMAN. ED BEGLEY STEALS THE SHOW IN THIS FILM, AND DESERVEDLY WON AN OSCAR FOR HIS PERFORMANCE.』 『Sweet Bird of Youthhas the Tennessee Williams penchant for provocation and Southern depravity--although at this point, the bloom is somewhat off the hothouse flower. Paul Newman is a cad who dreams of glory; he's returned to his hometown towing a dissolute, over-the-hill Hollywood star (Geraldine Page re-creates her Broadway role), certain she'll be his meal ticket. He's ruined the only girl he really loved (day-dreamy Shirley Knight), who just happens to be the daughter of the town's boss (Ed Begley, in an Oscar®-winning role). The play's more shocking elements have been euphemized, in the custom of the era's Williams movie adaptations. Director Richard Brooks handles it with intensity, and Rip Torn (who was married to Page) has some wicked moments, but the movie is bound to its theatrical roots and its inability to mention racism, syphilis, or castration. And that's Tennessee Williams without the hot sauce.--Robert Horton』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (great soundtrack) 『This is a good movie about explosive late 60s race relations. But the soundtrack is not listed on Amazon. So I will use the movie entry to review the soundtack.
Quincy Jones, one of the absolute best film composers of this time, wrote the Lost Man Soundtrack, and it is excellent. It holds a lot of soul and blues by unknown singers, and lots of electrified flutes and heavy fuzz bass. It is typlically outstanding work by Jones, who understood jazz and blues better than any composer of the period. He also understood how to exploit tone color to get the maximum tension from the film.
The music, however, holds up beautifully on its own, and I would encourage anyone to seek out this soundtrack on vynal, until someone has the good sense to reissue The Lost Man score.』
(Good intentions, bad script) 『Starting with a gripping, truly firstclass title score and equally touching, well fotographed views of Philadelphia's poor downtown neighbourhoods, this film spirals gradually downward and left me disappointed. The script ist bad: Most of the time people stand around and don't really have to say much to each other - you almost feel pity for the actors who certainly would have been able to deliver better performances, if the script had allowed them to. The movie is based on the same story as Carol Reed's Odd Man Out - in my opinion one of the best movies of all times. Odd Man Out focuses on the main character, his doubts, his desperation and the reaction of the people he meets as a helpless, severely wounded man on the run after falling off a getaway car rushing from the scene of a robbery he had planned. The Lost Man, by comparison, does never appear to be really lost. He can contact his friends easily after he escapes alone from the scene of the robbery, despite a bullet wound he appears to be in perfect physical condition, and apparently it poses no problem to pass through road blocks as long as you have a social worker handy who loves you, does not question your motives - and owns a station wagon. I suppose that the attitudes of the characters can be explained by the political and social climate of the late Sixties but it is sad that nobody let Sidney Poitier do in this film what James Mason did in Odd Man out.』
(FINALLY,THE LOST MAN IS FOUND!) 『THIS MOVIE IS THE FIRST TRUE BLAXPLOITATION FILM, LONG BEFORE THERE WAS A SWEETBACK, SHAFT, OR SUPERFLY. SIDNEY POITIER'S PERFORMANCE, AS ALWAYS, STANDS OUT. AT THE TIME THIS MOVIE WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED (1969), THE CRITICS AND THE PUBLIC CRITICIZED MR. POITIER FOR BEING THE PERFECT NEGRO IN HIS PREVIOUS FILMS (IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, GUESS WHO COMING TO DINNER, THE SLENDER THREAD, DUEL AT DIABLO,ETC). HOWEVER, IN THE LOST MAN, MR. POITIER PORTRAYS A 1960'S REVOLUTIONARY WHO MASTERMINDS A DARING ROBBERY THAT GOES WRONG AND PLACES HIM ON THE RUN FROM THE POLICE. A FINE SUPPORTING CAST WITH A EDGE OF THE SEAT, NAIL-BITING CLIMAX THAT WILL LEAVE YOU BREATHLESS.FOR A FILM THAT IS CLOSE TO 40 YEARS OLD, THE MOVIE STILL HOLDS UP VERY WELL AND IS ANOTHER PIECE OF THE POWERFUL BODY OF FILM WORK OF SIDNEY POITIER.』

You can even shut the sound off and watch the light, shadow, form, line, etc. With the sound on you will hear music and sound highly appropriate to each scene....especially the dialogue. In some ways it kind of reminds me of Rudyard Kipling's "Kim". There's not really a plot, as such, there's just people who come together for a while, do their thing, and part.
A couple of things make it clear this is a WWII propaganda film made to encourage wartime Anglo-American friendship and understanding: Sgt Johnson impresses the locals with his knowledge of lumber, and then goes on to slam isolationists who oppose the Lend Lease program. At the end he is completely overwhelmed by the glory of Canterbury Cathedral, but remains proud of his small rural church back in Oregon.
What else to say. Well, Kent is laid out in all its glory. I lived in the UK for a couple of years in the mid 1980's, and got to travel all over, including to Kent. Seeing the hop gardens, drying sheds, and the manicured British countryside brought a nostalgic lump to my throat.
Great movie. I think I'm going to go on a Criterion Collection WWII movie buying spree.』
(A Treasure of a Film) 『A CANTERBURY TALE is an enchanting film from British filmmakers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The film takes place during the height of World War II and originally served as a propaganda tool for the British Ministry of Information. But underneath the exterior of the film, there is a deep underlying meaning of revisiting and taking a pilgrimage to the past in order to understand the present.
Powell and Pressburger invoke British romanticism and spiritualism that is clearly shown with the shadow and light essence of the film that is exceptionally conveyed and characterized through the cinematography. Undeniably, the beautiful English countryside and village landscape offers a quaintness and familiarity that echoes home in terms of American versus British identity, which is seen and heard in the conversations between American G.I., Sgt. Bob Johnson (John Sweet) and British soldier, Sgt. Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price) as they speak atop a grassy hill as well as throughout the film. Also, there is a complex subplot that involves Alison Smith (Sheila Sim) who served in the British Women's Land Army and the town's Magistrate, Thomas Colpepper (Eric Portman), which is ambiguously portrayed.
Overall, THE CANTERBURY TALE is indeed on the list of thought-provoking films. It subtly recants Chaucer's original tale, but it is an original Powell and Pressburger production that that resonates the history of England. This is definitely a film that should be viewed more than once.』
(Fine Film - Glorious Remastering - But Needed a Single CD) 『Criterion here offers a remarkable film; quiet and unprentenious and unspoiled by heavy plot machinations or ersatz pumping-up of story. The battle of the village boys remains the high point, but the entire film resonates the director's love for his native Kent countryside. The amateur American actor gives the interplay among the characters a decided contrast and conveniently served to mark the differences between the American and the British. The cinematography was as natural as ever with this team's films. Criterion offers this as a set of two CDs. Good as the extras are, they end up raising the price to the point I fear very few people will give this film a look. Too bad. 39.99 is is a pretty steep toll for a film most Americans will be taking a chance on. But the quality is certainly first class, so those buying the CD will have as fine a version as possible.』
(England - land of hope and glory) 『I am so glad this extraordinary film has been remastered, returned to its original edit, and preserved on DVD. I love some of Michael Powell's films -- some I'm lukewarm about -- I love this one. A CANTERBURY TALE is quite lovely. It's not quite perfect -- don't be put off by the little "glue man" mystery -- it's a device -- and it works in the overall plot. These actors are superb, and the film is a moving tribute to England and her people during the darkest days of WW II. I cannot say enough about how beautiful it is. Be sure to watch the special features and read the essays in the booklet that all make up this very special DVD package. Don't miss this one.
A side note from a native Atlantan -- this is the film which Margaret Mitchell was crossing Peachtree Street to see when struck by a hit-and-run driver.』 『One of the most beloved of all British films,A Canterbury Talemarks yet another occasion to celebrate the Criterion Collection's growing DVD legacy of Powell and Pressburger classics. Originally conceived as good-natured propaganda to support the British-American alliance of World War II, the film became something truly special in the hands of the Archers (a.k.a. writer/director/producers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger). Taking its literary cues from Chaucer's titular classic, it begins with a prologue that harkens back to Chaucer's time before match-cutting to present-day August of 1943, with the night-time arrival of U.S. Army Sgt. Bob Johnson (played with folksy charm by John Sweet, an actual American GI) on the shadowy platform of Canterbury station in the magically rural county of Kent (where Powell was born and raised). He is soon joined by two fellow train passengers: Alison Smith (Sheila Sim), a brashly independent recruit in the British Woman's Land Army; and Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price), a sergeant in the royal Army, and before long they're tracking clues to find "the glue man," a mysterious figure who's been pouring "the sticky stuff" on unsuspecting women as the midnight hour approaches. Their investigation leads to Thomas Colpeper (Eric Portman), a village squire whose local slide-shows celebrate life in an idyllic rural England threatened by wartime change. As Graham Fuller writes in an observant mini-essay that accompanies this DVD, is this a whodunit? Historical documentary? War film? Rustic comedy? It's all these and so much more: As photographed in glorious black and white by Erwin Hiller (faithfully preserved by one of Criterion's finest high-definition digital transfers),A Canterbury Talehas an elusive, magical quality that encompasses its trio of Canterbury "pilgrims" and translates into a an elusive, spiritually uplifting sense of elation that has made it an all-time favorite among film lovers around the world.--Jeff Shannon
On the DVDs In addition to one of the most crisply detailed black-and-white transfers you're ever likely to see, disc 1 ofA Canterbury Taleincludes a feature-length commentary by film historian Ian Christie, author of the now out-of-printArrows of Desire(the definitive study of Powell&Pressburger films) and a foremost authority on British films in general. Disc 2 is loaded withCanterburyextras, including a pleasant reminiscence by actress Sheila Sim; a documentary about John Sweet (who is seen visiting Canterbury in 2000, for the first time since filmingA Canterbury Talein 1943); and a charming new documentary that follows contemporary Canterbury "pilgrims" as they revisit locations used in the film. There's also "Listen to Britain," a seven-minute video-installation piece inspired byA Canterbury Taleby artist Victor Burgin (and programmed to loop from start to finish and back again, as it did in museums); and the original "Listen to Britain," by Humphrey Jennings--a classic wartime documentary from the classic era of British non-fiction film that celebrates the sights, and especially the sounds, of rural England in the early 1940s. All in all, these are excellent features that placeA Canterbury Talein evocative historical context.--Jeff Shannon』

The tartness is an eye opener that doesn't leave me buzzing. It works well iced as well, and makes for a great sweet tea base. The orange notes are strong enough to handle sugar or sweetener of choice without being overwhelmed. I've brewed this and taken with me on hikes in the summer and it is very refreshing, especially if I add a sprig or two of fresh mint. Then it tastes like sunshine and summer in a glass!』
(a sweet orage pick-me-up) 『This tea has a wonderful orange aroma and the flavor is very good, without the the slightly bitter notes found in most orange flavored teas. Also, for a caffeine free herbal tea, this one has a very good base flavor and brews quickly. I don't like many herbals because they take too long to brew and/or taste watered down. This makes a nice hot or cold drink and is a great picker upper for those trying to cut out caffeine.』
(I love this tea!) 『I am not a big tea drinker and usually think of herbal tea as having watered down flavor. I had an opportunity to try this tea on a recent trip where they were serving it in the hotel lobby. I was so impressed with it that I wrote down the name and started searching for it when I got home. Not all stores carry it, and some of the stores that do charge a lot for it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it on Amazon. Just an incredibly delicious, soothing tea. Get it!』
(No Surprises Here---Plain Orange Tea) 『**** Tazo's Wild Sweet Orange Herbal Infusion is a nice orange herbal tea. It contains lemongrass, blackberry leaves, citric acid, rose hips, spearmint leaves, natural flavors, orange peel, safflowers, hibiscus flowers, rose petals, natural orange essence, ginger root and licorice root. It is not sweet, very fruity, and not subtle at all, a wonderful tea if you enjoy orange-y teas.
Tazo is an interesting company that makes only super premium teas. They are socially responsible, based in Portland, and have the motto, "The Reincarnation of Tea". Tazo is owned by Starbucks. Their web site is fun and quirky, with a Zen-type focus, definitely worth checking out. It is unclear, though, from their web site, how many of their ingredients are organic or kosher, and they do use some "natural flavors" in their teas--this wording seems a little vague for a super premium tea.
On the paper tea packet, Tazo writes, "a lively blend of sweet citrus herbs and orange essences. Sweet, yet tart, this is a cup of liquid sunshine, radiating multi-layered orange flavors with exotic hints of spice and a distinctive floral finish. Wild, indeed." On their web site, Tazo describes the flavor profile of Wild Sweet Orange as "tart, sweet, smooth, licorice". Tazo describes the aroma as "oranges, roses, lime". This is pretty accurate, although the words give hope that the taste of the tea never quite approaches.
I would rate this tea, and Tazo in general, as good---better than premium teas like Stash or Celestial Seasonings---but not as good as Numi. I'm spoiled by Numi teas, which is why Tazo Wild Sweet Orange gets only four stars. ****』 『Tazo Tea Wild Sweet Orange, Case of 6 - 20 Teabag Boxes (120 Teabags)』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not bad) 『This sounded interesting. It was pretty good, but not my favorite. Maybe the vinegar flavor was a little intense for me. (I'm not a big vinegar fan.) It is very strong flavored, and I can't imagine using the recommended amount. I'm sure some people would like this more than me.』
(Well balanced flavor, with a pretty wide range of use) 『I'll admit right away that I was not expecting this to be a big hit with me. But I was proven wrong. The flavors in the Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Sauce are all very well balanced. I've tried it on everything from a ham sandwich to brats on the grill. I had a couple of misfires (it did not taste good on corned beef hash), but other than that it has brightened (and spiced) up almost everything I tried it on.
The flavors work best when you use the sauce as cold as possible - that way you get the cool and sweet, right before the gentle zing of the chipotle.
The only downside I can think of is the packaging - 6 bottles of this means you'll have it for a LONG time, even when I used it for my review, I only went through half a bottle in a month, this is not the kind of stuff you use like ketchup.』
(Surprisingly Yummy) 『I'm not a super big fan of raspberry flavor, so I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but my husband does love raspberry, so I gave it a go.
I chose to use it on some chicken breast and marinated them in the sauce all day. The chicken smelled delicious when it came out of the oven and my little family of three dug in ravenously.
It was spicy and sweet with just enough raspberry flavor, not at all overbearing. The spice was a bit too much for my three year old, but I just scraped a bit off the top and she wolfed it down after that. The adults enjoyed it very much, enjoying it with rice and a salad. It all went well together and I have used it only on chicken since and we always look forward to it.
I will definitely buy it again and would feel comfortable giving it in a gift basket as well.』
(Great taste!) 『I love this sauce! Great on chicken, fish&I thin it down to use as salad dressing.』
(Sweet and Versatile) 『I'm not much of a cook. I've only used this to dip chicken nuggets in and it's pretty good. The rest of the family likes it too. I would imagine it would make a great marinade.
I recommend it.』 『RazzPotle. In 1996, Fischer&Wieser created The Original Roasted Raspberry Chipotle Sauce. (Absolutely the best liquorice I have ever had!!) 『I love eating strawberry liquorice, laces, and twizzlers. When I happened to find this liquorice I was very surprised by the soft and delicious flavor. There was another brand that I bought the same day and when I tried it minutes after Darrell Lea's, I had to spit it out! If you can find this liquorice, try it... you won't be disappointed! I will never go back to twizzlers.』
(Too good to get often) 『Very soft, very tasty. My only problem is it is too easy to eat them! Once a bag is open it doesn't last long, which isn't so great since there's several servings per bag.』
(Delicious) 『Being a big fan of the australian type licorice, I decided to give this a try. This licorice is awesome. It is extremely soft. It has a great flavor. The packages are the perfect size to break open while sitting around with a couple friends.』
(Ingredient list has changed :() 『Just an FYI for those of us with food allergies who have to read labels very carefully.
Here is what is listed on the website. Wheat Syrup, Raw Sugar, Wheat Flour, Treacle, Modified Food Starch, Palm Oil, Artificial Strawberry Flavor, Citric Acid, Artificial Color (Red Number 40), Soybean Monoglycerides As An Emulsifier, Salt, Licorice Extract.

"Natural Flavor" tends to be either milk or corn based--my daughter has sensitivities to both, so we try to avoid "natural flavor". The original list had only artificial flavorings, which she does all right with.
I'm sure it tastes just as good as every one sounds (I can't try it myself, since I have a cane sugar intolerance), but I'm very disappointed that what I bought is not what I thought I was getting. :(

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (August Happy Birthday Expectations DASHED) 『I really loved my first order and ordered for all my family members out of my area at Christmas. I decided that my birthday would be perfect with my only gift coming from Shatila Foods to myself. This Mixed Phillo Pastries order was a ghastly surprise. By the time the order did get to me, the summer heat had done damage to the order. Most all the anticipated gooey was all over the carton and had seeped out of the plastic and had absorbed all over and into the boxes. I had a big mess on my hands with bubble wrap and all coated in sticky goo and the product was not as pictured 100%. There were a couple of strange rice thread like crunchy types a row of brown and a row of white. The brown tasted like soap. The white didn't taste. the first row were tiny samples of what is pictured and most of them were broken and very dry. The baklava was OK but not sweet. The rest were really dry and some tasted like they were over baked and burnt. The whole box was a disappointment and I couldn't even share it with neighbors for my Birthday. It was an embarrasement. Not the quality I was spoiled with my previous orders. I will not be ordering in the summertime months again if the plastic wrap won't hold the product inside the tray. The inside of the shipping carton was even saturated. I emailed Shatila as soon as it arrived then again 2 weeks later without acknowlegement or response. :(』

(Best Mustard around) 『This is my favorite mustard, and no retailers in my area will stock it. Go figure!』
(The Best!) 『For whatever reason, the grocery stores where I live have suddenly stopped carrying this mustard. I thought French's might have discontinued it again, but I found it was still available online.
Now there's devotion to a mustard for you. I bought 5 bottles online!
I never have cared for regular mustard, which has too sharp a taste, even a little sour or vinegary. My mother knew this mustard growing up, but it disappeared from shelves for many years. When I was a kid, it reappeared in one grocery store in our town; we'd make a special trip just to go get it. That's when it was known as "onion bit mustard" (I still miss the real bits of onions; I guess they don't squeeze out of a plastic bottle).
This mustard does not have a sharp, tangy bite to it like regular yellow mustard. It is, obviously, sweeter and more mild. It's the only mustard I ever use for hot dogs, hamburgers and sandwiches. When I was living in Ireland for a summer, I made my mother mail me a bottle so I could have it with my hot dogs!』
(Great Mustard) 『Wonderful change of pace from regular yellow mustard. I can't find this in my local grocery stores and was glad to find it available online.』

The saw, hammer, ad screw driver are soft enough that he can play with them without our worries, but have a firm shape. He giggles every time we "screw in a screw" on his knee. He also loves the vibrating drill.』
(Fun for both boys and girls.) 『Melissa and Doug's Fill and Spill toolbox is a huge hit with both my granddaughter and grandson, 18 and 20 months of age, respectively. (farm pictures are paper glued onto the wood!!) 『i was very disappointed. we bought this for our 1 year old to practice stacking. he immediately chewed through the cheap paper stickers that are the puzzle pictures. also, the edges of the cubes are VERY sharp and the blocks themselves are pretty hefty. when a stack of them falls, get out of the way or you'll get hurt. overall i would not recommend this product 』
(Poor quality - not what you'd expect from Melissa and Doug) 『My 2 1/2 absolutely loves this puzzle and has no problem putting it together.
However, the construction/quality of this product is horrible. The blocks are too heavy, so be careful if it falls onto a little ones foot. And because they are heavy, they hit together and the stickers are coming off the blocks. I'm so disappointed in this product. It looks like we've had it for years, when we've only had it for a couple months.
This is not one of Melissa&Doug's better puzzles. Don't waste your money.』
(Farm Cube Puzzle) 『Everyone in the family has enjoyed playing with this toy! The pictures are bright and colorful and it is a great, challenging toy.』
(A great puzzle for stimulating thinking, but poor quality!) 『I gave this puzzle a high rating only because of its immense learning value. The quality of the puzzle is diminished because the stickers on each side of the puzzle can easily peel off [its just paper and not painted on], so one has to be very careful in handling the puzzle blocks. On the other hand, the educational value of this puzzle set is very high - young ones can spend quality fun time trying to figure out how to put an animal 'together' [there are six animals in all - pig, chicken, sheep, cow, horse, and duck]. Each puzzle block has six sides and children can learn to manipulate them to put an animal together. A set of pictures on the back of the puzzle box provides a visual cue as to how to piece each animal together.
The puzzle requires quite a bit of higher-order thinking skills and I would recommend this to preschoolers and up.』 『This fun and challenging Farm Cube Puzzle will certainly entertain the kids. Each side of the beautifully illustrated, solid wood cube is part of a different farm animal puzzle - there are six puzzles in all!』

The bathroom set is as depicted, and I was surprised the detail of some of the accessories (for example the soap even has a separate soap dish).
But the pieces such as the toothbrush, shampoo, etc., are really small and are easy to lose, and could swallowed by smaller children.
The Calico Critters products are well crafted, but I fully expect many of the cool tiny pieces to get lost soon enough.』
(Totally, impossibly insanely great toys for little girls) 『The level of detail in the Calico Critters toys I've given my daughter has been astonishing -- THIS is what toys ought to be like! They're utterly precious, very tiny and very, VERY detailed, absolutely wonderful! Expect a difficult time getting the tiny toilet seat cover onto the toilet seat. I was successful after turning it inside-out and then gently working it onto the toilet seat. Be patient and identify the items the stickers are meant for. Some of the stickers are incredibly small, so plan on being patient there, too. But isn't that what being a parent is about? Patience..?
These are DELIGHTFUL toys and worth every single penny. 100% satisfied. 』
(loves it!) 『My daughter (almost 3yo) got this and a few other Calico Critters sets a month ago and I have never seen a child so thrilled for so long. She plays with these for at least an hour or more everyday and although prefers to play with other people, plays by herself with these too. We had to move these toys into a separate room because she was too excited to sleep or eat with them within eyeshot! I have never seen her like this!』
(Our favorite set so far!) 『My four year old daughter loves the calico critters line but our favorite so far is probably this bathroom set. She loves to have them takes baths and go potty and we are amazed at the tiny toothpaste and toothbrush, the little sponge, back scrubber, soap and bottles for the bath and even a bucket with toilet cleaner and brush. this set is not for a child who loves to haul pieces all over the house though. My daughter is pretty good at keeping the pieces in the dollhouse but if she wasn't I would be disappointed because it is such a CUTE set! We really have been delighted with all the calico critters sets we have (about 5 now). They are great products to encourage imagination and role play.』
(The cutest, sturdiest bathroom set just for Calico Critters!) 『I was given this beautiful set a few years ago, and I still treasure it today! Calico Critters look soooo cute sitting in the bathtub, (the little ones especially with their ears sticking out!!). This set should definitely be for older kids because of the small parts like shampoo and rinse bottles, wash brush, perfume, etc. The neat thing about this set is you actually get to stick the labels on almost everything like shampoo, toothpaste etc. Even the toilet seat and lid covers are very nicely made! I would highly reccommend this set to anyone that has any Calico Critters, kids and adults alike! I am almost 12 years old and I still have hours of fun with Calico Critters!!』 『On a cheery carpet of blueberry-blue-and-white gingham, a sparkling porcelain tub stands ready for bathtime. An old-fashioned shower stand sits nearby. The bath tray, resting across the tub, is fully stocked with soap, shampoo, cream rinse, lotion, powder, and perfume bottles for after-bath pampering. A snowy towel is folded at the ready, and a shower curtain on its own stand provides privacy for critters in the buff. (Delightful cookbook, even without photographs) 『This book was such an addictingly delightful read that I couldn't put it down! I read it from cover to cover within an evening. As other reviewers mentioned, this is an unusual cookbook in that it doesn't have photographs at all! In addition, interspersed within the recipes are anecdotes of the author's experience when she explored the various Parisian patisseries. The recipes are sumptuous and as you can imagine of any authentic Parisian pastries, a tad involved. Nevertheless, there are also the relatively simple and delicious ones, such as irresistible Madeleines and crunchy little cookies (Croques).
My favorite part of the book is the little tidbits about how Dorie Greenspan managed to get the different patissiers to part with some of their signature recipes. I also like the hand illustrations of Paris and the patisseries. The drawings are reminiscent of the illustrations by Quentin Blake for Roald Dahl's books. This book will also double as a Parisian guide for gourmands and dessert enthusiasts! Overall, this is an enjoyable, delightful read!』
(Job well done, but could be better) 『Being a big fan of Dorie Greenspan, I bought the book with great expectations. Dorie managed to tell great stories of these Parisian pastry creations at the same time tell her readers how to recreate those experiences.
As usual, the recipes are very detailed with step by step instructions, with pointers following each recipe to make it more unique. I tried many of them, and I'm definitely happy with the end results.
I only wish that there are pictures in the book, helping readers to envision how the end results would be. It'll also help giving pointers on judging whether the results are favorable. I mean, if I had not tasted a Madeleine in my entire life, how can I tell the difference between the real ones with a hump, and those flat ones from Starbucks?』
(Paris Sweets) 『Paris Sweets: Great Desserts From the City's Best Pastry Shops We have been searching and searching for a recipe for Parisian Flan, and in this book we finally found the taste and texture we had been searching for! What a great compilation of Paris delicacies, easy to make and so delicious. Thanks, Doris!!!』
(Vive la France, vive le chocolat!) 『Dorie Greenspan's delightful, mouthwatering tour of Paris's patisseries in Paris Sweets: Great Desserts from the City's Best Pastry Shops is a gastronomic tour though the tempting varieties of French desserts, including cookies, simple cakes, tarts, pastries, more elaborate cakes, and base recipes.
Illustrated with charming pen-and-ink drawings (no photos of finished desserts, unfortunately), Dorie's fascinating backstories on the numerous Parisian bakeries and their signature recipes make for an enjoyable read. Dorie's familiarity with these cafes really lends her an air of authority when discussing the finer points of pastries and ingredients, as does the fact that she's a resident of Paris and not merely a visitor.
The selection of cookies includes delicate hints of citrus and spices such as anise, ground nuts, and classic cookies such as financiers and madeleines. For fans of chocolate, there are several chocolate cakes (pound cake, chocolate almond cake, Grandmother's creamy chocolate cake) and more unusual selections such as the Alsatian Kouglof (the original inspiration for the Bundt pan) and flan.
When I think of Parisian desserts, my first vision is an elegant tart, and Paris Sweets doesn't disappoint. Included are several chocolate tarts, one garnished with apricot jam and ripe bananas, a baked apple tart, and an unusual tea-flavored Tarte Tatin from Mariage Freres. Also included are the custardy fruit tarts, originally from Limousin, known as clafoutis, a whole-lemon tart, a fig-and-citrus tart, and unusual variations such as coffee, strawberry and marshmallow, and darjeeling tarts.
Perhaps the most emblematic of Paris's desserts are its pastries: creme brulee, chocolate mousse, chocolate bread pudding, ali-babas, coffee eclairs, and sumptuous hot chocolate thousands of miles above and beyond lame American Swiss Miss powder imitations. Simple yet elegant, these are described in exacting detail so that even a beginning home cook should feel confident enough to attempt them.
The last section, grand gateaux, covers elaborate, time-consuming cake creations such as Bacchus (golden raisins soaked in rum, three moist, chewy almond and cocoa cake layers, slabs of mousse-like ganache, and a dark chocolate glaze), Opera cake (three layers of almond cake soaked in coffee syrup, a layer of espresso buttercream, a layer of bittersweet chocolate ganache, and topped with chocolate glaze), Chocolate Temptation (a layer cake made from cocoa cake saturated with chocolate syrup and spread with raspberry jam and covered with a bittersweet ganache), Blanc-manger, Kings' Cake (yes, this is probably the origin of the N'Awlins Mardis Gras King Cake since it was served at Epiphany and similarly contains a hidden trinket), and Mille-feuille (layered puff pastry filled with pastry cream).
Base recipes include pastry creams (almond, vanilla), pate sucree (sweet tart dough), and puff pastry. Also included is a brief source guide (snail mail and URLs) and the addresses of all cafes and patisseries mentioned in Paris Sweets. Thoughtfully, recipes are given in Imperial and Metric measurements (supplies, ingredients, and oven temperatures). Most include ingredients that are easy enough to find if you happen to live near a well-stocked grocery store, or better yet, a Williams-Sonoma. Like with any dessert, you will want to use the best chocolate you can afford (Cluizel is always a solid choice), since baking won't improve the quality of the raw ingredients.
The end result of Paris Sweets are deceptively simple desserts that will transport you to the narrow streets and aged facades of Paris's historic patisseries. Even if you never make a single recipe, Dorie's writing is a rewarding journey by itself, especially with a steaming bowl of cafe au lait as you flip through this gem of a cookbook. 』 『Dorie Greenspan's most vivid memory of her first trip to Paris doesn't have anything to do with the Eiffel Tower, but rather a heavenly strawberry tartlet. Overwhelmed by its extraordinary flavor, texture, and appearance, Greenspan was "hooked on Paris and hooked on the city's sweets."Paris Sweetsis the result of 30 years of searching for the most delectable, delicious, awe-inspiring pastries she could find, and then convincing their creators to part with the recipes.
Scattered throughout this delightful book are whimsical illustrations and beautifully written stories about each of Greenspan's favorite pastry shops and the chefs who created them. Some of their recipes, such as Boulangerie Poilane's sweet, buttery, bite-size cookies called Punishments, are quick and easy enough for even a novice baker. And with Greenspan's clear, step-by-step, detailed instructions, Robert Linxe's Grandmother's Creamy Chocolate Cake, an elegant fudgy decadence, and Poujauran's rich, nutty-flavored Financiers, become child's play. Greenspan manages to demystify even the complicated multilayered Opera Cake from Dalloyau.
From the most perfect Crème Brulee and Coffee Eclairs to the stunning Fresh Strawberry and Marshmallow Tart, made with homemade strawberry marshmallows, Greenspan will have you torn between makingParis Sweetsat home and going there yourself. And in case you can do both, she's included all the addresses you need.--Leora Y. Bloom』
『The prize-winning author ofBaking with Julia(more than 350,000 copies sold), among other cookbook classics, celebrates the sweet life with recipes and lore from Paris's finest patisseries. Like most lovers of pastry and Paris, Dorie Greenspan has always marveled at the jewel-like creations displayed in bakery windows throughout the City of Light. Now, in a charmingly illustrated tribute to the capital of sweets, Greenspan presents a splendid assortment of recipes from Parisâs foremost pastry chefs in a book that is as transporting to read as it is easy to use.
An elegant gift for Francophiles, armchair travelers, bakers of all skill levels, and certainly for oneself,Paris Sweetsbrings home a taste of enchantment.』

(Really Super) 『I loved this book and felt sad that Harris is so successful with her other series that this book will remain a single. I love her writing and if you love her way with words, this won't disappoint. Well, let me say I'm not a Sookie fan and her Harper Connelly is getting a bit to perverted for me. So, if you want that kind of madness, this may bore you. But if you loves her Teagarden series and her Shakespeare series, you'll like this. The characters are solid and the story is complex enough to be interesting. I fear that Sookie and Harper will win out and those of us who just like some good writing without a lot of blood and sexual perversion will be left aside. Charlaine if you're reading, please get another promo head shot.』
(Dragging, boring, annoying...) 『I guess as a debut novel this isn't bad but it's by no means a good book. The main character has no hooks to endear herself to the reader. There's no real story to her, she's just barely above one dimensional. The rest of the cast is trotted out on a one by one "Wait, is THIS the killer?!" basis. The story starts nowhere and really goes nowhere. There's a killing, there's another, there's two in the past. Gasp! Are they all related?! With the exception of a couple short stories and her second novel (waiting on the nightstand as I type) I've read and enjoyed everything Ms Harris has written except this. If you're a completest, go for it, you might as well read everything. Otherwise, give this one a pass, it's not that good. 』
(Love Charlaine Harris!) 『If you haven't started reading Charlaine Harris - you should! If you like this book, try the Sookie Stackhouse, Harper Connelly, Aurora Teagarden, and Lily Bard series! These books are great - entertaining and smart, and they flow very easily from one to the next, leaving you wanting more.
I can't believe I just "found" Charlaine Harris last year! :)』
(How well do you know your neighbors, really?) 『Catherine Scott Linton has moved back to Lowfield, Mississippi. Her parents died in a car accident on their way to visit her at her first job. She's now working for the local paper and building walls to keep everyone out of her life -- passing time feeling guilty. Then one morning she finds a body. In the horror and chaos, Catherine didn't recognize the dead woman, who turns out to be her father's nurse of thirty years. Now, she's convinced that her parents' accident was no accident at all -- but why would someone kill the town doctor, his wife, and his nurse. Catherine is determined get to the bottom of this mystery.
The story unfolds slowly as we met the characters that Catherine does interact with. Slowly, we come to know that Catherine is not a shrinking violet but a modern woman a bit embarrassed by her unthinking prejudices. But, she is a daughter that loved her parents and misses them with a depth that I think many of us can understand. All her reactions seem subdued and a bit off-kilter but that's because we've been brainwashed by movies and TV. When you stop and think of it -- how would you react to finding a body in an abandoned house in mid-summer Mississippi -- one that had been bludgeoned to death. Catherine is every woman who has had to deal with circumstances outside her generally expected experiences. Harris brings us a character, who is strong and believable in her depression, anger, and the uncertainty whether what is wanted is justice or vengeance.
The conclusion is a shock for the character as well as the reader. Murder is a crime that often seems necessary to the perpetrator but an outsider looking at it sees other avenues that could have achieved the same result.
For fans of Harris' Southern Vampire and Grave... series, this stand alone is far less humor, but the same deft touch with characterization, setting, and plot. You can smell the hot dusty air and feel the tension build with every chapter.』 『Now best known for her New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse novels, Charlaine Harris hit "a home run the first time out" (Birmingham News) with the story of a murder that embroils a small-town reporter in mystery that hits close to home...
Catherine Linton has returned to her hometown of Lowfield, Mississippi, unconvinced that the death of her parents in a car crash six months earlier was an accident. And her suspicions are confirmed when she stumbles upon the dead and beaten body of her doctor-father's longtime nurse. There are secrets being kept in Lowfield. And the town where Catherine grew up may be the same place where she is sent to her grave...』

Whether they have any intention of being an inventor or not, this book is sure to encourage them to follow their dreams. There are not enough books like this one that are written for vibrant, curious young women.』
(Great examples of practical inventions done by women) 『I was expecting to read about Maria Curie or Lisa Meitner. Instead it was a book about seems ordinary women (and girls!) who contributed in very practical fields like inventing windshield wipers, snugli, computer compilers or chocolate chip cookies. The book explains well that women had to go through much more hardship than men to be able to go through the experimental phase of their inventions. For instance Patsy O. Sherman who invented the Scotchguard was not even allowed in the textile mills.... to supervise the product production. 』
(Aunt for neice) 『I bought this based on other reviews for my soon to be 8 year old neice. I read it and she is going to love it. Very excited to promote the old the idea of "girl power" because there is still gender bias in the classrooms and peer pressure.』
(The best book ever) 『This book was the best book I have read so far on my summer reading book list. It was very interesting to me. It is the best subject to write a book on. I had the best time reading it. I think that people could have more confidence to invent something after reading this book, even men.』
(Book of Interest) 『This book allowed me to share stories of inventions by women with my students. Girls often feel left out of the "science of invention", this book allows them to relate to accomplishments in a field where girls often don't relate to the material presented.』 『In kitchens and living rooms, in garages and labs and basements, even in converted chicken coops, women and girls have invented ingenious innovations that have made our lives simpler and better. Their creations are some of the most enduring (the windshield wiper) and best loved (the chocolate chip cookie). What inspired these women, and just how did they turn their ideas into realities?』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Beautiful Watch!) 『I love this watch! It's gorgeous! The only thing that is less-than-great about it is that the display should have more contrast. I need to turn the backlight on to read the black-on-gold display at light levels significantly higher than with my watches that have black-on-gray displays.
