customer 's review (Great at times, lackluster at others - WORTH GETTING)
(2 Stars for effort)
(Scary)
(Po' 'Retha.....)
(Sometimes things dont get better wit age...) Aretha's latest effort finds her voice in an odd place:
She is in great control of her voice but, at times, (most noticeably on "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "This Christmas") it shows gaps in its range and she sounds shrill.
On other tracks such as "Ave Maria", "Angel" and "One night with king" it is hard to imagine that she is 66 because her voice is so at home while soaring, riffing, or just running smoothly through the paces - she is STILL FLY, still amazing, and still on top of her game. The in-store promotional sampler focuses on what I consider to be the weakest tracks from the album, but oddly, leaves out the already classic rendition of Ave Maria, which in my opinion makes the whole effort well worth my money.
I say cop the CD and you'll find yourself tearing up at "Ave Maria" and "One night with the king", laughing with "Twas the Night Before Christmas", and dancing as u decorate your Tree with "Christmas and Christmas" and "The Lord WIll Make a Way" and SKIPPING "THis Christmas" and "Angels We Have Heard on High". "The Queen" pulled up from the table to record. For that and only that reason, I give "The Queen" two stars. So far, I have only heard a few sound bites of her first Christmas project. What I've heard is not stellar. Time, decades of smoking and too much soul food consumption has taxed her vocal ability. This Christmas project is not her first. While with Columbia and Atlantc Records, "The Queen" recorded Christmas material that has been either shelved or reissued on compilations. I suggest diehard Aretha fans seek out her old Christmas stuff. Her old Christmas sides were done prior to her many years of smoking, dranking and EATING.
Her voice has left her and I dont think its coming back. She hasnt sounded like she does on her hit recordings in years, but this is just sad. Screaming, wailing, all on here and not in tune with the music. I heard this in a record store and I was shocked it was released. Dont waste your money. I have been (and always will be) a diehard 'Retha Fan. She has made classic recordings from day one that have undoubtedly stood the test of time. I have followed her since her Columbia days all the way up to now when she appears to become truly bitter and twisted at the mere SUGGESTION that someone other than she deserves the accolade "Queen of Soul." (get over it, 'Retha...it's time for you to go sit down somewhere and be very quiet..)
Notwithstanding, I have to agree with a previous reviewer - this is REAL beat up. I was not well for this at ALL!. Forget the magnificent runs, 'Retha and just sing the song, okay? She's all over the place and melody seems to be an alien concept to her. Indeed, some things do NOT get better with age. Or more pointedly, the fact that you are indeed a musical legend who has made an indelible impact on American music is still no excuse to release a clearly inferior product and expect even your diehard fans to simply accept it. Of course, no one ALWAYS hits the mark but quite frankly, love, you have been submitting similarly spotty work far too frequently lately. (sigh...it is indeed difficult to have to tell a loved one to clean it up!..)
This is (hopefully) just a mere stumbling block and she will release a much more decent project next year {belch}.
('Retha, I'm real mad at this because I KNOW you can do better....much, much, better.)
If you are a diehard Retha fan, you may want to get this but for the life of me I cannot bring myself to purchase it......yet Being of an age where people like aretha, ray charles and stevie wonders are legends in not only music but in the history of their eras, I am saddend when they attempt to hold onto that for too long or get talked into making "comeback tours" (ie van halen). My first encounter of this cd was at a bookstore shamelessly promoting it, and all I can say was OH MY. One reviewer called it a Prince impersonation but that doesnt do it justice. We are talking about an hours worth of verbal assault. Something that wouldnt have made 3 seconds in front of the American Idol Judges before being booted off. It was as if the beltone hearing aid was mistuned. I dont believe there was a single note that was on key and most of the songs were so bad you could not even discern the words. Please. Please heed this warning. You would rather listen to the musical stylings of Mister Conway Twitty than this. You have been warned. Aretha's first ever Christmas album!Aretha Franklin's multitude of loyal listeners will be thrilled that the wait for such a momentous project is over and has been truly worthwhile. Released through DMI Music, "This Christmas Aretha," shimmers and sparkles as the acclaimed artist puts her definitive stamp on a mix of 11 traditional and contemporary classics associated with the holiday season. Aretha Franklin herself produced three tracks and arranged and added her inimitable touch as a pianist to two tracks ("Silent Night" and "14 Angels"). Award-winning producer Tena Clark (whose production credits include Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick, Chaka Khan and a multitude of other major artists) masterminded seven cuts. Track listing: 1. Angels We Have Heard On High 2. This Christmas 3. My Grown Up Christmas List 4. The Lord Will Make A Way 5. Silent Night 6. Ave Maria 7. Christmas Ain't Christmas (Without The One You Love) 8. 14 Angels 9. One Night With The King 10. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing 11. 'Twas The Night Before Christmas Rerations < This Christmas, Aretha >

(cheated by HIT Ent. again)
(Release date is wrong) The problem I have with this video is the fact that in a segment, Percy calls a danger warning board 'stupid'. Here is the transcript from the video that I'm referring to:
Thomas: 'DANGER' means falling down something. I went past 'DANGER' once, and fell down a mine. Percy: I can't see a mine. Narrator: He didn't know that the foundations to the Quay had sunk, and that the rails now sloped downward to the sea. Percy: Stupid board!
So call me old fashioned if you want and I don't consider my a prude, but I personally don't think I should be worried that a video made for small children may teach them words like 'stupid'. When I overheard this in the video, I though I misunderstood, so I rewound it to make sure I heard it right and sure enough when my son heard it the second time, he proceeded to mimic the phrase over and over, even at the grocery store. I finally got him to stop, but I was furious about it. I won't let him watch it again and will try to get a refund from the Thomas parent company since the store I bought it at won't give refunds on opened videos. I suggest a DON'T BUY on this one. They just repackaged some old episodes, the colors are not bright and definitely not HD. The kids don't mind at all, but I always feel cheated, 99% of newly released Thomas DVDs are just old episodes. Stories: -Daisy -Percy's Predicament -Whistles and Sneezes -Saved From Scrape -A New Friend for Thomas -Tender Engines -Percy Takes the Plunge And a sing-along "Let's Have a Race"
Do not get fooled by the release date on this DVD. Don't get me wrong. The stories are as good as always. But the actual production are probably in the late 80s or early 90's. But after watching those more recent Thomas release DVD you'll not be interest in watching those old productions. (Beautiful)
(A few bright spots, but also some disappointments)
(This CD Deserves SIX Stars!)
(every good adjective) This CD is one of my favorites to listen to when I feel the need to be closer to the Spirit. Mack Wilberg is a master at transforming old hymns into glorious arrangements. I have had experience with high school students who love singing his arrangements even within the context of a world that seems in a state of constant conflict. THIS CD IS FABULOUS! This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection. It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends" and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.
However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!! This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one. Rerations < Peace Like a River >

customer 's review (Clever punchy British black comedy)
(An oh-so-black comedy)
(Strangers on a Bridge)
(Some great moments, but ultimately lacking cohesion)
(Perfect!!!) Taking a cue from American ex-pat Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train, playwright Alan Ayckbourn penned the plays on which Sweet Revenge was based, in whith two strangers each agree to bump off the person causing him/her the most misery in their respective lives.
Of course Ayckbourn can't duplicate what Highsmith had already brilliantly done, so he starts things off with both parties being suicidal (definitely NOT part of the Highsmith story), then moves in very different directions from Highsmith indeed.
Malcolm Mowbray, the talented director of this movie, (he also directed another punchy black comedy, but set in the States, Out Cold--with Teri Garr, John Lithgow and Randy Quaid--highly recommended), has done a great job deftly blending wry British humor with black comedy (very black, indeed) as well as romantic highjinks and some outright guffaws.
When you see sparrows blithely flying around a living room, part of a huge mansion in which the younger son rides his motor scooter on a regular basis and the older sister (one of the two parties involved in the revenge pact) changes her appearance in the blink of an artistocratic eye, you can tell there's a lot of fun to be had.
And there is. Highsmith's story has no comedy whatsoever, but Ayckbourn is a master of this mesh of comedy and biting stuff, and that comes across beautifully in this film version. The acting by the three leads (Sam Neill, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Helena Bonham Carter) is great, with the definite nod for scene stealer going to Ms. Carter, who seems capable of doing basically anything in front of a camera (see Fight Club and Twelfth Night for radically different and consistently excellent performances).
A very nice piece of work. Recommended! I purchased this because of the rave reviews on Amazon and because I loved Aykbourn's brilliant The Norman Conquests. But this film, while it has its moments, is a studiously black comedy that doesn't come off. It works too hard at being completely off the wall, and ultimately disappoints. It's just mayhem, designed to draw laughs. Well, it does, but only occasionally. (Imagine playing Count Basie at the expiration of a villain. That's Mel Brooks country.) Yes, Helena Bonham Carter is an excellent actress. But it's all so contrived, complete with a wink at the camera at the end. Save your money. As the story begins, Henry (Sam Neill) has lost his job to an unscrupulous co-worker, and has decided to end it all by jumping off Tower Bridge. There he meets eccentric Karen (Helena Bonham Carter) who has just bungled her own suicide attempt (her lover went back to his wife). They start talking about how much they wish their enemies were dead and Karen gleefully suggests they each do the job for the other. Henry assumes she's kidding, of course, but the next morning he finds Karen has gone ahead with the plan.
If you think this plot sounds a lot like Hitchcock's thriller, "Strangers on a Train," you're right. The difference is this one's played for big laughs with dark humor that I really enjoyed. Neill is very good as the innocent man who gets caught up in the wacky plot hatched by Bonham Carter's character. She steals the show with her outrageous cheekiness. Kristin Scott Thomas is the lover's haughty wife, and no one plays the disdainful aristocrat better than she does. Comic actor Steve Coogan is hysterical as Henry's nemesis. If you like British comedies, you'll love "Sweet Revenge;" it's fast, funny, and loaded with droll upper-class humor. Excellent!
Kona I generally enjoy British comedies and prefer a good, thoughtful snicker over slapstick fun. When I watched this, I wanted to like it. And when I read the reviews after watching it, I'm really trying to like it. But I can't entirely agree with the other reviews...not because they're wrong, just my taste differs.
I feel like the movie had so many great elements (including as others have said some excellent acting) and could have been truly hilarious, but it just went a little off kilter somewhere and couldn't quite stay on track. Just as you warmed up to one element, something else would spoil the moment.
My initial reaction was "what a crazy movie!" Karen appears to be a complete maniac and Henry is extremely slow to catch on in some ways (i.e., he realizes Karen is quite dangerous from the start but doesn't seem to have any other way of dealing with her than really unitelligent honesty). The brother Oliver is great and there are a lot of small scenes that the film does quite well (when the kippers cause an embarassing stain, the way the young maid Norma is treated, etc).
But I disagree that Imogen was affected and arrogant. She responded to the view of Karen (her husband's former mistress) with the cold fury of someone attempting to maintain composure in the face of great strain. If a spouse brought me to an outing with their former "lover", I'd be pretty mad too. Her first comment to Henry is indicative of her frustration and she says it without thinking.
But how would anyone like Karen or Imogen find Anthony appealing? I found it farfetched how quickly Imogen fell for Henry and vice versa, upon their second meeting he tries to kiss her. And it seems unlikely that someone who suffered from frequent asthma would not carry their ventilator in their pocket (but maybe I am uninformed on this score).
Towards the end, it began lacking a feeling of cohesion and felt more like random funny moments appended to each other. The ending didn't feel like you arrived at a destination, more like it just stopped somewhere when we ran out of time and patched on a quick finish. Anyway, some people liked this so it's definitely got a following, just didn't appeal to me. Maybe it will grow on me in time. I loved every second of this film. I can't imagine how anyone could not like it. It's funny, full of talented actors esp Sam Neill. Thoroughly entertaining!! A great buy. As Henry Bell (Sam Neill fromJurassic ParkandThe Piano) is preparing to throw himself off the Tower Bridge in London, he hears cries of help, which lead him to Karen Knightly (Helena Bonham Carter,Fight Club,Howard's End), who has just thrown herself off of the bridge and gotten her belt caught on a protuberance. In short time they're telling each other what led them to take this drastic step, how they'd each like to kill a certain person who has made each of their lives miserable. Karen hatches a plan: They'll each take on the other's act of revenge. Henry's not so sure about this, but when he wakes up the following morning Karen's plans are already underway. She's fiercely determined that he keep up his end of the bargain and ruin the life of Imogen (Kristin Scott Thomas,The English Patient,Four Weddings and a Funeral). Unfortunately, Henry falls in love with Imogen instead, leaving Karen with no choice but to enact revenge on Henry as well. Adapted from a play by Alan Ayckbourn,Sweet Revengeis blessed with sweet and funny performances by the three leads (who seem delighted by the opportunity to be frivolous), as well as capable work from a supporting cast of British character actors.--Bret Fetzer Rerations < Sweet Revenge >

customer 's review (Skin-deep beauty)
(Period Piece Based od Historical Fact)
(Give Alexander Dumas Some Credit!)
(Hillary Swank is awesome in this movie)
(L'affaire du collier) The setting is the court of France during the reign of Louis XVI, where Marie Antoinette has just refused to accept a massive diamond necklace (which was originally intended for a rival). Jeanne de Valois, who has reason to hate the royals, designs a scheme involving the 2800-carot necklace: Using the ambitious and unsuspecting Cardinal de Rohan as a pawn, Jeanne comes to possess the jewels, but the plan backfires with disastrous results.
The movie is based on a true story, but the facts are twisted and the plot so complicated that I had a hard time understanding it or even caring. Jeanne should have been the villain of the case, but instead she's made to be a pathetic victim and brave heroine, and it doesn't make sense. The narration tells us that the affair of the necklace was a huge contributing factor in Marie Antoinette's downfall, but there's nothing in the plot to show this.
The casting of Hillary Swank as Jeanne and Adrien Brody as her husband was a big mistake; they're both too contemporary and ungainly to play in this delicate period piece and they look out of place. No expense was spared for the opulent Oscar-nominated costumes and the magnificent sets, but the movie is a major clunker thanks to its confusing script. This movie was well acted by a cast of well-known actors, wonderful costuming&cinematography and a must see if you love period pieces based on historical fact.
The only major draw back to this movie for me was how slow the storyline seemed to movie and its predictability.... If the movie wasn't so slow or predictable then I would have given it a much higher rating than 3 stars! "L'Affaire du Collier" may be based upon a true story, but it is also an enthralling historical romance, "The Queen's Necklace," by Alexandre Dumas, who certainly had more than the "Three Musketeers" up his sleeve. Dumas relates the identical story of Joseph Balsamo, aka Count Cagliostro, Jeanne de la Motte Valois, the lecherous but charming Cardinal de Rohan and the great diamond scam, although the movie makers give Dumas no credit whatsoever (I note that the book is available on Amazon.com, and I highly recommend it!).
The costume designer, Malena Canonero, deserves plaudits for the swathes of silks, satins, and lace jabots that recreate the opulence of the 18th-century court of Louis XVI magnificently. The settings are also splendid. I found much of the music jarring, however, in that the composer insisted on giving it a modern beat at times, and also used a mish-mash of Mozart's "Requiem," among other things. I find such cuts and rearrangement of a bar here; a bar there, to be both lazy and a bit of a cheat. In the featurette, the director explained that he wanted to make the period "accessible" to modern audiences. Such "accessibility" not only insults the intelligence of the modern audience but also weakens the movie.
Because the story is so strong, I nevertheless enjoyed the film. I was particularly impressed with the performances of Jonathan Pryce as the suave Cardinal, Adrien Brody as Jeanne's feckless husband, and Simon Baker, who is especially engaging as her love interest. All of them are believable and move well in their silks. Although Hilary Swank is an excellent actress, I thought she was miscast in this role. She looks a trifle uncomfortable in her costume and moves more like a woman of the twenty-first century rather than one of the eighteenth.
These reservations aside, I shall keep this film and doubtless watch it again. This film is based on true events that led directly to the downfall of Marie Antoinette, the much maligned Queen of France. Hillary Swank does an amazing job in the role of the daughter of the aristocratic, but unjustly persecuted Valois family. This film recounts her scheme to clear her familiy's name and reclaim her rightful position in French society. Natasha Richardson is superb in the few scenes she has as the doomed Marie Antoinette. Adrien Brody gives a fine performance as well. I really enjoyed this film. It is a bittersweet tale and an excellent period piece. If you like Hilary Swank, you will LOVE this movie. I think this movie gets me because it is based on a true story, not entirely true, but the necklace scandal, in my opinion did contribute to the french revolution, Hilary is wonderful, I think. The whole movie is wonderful, and sad because you know what happens to the people involved, I would recommend owning this DVD, if you enjoy, historical, or period pieces.
For all its earnest intrigue, historically accurate references, and elaborate set design,The Affair of the Necklaceis best enjoyed as a comedy of Hollywood errors. The court of late-18th-century France is ruled by Marie Antoinette (Joely Richardson), whose confidence and favor is yearned for by Jeanne de la Motte-Valois (Hilary Swank), a young woman stripped of her title and orphaned at a young age. As flashbacks repeatedly remind the audience, Jeanne is essentially pure at heart even as she takes up with a court gigolo (Simon Baker) and enacts the intricate scheme from which the title is drawn. Soon embroiled in Jeanne's plan to win back her rightful place in the world are her avaricious husband of convenience, Nicolas (Adrien Brody); the soon-to-be-disposed-of Marie Antoinette; the salacious Cardinal Rohan (Jonathan Pryce); a necklace of questionable taste; and a host of other players. All the makings for a hilarious romp (à laRidicule) are in place, but director Charles Shyer, with his lavish budget in tow, wants the film to be taken seriously. Only Christopher Walken, in a hilarious turn as the fraudulent soothsayer Count Cagliostro, sees through the facile script and relishes his part in what will no doubt prove a colossal flop.--Fionn Meade Rerations < Affair of Necklace >
