Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (surprised, frustrated and disappointed) 『I ordered two different copper cookie cutters from this company at the same time. They both arrived in the same box, one in excellent condition, the other (the fleur di lis) is badly tarnished and looks water damaged. To pay $10 for a cookie cutter and have it be so damaged and unusable is frustrating. You didn't even look at it before you packed and sent it, tho it was stamped as "inspected by". Get some glasses!!!!
It may be just a cookie cutter. But I'm a nurse. Our famiy and friends get together every year over the holidays and make hundreds of cookies and take them in to the busiest Hospital Emergency Department in the city on Christmas Day so staff, firemen, paramedics and policeman know someone is thinking of them and appreciates what they do for others. It's a tradition we have done for over 20 years and they start asking months in advance about them! They love them!!
Every year I try to buy a couple of unique cookie cutters to add to our collection. They love all the unusual-shaped cookies we have baked. We wanted to make your company a part of that tradition, but we have high standards and you don't qualify. That this company would send an already visually damaged product and hope the consumer just will accept it tells how little they value the customer. This is the first and LAST time I will do business with this company. Maybe if you lose enough customers, you will start listening to us. Shame on you for wasting my time and taking my $$!!』

She's one of the few perfect spintos that comes along once in a while. Placido is great, as always; very at home in the Verdi repertoire. Chernov and Plishka add to the UH-mazingness of voices. My only problem is the set/production...it's just not my favorite and I got bored with it.』
(Stunning Verdi) 『This 1993 production on DVD introduced me to the greatness that is Stiffelio, now numbered among my most favorite operas. Its tunes can be as irresistible as any but this is a piece of dramatic theater in the line of Otello. And here we have that masterful Otello, Domingo, giving us a searing portrayal of Stiffelio. Devoted to his wife, he is soon torn by doubts, then faced with the undeniable reality of her adultery. Watching him try to cope with this unalterable fact is heartbreaking, frightening. Domingo perfectly embodies the disbelief, anguish and rage. Your typical Italian character would now feel quite justified in dispatching one or more people in revenge. But no! Stiffelio, the minister, must teach Stiffelio, the man, to find forgiveness in his heart (did Otello ever countenance such a thought!). A heart that, though wounded, still loves dearly. He learns a meekness that is most touching. These latter scenes touch rare emotional depths and it is almost unbearable to witness the broken couple's struggle through the aftermath. But in the end forgiveness does rise above the tragedy. An unusual, beautiful, powerful opera.
The production, sets and filming all serve the opera perfectly. This is one the most striking DVDs I have seen. The atmosphere is sober and traditional yet there is warmth and gaiety. Décor somewhat severe yet shot through with light. Regular and orderly but comfortable, even rich. Each set is simply stunning in its beauty and appropriateness.
This is a great performance, the sum rising to be even greater than its parts. Those parts themselves being great assets- Domingo, Levine, sets, everything just right... But Chernov as Stankar almost steals the show. Straight and rigid in his German uniform (with Iron Cross) he is the picture of soldierly pride. Stern, honorable and unyielding yet his pride finds a match in his tender love of his daughter (ah! this is what Verdi does best, no?). Chernov is most convincing in this lovely role of conflicting emotions. What colors he finds in his arias and duets with his wayward daughter! He was having a splendid evening- he knew it, the audience knew it and responded uproariously, and I feel it every time I watch. Bravo!
The highest praise is also due to DG for their usual excellent presentation of these operas at the Met. Convenient menu; subtitles in Italian (some companies give any language but the original!) English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese; beautiful packaging including a very nice booklet with titles, synopsis, notes on this performance and several photos (I especially prize the full-page one of Domingo kneeling on the leaf-strewn stage in Act 2- just when he comes to grips with the truth about his wife and is about to pick up a sword to exact vengeance...) 』
(FURST RATE PRODUCTION) 『I have nothing to add to the extensive main review but wish only to join with the second in expressing my own novice's enthusiastic response to this production. Whether or not this is considered major or minor Verdi, the Met proved that it is an opera that can stir deeper emotions and speak to the complexities of human responses. As pointed out by the others, Domingo, Sweet and Chernov, in the lead roles, were simply outstanding both in song and action, the supporting cast did all that could be asked of them, Levine and the Met orchestra demonstrated the success of the conductor's effort to make it among the best in the world, the video production was excellent. A word should be said with regard to scenic design in this day of minimalism: the traditional approach here, measurably enhanced the power of the production as, it should be mentioned, did the costuming. All in all, a very classy addition to the collections of opera on DVD.』
(Stiffelio review) 『I invited friends over to watch Stiffelio. It was a grand experience. The singing voices were wonderful and the staging was great. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when the opera ended. Very, Very moving and I would recommend this production to any opera lover.』
(I was overwhelmed) 『Stiffelio is a GREAT opera. Lost for close to a century, it has been slow in making its way into the standard repertoire, but productions such as this one should further its cause as well as its reputation. This is frankly one of the best opera productions I've ever seen. Every facet is top of the line, from the orchestra to the singers to the stage production to the video direction. Prepare to be overwhelmed. And, if you've never seen or heard Stiffelio before, prepare to welcome a new opera into the canon of Verdi masterpieces.
Stiffelio, about a Protestant minister who learns that his wife has cheated on him while he was away, has a story that is closer to verismo opera than most of the other operas of that time in that it deals with regular people rather than kings and queens, gods and goddesses. Like verismo, the emotion is often pushed to a level that is melodramatic, even larger than life. Yet even those moments have the core of truth to them, because Stiffelio's characters are never less, or more, than human, defined as they are by human weakness. This is a very powerful opera, Bergmanesque(as in Ingmar) in that it deals with the conflict between the spiritual life and the earthly one. This juxtaposition is never more beautifully realized than at the end of act two, where Stiffelio has just learned of his wife's indiscretion and is prepared to kill her but is stayed by the voices of the congregation emanating from the church, singing about forgiveness. I was overpowered, and I'm not even a religious person! Then again, neither was Verdi, yet the great humanist was able to put aside his anticlericalism and create an astonishing vision of a man finding redemption through faith. This has always been a Verdian specialty, scenes where private agonies clash with public responsibilities. Probably the greatest example comes late in act three of Otello, where Otello has just finished spying on Iago and Cassio and is tormented with jealousy and thoughts of violence just as the horns signal the approach of the heralds. Trust me when I say that the scene I just described from Stiffelio is in that same league.
The music of this opera, which was written between Luisa Miller and Rigoletto, shows the composer's progress. There is very little standard recitative, it's almost all through composed, with fewer arias and more concerted music than the norm, creating an undeviating dramatic flow. Many scenes show the richness in orchestration that would characterize his later operas. Also, this is one of the few Verdi operas where the tenor character is the most demanding role. The uniqueness of Stiffelio might tempt some to write it off as a curiosity, yet the power of the story and the passion of the music demand that it be taken seriously as one of Verdi's most beautifully realized triumphs.
"Taken seriously" certainly applies to this production. The commitment of all involved is palpable. James Levine's orchestra plays with an extraordinary Verdian fervor and flair, yet is never less than subtle in the more pensive, nuanced moments. This lesser known score couldn't be in more capable hands. Under Levine, Stiffelio becomes an emotional powerhouse, it sounds like an opera that belongs in the same class as the more oft performed Verdi masterworks of that period. On to the singers. Placido Domingo gives a performance of Otelloesque intensity. Here is a singer who cares more about dramatic authenticity than strict vocal beauty, and his voice, while lovely, is also savage and tumultuous, just like his acting. Domingo has always excelled in the more angst-ridden roles, Don Jose, Cannio, Otello, the difference here being that Stiffelio offers an opportunity to explore the dawning of wisdom as well, and redemption, and Domingo accepts the challenge. I wasn't familiar with Sharon Sweet, our Lina, prior to watching this. I understand her career at the Met was shortlived. Still, it's easy to see why she demanded so much enthusiasm during her brief period in the spotlight, her singing is explosive yet also beautiful and, dare I say it, sweet. She is also a compelling dramatic actress, her wayward, fatalistic wife, the catalyst for this tragedy, is never less than a sympathetic character. Vladimir Chernov matches the tenor and soprano's intensity as Stankar, Lina's father, the tragic counterpart to Stiffelio, his foil if you will, who yields to the same impulse to violence that initially drives Stiffelio, unlike Stiffelio he only yields to the power of forgiveness after sating his need for bloodshed. Paul Plishka has a smaller role as Jorg, but no less important, since he functions as Stiffelio's conscience, his voice of reason. His stoic compassion is mesmerizing. Regarding Giancarlo del Monaco's production, this is an advertisement for tradtional productions when they are done well. The dark, brooding sets, while effective at setting the mood of the piece, are also light on abstraction, on symbols, they allow the singers and the music to impart the opera's profundity. The settings are elaborate and in their own way as essential to the performance's success as the singers and orchestra. Brian Large's video direction is as polished and cinematic and as unintrusive as ever, using closeups during moments of extreme emotional distress but also pulling back his camera when necessary to allow the viewer to take it all in. I've never seen a Met broadcast look better.
One final note. I persist in objecting to this opera's overture. I don't approve of cuts in most instances, particularly in operas that are under two hours, but if I were ever to consider making a cut to any score, this overture would have to be one of the first I would consider. For one thing, Stiffelio is a short, intimate opera, close to a chamber piece in some respects, so a ten minute overture seems inappropriate. Second, although the overture does use motifs from the actual score, the texture and pacing of the piece are too jaunty and therefore a poor match for the subject matter and mood of the opera itself. It sounds more like something Donizetti would have written for one of his lighter operas, it has a standard bel canto feel to it whereas Stiffelio is one of those operas that does its best to break free of bel canto conventions. Basically, Stiffelio's overture is unworthy of the man who just prior to that wrote the brilliant prelude to Luisa Miller and the stirring overture to La Battaglia di Legnano. More than that, it is unworthy of the opera. Despite all that, Levine and his orchestra give a spirited reading. I'm certainly not about to allow a weak overture spoil what is otherwise a beautiful opera and a magnificent production and an overwhelming viewing experience. Nor should you.』 『No Description Available. Genre:Music Videos - Classical Rating:NR Release Date:10-JUL-2007 Media Type:DVD』

A fine performance by Burt Lancaster as a grizzled veteran with troops Craig Wasson and Marc Singer. Set in the early years of the war, it is a warning what awaits in the jungles and rice paddies. Directed by Ted Post (MAGNUM FORCE), a great addition to any collection.』
(An over-looked Vietnam war classic film) 『Released in the same year as other Vietnam films such as "Coming Home" and "The Deer Hunter", this fine low-budget film was ignored by the Academy in favor of the other two yet it boasts one of Burt Lancaster best latter day performances and the other two leads, Craig Wasson and Marc Singer, are also excellent as well. In fact Lancaster was so fond of the brilliant script/story that he donated $150,000 out of his pocket to complete the film. In print, Lancaster stated that he considered "Airport" a pile of crap but he was paid so well for it that he could afford to play a role such as Maj Asa Baker, a war weary veteran of previous wars. Along with his other great roles such as "Atlantic City" and "The Leopard", this one ranks as one of his best and the direction by Ted Post (Hang Em High;Magnum Force) is focused and efficient. (WE WERE SOLDIERS;IN THE SPIRIT OF SPARTANS:Corpus Christi, TX) 『This is one excellent movie. Brings back alot of memories. It is believable because that's how it was in the early years of the war. And sad to say, for the duration. But we were picking up the mantle from the Greatest Generation, as they did from those who fought in the Great War. And let's not forget Korea. Forget all the one star reviewers! They don't know dung! Personally, I did my part in fighting for America. Protecting our freedom! That's how I saw it. I think about my friend Jose Torres who was the first one killed in'65 from our little town of Sinton. I enlisted in'67 with about six close friends. One of my closest friends Edward Gonzalez was also KIA. We grew up together, as altar boys, Boy Scouts, etc. The memories are still there, and I cherish them. This is the only movie, other than "WE Were Soldiers", about VietNam, that is in my collection! I was with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Shore Party Battalion from Dec '67 thru Jun "69. Oooorah! PS: Good title for a movie. Go Tell The Spartans*****』
(Vietnam; The Early Days) 『GO TELL THE SPARTANS is a film that makes clear much of the thought and rationale for our involvement in Vietnam. Lean, stripped down, almost documentary in structure and form it tells the story of early advisers and a small bloody battle that was an indicator for what was to come. Burt Lancaster and Marc Singer deliver first rate performances and the small cast of mainly unknown and character actors only lend to the realism. A must have film for anyone interested in the history of the Vietnam War and in gaining a clearer perspective of our entanglements there.』 『Burt Lancaster delivers one of the finest performances of his career as a hard-boiled major in command of a Vietnam outpost. A classic of wartime confrontation.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Love It! Middle Age Female Comeback) 『I love this movie, as most of Debbie Reynolds high energy comedies, this one is no disappointment. It's the story of middle aged revival..at a time when many women (and men) direly feel and equally dread the loss of their strength, vitality and sexuality, this hysterical farce pulls all those elements together while reinforcing the strength of a quality marital love without sacrificing good parenting in the process.
Debbie Reynolds is feminine dynamite as she wows the French with her sizzling middle age figure and reminds her hubby that good things, do, indeed come in small packages! James Garner perfectly addresses the sterotypical oblivious middle aged husband who cannot see his wife through the trees...that is, until all is unveiled before a more appreciative audience. Charming comedy, great glimpse of the 60's and just plain old fun.』
(How Sweet it is) 『From the groovy credits done in sixties pop-art style to the freak-out ending, this is a film that captures the era right on!"Alone time"for Grif and Jenny Henderson (James Garner, Debbie Reynolds) has been almost impossible for this married couple, what with Grif's job as a photographer having him traveling for photo shoots and raising a teenage son in a time of revolution. There must be some way for the Hendersons to spend some time together. When their son Davey asks to go on vacation to Europe, alone with some other classmates, well of course that's out of the question. . . right? That is unless Jenny can come up with a clever plan so that the whole family can go and make this a much-needed family vacation. And what a vacation this turns out to be! Theft, adultery, imprisonment, divorce! These are but some of the things this movie has in store for you, along with some genuinely funny mishaps that you won't want to miss.』
(Great one-liners in this comedy) 『James Garner delivers his typically quick and funny one-liners in this comedy movie made during the flower child era. I especially laughed when he was talking about his son with Debbie Reynolds. When she asked why he didn't do things with him anymore, Garner sneered said"we used to build model airplanes together. Now all he wants to do is sniff the glue."
Another time, Garner was in a French restaurant and he told the waiter that he didn't even like French bread.
I recommend this movie, especially at this price. No violence, just good clean fun, 1968 style.』

Despite this I agree with most of the critical comments about portions of the film.
Unfortunately it was assembled as a 145 minute "roadshow" musical; these were overlong spectaculars which depended less on the charm of the performers (think 1930's) than on pre-sold event marketing (unnecessary, pretentious, overscale, and distracting production values; souvenir programs; etc.). Right around the time of its release these mega-productions were leading many of the studios to financial ruin. Warner Brothers took a hit from this one; box office was bad but fortunately Coppola worked cheap and had cranked this out on the back-lot with a relatively modest budget.
Trim about 30 minutes from the film and you would have a much better production. There is a lot of stuff here that is supposed to be fun and just doesn't make it. Fortunately there are some real gems sandwiched throughout the film.
Think bi-racial "Lil Abner" (1959) with a touch of "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). The Oz connection comes from lyricist E. Y. Harburg, the guy who gave us "If I Were the King of the Forest". There are enough such silly songs to make up for toughing out the musical clunker moments. Tommy Steele absolutely shines doing this material (insert Bert Lahr here) .
Nothing wrong with the performances of Fred Astaire or Petula Clark either. And its not just his dancing and her singing, they both achieve excellent characterizations. Astaire at 70 does not look much different facially than Astaire at 30. But this time instead of a physically unlikely love interest he plays a warm old man still chasing a dream, and it's a much better fit. Clark does an excellent Debbie Reynolds and more than holds her own through the production.
Unfortunately there is little good to say about the casting of Don Francks as Petula's love interest and Hancock's older brother. Most likely Coppola felt that the film needed a relatively hip looking guy in place of a Gordon MacRae type. But Francks comes off as more of an oily hotshot; the kind of guy who would proposition your 14 year-old sister.
The plot has Finian and his daughter coming to Kentucky to bury a crock of gold he has stolen from a leprechaun back in Ireland. Finian believes that he can produce some kind of synergy by getting the gold within close range of Ft. Knox. They end up in a racially mixed Dogpatch named Rainbow Valley, where blacks and whites work side-by-side as tobacco sharecroppers. There is considerable intrigue involving the local racist political hacks, a new stain of mentholated tobacco being developed by a George Washington Carver type (Al Freeman Jr., back taxes on the sharecropping collective, romance, and a leprechaun who is slowly becoming human.
Barbara Hancock, a young but quite accomplished ballet dancer, is fetching as Susan the Silent (who dancers instead of talking). Coppola adds a lot of nice lyrical moments by showcasing her dancing. It is said that Astaire resented her being cast instead of an older dancer he recommended. They are not paired in any number, a failure conspicuous by its absence.
The widescreen DVD looks great and the Coppola commentary is surprisingly interesting.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child. 』
(Not As Good As It Could Have Been...But At Least We Have It!) 『The major flaw in this film is that Coppola couldn't decide the style. (It was, after all, his first film...or nearly so.) Much of it is filmed outdoors, but many scenes were done in a studio, and the visual difference between the two is as jarring as "Old Devil Moon" is with the rest of the score, much the way "What I Did for Love" stands apart, stylistically, from the rest of the score of A CHORUS LINE. Both songs were obviously intended to be "the hit song" from the score.
Tommy Steele's acting is over the top, obviously directed to be such. He is, after all, a leprechaun, and there are no role models to emulate. I doubt if David Wayne in the Broadway original was quite so skittish. Petula Clark is surprisingly good; Don Franks is somewhat less so. Fred Astaire is Fred Astaire, looking shockingly old...but then again, he was! It almost makes you feel uneasy, watching him dance at that age...especially the scene in the tobacco barn, where he's up and down a stack of packing crates. A man that old shouldn't be made to do that sort of thing!
In all, though, it's quite enjoyable, if a little heavier-handed with the racial thing than it needed to be. And it was, after all, Fred's final musical appearance in a film. We have that to be thankful for!』
(Doomed to obscurity) 『Having recently seen a stage production of Finian's Rainbow on boradway, I have a new appreciation for the film. As a film adaptation, it is quite well-made (and perhaps superior) to the original. Astaire's performance is incredibly subtle but nonetheless lends a lot more depth to the character of Finian, who was originally an Irish caricature and little else. It's all in the line readings: Astaire was as good an actor as he was a dancer, and his comic timing is flawless. Even in his sixties, the man is a machine.
Coppola's version continues to have a vile reputation, one I assume will probably never change. I'll list off the reasons for this:
1) - An extremely negative portrayal of the deep south. The "good guys" live in a filthy shantytown, while the evil Senator Rawkins resides in a nightmarish, antiquated mansion which is surrounded by a jungle. I half expected Colonel Kurtz to emerge from it. Obviously, Rawkins' environment is meant to exaggerate his backwards thinking, but you can see how all of this would offend southerners. The Rawkins estate in no way resembles an real-life antebellum house. Coppola clearly has no affection for the south, nor does the original script.
2) - Fred Astaire doesn't dance. Much is made of Finain's Rainbow being the last coffin nail in Astaire's career. I beg to differ; it's probably his second-greatest acting role (with Easter Parade being his first). You really have to see it to appreciate it; I can't accurately describe what I mean.
3) - The movie is "Marxist". Well, I'm afraid this film isn't going to change anyone's ideology or ideas abut capitalism. In reality, though, the plot has little to do with economics and more about poking fun at bigots.
However, none of these reasons merit overlooking the excellent musical score. Each song is beautiful and memorable -- which is more than you can say for a lot of musical comedies.
The entire cast is great, even the irritating Tommy Steele, whose over-caffeinated mugging is well-suited for a Leprechaun, though not so good in other roles. The movie ended up chopping away a few songs, most notably "Necessity". To be perfectly honest, these edits probably benefited the film; The stage version tends to replay its songs too often.』
(Finian's Rainbow) 『In my opinion, this is not a well-crafted story or a movie worth watching, unless you really like a certain actor or actress or really want to see Fred Astaire dance in his last role. I thought it would be interesting because Tommy Steele was so great in Disney's musical The Happiest Millionaire and because Keenan Wynn can be very funny, but in this movie, Tommy Steele acts more like he is on a drug high, and the songs in this had less to do with the plot than in most musicals. For example, there's a lot of good dancing and there are some good tunes, but when everyone's spending the day running through the fields, and it has so little to do with the plot, you have to wonder what the point or current plot is. The point at that particular part seems to be that everyone's happier in communal living, and the rest of the movie clarifies that communal living is specifically Marxist. The messages of the movie are Marxist, and the writers of the musical also managed to put in a bit about witches overcoming discrimination, a big deal to the feminists of the 60s. The Marxist message is more blatant than some of the reviewers here suggested, portraying Fred Astaire's character as greedy for wanting to keep his money and calling the rightful owner, the leprechaun (Tommy Steele), a member of a "subversive underground group" for wanting it. The writers of the musical were Marxists or socialists who were portraying capitalists as selfish, accusatory hatemongers. One last thing: I felt that the movie's subplots weren't very well connected to each other until the end of the movie, and that the cuts in the movie were done in a very psychedelic, disjointed fashion, reflecting the hippie era that director Coppola apparently embraced. All of these things were negative aspects to me.』
(Finian's Rainbow) 『I'm in love with MUSICALS. I've always liked Fred Astaire (and Petula Clark has such a haunting voice, I could listen to her for hours). Tommy Steele does a very credible job as the leprechaun (I remember him from The Happiest Millionaire). As for the story, it's standard fare for musicals, but the singing (and dancing), OH MY. That's the hook for me!』 『A funny thing happened toFinian's Rainbowin between its debut as a Broadway musical in 1947 and its appearance as a film in 1968. After 21 years, its theme of racial tension in the American South was no longer cutting edge, and the fact that its heroes are a group of sharecroppers called the Rainbow Valley Tobacco Cooperative dates it even further. Add a number of subplots and the heavy hand of a 29-year-old Francis Ford Coppola directing his first and only musical, and the two-and-a-half-hour running time feels bloated. Hermes Pan (best known for the classic Astaire-Rogers movies) is credited with choreographing the overbusy musical numbers, but he was reportedly overruled by Coppola at every turn. Still, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie, most notably Fred Astaire in his last lead role in a musical. Fred plays Finian McLonergan, an Irishman who has traveled to America in hopes of planting a pilfered pot of gold near Fort Knox and watching it grow. Even at 69, Fred shows he is still capable of a sprightly step and warbling "Look to the Rainbow." Another plus is the casting of '60s pop icon Petula Clark as his daughter, as she sings with an unaffected loveliness. Finally, the score by Burton Lane and E.Y. Harburg includes two of the best Broadway songs ever written--"Old Devil Moon" and "How Are Things in Glocca Morra?"--as well as the comic ditty "When I'm Not Near the Girl I Love."--David Horiuchi』 『A mysterious Irishman, Finian, and his daughter arrive one day in a small Southern town of sharecroppers and plant a stolen crock of leprechaun gold. Season 1 is pretty good but not as funny as seasons 2 and 3. Kelly Bundy played brilliantly by Christina Applegate is more edgier in the first season, she didn't become a bimbo until the later seasons. Katey Sagel is the scene stealer, she owns the set. (Comedy must have) 『I know of no person who isn't amused by the Bundy family. Great addition to the DVD collection』 『WhenMarried... with Childrendebuted on Fox TV on April 5, 1987 (followed byThe Tracey Ullman Showa half-hour later), the grungy sitcom became an instant flagship for Rupert Murdoch's upstart network. The program's much-publicized working title,Not the Cosbys(a dismissive reference to the cheerful vitality of Bill Cosby's hugely popular television clan on NBC'sThe Cosby Show) was a dead giveaway.Married... with Childrenwas going to be a trashier, raunchier, and far more cynical view of the American nuclear family. But it turned out the series actually fell into other caustic-domestic entertainment traditions, notably the Don Ameche and Frances Langford radio comedy series from the 1940s,The Bickersons, and Jackie Gleason's TV classic,The Honeymooners.
The jokes were savage, key relationships were marked by ennui and indifference, and the Bundy family name couldn't help but make one think of America's most notorious, real-life serial killer at the time. Yet the show had a hint of Golden Age Hollywood gloss, a retro-screwball feel that one could detect in the snappy verbal warfare between husband Al Bundy (Ed O'Neill) and wife Peggy (Katey Sagal). The characters, and the show, eschewed sentimentality, which certainly opened the floodgates to comic cynicism but also kept a door ajar for moments of genuine sweetness. A decade later, however, by the time Fox cancelled the increasingly expensive series,Married... with Children's first-season tone would be considerably different, replaced by a stronger reliance on running jokes and character stereotypes, particularly concerning Bundy children Kelly (Christina Applegate) and Bud (David Faustino).
That evolution makes watchingMarried... with Children's first 13 episodes, once again, quite instructive. Those programs are all on this two-disc set, including the startling pilot, in which Al and Peggy lock horns over marital politics and enlist naive new neighbors Steve (David Garrison) and Marcy (Amanda Bearse) in a battle of the sexes. There's also the classic "Whose Room Is It, Anyway," concerning the Bundys' competition to connive Steve and Marcy into building a recreation room, and "Thinnergy," a very funny piece about a diet that supposedly boosts sexual interest.--Tom Keogh』

(Bookend of Great Seasons) 『I own all the seasons except the first and last, and I've had them for a while and viewed them multiple times. As a general comment, I think Seasons 2-5 are consistently better than the seasons that come after. If you see George Rannie's review on Season 6, I agree with much of what he says, especially after having recently viewed the seasons backwards, from Season 6 to Season 5. The humor of Season 5 and before has a more "natural" feel, the setups are more realistic, and the humor, as in previous seasons, is more often subtle and cerebral. Although I'm not getting rid of my Seasons 6-8-- the quality overall is still good, if you're a Frasier fan-- I'm happiest with everything up to and including Season 5.』 『Frasier's fifth season is marked by two central themes. First is Roz's (Peri Gilpin) unexpected pregnancy, which naturally opens the door for countless promiscuity jokes for the radio show's beleaguered producer. The second is the continuing drama of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and his frosty wife, Maris, which seemed to finally come to a head. Not that even a good marriage has ever kept Niles from pining for Daphne (Jane Leeves), of course. Frasier's (Kelsey Grammer) show is sailing along, and for the occasion of his 1000th show, is honored by the mayor for "Frasier Crane Day," which allows the cast to do some rare location shooting in Seattle. His personal life continues to sputter, even when he meets a perfect woman (Sela Ward as a fashion model studying zoology, Lindsay Frost as a high-powered defense attorney). Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Best Deal on One of The Best Men's Colognes Ever!!!) 『When looking for a great new cologne for my boyfriend, we went to so many different stores looking for one that he wasn't allergic to, and that smelled delicious to me. When we tested this one, both of us knew this one was the one! Not only was it absolutely the best smelling cologne I had ever smelled, but it didn't bother his allergies at all! So we bought a bottle and he wore it all the time, much to my delight. But at Thanksgiving, when visiting family, he accidently picked the bottle up with wet hands and it fell on the tile floor in the bathroom and broke. Eighty dollars gone in an instant! Well, I knew he had to have a replacement, and I searched all over for the best deal, and here on Amazon I found the best deal ever! The cologne came in a new, sealed box, perfect condition, and he was delighted with having it as one of his Christmas presents!
You can bet from now on whenever I need replacements for my perfumes or his cologne, I will look here first! Best deals and best qualty, you just can't ask for anything more!』
(Outstanding reptilian scent) 『As part of my religion, snake-handling, we are only allowed to wear the scent and branding of the reptile. As there are not many snake brands out there, we are forced to accept all reptilian branding as our sign. This is no exception. A delightful scent, it smells good and keeps me in style from both an olfactory and spiritual perspective. Highly recommended. A word to the wise, though, I was really into Izod for a while there for the same reasons until I later found out they are not reptilian. They only sound like they are. Wish I had known that a long time ago. I hope this helps some of you stay on the path of the reptile and not make the same mistakes I did.』

It'll take my daughter some practice, but its kinda hard to find what goes where when you dont have a picture of the puzzle! - Some of the pieces are tight fitting. I think this may be because its new.. we just need to break it in some, but some of the pieces you have to give some force to put them together.
Pros: - The durability.. gotta love Melissa&Doug! We are a huge fan of them, have so many of their toys, and the durability of this toy is excellent. Much better than those cardboard puzzles! - The puzzle pieces are perfect for my daughter's hands. They aren't too small, so she can try to put them together. - The picture isnt bad either! My daughter loves the picture of the horses! I do appreciate how the horses are all different colors.. it makes it easier finding which pieces go where (5 horses.. all different colors, it helps!).
Overall, we love this puzzle! I rated it a 4 star just simply b/c of the missing background picture.. dont get me wrong - the puzzle is not difficult to put together at all, but for a young child it might be.. simply b/c they have no picture of what they are putting together!』
(My 3 year old loves this!) 『This is another great Melissa and Doug puzzle. It is challenging, but not too much, so that my daughter loves it. The pieces are thick enough to make it durable, and will take a little breaking in. All in all a great puzzle.』
(Great Puzzles!) 『My 3-year old loves these puzzles. They are colorful, durable, and worth the money!』
(Excellent product.) 『I love Melissan&Doug products! Extremely durable. Vibrant colors. Solid build. I loved it so much I bought 3 different ones. A much better investment than cardboard puzzles. Buy it!』
(Great puzzles) 『My daughter is 2 1/2 yrs old and loves these puzzles. She does them over and over again. The wood backed pieces make them more durable than cardboard puzzles - and they are great for spatial reasoning.』 『This colorful 48 piece jigsaw puzzle takes you into a meadow of colorful horses at play with butterflies, birds, and rabbits. It comes in a sturdy wooden tray. Dimensions are 15.75 x 11.75 inches. Ages 4 and up.』

The only downside to this product is the unpackaging. You mush have patience... Everything is taped down or wire tied on and will take several minutes to un-do. Other than that it is a great product and it gets a lot of use.
Thanks!』
(fun to organize) 『My daughter who is 6, loves organizing the pets. She really gets into the "pet world". She keeps it set up on her dresser all the time.』
(Littlest Pet Shop Pet Adoption Center Playset) 『Littlest Pet Shop Pet Adoption Center Playset Our 6yr old Grand daughter is crazy about this! Seems to be well made and easy to manage for a little one. We also purchased the carrying case!』
(LPS brings Big fun) 『We bought this for our 6 y/o daughter and she loves it. She does not typically play with toys, she tends toward art and creativity but she hasn't left this alone since Christmas. She loves all the places for the little pets to go and all the things she can pretend they do. She even made a play around the Adoption Center. It is big but that also means it can accommodate a lot of pets. The only complaint is the myriad of little accessories - but that comes with all LPS stuff. This is a great choice if you have a LPS fan in your home. Definitely worth the $ for us.』
(Great for the pets) 『I am a mother of a 2 year old girl, and 4 and 5 year old boys. They love playing with the pets and using their home. We have only had it for about 2 weeks but it seems durable. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Fun toy for fans of Superman and Krypto!) 『My 4 year old got this for Christmas and thinks it's pretty fun. He likes playing with this along with his Imaginext Batman and Batman accessories. Now Superman can work with Batman!』
(Excellent toy for a super hero loving kid) 『I ordered this for my son to go in the Imaginext Batcave, but oddly Superman spends more time in the space station/rocket ship set. An Imaginext crossover character! The little Super Dog is the best - and he can wear the space helmet that comes with the set. I did think it was a bit pricey for one character with no vehicle, but it was well worth it. If your child loves his DC Super Friends Batcave, then you must have this.』
(Fun play figure) 『You can't mean 16.99, it goes for 6.99 at any store. We got the Bat Cave which has Batman and Robin, so I was pleased to find Superman in the same size. His feet are positioned the same so Superman can work the Bat Cave and ride the Bat Cycle too.
By the way, the giant green thing is a piece of Kryptonite and apparently Superman wears the space helmet and can grab it with the claw to hide it or something. His dog is Krypto and is in the coloring book we had purchased recently. It kind of needs a bit of intro on all this, but there isn't any. No biggie if you're familiar with the new DC Super Friends universe.』
(Great toy!) 『Great toy! My daughter loves superdog so she was happy to get this. Really hard to find this or any superdog toys in stores.』
(My Son Loves it!!!) 『My 4 1/2 year old son bought this with is own money as an addition to his Batcave. He was so excited when it came. I love the imaginext brand for encouragine the imagination in kids. My son will spend hours creating elaborate stories because the parts look so real. My only complaint about this product is that the kryptonite that comes with Superman hurts when you step on it ;)』 『Imagine a world of excitement and action where you decide what happens next! Superman comes with Krypto the dog, Kryptonite and a space helmet with gripping action!』

The desserts are tiny and adorable, and the recipes are simple, but the book conveys a wintry sparsity at odds with its subject matter. Furthermore, the author has sacrificed quality and flavor to simplicity: anyone who has ever had real dulce de leche can tell you that it cannot be imitated by melting Brach's milk caramels with heavy cream.
If what you are looking for is a resource to help you create the perfect bite, this is not the book for you.』
(Petite Sweets: Bite-Size Desserts to Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth) 『I often think about what kind of literary voice a cookbook author is striving for before I read the cookbook for the first time. In the case of Beatrice Ojakangas, who wrote "Petite Sweets," as a "James Beard Cookbook hall-of-fame author" I'm sure she wanted to sound authoritative as in "I know my stuff," but to me, once I read through the whole book, she also sounded 'motherly." An unusual voice for a cookbook author.
While there are no nutritional tables in the book to let her readers know how much one of her bite-size morsels will cost them in ounces and/or pounds when they reluctantly step on a scale, you can tell from some of the recipe's ingredients, such as in "Angel Cakes with Lemon Sauce," which makes 24 servings, that it won't put you into a deep, dark, depressing funk because you lost control and ate one or two.
Learning how to downsize desserts, your own, or making Little Cakes, Petite Pies&Tarts, Fruit&Berry Desserts, Mousses and Chilled Desserts, Creams, Custards and Frozen Desserts to Pastries and Sweets from her dessert recipe book with gorgeous photographs by Roger LePage is one of the newest food trends and Ojakangas is leading the way with her 2009 thin but masterful book.
Buy the book, try all of the recipes if you can find the time and enjoy eating one of each or sampling several. Take Ojakangas and her publisher's word for it, that's good advice. Maybe even - motherly?』
(Superbly illustrated throughout with the color photography of Roger LePage) 『Especially appropriate for parties, small bite-sized deserts can provide a truly gourmet touch to any and all celebratory events. That's why Beatrice Ojakangas' "Petite Sweets: Bite-Sized Desserts To Satisfy Every Sweet Tooth" is such a timely and highly recommended addition to personal, family, and community library cookbook collections. Superbly illustrated throughout with the color photography of Roger LePage, "Petite Sweets" offers a range of delectable treats from Fresh Ginger Carrot Cakelets; Whoopie Pies; Chocolate Truffle Tarts; and Applesauce Crisp; to Chocolate-Dipped Cherries; Creamy Pumpkin Mini Mousses; Miniature Bread Puddings; and Crispy Cream Puffs. Palate pleasing and 'kitchen cook friendly', this compilation of miniature desserts is also especially commended to the attention of professional caterers as well. 』
(The cookbook that makes you go "Awww") 『Who knew baking could be so cute? But every time one of my co-workers sees this cookbook on my desk, they say, "Awww." Then, they flip through the pictures and say, "Yum!" And then they fling it away and say that it's making them hungry, LOL.
So, basically, this is book full of recipes of adorable, miniature desserts. The idea behind mini-desserts is that you can eat a smaller portion because it's healthier, because you don't want any more than just a little somethin', or because you want to sample lots of mini-desserts. These are all good thoughts in my book! And on top of that, the presentations of these charming sweets, thanks to lots of wonderful photos, is inspiring enough to make me want to whip up a few of everything in the book.
Petite Sweets contains chapters on Basics; Little Cakes; Petite Pies and Tarts; Fruit and Berry Desserts; Mousses and Chilled Desserts; Creams, Custards, and Frozen Desserts; and Pastries and Sweets. I think you'll agree that that pretty much covers the sugary territory. Most of the recipes are fairly simple--in some cases a little more basic than I might have chosen, but the author, Beatrice Ojakangas, offers useful advice on how to adapt other favorite recipes for miniature versions. And some of her shortcuts are just plain clever, such as using a whole vanilla wafer as the base of a miniature cheesecake.
A lot of the recipes call for specialized mini baking dishes, but there are helpful substitutions like to use mini muffin tins with foil cupcake liners for those of us who don't yet own 24 miniature baking ramekins. And who are you kidding? You know you'll be prowling Williams-Sonoma waiting for a variety of mini pans and dishes to go on sale. How can you resist, when the results are so darn cute and scrumptious? Soon you too will be turning Coconut Rum Butter Cakes out of the mini Bundt cake pans. And you'll be filling up that old shot glass collection with Chocolate Espresso Mousse. And you'll be collecting vintage parfait glasses to hold your Vanilla Banana Cream Pies.
Have I not tempted you yet? Can you resist the Miniature Bread Puddings, the Whoopie Pies, the Angel Cakes with Lemon Sauce, the Mini Chocolate Soufflés, the Strawberry Bruschetta, the Fresh Ginger Carrot Cakelets, the Greek-Style Honey-Nut Pastries, the Blueberry Cobblerettes, the Crispy Cream Puffs, the Mango Mousse, the Chocolate Truffle Tarts...? As you can see, the list goes on and on. Resistance is futile. Get to baking!』
