(Nice Story)
(Another Barbie Movie)
(great movie) The seller was prompt as the product arrived on time. It was in very good condition just as advertised. My daughter is very happy especially with the bonus DVD which came with the product. I bought this DVD, because I love 3D shows. But you know it won't be same as the ones I have seen in the theaters. It is far from them. Maybe you have to watch in a dark room. The glasses don't stay right because they are paper and uncomfortable. Maybe you can find better glasses from stores or some where. They are even big for my 5 years old girl. Not all the scens are 3D. So you get to take your glasses off most of the times which gives you break. You have the option to watch it without 3D effects. The movie itself is really nice and appropriate for any age. Actually adults will like it too. But it was worth buying it. My little girl love this movie. Nice story of love and adventure, not as complicated as Mermaidia and Fairytopiah. I tried using the 3-D glasses but of course it will only work on a real dark room. My 4 year old grand daughter is just thrilled to get this movie. She has already watched it at least a dozen times. I think it was worth every penny. The shipper was great, no problems at all. This was a fun, clean movie with great value lessons. It works for all ages, 2 and up! Barbie takes flight in her first original princess fairy tale movie Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus.Princess Annika (Barbie) discovers adventure when she is befriended by Brietta - a magnificent winged horse - that flies her to the beautiful Cloud Kingdom. Annika has only three days to break the spell of Wenlock and evil wizard who has turned her family to stone. On her quest to defeat Wenlock Annika meets new friends and together they travel to forbidden forests skate through icy caverns and fly above the clouds as they attempt to build a magical wand of light. The movie includes 15 minutes of spectacular 3-D scenes and the score includes soaring themes from Beethoven's Sixth Symphony.System Requirements: Running Time 85 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: CHILDREN/FAMILY Rating: NR UPC: 031398179788 Manufacturer No: 17978 Rerations < Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus >

(Took me back in time)
(The best collection of songs!)
(My toddler LOVES this...and I don't mind it, either. :))
(Sesame Street - What's the Name of That Song) My 23 month old loves this video. She hums the title track all day long. She even like to cover which is a book with the lyrics for 6 of the songs featured on the video. I bought this video for my daughter after a family member of mine sang "What's the name of that song" to my daughter. It reminded me of when I was a child&bought it so we could enjoy something together that I had enjoyed as a child. Its adorable&my daughter (2) loves it&no sings along.
My 23 month old loves Ernie's "Do dee duck" song so thats what I got this DVD for. However, we quickly realized that its a great collection and our daughter enjoys all the other songs. She would point to the TV and say "La Di Da" whenever she wanted to hear it again. After a few weeks, she has even started singing a few of the songs word for word, (including actions). The singers are awesome and Patty's "ABC song" is awesome.
The story line is very simple - Grover sets off to find the one song that everyone can sing and Elmo and Big Bird help in the quest. In the end, they realize that everyone can sing their own favorite song and that makes the world more interesting and fun. So there's a nice message for the kids.
This movie is a great attention getter for my toddler. It is the one video we have that captures his attention from beginning to end. And I don't mind the music, so it's not a bad choice for the not-so-background sounds. He dances along, claps to it, smiles and laughs...it's definitely his favorite. There are great songs and a mix of puppet characters and people singing. My two year old loves this movie. We have a couple Sesame Street DVD and this is the best. And since I have to watch it also, it helps that I love it too! One electrifying hour ofSesame Streetmusic and magic commemorates its 35th anniversary in this collection of 17 classic songs paired with a star-studded guest list. Superhero Grover provides the thematic storyline for musical merriment as he embarks on a mission to discover the "one special song the world can sing together." It's a difficult task since everyone in theSesame Streetcast has an opinion. Beginning with the opening number, "Sing" (which gives cameos to Ben Stiller, Conan O'Brien, the Dixie Chicks, and more), the tunes come in rapid succession along with the usual bantering and balderdash of Kermit, Oscar, and the gang. There is no shortage of hilarity, whether watching Wayne Brady sing "Between" sandwiched inthe middle of Big Bird and Snuffy; or Queen Latifah belt a rap rendition of "That's the Letter O." It is no wonder thatSesame Streetremains timeless with such servings of exquisite entertainment targeted at youngsters yet enjoyed by all. (Vanessa did it again!)
(Another great album.)
(A Must Purchase)
(Songs get better towards the end) When i first heard a song by Vanessa Carlton i was pulled in&swept away,&happy to be! It is just like the kind of rapture experienced when rolling in the wind and waves on the ocean with much solitude and inner reflection. And the magic stays&grows,&even when i think i'm not in the mood i can put in a CD and i'm home again, and home is where the heart is. Heroes&Thieves (Vanessa's third CD) succeeds in returning to the candid and intimate pictures Vanessa can paint with words and piano as she did on "Be Not Nobody"(the first CD). These songs are the stories of a young woman expressed in lyrical poetry. I became a nessie quickly, while some folk grow into it. Nessies do not need an explanation, and will own all three CD's, but for others i say i find the tunes endearing and enduring. Even exiting, ethereal&evergreen. Vanessa can work a-cappella but it's fabulous how she and the orchestra complement each other just perfectly. In fact, the dubbing, mixing, and back-up singers energizes these tunes even more. The debut CD "Be Not Nobody" remains the favorite for me, but the last two CD's are equally enjoyable too. On the debut CD, Vanessa makes "Paint it Black" all her own&the Indian Sitar/Raga ambiance is brilliant. Vanessa's music rises above the average, has a mystical, kind of sacred-gospel feeling from the piano and a honey-sweet voice. Carol King could also do this. And i'm also reminded of the spirituality of the Van Morrison songs. The wistful and planitiff moods of Vanessa's intonations allow the listener to follow his or her own interpretations. At the end of Heroes&Thieves,if you wait about ten seconds, you can hear a little dog bark. Why? Why not? Be Not Nobody:-) Awesome CD! her songs are so different of what you heard and they wake up your soul. I bought this cd and I fall in love with it. Will always be one of my favorites. Don't listen to the bad reviews people give to this cd, they just don't understand and see the songs like the people that love her see it. If you have ever liked Vanessa, you will probably love this. It's another album showing her growth as an artist. It has a few very poppy songs, but the rest are relaxing. I love the piano music, definitely my favorite part. I really like the second half of the cd, especially "Home" and "More than This". I really like the message in "More than This". Look up the lyrics.
She's not very mainstream, and you don't hear her often on the piano. I don't care though, she has a wonderful sound that some people can't enjoy. I'd prefer good songs with meaning over the crap on the radio every day. Carlton's third album, Heroes&Thieves, blew me away from the first single. Far less mainstream than Harmonium, Heroes&Thieves returns to the heartbreaking modesty of Be Not Nobody. Single-worthy songs appear at every turn, every one of which is a beautiful combination of lyricism and instrumentals. A wonder to listen to again and again. A great enchanting album. Starts off slow and normal but as i got closer to the end of the CD, i began to enjoy it even more....only for the CD to end...wish there were more songs in the album but none the less, definitely worth the investment for a great album to enjoy Three time Grammy nominated artist whose hits include "A Thousand Miles", "Ordinary Day" and "White Houses" returns with her brand new album Heroes&Thieves, featuring the hit single "Nolita Fairytale." customer 's review (Mike Leigh Embraces the Roller Coaster of Life...)
(Vintage Leigh)
(A top 10 classic....)
(Recommended)
(CLASSIC SLICE OF MIDDLE-CLASS BRITISH LIFE.) The story focuses on a family that lives in the outskirts of London where they try to make the most of the life. Andy, the father, works as a supervisor for a large kitchen and he hates his job. Andy is a dreamer that often does not get things done, but always starts countless new tasks as he has aspirations to start something new. The mother, Wendy, works as a clerk in a small boutique that sells children's clothing and she teaches physical education in an elementary school. Through a friend of the family she gets a night job as a waitress in a French gourmet restaurant in order to help the friend to get back on his feet.
Wendy and Andy do what they can to make life tolerable and enjoyable. They make the most of the ups and laugh at the downs. Together Andy and Wendy have raised a pair of twins that are now twenty-something, Natalie and Nicola. The positive Natalie is a hard working plumber who has inherited her hard working attitude from her mother, and she acquired her father's visionary skills as she aspires to go to the United States. Nicole is the opposite of Natalie as she is exceedingly pessimistic, introspective, bulimic, nervous, depressed, and unemployed.
Wendy and Andy's daughters, friends, and self-imposed friends brings them joy and misery. Together they display an intriguing resilience to deal with the issues that trouble them through a positive, loving, and sometimes joking attitude. Their knowledge of life is great as they do not worry over things they cannot control, but they are fully aware that they can control their own feelings towards life whether it is good or bad. Natalie and Nicole become an allegorical example for the good and bad times as they are opposites, and the parents embrace both.
Life is Sweet brings "life" to the audience through the family that experiences both ups and downs. Mike Leigh's creative direction brings the cast together to rehearse before establishing the script. These rehearsals often contain improvisation and suggestions from the cast which results in a unique cinematic experience with characters offering great depth. Leigh truly displays skill and ambition to work in a team atmosphere in order to bring out the absolute best from each individual. The outcome from the teamwork is an excellent cinematic experience as it feels both genuine and it offers some valuable lessons to the audience.
Although I always enjoyed his films, I never fully appreciated Mike Leigh until I heard his commentary on All or Nothing. Since then, I think I have been able to see Leigh for what he is: An incredibly gifted storyteller. I no longer feel the need to search his movies for some overblown message or statement, but rather just allow myself to enter into the lives of the intriguing characters he presents to us, walk with them on their journey, and learn with them as they learn about themselves.Life is Sweet is generally lighter fare than, say, his much later Secrets and Lies or All or Nothing, but it is no less compelling. The main characters are well-sketched, their humorous idiosyncracies never quite overstepping the mark into caricature (apart from some of the supporting characters, perhaps), and given enough depth and complexity to avoid the impression that Leigh is patronizing towards them (in a way that a lesser storyteller, such as Willy Russell, often appears). Life is Sweet is very funny, very warm, but also very human and poignant, with a few moments of grittiness. The ensemble of actors, including Jim Broadbent, Alison Steadman and (a very young) Timothy Spall deliver superb performances. Rachel Portman's score veers between the playful and the melancholy, reflecting (creating?) the tone of the film. In the early '90s when LIFE IS SWEET was released, the film made the top 10 lists of film critics everywhere, including Siskel and Ebert, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, and the San Francisco Chronicle. So why hasn't this film made it to DVD??LIFE IS SWEET is the story of a set of twin teenage girls played by Claire Skinner and Jane Horrocks. You'll recognize Claire and Jane if you're a BBC/PBS fan. Claire played a chef-in-training on 'Chef' and a lady cop on 'Second Sight'. Jane Horrocks is LITTLE VOICE and I believe she played 'Bubbles' in 'Absolutely Fabulous'. Alison Steadman plays the mother in LIFE IS SWEET and she played Mrs. Bennett in 'Pride and Prejudice' (the most recent version with Colin Firth). Claire and Jane play their parts so well it is hard to believe they aren't real identical twins--even though they play very different characters. The first time I saw this film I thought the same girl was playing both roles (as did Hayey Mills in the 'Parent Trap'). The supporting cast includes many familiar faces including Jim Broadbent, whom I first noticed in 'Widow's Peake' though he also starred in the Gilbert and Sullivan film Mike Leigh produced a few years ago. LIFE IS SWEET is a story of teenage angst in an English working class family. One of the twins, Nicola (played by Jane Horrocks), has a problem with food. She starves herself when others are around and then gorges and purges in private (anorexia nervosa?). When Nicola and her boyfriend have sex she insists they do it with chocolate. Nicola dreams of taking her life beyond the narrow working-class world she inhabits. The other twin, played by Claire Skinner works as a plumber. She appears to be a practical and level-headed youngster, the kind most desired in traditional homes. Mike Leigh's best films, including LIFE IS SWEET, are stories about working-class youngsters coming of age (SECRETS AND LIES, CAREER GIRLS, MEANTIME). These tales involve the arrival of the protagonist at a new level of awareness and personal resolution following a period of less than enthusiastic participation in a"hostile"world. In the end, Nicola finds her place in the world she inhabits and that life is sweet. Unlike with novelists or musicians, I don't often follow the work of particular directors. But Mike Leigh is an exception. His ability to bring out the best in actors--or his willingness to let them alone to do their best--and then form all the performances into a cohesive movie seems amazing to me. But he not only has confidence in his actors; he has confidence in his audience as well. What results are movies on a human scale, intelligent and revealing. "Life Is Sweet," like "Secrets and Lies," is one of Leigh's more commercial efforts (as opposed to, say, "Naked"). But "Life" is much lighter and funnier. In this story, there are also family secrets, and difficulties and disappointments, but it never strays far from its title argument: that after all, life IS sweet. Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge, Topsy-Turvy) and Alison Steadman (Pride and Prejudice, Abigail's Party, and Leigh's real-life wife) play Andy and Wendy, a middle-class suburban English couple. They're loving and hardworking parents, but still young enough themselves to dissolve into laughing fits on the sofa or tease each other to their horror of their daughters. Andy produces his own minor crisis when his self-employment ambitions take the form of a ratty refreshments van, sold to him by a hilariously untrustworthy Stephen Rea. At the same time, Wendy takes on yet another part-time job when she offers to waitress at a friend's new restaurant--an episode so filled with Timothy Spall's manic efforts that it really defies words. But the real story in "Life Is Sweet" centers around Andy and Wendy's twin daughters, in their early twenties. Natalie, played by Claire Skinner (Almost Strangers, Naked) is the calm, dry center of the family storm. It's a tribute to Skinner that Natalie remains so likeable and watchable throughout the movie, given that she rarely changes expression or inflection. But within the family dynamics, her character is absolutely understandable. Not so much the calm center is Nicola, the other twin. Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Absolutely Fabulous) turns in another astonishing performance as a young woman paralyzed by her own myriad and mostly nameless fears. You desparately want Nicola to reach out for help, even at the same time you find her infuriating or hilarious. Bolstering the leads are David Thewlis, as Nicola's bizarre daytime visitor, and, as mentioned before, Timothy Spall and Stephen Rea. To measure Spall's versatility, compare his performance here with "Secrets and Lies." And Rea is always great; here he manages to be both slightly menacing and completely hapless. With this kind of acting, and Leigh's deft hand with loving slices-of-life, there's very little to dislike about this movie. Director/writer Mike Leigh's working methods are, by now, legendary. He customarily gathers his hand-chosen cast well before filming begins to flesh out characters on their own based on his outline of events and then encourages improvisation to allow the performer to inhabit the character, rather than a stock, lifeless portrayal. The actors aren't the only ones to benefit from this theatre-like approach to filmmaking; Leigh's core audiences eagerly await each entry to his already estimable canon with great anticipation. While SECRETS AND LIES is more dramatic and TOPSY TURVY more cinematic, for me LIFE IS SWEET is the most memorable of his films. Perhaps its the sweet, world-weary musical score from the wonderful Rachel Portman. Or the concentration on just a few days in the lives of a working-class British family and their small circle of friends. Not to mention the miraculous performances of Jane Horrocks as the anguished Nicola--half of a twin sister set (the sublimely droll Claire Skinner is her offset) and the triumphant, life-affirming work of Alison Steadman (Leigh's real-life spouse) as Wendy, the earth-mother with seemingly limitless patience. Since this film, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall, David Thewlis, and Stephen Rea have gone on to great successes in films like ENCHANTED APRIL, THE CRYING GAME, NAKED, SHOOTING THE PAST, BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, and TOPSY-TURVY, establishing themselves as invaluable players in modern cinema, whether in lead or supporting roles.LIFE IS SWEET may seem to not"go anywhere"in modern terms, but look closely and the delightful, profoundly moving rewards will suprise you and no doubt lead to repeated viewings, even if just to enjoy Ms Steadman's infectious laugh. A must see for fans of British comedy and drama. Rerations < Life Is Sweet >

(One episode only, but great)
(THE DEFINATIVE DOCUMENTARY ON THE HISTORY OF SILENT FILMS.)
(Heartbreaking documentary/ Brilliant and British)
(A Fitting Testament To The Unsung Heroes Of Hollywood) I am very glad I got this collection, new, when I did!
This set of mini-documentaries and interviews are a treasure that is woefully overlooked in the growing interest in silent film groups.
Oh - to have it in DVD!
The silent star recounting their excitement and memories are infectious. This is a classic work - very well done - and but for the intro music and some graphics, holds it's age .
As many silent film collections that have come forward in the last few years - some very obscure - this set would have more mass-appeal - and including the later classic actors' views on the silents would be interesting to Classic Movie Fans as well.
That it includes very major silent film stars interviewed in-depth is remarkable and one can see and feel time roll back - and the actor/actress reborn. Some of my favorites are Viola Dana recollecting the death of her fiance in an aerial stunt for the movies. The other is (I believe - I'm writing this from memory) Hal Roach's ribauld memories and also King Vidor's observations.
It's like sitting on the backlot of an old movie studio - and hearing the gossip retold of the teens and twenties!
This set caught my interest in silent film when I was in my teens viewing it in the early 1980's. It never let-go.
Does anyone know who can be written to request the DVD version be produced?
Thank you.
I wish they would bring the whole series by Kevin Brownlow out on DVD, but since they haven't, I settled for getting the one episode(there are many) I wanted the most. This DVD includes two parts, one on Clara Bow and one on John Gilbert. Both of these great silent stars didn't make it into the sound era. I am fascinated with John Gilbert's story, so I wanted to see this. I've actually seen the entire Hollywood story I fell in love with this series when it first appeared on PBS. Not only was it an excellent documentary, it gave many viewers their first and, probably, last look at stars from the silent era; most of whom would be dead within the next 5 years. Also since saving film wasn't much a concern back then, many of the clips used have probably deteriorated to dust. My only complaint is that this excellent 11+ hours series isn't released on DVD in America, as yet, and I still have to lug out 13 individual VHS tapes to watch it instead of 2 or 3 DVDs in a compact case. Before there was Ken Burns to do it, there was an extraordinary documentary about silent film. Absolutely riveting in its wonderful arcana, in-person interviews, stock photos and footage, narration by James Mason, and the terrific music by the brilliant Carl Davis, this series is a must-see for anyone who loves film and wants to know where it all started!! There are facts and anecdotes here to amaze, and break the heart as well. Mason's voice-overs are perfect....one minute he's the objective narrator, and the next moment, his inflection can have you chuckling, or tearing up at the stories of all the various players in the early days of Hollywood. And has there ever been a more beautiful score for television, or film for that matter, than the work of Carl Davis?? His opening title alone for the credits is gorgeous, and the producers then use different pieces that Davis has composed for these silent films. If only his music had been available to the original producers and directors for them to hear. Obviously, Davis must be one of the biggest fans of silent film of all time. If you can get a copy of this series, do so. It is never shown on television anymore, and it's a terrible thought that this series could be lost through neglect the way so much of the film from the 20's and 30's has been lost. It has been estimated that more than half of all silent film has disintegrated or been disposed of. Let's hope that the producers of this major documentary series re-release it on DVD as soon as possible for the many fans who remember it, and for the many more fans who will, I'm sure, be thrilled to discover it. Having written a school drama project on stuntmen this episode, from what I would call the definitive series on Hollywood and the names that made it famous, is a gold mine of information for the researcher. This episode in particular is filled with sheer pathos and moving accounts from the memories of the great unsung heroes of the silver screen. A crying shame then that there is no dvd release of this valuable series. Many of them involved in the interviews (even the narrator) are now dead. How important then that this documentary needs re-releasing? Rerations < Hollywood 10 - The Man With the Megaphone >
