Otherwise this is a wonderful growth chart. I think it is very well made and beautiful. It is NOT a toy, so it is not made for your child to play with - definitely not sturdy enough for that. I am disappointed about the measurement problem, but not enough to send it back. It is too pretty and too easy to fix. I hope they are still around for my next child!』

Therefore, I had to measure my daughter and then manually enter it on the chart. Not much of a growing chart to me. The stickers included to record Birthdays and Special Occasions are small and melt together with the background color/design, therefore are really hard to spot. Because of this, he is on a home-cooked diet and he is doing great! But it has been very difficult finding good, nutritious store-bought treats that he likes. Sam's Yams have been a blessing . . . he looks forward to to his "Big Boyz" sweet potato every night. And the best part is knowing that the only ingredient is . . . a sweet potato!!!! No artificial colors or preservatives. The only drawback is that he gobbles it up very quickly. It lasts him 5 minutes, if we're lucky. But, Gunner highly recommends them as a good, tasty, healthy treat!』

Suffice to say, I love the music from this era because it conveys a sense of life long gone from our society.
I wanted to add to my relatively small collection of big band music a good overview of Harry James, and decided, after some reading, on this representative two-CD set of the band's recordings from the 1940s on Jasmine Records from the UK.
Good choice!
As a long-time record collector of predominantly opera/classical music, I do know something about recording quality, and especially transfers first to LP and now to CD. What a splendid job Jasmine have done here. The source 78s must be platinum, if there were such a thing. No surface noise, nothing but James's crystal trumpet, and his outstanding personnel, along with impressive vocalists Helen Forrest, Dick Haymes and Kitty Kallen. (Alas, nobody sings anymore.)
Special accolades must go to Geoff Milne at Tall Order who, according the literate, informative and educational liner notes, did the mastering and CD transfers, and whose judicious use of the CEDAR noise reduction system demonstrates that the oft-maligned process can be enormously successful in the right hands. (The "black" before Kitty Kallen's entrance on "I'm Beginning to See the Light"--Gee, no pun intended!--is a bit disconcerting for a moment, but so it is with noise reduction and on these recordings it's just about 100% successful.)
Jim Cutler, president of the Harry James Appreciation Society, and Messrs. Paul Pelletier and Brian Belton have done superlative work to preserve these great artists and make them available to anyone who wants to listen and get a feeling for a world we've been throwing away for decades.
Indeed there's nothing in this collection not to like, but I'll single out a few selections I'm particularly fond of: the elegance and sophistication of "Ain't Misbehavin;" Helen Forrest's wistful "But Not For Me," and her signature "I Had the Craziest Dream," which includes James's wonderfully languid, soaring introduction. As a Sinatra fan I find "All or Nothing at All" with a pre-Dorsey Frank is simply wonderful. In fact, as a lifelong Yankees fan, I'll even accept the "Dodgers Fan Dance" because James's playing is so breathtaking! Indeed, every selection conveys impeccable taste, brilliant execution and flawless musicianship. This last is particularly impressive because as the accompanying notes make clear, band personnel changed so often. How many really exemplary musicians there were then!
At the time the bands were performing and making recordings, we were either mired in the Depression, entering or already in a world war. Yet every time I hear any of the musical standard-bearers of the time, I'm always struck first by the ebullience and joyous sense of life they embody--and then by their immense musical talents. There's something within all the music I've ever heard from this time--just as there is in the films of the period--that really captures a stark difference in attitude, feeling and being between then and now. Yes, it was a different time, but hardly "innocent" (the stock dismissive reply that has little meaning) given the life-and-death seriousness which engulfed the world then. The music here, in itself and in its performance, captures a wonderful essence of the kind of people we were. I think a better one.』

(If you like the Big Bands, this one will do nicely) 『James was always a favorite of mine -- he had the sweetest lip of any trumpeter I ever heard. I particularly liked his Trumpet Rhapsody, Trumpet Blues, and Merchant of Venice arrangements. His Sleepy Lagoon is a classic and the response to it at the time of its release reflected that.
This collection has all of them, and a good many more, all beautifully re-mastered onto CD's. The distracting scratch-scratch that one could reasonably expect from the old 78's from which they were made is not audible and yet none of the depth of the big band orchestral work has been lost.
If you're as old as I am, or if you just like the big band genre, you need these cd's.』

This collection is far superior to--and boasts better audio quality than--the other Harry James compilation I own ("Best Of Harry James..." on Curb label), which contains only 12 cuts! Jasmine label is okay, though I usually prefer ASV/Living Era collections. Why does it seem like the best compilations of American music are issued by European labels?!』

This is cool stuff, played by hip young musicians! It doesn't matter what era you're from, if it's good, it's good! Period! My dad,(who's now in his 80's), delighted me a couple of years ago, when he told me he was a doorman/bouncer at the Palais Royale in Toronto when he was young, and Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc., used to play there! I'm a musician (guitarist), and I play everything from heavy-metal and jazz fusion to electronica. What people don't seem to realise is that this is powerful, rhythmic, swinging, loud, hip, big band music, played by guys (and girls singing) generally in their late teens to early 30's, which makes it every bit as energetic and youthful as any type of "rock" music of today, or otherwise! That's why NOBODY can possibly duplicate what they did back then, in these new "tribute" big bands. And the musicians in today's so-called swing era big bands, just seem to be going through the motions. Forget it! They sound cold, fake, trebely, corny, loungey, and the drums are too loud- there seems to have been a precise reason why the original big bands had the balance and sound they did! With comparisons to rock and various types of music today, all the individual instruments back then didn't have microphones up close, or inside, going through gigantic sound systems, pumping out thousands of watts, like a typical concert of today, they just had their own individual, and collective lung power! Wow! and that speaks volumes! Still, I like this CD, except, I really miss "Don't Be That Way", and a couple of others that I think would have made this a "five star". But it's still very good!』
(Not The Best Benny Goodman Compilation Around - But Not Bad) 『I agree - to a point - with the 1-star review in that the liner notes written by Chick Crumpacker, co-author of Jazz Legends, are skimpy (one page) and that the information on each track is minimal, being confined to composers and recording dates. There is no proper discography showing Victor label numbers, vocalists, and chart details. But I wouldn't call the sound quality poor. Of course, I'm not an audiophile so I don't look for "pristine" perfect. As long as there is no loud discernible hiss, scratch and pop I'm fine with it, and that's the case here. It's fine.
However, where I also find fault with the album is the title "Greatest Hits" as three of the 15 tracks were never hits per se for Benny, and he DID, after all, have 75 Victor hits from which to choose. The non-hits here are Get Happy, which was the flip of Christopher Columbus in the spring of 1936 on Victor 25279, Tea For Two, the flip of Runnin' Wild on Victor 25529 in February 1937, and Always, the B-side of Japanese Sandman on Victor 25024 in June 1935. Only the latter among these cuts was ever a hit, reaching # 10.
Of those that are here, most are instrumentals the earliest of which are represented by the fall 1935 two-sided Body And Soul from the Broadway musical Three's A Crowd (# 5) and its flipside, After You've Gone (# 20), both by The Benny Goodman Trio (Benny, drummer Gene Krupa and pianist Teddy Wilson) on Victor 25115. Another from that same period is King Porter Stomp on Victor 25090 (# 10) by the full orchestra featuring a trumpet solo by Bunny Berigan, as does the early 1936 hit, Good-Bye on Victor 25215 (# 20), and which became Benny's closing theme.
In the summer of 1936 he had the instrumentals Stompin' At The Savoy reach # 11 on Victor 25247 in July, followed by In A Sentimental Mood on Victor 25351 (# 13 that August) and Moon Glow on Victor 25398 (# 8 in September). This was a re-recording of his 1934 # 1 on Columbia, done this time by The Benny Goodman Quartet featuring the Trio with the addition of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. Later that fall, You Turned The Tables On Me became a # 1 in October with a vocal by Helen Ward on Victor 25391, while a new version of the 1934 Columbia hit, Love Me Or Leave Me, this time by The Benny Goodman Quartet, reached # 4 on Victor 25406. Then, in December, Bugle Call Rag, yet another re-recording of a 1934 Columbia hit, made it to # 13 on Victor 25467.
Early in 1937, with vocal by the great Ella Fitzgerald and featuring the trumpet of Harry James for the first time, he had a # 1 smash (four weeks at the top) with Goodnight, My Love from the film Stowaway on Victor 25461. The latest hit here is 1938's Sing, Sing, Sing (With A Swing), considered by many musical historians to be the band's greatest record ever. Selected for the NARAS (National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences) this peaked at # 7 in April 1938 on Victor 25796. With an interpolation of Christopher Columbus included, it marked the final recording involving Gene Krupa with the band.
So, not a bad disc by any means, but one which would have been turned into a 5-star volume by the inclusion of some hits in place of those three that weren't - such as the two-sided # 1, It's Been So Long/Goody-Goody (vocals by Helen Ward) and the # 1 These Foolish Things Remind Me Of You, all from 1936 and involving vocals by Ward. Or perhaps the 1937 and 1938 # 1's This Year's Kisses with vocal by Jimmy Rushing and the instrumental Don't Be That Way and its B-side, One O'Clock Jump.
It should also have had more information on the tracks such as provided above because this is what many buyers look for in these historical compilations.』

Goodman was a giant of twentieth century popular music, and numbers such as the joyous "Stompin' at the Savoy" and the mesmerizing "Goodbye" are prime reasons why his music has not fallen into obscurity seven decades after it was popular. 』

The above quote was part of Benny Goodman's responses to Glenn Miller's questions to him before he had his own band: "How do you do it? How do you get started?" His initial advice was "I don't know but whatever you do, don't stop. Just keep on going. Because one way or the other, if you want to find reasons why you shouldn't keep on, you'll find them. The obstacles are all there; there are a million of them. But if you want to do something, you do it anyway, and handle the obstacles as they come. Even to this day, I don't like people walking on stage not looking good. You have to look good. If you feel special about yourself then you're going to play special." That was a totally brilliant advice from a talented jazz artist to another one-in-the-making back then. Definitely Glenn Miller paid attention to his advice and became one of the most successful recording artists in his time.
A very fine clarinetist, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Awardee and the King of Swing, Benny Goodman was one the greatest jazz artists along with Glenn Miller in the Big Band Era.
This CD features a collection of fifteen Benny Goodman's greatest hits recorded between 1935 and 1937. My personal choices from this compilation include Irving Berlin's "Always," Kurtz/Mills/Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood" and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye." These tunes were recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra.
"Body and Soul" and "After You've Gone" are two tracks from The Benny Goodman Trio (Benny Goodman on clarinet, Teddy Wilson on piano and Gene Krupa on drums). It was Gene Krupa who bestowed upon him the title of undisputed "King of Swing."
Two of the best tracks are "Tea For Two" and "Moonglow," which were recorded by The Benny Goodman Quartet (the Trio plus Lionel Hampton on vibes).
I highly recommend this wonderful CD to add to your collection of timeless Big Band music. Great music to listen to if you're in a sentimental mood! 』
(Satisfaction with this one depends on your budget...) 『If you like your jazz/swing to be pre-World War II, this disc's for you. Here are 15 cuts with Benny and orchestra, featuring pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton on vibes. You get 53 minutes of tracks laid down in the 1930's, including some famous songs and performances. With all that said, however, this RCA release may not be the best value available in Goodman CD's. The liner notes are brief, there is little data on the songs or the settings. Two of the four booklet pages are wasted touting other releases in this particular RCA "Greatest Hits" series. My copy says the disc was issued in 1996. But nowhere does it say "remastered." While the songs are not really scratchy, one can tell the original sources here were not in perfect shape or cleaned up digitally. I found my copy at a bargain price, so I am satisfied. The music, after all, is vintage Benny Goodman, and the sound quality is acceptable. If you want the single best CD of his hits that's in print, however, you might look at the other items in the Amazon listing. Read some reviews, compare prices---you might be happier with a different choice.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Cult Movie Waiting To Find it's Cult) 『Dusan Makavejev's SWEET MOVIE is a masterpiece of outrageous cinema that falls somewhere between the disturbing surrealism of Buñuel and Dali's UN CHIEN ANDALOU, the ironically vibrant color that Lynch uses in the opening of BLUE VELVET, and the subversive dark humor and scatology of Water's PINK FLAMINGOS. I was intrigued with a review I read, then I discovered that it featured Otto Muehl, a mysterious artist and sexual offender who was featured in Amos Vogel's classic book FILM AS SUBVERSIVE ART - which I read 25 years ago while studying film in college.
Muehl filmed his "happenings" like a lot of people in the 1960s, but his "happenings" were like unfettered Id explosions of sex, bodily fluids, food and vomit. Just the stills in the books had something about them that made me realize this was the guy who took cinema right up to the edge in a free form that made Jean-Luc Goddard's films look like Hollywood blockbusters. These classic, seldom seen films can be viewed on Muehl's website.
SWEET MOVIE has two plots that kind of converge: First there is the Carole Laure, as Miss Canada, who wins a "beauty contest" where the women are screened by a gynecologist on stage to see if they are virgins. PULP FICTION fans should note that when the doctor looks at Laure's vaginal, it glows like the famous suitcase. The contest is staged by the mother of a wealthy milk tycoon (John Vernon). After a bizarre concept of foreplay, it is revealed that the tycoon has a golden penis. Laure freaks out so bad that the mother has a servant take her to a secret room where she is further humiliated, then stuffed into suitcase and sent off as luggage on a plane. A good chunk of the film follows this luggage bag going all over Europe.
Inter cut with these two stories is gruesome black and white documentary footage the Nazi's shot of the discovery of the mass graves from the Katyn massacre, where 21,000 people were Polish citizens were killed by the Soviets.
Meanwhile Anna Prucnal play the Captain of a ship filled with sugar and candy, and it also has a giant head of Karl Marx on the front of it. Makavejev's original concept was to have Marx's mouth in the water, so you couldn't tell if his was swimming or drowning, but when the boat was launched his who face was above the waterline. Prucnal picks up a sailor, Potemkin, in an obvious homage to Eisenstein's famous film of the same name. She warns that if she falls in love she will kill him. She also seduces three young boys, first with candy, then with a striptease in a scene that I'm not even sure you could legally film today - think TIN DRUM times three.
Meanwhile Laure finally finds herself at the Eiffel Tower where she meets "El Macho," a romantic singer who lip-syncs to old records. She is eventually taken in by Muehl's commune. After a dinner where everyone eats and then joyously throws up, I believe it is Muehl himself who is naked and pees on camera and a bucket of feces is poured on him as he screams and cries like a baby. Please note, I am not talking about special effects; he is peeing, and those are actual feces. Makavejev has noted that while that wasn't exactly what he was looking for, it was a collaboration between him and the infamous Muehl, so he left it in with all the ugliness.
The grand finale there are two of the most beautiful scenes in the history of cinema. The first is of Prucnal and Potemkin having sex in a bed of sugar, where she stabs him - lots of red on white in the shot - and buries him in the sugar. The second is, rather than feces, Laure is covered from head to toe in chocolate for a commercial and makes designs on her nude body with it.
The police stop the ship and have the bodies of the children Prucnal are discovered murdered. They are laid out in plastic body bags on the shore, which is edited with the bodies from the massacre being laid out in the same fashion. After all the black and white footage, the scene comes back to the children, who come to like and seem to be leaving their "cocoons."
I'm sure I'm missing some of the point, as this was made for a young audience behind the iron curtain 30 years ago, but I get enough to love the bizarre beauty of the film. Not only is it obviously subversive, a strange humor runs throughout the film, and it is beautiful. Makavejev wanted to make the film a "love letter to color film," and he succeeded in spades.
It's one of those films that's hard to describe in words; the poetic beauty and crazed comedy have to be seen to be understood. I would throw it in that group of films that dare to wallow in their own creativeness, no matter how alienating it might be to the general public, like the ANDY WARHOL'S FRANKENSTEIN, ANDY WARHOL'S DRACULA, HEAD, THE TRIP, BENEATH THE VALLEY OF THE ULTRA-VIXENS, and even the subversive porn films like PARTY DOLL A GO GO or ULTRAFLESH. It's a cult movie looking for it's cult. If you got this far in the review; BUY IT!

(from scatology to eschatology) 『I have to begin by admitting this is not an easy film to watch. To the regular viewer, the scatological overtones are gratuitous, to say the least. However, watching this film within its politico-temporal context, one can see that it is rather mis-characterized. Allow me to explain my journey in watching this film:
Like many of you, I decided to watch it just because Criterion put it out. I've known Yugoslav cinema to be rather colorful and did not mind a bit. As things started, I immediately saw the transparent pointers to cartoon-like representations of the US, Soviet Empire and even Western Europe for good measure, and the end-conclusion/state of each one of the systems. Alright, assuming the film was made in the '90s, I said to myself, "For the sake of completeness and honesty, where is the depiction of the Yugoslav tragedy?"
Indeed, post-WWII Yugoslavia had been an interesting historic anomaly. Its president, the Croat Iosip Broz Tito, who had won the best anti-fascist credentials leading the partisan fight from the mountains, managed to steer his country clear of the two major blocs on a third way. In other words, he was a socialist leader of a socialist country, within a socialist geography, who did not take orders from the Soviet bloc. Tito's Yugoslavs were enjoying most freedom--of thinking and movement--from all socialist countries. Then in 1991, 11 years after Tito passed away, Yugoslavia went up in flames. So, I'd have expected a bit of self-reflection from an Yugoslav director. Then, pausing briefly, I checked the production date and was stunned to see it was turned in 1974.
To put things in perspective, in 1974, the Cold War was going strong, Richard Nixon resigned as President of the United States, and Solzhenitsyn was deported From Russia. Now, why is this last point relevant? Because, before Solzhenitsyn made it to the West, large numbers in the western intelligentsia had been pro-Soviet, going as far as denying the atrocities perpetrated in the name of communism. So, you can imagine, it took a talented Yugoslav director, and a visionary in many ways, to say it all in "Sweet Movie," as we all have come to witness at high speed as we entered the 1990s. Yes, hear from any former subject of (East European) socialism and "eating s*h*i*t" was an usual metaphor describing the official discourse. Yes, many young and idealist had been figuratively drawn in by the sugar of, and then devoured by, the Socialist Revolution orchestrated by Moscow. And, yes, here in the west, a lot from what we do is put a mask on things to sell more/better.
So, unless one can watch this film taking into account its context, Dusan Makavejev and his "Sweet Movie" will get maligned. Context accounted for, this is an important document that stands the test of time and art. Yes, this can be art, the type that calls for attention not to itself but to the greater dangers we face as society at one point or another. Scatology is a means to militant art. In fact, Makavejev turns scatology into eschatology, and so should the viewer.』
(Disturbingly erotic and erotically disturbing...) 『Sweet Movie is like the crack baby of Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom - Criterion Collection and Pink Flamingos. With such a surreal quality to it, Sweet Movie keeps you glued to the screen no matter how disturbing the subject matter may be. Interlaced between all of Sweet Movie's disturbing images are stock footage of Nazi medical experimentation which blur the lines of the movie's fictional degredation with real life human barbarianism, which takes away the ability to say its just a movie. Before giving the impression that Sweet Movie is a pure exploitation film with the singular goal of offending the viewer's senses, I must add that it is at the same time a powerful and beautiful film, with bizarre imagery and situations. But it is still pretty messed up. I recommend this movie to anyone with a strong stomache and an interest in arthouse/exploitation cimema. And if the content in the movie doesn't bother you, like some reviewers have noted, then congratulations, you've reached a greater point of desensitization than I have.』
(Excess) 『When I saw "Montenegro" all those years ago, it never really occurred to me that such a fantastic, idiosyncratic, and mysterious movie would actually come from a director that made other movies, too. It's just one of those things where each movie seems so ultimately different that it isn't feasible that there could be more of the same.
"Sweet Movie", to put it quite simply, is about excess. It's the story of two women, one a psychotic roaming candy-making pedophile boat woman, the other a delicate model/constant victim of sexual faux pas and impotency. The movie is filled with food, sex, and the gore that comes from food and sex. As the victimized woman finds herself in increasingly ridiculous situations and the psychotic woman puts people in others, many forms of abject art (revulsion/attraction, spewing and eating, killing and fornicating) keep a loaded bullet to the face of the viewer, mixed of course with a fair share of political asides and cultural themes (such as this: the fact that religious people appear scattered throughout the movie and are no more surprised by the activities of the characters than anyone else).
This movie falls squarely between something you'd expect from Alejandro Jodorowsky and Juzo Atami. Unlike Jodorowsky's work, however, the symbolism has a lot of weight, and unlike Atami, there's a lot more ambiguity. Dusan Makavejev is one of the most post-modern filmmakers out there, constantly asking questions that previously didn't exist, and then proving that there's no answer to them. This movie comes closer to a strong theme than "Montenegro", but it's full of a lot of self-awareness that purposefully deconstructs the very notion of "theme". (A Mariachi singer in Paris is filmed, and through distraction is shown to be lip-syncing. Later in the film he's actually supposed to be singing--and again is shown to be lip-syncing.)
In the end, it's hard to know what exactly to feel about this movie, minus revulsion for those of weak stomachs. It's both beautiful and intensely repulsive, which is a feat in either direction.

My only reservation about them (which applies to most bathtub-squirt toys) is that they accumulate gunk in them if you don't empty the water out regularly. If you forget to do that, it can be pretty gross when the toy is squeezed and tiny bits of black crud shoot out and float around the tub.』

I wouldn't label it as her best or chock full of all sorts of new stuff, but it is very enjoyable and a solid read. Taken for what it is- a funny, well-written and pleasant book, it is well worth the time.
