To put it mildly, Tilson-Thomas' Ives Fourth Symphony is a MAJOR accomplishment in the way in which it documents this maddeningly complex and unfathomable work---and after 37 years of familiarity with it (I sat through every rehearsal and performance by Michael Charry and the Cleveland Orchestra in October, 1971), I have never recognized the truly profound quality of this music until hearing the CSO/Tilson-Thomas recording.
MTT absolutely grasps the structure, phrasing and pacing of the Ives Fourth. The effect of the distant violin/harp "star" music in the opening is beautifully realized, as is is amost every other detail of the movement. The outlandish second movement is captured in all of its phantasmagoric glory; MTT follows Ives' rather quick tempos throughout, and once again lays out the structure and detail of the music with total logic and clarity---not to mention amazingly VIVID character!
But it is in the FINALE that Tilson-Thomas acheives something quite extraordinary. Most conductors (including Ozawa in his brisk and uninvolving reading) don't seem to have a CLUE as to the true mystical, solemn and otherwordly nature of this movement. I was encouraged upon discovering that MTT's finale timing is 10:30 (as compared to Ozawa's 8:00 and Dohnanyi's 8:38), but I could not have been prepared for the overwhelming effect of the movement in its emotional effect. Who could possibly imagine that the raucous, radical, iconoclastic music of Charles Ives might actually hover in the same rarified sphere as the great spiritual works of Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart? Preposterous, you say? Don't speak too soon......
And as the magical layers of sound (starting at 7:28)---ethereal strings, gently tolling bells, gently intoned hymns--- gradually coalesce into a glorious chorale-like cadence (at 8:09 ~ FINALLY a conductor who understands and appreciates this sublime moment), the chorus enters... again, PERFECTLY emerging from the texture, and ultimately floating into some vast, radiant expanse...with the eternal percussion procession, the distant "star" music and the final choral echos drifting into infinity.
Yes, I realize my attempts to describe this music sound cliched....but you simply will not BELIEVE the total effect of this great, visionary work in the hands of a conductor who really understands it.
Minor gripes: the secondary (orchestral) piano is a bit too distant most of the time, and the abundance of high, divisi writing for the violins, which should create a transparent, etheral effect, is simply too bright and obtrusive throughout(the CSO strings during this period were always in danger of being overpowered by the great brass section, which delivers the chorales here with a power and grandeur unlike any other recording I have heard).
I admire the Ozawa recording, since the recording, especially in the second movement--it is as CLEAN, detailed, and brilliantly balanced as could possibly be imagined. In THAT respect, Ozawa really excelled. But the sense of awe, mystery and the otherworldly which Ives, despite his inherently clumsy and rather "raw" compositional technique, still managed to achieve in this music is almost entirely absent from Ozawa's--and every other performance I have heard--- compared with this one. If you have ANY interest in exploring the enigmatic genius of Charles Ives, get this CD. 』
(Detail of Ives's Evolution over Time) 『This CD consists of the Charles Ives's first and last symphonies. The first is a work that Ives wrote as his thesis while a music student at Yale. It demonstrates Ives's mastery of the late 19th century style. It's an interesting and thoroughly engaging work of music, but nothing spectacular. The real highlight of this disc is the 4th symphony, which is probably the best played version of this piece currently available. The fourth is Ives's most ambitious and experimental work. It experiments with atonality, polytonality, polyryhthms, and the layering of multiple orchestras (or at least the impression of layering multiple orchestras). Plus, in typical Ives fashion, the fourth includes numerous quotes to popular American music of his time, especially marches and ragtime. What sets this recording of the fourth apart from the numerous others that are available is its Americanness. The other available recordings are conducted by non-Americans who don't seem to have a real grasp of the uniquely American qualities of this piece. Other recordings tend to suffer from a very modernist approach. The playing is precise and the multiple textures are very clear...however, that's not the point of this piece. MTT makes this piece swing, which is exactly how it's supposed to be played. Listen to the quotes from ragtime and marches in other versions of this piece as compared to the ragtime and american marches in this recording. This recording sounds very American and captures the essence of turn of the century American music, wheras the other recordings play this swinging music as if it were an excercise in precision conducting. Yes, if you want to hear the music played with precise and clearly articulated textures, go for the Ozawa recording. If you want to hear the fourth as the revolutionary piece of music that celebrates America, as Ives meant to be heard, then pick up this recording.』
(Much Better Choices Available) 『Tilson Thomas--a wonderful conductor of much 20th-century music--just doesn't have the ear for Ives. This seems true for all of the composer's work, as varied as it was. The 1st Symphony, a student composition, in Tilson Thomas's hands seems exactly the proficient but minor piece it was long regarded as. Mehta's rendering on Decca is infinitely more compelling, revealing it as one of the first outstanding American symphonies. Likewise, Tilson Thomas's rendering of the still astonishingly radical 4th does not come close to Stokowski's premiere recording on Sony (I hardly know what to think of the reviewer who finds problems with that recording's audio quality--it's powerful and absolutely first-rate) or Ozawa's thrilling version on DG. That last is paired (along with Ozawa's definitive take on "Central Park in the Dark") with a Tilson Thomas "Three Places in New England"--once again, unconvincing.』
(Stunning Recording/Performance/Interpretation) 『I caught the Ives"bug"in 70's while in college. I heard the Houston Symphony and Lawrence Foster perform the 4th live in Jones Hall. While completely baffled by much of what I heard, I knew I had to learn more about this composer. I bought and listened to as many LP's as I could afford, among them was the Ormandy/Philadelphia 1st and Stokowski/American Symphony 4th on Columbia. I was fond of both the 1st and 4th, but set them both aside until recently. I listened to them both, found that I still enjoyed them very much, but found both lacking from a sound quality point of view. I searched the Web and found glowing reviews of this CD. Well, the reviews are 100% justified. This CD will quite possibly become my favorite in my collection.
Pairing the 1st and the 4th makes sense. George Ives told his son, "You have to learn the rules before you can break them". The 1st clearly shows that Ives learned the rules admirably. The work is both moving at times and tremendous fun. Take a young, creative, and relatively uninhibited musical genius, expose him to the great European masters like Brahms, Dvorak, Wagner, and Beethoven, mix in church hymns, American folk and band music, and you will get the Ives 1st Symphony.
Comparing the Ormandy to the Tilson Thomas, while I'm very fond of the Ormandy reading, I find the Tilson Thomas to be overall significantly more satisfying. The Ives 1st is a technically challenging work particularly for the 1st violins. Except for a few very minor flaws, the CSO strings meet the challenge. Tilson Thomas extracts more of the music from the score. The recording engineers get an A+ for overall balance and sound. This is a fine, very accessible work which deserves many more performances in the concert hall than what I suspect it currently gets.
Between the First and Fourth are performances of five hymns that are used in the Fourth - a nice bonus.
It's difficult for me to discuss the Ives Fourth. I have been a fan of the work since I first heard it. The third, slow movement is a reworking of the first movement of the First String Quartet. It's accessible, beautiful, and deeply moving. The other three movements are experimental music at its all time best -- powerful, baffling, mysterious, chaotic, and profoundly moving. This music arguably could have been an intellectual exercise only, but somehow completely transcends this, and becomes something which I can only, given my limitations as a music listener, view with great awe and mystery. For me this music is completely engaging, fascinating, transports me at times into an altered state of mind that I can't even begin to describe, and ultimately moves me to the strongest and most deeply felt of emotions.
I considered this work to be a masterpiece in a category all by itself. If there are other works like this one, I want to know about them, please.
I give this release the highest of all possible recommendations. The attention to detail and how successfully it has been captured on disk is simply amazing.』
(A Fine Ives CD!) 『If you are collecting Ives' symphonies, this is a sensitive, clean and appealing performance of No. 1. The inclusion of five old American church hymns on this CD is an interesting idea. While I doubt anyone will buy this CD for these hymns, I appreciate the concept of inserting them as a prelude to Ives' Sym. No. 4, since Ives does quote these particular hymns in the symphony. As for Sym. No. 4: I loved my old vinyl recording, but I love this CD even more! Conductors might interpret this extremely complex music in varying ways, but somehow No. 4 conveys its unmistakeable"message"in every recording I've heard. Ives' genius was truly unique. A native of Danbury CT, he was experimenting with polyrhythms, quarter-tones, and free atonalism long before Schoenberg and Stravinsky brought them into style. Has any other composer so daringly and so successfully raised such humble materials to such a sublime level? How can two marching bands playing different pieces at the same time be so right? How can chaos make such perfect sense? Somehow Ives makes disorder into something transcendently perfect, and yes...piercingly beautiful. The final movement might provoke a mystical vision if you're not careful. Michael Tilson Thomas truly loves modern music, and it shows in this recording. He brings out the Emersonian-mystical quality of Ives' music very effectively, but also utilizes the power of the C.S.O. to emphasize the surprising muscle beneath this music, which I had not noticed in other recordings. As you might expect with the C.S.O., the performance is precise (perhaps a strange term to use with this symphony) but also emotionally charged. The chorus does a beautiful job with its haunting, critical role in the 1st and last movements. I recommend this CD highly, and hope it will help more people appreciate Ives' genius.』 『Ives's First Symphony is an attractive, conservative piece with a gorgeous slow movement based on a hymn tune and a finale that sounds strangely like early Bruckner. The Fourth, on the other hand, is arguably his masterpiece, and one of the most radical compositions in the history of music. Scored for a huge orchestra with three solo pianos, chorus, offstage and onstage instruments, and "everything but the kitchen sink" percussion, it requires at least two conductors to keep it all coordinated. Listening to it--despite the commotion in the second movement--is a positively transcendental experience, and the finale resolves itself into one of the most beautiful moments in American music. These performances are smashing (and crashing, where necessary!).--David Hurwitz』

Few conductors can match the sense of hallowed greatness of this work that many feel is Verdi's greatest 'opera'. In this performance he captures all the drama, the terror of the final day of judgment, the antiphonal brass effects that come through well in this superb sonic display, and at the same time he is able to offer the most tender moments of the work with a hushed reverence that calls for a unified approach from all of his resources.
To say that the Berlin Philharmonic plays well for him is too obvious; that the chorus rises to the broad spectrum of dynamics with complete commitment is likewise not surprising. What is a revelation here is the manner in which Giulini worked with each of the soloists to mold his uncanny interpretation. Sharon Sweet has the power for the declamatory passages as well as the gentle pianissimos of her exposed solos. Florence Quivar's voice seems to have no breaks at all between the high and low ranges of her demanding role; her voice is pure gold. Vinson Cole may seem an odd choice for a Verdi work, but here he makes the tenor solos and participation in the quartet clarion clear with a voice that never feels strained or less than beautiful. Simon Estes is a true bass who is able to utter the haunting 'Mors stupebit' in a manner that makes all other basses seem superficial in their delivery.
The recorded sound is rich and immediate; perhaps choosing to record the work in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin adds to the sonic splendor that makes the Requiem seem even more credible a work. This is a recording that deserves all prizes it has won and should be part of the library of every music lover. It is definitive! Grady Harp, November 09』
(A Meaningful Verdi Requiem) 『Carlo Maria Giulini was a gentle and spiritual man by reputation. This recording of the Verdi Requiem wih the Berlin Phil from 1989 represents Giulini's devotion to what some call Verdi's best opera, "The Verdi Requiem." In addition to his passionate conducting Giulini has the Berlin Philharmonic, an orchestra that played well for him on several occasions, a first rate chorus and Sharon Sweet, Florence Quivar, Vinson Cole and Simon Estes as solists. Verdi challenges his performers in this work. Especially the soloists, most of all the soprano soloist. The soloists really do a wonderful job here. My most questionable choice on this recording was that of Vinson Cole as the tenor soloist. Having heard him in an art song recital and being very moved, I thought he would be too light for a Verdi's Requiem. I usually think of Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Carlo Bergonzi, Placido Domingo or Jussi Bjoerling as ideal for the tenor solo in this work. Vinson Cole has a lighter timbre then those singers, but you forget that when you listen to his musicality. He brings a beautiful cupo color to his singing several time in this performance. In the "Ingemisco" he handles both high b flats with ease. Simon Estes does a fine job as the bass soloist, including a beautiful pianissimo on the word "benedictis" in the bass solo "Confutatis." Florence Quivar sings very beautifully in the "Liber Scriptus" that Verdi sets so skillfully. The soloist who is challenged the most in this work is the soprano. The "Libera me" puts the ball in the sopranos court because it is her, chorus and orchestra. Sharon Sweet, a dramatic soprano does more than live up to the challenge. She sings beautifully and sells this section at the same time. Giulini's coachings with the soloists really paid off because of his sense of colors and word stress. He asks the soloists to sing soft in sections that are often sung forte to great effect. I was very moved by every aspect of this recording. I bought it expecting to love Giulini and the orchestra and have mixed feelings about the soloists and chorus. Luckily the performance proved me wrong.』
(Simply Sublime!) 『This performance of Verdi's Requiem is simply sublime. Giulini gets just right balance between dramatic expression and religious reverence. Singers are all superb and free from operatic exaggeration which mars so many other recordings. Berlin P and the choir creates truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. Most beautifully recorded with wonderful acoustics in Jesus-Christus Kirche.

(Magnificent) 『Why are there four different recordings of Verdi's Missa da Requiem by Carlo Maria Giulini currently listed through Amazon.com? (I counted them. Four!) They are not there because the work is, as we know, well loved. Rather, there has never been a Verdi master in my time so skilled at presenting the Missa at once as the beautiful, powerful, and spiritual communication it is. Giulini dominated many interpretations of Verdi's music during the last half of the 20th century as few could. He was respected for his artistry, the balance between feeling and power in presenting Verdi's music, and because he knew the difference between speed and musical velocity.
Enough praise for the Great One! However, personally I miss him so much. The beauty he brought from everything he touched was a constant sunrise, and he never called attention to himself. He was a baton poet.
This Requiem from Berlin is different from all the others I have heard by Giulini (I have three of his.). It is more beautiful, the sound is better, the soloists (duets, quartets too) sing rapturously, the choir is very good, and the orchestra is so very great. With such masterful direction and this great orchestra's playing, it makes me sorry to say "Ich bin nicht ein Berliner!" I have loved the way the BPO played for Giulini in Mahler's Das Lied, Beethoven's 9th, and now the Verdi Missa da Requiem.
This performance is the recorded swan song for the Missa da Requiem of one of the most luminous Verdi masters to ever touch the ground. Listen to it and you will soar. Get it as fast as you can.
Personally I am always torn between Brahm's German Requiem and Verdi's Missa for my favorite piece of music. Although I love many great compositions, right now my favorite between the two mentioned is Giulini's great performance of Verdi's Missa da Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ernst Senff Choir and many great soloists. It is very rich and, and at my age of 68, I think I shall not hear too many performances more beautiful than this one. Ah, but after having heard it, I say to myself, "This one is enough."

(Not My Style) 『If you like Big Band or traditional classical music leave this one alone. Benny Goodman is brilliant in his playing, but the subject is completely undecipherable to my ears. To me, this music is only fit for mathematicians who like patterns rather than "music". Very unnerving.』
(Great Introduction to 20th Century Music) 『This CD is a great introduction to 20th Century Classical music. Though it features the artistry of Benny Goodman, don't expect to hear him wail like he did with Lionel Hampton and Gene Krupa playing "Four Once More". No, this CD reflects Goodman's talent as a classical musician. For even though some of these pieces are jazz-inspired, they are all written by classical composers in a classical format. It's a different side of Benny Goodman that is a testimony to the notion that the "King of Swing" could have had just as lucrative a carer as a clarinet virtuoso in the classical style and could have moved on to being a great American composer and/or conductor for symphony orchestras. Probably, there was a lot more money to made, and a better chance of becoming famous, in the world of jazz.
In any case this CD features four 20th century classical works for clarinet, and orchestra and one 20th century chamber work. Each piece also features the composer as conductor, except for the chamber work which features the Bela Bartok on piano. Indeed, it is an all-star summit meeting of some the greatest 20th composers, namely Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, Morton Gould, and Bela Bartok.
The Bernstein, Stravinsky and Gould pieces are the ones which are jazz-inspired, albeit they are really not jazz any more than the folk-inspired symphonic music of Dvorak is authentic Czech folk music as played by a band of Czech street musicians. As Dvorak did with folk music, Bernstein, Stravinsky and Gould take jazz rhythms and other characteristics of jazz and replicate that feeling within a classical framework.
Bernstein's "Fugue and Riffs", however, sustains a certain aura of jazz authenticy. For even though Bernstein was a classical composer and conductor, his occaisional crossovers into Broadway and his New Yorker status make for something of a modified reworking of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; you can feel in "Fugue and Riffs" the sights, sounds and smells of the busy New York City traffic. It's quite nice.
Stravinsky's "Ebony Concerto" is probably the most masterful piece in this whole collection. I am not a huge enthusiast of Stravinsky, but I admire this concerto as it weds beautifully the classical European concerto form with the jazz style. Even though Stravinsky is difficult and cerebral, you know that when you hear his music and witness his perfect craftsmanship, that you are in the presence of greatness.
The music by Morton Gould is the weakest of the jazz-inspired pieces here, as it sounds the most contrived; however, it is still good enough to have some fun with.
The Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra by Aaron Copland is an outstanding work that reflects Copland's tender and elegant side (not like his "rootin-tootin" "Rodeo" or "Billy the Kid" Suites). The Clarinet Concerto is rather a more quiet piece of work (Like parts of "Appalacian Spring"). The concerto is subtle and gentle in it's beauty and it is lightly tinged by just a hint of South American influence. It is another masterful work by an 20th Century master.
The final piece is Bartok's Trio for Violin, Piano and Clarinet. It features Goodman, Joseph Szigeti, and the composer on the piano. It has Bartok's characteristic Hungarian flavor cloaked in a mysterious and ultra-modern tapestry. It's also quite nice.
If you are a fan of classical music, but have yet to venture into the seemingly harsh world of twentieth century music, this makes for an excellent sampler. Benny Goodman plays in a full bright, expressive and masterful tone. If you are used to classical music of the more popular variety (Beethoven, Tchaikovsky etc.), this CD may be challenging at first; but given an even chance you may like it. I first bought these recordings on vynal years ago. It was one of my first introductions to 20th century or "Modern" classical music. I am glad to have upgraded to conveniant CD form.』
(A must have) 『BG will always be the master of all clarinetists in Big Band era, but if you enjoy Classical Music, although it's not a German-Stile precission play (Leister....) you will enjoy the emotion of hearing Copland's Concert by the man it was intended to sound....among other contemporary music.
You will enjoy it, if not, at least, you will find it very interesting if you are a clarinetist and you are looking for a piece of your instrument's music.』
(benny Goodman Collectors edition) 『An excellent CD to have for all the fans of this great legend. If the Copeland concerto doesn't move you, then nothing will.』

But I enjoyed this film because it illustrates how cross cultures can work together to create a beautiful production. Chinese opera itself is incredible, but in this film, a movie director is put in charge of the production. There is a big difference between stage lighting and film lighting. This film depicts resolving differences between crews. Not too much here about the singers, or the orchestra. Meta has a role, but it's basically about making this thing work. I especially enjoyed the army troops being used as extras.』
(Impossibly Fascinating!) 『It's difficult to do opera even poorly, and nearly impossible to do it well. The art form is staggeringly collaborative, and --- unlike cinema --- is utterly dependent on all factors combining in the right way at each unrepeatable, uneditable moment. So... take Puccini's swan song, TURANDOT, his grandest, if not his greatest, opera; now, present it in a city that has never produced western opera but that is the fictional/historical setting for its plot; make certain that your thousands of collaborators and artistic leadership do not speak the same language; and finally, add the less-than-creative tension of a totalitarian government determined that the entire enterprise should reflect well on both current leaders and the ancient culture. No wonder this film is so fascinating! Reviewers will understandably wish to see such a vast canvas painted from different perspectives than the ones chosen, but that serves to indicate how engaging this subject truly is. Alan Miller does an amazing job of capturing international overtones, aesthetic divergences, and personal obstacles and perseverance. Extraordinary commitment to detail and one particular coup-de-theatre: the creation of an exquisitely-danced character representing the court executioner. The focus (as is frequently the case with TURANDOT), is less on fineness of nuance than on the scale of achievement. You'll come away from viewing this documentary fully as inspired by the artists' commitment and flexibility as by the production itself. Unique! 』
(Turandot and China: A Win-Win Situation) 『Formidable talent on all sides; formidable difficulties in translating the entire production of this opera into a version acceptable in China. The nuances of lighting decisions were, for just one example, as fascinating to follow as anything in the plot of Turandot. A wonder-full thing to watch and listen to.』

Before the year was out, an extraordinary opportunity arose: to stageTurandotin its original setting in the Forbidden City of Beijing. The outdoor production was an undertaking on an epic scale--including the expansion of the site with the construction of huge new sets, the creation of breathtaking hand-sewn Ming Dynasty costumes and the adding of hundreds of soldiers and local extras, to lend a lavish authenticity to the staging. (The best baseball movie for the young viewers.) 『Not that long ago before today's little league baseball players dreamed of one day joining the majors because of the 10 to 20 million dollars they could make in a year (yes,a year!),there was this movie,The Bad News Bears in breaking training. What I enjoyed about this movie was that it was one of those classic baseball movies that could never be remade today. After watching this movie back in the day,we all dreamed of having our little league team play in what was at the time a baseball stadium like no other....The Houston Astrodome. In this 2nd chapter of the Bad News Bears trilogy, the San Fernando Valley-based team is given the opportunity to play in an exhibition game vs the home town Toros in the Astrodome. Having abandoned their coach, the coachless team heads to the lonestar state in hopes of living every young ball player's dream while team leader Kelly pursues the opportunity to reunite with his father, played by William Devane. Watching this movie makes you realizes how much the game has changed for the worse considering this movie was made as recent as the late 1970's. Today, young ball players are doing steroids, major league stars are putting money over fans as their top priority, and teams are threatening to move to other cities if their demands for a new ballpark are not met. Had I told someone in 1977 that this was the future of little league and major league baseball, would they believe me? If you want your young ones to see a great baseball movie full of young but true role models, then get this dvd. Oh,by the way,if you are wondering why I believe this movie could not be remade today, think about this......with all the new stadiums we have seen built in the last 15 years,it would be hard to argue why one stadium should be picked over all the others as the location of filming. I loved it as a kid and still love it to this day and the main reason is because that bimbo Tatum O'Neal is NOT in the movie. Christopher Barnes was hilarious. I don't know why he decided to crawl under a rock and exist now in obscurity, but I still love him. (Kids Love These Bars) 『Our kids (2 and 4) love these bars. They've been eating them since about age 1 -- bars are moist, flavorful. The bars also travel well; we always take them with us on family outings, short or long, and we know the kids will eat them.』
(Loves it) 『I have two children (3 and 21 months), and they love these snack bars. If I let them they will eat a box in two day. (Nice for quick snack or more) 『These bars are tasty and have a good texture. I like the combination of sweet + salty, and I think they are better for you health-wise than other products offering this combination. I like the almond flavor, it is my favorite but I do like the cashew a lot also. Great quick breakfast meal, I would have one of these and a glass of skim milk for a breakfast on the go.』
(Not bad, but nothing I would seek out again...) 『I will begin by saying I'm not a huge cereal bar fan. However there are some I like a great deal and others I can barely swallow. This product is in the middle somewhere. Its a bit sweet. The consistency is good, not too chewy, not too crunchy. I like almonds and they were welcome additions to the bar. It just wasn't enough to move the meter past 50%. My favorite BTW are Clif Bars, especially the Crunchy Peanut Butter variety.
』
(Sweet&Salty Nut bars, the best!) 『The best bars ever! Love the sweet&salty mix. Any "nut lover" will love these!』
(delicious!) 『I was a fan of the peanut Sweet&Salty bars and I was delighted to see an almond version. Excellent flavor and a lots of almonds (they're first on the ingredients list). Only downside is it contains HFCS.』 『Nature Valley sweet and salty almond bars are a perfect balance of chewy granola and delicious real almonds, dipped in an almond butter coating. (Sweetens Toasted Bagels and Rainy Days) 『The sun had not risen, and it would not rise. This day was the kind that never sees light, and knows only rain. Any flicker from lightening was blocked by water plating the window. Coffee could not cure this morning. This took something nature delivered on a brighter day, the highly caloric and twice as sweet gift of honey.
Nancy, my neighbor across the way, smiled from her balcony as we both saw our sunrise walk and breakfast in the park draining with each raindrop. Her yellow sundress belying the circumstance danced as she turned toward her apartment. She signaled me over.
Two bagel halves newly crisped in a convection oven, were browned and ready on a napkin. Great Lakes honey stood at 32 ounces of attention, knowing the bold task ahead. From bottle to spoon to bagel, I brought the honey to its better place, and ate.
No solution could stop the rain, but honey on a bagel in the presence of a friend a morning in May lifted my temper. We laughed until noon.
May your rainiest of days be offset by the sweetest of mornings with Great Lakes Select Honey.
--Brockeim』
(Excellent Taste) 『Great Lakes Select Honey has a mild and sweet taste. We purchased it for our grand-children to spread on their waffles and toast. My husband uses it in his tea, on toast, pancakes and whatever he can spread it on. I gave my daughter one of the three bottles for her tea time. I guess we will be purchasing more soon.』

I wish they mentioned that the hat is for babies who are not too small because my granddaughter is 9 months and it's still too big on her, but it's so pretty that iti s worth waiting for her to grow into. A great gift, with or without the accompanying outfit.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Mediocre quality ... but my daughter loves it!!) 『Fair enough ... for $10 you're getting a costume of pretty mediocre quality. Material is a bit sheer -- fine for dress up in the house but certainly we'll want something underneath before she goes out to a Halloween party. The dress has an unfinished hem (no hem, fabric just ends) at the bottom and the sleeves. (Neckline is nicely finished as shown.)
That all said, my daughter (age 4 1/2) gasped when she saw it and put it on immediately. "I look like a real angel," she sighed. In fact, it trumped a beautifully-made white Disney Princess "wedding" dress we had already borrowed from a friend. She even loves the halo -- it fits without pinching her head nor falling forward or backward like many headbands and a few halos we've tried.
Yes, the product photo is misleading as this comes without wings and wand but we splurged for nicer wings than they would probably include and we happen to have a perfect wand already. I was glad this was "a la carte."』
(Not an angel costume) 『How is it an angel costume if it does not have wings? I completely wasted good money. Just put your child in a white slip or nightgown and make wings.』
(Pleased in PA) 『My son needed an angel costume for his Christmas program. At first he just enjoyed driving the trucks around, then he liked the challenge putting the pieces together properly. Now he's really into mixing and matching the various pieces from all three trucks to build his own super-creation. These trucks are great for developing fine motor skills, building cognitive memory, and inspiring creative and imaginative play. Fun times to be had by all! Highly recommended along with most other Melissa and Doug toys.』
(Jolly trucks) 『My three-plus grandson and I really enjoyed taking the vehicles apart and reassemblng them, then running them over the floor. His seven-plus sister was less interested but joined in, anyway. I had thought, though, that all the vehicles could exchange parts but found that not to be the case, for the most part, a small disappointment. And of course, being made of wood, they won't last as long, if taken outside, as they would if they are kept inside, but they are well-constructed and very attractive and should hold up quite well, if not abused, indoors or out.』 『Melissa&Doug Stacking Construction VehiclesVroooom! This set of three construction vehicles is made of quality wood with 15 pieces that can be taken apart again and again for hours of fun. Your little construction worker will love playing in the sand with the cement truck, dump truck and bull dozer, and you will love how these chunky, rolling vehicles help promote hand/eye coordination and motor skills. Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Hasn't broken on us!) 『I see that one of the major criticisms of this toy is that it breaks. We've had it since Christmas '08 (almost a year) and it's still working fine after a 2&4-year-old have played with it. Having said that, we don't pull this game out everyday or even every week. If I pull the toy out for the kids to play, they get into it. But this isn't a game they pull off the shelf by themselves. They do like it when they play it and I think it's great - it's just not one they play with all the time.』
(My 2 year old loves this game!) 『My son plays this game about 5-10 per day, I wish I had bought it sooner. It is so great that you can move the pieces all around the room or house. Definately glue the base on as another reviewer mentioned.』
(Great while it lasted...) 『I gave this game to a friend, and she raved about it and said her children played it constantly. Unfortunately, after about a month, she said a couple of the animal pieces had broken, and it couldn't be played anymore. Very disappointing...』
(Fun but Fragile) 『Considering the age group this game is targeting - the little ones - their engineers missed an opportunity for design innovation. They made really cute little animals ... that break and fall off their bases.
Like others here, I have glued the animals down on their now broken green bases. I used gorilla glue which worked but puffed up around the feet of the animals.
But it is still in high rotation around here. The box has been taped and re-taped. (Another missed opportunity for design innovation.)
I paid full price, and I think if I had it to do over again I would probably just buy the "big kid" version (HYPER DASH) and have my little ones make do.
But if you get a good price, it is worth the hassles. Our electronics are still working great, with 3 little kids and being played a couple times a week for at least 6 months. 』
(It broke in the first hour!!!!) 『Got it for the kids from the Easter bunny... I think the toy is adorable! BUT it broke with in the first hour. My kids are 5 and 3. ( they are not hard on things ) I have tried over and over to glue the animals to the base. Super Glue, Gorilla Glue, Rubber cement. Nothing works. I feel we are left with little animals floating around the house with no purpose and a waste of money. Don't waste your money or time!』 『From Wild Planet:
Animal Scramble is a really fun game and we thank each customer for their honest feedback; it was through your reviews that we learned how to improve the design of this toy. I basically bought it for myself, but the kids like it too!!』
(Great..) 『This really is a simple cause and effect puzzle and kids love it, they learn animal sounds and to match .』
(Learning from this toy in so many ways) 『I bought this toy for my niece when she was about 16 months old. She loved it. The pictures, the sounds. Three months later, she's grown with the blocks. Before, she lacked the dexterity to orient them in three dimensions so make the animals match up. Now, she can handle three dimensional movement, no problem, and her challenge is to get the front and back to match up in the right directions. She knows what animals they are , knows how to make the sound of all of them (woof woof!), and when a pig or a cow shows up in another book, that she can go over, get the blocks and arrange them to make the sound. She. Loves. Them. Melissa and doug - two thumbs way up.』
(How can you not love this toy??) 『Honestly. Are people ignorant and just negative at every given opportunity? What's with such horrid reviews of this product? One, Melissa&Doug has the BEST customer service. If your sound blocks don't give the desired noise, call M&D. They'll send you new ones free of charge. Seriously. (They very happily replaced my train puzzle bc it didn't make the requisite "whoo whoo" noise.) Two, I love a puzzle that has only two pieces. What parent wouldn't?? And, finally, this toy really does challenge younger children. We had it forever, and my son always loved to help me put the pieces together. At 20 months, he assembled his first match on his own - much to his and my surprise and delight. He now loves to make all the matches, many times over. This puzzle is definitely more of a challenge than the ones w/the corresponding picture or shape under each piece (a lot of M&D puzzles).』
(Wonderful concept) 『I love this toy no little pieces too lose - fun for infant to toddler. Makes great sounds. My youngest has enjoyed it at 1 month (the sounds) and my oldest now 3.5 still loves it. An great easy introduction to puzzles for toddlers and a great introduction to animals for infants. Win win! Not to mention its cute - I can display it instead of hide in with our plethora of plastic toys.』 『A classic favorite! Animals "sound off" when the two wooden cubes are properly placed in the wooden tray. Find the halves that match and listen to six different realistic farm animal sounds. Develops visual perception and fine motor skills.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great is the understatement of the YEAR!!) 『This remind me so much of what my Grandma use to make for me and my sisters! The recipes are true to what they have always been but with a modern twist I guess youcould say. Everything you put in your mouth is just so GREAT!』
(A fabulous treat for those in love with breakfast pastries) 『I admit it; I could happily live on breakfast alone. More specifically, luscious quick breads, muffins, and pastries. I have over two dozen baking books, but I still enjoy seeking out new recipes for pound cakes, quick breads, and international pastries such as danishes, croissants, and strudels. I bought Carole Walter's "Great Coffee Cakes" while on vacation in Petoskey, MI (if you happen to be in town, check out the divine kitchen store Cutler's, where I purchased this).
The first recipe I tried was the sticky buns, which were a flop. However, that was due to the fact that I was trying to proof yeast with no thermometer (baking on vacation in a sparsely equipped rental unit is always an adventure), so it is quite likely that I used too low a temperature to activate the yeast. The sticky topping was excellent, though. Once back home, I made several other recipes, and all were delicious, particularly the cherry almond cake and the Greek semolina cake (if you like Middle Eastern cuisine, this is quite similar to basboosah, a semolina cake soaked in a honey syrup).
The recipes are rated according to level of difficulty, which is illustrated by measuring cup graphics (one cup means easy, while three is difficult). The ingredients are largely things that you probably already have in your cupboards or pantry; there are few exotic ingredients other than crystallized ginger or flavored liqueurs such as Grand Marnier. The ingredients are clearly laid out, and if a recipe calls for another recipe from the book, the page number is given. There are numerous helpful sidebars with practical advice to help you make the most of your creations, such as working with yeast, what to do with scraps, freezing yeasted doughs, and baking advice. Nor is the book limited to breakfast; Carole also provides luscious cookies such as glazed ricotta cookies, biscotti, black chocolate madeleines, and several variations on rugelach, bar cookies, and spreads (cranberry orange, maple pecan, dried pear, toasted walnut, and blue cheese) to round out your day.
As other reviewers have noted, there are a few small errors and omissions, but nothing major (Carole has thoughtfully posted the corrections on her official website). If you live for muffins, sticky buns, and comforting old-fashioned pound cakes, this book is for you. If you're looking for divine danishes (a bit more advanced), croissants and strudels, you'll find those as well. There's something here for all levels of bakers from novice to pro, and I loved the international touches such as babka (Polish yeast bread), Greek coffee cake, stollen, and pain au chocolat. I would have liked to see a few more illustrations (there are color photos in the center), but that's a minor quibble for an otherwise outstanding guide to breakfast baked goods. 』

To me, there was no plot, just one big bully session after another. The way he treated Norris got to be annoying after a while and took away from the erotic scenes. I would have liked to see him acting just a tiny bit human with her. His "me--macho, you--Jane" bit really hit all the wrong nerves with me. She was a sucessful woman with her own business, but of course being over weight meant she had no self-control or dignity, so here comes super Adrian to take over her life and give her self-control and dignity. I enjoy a good BDSM book with male Doms, but I repeat, Adrian is just a big bully. I finished reading the book hoping it would get better. But to the very end, it ran along the same line. It landed in the trash. I'm going to give this author one more shot, but I hope her heroes are at least human in other books.』
(If all personal trainers were like this, I'd go to the gym more often.) 『I really liked the premise of this bdsm story--girl goes to a spa to lose a little weight and ends up with a new man. And what an alpha male he is! I would like to meet one of these guys, myself. But the story was really good and intellignet and really drew me in. I have to say this is a keeper. Read it, read it, read it! Also liked and would recommend---Breaking the Girl and Eager to Please: Two Erotic Novels of Submission.』
(Personal trainers are hot!) 『Fun different story to read. Motivates you to hit the gym on top of getting a thrill!』
(Sweet Discipline) 『So....Norris wants to lose weight to impress some shmo at work who never notices her. I hate when women do that, but far be it for me to judge....oops, I think I was judging. Anyway, Norris' trainer is Adrian, a very dominant hot man.
Adrian keeps Norris nude, puts her through grueling work outs and demands she submit to him. I would find this an odd sort of fat farm, but hey, that's me. Adrian senses Norris' need to submit, but I never really understood where he got that from.
Norris eventually submits in totallity to Adrian and becomes his perfect submissive while at the spa. Clearly their feelings are growing, but it's hard to see why - they don't actually communicate.
When Norris leaves the spa, she is trim and happy, but misses Adrian. She finally goes to him and agrees to submit to him always and I find that scene a little brutal since she had never done that with him before. I just don't get how they fell in love. I wanted to like this book better, but it was just missing some elements for me.』
(I can't get this story out of my mind) 『Tight plotting. Good grammar. Excellent editing. Mostly DS, but more than a couple teaspoons worth of some pulse-poundingly realistic BDSM.A+ for the technical stuff.
The sex scenes were explosive and steamy, and definitely hotter for the excellent BDSM elements. Very well-done, those BDSM touches. From the confusion and muscle-pulling pain of one of the beginning sequences (her, the bar and darkness) to the explosive and wildly exciting final bit of playtime, this novel accurately portrays how it feels and what happens when one is falling into the silky aching heat of an enduring BDSM relationship.
Good story, too. Yes, there is a story in this novel and it does more than just carry the protagonists from sex scene to sex scene. The story is essential to the sex scene, actually. Who would believe this kinda thing at all, even in a sexy novel, without a halfway believeable story?
I finished this book and went to bed, where its heat and story line invaded my dreams. Even taking into consideration the tiny problem of her giving fully informed consent ahead of time (something that would [almost] always happen in reality--otherwise we call it a sex crime, right?) this is still among the very best BDSM-leaning erotic romance fiction I have ever read.
This book gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up from me! (Or should that be 'bottoms up'?)』 『Sweet Discipline By Bonnie Hamre When Norris Brownell registers at an exclusive diet spa to further her career and salvage her social life, she expects the usual regimen of diet, exercise and behavior modification. However, Adrian, her personal trainer, knows that won't do. He's determined to train her to discipline her body and her impulses for more than portion control. He wants her for himself. She's initially appalled and resistant to his methods, but as her body slims and her sensual needs expand, she finds herself dealing with cravings that only Adrian can satisfy. Norris may lose much more than just pounds at the hand of her sensual trainer. Note: Sweet Discipline contains multiple scenes of discipline and is not for the faint of heart.』
