This is cool stuff, played by hip young musicians! It doesn't matter what era you're from, if it's good, it's good! Period! My dad,(who's now in his 80's), delighted me a couple of years ago, when he told me he was a doorman/bouncer at the Palais Royale in Toronto when he was young, and Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, etc., used to play there! I'm a musician (guitarist), and I play everything from heavy-metal and jazz fusion to electronica. What people don't seem to realise is that this is powerful, rhythmic, swinging, loud, hip, big band music, played by guys (and girls singing) generally in their late teens to early 30's, which makes it every bit as energetic and youthful as any type of "rock" music of today, or otherwise! That's why NOBODY can possibly duplicate what they did back then, in these new "tribute" big bands. And the musicians in today's so-called swing era big bands, just seem to be going through the motions. Forget it! They sound cold, fake, trebely, corny, loungey, and the drums are too loud- there seems to have been a precise reason why the original big bands had the balance and sound they did! With comparisons to rock and various types of music today, all the individual instruments back then didn't have microphones up close, or inside, going through gigantic sound systems, pumping out thousands of watts, like a typical concert of today, they just had their own individual, and collective lung power! Wow! and that speaks volumes! Still, I like this CD, except, I really miss "Don't Be That Way", and a couple of others that I think would have made this a "five star". But it's still very good!』
(Not The Best Benny Goodman Compilation Around - But Not Bad) 『I agree - to a point - with the 1-star review in that the liner notes written by Chick Crumpacker, co-author of Jazz Legends, are skimpy (one page) and that the information on each track is minimal, being confined to composers and recording dates. There is no proper discography showing Victor label numbers, vocalists, and chart details. But I wouldn't call the sound quality poor. Of course, I'm not an audiophile so I don't look for "pristine" perfect. As long as there is no loud discernible hiss, scratch and pop I'm fine with it, and that's the case here. It's fine.
However, where I also find fault with the album is the title "Greatest Hits" as three of the 15 tracks were never hits per se for Benny, and he DID, after all, have 75 Victor hits from which to choose. The non-hits here are Get Happy, which was the flip of Christopher Columbus in the spring of 1936 on Victor 25279, Tea For Two, the flip of Runnin' Wild on Victor 25529 in February 1937, and Always, the B-side of Japanese Sandman on Victor 25024 in June 1935. Only the latter among these cuts was ever a hit, reaching # 10.
Of those that are here, most are instrumentals the earliest of which are represented by the fall 1935 two-sided Body And Soul from the Broadway musical Three's A Crowd (# 5) and its flipside, After You've Gone (# 20), both by The Benny Goodman Trio (Benny, drummer Gene Krupa and pianist Teddy Wilson) on Victor 25115. Another from that same period is King Porter Stomp on Victor 25090 (# 10) by the full orchestra featuring a trumpet solo by Bunny Berigan, as does the early 1936 hit, Good-Bye on Victor 25215 (# 20), and which became Benny's closing theme.
In the summer of 1936 he had the instrumentals Stompin' At The Savoy reach # 11 on Victor 25247 in July, followed by In A Sentimental Mood on Victor 25351 (# 13 that August) and Moon Glow on Victor 25398 (# 8 in September). This was a re-recording of his 1934 # 1 on Columbia, done this time by The Benny Goodman Quartet featuring the Trio with the addition of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. Later that fall, You Turned The Tables On Me became a # 1 in October with a vocal by Helen Ward on Victor 25391, while a new version of the 1934 Columbia hit, Love Me Or Leave Me, this time by The Benny Goodman Quartet, reached # 4 on Victor 25406. Then, in December, Bugle Call Rag, yet another re-recording of a 1934 Columbia hit, made it to # 13 on Victor 25467.
Early in 1937, with vocal by the great Ella Fitzgerald and featuring the trumpet of Harry James for the first time, he had a # 1 smash (four weeks at the top) with Goodnight, My Love from the film Stowaway on Victor 25461. The latest hit here is 1938's Sing, Sing, Sing (With A Swing), considered by many musical historians to be the band's greatest record ever. Selected for the NARAS (National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences) this peaked at # 7 in April 1938 on Victor 25796. With an interpolation of Christopher Columbus included, it marked the final recording involving Gene Krupa with the band.
So, not a bad disc by any means, but one which would have been turned into a 5-star volume by the inclusion of some hits in place of those three that weren't - such as the two-sided # 1, It's Been So Long/Goody-Goody (vocals by Helen Ward) and the # 1 These Foolish Things Remind Me Of You, all from 1936 and involving vocals by Ward. Or perhaps the 1937 and 1938 # 1's This Year's Kisses with vocal by Jimmy Rushing and the instrumental Don't Be That Way and its B-side, One O'Clock Jump.
It should also have had more information on the tracks such as provided above because this is what many buyers look for in these historical compilations.』

The above quote was part of Benny Goodman's responses to Glenn Miller's questions to him before he had his own band: "How do you do it? How do you get started?" His initial advice was "I don't know but whatever you do, don't stop. Just keep on going. Because one way or the other, if you want to find reasons why you shouldn't keep on, you'll find them. The obstacles are all there; there are a million of them. But if you want to do something, you do it anyway, and handle the obstacles as they come. Even to this day, I don't like people walking on stage not looking good. You have to look good. If you feel special about yourself then you're going to play special." That was a totally brilliant advice from a talented jazz artist to another one-in-the-making back then. Definitely Glenn Miller paid attention to his advice and became one of the most successful recording artists in his time.
A very fine clarinetist, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Awardee and the King of Swing, Benny Goodman was one the greatest jazz artists along with Glenn Miller in the Big Band Era.
This CD features a collection of fifteen Benny Goodman's greatest hits recorded between 1935 and 1937. My personal choices from this compilation include Irving Berlin's "Always," Kurtz/Mills/Ellington's "In A Sentimental Mood" and Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye." These tunes were recorded by Benny Goodman and his Orchestra.
"Body and Soul" and "After You've Gone" are two tracks from The Benny Goodman Trio (Benny Goodman on clarinet, Teddy Wilson on piano and Gene Krupa on drums). It was Gene Krupa who bestowed upon him the title of undisputed "King of Swing."
Two of the best tracks are "Tea For Two" and "Moonglow," which were recorded by The Benny Goodman Quartet (the Trio plus Lionel Hampton on vibes).
I highly recommend this wonderful CD to add to your collection of timeless Big Band music. Great music to listen to if you're in a sentimental mood! 』
(Satisfaction with this one depends on your budget...) 『If you like your jazz/swing to be pre-World War II, this disc's for you. Here are 15 cuts with Benny and orchestra, featuring pianist Teddy Wilson, drummer Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton on vibes. You get 53 minutes of tracks laid down in the 1930's, including some famous songs and performances. With all that said, however, this RCA release may not be the best value available in Goodman CD's. The liner notes are brief, there is little data on the songs or the settings. Two of the four booklet pages are wasted touting other releases in this particular RCA "Greatest Hits" series. My copy says the disc was issued in 1996. But nowhere does it say "remastered." While the songs are not really scratchy, one can tell the original sources here were not in perfect shape or cleaned up digitally. I found my copy at a bargain price, so I am satisfied. The music, after all, is vintage Benny Goodman, and the sound quality is acceptable. If you want the single best CD of his hits that's in print, however, you might look at the other items in the Amazon listing. Read some reviews, compare prices---you might be happier with a different choice.』

Capping off Chanticleer as an embarrassment of riches is a guest turn by San Francisco's own Bishop Yvette Flunder. She is the real deal, too, as both an ordained minister whose leadership in black churches has blazed fireworks in celebration of melding religion with social justice, and a Jen-U-Wine good news singer who can preach and pray and moan with the best of them.
Only the superhumanly perfected intonation of their cappella group singing, as well as the superb blend and polish of the Chanticleer dozen, will remind a listener than this group is as famous for its Flemish medieval polyphony or its unerring Purcellian clarity, as any other ensemble of twelve voices now appearing before us.
So, forget all the categories and musicology boxes which would seal off gospel music from pre-Bach cathedral masters of polyphony. With this CD we can just revel in the mysteries of good music, regardless. Yeah, Josquin, I'm talking bout you - Sit down servant, there's plenty good room.

(Crystalline) 『I'm not a huge fan of gospel, because I find it to be led by emotion, and musically undisciplined. Rousing, yes - but a little goes a long, long way. I've also found most gospel recordings to be sonically challenged. Almost as if microphones were incapable of capturing the music with clarity. None of this holds true for "How Sweet the Sound." This is a beautifully recorded cd, and every tune is both musically precise, and emotionally resonant. It is, however, a little hard to listen to in one sitting because of the "sameness" of the arrangements. That's a small quibble - who says any cd has to be experienced all at once - and "There is a Balm in Gilead," alone is worth the price of admission.』

(A Great Debut) 『The debut album by Birmingham, Alabama quartet Wild Sweet Orange is full of meditative Southern rock tunes backed by chugging guitars and good old shuffling beats. Even when the lyrics on songs like "Ten Dead Dogs" are earnest and world weary, the music remains buoyant. Lead singer Preston Lovinggood anchors the band with his vocal gymnastics on "Tilt" going from a whisper to an arena rock god wail like it's a walk in the park. The band is especially good at selling the story song, a Southern staple. "Aretha's Gold" mixes in psychedelic flourishes to spice up this twisted love story of a song which also features some wild guitar work. "Sour Milk" is more contemplative and winsome in it's overall tone but this track about "one pissed off generation of kids" is the album's strongest tunes.

(Visually Stunning Brit Cosy Couple) 『I won't "break any new ground" with these comments, so read on if you so desire.
I am a true Anglophile and lover of the Brit crime genre in particular, but usually with a more hard-edge than this. However, I fell in love with the scenery and the middle-aged dames in this series, who spend about as much time uncovering treachery and murder as they do transplanting shrubs and flowers.
As to the visuals: If you are fortunate enough to own (1) an HDTV, and (2) an upconvert to 1080p DVD player (they only cost about $100), you will be absolutely amazed at the quality of the images. We get to see in sumptuous detail some of England's most stately homes, as well as the fabulously beautiful gardens of those homes. My wife and I were frequently gasping at the magnificence of the color, the sharpness and clarity of the images, the indescribable splendour of those trees, flowers and shrubs. Whoever shot the series deserves a tremendous amount of credit. You'll want to go to England to witness first-hand some of this beauty. I found myself wondering how often they had to wait for sunny days; seems like there are many bright and clear days here, which enhances the spectacular colors of the foliage.
The crime-solving duo, hard at work in the garden, always seem to be witnessing some surreptitiously ominous or amorous interchange between unlikely characters; one can safely assume that soon afterward, a corpse or two will turn up in the library or the stable or buried among the larches.
An utter delight and a must-see, particularly if you cannot go to England to see the sites yourselves.』

The main characters, who are just good friends (but occasionally mistaken for more so) are two middle aged women who work together on creating and restoring the most beautifully filmed English and European gardens you could hope to see. Former policewoman, Laura Thyme (played by Pam Ferris) whose husband has just dumped her, and recently laid-off college professor Rosemary Boxer (played by Felicity Kendal) find and solve mysteries at every gardening job they take. The `not-too-complex' plots are enhanced by the strong friendship that develops between the two women. That the women do real work, get dirty and look the way real women do, also adds to the story quality.
Three series of six episodes each are available. A dying lawn leads to a pretty Polish blonde pushed from a roof; while Rosemary tosses off tidbits about Victorian gardening techniques and the Latin name for the early spider orchid, the bones of a buried racehorse reveal other secrets. In one clever episode, flowers are the murder weapon themselves (though to say how would spoil the fun). Some mystery aficionados may findRosemary&Thymea bit abrupt; the hour-long format doesn't allow for the elegant unfolding and deft misdirection of an Agatha Christie adaptation. But the interplay between rambunctious Rosemary and pragmatic Laura is addictive, and the suggestion--spoken aloud in one episode, but underlying the entire series--that English flora respond to the evil deeds of humankind lends an almost metaphysical air to the pair's dual pursuits. It's widescreen (*not* pan&scan), plus it comes with a Director's Commentary which offers good insights from Joseph Sargent (who also directed the original "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three").
Admittedly, it won't be cheap. Current exchange rate amounts to eighteen bucks plus shipping. But you'll then be able to enjoy one of the classics of science fiction. It predates WarGames by more than ten years, and offers a more realistic--if darker--vision of the future of computer intelligence.

(Ahead of It's Time) 『While science fiction has frequently dealt with creations getting out of control, Colossus' has enough grounding in reality to be frightening. Long before The Terminator, and the creation of Sky Net, Colossus was created to be the ultimate computer-controlled defense system, which almost as soon as it comes on line, wants links to similar computers in other countries. Instead of creating machine monsters to conquer mankind, it uses the threat of launching nuclear weapons to control the actions of humans, in order to create a machine's vision of a perfect world.
As with many sci-fi stories there are themes that comment on our strengths and weaknesses, not the least of which is a warning about concentrating too much power in one system/entity.
While the technology seen is obviously dated: in one scene Colossus has to design a data to voice system for the stupid humans; it doesn't mean that this film doesn't hold relevance today.』

If the pictures were simpler and some of the ideas presented in a different way, it would be good for younger kids like my son, too. I pick a few cards that represent ideas he already has a fundamental grasp of and we just do a few at a time- 2 or 3. He bores of it very quickly. Possibly age-related-- he doesn't sit still very long. My thought is it is better for an older child (because of the pics). However, it's a good product. I would have ordered it anyway, but I probably would have waited until he was closer to three.』

(Could be better) 『I love Paula Deen, and I love to bake. I am also pretty good at it. Most of the recipes are very tempting, but I do not like to use cake mixes and other pre-packaged food in my baking. I expected better from her.
Also, I have made 2 things so far. The orange brownies, and the pumpkin squares. While the brownies were very tasty, the baking time was way off, and the glaze is very thick - way too thick to pour, as she directs in the recipe. It's a very simple recipe, and I am sure that it was a mistake in the instructions.
The pumpkin cake was very good, but that was because of the icing. The cake itself was bland and tasteless, and crying out for additional spice and butter instead of corn oil. I belive that a cake needs to stand on its own, and the icing just enhances it.
That said, I'll still use the book, but I am aware that I will have to make a lot of adjustments.』
