(some help with the decision.)
(At Last....A New Spin on Downtempo!)
(Fun and easy to enjoy music!!!)
(Bitter:Sweet) Very smooth and cool tunes. Nearly every song on the album is great. I would say their newer album (2008) isn't as good, but this album is a must have! Seriously, just buy the album.
With all the cookie-cutter bands popping up left and right, Bitter:Sweet is undoubtedly one of the greatest breaths of fresh air music has seen in a long time. I was immediately hooked from the moment I heard one song, and needed to hear more. This album definitely deserves more than 5 stars.
I won't say comparing them to a band like Esthero is "unfair", I'm just saying, I think they're are in their own vein. Bitter:Sweet takes pretty much every sound you've ever heard, and filters through them to make TRULY unique experience for the listeners. Their creativity shines from brass horns to live DJs, and an exceptionally well-presented female voice. Their sound alone is worth checking out. The other reviewers have more to say about the actual lyrical content, but the band is so good it's not even necessary. I rarely post reviews, but this album was just too amazing to keep it to myself. I came across Bitter:Sweet while lounging around in a martini bar with my husband, and I pounced on the DJ when he started spinning "Bittersweet Faith" to find out who it was! The grooves are sultry; Shana's voice is ethereal and hypnotic. When I hear the sexy grooves, I have the urge to slip on rhinestone stilettos, a little black cocktail dress, and sip my dirty vodka martini while swaying to the seductive grooves. OK, maybe that's getting slightly carried away, but it's perfect to spin after the kids go to bed and grown-up time begins.... ;-)
First time I came across Bitter:Sweet, was after watching the movie the Devil Wears Prada. I basically loved all the music in it and was looking to buy the soundtrack originally but then did some research on each of the artists included in the album, and after listening to the amazon samplers I decided to buy each artists' album individually.I definitely am happy to be doing just that, I still have some albums left to buy... This CD was in perfect condition. The case, as I was told before purchase, was abit worn but it actually looked pretty cool!
Got the CD in a good package and feel very pleased with my purchase, will keep buing for this person in future whenever they have what I want! Rerations < The Mating Game >

(Dorsey rules!)
(It's Unbelievable How Music Could Be This Good)
(Tommy Dorsey -Best All Around Dance Band!)
(Great sound quality, superb music) The warmth and feeling of this kind of jazz are never reached in the more modern styles of jazz. Everyone thinks of Miller and Goodman when Big Bands are brought up, but the Dorseys ruled. "Opus One" is the best known classic, but by far one the best songs ever from that era is "The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round" it's a classic, funny song, reminding us all of our prejudices and foibles. There is a great humor to Tommy Dorsey, lacking in some of the others, and well worth listening to, to understand another facet of the era of Big Bands. The Dorsey brothers and Glen Miller were the greatest musicians of the World War II era. They kept so much of the public entertained during the war and gave so many Americans (and their allies) hope. Not even Joan Baez and Bob Dillan and their anti-Vietnam War songs are this good. This music is much better than the garbage that people call music today. The Dorsey band could do everything. The hottest Swing and the smoothest ballads and the liveliest pops and novelties. His band was every inch as good as The Miller, Goodman and Shaw bands and at times, even better!
Dorsey had several bands and his pre 1940 band is very different than his band of 1940 - 1946. The '40s band had a more dynamic sound to it, especially in the Swing instrumentals! Plus...all those great vocalists - Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Connie Haines and the Pied Pipers vocal group, not to mention Dick Haymes, Stuart Foster and the great Clark Sisters aka The Sentimentalists.
The recordings on the CD above are a mixture of 'both' of TD's band of the era.
All the sides on the CD are choice and the only reason I have rated the CD 4 stars out of 5 is because my 'personal best' are not all on there!
And with all due respect to the reviewer below, the version of "Opus One" on this CD *is* the original 1944 recording when TD was featuring a big string section in his band. "Inferior"? No such way.
*For more by me on the Dorsey band, click on the link below- http://www.jazzitude.com/bldorseya.htm So many "greatest hits" compilations miss the mark either in quality or song selection. But this disc lives up to its billing as the "Best" of the Dorsey orchestra. It kicks off with one of the stellar and swingiest tunes of the Big Band era, "Opus Number One" (though this version is inferior to the more famous "single" version). It's hard to listen to this song and not appreciate the brilliant arrangement and musicianship displayed here. Along with Goodman's "Sing, Sing Sing" and Glenn Miller's "In the Mood" this has got to be in the top three of any Big Band all-time greatest list. It's a pity that Dorsey has been somewhat forgotten today and shoved aside in preference of Benny, Glenn and Artie. Was he as good as those giants? No, but this disc shows that his band could swing, had a phenomenal young vocalist named Sinatra and that Tommy's trombone playing wasn't half bad. This is a must have album for anyone serious about the Big Band era. Rerations < Tommy Dorsey - Greatest Hits [RCA] >

(Go Salty!!!)
(Thomas gets new friends)
(Probably one of the best Thomas videos!)
(Great DVD!) In this movie you'll meet Salty the desiel ngine, Harvey the Crane Engine, And Elizibeth, Sir Thoppam's first truck. Watch Salty do work he really doesn't to very quikly, watch Harvey rescue Percy in two good ways, watch Cranky the crain cause a silly accident. Wath what happens when a new fog horn, uum, well might destroy itself. Watch happens wen the mail is to heavy for Harold. And find out what happens Thomas'es driver discover a vintage Quarry Truck As usual you cannot go wrong with Thomas - Kids learn morals and manners in an easy to listen and view forum. Saltys secret is a great tape to add to your seires of thomas videos the storys on the tape feature a new chracter in almost every story my brother and sister were always woundering when are thare going to be new chracters wean we were at the store one day they baged us to get so we did we all enjoyed the storys on the tape the best is harvey to the rescue but the new charcter elzibaeth was jest plain rude none us relly liked her but anyway if you have a new thomas fan in your family looking for new chracters buy this p.s. New friends for thomas has more We love this video. Salty is especially neat and shows the viewers that even though you may not enjoy what you're doing right now, pretty soon you'll be rewarded for your hard work and get to do what you enjoy. Salty is sent to the quarry to help out and gets the job done so very fast and impresses Sir Topham Hat. Salty is able to keep the troublesome trucks in line and is the only engine able to do so. In the Fogman story, when Hatt tries to replace Seral with a machine to warn the engines of fog, it causes a disaster and Seral gets his job back. Percy helps Harold when he crashes to the ground and learns how to be a true friend.
We watch this video over, and over and over... It is just so very cute and well done. Highly recommend! What a very, very cute DVD this one is! Salty is just really neat and provides a great deal of entertainment for my little one. He's got one of those Scottish seaman accents, complete with a couple of missing front teeth, and is just a delight to watch. Alec Baldwin narrates this one and does a wonderful job on Salty's voice. Really, really cute and we watch this one over, and over, and over...
All of the stories are very well done and it's very nice to see stories about Cranky again. Salty calls crabby folks around Sodor "Captain" which makes my little one laugh each time. Cranky is the "captain" in this movie.
Highly recommend this one! A new, very different cast of friends has just arrived on the island of Sodor. Salty is a distinctive engine who loves the seashore, has a never-ending supply of stories, and can magically transform the normally troublesome trucks into happy, efficient workers. Harvey is an odd-looking fellow who quickly proves himself an indispensable addition to the railway, and Cyril the Fogman demonstrates that technology can never completely replace competent workers. Harold and Percy discover the true value of friendship and even Cranky benefits from a temporarily rosy perspective on the world. Finally, Thomas gets some help from an unexpected source--a dirty, grimy wreck that is somehow connected to Sir Topham Hat's past. Join Thomas and his friends as they discover that, while trains come in very different sizes and shapes, they share certain fundamental similarities that provide the basis of friendship. Shriek Show(2002-11-19)
customer 's review (I liked it)
(So BAD its GOOD)
(What the hell.....)
(What Was He Thinking?)
(bad idea) People keep comparing it to other Lucio flicks but I liked it because it wasn't like the other Fulci flicks. One person on another site said it best calling it a fairy tale. It's a fairy tale but with dark overtones. Still I really thought it was decent. Sort of like a "Tales of the Darkside" type of atmosphere with the parents being killed then coming back as ghosts and speaking to the kids (who are the only ones that see them while the relatives think they're nuts).
Acting was ok. There's even a few comedy moments in the film (guy's hand melting and the crane that has a mind of it's own, the old man whose a psychic, conjurer whatever he is confronting the spirits.
I think if you're in for a different type of movie from the director this is worth looking at. For me it's a type of love story that expands even through death. Don't be so easily put off by the critics! THIS IS NOT A TYPICAL FILM OF FULCI. If you are looking for THE BEYOND look elsewhere.
Imagine a kids film from the viewpoint of children laced with strong grahic violence with a surreal dream like quality and an underlying sadistic theme of revenge.
I have seen just over 30 of Fulci's films and this would be in my top 5. Don't miss it ! I cant believe Lucio Fulci made this film, its with out a doubt his worst movie ever. The only good part is when the guy robbing the home gets his throat sliced. The whole movie I waited for Gore or action or something and it never came and that was dissapointing. Check it out if you find it for $5-$10 and $10 is to much but, its Fulci so I will keep it in my collection. A great Fulci flick is Zombi and The Beyond along with 2 more decent flicks being "house by the cemetary" and "City Of the Living Dead." but all 4 are worth the buy well to me atlest By far and away the WORST Lucio Fulci movie ever made. Luckily for me I rented this movie before I decided to add it to my collection. The description of the movie made it sound interesting enough to rent and being a big fan of the Fulci trademark movies I thought it would be pretty good. Sweet house of horrors has none of the trademark Fulci gore which was quite a let down not to the mention the movie is just absolutely a waste of time. By this point in his career I think Fulci just ran out of ideas and threw this together witout much effort. Even the trademark eyeball scene was sub par at best.
If you're a "HUGE" fan of Lucio Fulci and haven't seen this film I recommend strongly that you rent it first. If your looking for a good Fulci movie may I suggest "Zombie" or "The Beyond". Don't waste your time with this unimaginative, dull, pointless film. It's really that bad! being a huge fan of lucio fulci, bought this to add to collection of his other dvds that i owned, bad mistake. The storyline is poor, and frankly is the worst he has ever made,no gore really apart from beginning, just a stupid idea.avoid it at all costs. customer 's review (After Dark My Sweet)
(pulp fiction)
(A great little film noir)
(Jim Thompson on film--and punchy!)
(An Underrated, Relatively-Unknown Noir) Excellent and entertaining movie with fine acting by J. Patrick, R. Ward, and B. Dern. The widescreen DVD has very good picture and sound.
Jason Patric is memorable as a drifting, washed up boxer who gets caught up as the patsy in a disasterous kidnapping scheme. Patric's only fault could be that he's a bit too pretty as he's a good actor and like others have said below it's a shame that he hasn't been seen in more films. Rachel Ward makes a believable alcoholic femme fatale but I couldn't help but think of Jessica Lange playing the part as the role seems tailor-made for her.
Over-all this was a great little film, very film-noir, so much so that it almost seemed strange to be watching it in color, so it didn't surprise me at all to learn from the other reviews that the story was actually from a 50's pulp novel of the same name. I can't speak for the novel but in the films case this title doesn't fit at all but it's good to see that it's not being forgotten.
Film noir focuses on desperate people doing desperate things. And that is exactly what this movie entails. Others have gone over the plot here so I will not do that. I will say that all actors did exceedingly well in what can be very difficult roles to play. They all acted off each other in a believable manner. Bruce Dern was never seedier than he is with this character. Jason Patric and Rachel Ward also excel at thier characters. What is decieving here is the setting....somewhere in the southwest, desert area. Film noir is typically dark and shadowy but here there is lots of sunlight. It takes the focus off the setting and puts it on the plot, which I found to be an interesting twist and quite effective. In the heat, the emotions bubble over. Lust, greed, deception, lies, mistrust and paranoia all play out in layer upon layer and is accented by Jason Patric's character very effectively. For those who like film noir with a twist you will certainly like this little known gem. It is immediately captivating and magnetic. I don't know how I missed it on it's original release but certainly glad I caught up to it. Take a chance folks... you won't be disappointed. Very nice piece of work with strong casting. How can you do better than have Bruce Dern play an ex-cop sleazeball? Or Rachel Ward as a dangerous femme fatale? Or Jason Patric as a semi-addled former boxer with smoldering sexuality?
Answer: you CAN'T. Yep, we're in Jim Thompson land--aka Desperation City, and each one of these three characters has some kind of desperation going on, as do just about all of Thompson's characters. This is neo-noir at its best; you reduce the story down to fundamental elements and have James Foley directing--a rock solid director--and you got yourself one humdinger of a flick.
So yeah, there's sex and violence and yeah, they both come out of Desperation. Oh yeah. The flashbacks of Patric (as Kevin Collins), a former boxer, when he was in the ring, add just the right element for cementing the story and its Thompsonesque flavor. So there's a planned heist and stuff, but the formula isn't important. What's important is the atmosphere, the acting, the emotional punch on display. And it's definitely here.
Great piece of work. Go for it. Intense actors like Bruce Dern, Jason Patrick and Rachel Ward combine to make this modern-day film noir a winner. Of the three, I don't know who was most interesting as all offer good performances and intriguing characters.
Patric does the narration in this noir, playing an ex-boxer and mental patient. Wow, that alone makes for an interesting guy! He looks dumb, but he isn't. Ward is the slinky, attractive, cynical, intelligent and compassionate co- conspirator of a kidnapping plan that goes bad. Bruce Dern also is in the mix and Dern never fails to fascinate in about any film.
The movie could be considered kind of downer to the average viewer, but I found it fascinating....and I don't like depressing movies normally. What I found was a kind of quirky crime film. Take a look and see if you agree. This is pretty unknown film that shouldn't have that status because it's simply a good story and well-done.
If you like the twisted, amoral characters that inhabit the world of pulp novelist Jim Thompson, you're going to loveAfter Dark, My Sweet, one of the most faithful of many Thompson adaptations. Protagonist Kevin "Kid" Collins (Jason Patric), called "Collie" by those attracted to his shaggy dog side, escapes from a mental hospital and shuffles into a lonely desert town (and Patric really has the gait of a former pugilist down). Enter widow Fay Anderson (Rachel Ward), with legs that could stop a truck and a half-baked scheme to kidnap the scion of a rich family, which she's dreamed up with her unctuous and untrustworthy Uncle Bud (Bruce Dern), and it's the beginning of the end for the likable Kid.After Dark, My Sweetis a film about judging people. No one is who they seem. Only by guessing their true intentions can Collins have a chance to survive. The film also has brilliant performances by the three leads, especially Dern, whose Uncle Bud is delightfully unhinged. Director James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross,The Corruptor) is subtly adept at fleshing out the characters and their ambiguities, which solves the problem inherent in adapting Thompson's sleazy tales--namely, that much of the drama is internal, and therefore unfilmable).--Wayne Karrfalt Rerations < After Dark My Sweet >
