(Purists may hate me, but...) 『these songs sound terrific remixed! Who better to do the remixing then Owen Bradley, who produced the original tracks. There are those who bemoan that the songs have been remixed, but the original versions are available in pristine form elsewhere. These are slight variations on the originals, and the result is a freshening up of the terrific performances. If you love Patsy Cline's music, you'll love this disc!』
(worth listening) 『though this is an old record, but it is still worth listening, esp the title " Crazy" now seems become popular again.』
(Why change the background?) 『The soundtrack is great, because of Patsy's voice. I don't understand why they had to change the background for the movie- All they had to do was use the original 4-Star material that Patsy recorded. Maybe they weren't able to do so, due to copywrights and such. Whatever the case, even if I like the original backgrounds better, they are an interesting change. My favorite track is "San Antiono Rose." It's always been one of my favorite Patsy songs and it sounds great with an alternate background. I recommend this album to add to your Patsy collection if you are a fan!!』

(The last one) 『Of these 12 songs, you'll get the 45 version of "Love is Like Oxygen" from Sweet, which is fine. The album version is nothing spectacular and I think is seldom ever played anyway. There are lots of great obscurities here but nothing really fantastic. Rhino was definitely clutching at straws to put this collection together but it's not nearly as bad as Volume 24. In fact, if Volumes 24 and 25 were reversed, I'd just get rid of Volume 24, because although nothing seemed to be really butchered on volume 24 (except Chuck Mangione's hit), most of the tracks of Volume 24 are Rhino's worse gathering of the Seventies obscure hits. But, that's my opinion. I've generally favored the earlier seventies pop over the later seventies, anyway.
However, for Volume 25, my favorites are "Falling" by LeBlanc and Carr, "My Angel Baby" by Toby Beau, "Lead Me On' by Maxine Nightengale, and definitely "Oh Well" (the old Fleetwood Mac classic) by The Rockets. 』

(Carlo Maria Giulini Delivers the Perfect Verdi Requiem) 『For all the fine performances of the Verdi 'Manzoni Requiem' this 1989 recording with Carlo Maria Giulini conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the Ernst-Senff-Chorus and the perfect quartet of American soloists - Sharon Sweet, soprano, Florence Quivar, mezzo-soprano, Vinson Cole, tenor, and Simon Estes, bass - is for this listener the finest. Few conductors can match the sense of hallowed greatness of this work that many feel is Verdi's greatest 'opera'. In this performance he captures all the drama, the terror of the final day of judgment, the antiphonal brass effects that come through well in this superb sonic display, and at the same time he is able to offer the most tender moments of the work with a hushed reverence that calls for a unified approach from all of his resources.
To say that the Berlin Philharmonic plays well for him is too obvious; that the chorus rises to the broad spectrum of dynamics with complete commitment is likewise not surprising. What is a revelation here is the manner in which Giulini worked with each of the soloists to mold his uncanny interpretation. Sharon Sweet has the power for the declamatory passages as well as the gentle pianissimos of her exposed solos. Florence Quivar's voice seems to have no breaks at all between the high and low ranges of her demanding role; her voice is pure gold. Vinson Cole may seem an odd choice for a Verdi work, but here he makes the tenor solos and participation in the quartet clarion clear with a voice that never feels strained or less than beautiful. Simon Estes is a true bass who is able to utter the haunting 'Mors stupebit' in a manner that makes all other basses seem superficial in their delivery.
The recorded sound is rich and immediate; perhaps choosing to record the work in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin adds to the sonic splendor that makes the Requiem seem even more credible a work. This is a recording that deserves all prizes it has won and should be part of the library of every music lover. It is definitive! Grady Harp, November 09』
(A Meaningful Verdi Requiem) 『Carlo Maria Giulini was a gentle and spiritual man by reputation. This recording of the Verdi Requiem wih the Berlin Phil from 1989 represents Giulini's devotion to what some call Verdi's best opera, "The Verdi Requiem." In addition to his passionate conducting Giulini has the Berlin Philharmonic, an orchestra that played well for him on several occasions, a first rate chorus and Sharon Sweet, Florence Quivar, Vinson Cole and Simon Estes as solists. Verdi challenges his performers in this work. Especially the soloists, most of all the soprano soloist. The soloists really do a wonderful job here. My most questionable choice on this recording was that of Vinson Cole as the tenor soloist. Having heard him in an art song recital and being very moved, I thought he would be too light for a Verdi's Requiem. I usually think of Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Carlo Bergonzi, Placido Domingo or Jussi Bjoerling as ideal for the tenor solo in this work. Vinson Cole has a lighter timbre then those singers, but you forget that when you listen to his musicality. He brings a beautiful cupo color to his singing several time in this performance. In the "Ingemisco" he handles both high b flats with ease. Simon Estes does a fine job as the bass soloist, including a beautiful pianissimo on the word "benedictis" in the bass solo "Confutatis." Florence Quivar sings very beautifully in the "Liber Scriptus" that Verdi sets so skillfully. The soloist who is challenged the most in this work is the soprano. The "Libera me" puts the ball in the sopranos court because it is her, chorus and orchestra. Sharon Sweet, a dramatic soprano does more than live up to the challenge. She sings beautifully and sells this section at the same time. Giulini's coachings with the soloists really paid off because of his sense of colors and word stress. He asks the soloists to sing soft in sections that are often sung forte to great effect. I was very moved by every aspect of this recording. I bought it expecting to love Giulini and the orchestra and have mixed feelings about the soloists and chorus. Luckily the performance proved me wrong.』
(Simply Sublime!) 『This performance of Verdi's Requiem is simply sublime. Giulini gets just right balance between dramatic expression and religious reverence. Singers are all superb and free from operatic exaggeration which mars so many other recordings. Berlin P and the choir creates truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. Most beautifully recorded with wonderful acoustics in Jesus-Christus Kirche.

(Magnificent) 『Why are there four different recordings of Verdi's Missa da Requiem by Carlo Maria Giulini currently listed through Amazon.com? (I counted them. Four!) They are not there because the work is, as we know, well loved. Rather, there has never been a Verdi master in my time so skilled at presenting the Missa at once as the beautiful, powerful, and spiritual communication it is. Giulini dominated many interpretations of Verdi's music during the last half of the 20th century as few could. He was respected for his artistry, the balance between feeling and power in presenting Verdi's music, and because he knew the difference between speed and musical velocity.
Enough praise for the Great One! However, personally I miss him so much. The beauty he brought from everything he touched was a constant sunrise, and he never called attention to himself. He was a baton poet.
This Requiem from Berlin is different from all the others I have heard by Giulini (I have three of his.). It is more beautiful, the sound is better, the soloists (duets, quartets too) sing rapturously, the choir is very good, and the orchestra is so very great. With such masterful direction and this great orchestra's playing, it makes me sorry to say "Ich bin nicht ein Berliner!" I have loved the way the BPO played for Giulini in Mahler's Das Lied, Beethoven's 9th, and now the Verdi Missa da Requiem.
This performance is the recorded swan song for the Missa da Requiem of one of the most luminous Verdi masters to ever touch the ground. Listen to it and you will soar. Get it as fast as you can.
Personally I am always torn between Brahm's German Requiem and Verdi's Missa for my favorite piece of music. Although I love many great compositions, right now my favorite between the two mentioned is Giulini's great performance of Verdi's Missa da Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ernst Senff Choir and many great soloists. It is very rich and, and at my age of 68, I think I shall not hear too many performances more beautiful than this one. Ah, but after having heard it, I say to myself, "This one is enough."

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (THE WHEELS OF A CINEMA REVOLUTION BEGINNING TO CHURN.) 『D.W. Griffith fuses Thomas Bailey Aldrich's long poem of Judith's story with its basis in the Apocrypha to derive this somewhat austere and powerful film of the widow's noble sacrifice to save her besieged city and its inhabitants from an invading Assyrian army, led by Holofernes. With JUDITH as Griffith's first feature length effort, he turns away from the commercial needs of the Biograph Company, the management of which desires to maintain its policy of making only one and two reelers, and his expenditure of $36000 is double the amount budgeted, reflecting his expanded use of sets and extras and providing the requisite exercise in preparation for his next major work: BIRTH OF A NATION, made as a free agent. Eighteen year old Blanche Sweet's performance is striking as she utilizes all of her wide range of expressivity, uncommon in one so young, to mirror the emotions of a woman who is physically attracted to a man, Henry Walthall as Holofernes, toward whom her only possible final act will be his death by her hand, as depicted in many a well-known painting. The supporting cast serves the sparsely titled production well, with emotional performances from Mae Marsh and Robert Harron as endangered lovers, and among the many bit players who animate the work may be seen Lionel Barrymore, Harry Carey, Antonio Moreno and Lillian and Dorothy Gish as victims of the invaders. This version is the four reeler rather than the one of six reels released later and is Griffith's answer to the full-length epics which were being imported from Europe; its release was delayed a year by Biograph to ensure that the director had left its employ, but this brought scant gain to the company: Biograph was soon defunct, while Griffith's star was rising.
』
(Griffith begins the feature film) 『Judith of Bethulia is a very interesting biblical epic, starring several of Griffith's stable of actors at Biograph, such as Blanche Sweet (in the title role), Henry B. Walthall (as Holofernes) and Lillian Gish (as a woman with a baby). The scenes within the city are shot extremely well, with appropriate period detail.
Home, Sweet Home is a truly lovely film, especially when you see it, as I did, with live music and two singers! Walthall and Gish excel as composer John Howard Payne and his faithful sweetheart. Robert Harron and Mae Marsh, in another section of the film, are touching and amusing as young lovers from very different backgrounds. Jack Pickford (Mary's brother) and Donald Crisp appear in yet another section of the film. The four stories are very different, bound together by the song "Home, Sweet Home". Griffith took huge creative license in his portrayal of Payne, showing him as a dissolute, hard-living lout, whereas the real Payne's only major problem was his inability to handle money. Walthall is exceptional as Payne, and he makes you believe his character completely.』
(Two Important Early Griffith Films) 『Anyone delving just slightly into the history of film-making will soon come upon the name of D.W. Griffith, either in connection with his most famous epics such as"The Birth of a Nation"and"Intolerance", or how he pioneered film-making in the early years of motion pictures. This tape features two of his feature films from 1913 and 1914, and they would certainly be of interest to anyone following the stages of Griffith's work, or simply in the development of film-making generally. Although from the same period, these two films are totally different:"Judith of Bethulia"was inspired by spectacular Italian epics popular at that time (such as"Cabiria"and"Last Days of Pompeii"for example) and was based on a stage play, and the expenses incurred for such a production cost Griffith his job with the Biograph Company. Despite this, the film was a success, with its artistic expression, dramatic acting, fascinating costumes and interesting sets. The story is set in Bible times and depicts the attempted capture by the Assyrians of the walled city of Bethulia, but before the inhabitants starve to death in their beleaguered city, Judith is inspired with a plan to rescue her people. I also found the music - organ by Gaylord Carter - to be especially good and well-suited to each scene.
The seocnd film,"Home Sweet Home"was written and directed by DW Griffith, and is a forerunner to"Intolerance"a few years later, having four different stories with the same theme woven throughout. Unlike"Intolerance", however, these four stories are complete and are shown one after the other, although there is an interesting epilogue that finishes the first story, and that unites all four stories under the same banner, namely the moral quest to find happiness in the home, the family unit, be it in marriage or between brothers. In contrast to"Judith of Bethulia", this is a fast-paced film with more intertitles and various messages to think about. I enjoyed both films very much and recommend them to anyone interested in good quality early films.』
(Silent but good!) 『"Judith of Bethulia"is the first (and only, up to this point in time) drama that I have seen on a deuterocanonical book in the Bible. The only other film that I can think of is the animated one called"Maccabees: The Story of Hannukah,"which I have not yet seen. (This is really a 1913 production. It is the other included drama, which is titled"Home Sweet Home,"that was completed in 1914.) The acting was rather well done and the Biblical messages were in tact although the script was not completely accurate to the Bible. I strongly encourage people to see a Biblical production like this for a change.
I also appreciated the ending of"Home Sweet Home."』
(Exctatic, expressive and emotion work of art) 『I think it's tragic that this incredible form of art is dead (Thanks a lot, Jolsen...). I watched this in my film history class (the silent era) and it really blew me away. Its amazing how boring realistic acting can be. This film made me realise that the reason endings in todays movies are usually their ultimate ruin is the freakin dialogue! If you want good dialogue, read a book. If you want great acting, well aside from one mediocre one performance by the hero soldier, watch a good silent film like this one. It's all physical acting, which I for one love. The only thing that keeps this from a five star rating is the all too tedious battle scenes. Well it's a war film essentially. Yeah I know it was really fascinating to see people move on screen back then but thats the only part thats really dated. sometimes its downright boring. But Lilian Gish really comes through and makes you wonder why actors aren't very good at conveying emotions believably anymore. To get a bit philosophical, I tend to think it's because people are so plagued by the insecurities generated by television that they need overwhelming self-confidence to convince us that they can act at all well. But that's my opinion. As far as this goes...real good stuff!』

It's boring, with a weak plot and surprisingly lackluster acting from Ali and AJ who are usually good performers. I bought it for my 8 year old daughter because she likes their singing and enjoyed "Cow Belles." But I think even a parent with Liberal ideology (which is what this film blatantly pushes), would be embarassed by this pathetic attempt at entertainment. To say I was disappointed would be a huge understatement.』

(Slow and Boring) 『I do not care for the TV series but its appeal was showcasing spoiled, out-of-control children of parents with more money than brains. However, I watched this movie because of Alyson and Amanda's (Aly&AJ) involvement. Unfortunately, without the reality appeal, the story was boring and the movie draggy. The acting was ok but the plot was weak and the script was unrealistic. I sensed a disconnect between the actors and the movie as if they were sleepwalking through it. It was a waste of all the actors' talents. Watch it as a dollar rental.』
(Aly and AJ Fans Be Warned!!!) 『 No matter how big a fan you are of Aly and AJ, be warned `My Super Sweet 16' is nails on a chalkboard!!! Every single last minute is painful.
How was Coleman Francis allowed to make the worst films ever? Simple, they were his films he paid for. There was no one to tell him or stand in his way of making those awful films.
The fact the several people wrote, directed, edited, and produced a film this bad is truly disturbing.
The dialogue of `My Super Sweet 16' reads as if it was written by a 10 year old. "Oh I'm so sure. As if. Like what is your problem? Know what?"
These 13 words repeated for 10 minutes is torture. 90 minutes is enough to shoot your TV. I can honestly not recall the last time I saw a film this truly painful to watch. 90 minutes of nails on a chalkboard.
From these 13 words I was able to derive some type of plot about AJ's sweet 16 birthday party and evil Aly (they're not sisters) scheming to sabotage it. Beyond that all was lost.
`My Super Sweet 16' is truly one of the all time worst films ever made and a horrific waste of Aly and AJ's talents. 』
(Bad acting = cheap movie) 『I was eager to see this since I was a fan of the tv series. First of all, the black her, she is not a good actress. You can tell this movie had a low budget, another reason why it was not put into the theaters, on top of a bad movie. The plot is basically like the show, 2 girls try to outbeat eachother in parties. But, in this movie, the girls in the end end up realizing they were being greedy and that it all went to their heads, not like the show. Hellogoodbye performs like half of a song. Aly was definatly better in this movie than her sister, I have to say. But they were both okay, the best thing in the movie. Aj plays a stereotypical animal/nature girl, and ALY plays the rich, spoiled girl. I could barely sit through this, sorry but it SUCKED. I think that this movie is best for the younger preteens, who also like high school musical, zac efron, hannah montana, suite life of zac&cody etc... disney kids.

Can fellow student and documentary-maker Shannon (Brendan Miller) help reconcile the old friends or will their sweet 16 mark the end of a life-long friendship? Starting from the nice credits and music you immediately like this film and this is just the beginning. Trintignant finds a corpse in a nightclub, beside the lovely Aulin who just says "I wasn't it". Convinced that she is innocent, he wants to help her and wants to find out the murderer. Aulin's brother should solve this case, as both are searching for him.
Though not quite without problems. The Story itself is not that convincing (rather unimportant).
But what here is really of interest is the unconventional style of Brass: split screen (even triple split screens) some scenes in black and dark yellow filter and more, and in the "middle" of course, the presence of two very convincing leads: cool Trintignant and hot Ewa Aulin (somehow priceless here in white fishnet stockings). The result is a quite ok giallo with (obviously) strong references to pop art.
In the same year Aulin and Trintignant appeared in the avant garde 1968 Giallo masterpiece "Death Laid an Egg", Col Cuore in Gola is not great as the Death Laid an Egg film but is definitely entertaining.』 『Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 04/28/2009 Run time: 105 minutes』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excellent Product/Price for the Little Prima Ballerina) 『This tutu was purchased on Amazon and shipped to my toddler niece in another state. I wasn't sure of it's quality or actual texture/appearance, but for the price, I wasn't too worried. When I later received pictures of her wearing it and twirling around her home, I was so pleased at what I saw! The fabric fell in graceful, sheer folds (not stiff and sticking out all around)and fit her perfectly. She is 3 years old. This little tutu has become such a favorite that she wears it out to dinner over her jeans, to bed over her jammies, and just about anywhere she goes. She is rarely seen without it. This item is worth it's weight in gold, yet was a mere[...]. I have recommended it to friends and couldn't be more pleased. (Cute for the price, but breaks easy) 『I was looking for a toy for my 21 month old daughter because she seemed to have an interest in "fixin it". I found these on here and they are really cute and just right for her to go around "fixin" stuff. (phanthom waltz) 『the coulter series is very down to earth and i like that it has included people with disabilities and presents how thay can go on to lead normal lives.in phantom waltz the challenges boyh physical and psychological were well presented. i'm up to book 5 in the series and can't wait to read the last one.i would have liked to see the author intertwine the past characters in each suceedin book so the reader can keepup.she did accomplish that in MY Sunshine.i like to see how the characters evolve.i was hooked when i read phantom and had to purchase and read the rest.』
(sweetnothing) 『Catherine Anderson is such a romantic. Her books are so easy to loose yourself in. She lets them relate to real life but yet have fairytale in them still.』
(Jake Coulter is a good reason to read this book) 『This is the first book of Catherine Anderson that i've ever read. I think the best thing about this book is the hero - Jake Coulter. I'm impressed that Anderson managed to create him in such a balanced manner so that he appears utterly perfect, yet somewhat realistic to the reader. Jake says all the right things, does all the right things, and has such good heart and instincts, you can't help but fall in love with him too. Particularly when Jake enjoys his heroine's curves so blatantly, which in itself is a refreshing and sigh-inducing change from the other heroes in other romance novels.
Really though, Jake is the only good reason to stay with this book, which i felt was way too long. The heroine, Molly, tends to get on my nerves after a while. I get that she'd been abused for many years, is traumatized beyond reason and has many insecurities, but i kept wishing for her to grow a back bone and stand up for herself instead of agonising silently while the evil villains decide her fate. I find myself not being able to feel for Molly after a certain point, like all she seems to be is sweet and not much else. There is almost no character or personality to her. In fact, when Jake realises he's in love with Molly only abt a quarter way into the book, i'm terribly unconvinced; there just hasn't been much of Molly shown at this point to make me believe that anyone could have fallen for her, much less Jake! I understand flawed and broken women as much as the next person, but i'm just not seeing the redeeming quality of strength in Molly that makes her lovable. Bottom line, Jake was one helluva hero, too bad Molly was only lukewarm at best and downright annoying at worst.』
(Sweet Nothings) 『Wonderful! Catherine Anderson keeps the reader interested from the 1st word to the last word of the book. I have enjoyed many of her books and look forward to reading many more.』 『When Molly Wells showed up at Jake Coulter's ranch, she had nothing but some extra clothes, a stolen horse, and a fear of her ex-husband that threatened to rule her life. She'd heard Jake was a real-life horse whisperer-and perhaps the only man alive who could help the beautiful stallion that her ex-husband had so bitterly abused. But she had no idea that Jake's talents would work their magic on her, with the same power to gain her trust, give her strength, and whisper away her deepest fears.
"No one writes riveting emotion quite like Catherine Anderson. Her talent for delving into rich, emotional depths is unmatched." (Romantic Times)

I could not be happier that Coach Wooden also called both places his home. Though he clearly is a midwesterner at heart---as am I now---his legend truly grew in Los Angeles.
As my title indicates, we need more coaches like John Wooden here in 2008. Can you imagine what the current crop of college ballers would be like if they had a mentor and role model like Wooden? He had depth, insight, was spiritual, a reader, a thinker, etc. This was not required, but he knew all these attributes were necessary to grow "student athletes" into successful players and adults. Even a hippie like Bill Walton, the antithesis to a noble, mature person like Wooden---respects and admires "Coach." Wooden knew how to reach all. His quotes---taken from other coaches, his father and his own mind---are ones to heed. I have the Pyramid of Success on my wall at work.
He hated dunking, showboating, selfishness, hedonism, etc. He'd loathe the brainwashing and lack of civility rampant on today's college and high school campuses.
This bio spans a wonderful, rich life, leaving no stone or thought unturned; no mind or theory unchallenged or ungrown.
A remarkbale living legend, G-d bless Mr. Wooden (who is still alive at the age of 97) and all he has done for the game and collegians everywhere.』
(Secrets of Life) 『John Wooden has figured out some of the secrets of life. And he passes them on directly, in a way that can be transformational for a reader.
John Wooden is a hero of mine. His own heroes include Abraham Lincoln and Mother Theresa. Like them, he is a treasure for all of us because his life and lessons demonstrate what it means to live to "our personal best" in a way that is simple, profound and so clear.
This book should be required reading in "Human Being 101".』
(Wooden's Personal Best) 『We grow up hearing about the importance of developing " good character", not always knowing what it is, or just how to obtain it. All of Wooden's books give his personal guidelines for developing character and living a decent life, whether we are athletes, musicians, teachers, or anything else. Wooden's teachings have stood the test of time. His life and those he has influenced are proof of that. I use his wisdom for myself, and I pass it on to all my students. They all know who John Wooden is. His life blesses us all.』
(revealing, pleasant read) 『John Wooden is one of my heroes. When I was growing up, his teams were dominant, but more importantly, they made the game beautiful to watch. After he retired at the peak of his game, he quietly stepped off the stage. With the rush of books on leadership in the 1990's through the present, it was inevitable, and overdue, that folks take time to examine Coach Wooden's approach to leadership. This has led to a cottage industry in Wooden books.
This book is short, personal and focuses on life lessons learned from the narrative of Coach's life. It doesn't attempt to be weighty, just a good read, that imparts wisdom without hitting you over the head with it. It touches on each chapter of Coach Wooden's life, and particularly shows the infuence of his father, his high school and college coaches and his growth thru experience
This is a fun, easy read that leaves the reader wiser. Highly recommend』
(Good for coaches) 『This is a great book to help any coach of any sport get a good feel for the right way to coach young players. Teach them good life lessons and skills. It gives an insight into a great coach and even greater man.』 『
For John Wooden's millions of fans comes a new and revealing self-portrait--the people and events that shaped his life
Sports Illustrateddeclared: "There has never been a finer coach in American sports than John Wooden. Nor a finer man." ESPN selected him as the "Greatest Coach of the 20th Century." From his birth on an Indiana tenant farm, to All-American honors at Purdue, to his historic recordsetting UCLA dynasty, John Wooden is a towering figure in 20th-century sports, and his experience and wisdom an American treasure. InMy Personal Best, Coach Wooden tells how he did it and the lessons he learned on his remarkable journey.
Pairing never-before-seen photos from Coach Wooden's private collection with his personal stories and affirmations, this book encompasses the dramatic arc of Wooden's larger-than-life achievements and experiences. As he did in his perpetual bestseller Wooden, Coach offers a wealth of biographical details, personal reflections, and a lifetime of lessons. His millions of fans will cherish this definitive pictorial history of a living sports legend.

I was surprised and pleased by the skill in which Ms. Deveraux brought the criminal element into the novel. This book will not please the typical Deveraux romance reader but, if you're into the history of jazz and the speakeasies of the time, crime and mystery, this is a very entertaining read.』
(Favorite Read for Jude's Fans) 『SWEET LIAR is a favorite of Deveraux fans. Samantha Elliot travels to New York from her Louisville home to locate a trace of a grandmother who'd disappeared when Sam was a baby. Her landlord, Michael Taggert becomes the love of her life and he helps her untangle a life that went wrong on a bloody night in 1928. The mystery gets lost, but the story flows for a rapid read. Nash Black, a Kentucky author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and HAINTS.』
(Jude Deveraux at her best!) 『Sweet Liar would have to be #5 on my list wittily dubbed as my "Top Ten Favorite Jude Deveraux Books" (after the Velvet series, of course). The reason why I love this book so much? The hero, Michael Taggert.
Following the death of her father, divorcee Samantha Elliot travels to New York City to fulfill an odd condition of his will: she has to live in the city for a year and see what she can find out about her grandmother, who disappeared immediately after the murder of Samantha's mother when Sam was very young. To help - or compel - her, her dad has sold their house out from under her and taken a twelve-month lease on an apartment in Manhattan, so Samantha really has no choice but to obey her father's wishes. She arrives at the apartment and meets (in a very unorthodox fashion) her landlord, the oh-so-attractive, oh-so-charming, oh-so-wealthy Michael Taggert.
Jude Deveraux definitely delivered some terrific one-line zingers (such as the old lady who wonders why a young woman would blush at her mention of making love: "Why is it every generation thinks it invented sex?").
Next to Jamie Fraser (of Diane Gabaldon's Outlander), Mike Taggert has to be one of my favorite romance heroes. The man is pure fantasy, and nobody does a fantasy man as well as Jude Deveraux. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, Mike is a complete character. And completely appealing, to boot. When he tells Samantha, "I'm Michael Taggert, and I'm a different man," my bones just melt.
What reader could resist a man who drags the woman he loves on an all-day shopping and makeover marathon at Saks Fifth Avenue, who insists on spending oodles of money on her, who worries about her health and spirits even when she's not worried about herself, who helps her discover the truth about her family's shady past, who teaches her to appreciate and celebrate who she is, who breaks down the walls of negativity built up by her ex-husband, and who's drop-dead gorgeous to boot? This guy suffers from a refreshing drop of self-doubt, by the way, and he's never let all his money go to his head. He also loves, loves, loves kids. Here's how Deveraux describes him:
He was the most perfectly formed man she'd [Samantha] ever imagined. He was movie stars, men in underwear commercials, guys at the gym, the construction worker in the red T-shirt who'd whistled at her but she'd pretended she hadn't heard; he was the men in three-piece suits whose brains were as sexy as their bodies; he was lazy, indolent seventeen-year-old boys whose muscles bulged out of their clothes, rodeo stars, and those smooth-cheeked, eyeglassed men who held their children tenderly. He was all of them.
I'll take one of each, please.』
(Boring....boring....yawn) 『Gosh - this book was so boring that I skipped a good two hundred pages and still understood what happened. Firstly, let me list the common factors in all of JD's books:
1. A heroine who is beautiful but likes hiding her looks for some stupid contrived reason (Legend, Sweet Liar, A Knight in Shining Armor). 2. She also suffers from low self-esteem and comes up with stupid reasons to look down on herself...all resulting in men treating her like s**t. 3. A story that involves either time-travel or hynotism, bringing her into the past.
Yet, while I did somehow manage to finish Legend and A Knight in Shining Armor, I read about 200 pages of Sweet Liar, skipped the next 150 pages in disgust and just read the ending. And you know what! I didn't miss anything, it seemed.
The only JD book that I liked was Remembrance, but only when Talis&Callie make an appearance. I wish I could've skipped the first 60 pages but I might not have understood what was going on then... Skip Sweet Liar; it's boring...』
(Wonderful Service and a great book.) 『I have most of this author's books and this book made me want to order the rest. I got my book accurately, the condition is new and the customer service was great. I would recommend this seller and author to anyone. Great service』 『
It was her father's dying wish that Samantha Elliot search for her grandmother, who'd disappeared from Louisville when she was a baby. So here she was, in big, dirty New York City...her parents were dead, her divorce was final, and she was all alone....
Michael Taggert was Samantha's landlord, and he was easily the most beautiful man she'd ever seen. He was charming, too -- his zest for life was so contagious that in his presence Sam bloomed like a flower after the rain. Yet Mike could only get so far with her -- when he tried to get closer, it was like running into a brick wall.
But Mike wouldn't give up. As they probed her grandmother's past, he was slowly uncovering the joy and affection Samantha had buried long ago -- and leading them closer to the dangerous truth about a bloody spring night in 1928, and a seductive blues singer named Maxie....』
