Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (My favorite Detergent) 『When my son was a toddler years ago, a family member gave me some of this detergent for his clothes and linens. I am still using it today for the entire household as this is my favorite detergent for all colors and most fabrics. The borax removes stains beautifully and the sweetpea scent is lovely.』
(I love it but...) 『It is $4 dollars more expensive here than at the online drugstore - plus, shipping here was going to be $7... Forget it, great product but, I'll get it elsewhere!』
(Great for baby clothes and bedding!) 『I couldn't disagree with the previous reviewer. I love Caldrea's Sweet Pea laundry detergent. It's designed to be used for baby and children's items, and always leaves my baby's clothes and bedding clean and smelling fresh with a very lightly sweet scent. I find comfort in knowing that the ingredients are all natural and safe for baby. Some dark or bright stains require further attention than just a throw in the wash, but otherwise I've been very happy with this product.』
(Horrible) 『If you do any kind of physical activity in your clothes to where you sweat, this product WILL NOT get the smell out. In fact, count on your towels and other washed items to take on a funky smell if you continue to use this stuff. Although some of their other products are effective, Caldrea's environmentally friendly attempt at laundry detergent fails.』
(Smell SO good!) 『I love this stuff. It smells great. Definitely use fabric softener when you use it with towels.』 『The subtle fragrance of Sweet Pea, one of the loveliest and earliest flowering spring vegetables,』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Good Scent) 『If you like the smell of honeysuckle, then this candle is for you! The scent is strong and yet not overpowering and defintitely smells like honeysuckle.
We tried the candle the other day after buying one and tried it in our reasonably large family room. After about an hour the scent permeated the room.
Again, a good choice if you like the smell of honeysuckle. Recommended.』 『Juicy Orange is the feature for the month of March. Yankee Candle's Housewarmer jars are exceptional and effective candlesfor home fragrancing. Approximately 150 hours of scented enjoyment.』

『The Monkey Dance: All the Kids Are Doin' It! is the first foray into kids music by the Minneapolis-based Sweet Colleens, but the genre is clearly a natural fit for these good-natured denizens of the roots music world. Listeners age 2 to 9 will love this CD; and, in the tradition of kids records by artists such as Dan Zanes, the record will also appeal to the whole family. Featuring the classic Sweet Colleens sound (described as "a high-energy, infectious, and crowd-pleasing mix of Celtic folk-rock and alt. county/Americana, with Cajun and Caribbean seasonings"), the mostly original songs on The Monkey Dance range in style from funky (The Monkey Dance) to folky (Woody Guthrie's Pretty Baby), Cajun (No Beans, No Brownie) to Caribbean (Going on a Road Trip), sad (The Golden Vanity) to sentimental (the lullaby Da Doo) to...well...just plain silly (Big Fat Wet and Goopy Poopy Diaper). Special guests on the CD include The Minneapolis Youth Chorus and Michelle Campagne of Canada's Hart Rouge. Happy listening... and don't forget your monkey-dancing shoes! *** Also available as Amazon MP3 downloads.***』 タイトル『 Ceremonial Music for Trumpet&Symphonic Organ >

This CD provided many choices, all elegantly played with great feeling. Not only have we ample choices now, but we have also had many enjoyable hours of listening for sheer pleasure. The range is good, combining well-known favourites with others that we hadn't thought of. We appreciated the prompt delivery of the package in the post, too.』
(Soul Stirring, Deeply Moving Music) 『I come to this review with great heart-felt enthusiasm to nudge you a little to purchase this Stirring Album to feed your inner soul that is hungering for deeply moving music for trumpet and organ.
I purchased this album years ago, now, but do, in truth, come back to it very often for the soul stirring that only the trumpet can give you. While I (and probably many) normally do not think about the trumpet (or brass at all, for that matter) very much, it is, truly, lovely, filling sound that stirs one like no other type of instrument(s).
Soundwise, there is NO DOUBT that this fabulous disc is DEMONSTRATION-Quality...put it on your system and turn it up, and you will certainly agree with me on this point. And the acoustic is simply stunning...you'll see!
While this entire album is just superb, I want to be sure to point two things out to you.
The first is the Mouret "1st Suite in D" excerpt, more commonly known to most as the "theme" from Masterpiece Theater. Here, with this acoustic, simply stunning!
The second is the Deeply Moving Alan Hohvaness piece "The Prayer of St. Gregory". I defy one to find a more deeply reflective, moving, piece of music--anywhere. Simply touching, clear to the depths of your soul. Trust me.
A short story for those who may appreciate it. When I lived in Washington DC, I regularly went to the Sunday afternoon organ concerts at the National Cathedral. Of course, for those who know, you sit surrounded by the pipes (if you choose). In late summer of 2005 I was at one of these concerts, and to my delight, "Prayer of St. Gregory" was on the program. This has long been a very much-loved piece to me. Well, the trumpet soloist was located way up to the entrance, between the last pews. As the trumpet made its entrance in the piece, the sun hit the right position to strike the rose window, and it splayed its multi-colored bits all over the inside of the cathedral, increasing temporarily with the rising of the trumpet. I was moved to trembling with this, and after the concert, I spoke to a couple who had sat near me, and they said the same thing, in fact the lady said she had started to cry. When these things happen like this, does it not reaffirm our belief that there is, indeed, some higher being, who presents such great stirring beauty to us?
Do get yourself a copy of this stunning album, you will never regret it, I swear to you. ~operabruin』
(Good Wedding Music) 『I was looking for ideas for music for my wedding last year and found this cd to be really helpful. If your looking for ideas and inspiration for marches and other tunes associated with wedding ceremonies look no further.』
(Ceremonoal marches for trumpet and symphonic organ) 『It is an excellent recording especially the 12 marches by Telemann.』
(A ceremony in sound) 『This is a beautifully performed CD of ceremonial music of the Christian tradition. While organist Michael Murray talks about the diversity of kinds of ceremonial music in the liner notes essay, the musical selection here is drawn from the Western Christian tradition with few exceptions.
Sometimes the music did not start out as ceremonial in nature - Murray points out that the 'Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night's Dream' is now considered traditional wedding-march music, whereas at one time it considered completely inappropriate.
Music is drawn from the past four hundred years - works of well-known composers such as Purcell, Handel, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Bach are collected here, together with lesser-known composers such as Paradis, Mouret, Charpentier, Clarke and Martini, famous and respected in their day, but less known as personalities now (although their music will undoubtedly sound very familiar to the listener with any exposure to Western music). The CD also includes a few pieces from modern composers such as the French Charles Gounod, the British Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the American Alan Hovhaness.
Organist Michael Murray and trumpeter Rolf Smedvig make a dynamic duo in this celebratory music. Murray plays the symphonic organ from the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland (I've been in that church for a concert, and it is grand indeed). Smedvig is a Grammy nominee for his work with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, serving on the faculty of Boston University and Tanglewood. Murray has had a worldwide career of recitals, being a frequent guest of orchestras, and often sought to inaugurate grand organs upon their installation.
This is a grand disc, a ceremony in sound, and a wonderful piece to have in one's collection. 』

(Magnificent) 『One of the finest CD's Ive ever listened to, even better when you have someone as magificent as Jessye Norman and of course Kathleen Battle. Two tremendous stars that shine bright in anyones life.』
(I wish I had seen the concert) 『Put two operatic sopranos together for a concert of spirituals, and what do you expect? So much emphasis on artistry, that the almost sacredness of the spiritual is lost? Not so in this case! Both Norman and Battle have maintained the depth of feeling this genre is meant to portray. Put two operatic sopranos together for a concert, and what do you expect? Two voices so similar that time drags in a seemingly endless monotony? Not so in this case! The contrast between Norman's sheer power and Battle's lyricism and vocal flexibility keeps the listener on audio tiptoe. And there is the obvious rapport with their audience, so vividly noted in the crowd's response throughout "Scandalize My Name." I can understand the concerns of some previous reviewers, that this is not what we might call a "standard" approach to spirituals. However, my collection includes several recordings of spirituals, from the simplicity of Marion Anderson, to the folksiness of Harry Belafonte, to "Spirituals for Strings," and the chorales of Fred Waring and Robert Shaw. Each of these approaches elicits a new depth of the feeling expressed in this musical form. "Spirituals in Concert" is a welcome and worthy addition to what I already owned.』
(It Just Doesn't Get Any Better!) 『You can tell right from the start that they had fun doing this performance together. Listen in particular to "Scandalized My Name." What a kick! This recording is from the PBS TV broadcast of a few years ago. Just hearing them isn't as good as seeing the show, but it's about as close as you can get. Great music.』
("Lord, How Come Me Here") 『I must add, to the praises above, that Kathleen Battle's "Lord, How Come Me Here" is the best "quick" explanation of the long-lasting effects of slavery that I can think of. The line, "They sold my children away," says it all.
And the VERY funny "Scandelize My Name" is also worth the price of the total album!
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (3.5 stars out of 4) 『The Bottom Line:
I'm not sure the ending strikes the right note, but even with a little hiccup Sweet Smell of Success is a fascinating study of human greed and cruelty that is extraordinarily frank and biting for a movie from the 1950s (or any era really); add in a pair of terrific performances by Curtis and Lancaster and it's a heckuva film.』
(A truly great, no nonsense movie!) 『The very first movies, relied upon exaggerated acting and the actors' good looks. Then, along came the 'talkies' - and voices assumed great importance. With the advent of 'talkies' came the necessity to tell a good story - cinematically. Today, the emphasis is all on 'special effects', 'shock value', 'sex, and foul language.
For a relatively brief period between the coming of talkies and the modern cinematographic masterpieces, there was a halcyon period where excellently acted and expertly directed films were made of exceptionally good stories - often based on first rate novels.
'The Sweet Smell of Success' is one such movie. The actors are highly competent, the acting is superb, the story is great and the direction is first rate. 'The Sweet Smell of Success' comes together exceptionally well and is a first rate movie in all respects.
I would recommend it to anyone who wishes first rate entertainment.』
("AN APPLE MADE OF ARSENIC.") 『One of the problems with studying in film school, being a movie buff and getting older is that at some point in ones' life a man ventures into the video store, peruses the shelves and reaches the conclusion that he has seen every movie worth seeing. I thought I was getting there until a few years ago when I heard about and checked out "The Sweet Smell of Success". It was like that with "Chinatown", which I never saw until the 1990s and now consider one of the best films ever. "Sweet Smell of Success" holds up totally even though it is black-white, set in 1957. Burt Lancaster is J.J., based on Walter Winchell, who was a leading accuser of Communists in the media. Tony Curtis is a lackey publicist who lives on the whim of those who pay him to place items in various columns, which means he must grovel at the feet of clients and columnists. J.J. plays him like a fiddle. This has lines so vitriolic and perfect, Frank Manciewics in "All About Eve" is no more biting, and Bette Davis in "Eve" bites with the best of 'em. Lancaster just fills the screen with irony and sardonic, hurtful wit. Curtis fends it off with skill, it is like a fencing match. Anybody who has any desire to study dialogue must watch and memorize this. Everything is tremendous; the acting, the directing, the score, the noir shadows of New York at night. The music is unreal, lots of horns, filling the room with its wailing sobs of a corrupt, naked city. A love story between J.J.'s little sis and a musician (Martin Milner I think, who was in "Adam 12"), is the heart of the story. It is the one true, good thing, but J.J. is a monster. Perhaps Bob Towne had this in mind when he cast John Huston to be an incestuos father in "Chinatown". The inference, being the '50s, is much more subtle but it seems J.J. has the hots for sis and wants nobody to have her. He brands the musician a Commie, using sycophant secondary journalists to keep his own hands clean. Any chance for this dark one to have a happy ending goes down the tubes when sis, as much to torment her bro, kills herself. Curtis is utterly ammoral. His picture appears in Webster's next to the word ammoral. Many films have played off this theme. "Swimming With Sharks" (1996, Kevin Spacey, Frank Whaley) comes to mind. If this could be 20 stars I'd give it 20.』
(smart, sharp, thrilling, and made me shiver) 『I watched this film several months ago, and still the characters stand out sharply in my mind. Tony Curtis plays Sid Falco marvelously, as a man whose mind is quick with an excuse, an accusation, a bit of flattery, whatever the occasion calls for; this is a small, slick man, swimming around the ankles of larger and more powerful men. He knows he's an unscrupulous guy, but wants to work his way up the food chain. Sometimes you think he cares about going too far in his pursuit of fame and wealth - Curtis gives Falco moments of blank pause, expressions of troubled calculation - but he goes ahead anyway with every dirty plot he thinks will serve him well. As the cold colossus J.J. Hunsecker, Burt Lancaster seriously gave me chills; he delivers a brilliant and well-controlled performance. He's sharp and clean, with his powerful stature, squared jaw, and steely glasses; his speech is quiet and precise, and even his little gestures seem to send ripples through the room. I also quite enjoyed Susan Harrison as his sister, Susan, who's winsome and worn down, but still firm enough to try and get out from under her older brother's thumb; I liked how even though she's nineteen, she's got old, tired eyes, an older spirit.
I loved the screaming bright lights and deep shadows of New York City, the energy that ran through the film in electric currents. I enjoyed peering into every bar and jazz club and seedy room that Sid Falco pops up in. I liked how Susan and her beau, a steady and honest jazz musician, seem to speak in clear, round tones while Falco's and Hunsecker's dialogue comes out in a sharp patter, full of quick sharp stabs and quiet turns of the knife. Amidst the poisonous words, the lies and slander, the jibes and jokes that lead to uneasy laughter, you wait and watch for someone with integrity to (hopefully) prevail. I loved how the film shows us the power of words (even just a few words) wielded effectively, whether for good or - in a lot of cases - for the purpose of destroying people.』
(Holy Crap!!) 『I always sort of put off seeing this even though I've heard good things about it. I think it was because Tony Curtis is in it and the only thing I've ever seen him do were really bad introductions to some Alfred Hitchcock DVDs. In those introductions, Curtis fumbled his lines (which were often filled with errors) and so I assumed he was the worst actor in the world. I should kick myself.
This movie is not only one of the best "noir" films I've seen but one of the best movies I've ever seen PERIOD.
It's included in the noir category despite it not being a crime drama at all. The reason for this is it's shadow-filled cinematography and its theme of corruption. According to this movie, human beings are bleak, cold-hearted creatures.
It's about a Broadway columnist (played by Burt Lancaster in one of his best roles) who manipulates everyone he comes in contact with. He is one of the vilest, cold-hearted bastards I've ever seen in a movie because he's just so real. This isn't a noir hit-man in a fedora hat. This guy could be real and I'm sure some of us have met or will meet someone like him. Tony Curtis plays a bastard publicity agent though you sort of feel bad for him even despite his faults. He's the "protagonist" and we are told the story through his eyes. There are a couple of characters who have integrity and are not so corrupted but they only count as victims of the manipulation.
The acting is top-notch. Both Lancaster and Curtis had me in awe throughout the whole movie. Usually movies about "show business" don't interest me all that much but this movie was fascinating. This is dark look at NYC life in the 1950s. I recommend it with every noir-loving bone in my body. 』 『A classic of the late 1950s, this film looks at the string-pulling behind-the-scenes action between desperate press agent Sidney Falco (Tony Curtis) and the ultimate power broker in that long-ago show-biz Manhattan: gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster). Written by Ernest Lehman and Clifford Odets (who based the Hunsecker character on the similarly brutal and power-mad Walter Winchell), the film follows Falco's attempts to promote a client through Hunsecker's column--until he is forced to make a deal with the devil and help Hunsecker ruin a jazz musician who has the nerve to date Hunsecker's sister. Director Alexander MacKendrick and cinematographer James Wong Howe, shooting on location mostly at night, capture this New York demimonde in silky black and white, in which neon and shadows share a scarily symbiotic relationship--a near-match for the poisonous give-and-take between the edgy Curtis and the dismissive Lancaster.--Marshall Fine』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Eh, not what I expected.) 『It was not horrible, but this movie was really cheesy and had no substantial plot. I was rather disappointed. It was worth seeing but only if you get it for a very low price or catch it on t.v.』
(....boring) 『This movie was very boring and I dint follow the plot at all. I love seeing white men and black women together thats the main reason I watched it.』
(Surprisingly Good) 『Bought for only $1.00 at Wal-Mart. Was expecting a poorly made independent film, but was pleasantly surprised by this film. Part romance, mix in a little comedy, a little racial tension and a stellar cast, and you get a good story that is completely watchable and believable. I especially like that the movie ended with the romantic leads going their separate ways, possibly to reunite later. Added a realistic touch.
This was probably the movie before some of these actors hit the big time. Nicely done.』
(Missing something, bu not star power!) 『This movie was editted, but I got the jest of the director's point of view. The movie centers around Adrien Body's character who has just been dumped. He is a beginning screenplay writer who works at a restaurant to pay the bills until he is successful. All the character's work at the restaurant. They vary in races and the premise is how they get along with each other.
They movie is okay. I love Adrien Brody, so it was no big deal to watch him. He is a great actor and this role fit him. Elise Neal did a great job as a aspiring singer and his love interest. They movie was good, but not great. It lacked something, that I can' quite put my finger on. It had enough stars with Simon Baker, Lauryn Hill, Brody, and Neal, but something was missing. It is a movie I will watch again.』
(Restaurant) 『This heart-wrenching drama focuses on aspiring writer Chris Calloway, played soulfully by Adrien Brody. His past love with an African-American women, played by the exquisitely beautiful Lauryn Hill, haunts his present life, interfering with his artistic creativity, friendships, and current lover. Shadows of racism hinder his ability to truthfully love, truthfully write, and truthfully live.
As we watch Chris and his friends pinball between the things they want to do, and the things they need to do, we begin to relive our own painful experiences in the field of love.
Tensions rise as Chris grasps to make decisions that will forever affect his happiness, for better, and for worse.
Adrien Brody, Elise Neal, Simon Baker,&Lauryn Hill give memorable performances.』
『Chris (Adrien Brody), an aspiring playwright, pays the bills as a bartender at an upscale New York restaurant and pours his frustrations into his work. Jeanine (Elise Neal), an aspiring singer from a musical family, is the newest waitress on the staff. He's Italian American and she's African American, but the chemistry is there. All that stands between them is Chris's unresolved feelings for his ex (pop star Lauryn Hill in a cameo), the reverberations of his blue-collar father's dinner-table racism, and the unspoken and usually ignored but unavoidable issue of race. Eric Bross (Ten Benny, also with Brody) has a light touch with his ensemble cast--which also features Malcolm-Jamal Warner as a well-spoken law student and Jesse L. Martin of TV'sLaw and Orderas a philosophical line cook--and the thoughtful script. The issues simmer below the surface of the individual dramas, romantic complications, and personal struggles with self-esteem and responsibility that buzz through the restaurant, finally boiling over in a raw but dramatically restrained finale. Much of the drama floats between clear-eyed honesty and hip glibness, but Bross and his cast anchor the drama in vivid, complicated characters who bring the film to life.Restaurant, which sat on the shelf before receiving a short theatrical run, is noDo The Right Thing, but in its own respectful way manages to cast a fresh look at race relations.--Sean Axmaker』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Sweetheart's Dance) 『This is one of my favorite movies. I was so happy to find it on DVD and at a great price!!!』
(Five Star Johnson) 『Don Johnson is always five stars with me. A consumate actor, his range makes him an actor's actor. The DVD itself was flawless, and it arrived almost immediately.』
(dalfan) 『This is one of Don Johnsons older movies, but is fun to watch and see him play a different character. It is a light hearted movie, and Susan Sarandon is great in this movie. Really fun to see them in these roles.』
(A Grown Up Movie) 『I like Don Johnson in almost everything. The movie had alot of "F" words and God**** (which I didn't like). Overall, the movie was heartfelt and at times you wanted to just scream at both Susan and Don as they went through a 'rough patch' in their marriage. The acting was good and it made you think alot about life in general. It made me want to sit my husband down to watch it (maybe one day). I wouldn't let kids watch this because it has foul language, but as an adult I did my best to ignore it. The writer's could of definately left out the foul language or used less intense foul language. If you like Don Johnson, add this to your collection!』
(A LITTLE JEWEL OF A MOVIE) 『I first saw Sweethearts Dance at its original release in 1988. I went alone, and I was lonely, because my wife and two sons were on a school trip or something. Perhaps because of this, it has stayed in my memory all these eighteen years. Sweethearts Dance was released the year before Field of Dreams, and in some ways it deserves similar status. Field of Dreams is about how easiy life can go awry. Everything is resolved through magic. Sweethearts Dance is about how easily the optimism of youth and the passion of marriage can be diluted by the routines of making a living, raising children, and managing a family. Everything is resolved through the persistence of love. Which one is more true to life? The film contains some memorable scenes, such as the turning point when Susan Sarandon's and Don Johnson's characters admit that all they want is to love each other. As Don, sitting in a tree outside the window of his own bedroom, tells his wife, "How did things get so screwed up? I miss you. I miss our children," my eyes filled with tears. Jeff Daniels, one of the best supporting actors in the business, loves Don and Susan both, and he has his own problems with love. He has found the perfect woman, but he pushes too hard and nearly loses her. The scene in which she calls him from home while he is on vacation to thank him for asking him to marry her also tugs at the heart. Jeff is able to say, "I like you," and it's enough to restore the relationship. The ending of the movie is one of the most delightful ever filmed--you'll laugh and cry at the tenderness and ridiculousness of it. Tender and ridiculous--kind of how love is sometimes. Last week I stumbled on it while looking for something else and bought it. Last night I watched it with my wife. It felt like something important had finally been finished.』

(Informative but ignores a central question) 『It seems like a lot of trouble surrounding people who want to eat sweet things without the natural consequence of caloric gain.』
(A Must See to Protect Your Health) 『Can you trust the FDA to protect your health? Absolutely not! Despite recieving thousands of very serious complaints about health problems and bad reactions to Aspartame, the FDA refuses to act in the best interest of consumers. Sweet Remedy provides a compelling documentary of the corruption that accompanied this product to it's FDA approval, and a first hand look at the damage it has wreaked on people's health.
As a person who has suffered greatly from the effects of Aspartame poisoning (methanol poisoning), I can relate first hand to the other victims of this toxic sweetener and the disbelief that those beloved 'diet cokes' could be the cause of the maladies (especially by the medical community). You must educate yourself on this and other toxins. I lost many prime years suffering from headaches, memory loss, chronic fatigue, dizziness, and my thinking became so clouded I had to use a calculator to add simple numbers like I was back in first grade again. Thank god for the internet and the ability to find information! That is how I discovered the connection to my health problems and drinking diet cokes (the doctors would have NEVER offered that as a solution). As a consumer - be aware, be very aware.....』
(Hidden Dangers) 『Sweet Remedy is an informative, rather than an entertaining documentary. It drives home the argument that Aspartame, a chemical food sweetner, is linked to a large number of medical disorders, some at the very serious end of the scale, such as MS and brain tumours. The presentation is polemical in character: it doesn't attempt to provide all sides of the argument, but aggressively attacks the safety of this product. Sceptics will no doubt argue that the the evidence presented is, at best, anecdotal and not powerfully persuasive. But the doco does serve an important public purpose by giving voice to the concerns of those who have suffered serious illnesses and, after eliminating Aspartame from their diet, completely recovered, even in circumstances where conventional medicine could not provide the cure. This is a relatively low budget production with an important, potentially life saving message.』 『While aspartame was the single focus in Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, Sweet Remedy demonstrates that a corrupt flagship regulatory agency has given birth to numerous toxins in our food supply. This is no accident.

It looked so `dangerous' and so `chilling' and so; entertaining. Sadly, the film falters on so many levels that it can't really be taken seriously despite the fact that it tries so hard to be taken seriously.
I think that is my biggest complaint when it comes to this film. It should have embraced its flaws and fully embellished its own `silliness'. Instead, `Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte' doesn't seem to get the fact that it is campy. It tries so hard to be serious that it winds up becoming laughable, especially when you consider the fact that nearly everyone involved is so intent of `acting their parts' that they bring a new meaning to the word `theatrical'. Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland are all over the place (they truly compliment one another, if you get my drift), but neither are as slapstick crazy as Agnes Moorehead, who gives one of the worst supporting performances I've ever seen!
Am I crazy for thinking that Joseph Cotten was really good here?
So, the film has this layer of darkness that overwhelms it from the very beginning, when young Charlotte's lover is hacked up with an ax. I only wish that the film had known which way to go with itself. I mean, that opening scene is just delicious and could have led way to some horrific and truly chilling sequences, but instead the film feels cheap in its delivery and thus never once musters enough fear in us to care `one way or another' what happens in the end.
And the villains are so plainly obvious that one really only has to be introduced to them to know that they are no good, which kills any and all suspense that this half-baked thriller is trying to cook up.
When this film tries to be scary it's almost comical.
And yet, I really, really liked Joseph Cotten in this!
Some really love this film, but I for one can't really say much good for it, aside from Cotten. I found it to be sloppy and completely overly acted. The director didn't understand how to extract true suspense here, and with the ridiculous Moorehead stinking up nearly every other scene, this film is truly a disaster. What they should have done was embraced Moorehead's camp and turned this film into a spoof, intentionally serving us up laughter in place of terror. This could have at least become another `What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?', a film that established a clear cult following because it seemed to understand and toy with its own camp value.
But alas; this is a film that honestly thinks it's better than it is.』
(HELP ME FIND BETTE DAVIS MOVIE) 『DONT REMEMBER THE NAME OF THE MOVIE...one scene i do remember she was stealing old people checks and killing them, she told one lady to look in a ditch then hit her in the head with a shover???? cant remember the name of this movie???』
(Wild and creepy fun ;o)) 『Bette Davis at her best in this crazy flick. I found some short clips on the net one night and I knew I had to order this excellent movie. Turn the lights out and have some fun.』
(the damned don't cry) 『Under no circumstance can I give this movie more than one star after the way that Joan Crawford (may she rest in peace) was mistreated and abused by the producers, the director and the high holy priestess of the silver screen, Ruth Elizabeth Davis.
Although I have never been too interested in her, I know that Bette Davis was a talented actress, but she could also be very callous and vengeful and extremely mean-spirited. I find it inexcusable that she collectively had poor Joan blackballed because Bette Davis was jealous of Joan's beauty and gentility and gracefulness. Joan Crawford, a star who pioneered the modern American cinematic form, a star who acted in silents when Bette Davis was still in nappies, no less, deserved much, much better than she received.
According to Joan's close friends and assistants at the time, Joan was so emotionally and physically torn, drained and beaten down from the wanton abuse that Bette Davis threw at her that she had no other choice but to check herself into the hospital. Joan did not know how to fight. She was not a fighter in the literal sense. Joan was a pacifist who loved people. And we have to remember that this was her doctor's orders and it was for her own personal health and well-being. And while poor Joan was in the hospital she actually heard of her firing over the radio. They just threw her away like yesterdays newspaper. So sad and so tragic and so disrespectful and disgraceful. But Joan (may she rest in peace) was always a professional and always such a kind and wonderful person and even until the day she passed away never had a bad word to say about Bette Davis or the producers of this film.
Bette Davis always got the very best writers, directors, editors and producers and scripts. Like a poor, starving, innocent, puppy, looking for tables-scraps, Joan simply had to make do with whatever the studio was throwing her way. But Joan, unlike Bette, was always able to make it work because she personified the American woman. She worked harder than any other (wo)man in Hollywood and like a cat holding onto it's 9th life, sustained her career for 6 decades.
As if playing second-fiddle to a second-rate "actress" wasn't bad enough, kind-hearted Joan had to contend with the veiled comments about her appearance, too. Yet, these same critics making these comments almost never bothered to mention that Joan always looked at least 17 years younger than Better Davis. Nor did they ever mention how beautiful and elegant Joan always looked whenever she was seen out in public, even when she was well into her late '60s.
Joan made a classic movie of her own in 1964, titled "Strait-Jacket." And as Ms. Diane Baker (Joan's co-star in the film said in the '02 DVD featurette) if it hadn't been a horror movie, where, by now everyone had all of these preconceived notions about Joan, she likely would have been nominated for an Oscar.
Incidentally, the plot of "Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte" is actually rather similar to Joan's other 1964 film, "Fatal Confinement," which is much, much better than "Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte" (and came out first.)
I found the performance (or lack there of) by Bette Davis to be lacking in anything even remotely real and human. Like most of her roles (with a very, small exception) she came off as hard, brazen, not very ladylike and rather inhuman (and inhumane) and un-relatable. Incidentally, Agnes Moorhead looked like a regular transvestite. The only performance that was not lacking pretense was that of Ms. Olivia de Havilland (who is still very much alive and kicking.)
If you can find the rare Key Video release of this film, I say get it only because it has a rather unusual cover. However I do not recommend this movie for any other purposes, but if you really must see it wait for it to come on TV.
According to Wikipedia there is actually an original scene in the movie that Joan filmed that is still intact, "There is a long shot in the beginning of the movie, when Miriam gets out of the taxi upon her arrival at the Hollis plantation, that actually shows the back of Joan Crawford's head and not de Havilland's." Why would Joan's portion be left in and not cut out? Some conspirisists think that this was done on purpose to capitalize on Joan's huge name and worldwide box office appeal and loyal public, who, to this day only have the best to say about her.
Contrary to many books and reports stating otherwise, there was never a "feud" between Joan and Bette Davis. Joan was too much of a lady to wallow in the mud with the pigs and simply found it beneath her to ever disrespect anyone, so she simply said nothing. That is one of the (many) reasons why I have so much respect for her.
No, this is not the review you probably came here to read but I didn't start witting reviews on this forum to be anyone's patsy. These are my opinions and I stand by them because this is how I feel about a very poor movie that could have been very good. Sometimes I really believe that I would be more welcome at a clan rally because some people on this forum are so threatened by anyone else's different opinions because perhaps they're afraid that it will undermine their own.』
(Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte) 『Love this movie, but ordered for a friend who loves it even more!!! It's a classic!』 『Poor Charlotte Hollis. She's been shunned by the community for decades, ever since the fateful night in 1927 when her lover was hacked apart with an axe. Her antebellum southern mansion is slated for the bulldozer, as it stands in the way of highway construction. Charlotte's only hope lies in her cousin Miriam (Olivia de Havilland), coming down from up north to help settle things. Miriam, however, has other designs. Together with her boyfriend Drew (Joseph Cotten), she embarks on a scheme to systematically drive Charlotte out of her mind (not a great leap) and get her mitts on the family fortune. From there, things only get more complicated.Charlotteputs the "gothic" in southern gothic, as a great showcase for completely bizarre, overwrought, and out-of-control performances from all involved. Agnes Moorehead plays Charlotte's loyal, disheveled housekeeper to the hilt, with an odd inflection that calls to mind Amos and Andy more than southern gentility. As the drunken, conniving Dr. Drew, Cotten's accent is indeterminate at times, and seems to come and go. As great as the supporting players are, though, the crown goes to Bette Davis as the shrieking Charlotte, a portrait of isolation and decay stuck in a world of tragic delusions inside her crumbling mansion. De Havilland is a close second as the scheming Miriam; the scene where she slaps the holy snot out of a hysterical Charlotte is itself worth the price of admission. Mary Astor (in her last role) and Cecil Kellaway (as a kindly Lloyd's of London adjuster) put in the only performances with any restraint, acting as counterweights for the rest of the cast. Besides, you'll never get another chance to see Joseph Cotten playing the harpsichord and singing, or caked in mud and lily pads! With Robert Aldrich's claustrophobic direction,Charlotteis as Southern as a field of kudzu, and as subdued as a train wreck.--Jerry Renshaw』 『No Description Available. (My favourite movie) 『This film is really amazing. It's 60's trash, but it is different from other films of the type and becomes a film in a category of its own. It may sound pretentious to call a movie like this art, but is so orignal it can only be described as such. It's extremely low budget. The filming is crude, the camera is often shaky, and the editing is very poor, scenes jump around and collpase into one another. But all this almost seems to be done on purpose. The music is amazing, light 60's rock that is so repetitive that it puts one in a quasi-hypnotic state and the melodies are beautiful. The film is often silent except for the music which constantly plays in the background. The sreenwriting is of course not written by the book, but you can still find a traditional three act story if you try. The movie instead moves in segments, each having its own theme song and victim. The story is divulged in other reviews, but if you can watch the movie without having the story line revealed to you first I would recommend it. I recommend this movie to any adult who can watch it with an open mind.』
(Another amazing triple feature from Something Weird Video) 『If anything, Something Weird Video has the most interesting DVD catalog out there. Even if you have no particular affinity for the films, you've got to admit that they have some of the most unique titles ever to be displayed on a marquee. And with this David F. Friedman triple feature, SWV once again proves that they are one of the leaders of the DVD industry today.
A SMELL OF HONEY, A SWALLOW OF BRINE is obviously the main point of interest, and with good reason: it is the only good film on this DVD. SMELL OF HONEY has it all-- sleaze, cheese, a fair bit of nudity, and lesbian action; all of which usually make for an entertaining viewing experience. Stacey Walker is hilariously bad (which equals good, in my book) as sex kitten Sharon Winters, who teases horny young men and then cries rape when things go too far. The acting is atrocious (though not annoyingly so) and the ending is deliriously ironic. Anyone who is a fan of vintage Something Weird product will have a great time with this.
A SWEET SICKNESS is certainly a few notches down in the fun department, but is not without its merits; the film has some good photography and the quality of the transfer really brings this out. The main problem with A SWEET SICKNESS is the pacing (which is also the problem with THE BRICK DOLLHOUSE): minutes go by without anything much happening besides unattractive girls dancing in a very unerotic way, which makes a 65 minute film seem like a 165 minute film. But still, A SWEET SICKNESS has an intriguing plot that somehow makes up for some of its mistakes. In fact, the plot of the film (a woman moves to the city hoping to make it as a stripper, only to find that the only thing the men want is sex) leads one to believe that perhaps it was the inspiration for the infinitely superior cult classic, SHOWGIRLS. However, the ideas behind this film are far better than the actual execution.
THE BRICK DOLLHOUSE is a bore, plain and simple. In fact, I might go so far as to say that it's one of the worst films I've ever seen. This would have worked as an effective updating of RASHOMON--five women discover their roommate has been murdered, but each has a different explanation of the events leading up to her death--if only it weren't so mind-numbingly dull. THE BRICK DOLLHOUSE was obviously filmed to titillate, and while the women are quite attractive, the gratuitous nudity and sex does very little to advance the plot. Both this film and A SWEET SICKNESS pale greatly to SMELL OF HONEY, making that film look like a masterwork in comparison.
For the age of these three films, the picture quality is outstanding. In fact, the latter two are hardly deserving of such grand treatment. The sound is average, but the extras are where this disc really shines. SWV have included a commentary on SMELL OF HONEY with producer David F. Friedman, the original trailer for A SWEET SICKNESS, bonus Friedman trailers, a special shot-on-video short called "A Visit to the Apple Theater", and a gallery of posters from David F. Friedman productions. All in all, a very worthwhile set for any fan of sexploitation films, and even though A SWEET SICKNESS and THE BRICK DOLLHOUSE aren't very interesting, SMELL OF HONEY alone is worth the retail price.』
("Honey" Easy to Swallow, "Dollhouse" Smells) 『Kudos to Something Weird Video for putting "A Smell of Honey, a Swallow of Brine," one of David F. Friedman's best movies, on DVD! Sexy Stacey Walker, with her arched eyebrows, wicked smile and heavily sprayed hair, burns up the screen as Sharon Winters, a character who gets her kicks seducing men, then crying "Rape!" (In his commentary, the always-enteraining Friedman tells how he considered calling the movie "C.T.", but figured no one would get it.) It's a performance that's fun to watch, and certainly uses Walker to much greater effect than the nudie-cutie "The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill." Shot in black and white, "A Smell of Honey" has a deliciously tawdry look, yet shows some artful flourishes (likely attributed to cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs as director Byron Mabe was never known for artful flourishes. Even when the actors are clothed, our imaginations are nudged into the gutter (Walker and "victim" framed in a tree that looks like spread thighs; Walker suggestively drinking from a Coke bottle while the camera periodically cuts to the thrusting, bulging crotch of her boyfriend singing in a bar). Walker could've easily gone on to stardom, in either exploitation or even mainstream movies (she reportedly was courted by Paramount). But, as Friedman tells it, she married "some gazoony" and moved back to her home state of Texas after only making two feature-length movies.
Friedman only distributed "A Sweet Sickness," but the movie is a worthy second feature to "A Smell of Honey." Starring Vincene Wallace as a Hollywood hopeful who tries to hold on to her virtue while pursuing an acting career, "A Sweet Sickness" is nastier than most '60s sex pics, but not quite crossing over into '70s soft-X territory. Some amusing moments include Wallace's sleazy agent getting cornered on his casting couch by a Rubinesque stripper (named Bertha, naturally); Wallace sporting a hairstyle that looks like she has a giant gourd perched atop her head; a hyperkenetic performance by a spindly exotic dancer who looks a lot like Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss; and a bed brought to life through stop-motion animation. Look for Carol Channing in an opening scene (calm down, she's not naked).
"The Brick Dollhouse" is another Friedman pickup, and even he refers to it as a "worthless piece of crap." Swinging roommates come home to discover one of their roomies has been shot dead. By the time the police arrive, they've all changed into sexy lingerie--perfect attire for telling the police about all those swingin', topless pot parties they go to on a daily basis. There a few moments in this lame whodunnit that'll produce giggles, and if you like looking at topless '60s babes go-go dancing you'll be in heaven. Otherwise, even with a running time of 55 minutes, "The Brick Dollhouse" goes on waaaay too long.
There are trailers for other Friedman movies, like "The Defilers," "The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill" and "The Lustful Turk" (in which all the men wear obviously fake beards). But the best extra is Friedman's commentary on "A Smell of Honey." This sultan of sleaze and Allah of alliteration (sorry, got carried away) livens up any DVD with his frankly-told, frequently humorous anecdotes of exploitation's golden age. At times, his commentary can be more entertaining than the movie (e.g. "Fanny Hill" and "The Head Mistress"). Though "A Smell of Honey" easily stands on its own, Friedman's commentary is icing on the cake.』
(Kitschy, entertaining 1960s bad girl sexploitation trash) 『Rebounding from their disappointing Flesh Trilogy disc, Something Weird presents one certified sexploitation classic in A Smell of Honey, A Swallow of Brine, and throws in two lesser but enjoyably kitschy nudies, A Sweet Sickness and The Brick Dollhouse, for a satisfying David Friedman triple-bill. In Smell of Honey, Sharon Winters (Stacey Walker) makes a hobby of seducing her dullard male coworkers then screaming rape, ruining their careers and reputations. While not destroying men, Sharon spends her time teasing her big-haired lesbian roommate Paula. Sharon embarks on a "serious relationship" with new man at the office Lowell Carter, leading to his inevitable seduction/rejection. He reacts by having an erotic, kinky, soft-focus bondage dream about Sharon whipping and being whipped by him. After Sharon cries rape on Carter, he stalks and sexually assaults another woman and is shot in the back by her boyfriend. Finally, Sharon picks up young stud Tony, they dance at a bar, and she takes him home to try her usual routine only to find that she's more than met her match. Friedman's script nicely balances plot and dialogue with the obligatory petting/bathing scenes, and first-time director Byron Mabe (She Freak, The Acid Eaters) actually goes for the occasional arty montage. As Friedman observes, Walker ("discovered" by him on a Florida beach) perfectly personifies white-trash sexuality, playing the harlot with obvious relish as she spits out such lines as "Some of us, Paula, would rather fight than switch" or the now-famous "I may be a bi**h, but I'll never be a bu**h." The strangely appropriate soundtrack is by an anonymous garage band (Et Cetra) that falls somewhere between hippieish folk-psych and Stooges-like proto-punk, and often seems on the verge of completely falling apart. Another of Laszlo Kovacs's early pre-fame movies, this looks great even when nothing spectacular is happening; unfortunately the print is far from perfect. The tonal values, detail, sharpness, and grain are generally fine, but there is light speckling and blemishing, light lining, some heavier damage around reel changes, and a series of horizontal emulsion dings that appears for about 15 or 20 minutes midway through. Worse, the opening scene in the car, a shower scene with Sharon and Carter, and a few other spots are marred by jump cuts and missing dialogue. Considering the logistics of finding any decent print of a film like this after 35 years, these are forgivable flaws, yet still disappointing. Ignoring the print problems, Smell of Honey is terrific fun for fans of 60s roughie sexploitation and a nice bookend to Friedman and Lee Frost's The Defilers. A Sweet Sickness tells the story of the "young gals" who come to Hollywood looking for stardom only to find that unless they "put out" they'll get nothing but a "one-way ticket back to Hicksville." The narrator snidely informs us that Connie, a seasoned casting-couch veteran, has a three-day $750 Vegas gig, while roommate Dee, a newcomer who wants to make it without compromising herself, is broke and unemployed ("but then, she still has her pride"). Dee is molested by their scuzzy landlord, applies for a job with a lecherous agent (then tells him to "shove it"), and is shown an apartment by a realtor who drugs her and imprisons her (in a distorted "trip" sequence) in a room full of pot-smoking white slave girls. Later, at a club holding a strange "strip auction," Dee and a "cute" guy in silk shirt and white pants dance on stage, backed by The Tigers and the Pussycat, a novelty garage trio featuring a female guitarist with long blonde hair. The owner threatens to withhold Dee's pay for spurning the winning "bidder" and a skinny topless "hippie" chick dances wildly. Back at the realtor's, Dee's involved in a drugged-out slo-mo bisexual whipped-cream party. In the hilarious final scene, a lustful casting agent reveals his pushbutton roll-away "casting" bed. These sequences, with their goofy dialogue, sarcastic narration, and bizarre plot twists are amusing enough; unfortunately they only account for about 25 percent of the 65-minute movie. The rest is the usual "nudie" padding of dressing, showering, bathing, hairbrushing, dancing, etc., that seems at times to go on forever (at least the women are generally good looking). The soundtrack is again provided by an unknown garage/frat rock band (Raul and the Revelations), and some vintage Bell System dial telephones are featured prominently. Print quality is quite good, better than the main feature, with generally excellent tonal values, sharpness, and detail, marred only by some light speckling and visible grain. Entertaining in a mid-60s schlock sort of way, just be ready with the fast-forward button. The Brick Dollhouse, is ostensibly a murder mystery set in a "swinging" apartment building. The framing story of detectives questioning the (mostly female) residents about the murder is really just an excuse for extended flashback "party" scenes of backyard/poolside bongo playing, semi-naked go-go dancing, water-pipe smoking, joint Bogarting, chess playing, showering, dressing, keyhole-peeping, whipping, spanking, macho posturing, and spin-the-bottle sessions. There's plenty of hideous 1960s decor, clothing, and hairdos on display, backed by sub-Ventures guitar, sax, and organ. Print quality is surpisingly good, with very good to excellent color balance and saturation, acceptable contrast and detail, and some light speckling/blemishing the only evident damage. While far from classic, Brick Dollhouse is a painless, mildly amusing 55 minutes, more so for serious students of 1960s kitsch. "Yeah, she's outasight. Really outasight!" The outstanding "extra" is a florid, fanciful, fascinating audio commentary on Smell of Honey by storyteller extraordinaire Dave Friedman, easily worth half the price of the disc if you're at all interested in the history of exploitation cinema. Friedman trailers include A Sweet Sickness, The Defilers, The Lustful Turk (looks pretty painful), Starlet, and The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill (with Stacey Walker). There is also a Friedman exploitation art gallery and an odd short containing the (videotaped) trailer for Brick Dollhouse. Overall, a solid buy for 1960s sexploitation fans. Recommended.』 『No Description Available No Track Information Available Media Type:DVD Artist:SMELL OF HONEY A SWALLOW OF BRINE/ A SWEET SICKNES Title:SMELL OF HONEY A SWALLOW OF BRINE/ A SWEET SICKNES Street Release Date:01/13/2004 Domestic Genre:DRAMA』

(The Magic's In The Glasses, Not The Chalk) 『After much begging and pleading, I bought this set for my 9-year-old son who absolutely loves to draw with chalk on our driveway. Honestly, I expected to be disappointed.
The product consists of two pair of "3D" glasses and four large chalks, each composed of two different colors. In reality, the large chalks are simply two smaller ones stuck together which, frankly, are too unwieldy for little hands. No matter - the first time my son dropped one of the large chalks it broke in half, giving him the two separate smaller chalks to work with.
The instructions accompanying the package explain that, when viewed through the 3D glasses, "hot" colors (orange, pink and red) look as if they're higher than "cool" colors (blue, green). Explaining this to a kid who'd already envisioned what he wanted to draw wasn't easy, and he was predictably disappointed when his masterpiece didn't look anything like the television commercial.
Before giving up, I decided to try my hand on something simple: I wrote his initials in yellow (a hot color that "rises") and outlined each letter with a thick border of blue (a cool color that "recedes"). Serious WOW!!!! After that demonstration, both of us were hooked so we spent the morning coloring our driveway then, as the neigbhborhood kids came out to see, we let each of them try on the 3D glasses. They, too, all said WOW!!!
Before long, our chalk was running low so I decided to see if using plain sidewalk chalk (we keep a bucket of it around at all times) would have the same effect. Although less saturated with color than the 3D chalk, when viewed through the glasses it had the same effect. Keep that in mind if you order this: you'll want to hang on to your glasses!
As for cleanup, the product hoses off of sidewalks and driveways easily. It takes a little scrubbing to get the chalk off hands, though, but the kids had so much fun with this stuff not a single one complained about having to scrub.』 『Great fun all summer long!』

(sweet book about the sweet life) 『This was the first Frances Mayes book I had ever read; I must be one of the few who bipassed Under the Tuscan Sun (probably because I really didn't like the movie). However, I do love to travel-though I don't have the money to go as I'd like- and I really like Italy, and for those reasons, I found this a delightful read. I love the descriptions of living the sweet life in ways that I can only dream about doing. As with some other reviewers, I find Mayes a bit "whiny," and in this regard, she seems like a spoiled child occasionally, but overall her descriptions of people and food and landscapes and problems is just simply beautiful. She has inspired me to be a better writer. I would love to meet her one day.』
(Bella, bella, bella) 『I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Mayes brings you to Tuscany, and you can see and feel the land and people around their home. The recipes are terrific (I've tried several). Bella Tuscany is truly a feel-good book, even when bad things happen. I am of Italian extraction, and visited Sicily (the home of my ancestors) a few years ago, with my nieces. I liked this book so much, I ordered two more and sent them to my nieces, so we could all share the wonderful feeling of the "Sweet Life in Italy". Truly worth the read.』
(Bella Tuscany) 『I had re-read Under the Tuscan sun, I love Frances Mayes style of writting and I love I Italy, I could litterly see it in her writing and when I did see actual pictures it was as I imagined love the book and will re-read it to at some time, have gotten her other 2 books as well』
(Spectacularly Boring) 『I cannot understand why the first book was a best-seller. It was about an ultra-rich, ultra-materialistic women that has only a very superficial understanding of Italy and the Italian people. I bought this book to read for my book club. It was even worse than the first. No more Frances Mayes for me, ever! One of the most self-absorbed authors the book club has ever read. Hope she finds happiness in her eternal quest for the perfect stuff.』 『Following up on her bestselling novel,Under the Tuscan Sun, Frances Mayes returns to her beloved villa in the small hill town of Cortona, Italy. Welcomed back like an old friend, she is soon puttering in the garden, and as Mayes devotees might expect, busy in the kitchen as well. As Mayes rediscovers her taste for la dolce vita, she embarks on a journey of cultural awakening and embraces a newfound romance with the Italian language and people. "I came to Italy expecting adventure," reads Mayes. "What I never anticipated is the absolute sweet joy of everyday life."
Mayes is as generous a cook as she is a writer, flavoring her story with tasty descriptions of local gustatory delights--many of which are included in a small recipe book. She also serves as narrator, and the beguiling simplicity of her voice makes listening as enjoyable as spending an afternoon with a well-traveled favorite aunt. (Running time: 9 hours, 6 cassettes)--George Laney』
『Frances Mayes, whose enchanting #1New York TimesbestsellerUnder the Tuscan Sunmade the world fall in love with Tuscany, invites us back for a delightful new season of friendship, festivity, and food, there and throughout Italy.
A companion volume toUnder the Tuscan Sun, Bella Tuscany is Frances Mayes's passionate and lyrical account of her continuing love affair with Italy. Now truly at home there, Mayes writes of her deepening connection to the land, her flourishing friendships with local people, the joys of art, food, and wine, and the rewards and occasional heartbreaks of her villa's ongoing restoration. It is also a memoir of a season of change, and of renewed possibility. As spring becomes summer she revives her lush gardens, meets the challenges of learning a new language, tours regions from Sicily to the Veneto, and faces transitions in her family life. Filled with recipes from her Tuscan kitchen and written in the sensuous and evocative prose that has become her hallmark,Bella Tuscanyis a celebration of the sweet life in Italy.

I still craved favorites like cupcakes, caramels, cookies, and candies, but most of the flavors just tasted too, too sweet. When I discovered some salty caramels at a high-end shop, and a dark chocolate bar with almonds and a few grains of crunchy salt - I realized what was missing in so many sweets now - a flavor contrast to make the sweet a little less cloying.
This book was an absolute delight to cook from, because all the recipes encourage the use of high-end ingredients (though substitutes are given so every chef can make these treats!), don't use too much sugar, and have the delicious, balancing flavor of salt subtly added to each one.
I loved the fact that none of it was too snooty or out of reach to actually make (Martha gives me pains sometimes with her ability to make a simple frosting into an all-day affair), yet the flavors are deliciously complex and wholesome - well, as wholesome as sweets can be!
The photos made me want to cook from this book, and every recipe I have tried so far has been good. I particularly like the Perfectly Imperfect Pecan Pralines. I also feel like so many of these recipes could be made as a special gift for someone, because they aren't too hard and the flavors are interesting yet not so out-there that Grandma wouldn't like them!
』
(Sweet!) 『Beginning with its explanations of the distinctions between salt varieties, this immediately struck me as a "gourmet" or "foodie" cookbook. (I don't use table salt at home - I use sea salt - but I had no idea there were noticeable flavor differences between salts. A salt snob I am not!) The recipe instructions, however, are down-to-earth and well-written. Apart from the plethora of salts, most of the recipes don't use any gourmet ingredients, either. (One does call for lavender flowers, but it's the only exception I noticed.)
There is a greater variety here than one might expect. Although, as you can probably imagine, the vast majority of the recipes are for desserts, they aren't all. There are one or two beverages, a granola recipe, and a recipe for seasoned popcorn. The desserts cover a wide range, too, from s'mores to fruit-and-cheese pizza, to cupcakes, to candy. Many of them are not really "salty," per se. They just contain a hint of salt to help heighten the flavors of the sweet ingredients.
Some readers will be disappointed that there is not a photo for every recipe. What photos there are, though, are lovely.
Also, one of the recipes is titled "Kickass Carrot Cake," so be aware of that if its inclusion is a deal-breaker for you.』
(a coffee-table style cookbook) 『A collection of recipes for sweets exploring the salty-sweet theme! Not destined to be anyone's one favorite cookbook, perhaps, but an interesting range of culinary ideas to experiment with. A pretty gift, well illustrated.』
(Maybe too good?) 『If you like sweets you'll love this. We are making some of the lower calorie deserts and they are great.』
(Palate-Enticing Treats That Result When Salt and Sugar Collide) 『Sweet and savory combinations have become so au courant that it is quite common to see anachronistic concoctions like salted caramel ice cream and bacon peanut butter brittle on a restaurant menu. In truth, candied walnuts, chocolate-covered pretzels, and boxes of Cracker Jack have been around for at least my generation of snackers. Author Christie Matheson captures this trend with this eminently readable cookbook. She first gives a summary of techniques and a useful primer describing the different types of salt available (including photos). This introduction leads to 75 easy-to-follow recipes over seven chapters. "Little Treats" features basics like Salted Caramels (page 23) and Sweet and Salty Pecans (page 32) and includes more sophisticated temptations like Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt Crostini (page 33) and Cocoa Nib and Dried Cherry Granola (page 41).

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (christmas 2009 present) 『I bought this bike for my 2 year old daughter for Christmas. I was a little worried because i ended up putting it together myself but it was very easy to put together. i did not even use the instructions, just good old common sense and the box as a visual aid. My daughter is 2 years and 4 months and is fairly small for her age(height and bodysize) but the bike is the perfect height for her and pretty too. She is really into Dora but the Dora bike was just to expensive for a name and pic. So i got this one and spruced it up with streamers, a basket,Dora stickers and a Dora helmet and pads set. She loves it and is happy and so am I!!!』
(Not bad, but there's room for improvement.) 『This bike is not bad for the money&cheaper on Amazon (free shipping) than driving to Target to pick it up. My husband assembled it relatively easily. The handlebars arrived scratched--the paint scratched down to the metal. This would easily have been prevented with better packaging. My other complaint is that the training wheels are very delicate and flimsy. I have definately seen bikes with much sturdier training wheels. Our 2 1/2 year-old does love it, however.』 『Your daughter will be the envy of the block on her Huffy Girls So Sweet 12-Inch Bike. The single-speed bike features bold, bright graphics that will make her want to jump on and keep pedaling. It features a colorful butterfly on the handlebar's front plate as well as the seat and crossbar. Designed with safety in mind, it comes with big knobby tires for balance and pads on the crossbar and stems. The thick protective chain guard will keep pants or laces from catching on the chain. The training wheels can stay on until she's ready to ride on her own. Recommended for ages two to five, this ideal first bike is backed by a lifetime warranty on the frame and a six-month warranty on parts.』 『The Huffy(r) So Sweet 12-in girls' bicycle provides a safe, fun, and comfortable ride with a double chain guard, training wheels, and a padded saddle with a logo. The handlebars have a butterfly with colorful "So Sweet" lettering. For additional safety, this bike is padded on the top tube and stem.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Greatest fleece suit) 『I love this fleece suit. Perfect for rides in the stroller or in the backpack. You can cover her hands which is great since mittens always fall off. And she can still wear shoes with it so can walk around. And the price is very reasonable compared to many others out there. It washes well and is nice and cozy.』
(Cozy coverup) 『Nice for infants - easy to use, even with a squirming little one! This has kept our grandson warm on these winter nights (8 months, 21 lbs!!)』
(Keeps my baby warm!) 『I LOVE this outfit and I get so many compliments on it. Since big coats make my baby too hot and are cumbersome (and aren't safe in carseats anyways), this is perfect when I take my baby out. I dress him in layers and then I put him in this bunting and we're good to go! Great for when you just need a warm outfit to transfer baby from house to car to grocery store, etc.
As other reviewers state, this will not keep your baby warm is extremely cold weather. But that's fine for me - I rarely have my baby outside for longer than 5 minutes anyways. If you need an outfit that will be good in the snow, buy an actual snowsuit instead.』
(Cozy, for your little snow bunny!) 『We bought this item for our 1 year old. After reading reviews I noticed most people said the bunting runs small so I bought an 18 months. It fits my small 12 month old perfectly! It will easily see him through winter and into spring. It is very soft and cozy. I put my toddler in it, full clothed. He has room inside without it being too tight or restricting him. My favorite part is the hand and feet openings. My son can use his hands while in the car and I can easily cover them right up when getting out into the cold winter air. Perfect fleece bunting!!』
(Great - love it!) 『I bought this to put on my 7 month old for when we go out in the cold weather. The fleece is warm, yet not too bulky. The attached hood fits nicely around her head. She typically fits into 12-18 mo clothes so I did get this in a size 24 months which was perfect. It's a little big now so she can wear it all winter and it's not tight with her winter clothes on.』 『Columbia Sportswear Snowtop Bunting IIfor Infants: The Columbia Sportswear Snowtop Bunting II for Infants will swaddle your baby in cozy warmth. This bunting will relax and soothe your child on cool morning strolls and other cool weather activities with MTR polyester microfleece and fold-over flaps to protect hands and feet from the cold. It's full cut hood stays in place with an elastic hem which helps to trap in valuable heat, as does the 17 inch snag-free zipper's draft flap. Keep you kiddies warm in the winter with these fun printed fleece hideaway!』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not poofy) 『Pros: The petticoat was made fine, craftsmanship was not lacking. Clean fast shipping. Cons: It was teeny only a couple layers was more of a slip than a petticoat and the pictures on the page were misleading to this effect.
