The curved contour definitely allows you to spread butter on corn but it also makes it more difficult to spread butter on flatter surfaces like waffles and toast. That's what I wanted the spreader for. It is also pretty difficult to push out the refrigerated butter. It might be easier with room temperature butter but I haven't tried that yet.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Arguably, the greatest; inarguably, none better.) 『For some of us who became aware of jazz in the late '50s, Benny Goodman's was soon a familiar name as well as sound, thanks to the late discovery of the complete Carnegie Hall Concert, tailor-made for the still relatively new LP format and widely distributed to members of the Columbia Record Club. Moreover, Benny was in all the jazz history books--the King of Swing, the virtual inventor of jazz/big band swing (the famous Palomar Ballroom stand in August of 1935), his bringing legitimacy to this once "lowbrow" music, his bringing racial integration to the music, his phenomenal small groups with Teddy Wilson, Hampton and Krupa. Recently, Downbeat Magazine explained how its own history was directly correlated with Goodman's and the sound of American jazz.
As a result, Artie Shaw was little more than a shadowy figure, someone better known for being a playboy with eight wives than his clarinet playing, which some of us assumed must have been a kind of secondary hobby. But sometime in the 1980s I started talking to old-timers about Artie Shaw, and his name came up repeatedly as #1, moreover as a musician responsible for perhaps the most perfect recording of Hoagy's "Stardust." After picking up this CD, then going to the brand-new Mosaic set, I became a believer. Not only was he "not" a playboy; he was a perfectionist, experimenter, innovator, and a workaholic with standards and expectations of himself second to none. His walking away from the music for good in 1954 was, as much as anything, an admission that he had given it all he had, was convinced that he couldn't take the music any further, and most significantly didn't care all that much what his fans or the critics and historians would have to say. Why should he care about history? He managed to outlive most of it as it is.
In many respects, he was the spitting image of Goodman--virtually the same age, from a poor working-class Jewish family, New York sideman, followed by swing era star status and the Hollywood treatment (but no feature-length biopic--another reason he didn't become known to many of us as did Benny. In other respects, he was the exact opposite. Goodman was frequently characterized as the somewhat "square," absent-minded professor who he could still play as precise and as hot as anyone; Shaw, on the other hand, was the matinee star, dark and mysterious, exotic and romantic--like his tone. Goodman just sought mastery and perfection, then played for the joy of it, preserving much of the spirit of New Orleans and later prohibition-era Chicago jazz; Shaw had a flair for the dramatic, and he became a musical Valentino or Byron who intentionally sought to advance the music. Benny could excite and impress; Shaw could mesmerize and enfold you in a developing musical narrative.
In short, simply compare Benny's theme, "Let's Dance,"--sunny, innocuous, inviting--with Shaw's theme, "Nightmare"--funereal, dark, brooding, the stuff of film noir like "The Big Sleep" or "Out of the Past." Benny is Walt Disney; Shaw is Hitchock. Some of his music from 1941 sounds like the "3rd stream" projects of Gunther Schuller and the Modern Jazz Quartet 20 years later.
The present record gets 4 stars because it omits Shaw's number one hit, his all-time best-seller, "Frenesi," and also passes up another million-seller (besides Frenesi, Stardust, and Begin the Beguine): "Dancing in the Dark." Still, I'll concede that the omission of these two tracks need not be seen as a betrayal of the meaning denoted by the title of this collection. It's all superb clarinet playing by an indisputable genius: what more could you expect from an artist who could manage five bands, eight wives, and still be as much of a perfectionist and harsh critic of himself as the music has known.』
(Greatest Clarinet player of ALL TIME!!) 『Artie Shaw in my opinion is the greatest clarinet and band leader of all time. His own unique style comes out of his music. I loved the entire CD, but, especially "Concerto for Clarinet, Parts 1 and 2. You can hear the fun that they were having while playing.
Artie Shaw gave his clarinet a life of its own.』
(Artie Shaw by Artie Shaw) 『This wonderful CD entitled The Very Best Of Artie Shaw contains 18 great hits hand picked by Shaw himself. Shaw was a prolific recording artist with a crew that could swing like no other! This CD proves it.
The CD opens with "Any Old Time" featuring Billie Holiday singing with Artie Shaw on clarinet with his crew knocking 'em dead! This beautiful ballad starts the track set with strength and it holds your attention well. "Rosalie" follows "Any Old Time;" this song has Tony Pastor doing the vocals and the melody is every bit as classic as the one for "Any Old Time." It REALLY swings and you are bound to enjoy this if this is your kind of music! Awesome! Moreover, "Deep Purple" is sung flawlessly by the great Helen Forrest as Artie and His Orchestra provide a marvelous musical arrangement.
Other gems on this CD include the classic standard called "Star Dust" by Carmichael and Parish; Artie's horns and strings do a lot to enhance the beauty of this number as they perform a sensitive yet strong musical arrangement. "My Blue Heaven" gives us another instrumental track recorded at The Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City in 1939; and this number shines like a golden nugget in the brightest light ever! "'S Wonderful" gets the royal treatment with Artie once again on clarinet and Roy Eldridge on trumpet. The sound quality on this track is particularly good, too.
I also like this CD because there are three tracks recorded and broadcast live from The Hotel Pennsylvania in New York: "Everything Is Jumpin';" "My Blue Heaven" and "Diga Diga Doo." These tracks give us a certain spontaneity and zest that you don't always hear in a recording made in a studio.
"Begin The Beguine" is yet another classic instrumental penned by Cole Porter; and Artie Shaw and His Orchestra do a wonderful job of delivering this number.
The CD ends with the very upbeat "Diga Diga Doo;" this number will make you want to jump up and dance anywhere you happen to be! Dave Barbour is on the guitar but the horns carry the bulk of this melody.
The liner notes include all the song credits and Loren Schoenberg contributes an extensive, informative essay about Artie's career and personal life. The art work is very good; but on several of the tracks there is some surface noise. I had hoped not to suffer from any surface noise on a CD in this day and age; the remastering job was not well done. Therefore I must take off a star to make this a four star review.
Artie Shaw remains one of the greatest talents of the entire 20th century. His artistry can never be truly forgotten. I highly recommend this CD for Artie Shaw fans and fans of classic swing music. People who enjoy classic pop vocals will also enjoy the tracks that feature Billie Holiday, Tony Pastor and Helen Forrest.

(One of the best single-CD albums of Artie Shaw -- genius!) 『This is one of the best single CDs available of music by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra. Shaw was one of the great innovators of swing jazz of the 1930s and 1940s, always seeking artistic ways to express himself as a clarinet player and a bandlear, despite the heavy commercial pressures he faced (he frequently broke apart his bands when he could no longer tolerate the `business' side of the music business). This CD contains a wide variety of selections that Shaw picked himself. They contain music from his three major bands: the 1938-39 band that was the most popular musical group in the country for those two years, the enormous 1940-42 band (with a large string section), and the little-appreciated 1944-45 band.
I personally think that the Artie Shaw collection "Begin the Beguine" (available on the RCA Bluebird label) is a bit stronger than this one, with a focus on more of his hits from the 1938-39 band -- as an album, it swings much harder -- but the variety here is greater, and the sound quality somewhat better. Since the two CDs share only five tracks in common, I advise buying both. They're both inexpensive, so it's a good deal.

The 1938-39 tracks are the strongest, with "Begin the Beguine" still a towering classic of smooth, beautiful swing. The three live tracks are fabulous and show the band getting loose and extreemly jazzy in front of a crowd of crazed dancers. It's also wonderful to hear the band's two primary vocalists, Tony Pastor (also a sax player) and Helen Forrest, sing two of the band's signature numbers.
Of the other numbers, "Summertime" is a real stunner. Taken from the Gershwin opera "Porgy and Bess," it has an incredible Shaw solo and a heavy, soulful power. The lengthy "Concerto for Clarinet" may have a dull title, but it's a fast jumpin' number with awesome solos. The same goes for "Two in One Blues." Another classic solo on clarinet from Artie Shaw appears on "Star Dust," a song he recorded often.
Artie Shaw is really an American treasure, showing a rare blending of popular music with jazz genius, and this CD offers up the genius in an affordable package (and grab the collection "Begin the Beguine" and you'll have a full Artie Shaw experience -- and probably still be begging for more!)』

I was searching online for a recording of my favorite Russian folk song, "Ochi Chernye" ("Dark Eyes"), and came across a video of Sophie Milman performing a delightful jazz arrangement of the song. I instantly fell in love with this wonderful singer. I quickly searched for other music by her, and was impressed with each song I heard. After listening repeatedly to several of her recordings, including the songs on this CD, I can say with some confidence that she has become one of my all-time favorite jazz vocalists. If you're into vocal jazz and the old pop standards, do yourself a favor and give a listen to Sophie Milman. From Brazilian bossa nova (Tom Jobim's "Agua De Beber"), to French cabaret songs (Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose"), to Broadway showtunes (Sondheim&Bernstein's "I Feel Pretty"), to playful pop standards (Cole Porter's "My Heart Belongs to Daddy"), and more -- Sophie Milman has a broad (and multilingual) repertoire, which she handles with masterful skill and magnificent style. She is truly a delight to the ears (and also a delight to the eyes). I highly recommend this, her debut CD. There is only one thing about this CD that I found somewhat disappointing: The version of "Ochi Chernye" on this disc is not the same arrangement as the wonderful jazz version in the video that first introduced me to Sophie Milman. I hope I can find a recording of that delightful jazz arrangement of the song. Nonetheless, I would certainly recommend this CD to anyone who loves good vocal jazz.』

This is my very first Sophie Milman CD and most definitely will not be the last! I'm truly impressed with her outstanding vocal flair and style. She has an extensive vocal range and her phrasing is crisp and crystal-clear. She's now among my newest favorite jazz singers whom I call in my jazz vocabulary the second generation jazz divas, next to the original divas - Ella, Sarah, et al.
Released in 2004, this self-titled debut album of Sophie Milman is utterly charming and stunningly beautiful with an impeccable choice of material that represents some of the greatest composers and lyricists of all-time, from George and Ira Gershwin, Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields to Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim and Antonio Carlos Jobim.
All the tracks are sure winners! Her heartfelt take on my all-time favorite "La Vie En Rose" alone is enough reason to own this elegant CD. Listen closely with your undivided attention as she sings this lovely song in its original setting in French with its enthralling instrumentation especially the striking bridge solo. To make it short, it is simply splendid!

She does more than justice to Jobim's "Agua de Beber" with a jazz fusion arrangement but still remains true to its Bossa Nova rhythm. While she's jazzing it up with "I Can't Give You Anything But Love," she slows it down with two meaningful songs, "Guilty" and a classic from George and Ira Gershwin, "The Man I Love" featuring an ear-candy harmonica solo by Guido Basso. Then she does a sparkling rendition of "My Heart Belongs To Daddy," one of my favorites tracks.
The exceptional talents of the musicians involved in this recording cannot be left unnoticed -- Bill King and John Sheard (piano), Alan Hetherington (percussion), Marc Rogers and Artie Roth (bass), Davide DiRenzo (drums), Pat La Barbera (alto sax), Phil Dywer (tenor sax) and Guido Basso (harmonica), among others. I would say that Ms. Milman is a "musician's singer" for she displays a very good rapport with her back-up team, who all show a great interplay amongst themselves.
Listening to this CD is equivalent to having my favorite dessert -- every song is a sweet delight! So adorn your jazz collection with this elegant and irresistible CD. I will certainly recommend her sophomore CD, Make Someone Happy, which after its initial release hits the # 4 spot in the Billboard Jazz charts.

It's not a perfect film but it evokes the rhythm and atmosphere of the time. Forget Coppola, look at folks like Julie Harris, Rip Torn and Karen Black. Revel in the weirdness of sixties poetry, drama and interior decoration. Beyond all that, revel in the performance of Peter Kastner, at once likable and pathetic. He never seemed to garner the recognition he deserved; forever to wear the albatross of "The Ugliest Girl In Town" around his neck.

(The First Half Excells) 『About 15 minutes into this quirky film I was ready to proclaim it a must see and to bill it as the best movie no one has seen or even heard about. After all it was Coppola's masters thesis for film school. It has Elizabeth Hartman successfully playing against type as a sexy (somewhat psycho) Greenwich Village ingénue. It has Peter Kastner, Rip Torn, Geraldine Page and Julie Harris playing characters as bizarre as those in "Harold and Maude" (it reminds you a lot of that film and may have inspired it). It has Karen Black doing a toned down version of the Rayette Dipesto character she would play in "Five Easy Pieces". It has a lively sound track by the Lovin' Spoonful. It even has Coppola cutting in extensive gruesome footage from his first film "Dementia 13".
Unfortunately by the halfway point of "You're a Big Boy Now" it runs out of steam and you begin to understand its obscurity. Coppola's script is the problem because the cast are generally excellent and you can tell they had a lot of fun making the film. Even minor cast members like Dolph Sweet do a good job and there are great little sequences like Kastner's after dark explorations of the New York City streets. But unlike "Herald and Maude", Coppola says nothing with this film; consequently it ends up as a classic case of the whole being considerably less than the sum of its parts.
This is not Coppola's best stuff but is worth checking out if you like Hartman, Harris, and Page.

(Excellent Job, Francis Cappolla) 『I just want to say that "You're a Big Boy Now", is one of my all time favorite movies. Cheesy? Yes. Entertaining? Absolutely. I first watched it back in 1989 (I was 19 years old, Bernard's age) and in a way I related to Bernard. Growing up and moving into my own apartment and what not.
Bernard's mother (Geraldine Paige) reminds me so much of my mother. Over-nurturing, over protective and nosey (sorry Mom.) The acting in this movie is absolutely wonderful. Even "Dog" (yes, that's the name of Bernard's dog) did a good job in this film. This is a must see!』
(Really good movie, much better than The Conversation.) 『I think this movie is one of Coppola's best, since there is no confusing drama/mystery in it(The Conversation). The plot is that a man has just moved out of his home and is going out with a girl he knew in high school. However, he also falls for a go-go dancer at a club the two go to. The movie is slightly dated, but it makes up for it with charm, espiecially the music. The acting is superb, and it's just a funny movie. I believe Coppola made this for his thesis at UCLA, I'm not quite sure. It's still good, so check it out.』
(I.T. for Incredibly Tremendous) 『Sure, one can dissect this film the way a film-dissector dissects films. Throw those dissections away, though, and watch this film for the pure beauty of writing, acting, direction, score, cinematography, and genuine zaniness of ecclectica that ensues from the very opening scene til the last. I love this movie for everything that it offers and everything that a film-dissector says it could never offer. To me, it is a cult classic - it cannot be dissected like any other flick.
P.S. My favorite scene, other than all of them in general, is when Bernard sees Barbara Darling dance for the first time at the Go-Go club. It's as raw and real as life gets, or at least got at that time. Man alive, this movie gets 6 stars on a 5-star basis.』

The picture's a grab-bag of zaniness and manic playfulness in imitation of the freewheeling French New Wave films that were all the rage with cinema buffs at the time. The theme is the moving-away-from-home and sexual coming-of-age of Bernard Chanticleer (Peter Kastner), a boyish, going-on-twenty Long Islander with a hyper-neurotic mom (supporting-actress Oscar nominee Geraldine Page) and a pompous pop (Rip Torn), who as Curator of Incunabula at the New York Public Library is also his boss. Bernard is so smitten with Barbara Darling (Elizabeth Hartman), a man-eating, go-go-dancing sylph who¹s part of an avant-garde theater company, that he almost literally can't see the sweet girl (Karen Black in her first role) who works alongside him, and painfully pines for him, at the library. Yet another female grotesque is Bernard's repressed landlady (Julie Harris), whose honest-to-God name, Miss Thing, may be the film's one enduring legacy to American culture. Coppola's talent is apparent even when he's trivializing it, and there are some nice ideas--e.g., a small army of library drones lyrically roller-skating through the stacks, and a meet-cute moment involving the library's pneumatic-tube system that may have inspired the New Wave's François Truffaut in turn (v.Stolen Kisses). (Not so sweet . . .) 『Set in a town outside Glasgow, this film tells a sometimes heart-stopping and finally heart-rending story of a 15-year-old boy's attempt to create an orderly life out of the chaotic one he's inherited. Committed to raising the 6000 pounds to buy a caravan for his mother, once she gets out of prison, he and a car-thieving friend ramp up their entrepreneurial efforts from flogging contraband cigarettes to punters at the local pub to something that pays more - drug dealing - all of which gets them involved with some thugs who have other plans for them. Ken Loach gives us his usual slice-of-life view of working-class struggles to just make a go of it, this time at a place where the best hope for a paying job is manning the phones at a call center.
Martin Compston as the young Liam is wonderful, and so is his red-headed colleague and partner in crime, Pinball, played by William Ruane. Together they represent a generation abandoned by parents and left to drift in a world without sanctuary. While the arc of the story is from youthful aspirations to crushing disillusionment, Loach says in his director's commentary that we are meant to see the ending as hopeful. Liam and his sister, who looks after him and her own young son, have the kind of resilience and determination, Loach says, to keep to a road that will lead them eventually to independence from their unpromising beginnings. It's a stretch, but you cling to that hope because you've come to care so much about these very real characters.
The performances in the film are captivating, and the kinetic camera work and editing are appropriate for the range of feelings aroused in its young protagonists, from playfulness to terror, rage, and sorrow. The soundtrack is subdued, and the language is #@%&! Oh, and by the way, turn on the subtitles. It's Glaswegian. You won't understand a word.』
(Sweet Sixteen) 『British director Loach is a master at evoking the hardship of poverty in working-class England, and this hard-hitting drama about a Scottish teen's coming of age is no exception. Loach has an impeccable eye for talented nonactors, too, and Greenock native Compston fits the bill perfectly, portraying a witty and resourceful young drug-runner-in-the-making with convincing confidence. Ruane, as his gawky sidekick, is equally wonderful. Bleakly realistic, yet peppered with humor and a splash of hope, "Sweet Sixteen" is a sympathetic portrait of troubled adolescence.』
(A House Doesn't Make A Home) 『In Ken Loach's stark but richly rewarding "Sweet Sixteen", we follow events leading up to the sixteenth birthday of the resilient but reckless Liam as he tries to prepare a life and a home in anticipation of his incarcerated but soon-to-be-released mother's return.
Liam is portrayed by the perfectly cast Martin Compston, whose emotive face can seem so youthfully vibrant yet at the same time so weathered and world-weary. And apt visage aside, this first-time actor here proves himself to be one of the great young performers emerging in the cinematic world of late - his pitch-perfect portrayal of Liam is right up there with recent starmaking roles turned in by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.
Liam is joined in this film by his best friend and literal partner-in-crime Pinball (who's certainly no wizard, although is perhaps so named because of the way he careeningly drives the "borrowed" vehicles in which he joyrides). Pinball is ably portrayed by William Ruane, another previously unknown local who is also quite a find. Together the two boys try to find ways to survive and thrive amidst an environment in which the odds are greatly stacked against them.
The film is actually shot in Greenock, just down the Clyde river from Glasgow, a town where almost all the jobs have moved elsewhere, leading to few "legitimate" ways to earn money. A place where once-lovely but now dilapidated tower blocks are inhabited in equal measure by junkies and families. As Loach himself states in the appropriately spare commentary track (where long silences abound), it's a location where the visually spectacular scenery "contrasts rather sadly with the quality of life of many of the people who live there."
In "Sweet Sixteen", we find the legendary director's usually strident political overtones to be toned down a tad, his muted message blending in nicely with the drab browns, greys and greens of the bleak and beautiful Glaswegian cityscape. The film shows us, subtly yet firmly, how the most promising and gifted attributes in souls young and old alike can sometimes be squelched and squandered by systemic and structural societal inequities. And though it can be depressing to take in at times, this film is ultimately breathtaking to behold, and the most remarkable thing about Compston's performance is that he portrays Liam so winningly that you actually root for him to be successful in even the most questionable of deeds. All of which makes for a highly recommended viewing experience.』
(Reality check for society) 『Think about this movie and how it applies to real life situations? An abusive family, mother in jail, the kids being in foster homes. All "Liam" wanted was a fresh start for his family once his mother got out of jail without her abusive boyfriend "stan". He had to do law breaking things to get the money to provide his mother with a place to live and as you can tell once she gets out she doesn't appreciate it. This movie is a wake up call to a lot of people out there that think these types of situations only happen in movies. At the end of the movie we see what lengths he goes to to try his best to get his mother back. I did not mind that there were few complete music pieces, have seen them elsewhere. Two things fascinated me about this one: the commentaries from his daughters, sister, brothers, and sidemen, though some comments offered as fact conflicted with those heard/read elsewhere, so I don't know what's really true. The second thing, and why I am buying this DVD after watching it three times, is the closeups of BG's fingering, much closer than in other videos. I am learning the clarinet, and my teacher keeps trying to keep my fingers as close to the instrument as possible and has mentioned that in certain cases a particular hand does not have to leave the instrument at all. Actually seeing that approach in motion hammered that home. It seemed that very few of Benny's fingers left the clarinet at times, even in up-tempo numbers. Seeing the undisputed master doing it is a great inspiration. And, yes, I know about his personality, warts and all, but as Jess Stacy says in the video, when you hear him, all is forgiven.』

I've been sick with a horrible cold and sore throat and was rummaging through my drawer of tea bags late last night and found a Tazo sampler I'd had for years. I tried this flavor, Wild Sweet Orange, and fell instantly head-over-heels in love. It totally lives up to the colorful, yummy words on the little packet.
This is what's written on the packet: "Imagine the invigorating bite of a sweet orange in a market in Marrakesh and you get some sense of the taste of Tazo Wild Sweet Orange tea." I must say it tastes even better than described. I was really pissed off that I only had one bag, so I looked it up online and ordered four boxes so I won't have to worry about running out again.
The ingredients listed are: lemongrass, blackberry leaves, citric acid, rose hips, spearmint leaves, orange peel, safflowers, hibiscus flowers, rose petals, natural orange essence, ginger root and licorice root."
It's also caffeine-free. I highly recommend this tea. I'm even going to try it cold when I get my "stash" in the mail.』

(Fantastic First Puzzle!) 『When I decided to introduce my kids to puzzles at around 16 months, I wanted something simple, safe, and educational. This fit the bill, and has been a wonderful toy that my kids seem to enjoy more and more. The pieces are hefty and durable, and the knobs are easy for my kids to handle. (great concept, but colors don't match, etc.) 『I just purchased this puzzle for my 16 month old daughter who enjoys it. However, the colors of the plug and the hole are supposed to match and they don't. Some are just very different shades and two are different colors altogether (purple versus blue/ orange versus red). Since color recognition is a fundamental aspect of this puzzle, this seems to be a significant flaw.
I also found as another reviewer did that the pieces don't seem to have been removed and cleaned after the jig cut them out. There is particle board dust that seems to keep wearing off with continued use even after it is cleaned with a damp cloth. This can be considered a small trade off for the price of the toy since it is so functional and educational.
However, the only concern I have with the dust is whether there are any chemicals from glue or other materials that might have some degree of toxicity. The pieces are in no way deteriorating of crumbling apart; there is just dust that my daughter found fascinating and began licking off her fingers.
The pegs to hold the pieces are perfect. The pieces fit well, not too loose, not too tight. (Fun, Simple, Very "Kawaii") 『First of all, all the craft ideas are very cute indeed. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked up the ISBN and found this book had an English translation.
I give this four out of five because of two things. One being that the instructions are slightly vague using mostly illustration (no step by step photos) and very little wording (my fist fortune cookie came out very, very flat). Nothing that a determined crafter couldn't over come.
Second, there are a lot of very Japanese and a few Chinese confections that the average American would have no idea as to what they are, so to me personally, they are less cute than the easily recognizable sweets like cake and donuts but that is personal preference.
I bought regular synthetic ( A.K.A cheap) felt and the first projects I made (fortune cookie aside) look good and I had no trouble with the felt being too weak. Some of the felt colors are hard to find, like mint green, but other than that the supplies are fairly cheap and easy to find at the usual craft stores.
If you want to make something super cute and can hand sew a bit this is a good book and the techniques are much faster to learn than other revenues of cuteness, like crocheting amigurumi etc., and with some supervision a craft that kids can enjoy and play with the end product. I'm glad I bought it!』

If you are a crafter, I am sure you have seen the adorable Japanese craft books on crafting blogs and sites on the Internet. People like you and I question if we can create a project from instructions written in Japanese. Some have been able to use these wondrous books and complete the projects. I did an article about a kit out of Japan and I had many questions and interest in the kits. Sadly the sources of these kits dried up and were not available outside of Japan. The article is¡°Felt Deserts¡± and the Japanese site is Patisserie Soleil.
I am sorry to make this intro for a book review so wordy, but I want you to get as excited as I am over this book¡°My Favorite Felt Sweets by Joie Staff¡± and translated into English by Yoko Ishiguro. This fabulous book cost less than one of the kits I mentioned above. Yoko has done a marvelous job translating this perfectly delightful book. The ideas and the sweets are perfection confections for you tocreate for gifts and yourself. The pictures are works of art and each project has a life size template and instruction sheet. You will not have any problem understanding these patterns. Each charming designs is a feast to the eye and although your mouth will water, please to not eat these littledelectable¡¯s. There are 106 different projects. Sheets of colored felt and basic sewing skills (and sometimes a little glue for the final, decorative touches) are all that are required to whip up these luscious-looking and guilt-free I have a friend who owns a bakery that makes delightful deserts like the ones in this book and I think that these sweets would create a charming display for her shop. I have scanned some of the delights in this book the temp you and I hope you do rush over to Amazon or the book shop of your choosing and pick up this book and then let us know what you think and please leave a review here.

I've only just started attempting to make playfood for my daughter, of course one can only have so many felt fried eggs and pancakes so when I saw this book I had to buy it.
The book itself is stunning, the photos will have you drooling and every turn of a page leaves my daughter yelling "mommy make me that one, oh and that one, can you make me that one too?"
Every pattern has a very detailed photo, a written instruction and FULL SIZE PATTERNS (photocopier needed, they are part of the book). There are also hints on which type of felt to use, how to sew the stitches (all are handsewn), etc.
For a beginning sewer all the detail is greatly appreciated. I've only attempted one little cake so far (awaiting a delivery of some wool blend felt, see below) and while I have a learning curve as I've never done hand sewing before it still came out pretty cute, the stawberry&whipped cream were especially easy and adorable.
Regarding the felt, while you can use the craft store variety be warned that it doesn't sew very well, or last very well. For the amount of effort these little pieces of art will require you'll want to invest in a wool blend or solid wool felt, which can be quite pricey... and some of the cakes use a great deal of wool so be awake that while adorable the creations will also be time consuming pending your level of experience and a bit pricey to make. TCMC is not a complete autobiography, and it omits many aspects of Wooden's life. It is certainly not a "tell-all" account, nor is it perhaps the best book on articulating Wooden's coaching philosophy. For that I would recommend another of Wooden's books, appropriately titled Wooden. There are also others out there.
