This was the exact one I was looking for. I was not disappointed. Works perfectly and fits into my kitchen decor. I definately would purchase this again. I ordered this product because it was different from the other clean/dirty magnets. Now I understand why this type of magnet is not common. Every time I would open and close the dishwasher, the clean/dirty sign would switch to the opposite side and I would have to continuously fix it. In less than a month, it fell off the dishwasher and broke so now I have to buy another one. I don't recommmend this product, but if you are going to purchase it, put it on the refridgerator NOT the dishwasher as it will fall off and break. This item won't stay on the dishwasher, it is too heavy for the magnet that is on it. I ordered 3 and returned all of them. Even more beautiful than shown, this magnet was a great find. I looked in a lot of brick and mortar stores with absolutely no luck but did find some generic dishwasher magnets online. This is the only one that actually improves the look of my kitchen, and it's really high quality. Unfortunately, it's too heavy to stick on my dishwasher (the dishwasher's fault) but it sits nicely next door on the fridge. I looked at nearly every store in the area and could not find anything like this product. This is perfect in size, very appealing to the eye, and stays in place on the dishwasher. This movie has to be the worst of the Genre, there is no point to it, its disgusting and revolting, it's like a really bad porno, he does this disgusting chubby white girl in the middle of a club, it's gross and has no point. It's not really sticking it to the man if that was what it was intended to do as most similar (related) films are. The entire movie has no point, and certainly no purpose. What ever "Black Power" message this film was trying to make is lost. You'll find yourself spending most of your time trying to figure out just what in the hell this movie is about. This may have been one of the first "Black Power" movies from the 70's and it's also the worst. Sweetback pretty much runs through the entire movie, and when he is not running, he is having sex. It only breaks from that cycle to show him beating up a cop or few. The weird thing about this film is that the "Sex" has nothing to do with anything! It's mostly just out of context the entire film. This movie really has no plot. It's actually just Melvin Van Peebles running from the city to the desert. Watching this movie is like getting high. It's confusing, it makes no sense, and it's just strange as hell. "You bled my mamma, You bled my pappa, but you won't bleed me" get used to that phrase, because that's all you'll ever hear in the back tracking music this entire film. Interestingly enough Earthwind and Fire provided the music for this film, this being one of their earliest gigs. That's probably the only signifigant thing in this film worth taking note of. I can't even think of a single solitary reason why this is worth watching today. It cetainly is not worth owning. I'm suprised this even made it from VHS to DVD. I mean I don't mind the badly recorded audio or visuals of this film, I expect that. There's plenty of low budget films that look horrible; however, a good low budget film makes up for that with an outstanding storyline. This waste of footage has neither. I don't care if this is supposed to be a great "Black" accomplishment, this is trash! This is more of a great "Black" embarassment. If your looking for a 70's Black Power flick with a message I highly recommend "Watermelon Man." Now that's a great film. The only thing this films stands as today is a reminder, that even people with absolutely no talent can produce something that generates them money. I agree with the other ONE STAR raters of this "film"--Whatever it's intent, cultural timing or underground anti-establishment accolades--the film is TERRIBLE--Terrible in EVERY way--there are no redeeming qualities to speak of--It is a miracle anyone knows anything about this film all these decades later--Great films made during this era have been 90% forgotten, while this is revered--don't get it! I only watch this movie because I love everything about the 70's, but this movie is not that good to me. I know this film has been trashed by critics both black and white for its heavy content (i.e. stautory rape scene, and interracial sex scene), but this film was given an X rating. Melvin Van Peebles, who is highly regarded as the "Godfather of Modern Black Cinema" put everything he had on the line to get this film made, despite the Supreme Court, death threats. Bill Cosby even co-financed the film. Ten years ago, I purchased "Sweetback" on VHS, and I was completely, blown away by this controversial, yet revolutinary, independent Black film. Bottom Line: If it weren't for Melvin Van Peebles raising the bar in filmmaking, there would be no Spike Lee or John Singleton. Raw, jagged, and explosively angry,Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Songis a landmark in American independent cinema. Melvin Van Peebles directed, wrote, produced, edited, scored, and stars as Sweetback, a passive bouncer raised in a brothel. Shot guerrilla style on a starvation budget on the streets of Los Angeles, it's a violent tale of Sweetback's journey from passive acceptance to political awareness and active defiance. He becomes the target of a manhunt when he kills two cops who beat up a young black activist, and he bounces from hideout to hideout before running for the border, all the while getting more booty than Shaft and Superfly put together. The movie was so inflammatory by conservative industry standards that it was "Rated X by an All White Jury," which the ads proudly touted. The unusual mix of agitprop and exploitation is directed in a jagged style that recalls Godard and set to a funky score performed by Earth, Wind&Fire, which Van Peebles intercuts with chanting Greek chorus-like slogans. (Ugly Betty) (Still one of the best shows on TV) It's one of those standard jokes about every hit American comedy series is a restatement of a British one... so the case of Ugly Betty is especially refreshing, drawn as it is from a stupendously popular telenovela originally broadcast - and stupendously popular in that part of the world which speaks Spanish. Think of this particular show as a fresh breeze blowing through the dry-as-dust clichéd and sterile remains of Broadcast TV-land's vast and derivative wasteland, where every third TV series is a knock-off of two other shows on different channels. I have heard legends of an original idea, spotted years ago in TV-land; a shy and elusive creature - but enough of sarcasm. Back to my original point; which is that I am near to the point of crawling over broken glass just to watch a television show in which the protagonists are not doctors, lawyers or law enforcement personnel. Looking at the broadcast TV line up of late, one might be forgiven for thinking that no one does anythingelse for a living. Which is why Ugly Betty is at least refreshing, and double-points to the creators of this show, for wit, and for creating and developing completely endearing and consistent characters, caught in the entirely over-the-top and soap-opera world of high-fashion. It starts with the main character of the heroine; Betty, with her tacky wardrobe, her braces, heavy-framed glasses - a basically decent and competent naïf, finding her feet in the cut-throat world of Mode, a high-end world of a NY fashion magazine. Mode is made-up... but doubtless some of the various details are not. Betty has the backing of her oddly-assorted family, and a handful of friends - and being that this is a translated soap opera - most of the resulting incidents and adventures are wildly over the top. Some of them, nonetheless, manage to be quite touching on their own - the episode of Betty's older sister Hilda in the aftermath of the season-ending death of her almost-sort-of-significant other in a corner-shop robbery was unexpectedly moving. So - here we have Season Two - just as quirky, with the episodic plots just as unexpected and unpredictable as in Season One; as rich a treat as an assorted Godiva chocolates in one of those impossibly lavish boxes. One of the inserts in the "second season" box is an episode guide, disguised as a suitably worn and dog-eared subway map of New York City (and environs) placing the locations of many key episodes and the various residences of key characters. Of the extra features included, the most entertaining are a guide to the various sets, conducted by two of the bitchiest characters (in an admittedly hard-fought contest) and a complete collection of the Spanish-language telenovelas which have been part of the background, all the way along. These are presented in all their over-the-top glory. Really, the amusement value of the episode in which a character exclaims "Freeze or the snake gets it!" is alone almost worth the price of the entire set. I love me some Ugly Betty The packaging was great they fit a whole bunch of other movies on the cover pamphlets...Awesome marketing strategy. The shows were entertaining I loved each clip and the previews they presented before the beginning of a new show it helped me just so I'm not watching the same DVD before I realized well into the movie that I've seen the said one before. This is one of my favorite shows on television now. Smart, fashionable, dramatic, and funny - it has everything I enjoy watching. This was a great season, full of drama and surprises. I recommend it to any fan of the show...and I recommend the show itself to anyone. I've introduced so many different kinds of people to the show, and everyone loves it. The end of Ugly Betty - The Complete First Season left everything hanging in the air as Henry left for Tucson, Daniel and Alexis got into a possibly-fatal car crash after Alexi paid a hitman to take out Bradford, Wilhelmina and Bradford got engaged, Santos was shot, Claire escaped from jail, Ignacio got sent back to Mexico, and Amanda found out who her mother really was. The first part of season two wrapped up the loose ends of season one, but introduced new plot elements, some of them just as good as those in season two's preceding season. Betty, Hilda, Daniel and Mark all found themselves with new love interests. Wilhelmina maintained her status as comedic villain extraordinaire as she continued her plan(s) to take over Meade Publications. It's a little over-the-top, but it's all in good fun, and one of the great things about this show is that all the actors seem to have such great chemistry with one another. The only story arc that I had problems with was the Amanda paternity thing--it was very "out there," perhaps not in a good way. But I liked it in that it was handled in the way that Amanda would handle such things--completely clueless, as usual. And as usual, the dialogue is wonderfully witty, and Wilhelmina, Mark, and Amanda remain my favorite characters. The wonderful thing about this season was that it didn't seem to be affected much by the writers' strike. Wilhelmina goes to extreme measures to ensure that she will reign supreme at the office. And Daniel finds himself falling for a woman who is related to one of his enemies. That's a lot of storyline to cram into 18 episodes (which originally aired during the 2007-2008 television season) but the directors and writers do a good job of keeping storylines flowing. This season's guest stars include Victoria Beckham, Gabrielle Union, Eddie Cibrian, and Williams' ex-husband Rick Fox. John Cho--as the hilariously smarmy accountant Kenny―is a scene stealer who gets in some of the best lines of the season in the form of a mini rap: "She's Alexis, big as Texas. She knows what it's like to be both sexes." This was the first time that my daughter and I had watched a Barbie movie (of any type) and we were disappointed. My daughter exclaimed it was too scary - the skeezites (sp) eat the butterfly faries and the characters are catty and pretentious. If one was 13 I would expect it would be ideal. Also - something didnt ring quite right with the accents. And the characters spoke as you would expect them too - that is - they reformed to stereotype. This is something that i feel is wrong = especially as at 4 years old they are establishing opinions that have a long lasting effect. It seems to be narrated by someone who has english as a second language. (no offence to anyone) - but the dialogue is slimplistic and trite. The Barbie computer-animated movies are generally decent entertainment for kids, essentially benign given that they "anchor" merchandising tie-ins, but not especially great. This one is a cut above because its central message, about being comfortable with oneself despite being different from others, is delineated well and is reasonably accessible to adults. All right, it's about butterfly fairies. Even so... Mariposa is a bookish dreamer and a loner who looks beyond the confines of her world. When the queen of the fairies is poisoned, Mariposa and her companions get in adventures as they seek an antidote. On the way, they try to avoid the Skeezites, creatures that strike a good balance between being somewhat scary (they eat butterfly fairies) and rather clumsy, to mild comedic effect. The best scene takes place in the Cave of Reflections, which reveals multiple facets of each character's personality. At time of writing, my daughters are 6 and 5 years old. They are consistently engaged by this movie after multiple viewings, and I've sat through it more than once myself. That's a good indicator for any family entertainment. My girls really like this movie a lot. We have all of the Barbie movies and they like them all!! Exactly what I wanted and in great shape. I also received it very quickly. Thanks My girls liked this movie, but I couldn't help but notice that all of the Hispanic characters were voiced by non-Hispanic actors. Are there not plenty of Hispanic actors looking for work? Movie DVD Elina knows that it's difficult feeling like you don't belong, so when Bibble decides not to visit a friend for fear of not fitting in, Elina relates the story of a butterfly fairy named Mariposa who loves to read and dream about the stars and the worlds beyond her land, but never quite feels like she fits in with her fellow fairies. Flutterfield was once a land of frightened fairies forced to hide in darkness from the monster-like Skeezites who devour butterfly fairies, but is now ruled by kind Queen Marabella who protects her land with glowing flowers. When a power-hungry fairy named Henna poisons the Queen in hopes of stealing the throne, it falls to Mariposa to venture outside Flutterfield to find the antidote to the poison and save the Queen. Hotel for Dogs was a great movie. My grandchildren and I watched this together and we absolutely had a ball. The kids enjoyed it very much. It was wonderful hearing their laughter at the antics going on. I highly recommend this movie!
Kids love dogs. How else to explain the success of last December's Marley&Me or this nondescript comedy based on the Lois Duncan bestseller? In it, two foster kids secretly adopt a dog and when he runs away, they find him in an abandoned hotel along with a few other strays. Naturally, they decide to care for all of them and hilarity ensues. By the way, if you enjoyed the book, a sequel is coming out soon. I'll bet a sequel comes out for the movie as well.
Another one to share with the kids--and the dogs will pull at your heart strings too. Made me want to run down to the pound and adopt the lot of them...
Cute movie, even keeps the adults entertained.

Everyone deserves a loving family, but foster kids Andi (Emma Roberts) and Bruce (Jake T. Austin) have been placed with a flaky couple who care more for their aspiring rock careers than their foster children. Even though Andi and Bruce's mischievous tendencies repeatedly get them into trouble, the siblings are essentially good kids who care deeply for one another and their secretly adopted dog Friday. After a close call with the local pound, the kids end up searching for Friday in an abandoned old hotel where they find several stray dogs seeking shelter. The kids' compassion for the homeless dogs compels them to begin caring for the strays and they soon join forces with three other local kids to take in strays from across the city. Bruce is a clever inventor whose innovative gadgets ensure top-notch care and constant entertainment for all the dogs (as well as a multitude of laughs from the audience). Unfortunately, Bruce's and Andi's devotion to the dogs eventually causes them to pass up what may be their last chance for a better foster home. When the police storm the hotel and take all the dogs to the pound, the kids make a daring attempt to rescue the dogs that will likely land them in separate group homes. It is excellent if you use this product once a day before walking or running. Apply just little cream all over your belly and wrap the area with microwave plastic, and take away plastic when you feel sweaty and clean your skin with a dry cloth.
Yes, if you work out you must use Sweet Sweat! It will make you sweat, and that makes your workout worth while! I have used it for years and I will not work out without applying this product to those areas that I am concentrating on during my workout!
Don't mind the texture of this product it feels a little "guncky" for lack of a better word....it is worth it cause IT WORKS!

My boys and I love Annie's Homgrown Cheddar Bunnies. I have priced the cheddar bunnies at a few diffrent stores and found that the best price is on Amazon. I also love having the food come directly to my home.

We used to buy baby goldfish crackers for our toddlers until we found these. We bought a whole case and our toddlers love them. It took about a month for our little girl to stop calling them "sishy crackers." She couldnt tell a difference. In my opinion they tast better than goldfish crackers. They're not as salty tasting. I think we have these with at least 2 meals a day, not to mention snacks. I love snacking on them too!! A great snack for the whole family!!!

I tried this sauce, and the rub on our company cook out. The RT went twice as fast as the sauce I purchased at the store. All I can say is, try it. I stumbled across this rub/sauce after they won a big BBQ cookoff in KC for the second time.

delivery was a bit slow, but it was Christmas, so that is to be expected. excellent product overall for a 3 year old.
My daughter loves this puzzle because the pieces are sturdy in her hands, and the animal pictures are so vivid.
This is a well made puzzle. The colors are bright and the pictures are great. The wooden box that the puzzles are stored in is well made and also of wood. The pieces fit snuggly but with use, that will make it easier for the puzzle pieces to go together.
We bought this toy for my 3 year old daughter and she loves to play with it during blanket time. We set her on the blanket and she can't talk or get off of the blanket till her time is up. By giving her these puzzles she ASKED to do blanket time everyday. It takes her about 30 to 40 minutes to do all 4 puzzles and it gives Mommy the freedom to cook dinner without having to worry about her being under my feet and getting hurt.

The puzzles are holding up great with no splinters, chips, or tears in the pictures. If you have a child who likes to use their hands it is a great buy for them.
These puzzles are very cute. My daughter is 4 and she really enjoys them. They are much smaller than I thought they'd be, but too me thats a good thing because they are easy to store and don't take up much space.
Set includes four wooden, 12-piece farm animal jigsaw puzzles, including a hen and her chick, cow, a pig and a horse. Each is stored in a separate compartment of a sturdy wooden box. My one year old grandaughter loved and immediately began playing with it.
It arrieved in a timely fashion and was just as it described. I appreciated this very much.
I bought this for my 18-month old nephew. My niece (age 4) and daughter (age 5) had a great time "showing" the 18-month old how the toy "worked." A grand time was had by all! The toy is very cute and well made.
Well made, soft Three LIttle Pigs 'nesting' houses. My year old granchild loves this set. Bought this with the 3 Little Pigs board book.
Step back in time with this classic, the Three Pigs, and bring on the fun! The chubby pigs are the perfect size for a toddler's hand to squeeze and let out a squeak. They can hide in their color-matched soft homes with plenty of doors and windows to open and close to teach early prepositions like "in," out," " back" and "front." Kids love to stuff the big bad wolf (and all the pigs for that matter) down the chimney and watch him magically appear inside the house. Carry on little conversations with your pigs as your toddler chooses one to speak for too.

As a speech pathologist with Play on Words, I look for toys that have a lot to describe. Babies and toddlers' receptive language (understanding) has been outpacing their expressive language (actually saying words) as they hear and store new vocabulary words. But at 1½ years, they are entering the stage of their "vocabulary explosion" when they can actually learn several new words a day. As you are playing with your child and describing her action with the toy, your job is a lot easier when there is a lot to describe in terms of texture, sounds, color, size, and shape. Point out the straw, stick and brick houses, shiny, smooth and soft surfaces, big, little and medium--sized houses, match the colored houses to the pigs and talk about shapes.
My 15 month old received this for Christmas and was not interested in it at all. However, my 3.5 year old can not get enough of it. I would have thought it too young for him, but apparently not. He acts out the 3 little pigs, he stuffs all kinds of things in the houses, he plays with the pigs in the bath, he organizes it all how it came. It has become one of his favorite toys.

I admit it; I could happily live on breakfast alone. More specifically, luscious quick breads, muffins, and pastries. I have over two dozen baking books, but I still enjoy seeking out new recipes for pound cakes, quick breads, and international pastries such as danishes, croissants, and strudels. I bought Carole Walter's "Great Coffee Cakes" while on vacation in Petoskey, MI (if you happen to be in town, check out the divine kitchen store Cutler's, where I purchased this).

The first recipe I tried was the sticky buns, which were a flop. However, that was due to the fact that I was trying to proof yeast with no thermometer (baking on vacation in a sparsely equipped rental unit is always an adventure), so it is quite likely that I used too low a temperature to activate the yeast. The sticky topping was excellent, though. Once back home, I made several other recipes, and all were delicious, particularly the cherry almond cake and the Greek semolina cake (if you like Middle Eastern cuisine, this is quite similar to basboosah, a semolina cake soaked in a honey syrup).

The recipes are rated according to level of difficulty, which is illustrated by measuring cup graphics (one cup means easy, while three is difficult). The ingredients are largely things that you probably already have in your cupboards or pantry; there are few exotic ingredients other than crystallized ginger or flavored liqueurs such as Grand Marnier. The ingredients are clearly laid out, and if a recipe calls for another recipe from the book, the page number is given. There are numerous helpful sidebars with practical advice to help you make the most of your creations, such as working with yeast, what to do with scraps, freezing yeasted doughs, and baking advice. Nor is the book limited to breakfast; Carole also provides luscious cookies such as glazed ricotta cookies, biscotti, black chocolate madeleines, and several variations on rugelach, bar cookies, and spreads (cranberry orange, maple pecan, dried pear, toasted walnut, and blue cheese) to round out your day.

As other reviewers have noted, there are a few small errors and omissions, but nothing major (Carole has thoughtfully posted the corrections on her official website). If you live for muffins, sticky buns, and comforting old-fashioned pound cakes, this book is for you. If you're looking for divine danishes (a bit more advanced), croissants and strudels, you'll find those as well. There's something here for all levels of bakers from novice to pro, and I loved the international touches such as babka (Polish yeast bread), Greek coffee cake, stollen, and pain au chocolat. I would have liked to see a few more illustrations (there are color photos in the center), but that's a minor quibble for an otherwise outstanding guide to breakfast baked goods.

Am I the only person that found MISSING PAGES. This book was expensive and I purcased two. Gave one as a gift. When I got to looking the book is missing pages! Lots of pages and now it is to late to return. The gift was also missing the same pages! BUYER BEWARE this book is a rip off it looks great and most recipies are intact but wait till your wanting to bake something and the 2nd page is not there!
This book is a great investment during economic tribulation. Carole shamelessly encourages us to create quality comfort food with no compromises--a recipe for shared family pleasures. Its recipes are yummy and well written. I have had a lot of fun trying them out, so much fun that I have to restrain my enthusiasm and resist the temptation to bake all the tantalizing recipes at once. Among its humorous moments are suggestions for storage. My family gobbles up the goodies too fast for me to store anything!
Everything Carole Walters does is "Great". Coffee Cakes, Cookies, Cakes, and Pies and Tarts. Her books make a wonderful collection that covers almost everything. I wouldn't want to limit my library by only having her books but you could and you'd be tremendously happy.
I received the book as a gift--best gift I've received in a long time. The instructions are so clear and easy to follow. Everything I have baked has been excellent. Will buy her other cookbooks!

If Today Be Sweet is the second novel that I have read by Thrity Umrigar in 2009. The first being: The Space Between Us.

In this story we meet Tehmina, a recent widow from Bombay, who is visiting her only son, his American wife, and her grandson who live in the suburbs of Cleveland. Tehmina is trying to decide if she wants to move from Bombay, the place she and her husband had loved. She is torn as she also wants to be near her son and his family, but she does not want to be a burden. It would also be a big adjustment with culture change alone. Tehmina is amazed at how well her son has adjusted to life in America since he left India to attend Grad school in the US.

If that is not turmoil enough for Tehimina she tries to rescue two young boys in the neighborhood, who she believes are being abused by their mother.

The whole novel seems to take place in a little over a week, from just before Christmas through New Year's Eve. Tehmina must make up her mind rather quickly whether to stay in the US or to return to India as her tourist visa will expire soon. All the while she is communicating with her late husband as she is tries to decide what to do.

I did enjoy this book as Umrigar's writing style again was simply beautiful. A few of the situations that took place in the story did not seem to ring true. In the end a bell seems to go off in Tehmina's head and she is able to make her decision.

This is my second experience reading Umrigar, and it won't be my last. This story, about Tehmina, a widow from India torn between the old world and the new (her grown son's home in Cleveland) explores a range of emotions. Umrigar expresses the widow's grief with clarity and compassion. And Tehmina is a marvel of a character. Her instinct is to nurture and care for everyone, but often in American society, we are taught to not interfere with the lives of others. Tehmina is conflicted in many ways, and that makes her triumph all the more "sweet."
Compared to Umrigar's first book "The Space Between Us" this novel doesn't fare well. The main conflict in the novel--will Tehmina stay in the U.S. or go back to India?--is hashed back and forth throughout the entire book to the point where it becomes tiresome. By the time Tehmina reaches her decision it is an anticlimax. There might have been more tension if the family was struggling financially or if Tehmina's son, Sorab, actually lost his high paying job. In the end, I found the paltry struggles of the rich were not nearly as riveting as the life and death struggles of the poor that Umrigar revealed in her first and far better novel.
I picked this book up after finishing "The Space Between Us" They are very different books, but written in the same way. I did not think that this one was as good of story or told as well as The Space Between Us.
I have a confession to make. Since the first time I picked up MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN, I've been a pushover for anything Anglo-Indian in fiction. It's not just the joys of Bollywood references and the mad fun that is Hinglish; it is, of course, the fact that Anglo-Indian authors (Rushdie, Lahiri, Divakaruni, Seth, Chandra) actually do new things with novels without sacrificing good stories.

Even when those authors, whose multicultural heritages and lives have steeped them in language play, choose to "play it straight" and write a simpler narrative, the result is often richer than it might be in the hands of an American or British novelist. One of the American Anglo-Indian novelists whose work I like best is Thrity Umrigar. Umrigar is a serious journalist with a Ph.D. in English whose 2001 debut, BOMBAY TIME, has stayed with me for years, like the memory of a truly delicious and satisfying meal. The description of a long-married couple leafing through their satin-covered wedding album together remains one of the most tender evocations of nostalgia I've ever read.

"Tender" is a good word to apply to Umrigar's books, as one critic did in a recent review of her latest novel, IF TODAY BE SWEET. Tehmina "Tammy" Sethna is a recent Parsi widow who has landed in suburban Cleveland because her beloved and very successful son settled there with his American wife after finishing college. For decades she relied on her gregarious, decisive husband Rustom; now that she has lost him and left their Bombay home, she feels more dithering and ambivalent about everything than she ever did. Although her son Sorab and WASPy wife Susan try to make her feel at home, she gets on their nerves (and puts a damper on their lovemaking). Although her grandson Cavas, or "Cookie," adores her, he is an American child with our culture's casual indifference towards societal elders. Her closest friend and boon companion turns out to be the immensely large and comforting Eve Metzenbaum, whose own grown son's casual American indifference towards his mother infuriates Tammy.

What angers Tammy much more, however, is the cruelty and abuse she sees going on next door, where the owner's trashy sister-in-law mistreats her two young sons past the point of Tammy's ability to turn the other way. On Christmas Eve, she takes matters into her own hands, leaps the tall suburban fence between the two houses and rescues the children from their sad situation. Once that occurs, the novel's resolution is swift and nearly glib: Sorab's boss recognizes Tammy's authentic spirit and decides to promote her son, the rescued boys are happy with their aunt and uncle, and Tammy not only asserts her identity but her independence as well.

That doesn't matter one bit. In fact, despite its glibness, the conclusion doesn't feel tacked on but rather natural. That's because Umrigar is not playing for plot; she's writing to explore the nuances of life on the margins. What does it mean to lose your partner? Can a single elderly woman make a difference? Is it better to be honorable, or successful? And tell me --- where is the Amer-Anglo-Indian border? In Umrigar's beautifully evoked universe, it's shifting all the time.

SWEET LIAR is a favorite of Deveraux fans. Samantha Elliot travels to New York from her Louisville home to locate a trace of a grandmother who'd disappeared when Sam was a baby.
Her landlord, Michael Taggert becomes the love of her life and he helps her untangle a life that went wrong on a bloody night in 1928. The mystery gets lost, but the story flows for a rapid read.

Sweet Liar would have to be #5 on my list wittily dubbed as my "Top Ten Favorite Jude Deveraux Books" (after the Velvet series, of course). The reason why I love this book so much? The hero, Michael Taggert.

Following the death of her father, divorcee Samantha Elliot travels to New York City to fulfill an odd condition of his will: she has to live in the city for a year and see what she can find out about her grandmother, who disappeared immediately after the murder of Samantha's mother when Sam was very young. To help - or compel - her, her dad has sold their house out from under her and taken a twelve-month lease on an apartment in Manhattan, so Samantha really has no choice but to obey her father's wishes. She arrives at the apartment and meets (in a very unorthodox fashion) her landlord, the oh-so-attractive, oh-so-charming, oh-so-wealthy Michael Taggert.

Jude Deveraux definitely delivered some terrific one-line zingers (such as the old lady who wonders why a young woman would blush at her mention of making love: "Why is it every generation thinks it invented sex?").

Next to Jamie Fraser (of Diane Gabaldon's Outlander), Mike Taggert has to be one of my favorite romance heroes. The man is pure fantasy, and nobody does a fantasy man as well as Jude Deveraux. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, Mike is a complete character. And completely appealing, to boot. When he tells Samantha, "I'm Michael Taggert, and I'm a different man," my bones just melt.

What reader could resist a man who drags the woman he loves on an all-day shopping and makeover marathon at Saks Fifth Avenue, who insists on spending oodles of money on her, who worries about her health and spirits even when she's not worried about herself, who helps her discover the truth about her family's shady past, who teaches her to appreciate and celebrate who she is, who breaks down the walls of negativity built up by her ex-husband, and who's drop-dead gorgeous to boot? This guy suffers from a refreshing drop of self-doubt, by the way, and he's never let all his money go to his head. He also loves, loves, loves kids. Here's how Deveraux describes him:

He was the most perfectly formed man she'd [Samantha] ever imagined. He was movie stars, men in underwear commercials, guys at the gym, the construction worker in the red T-shirt who'd whistled at her but she'd pretended she hadn't heard; he was the men in three-piece suits whose brains were as sexy as their bodies; he was lazy, indolent seventeen-year-old boys whose muscles bulged out of their clothes, rodeo stars, and those smooth-cheeked, eyeglassed men who held their children tenderly. He was all of them.

I'll take one of each, please.
Gosh - this book was so boring that I skipped a good two hundred pages and still understood what happened. Firstly, let me list the common factors in all of JD's books:

1. A heroine who is beautiful but likes hiding her looks for some stupid contrived reason (Legend, Sweet Liar, A Knight in Shining Armor).
2. She also suffers from low self-esteem and comes up with stupid reasons to look down on herself...all resulting in men treating her like s**t.
3. A story that involves either time-travel or hynotism, bringing her into the past.

Yet, while I did somehow manage to finish Legend and A Knight in Shining Armor, I read about 200 pages of Sweet Liar, skipped the next 150 pages in disgust and just read the ending. And you know what! I didn't miss anything, it seemed.

The only JD book that I liked was Remembrance, but only when Talis&Callie make an appearance. I wish I could've skipped the first 60 pages but I might not have understood what was going on then... Skip Sweet Liar; it's boring...
I have most of this author's books and this book made me want to order the rest. I got my book accurately, the condition is new and the customer service was great. I would recommend this seller and author to anyone. Great service
Through most of my early romance reading, I was strictly an historical romance reader. Contemporary seemed bland compared to the love found on the wagon train or in a castle. But I read the preview of Sweet Liar in the back of another novel and I was hooked. I couldn't wait to read the whole story. I fell in love with Mike Taggart and his whole family that day. I had finally connected the present day Montgomery/Taggart family with all of the ancestors from the past that I had already read about.
This book launched me into appreciating a good modern romance and still remains my favorite. I read it at least once a year.

So here she was, in big, dirty New York City...her parents were dead, her divorce was final, and she was all alone.... Yet Mike could only get so far with her -- when he tried to get closer, it was like running into a brick wall. But Mike wouldn't give up. As they probed her grandmother's past, he was slowly uncovering the joy and affection Samantha had buried long ago -- and leading them closer to the dangerous truth about a bloody spring night in 1928, and a seductive blues singer named Maxie....
