After trying many foods on two dogs, Wellness has stopped that. It must be the natural ingredients because when I've tried "supermarket brands" they go back to scratching again. Thanks, but I'll just stick with this. Coats are shiny, even after swimming and mud baths. It's expensive compared to "supermarket brands" but a bargain compared to other holistic dog foods and the vet bills we used to have! Many years ago, we started feeding it to our black lab and he showed significant improvement in a couple of days. After he died, (he was 14) we eventually got a golden retriever pup and tried him on the cheaper food but he showed the same signs of scratching and dull coat. We put him on Wellness and all symptoms cleared up quickly.』

(The best food!) 『I was concerned about the effect "regular" dog food was having on our dogs. We have one puppy and one senior, so both are in crucial stages. The puppy had bad dandruff and dull, course hair while the senior had various issues throughout his life including seizures and IBD. I decided to try a home cooked diet for them but after the pup developed an allergy I was scared to try anything else on my own. We decided to try Wellness after some research on the natural brands (not to mention a taste test with samples from Pet People).
This food has done WONDERS. The pup no longer has dandruff and his coat is shiny and silky. His energy level is also through the roof. Our older dog has always been a veeery picky eater, sometimes going a couple days in between meals if it wasn't appetizing enough for him, but he loves the Wellness food and even eats it dry! No canned mix-ins necessary! Since he started eating it we haven't seen any IBD symptoms and he's acting a lot younger.
I wholeheartedly recommend this food, or at least another brand of natural food. Here is the Largo from"Winter"only it is played on panpipes by the New Age artist Zamfir. The sound is hauntingly beautiful. There is a sonata for flute and harp by Bach, the biggest name in the period and Vivaldi's"L'Estro Armonico"as well as Telemann's Suite in A for Recorder. One particular piece I enjoy and think you will too is the melodic and elegant Concerto Grosso No. 12 by Handel, the slow movement Larghetto E Piano. It is sheer tonal beauty. There is more concertos by Vivaldi, whose use of the flute is always very reflective and dreamy and even a solo aria from a motet of his, the soprano Elly Ameling sings"Nulla In Mundo Pax", a lyrical-coloratura showcase which crowns and concludes this gorgeous album.』

("You shouldn't kiss a girl when you're wearing that gun... leaves a bruise") 『Filled with tart one-liners and sharp performances, MURDER, MY SWEET (aka "Farewell, My Lovely") is a good example of just how sublime film noir could be with the RKO Studios. Most people tend to regard Warner Brothers as the house of choice when it came to noir, but RKO cranked out some real doozies, too.
Dick Powell forever shed his wholesome, goody-goody image when he played hard-boiled Detective Philip Marlowe. Hired to track down the ex-wife of nutty stand-over man Moose Malloy (Mike Mazurki), Marlowe's trail later leads him into an altogether more puzzling case involving a priceless jade necklace, the sultry second wife of a millionaire (Claire Trevor) and her lovely stepdaughter (Anne Shirley).
MURDER, MY SWEET is a complete ride from beginning to end. Although the plot is downright convuluted and confusing, the film is compelling largely because of Powell's performance and the snappy screenplay of John Paxton (based on the original novel by Raymond Chandler).
Audiences would have forever pegged Dick Powell for his tap-happy roles in Busby Berkeley musicals like "42nd Street" had the character of Marlowe not come along and allowed a new side of his incredible acting range to shine through. He's remarkable in this movie. Likewise this film also established radiant ingenue Anne Shirley (from "Anne of Green Gables" and "Stella Dallas") in a sophisticated new light, although her career sadly ended with this film. Claire Trevor, that perennial film noir femme fatale, doesn't disappoint.

(Noir with an endearing sense of nerdiness.) 『As far as film noir goes, this is it. The contradiction of Raymond Chandler's gritty gumshoe Philip Marlowe comes across at the hands of Dick Powell far more easily than it did with either Bogart or Mitchum (who was in a remake of this film, years later). Powell's performance of the detective is lighter than others, and though he certainly doesn't evoke the feelings of menace that other actors do, I can't imagine anyone but him playing hopscotch with the tiles of a stately home.
Mike Mazurki's turn as Moose Malloy is fabulous - a real-life ex-wrestler turned meathead-for-hire-under-false-pretences. If you want a great strangulation, he's the man.
So why only three stars? As a film this is a beautiful work - the opening shots of a blindfolded Marlowe, appearing as if in front of a firing squad, are gorgeous. There's a lot of expertly-crafted noir stereotypical setups here. But the story seems particularly convoluted, and to not hang together too well. It's forgiveable in a book where your mind fills in the blanks, but on the screen it seems that something is lacking. It definitely helps if you've read Chandler's original before tackling this one.
One thing that could be a spoiler but isn't but sort of is: watch out for the drug scene. It's one of the most breathtakingly good:bad pieces of acting and camerawork I've seen. It's so close to genius and failure at once that its inclusion makes viewing of this film necessary.』
(Confusing,But Love Those Wiscracks!) 『This is considered one of the classic film noirs ever made and some think THE film noir. In recognizing that before I had seen it, perhaps I was disappointed because I expected more. Yet, I still own this DVD and enjoy watching it about every 4-5 years. Why? Probably the cinematography and "Phillip Marlowe's" dialog.
What I found was a very confusing film, at least in the last third of the movie as everything started to be explained. It almost got ridiculous in the last 10 minutes when Dick Powell ("Marlowe") explained the whole story. He talked too fast and it was next to impossible to follow. I guess I will have to view this more often to understand it better, or find someone who can explain it for my feeble brain.
The best part of the film was the cinematography, which really comes to life on the DVD. Someone did a very nice job restoring this print for this disc. That, and the general dialog by Powell, were fascinating. You could make a short book with all the wise-guy remarks made by "Marlowe" in this film - a lot of great stuff.

I stopped chewing sugarless bubble gum (of all things) and within 3 weeks, all my symptoms were gone. Many people find this hard to believe, until they do the research for themselves. This information can be easily found on the internet. Thousands and thousands of people have been sickened by Aspartame. You can even shut the sound off and watch the light, shadow, form, line, etc. With the sound on you will hear music and sound highly appropriate to each scene....especially the dialogue. The acting, casting, actors, etc....fantastic. To bad we in American rarely make a great movie....we just keep turning out crap.』
(Don't expect The Wife of Bath) 『This is another of those movies I caught on late-night TV, and eventually ended up buying.
In some ways it kind of reminds me of Rudyard Kipling's "Kim". There's not really a plot, as such, there's just people who come together for a while, do their thing, and part.
A couple of things make it clear this is a WWII propaganda film made to encourage wartime Anglo-American friendship and understanding: Sgt Johnson impresses the locals with his knowledge of lumber, and then goes on to slam isolationists who oppose the Lend Lease program. At the end he is completely overwhelmed by the glory of Canterbury Cathedral, but remains proud of his small rural church back in Oregon.
What else to say. Well, Kent is laid out in all its glory. I lived in the UK for a couple of years in the mid 1980's, and got to travel all over, including to Kent. Seeing the hop gardens, drying sheds, and the manicured British countryside brought a nostalgic lump to my throat.
Great movie. I think I'm going to go on a Criterion Collection WWII movie buying spree.』
(A Treasure of a Film) 『A CANTERBURY TALE is an enchanting film from British filmmakers, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. The film takes place during the height of World War II and originally served as a propaganda tool for the British Ministry of Information. But underneath the exterior of the film, there is a deep underlying meaning of revisiting and taking a pilgrimage to the past in order to understand the present.
Powell and Pressburger invoke British romanticism and spiritualism that is clearly shown with the shadow and light essence of the film that is exceptionally conveyed and characterized through the cinematography. Undeniably, the beautiful English countryside and village landscape offers a quaintness and familiarity that echoes home in terms of American versus British identity, which is seen and heard in the conversations between American G.I., Sgt. Bob Johnson (John Sweet) and British soldier, Sgt. Peter Gibbs (Dennis Price) as they speak atop a grassy hill as well as throughout the film. Also, there is a complex subplot that involves Alison Smith (Sheila Sim) who served in the British Women's Land Army and the town's Magistrate, Thomas Colpepper (Eric Portman), which is ambiguously portrayed.
Overall, THE CANTERBURY TALE is indeed on the list of thought-provoking films. It subtly recants Chaucer's original tale, but it is an original Powell and Pressburger production that that resonates the history of England. This is definitely a film that should be viewed more than once.』

The battle of the village boys remains the high point, but the entire film resonates the director's love for his native Kent countryside. The amateur American actor gives the interplay among the characters a decided contrast and conveniently served to mark the differences between the American and the British. The cinematography was as natural as ever with this team's films. Criterion offers this as a set of two CDs. Good as the extras are, they end up raising the price to the point I fear very few people will give this film a look. Too bad. 39.99 is is a pretty steep toll for a film most Americans will be taking a chance on. But the quality is certainly first class, so those buying the CD will have as fine a version as possible.』

I love some of Michael Powell's films -- some I'm lukewarm about -- I love this one. A CANTERBURY TALE is quite lovely. It's not quite perfect -- don't be put off by the little "glue man" mystery -- it's a device -- and it works in the overall plot. These actors are superb, and the film is a moving tribute to England and her people during the darkest days of WW II. I cannot say enough about how beautiful it is. Be sure to watch the special features and read the essays in the booklet that all make up this very special DVD package. Don't miss this one.

Originally conceived as good-natured propaganda to support the British-American alliance of World War II, the film became something truly special in the hands of the Archers (a.k.a. writer/director/producers Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger). While I haven't made all of the recipes in the book, I can attest that the peach cobbler recipe is perfect. Some recipes require you to add a little extra sugar, butter, etc. This recipe is perfect as it is. This one has some excellent recipes that are not the usual fare as well as some short cuts that make the tasks much easier. The author doesn't assume that one knows the basics (as do some other books) and explains the reasons that require specific steps. A very good book for the novice and intermediate cooks who want to expand their range.』
(Easy-To-Follow Preserve Recipes) 『I got this book for my wife, because she had expressed interest in making jams and jellies. Since I am interested in foods and food preparation, I also read the book, to get a background on the subject. Neither my wife nor I had much knowledge of preserves before reading this book.
The book begins by explaining the basics of preserving (types of preserves, a history of preserving, how to preserve, and troubleshooting). Then, Ziedrich lists various recipes, sorted by fruit (including some less common ones such as Huckleberry, Quince, and Ground Cherry). These recipes include syrups, jams, preserves, "butters," nectars, pastes, and more. Along with the recipes, Ziedrich includes a history and analysis of the various fruits. Some of the recipes strike me as more common, such as strawberry jam, and others, more creative, such as Crabapple-Geranium jelly, which means there is enough variety in this book to satisfy a variety of tastes.
My wife tells me that the recipes are easy to follow, and Ziedrich provides clear, step-by-step, instructions, which are important to those that are new to preserving. The recipes we tried turned out well, and tasted great. The only drawback to making jams and other preserves is that they call for lots of sugar, and my wife and I have tried to cut white sugar out of our diets, which means most of these recipes will end up being prepared as gifts for friends. While these recipes are apparently lower in sugar than those in other books, sugar still makes up a major part of the recipes (such is the nature of preserves).
Overall, I recommend this book for someone who wants to have a nice, and easy-to-follow, collection of preserve recipes.』
(Not my favorite in category) 『This book has many recipes for jams and preserves. The strong suit of the book is the breadth of the recipes, and the simplicity of them. Unfortunately, I find the book does not compare at all with Blue Ribbon Preserves, by Linda Amendt. Amendt's book goes into far more depth about the tools and techniques, and how to take preserves to a new level, and I also find that Amendt's directions are much more explicit.
As a result, I find that I use this book as an idea generator, but I turn to Amendt when it is time to execute.』
(Brilliant low sugar recipes make preserving fun again) 『I've been preserving for over 15 years now and I've probably collected half a dozen preserving books; most of which feature beautifully photographed jams and jellies on every other page, because I thought I'd need pictures to inspire me. The Joy of Jams, Jellies and Other Sweet Preserves (TJJetc) proved to be inspirational with none of that. In fact, in the four months since I've gotten it, I've been preserving nonstop on the weekends (much to the exasperation of my dh, LOL, who is sick of that stockpot always cluttering up the stove). Guess what all of my friends and family will be getting for Christmas this year :D ?
The way I see it, the trouble with the same-old same-old preserving recipes is, you can find most of them already in the grocery store. Strawberry jam, raspberry jam, grape jelly, yawn!! Never fear, TJJetc does have these in case you just need a basic jam or jelly. But while you're taking the trouble of hauling out your jars, lids and rings, why not try something exotic? This Autumn, I've made:
Caramel Apple jam Fig jam (a favorite) Fig and Peach jam Orange jelly Quince jelly Banana jam (with a naughty hint of rum) Strawberry syrup (rave reviews on that one from my pancake lovin' family..real sugar really is better than corn syrup!) Quince paste (a European delicacy to eat with cheese) Pear Preserves in syrup with ginger Cranberry preserves Feijoa jam
There are so many more to be tried this spring, I can't wait for my peaches and plums to start ripening.
As others have mentioned, these recipes rely less on sugar than most traditional recipes. I like that. Even better, none of them call for commercial pectin. The author explains how to coax out the natural pectins in your ingredients: some, such as raspberries, will set quite nicely with little time or effort. In the introduction she provides a chart which lists which fruits are high, medium or low in pectin and acid, and how the recipes are manipulated so that you can take advantage of that for really fresh tasting jams and jellies with minimal cooking time. Brilliant!
