Aside from the enhanced sound and additional demo cuts, disc 2 features some incredible live cuts. This includes a cover of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" and a version of "Girlfriend" that features different, yet awesome guitar riffs. If you're a Matthew Sweet fan considering the purchase of this Legacy Edition, stop thinking about it!』
(Power-pop nirvana) 『The original release of Sweet's third album in 1991 laid down a power-pop gauntlet for the decade. His collection of fifteen songs (augmented here to 18 with the addition of tracks featured on various import issues) perfectly balanced his talents and influences in a way its predecessors and successors never managed. Gone were the '80s production excesses of his debut, in was the electric inferno of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd's guitars. Gone were the fanboy sci-fi lyrics of the preceding "Earth" LP, in were words of love, betrayal and seething anger.
Sweet's singing is nearly spiritual in its sublime expressions of joy and heartbreak. It's the sort of palpable, heart-on-sleeve emotion that marks the best power pop, from The Beatles through Big Star, Dwight Twilley, Teenage Fanclub and others. Sweet's follow-up albums would give in to rock guitar excess, losing the focus and compactness that's allowed "Girlfriend" to retain its original power fifteen years on. Sweet, Lloyd and Velvet Crush drummer Ric Menck open the album with a crushing blow of rhythmic pop, highlighted by Lloyd's dazzling solo atop Sweet's riffing electric guitar and pounding bass. Sweet sings as a lost man, praying for a sign to point the way; the album then rewinds to reveal how he came to this desolate place.
"I've Been Waiting" captures the euphoric first flush of love with a chiming mix of electric and acoustic guitars. The noose is set in "Girlfriend" when Sweet realizes his needs, accompanied by Quine's muscular guitar and Sweet's multi-tracked harmonies. Love's brilliance is blinding in "Looking at the Sun" and belies an underlying fracture that grows into jealousy and neediness with the busy phone line of "Winona" (underlined by Greg Leisz heartbreaking pedal steel). The comic-book fantasy of "Evangeline" diverts the singer's attention only momentarily before the hammer falls. And when it falls, it falls hard. Very, very hard.
The dragging tempo and Lennon-like splats of rhythm guitar spell the beginning of the end on "Day for Night." The bitter "Thought I Knew You" provides Sweet the vehicle to release years of pent-up resentment, seething with the question "how can I describe the way you slowly put my hope away?" Leisz's pedal steel returns for the morning-after hangover wallow, "You Don't Love Me," which stings deeply with the self-medicating line, "you can't see how I matter in this world." The hurt persists in "I Wanted to Tell You," but the upbeat tempo and strident vocal find the anger seemingly dissipated. Robert Quine adds another terrific solo and the mix of acoustic guitar and overdubbed harmony vocals provide a hint of sunshine through the clouds.
Sweet's need to analyze what went wrong continues in "Don't Go," suggesting he hasn't fully moved on, and trying his ex-lover's patience. The lullaby "Your Sweet Voice" finds the singer finally at rest, but with "Does She Talk?" he's back on the prowl, possibly warning someone involved with his ex ("Gonna need you a key to open the door to her heart / Or are you afraid her body is missing that part?"). The original album closes on a somber, existential note, wondering whether there is anyone to actually hear the plea that opened the song cycle and smoothly segueing back to track 1.
Volcano's fifteenth anniversary 2-CD reissue of this title fleshes out the original in two dimensions. Disc one is augmented with a trio of songs ("Good Friend," "Superdeformed" and "Teenage Female") that had been attached to various import album and CD single issues. All are good, but almost superfluous given the strength of the original album. The real treat is disc two, which reissues the contemporaneous promo-only "Good Friend" CD. The thirteen tracks include acoustic demos, live versions and a pair of covers (Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," with the Indigo Girls, and John Lennon's "Isoloation").
The demo of "Divine Intervention," stripped of the searing electric guitars of the album turns the song into a Richie Havens-styled plea, highlighted by the acoustic lead playing of Ivan Julian. The live acoustic rendition of "Thought I Knew You" is sung with a fresh sense-memory of the song's origin, and "You Don't Love Me" and "Winona," both shorn of Greg Leisz pedal steel, are more emotionally spent and less country than the album takes. The bonus disc's highlight is an early recording of "Someone to Pull the Trigger" with an end-of-the-rope vocal and ragged production that bests the finished version on Sweet's later "Altered Beast" CD.
The original album's production is flawless and clear, balancing Sweet's vocals perfectly against the onslaught of drums, bass and guitar. The bonus disc sounds like the variety of sources from which it was constructed, with tightly recorded acoustic demos back-to-back with live outings. Disc two serves as a commentary on the original artifact, exposing some roots and offering interpretations. For those who've memorized every nuance of the original LP, "Good Friend" shines a new light on a beloved friend.
(A Classic Made Better) 『Since it's release in 1991, this has been one of my absolute, favorite cd's. The title track alone is one of the great rock and roll songs of all times, but really, there isn't a weak track anywhere. And with the addition of the "Good Friends" cd, it becomes essential.
But why should you buy it? Glad you asked. The guitar work from Richard Lloyd and Robert Quine is outstanding by any standard. The sound is so nice and clean that you can pick out 5 or 6 guitar lines on almost every song. The vocals are top notch, and just the tight playing of all the musicians is amazing. The songs themselves are so good that even when they're stripped down, as they are on the "Goodfriends" tracks, they all still stand up. It really is an amazing work, and a true must buy. Sweet's albums since this one have been a bit uneven, with a few solid tracks and filler. But this one is one of the few cd's that I'll play from beginning to end, including all the bonus tracks, which I had hunted down on my own over the years.
Buy it, you'll like it.』
(A Classic Album Just Got Better) 『Matthew Sweet's 1991 power pop masterpiece just got better with this two-disc 15th anniverasry reissue. In addition to three bonus tracks taken from the Japanese edition of GIRLFRIEND ("Good Friend," "Superdeformed" and "Teenage Female"), there is a second disc entitled GOODFRIEND, that was initially made available only to a handful of retail, radio and record label insiders. This collection of home demos and live tracks is now available commercially for the first time. This bonus disc alone is worth the purchase price.
GOODFRIEND features nine of the fifteen tracks on the original release, including two live renditions of "Girlfriend," one from a BBC 1 broadcast and the other from a Cleveland show. Also included are two covers: a live version of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" and a demo version of John Lennon's "Isolation." The real revelations are the acoustic demos. On these tracks the songs are stripped to their essence. "Divine Intervention" becomes a beautifully melodic song of hope and uncertainty. Without Greg Liesz's pedal steel, Winona" loses its country feel but not its poignancy. And "Looking at the Sun" has a haunting beauty in this stark arrangement. [All the live tracks and demos were recorded after the release of GIRLFRIEND between March and September of 1992.]
I first purchased GIRLFRIEND on cassette when it was released in 1991, and then again a few years later to upgrade to CD. But this Deluxe Edition justifies purchasing it again. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED』
(Sweet, Matthew...........) 『I just LOVE this cd! Basically, the songs are about love lost, love found, and love is hard-pretty universal topics for a pop album. What makes this one stand out is the music-if you love the Beatles as much as James Taylor, or The Kinks as much as Paul Simon, this is a cd for you. There's lots of loud guitars, including pedal steel on a few of the songs, and Matthew has a very good voice for singing pop songs. Then you get to the bonus disc called "Good Friend" which has live and demo versions of the same songs, along with a few choice covers. The whole thing has been remastered and the sound is crystal clear. I know the original came out in 1991, and I somehow missed it all these years--the first time I heard it I thought it sounded a little like Pernice Brothers on steriods, which is a good thing. Bottom line, if you like melodic pop music and high octane guitar rock, this is for you. Highly Recommended!』 『After being dropped from A&M Records thanks toGirlfriend's rough edges, Matthew Sweet might hardly have expected great commercial success when another label brought the album out toward the end of 1991. But an alternative-welcome climate at rock radio stations, along with undeniably great songs and aggressive lead-guitar work by ex-Voidoid Robert Quine and former Television member Richard Lloyd, made the disc an eventual gold-selling hit. Years later,Girlfriend's probe of romance found, lost, and found again continues to sound fresh and daring.--Rickey Wright』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (AWESOME SOUNDTRACK) 『PATSY CLINE AT HER "UPDATED" BEST. I HEARTILY ADVISE GETTING THIS TIMELESS CD OF HER GREATEST HITS. BELIEVE ME, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.』
(Purists may hate me, but...) 『these songs sound terrific remixed! Who better to do the remixing then Owen Bradley, who produced the original tracks. There are those who bemoan that the songs have been remixed, but the original versions are available in pristine form elsewhere. These are slight variations on the originals, and the result is a freshening up of the terrific performances. If you love Patsy Cline's music, you'll love this disc!』
(worth listening) 『though this is an old record, but it is still worth listening, esp the title " Crazy" now seems become popular again.』
(Why change the background?) 『The soundtrack is great, because of Patsy's voice. I don't understand why they had to change the background for the movie- All they had to do was use the original 4-Star material that Patsy recorded. Maybe they weren't able to do so, due to copywrights and such. Whatever the case, even if I like the original backgrounds better, they are an interesting change. My favorite track is "San Antiono Rose." It's always been one of my favorite Patsy songs and it sounds great with an alternate background. I recommend this album to add to your Patsy collection if you are a fan!!』

(Carlo Maria Giulini Delivers the Perfect Verdi Requiem) 『For all the fine performances of the Verdi 'Manzoni Requiem' this 1989 recording with Carlo Maria Giulini conducting the Berlin Philharmonic, the Ernst-Senff-Chorus and the perfect quartet of American soloists - Sharon Sweet, soprano, Florence Quivar, mezzo-soprano, Vinson Cole, tenor, and Simon Estes, bass - is for this listener the finest. Few conductors can match the sense of hallowed greatness of this work that many feel is Verdi's greatest 'opera'. In this performance he captures all the drama, the terror of the final day of judgment, the antiphonal brass effects that come through well in this superb sonic display, and at the same time he is able to offer the most tender moments of the work with a hushed reverence that calls for a unified approach from all of his resources.
To say that the Berlin Philharmonic plays well for him is too obvious; that the chorus rises to the broad spectrum of dynamics with complete commitment is likewise not surprising. What is a revelation here is the manner in which Giulini worked with each of the soloists to mold his uncanny interpretation. Sharon Sweet has the power for the declamatory passages as well as the gentle pianissimos of her exposed solos. Florence Quivar's voice seems to have no breaks at all between the high and low ranges of her demanding role; her voice is pure gold. Vinson Cole may seem an odd choice for a Verdi work, but here he makes the tenor solos and participation in the quartet clarion clear with a voice that never feels strained or less than beautiful. Simon Estes is a true bass who is able to utter the haunting 'Mors stupebit' in a manner that makes all other basses seem superficial in their delivery.
The recorded sound is rich and immediate; perhaps choosing to record the work in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin adds to the sonic splendor that makes the Requiem seem even more credible a work. This is a recording that deserves all prizes it has won and should be part of the library of every music lover. It is definitive! Grady Harp, November 09』
(A Meaningful Verdi Requiem) 『Carlo Maria Giulini was a gentle and spiritual man by reputation. This recording of the Verdi Requiem wih the Berlin Phil from 1989 represents Giulini's devotion to what some call Verdi's best opera, "The Verdi Requiem." In addition to his passionate conducting Giulini has the Berlin Philharmonic, an orchestra that played well for him on several occasions, a first rate chorus and Sharon Sweet, Florence Quivar, Vinson Cole and Simon Estes as solists. Verdi challenges his performers in this work. Especially the soloists, most of all the soprano soloist. The soloists really do a wonderful job here. My most questionable choice on this recording was that of Vinson Cole as the tenor soloist. Having heard him in an art song recital and being very moved, I thought he would be too light for a Verdi's Requiem. I usually think of Jose Carreras, Luciano Pavarotti, Carlo Bergonzi, Placido Domingo or Jussi Bjoerling as ideal for the tenor solo in this work. Vinson Cole has a lighter timbre then those singers, but you forget that when you listen to his musicality. He brings a beautiful cupo color to his singing several time in this performance. In the "Ingemisco" he handles both high b flats with ease. Simon Estes does a fine job as the bass soloist, including a beautiful pianissimo on the word "benedictis" in the bass solo "Confutatis." Florence Quivar sings very beautifully in the "Liber Scriptus" that Verdi sets so skillfully. The soloist who is challenged the most in this work is the soprano. The "Libera me" puts the ball in the sopranos court because it is her, chorus and orchestra. Sharon Sweet, a dramatic soprano does more than live up to the challenge. She sings beautifully and sells this section at the same time. Giulini's coachings with the soloists really paid off because of his sense of colors and word stress. He asks the soloists to sing soft in sections that are often sung forte to great effect. I was very moved by every aspect of this recording. I bought it expecting to love Giulini and the orchestra and have mixed feelings about the soloists and chorus. Luckily the performance proved me wrong.』
(Simply Sublime!) 『This performance of Verdi's Requiem is simply sublime. Giulini gets just right balance between dramatic expression and religious reverence. Singers are all superb and free from operatic exaggeration which mars so many other recordings. Berlin P and the choir creates truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. Most beautifully recorded with wonderful acoustics in Jesus-Christus Kirche.

(Magnificent) 『Why are there four different recordings of Verdi's Missa da Requiem by Carlo Maria Giulini currently listed through Amazon.com? (I counted them. Four!) They are not there because the work is, as we know, well loved. Rather, there has never been a Verdi master in my time so skilled at presenting the Missa at once as the beautiful, powerful, and spiritual communication it is. Giulini dominated many interpretations of Verdi's music during the last half of the 20th century as few could. He was respected for his artistry, the balance between feeling and power in presenting Verdi's music, and because he knew the difference between speed and musical velocity.
Enough praise for the Great One! However, personally I miss him so much. The beauty he brought from everything he touched was a constant sunrise, and he never called attention to himself. He was a baton poet.
This Requiem from Berlin is different from all the others I have heard by Giulini (I have three of his.). It is more beautiful, the sound is better, the soloists (duets, quartets too) sing rapturously, the choir is very good, and the orchestra is so very great. With such masterful direction and this great orchestra's playing, it makes me sorry to say "Ich bin nicht ein Berliner!" I have loved the way the BPO played for Giulini in Mahler's Das Lied, Beethoven's 9th, and now the Verdi Missa da Requiem.
This performance is the recorded swan song for the Missa da Requiem of one of the most luminous Verdi masters to ever touch the ground. Listen to it and you will soar. Get it as fast as you can.
Personally I am always torn between Brahm's German Requiem and Verdi's Missa for my favorite piece of music. Although I love many great compositions, right now my favorite between the two mentioned is Giulini's great performance of Verdi's Missa da Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ernst Senff Choir and many great soloists. It is very rich and, and at my age of 68, I think I shall not hear too many performances more beautiful than this one. Ah, but after having heard it, I say to myself, "This one is enough."

(Not so sweet . . .) 『Set in a town outside Glasgow, this film tells a sometimes heart-stopping and finally heart-rending story of a 15-year-old boy's attempt to create an orderly life out of the chaotic one he's inherited. Committed to raising the 6000 pounds to buy a caravan for his mother, once she gets out of prison, he and a car-thieving friend ramp up their entrepreneurial efforts from flogging contraband cigarettes to punters at the local pub to something that pays more - drug dealing - all of which gets them involved with some thugs who have other plans for them. Ken Loach gives us his usual slice-of-life view of working-class struggles to just make a go of it, this time at a place where the best hope for a paying job is manning the phones at a call center.
Martin Compston as the young Liam is wonderful, and so is his red-headed colleague and partner in crime, Pinball, played by William Ruane. Together they represent a generation abandoned by parents and left to drift in a world without sanctuary. While the arc of the story is from youthful aspirations to crushing disillusionment, Loach says in his director's commentary that we are meant to see the ending as hopeful. Liam and his sister, who looks after him and her own young son, have the kind of resilience and determination, Loach says, to keep to a road that will lead them eventually to independence from their unpromising beginnings. It's a stretch, but you cling to that hope because you've come to care so much about these very real characters.
The performances in the film are captivating, and the kinetic camera work and editing are appropriate for the range of feelings aroused in its young protagonists, from playfulness to terror, rage, and sorrow. The soundtrack is subdued, and the language is #@%&! Oh, and by the way, turn on the subtitles. It's Glaswegian. You won't understand a word.』
(Sweet Sixteen) 『British director Loach is a master at evoking the hardship of poverty in working-class England, and this hard-hitting drama about a Scottish teen's coming of age is no exception. Loach has an impeccable eye for talented nonactors, too, and Greenock native Compston fits the bill perfectly, portraying a witty and resourceful young drug-runner-in-the-making with convincing confidence. Ruane, as his gawky sidekick, is equally wonderful. Bleakly realistic, yet peppered with humor and a splash of hope, "Sweet Sixteen" is a sympathetic portrait of troubled adolescence.』
(A House Doesn't Make A Home) 『In Ken Loach's stark but richly rewarding "Sweet Sixteen", we follow events leading up to the sixteenth birthday of the resilient but reckless Liam as he tries to prepare a life and a home in anticipation of his incarcerated but soon-to-be-released mother's return.
Liam is portrayed by the perfectly cast Martin Compston, whose emotive face can seem so youthfully vibrant yet at the same time so weathered and world-weary. And apt visage aside, this first-time actor here proves himself to be one of the great young performers emerging in the cinematic world of late - his pitch-perfect portrayal of Liam is right up there with recent starmaking roles turned in by the likes of Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon-Leavitt.
Liam is joined in this film by his best friend and literal partner-in-crime Pinball (who's certainly no wizard, although is perhaps so named because of the way he careeningly drives the "borrowed" vehicles in which he joyrides). Pinball is ably portrayed by William Ruane, another previously unknown local who is also quite a find. Together the two boys try to find ways to survive and thrive amidst an environment in which the odds are greatly stacked against them.
The film is actually shot in Greenock, just down the Clyde river from Glasgow, a town where almost all the jobs have moved elsewhere, leading to few "legitimate" ways to earn money. A place where once-lovely but now dilapidated tower blocks are inhabited in equal measure by junkies and families. As Loach himself states in the appropriately spare commentary track (where long silences abound), it's a location where the visually spectacular scenery "contrasts rather sadly with the quality of life of many of the people who live there."
In "Sweet Sixteen", we find the legendary director's usually strident political overtones to be toned down a tad, his muted message blending in nicely with the drab browns, greys and greens of the bleak and beautiful Glaswegian cityscape. The film shows us, subtly yet firmly, how the most promising and gifted attributes in souls young and old alike can sometimes be squelched and squandered by systemic and structural societal inequities. And though it can be depressing to take in at times, this film is ultimately breathtaking to behold, and the most remarkable thing about Compston's performance is that he portrays Liam so winningly that you actually root for him to be successful in even the most questionable of deeds. All of which makes for a highly recommended viewing experience.』
(Reality check for society) 『Think about this movie and how it applies to real life situations? An abusive family, mother in jail, the kids being in foster homes. All "Liam" wanted was a fresh start for his family once his mother got out of jail without her abusive boyfriend "stan". He had to do law breaking things to get the money to provide his mother with a place to live and as you can tell once she gets out she doesn't appreciate it. This movie is a wake up call to a lot of people out there that think these types of situations only happen in movies. At the end of the movie we see what lengths he goes to to try his best to get his mother back. I will just say the ending is very emotional and is very real for a lot of kids out there with a family like that.』 『Determined to have a normal family life once his mother gets out of prison a scottish teenager from a tough background sets out to raise the money for a home. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Bleak and beautiful...) 『The unthinkable happens, when a school bus encounters a patch of ice on a road outside a town in rural Canada. Most of the residents are affected in some way. It's all about story and the unfolding of it, and within its genre, I consider this movie a classic. I get cranky when people habitually compare movies to books, for one is not the other, and never shall be. But if you appreciate the work of novelist Russell Banks, I think you'd be hard pressed to order up a more pleasing rendering of the novel. With the movie, you essentially breathe the same air, or at least I did. The same intimate sketches are made of the characters involved. Their relationships, their likes and their animosities, and the way each of them consider the unthinkable development in their lives, are just as beautifully and painfully rendered here, given the medium involved.
The story is simple, but not the people who inhabit that world, or the way they relate to each other. The magic is in the telling and the revealing. If I were limited to a dozen examples of film as art, 'The Sweet Hereafter' would likely be among them. Most of the cast are low-profile, but very talented. The glue that binds the story together, is Ian Holm. He turns in a subtle but unforgettable performance as the lawyer, Mitchell Stephens. He arrives in town seeking multiple clients and expecting to make large settlements. He walks into much more than expected, while at the same time bearing the crushing weight of his own personal torment. The residents of this small town are coping with a collective, unthinkable loss. They suffer together in quiet dignity until legal framework forces them to find, and point toward a cause for their suffering. In spite of great tragedy, a ghostly kind of beauty manages to peek through.』
(The Sweet Hereafter of Bogus Film Criticism) 『'The Sweet Hereafter' concerns the tragic effect of a school bus crash on the townspeople in a rural town. Many critics were afraid to judge the film on its own merits and placed it on a pedestal where they declared such a film "off limits" to any kind of real criticism. Unconsciously the subject matter affected their judgments. Here was a film about a very delicate subject--the death of innocent children. The characters in the film (parents of the deceased children) were all shattered. It was as if criticizing the film was akin to criticizing these parents as well as any parent who had experienced such a tragic loss. But from the point of view of effective drama, the film is virtually a complete failure. Very little of it rings true at all.
Except for some very nice cinematography and an affecting musical score, 'The Sweet Hereafter' plods along at a snail's pace. The director's intent is to display the range of emotions these parents felt in the aftermath of losing their children. But what is so profound about focusing on such grief? The main character, a negligence lawyer, goes around the town convincing the parents to join in a class action lawsuit against the unspecified person or situation which caused the terrible accident. Most of the parents he sees agree to join the lawsuit (a lot of these scenes with the parents are drawn out and could have been easily condensed). The lawyer finally encounters one man who gives him a hard time. This is perhaps the most dramatic conflict that comes up during the film. But this one towns person's opposition to joining the lawsuit is completely vague. Why is he so against joining the lawsuit? Why is so angry at the lawyer? Because he feels the lawyer is profiting at the expense of the townspeople? Even so, is it really believable that he doesn't want to get to the bottom of what happened as opposed to simply dropping the whole case?
The ending of the film is even more unbelievable. The negligence lawyer never seems to have a definitive plan to try the case. He alludes to various factors that caused the accident, such as a faulty guard rail or a defective bolt inside the bus. A real negligence lawyer would never have taken such a huge case in the first place without feeling that he could be successful. It almost seems like he thinks that he uncover the 'truth' during the discovery process. A real lawyer would have already had some tangible evidence (already uncovered) that would have convinced him to go forward. Furthermore, when the young survivor lies in her deposition, stating that the bus driver was driving too fast, the seemingly smart lawyer folds up like a deck of cards and decides not to cross-examine her. A real lawyer could have made mince-meat of her but he chooses to quit the case and leave all his clients in the lurch. In real life he probably would have been hauled in front of an ethics board.
And why does the young survivor decide to lie in the end? Why does she lie knowing that she is accusing the innocent bus driver? Why does she want to case to 'go away'? Is it that she's so traumatized by the accident that she simply wants to forget about it? Everything is left so open and vague in this film that we never understand any of the characters' motivations.
Lastly, there's a lot of lame talk (mostly over the phone) between the lawyer and his drug-addicted, rebellious daughter. Seemingly there's supposed to be some kind of parallel between the lawyer's personal angst and the angst of the townspeople (this is the lawyer's defense when that one townspeople berates him before the climactic deposition scene). All this conflict between the lawyer and the daughter is gratuitous and simply does not work cinematically. We hardly ever see those two characters together and their conflict is basically a separate story which has no real place in this film.
The Sweet Hereafter basically lacks substance. It congratulates itself for displaying the raw emotion of grief but lacks a central antagonist to engage us. An examination of grief in itself is not enough to sustain an entire story. Whenever conflicts do arise in this film, they are episodic, unclearly motivated and for the most part, lacking the ring of truth. If you're strictly into atmosphere and mood, this is the film for you. But if you're looking for a strong story arc with convincing conflicts, you will not find it in 'The Sweet Hereafter'.

(3 stars out of 4) 『The Bottom Line:
Overpraised in many quarters, The Sweet Hereafter is a well-crafted look into the lives of people who have had their lives racked by tragedy, but its clinical detachment and an unnecessary incest subplot prevent Egoyan's film from achieving greatness.』
(bone chilling drama at its best) 『The Sweet Hereafter is a film you're not likely to forget anytime soon. The movie portrays human beings as they can really be--greedy, confused after a huge tragic loss, in denial of guilt and more. The plot moves along at a good pace and the storyline is absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, this movie is not for everyone since the plot is rather haunting and dark; this is anything but a family film. The actors do a superb job and the cinematography is excellent.
When the action begins, an ambulance chasing lawyer Mitchell Stevens (played by Ian Holm) races up to a small Canadian town after a school bus accident has cost the lives of most of the small town's children. Mitchell approaches the townsfolk to build a huge lawsuit against the people whom he believes he can determine to be guilty for having caused the accident. Perhaps the school bus wasn't regularly maintained--or maybe the manufacturer of the bus used poor quality bolts; Mitchell doesn't care, he just wants a piece of the action.
Of course, some embrace the idea of a lawsuit--but yet others want to forget about any trial and they make no bones about it. In particular, look for Tom McCamus who plays Sam Burnell, a father with a dirty secret and Sarah Polley plays Sam's daughter Nicole. While Sam wants the lawsuit to pay medical bills and probably make a buck off this lemon, his daughter Nicole is not so comfortable with this idea. We come to see that so many of the townsfolk have dark secrets of their own; and even the lawyer Mitchell Stevens has a rather troubled relationship with his daughter Zoë (played wonderfully by Caerthan Banks). There is also the very emotionally scarred bus driver who survived the accident, Dolores Discolt (Gabrielle Rose), who eventually makes it plain that she doesn't want to be judged in a court of law by a jury made up of people who don't know her at all.
As secrets and the rest of the plot unfold, questions arise: Will Dolores change her mind about the lawsuit and want it after all? What about the father of two children who saw the tragedy as he followed the bus in his pickup--will Billy (Bruce Greenwood) ever change his mind and decide a lawsuit is a good idea? And what about Mitchell's own relationship with his daughter Zoë--is there any hope for things to get better between the two of them? Keep an eye out for excellent, practically seamless flashbacks and flash forwards that really impress me with just how smoothly they are woven into the film.
The DVD comes with a plethora of extras: we get an audio commentary by film director Adam Egoyan; and there is a Charlie Rose interview with Egoyan as well. I especially liked the "Q&A" extra with several members of the cast. We even get some biographies and filmographies, too.
All in all, The Sweet Hereafter is an excellent film that I highly recommend. Reserve it for a time when you can handle a heavy film about people and how they can truly be when confronted with a seemingly insurmountable loss. You won't regret watching it. 』
(Hauntingly beautiful!!) 『I saw this movie after I had read about it in a list of 100 daring movies. It truly is, in so many ways. The scene with the school bus is one I will never forget. There are many layers to this movie, and I enjoyed them.』 『In synopsisThe Sweet Hereaftermay sound like a devastatingly unpleasant downer, but don't be discouraged. The real subjects of this luminous picture (adapted by director Atom Egoyan from Russell Banks's novel) are hope and renewal--avoiding the cheap emotions suggested by those clichéd terms. Like other Egoyan films (Exotica, for one), it's an intriguing sort of mystery, a puzzle in which the big picture is not revealed until the very last piece is in place. A metropolitan attorney (Ian Holm) travels to a small British Columbian town where 14 children have been killed in a school bus accident to prepare a class-action suit. With sensitivity and empathy, he approaches relatives with promises that the suit will give focus and closure to their grief. And as he investigates the circumstances of the accident, he not only uncovers a few local secrets, but dredges up some painful pieces of his own past. Slowly, deeper mysteries are revealed--eternal mysteries at the very heart of human nature: Who is to blame for a tragedy like this? And why do people feel such a need to assign blame? Is that how they give meaning to otherwise inconceivable events? How does one reassemble a shattered life? The Sweet Hereafteris too honest to offer bromides, but it shows how a few people struggle, as best they can, to answer these questions for themselves. DVD extras include audio commentary by Egoyan and Banks, a Charlie Rose interview with Egoyan, and a panel discussion with the filmmakers.--Jim Emerson』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review ("I may not know much, but I know about yoyos!") 『This is quite a sweet Australian family movie about a bumbling con artist who turns out to have a heart of gold. Nice assortment of crazy provincials, good performances all around. Karen Allen shines, Bryan Brown seems to be a kind of Austalia's answer to Michael Cane. He has a good voice and a few good lines (see title which has to be understood quite literally and is followed by a stunning performance by Brown with said toy).』
(WONDERFUL, PLEASANT, EASY TO WATCH) 『This is a very enjoyable movie, no sex, no violence. It's a pleasure to see a movie like this.
Bryan Brown is conman Harry Reynolds who travels to a small Australian beach town with plans to scam the residents. However, his plans change when another conman comes to town and Harry becomes involved with a small boy and his mother.
The relationship between the boy and Harry is what makes this movie special.
This movie may be predictable but it is, nontheless, very pleasant to watch. Beautiful scenery and good acting.』
(Thoroughly enjoyable and charming film!) 『I was surprised into watching this film one night a few years ago, and am VERY glad I did! Bryan Brown is as robust and clever as always, and the doe-eyed, strong-minded Karen Allen is a perfect foil/love interest for Brown's"Harold Hill"-esque con-man. In fact, this film is quite like The Music Man in many ways, albeit without the music! Brown's scam-artist intends to milk a small coastal town out of it's hard-earned money, but has a change of plans when Allen and her son find their way into his heart. There's comedy and light drama here, and the entire cast seems well suited to the script and storyline. In all, this is a charming film, and if a little predictability can be endured, it will be sure to satisfy.』
(Very enjoyable, but predictable) 『It was an enjoyable movie to watch, but a bit predictable. I think too, that the ending was a cop-out, (the son finding the"article"on the beach towards the end). More time and thought should have occurred in the writing. If more effort had been exerted in the writing of the story line -- this movie would have been as good as LOCAL HERO (with Peter Reigert and Burt Lancaster). But hey, I can't complain. It's a refreshing flick.』
(Emotional at times, well acted, beautiful Aussie scenery) 『What a very pleasant surprise to be able to sit down with your family, and watch a most surprising video. Bryan Brown is the usual larrikan he can be. Karen Allen, the cute, bubbly girl next door, and Justin Rosniak. what a find he has been. This child will go a long way in a very fickle industry. Whomever may have cast this young boy, certainly receives top honours. He us extremely professional, and a charming little Aussie. I look forward to Justin Rosniaks next movie................Great viewing』

(Cool Water is still a good buy.) 『Cool water is a cologne that is a few years old, but I still elicited good comments everytime I put some on. The bodywash is excellent. It doesn't have an overwhelming scent. That is what made it appealing to me. I never like cologne's that are "heavy" scented. In addition to not being overbearing, it has a very masculine smell. No one will be confused with the scent. It is distinctively not feminine and that is more of a reason to purchase Cool Water. It isn't overpriced. It's affordable. You don't have to be a high ranking bank executive to purchase this product.』

As for quality - I did add a little glue where the sequence came to togethr before I even let my daughter touch it and the crown fell off on Halloween, which my dad hot glue gunned back on - Now it is holding up well. The only assembly needed was to pop on the wheels (no instructions in box, but all you have to do is remove the black covering on the wheel post, push the round silver pin in on the wheel, push wheel onto the post, then let go of pin to hold wheel in place.....very easy...just looking at it, I figured out how to do it). The product dimensions given must be the folded size. I like that the stroller folds like a real baby stroller for storage or travel. The handle bar adjusts by bending (up or down) at the blue knob you see in the photo. The seat easily adjusts to different positions (sitting straight up and then leaning back a couple of positions). There is a zippered compartment on the hanging fabric in the back. We currently have one of those fold-up umbrella-type doll strollers and there is no comparison. This is probably twice the size and much better quality. Even though my daughter hasn't played with it yet, I'm sure it will hold up very well. Frame and wheels seem very durable and fabric is good quality too. Although the stroller doesn't come with instructions, assembly is simple: remove the plastic protective coverings from the wheel bars and snap the wheels into place, then unfold the stroller to snap it into the open position. I was surprised and pleased by the skill in which Ms. Deveraux brought the criminal element into the novel. This book will not please the typical Deveraux romance reader but, if you're into the history of jazz and the speakeasies of the time, crime and mystery, this is a very entertaining read.』
(Favorite Read for Jude's Fans) 『SWEET LIAR is a favorite of Deveraux fans. Samantha Elliot travels to New York from her Louisville home to locate a trace of a grandmother who'd disappeared when Sam was a baby. Her landlord, Michael Taggert becomes the love of her life and he helps her untangle a life that went wrong on a bloody night in 1928. The mystery gets lost, but the story flows for a rapid read. Nash Black, a Kentucky author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and HAINTS.』
(Jude Deveraux at her best!) 『Sweet Liar would have to be #5 on my list wittily dubbed as my "Top Ten Favorite Jude Deveraux Books" (after the Velvet series, of course). The reason why I love this book so much? The hero, Michael Taggert.
Following the death of her father, divorcee Samantha Elliot travels to New York City to fulfill an odd condition of his will: she has to live in the city for a year and see what she can find out about her grandmother, who disappeared immediately after the murder of Samantha's mother when Sam was very young. To help - or compel - her, her dad has sold their house out from under her and taken a twelve-month lease on an apartment in Manhattan, so Samantha really has no choice but to obey her father's wishes. She arrives at the apartment and meets (in a very unorthodox fashion) her landlord, the oh-so-attractive, oh-so-charming, oh-so-wealthy Michael Taggert.
Jude Deveraux definitely delivered some terrific one-line zingers (such as the old lady who wonders why a young woman would blush at her mention of making love: "Why is it every generation thinks it invented sex?").
Next to Jamie Fraser (of Diane Gabaldon's Outlander), Mike Taggert has to be one of my favorite romance heroes. The man is pure fantasy, and nobody does a fantasy man as well as Jude Deveraux. Physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, Mike is a complete character. And completely appealing, to boot. When he tells Samantha, "I'm Michael Taggert, and I'm a different man," my bones just melt.
What reader could resist a man who drags the woman he loves on an all-day shopping and makeover marathon at Saks Fifth Avenue, who insists on spending oodles of money on her, who worries about her health and spirits even when she's not worried about herself, who helps her discover the truth about her family's shady past, who teaches her to appreciate and celebrate who she is, who breaks down the walls of negativity built up by her ex-husband, and who's drop-dead gorgeous to boot? This guy suffers from a refreshing drop of self-doubt, by the way, and he's never let all his money go to his head. He also loves, loves, loves kids. Here's how Deveraux describes him:
He was the most perfectly formed man she'd [Samantha] ever imagined. He was movie stars, men in underwear commercials, guys at the gym, the construction worker in the red T-shirt who'd whistled at her but she'd pretended she hadn't heard; he was the men in three-piece suits whose brains were as sexy as their bodies; he was lazy, indolent seventeen-year-old boys whose muscles bulged out of their clothes, rodeo stars, and those smooth-cheeked, eyeglassed men who held their children tenderly. He was all of them.
I'll take one of each, please.』
(Boring....boring....yawn) 『Gosh - this book was so boring that I skipped a good two hundred pages and still understood what happened. Firstly, let me list the common factors in all of JD's books:
1. A heroine who is beautiful but likes hiding her looks for some stupid contrived reason (Legend, Sweet Liar, A Knight in Shining Armor). 2. She also suffers from low self-esteem and comes up with stupid reasons to look down on herself...all resulting in men treating her like s**t. 3. A story that involves either time-travel or hynotism, bringing her into the past.
Yet, while I did somehow manage to finish Legend and A Knight in Shining Armor, I read about 200 pages of Sweet Liar, skipped the next 150 pages in disgust and just read the ending. And you know what! I didn't miss anything, it seemed.
The only JD book that I liked was Remembrance, but only when Talis&Callie make an appearance. I wish I could've skipped the first 60 pages but I might not have understood what was going on then... Skip Sweet Liar; it's boring...』
(Wonderful Service and a great book.) 『I have most of this author's books and this book made me want to order the rest. I got my book accurately, the condition is new and the customer service was great. I would recommend this seller and author to anyone. Great service』 『
It was her father's dying wish that Samantha Elliot search for her grandmother, who'd disappeared from Louisville when she was a baby. So here she was, in big, dirty New York City...her parents were dead, her divorce was final, and she was all alone....
Michael Taggert was Samantha's landlord, and he was easily the most beautiful man she'd ever seen. He was charming, too -- his zest for life was so contagious that in his presence Sam bloomed like a flower after the rain. Yet Mike could only get so far with her -- when he tried to get closer, it was like running into a brick wall.
But Mike wouldn't give up. As they probed her grandmother's past, he was slowly uncovering the joy and affection Samantha had buried long ago -- and leading them closer to the dangerous truth about a bloody spring night in 1928, and a seductive blues singer named Maxie....』

(Run, do not walk, to this book.) 『One of the most important books of poetry to ever cross my path. I return to this constantly. Earnest, real, vivid -- none of these words suffice to how incredible this book is. Get on it.』
(I am grateful to have read this - so beautiful) 『I have read this aloud over the phone to friends thousands of miles away. I've read it aloud at dinner parties. I've purchased it for friends. This is a remarkable collection of poems, a treasure. I don't want to sound so precious about it, but I can't help it. I found Hoagland's writing when I was 20, and I'm sure I'll still be coming back to the same poems when I'm an old lady. Amazing!』
("And capable of saying anything") 『From the beginning of poetry, from the beginnings of Greek and Roman poems, poetry has striven to be both dulce et utile---pleasant and useful. Tony Hoagland is a poet who captures both of those aspects of poetry, and effortlessly so. Not a single word goes to waste, as he describes situations familiar to almost any audience, while making them sound extraordinary and worth reading about. The wishes of mankind are encapsulated in this poetry: "I should walk up the stairs right now/ and make slow love to the woman I live with." These are poems which are provoking and well-thought out, to the point of being accessible: "It wasn't easy, inventing the wheel..." Reading Hoagland's poetry, a sense of life is gained, while in his poetry, life moves on: observed, undisturbed, and intact for the next reader.』 『Tony Hoagland captures the recognizably American landscape of a man of his generation: sex, friendship, rock and roll, cars, high optimism, and disillusion. With what Robert Pinsky has calledâthe saving vulgarity of American poetry,â Hoaglandâs small biographies of destruction reveal that defeat is a natural prelude to grace and loss a kind of threshold to freedom.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Love these t-shirts!) 『I love these t-shirts! They fit well, and hold up over time even though the fabric is soft. They wash and dry without fading. Very classic styles, can wear with jeans or with something a little dressier. I was given a 3 Dot T-shirt 6 years ago, still have it and it still looks new. Have purchased several in other colors and styles. It's a staple in my wardrobe...』 『Three Dots Style ST2C-035. Body-conscious crew neck tee. 100% combed cotton. Finely ribbed knit.
