I purchased this album years ago, now, but do, in truth, come back to it very often for the soul stirring that only the trumpet can give you. While I (and probably many) normally do not think about the trumpet (or brass at all, for that matter) very much, it is, truly, lovely, filling sound that stirs one like no other type of instrument(s).
Soundwise, there is NO DOUBT that this fabulous disc is DEMONSTRATION-Quality...put it on your system and turn it up, and you will certainly agree with me on this point. And the acoustic is simply stunning...you'll see!
While this entire album is just superb, I want to be sure to point two things out to you.
The first is the Mouret "1st Suite in D" excerpt, more commonly known to most as the "theme" from Masterpiece Theater. Here, with this acoustic, simply stunning!
The second is the Deeply Moving Alan Hohvaness piece "The Prayer of St. Gregory". I defy one to find a more deeply reflective, moving, piece of music--anywhere. Simply touching, clear to the depths of your soul. Trust me.
A short story for those who may appreciate it. When I lived in Washington DC, I regularly went to the Sunday afternoon organ concerts at the National Cathedral. Of course, for those who know, you sit surrounded by the pipes (if you choose). In late summer of 2005 I was at one of these concerts, and to my delight, "Prayer of St. Gregory" was on the program. This has long been a very much-loved piece to me. Well, the trumpet soloist was located way up to the entrance, between the last pews. As the trumpet made its entrance in the piece, the sun hit the right position to strike the rose window, and it splayed its multi-colored bits all over the inside of the cathedral, increasing temporarily with the rising of the trumpet. I was moved to trembling with this, and after the concert, I spoke to a couple who had sat near me, and they said the same thing, in fact the lady said she had started to cry. When these things happen like this, does it not reaffirm our belief that there is, indeed, some higher being, who presents such great stirring beauty to us?

(A ceremony in sound) 『This is a beautifully performed CD of ceremonial music of the Christian tradition. While organist Michael Murray talks about the diversity of kinds of ceremonial music in the liner notes essay, the musical selection here is drawn from the Western Christian tradition with few exceptions.
Sometimes the music did not start out as ceremonial in nature - Murray points out that the 'Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night's Dream' is now considered traditional wedding-march music, whereas at one time it considered completely inappropriate.
Music is drawn from the past four hundred years - works of well-known composers such as Purcell, Handel, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Bach are collected here, together with lesser-known composers such as Paradis, Mouret, Charpentier, Clarke and Martini, famous and respected in their day, but less known as personalities now (although their music will undoubtedly sound very familiar to the listener with any exposure to Western music). The CD also includes a few pieces from modern composers such as the French Charles Gounod, the British Ralph Vaughan Williams, and the American Alan Hovhaness.
Organist Michael Murray and trumpeter Rolf Smedvig make a dynamic duo in this celebratory music. Murray plays the symphonic organ from the First United Methodist Church of Cleveland (I've been in that church for a concert, and it is grand indeed). Smedvig is a Grammy nominee for his work with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, serving on the faculty of Boston University and Tanglewood. Murray has had a worldwide career of recitals, being a frequent guest of orchestras, and often sought to inaugurate grand organs upon their installation.
This is a grand disc, a ceremony in sound, and a wonderful piece to have in one's collection. 』

(THE FINEST FANTASIA ON COMPACT DISC!) 『This is the second time that I am purchasing this performance of the Fantasia on Christmas Carols. Back when this recording was first released, there was a problem with "CD Rot", namely the compact discs were not pressed properly and therefore deteriorated over time. Though this is no longer a problem, my aged CD finally succumbed to the blight and is no longer playable. But I cannot live without this performance of the Fantasia on Christmas Carols because it is by far the most enjoyable Holiday listening experience that I have ever found. What stands this performance above the rest is not only the emotional investment that Best and his forces put in the work, but the clarity of the winds and brass are excellent. When the baritone sings "God bless the Ruler of this house...", and comes to the line "God bless our Generation who lives both far and near..", there is some delightfully jaunty woodwind writing that only Vaughan Williams could create. These woodwinds are clearly heard in this recording as most times, they are lost in the orchestra. But it is when the orchestra swells and the bells toll that the chorus repeats what the baritone sang. When they sing "God bless our Generation who live both far and near.." it is the brass section that repeats the jaunty woodwind theme. At that moment, if you do not have a chill running down your spine, and perhaps even a tear of joy grace your cheek, then I do not know when such a musical moment will do it for you. So, I only hope I get this recording before the end of the Christmas season because I will sorely miss this performance if I do not. Enthusiastically Recommended!』
(Fantasia on Christmas Carols) 『I only listened to the Fantasia on Christmas Carols in depth at this moment in time. Sir Thomas Allen is superb in his interpretation of this choral masterpiece. He lives up to his reputation as one of the great British baritones of all times. He is able to express the baritone solo with superb musicianship and nuance. This is a challenging piece for choruses. It demands a level of musicianship which should not be attempted by amateur choirs. The choir is also superb and follows the composers dynamics respectively. I highly recommend the CD if you are only interested in this work. It's worth it.

(what a setting of Shakespeare!) 『How sweet the singers weave in and out of Serenade to Music! In line after line, Vaughan Williams amazingly goes from low register to high climax in short spans and phrases. 'How many things by season seasoned are' is a hair raising vocal line, while the pianissimos on 'harmony' are pure musical genius, and stunningly performed by the soloist. This is great composing given a definitive performance. I enjoy the other pieces on this recording, but I must confess that Flos Campi goes over my head like a low flying plane, and I just don't get it. But you must not go through life without listening to the Serenade - it ranks with his Lark Ascending and Tallis Fantasia for sheer beauty.』
(Small, endearing masterpieces from the twilight of empire) 『English society was still so secure in the imperial twilight (1910-40) that native composers could afford to ignore the revolution mounted by Schonberg, Webern, Berg, and Stravinsky, not to mention lesser modernists. Vaughan Williams is too lovable a compser to criticize for being a musical reactionary, and here we get some of his most endearing works for solo voices and chorus. The intent behind this Serenade to Music was to duplicate, as much as possible, the 16 stellar soloists for whome V-W wrote the work. That was already done, in truth, by Leonard Bernstien at the opening of Philharmonic Hall in 1962 with the likes of Jon Vickers, George London, Richard Tucker, and Eileen Farrell, to thrilling effect. Best's reading is quite low-key, mellifluous, and gentle by comparison.
His one world-class singer is Thomas Allen, who appears to splendid effect in V-W's haunting Five Mystical Songs to texts by George Herbert, which he sets as wonderfully as he set Shakespeare in the Serenade. The Corydon Singers have nothing to do in the Serenade but are vigorous and expert in the rest of the program, which includes the 12-min. Fantasia on Christmas Carols, again with Thomas Allen in great form, and Flos Campi with Nobuko Imai as the expressive viola soloist. The Christmas carols mostly sound serious and religious, in keeping with the Five Mystical Songs.
In all, Allen is the star here; the works themselves are essential V-W, each a small masterpiece that deserves to be better known in the U.S. Four staars for the Serenade, five for Allen's work.』 『Not only is this album an essential compilation for Vaughan Williams fans, but it's also a treat for anyone who loves beautiful choral music--from the popular and unabashedly romanticSerenade to Music, properly performed here with eight solo singers, to the rarely recordedFantasia on Christmas Carols. (The last one) 『Of these 12 songs, you'll get the 45 version of "Love is Like Oxygen" from Sweet, which is fine. The album version is nothing spectacular and I think is seldom ever played anyway. There are lots of great obscurities here but nothing really fantastic. Rhino was definitely clutching at straws to put this collection together but it's not nearly as bad as Volume 24. In fact, if Volumes 24 and 25 were reversed, I'd just get rid of Volume 24, because although nothing seemed to be really butchered on volume 24 (except Chuck Mangione's hit), most of the tracks of Volume 24 are Rhino's worse gathering of the Seventies obscure hits. But, that's my opinion. I've generally favored the earlier seventies pop over the later seventies, anyway.
However, for Volume 25, my favorites are "Falling" by LeBlanc and Carr, "My Angel Baby" by Toby Beau, "Lead Me On' by Maxine Nightengale, and definitely "Oh Well" (the old Fleetwood Mac classic) by The Rockets. 』

As very low budget horror films go, it's pretty decent, but it hasn't aged particularly well as a film. Margot Kidder's performance is the best part of the film. I find the homage to Hitchcok wearing at times, and if you compare this to Hitch's contemporary film, Frenzy, De Palma is clearly very much the apprentice. Even so, there's more than enough creepiness to go around here and it's fun to watch, which is a lot more than you can say for many other films.』
(Great suspense!!!) 『Awesome thriller. Will remind Hitchcock. Losely based on some true facts. Has some intense scenes mid-way when it its all clear to the viewers. Terrific start. End may not be the best. A Must watch, buy if you can view thriller again and again.

(Does your sister have issues like this?) 『This is a great film! Although the acting is a bit rough for a few characters I found myself drawn into the story line. We have Danielle Breton (Margot Kidder) has a one-night stand with a black TV-game show player. The morning after, he is killed by Danielle's psycho twin sister, Dominique Blanchion. But Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt), an aspiring journalist, sees everything from her flat across the street. Things get even uglier when the journalist starts following Danielle and his strange ex-husband, Dr. Emil Breton (De Palma perennial weirdo Bill Finley). What dark secret lies behind this murder? Uh? Of course, nobody really seems to care about the plot - De Palma plays the genre rules, twisting every second with his split screen techniques and neat suspense touches. There is a "dream" sequence, some blood, a hideous scar, drugs and a birthday cake.
Sure, the movie owes more than a passing nod to Psycho (Collector's Edition) and Rear Window (Collector's Edition)specifically, but De Palma's exhilarating use of that split-screen technique as well as Margot Kidder's creepy performance add up to a genuinely frightening experience. The "peeping tom" opening is brilliant. The humor doesn't lessen the shock, but rather enhances it by keeping the audience continually caught off guard. He takes the most vulnerable and receptive of human reactions--laughter, fear, and anticipation--and pushes them to their extremes until the audience is caught up in giddy bewilderment. You don't know what the director is going to pull next, so you can't prepare yourself.
De Palma is nothing if not a visceral filmmaker, and in his comfort with the comic and the horrific, he resembles Roman Polanski more than he does Hitchcock. Taking into consideration their mutually varied filmographies and how they've been received, it seems a more apt comparison. The one major difference is that Polanski has a deep sense of the tragic, and almost always ends on that note. Not so much De Palma. In the final scene in Sisters, we find Charles Durning's private dick, who had all but disappeared from the movie, high up on a telephone pole dressed as an electrician, dutifully watching a couch through a pair of binoculars. The movie is over in every way--the blood has been shed, the mystery has been solved, and the suspense is gone--except that it apparently isn't. De Palma wants to leave us with something else. So we have Durning waiting to see who comes to get the couch. This could well be that Shock Recovery Period that the movie posters promoted. This was another great film that was highly recommended by Chris and the one only #1 Depalma fan R.A. Bean which I greatly enjoyed. 』
(DePalma's Psychotic Siamese Sisters...) 『In 1973, after spending the last few years making great independant films like "Murder a La Mod", "The Wedding Party", "Greetings", and "Hi, Mom!", Brian Depalma was put on the map as the new Master Of Suspense with his first 'mainstream' film, "Sisters", a very demented, deranged, twisted, psychological horror film that rivals even the best of todays top thrillers. He uses themes that would continue throughout his career in this film: The doppleganger, split personalities, multiple personality disorder(s), mistaken identity, voyuerism, and horrorfying psychological madness and muder and mayhem. And sinister satire! The film starts as a game show "Peeping Toms" is being played out before a live audience. The contestant on the show, a young black man named Philip Woode (Lisle Wilson), and the guest 'prankster', a model named Danillele Breton (Margot Kidder in her BEST performance ever). After the show is over, Philip recieves a gift card which is a ticket for two to have a free dinner at an African themed restaraunt, and for Danielle's participation on the show, she recieves a very nice set of steak knives (establishing sterotypes and irony in one set piece). They attend dinner together, where they are followed by Danielle's ex-husband, Emil Breton (William Finley), but he is removed from the restaraunt; so they have a very nice dinner together, then go to Danielle's to spend the night together. As they are making out, we are shown a very large, ugly scar on Danielle's thigh.?.?. The next morning, there is loud yelling from the next room, someone calling out "Danielle! Danielle!" in a very impatient voice that awakens Danielle, who goes to respond, having a conversation, one person speaking French, and Danielle in French-English (the accent she has throughout the entire film); then coming back and telling Philip that it was her sister, well, her twin sister, Dominique, and she is upset because today is their birthday, and she wanted to spend the day together, and is upset that Danielle has a man in the apartment. Philip gets dressed, and goes to the local pharmacy for Danielle to pick up a prescription for her, and in the meantime he drops by a local bakery and buys a birthday cake for the twin sisters, Dominique and Danielle. When he returns to the apatment, he is murdered in a very shocking scene that I will not detail for I don't wanna spoil it for people who haven't seen the film. From a window in a buiding next to Danielle's apartment building, a young female reporter, Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt) witnesses the entire muder in an awesome split screen scene that DePalma first employed in this film; and, in which he uses effectively in a few more scenes. She calls the cops, there is an investigation, but no body is found, but this is when Grace starts noticing signs and/or clues that Danielle may have a sister, a TWIN sister, and all is not what it appears to be; so, she hires a private detective, Joseph Larch (Charles Durning). He finds a folder that has files on the Blanchion twins, an infamous story about two Siamese twins who got seperated about a year before, so Grace investigates the story further by seeking out the top reporter that was there during the operation, Mr. McClennon (Bernard Hughes), who tells Grace that Dominique died on the operating table.?.?.?. And, this leads Grace, who in her (God bless her heart) naivete, and stubborness, and her drive to someday be a 'respected' journalist, on a search that ends in a psychological/sinister/demented/deranged/almost psychodelic/hypnotic/kaleidoscopic/bloody climax that will leave you utterly stunned, breathless, and scared witless! And, the final twist at the end, where a particular character is watching a particular item through binoculars until the cows (literally) come home is awesome and utterly hilarious, but also very bone chilling all the same. Of special mention: DePalma cast Jennifer Salt's real-life mother, Mary Davenport as Grace's mother. One of the cops was played by Dolph Sweet, who is remembered for his role on the tv sitcom "Gimme A Break". And, the awesome score was done by the great Bernard Herrmann, who DePalma got to come out of retirement to do, and who went on to score DePalma's "Obsession". And, DePalma originally wanted to get bigger name stars for the roles of Grace and Philip: He wanted to get Marlo Thomas to play Grace, and Sydney Poitner to play Philip, but due to budget constraints, and/or other reasons, that never came to fuition, which in my opinion is a good thing, because what may have appeared as a good idea on paper, I don't think would have worked as well on screen. Jennifer Salt (who had been in DePalma's "The Wedding Party" and "Hi, Mom!") was born for this role, and Lisle Wilson gave a very topnotch performance as the 'male Janet Leigh'. This is a very great mixture of genres, mainly horror and satire, and something that will stick in the recesses of your mind and stay there for days and days to come, and haunt you on a very deep scale. As one reviewer on here put it, this isn't DePalma's first film, but in many ways, it is the first 'Brian DePalma film'. Easily in the same league as "Psycho", "Halloween", "Suspiria", "Rosemary's Baby", "Repulsion", and referencing such greats as "Rope", "Rear Window", "Psycho", and "The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari", this is a very timeless classic masterpiece that will rival anything in its genre that you've ever seen! And, why Margot Kidder didn't have every award there is thrown at her for her performance is a crime, for she is show stopping in this. Currently, there is a remake of this trying to get thatrical disribution...AVOID it!!! This is the ONLY version of "Sisters" you'll ever want and/or need to see! Thank you&happy Halloween! ;-)』
(Siamese Twins with a French-Canadian Twist) 『Watching the 'Special Features' section on Siamese Twins on the DVD, they make it look like the director wanted to pay homage to Siamese Twins in general. However, this film is far from it. If you always thought of Siamese Twins as sort of freaky/weird, then heres your chance to think of them as functionally delusional and hysterically dysfunctional as well. In this case, this works for the movie, but in real life does a disservice to the noble, yet troubled life plaguing many real life Siamese Twins.
Margot Kidder (with the most over the top Quebecois accent this side of Montreal) is wonderful in a role that doesn't shy away from showing her in an unflattering physical light. It is clear that this is a woman whose charms are enhanced by make-up alone, and she plays this card to the hilt. As one half of a Siamese Twin couple that were surgically separated, Margot plays Danielle, a mentally disturbed young woman who takes on her sisters' persona once her sister died on the surgical table during their separation process. Due to this, Danielle becomes a pathological killer with a penchant for blood, but of course when she 'comes to' she can't remember any of it. How convenient.
The director deals with all sorts of interesting issues here. Push through the intelligent script and you'll find a subtle irony in how the movie deals with racism (still very perceptible in 1973 when the movie was shot), to the bleakness of modern urban and suburban life, where 'Peeping Toms' are virtually you and I (better executed in the recent 'Disturbia').
The final shot of the film alienated many core fans of the movie to that point, as it seemed to many viewers as nonsensical and idiotic. Its sort of funny, actually, and reduces the movie from being a serious crime-noir to becoming a more pedestrian comedy. This minor flaw apart, the rest of the film plays out wonderfully. The now-famous 'split screen' effect first found its roots' here (yes, it was done in other films too, but this was the first time so much of it was used, and to great effect, even with overlapping dialogue).
The posters and adverts for this portray 'Sisters' as a companion of sorts to another thriller - 'Pscyho'. While I wouldn't go that far, this movie does have its scary moments and charms. To its' credit, I can say that I was never once bored or irritated by its' slow and languid pace. And even though Margot Kidder is not a great actress, the director knows exactly how to use her. Especially disturbing is her epileptic seizure once she commits murder in her bedroom. You will definitely be quite moved by this scene, one way or the other.
"Sisters" is a cinematic achievement that may or may not work for you. If you like most of DePalma's later work, don't even compare this to those films as its so very different. Its also quite dated compared to other films of the same genre from the same era. However, you cannot deny the slick direction, cool dialogue, and smart performances from all the leads (especially the nosy reporter neighbor).
Criterion's DVD is a fine transfer as always, though not as great as some of their other more recent transfers. I had a huge problem with the extras here, though, as most of them seemed an afterthought. For example, the feature on Siamese Twins is not a documentary or anything - just scans of an article from a magazine. I could get this off the Internet if I wanted to. Can't really call this a special feature. The poster section is mildly interesting, but since they're mostly the same poster in different lettering, theres really not much watchability in this regard.
For both the film and DVD, I give a generous three stars. This movie may not be a classic, but its a fine addition to the crime-mystery genre nonetheless. And while this is a let down in terms of extras (by Criterion standards - I had the same issue with their edition of "Le Samourai"), the film is good enough to stand on its' own. Go into this one with minimal expectations, and it makes fine viewing for a lazy Sunday afternoon. And try not to take the other five star reviews on this page too seriously. Its not a five star film by any means.

(Best film/Worst DVD) 『I've just found joy....I'm as happy as a baby boy...Finally! I have waited for a decade and a half for this film to get a digital release. I've written letters to Angelika...all without response. And here it is...with a completely inappropriate cover! Don't let the bad cover put you off. This is a great film. It pays homage to the end an era that is sadly no longer around. (I know this for sure...a few years ago, I went on a pilgrimage to the location of filming, The Heiden Hotel. Even then, it was in very sad shape. I recently read that it was sold and I have no doubt that it will be razed.)
But here, on film, the Heiden lives on as the wonderful Hotel Lorraine. Directed by the son-in-law of the Heiden's owners, Sweet Lorraine celebrates the final season of a decades old Catskill resort. It hosts a gaggle of future stars before they became regular faces on shows like The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Remember When as well as the wonderful Maureen Stapleton as hotelkeeper, Lillian Garber.
Perhaps the best reason to view this film is that it captures summer...starting with the anticipation of Memorial Day and Molly's eagerness to join the family business to the somberness of Labor Day and the developer's final offer. It overflows with affection for the era and for the subject. If you have a sweet spot for summer vacations and nostalgia, this is the film for you.
I've seen Sweet Lorraine over 50 times and I've worn out 3 vhs tapes. I've shown it to my high school students in Japan. I've ripped the theme song and put it on my iPod. OK...so maybe you won't go as far over the top as I did, but you'll be happy you spent the summer at Sweet Lorraine.

The stories are taken directly from the International Children's Bible. Each story is two pages long. At the end of each story is a devotion, followed by a short prayer, a promise or a praise.
The prayers are intended for encouraging girls to develop the habit of talking with God through prayer at the end of the day. An example: "Lord, please forgive me when I have an unthankful heart. I want you to know that I am THANKFUL for you and your goodness to me!"
The promises are short notes about God's promises. An example: "God still speaks to his Princesses through the Bible and through our quiet times of PRAYER and praise!"
The praises are little blessings to help girls think about all the blessings in their life and praise God for them. An example: "Dear God, you created the world and all that is in it. Nothing is too difficult for you!"
The artwork starts with the cover. It is bright pink with a jeweled crown (fake jewels set into the cover) sitting on a puffy pink pillow (a piece of stuffed fabric in the shape of a pillow glued onto the cover). The pages alternate in different pastel colors with various borders and stars and flowers sprinkled throughout.

Age Appeal: The publisher suggests 4-8 as the intended age group for this book. Most kids in this age group would need the stories read to them. I think girls as old as 10 would enjoy a Bible story book like this one.
