(Awsome Rice Cooker) 『I love this rice cooker. I had an inexpencive rice cooker that we had been using the last 9 years. My husband acidentlly dropped it and we decided to replace it with a really nice one because it had become an esentual kitchen appliance for us. We decided to replace it with this rice cooker. When you start it it plays twinkle twinlke little star (my daughter who's two loves it) and when it ends it plays another song
It has a timer where you can set it to finish cooking when you want dinner. I put all of my ingredients in and set the timer for when I get home from work. It starts cooking about 45 minutes before the time you set and then it's ready and waiting for you. Unlike a slow cooker, it's not cooking all day. That's important because I am normally gone more than 8 hours each day and stuff gets over cooked in the slow cooker when I leave it.
All the different rice settings. I love the porrage cycle.

(Made in China....if that matters to you) 『I have made every effort to NOT buy/feed anything made in China to my pet. I researched these duck/sweet potato treats before finally deciding to buy them. Nowhere on the amazon product page does it tell you where these treats are made, so I searched for the Smokehouse website which claimed that ONLY some of their CHICKEN treats contained chicken from China, but all other products are made in the USA. So, I felt safe in purchasing these duck/sweet potato treats. After opening a bag, and giving them to my dog did I glance at the product origin. Needless to say my dog likes them very much, but I was NOT happy to find PRODUCT OF CHINA on the bag.
Boo hiss to amazon for not putting the product origin on the product page, and to Smokehouse for misleading consumers on their product information website. Why do they do this, because there are customers just like me that care where the product originates. Many of you may not be concerned about this, but I am, and I think it's very misleading not to provide accurate, and complete information about the product when purchasing from an internet store. At least the product doesn't smell like plastic like the Dingo products.
I won't be purchasing these again. My dog seemed to like them, but she won't be getting anymore of them. I took a star off due to the lack of complete information from amazon, and misleading information from Smokehouse.
UPDATE: Big thumbs up to amazon for great customer service. When I called to return this item they were very helpful in processing a refund, and because it is considered a grocery item I didn't even have to return the items. I had also purchased the Smokehouse duck chips, but they too are made in China. I suggested the addition of the country of origin to both product pages. Just another reason why I don't hesitate to purchase from amazon. They truly have great customer service....rare these days.』

Her style suits Broadway perfectly and this album is a gem. I love it. A collection of well and lesser known (to me at least) hits, with enough variety to use her versatility. Although I have never been too interested in her, I know that Bette Davis was a talented actress, but she could also be very callous and vengeful and extremely mean-spirited. I find it inexcusable that she collectively had poor Joan blackballed because Bette Davis was jealous of Joan's beauty and gentility and gracefulness. Joan Crawford, a star who pioneered the modern American cinematic form, a star who acted in silents when Bette Davis was still in nappies, no less, deserved much, much better than she received.
According to Joan's close friends and assistants at the time, Joan was so emotionally and physically torn, drained and beaten down from the wanton abuse that Bette Davis threw at her that she had no other choice but to check herself into the hospital. Joan did not know how to fight. She was not a fighter in the literal sense. Joan was a pacifist who loved people. And we have to remember that this was her doctor's orders and it was for her own personal health and well-being. And while poor Joan was in the hospital she actually heard of her firing over the radio. They just threw her away like yesterdays newspaper. So sad and so tragic and so disrespectful and disgraceful. But Joan (may she rest in peace) was always a professional and always such a kind and wonderful person and even until the day she passed away never had a bad word to say about Bette Davis or the producers of this film.
Bette Davis always got the very best writers, directors, editors and producers and scripts. Like a poor, starving, innocent, puppy, looking for tables-scraps, Joan simply had to make do with whatever the studio was throwing her way. But Joan, unlike Bette, was always able to make it work because she personified the American woman. She worked harder than any other (wo)man in Hollywood and like a cat holding onto it's 9th life, sustained her career for 6 decades.
As if playing second-fiddle to a second-rate "actress" wasn't bad enough, kind-hearted Joan had to contend with the veiled comments about her appearance, too. Yet, these same critics making these comments almost never bothered to mention that Joan always looked at least 17 years younger than Better Davis. Nor did they ever mention how beautiful and elegant Joan always looked whenever she was seen out in public, even when she was well into her late '60s.
Joan made a classic movie of her own in 1964, titled "Strait-Jacket." And as Ms. Diane Baker (Joan's co-star in the film said in the '02 DVD featurette) if it hadn't been a horror movie, where, by now everyone had all of these preconceived notions about Joan, she likely would have been nominated for an Oscar.
Incidentally, the plot of "Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte" is actually rather similar to Joan's other 1964 film, "Fatal Confinement," which is much, much better than "Hush...Hush...Sweet Charlotte" (and came out first.)
I found the performance (or lack there of) by Bette Davis to be lacking in anything even remotely real and human. Like most of her roles (with a very, small exception) she came off as hard, brazen, not very ladylike and rather inhuman (and inhumane) and un-relatable. Incidentally, Agnes Moorhead looked like a regular transvestite. The only performance that was not lacking pretense was that of Ms. Olivia de Havilland (who is still very much alive and kicking.)
If you can find the rare Key Video release of this film, I say get it only because it has a rather unusual cover. However I do not recommend this movie for any other purposes, but if you really must see it wait for it to come on TV.
According to Wikipedia there is actually an original scene in the movie that Joan filmed that is still intact, "There is a long shot in the beginning of the movie, when Miriam gets out of the taxi upon her arrival at the Hollis plantation, that actually shows the back of Joan Crawford's head and not de Havilland's." Why would Joan's portion be left in and not cut out? Some conspirisists think that it was done on purpose to capitalize on Joan's huge name and worldwide box office appeal and loyal public, who, to this day only have the best to say about her.
Contrary to many books and reports stating otherwise, there was never a "feud" between Joan and Bette Davis. Joan was too much of a lady to wallow in the mud with the pigs and simply found it beneath her to ever disrespect anyone, so she simply said nothing. That is one of the (many) reasons why I have so much respect for her.

(Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte) 『Love this movie, but ordered for a friend who loves it even more!!! It's a classic!』
(FANTASTIC PERFORMANCES) 『Bette Davis, Olivia deHavilland&Agnes Moorehead gives fantastic performances in this wonderful if slightly over the top horror classic. This film was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and when you watch it you can see why. In my opinion this film is even better than "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" Just the dialogue and snappy lines alone is worth watching this movie and having Bette, Olivia&Agnes deliver those lines is pure fun! Some of the lines that Bette says in the film: "Where you are I could spit in your eye...with no strain at all", "What do you think I asked you here for...company?!", and the best line of all (directed at Olivia deHavilland)- "You're a vile, sorry little [...]!" Wonderfully witty and campy dialogue that is a joy to watch and see. Agnes Moorehead has some great lines with her drawn out southern accent: "You know she broke that dadburn teapot up there...tea running all down the walls! Shooooweeee! "She nottin but a chil'" and my favorite (also directed at Olivia deHavilland) "Oh so your finally showin' the right side of you'face ain't ya...well I seen it all the time". If you can't find something to love about this film, then there is something wrong with you. They don't make classic suspense/horror films like this anymore.』
(Great Performances, Some Unintentional Humor and A Tad Bit Junky) 『Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte by Robert Aldrich has a some very tacky elements to it. The conspiracy from two "good" characters to "nobody" playing the piano in the wee hours of the morning compile with some, surprisingly, excellent acting and some funny scenes. The scene that really got me laughin' was the first murder. "OH NO MY BELOVED HAND! OH MY GOD!" throw in the incredibly fake severed hand and I do believe we have a comedy. Another thing that confused the hell outta me was the countless twists and turns that came. First Charlotte killed John, then her dad, then **SPOILERS** Jewel, Charlotte's rival. The film really catapulted off of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?'s success, and HHSC portrays no comparison to WEHBJ, it was actually intended to be a follow up with Joan Crawford. The similarities between the two are uncanny, aging woman, going crazy, hostages, murder the list goes on. Performances in Hush... Hush are actually great. Bette Davis is great, as usual, Agnes Morrehead is brilliant as loyal servant, Velma, Olivia de Havilland is intriguing toward the end of the film. But, Joseph Cotten sort of drifts away from the rest of the cast but somehow finds his way back. Cinematography is simple and quite boring. Joseph Biroc provides no interesting shots what so ever. The plot and idea in general is quite cliche and unoriginal. Murder from many years ago, conspiracy against murderer, murderer is not who you think. Seen it before? I seriously think that you have.』
("Bette and Olivia Nearly Destroy Each Other In This!") 『It was announced in December, 1963 that the two stars of "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, would be reunited for "Hush, Hush...Sweet Charlotte". After the huge financial and critical success of "Baby Jane", studios were fawning all over themselves for a vehicle the would bring these two movie goddesses back together. Before "Baby Jane" no one wanted Davis and Crawford in their movies, as the film studios felt they did not appeal to the box office. Once Joan and Bette's careers were reignited again, Hollywood was knocking down their doors. "Hush, Hush..." was suppose to star the two, but because of ill health and Davis' harsh treatment of her on the set, Joan fell ill and was hospitalized. What a terrible loss the studio had, as well as us fans, as we never saw Joan as Miriam in the final film. It would have been so neat to see Joan, as Miriam, beating the crap out of Bette as Charlotte, as the complete opposite happened in "Baby Jane", where Bette's character was the antagonist and abuser. Olivia DeHavilland does, however, give a remarkable performance in this film as Miriam. Olivia detetested doing bitch roles, but both Bette and director Robert Aldrich persuaded her to do the film. What makes her character so evil is the subtext in which she uses in her portrayal: we, as the audience, at the beginning of the picture, believe that Miriam is such a kind-hearted, soft spoken woman who's best interest is her cousin Charlotte's welfare: we soon discover none of this is true as Olivia portrays one of the most evil, psychotic women ever on film. The rest of the cast is first rate, from Agnes Moorehead, who plays Charlotte's maid Velma, to Joseph Cotten, who plays an unscrupulous doctor, out to destroy Charlotte. "Hush, Hush...Sweet Charlotte" is the best film in the "Baby Jane" genre. There were many 1960's films that tried to duplicate the success of "Baby Jane", like "Lady in a Cage", Straight-Jacket", and "Dead Ringer", but "Hush, Hush" comes a close second to being the sequel that it was suppose to be to the mother film. According to Bette Davis, she wasn't overly fond of the film, but fans of these hag-films, like me, love these vehicles: nothing like watching former movie queens, looking like hell, and tearing up the scenery! This film also received a whopping 7 Academy Award nominations, but winning none: at the time the film set a record for a horror film receiving the most Oscar nods. This record would be broken in 1991 by "The Silence of the Lambs". There is also another DVD release of "Hush, Hush" that is available, but if you already have the 2005 DVD release of the film I would suggest in passing on it. There is a neat documentary on the film, but it doesn't really offer anything that we ardent Bette and Joan fans don't already know. Contrary to public belief there are no Joan Crawford deleted scenes on the 2008 DVD release. Rumor has it 20th Century Fox destroyed the scenes that Joan did prior to leaving the film. (What more can you ask for?) 『I've just finished watching this DVD and I still have goose bumps. I own a lot of Joanie material, including TV performances from the early sixties but this here is the real deal. Pretty similar to the Dylan documentary "No direction home", we have material we didn't even know existed (an incredibly young Joanie singing "Barbara Allen" at the Club 47 in Cambridge in 1959 or 60 for instance) plus comments from the obvious companions such as Roger McGuinn and David Crosby as well as her former husband David Harris and their son Gabe. And then there's Dylan himself, finally acknowledging the influence Joan had on him and admitting that everybody, including himself, were trying to play guitar like her and sing her songs. We have Martin Luther King standing in front of the prison gates where Joanie was being kept for supporting draft resisters, voicing his support for her. She admits some things she appears to have never mentioned before, e.g. how she would stop in the middle of songs due to a sudden attack of stage fright and leave the stage only to reappear minutes later and pick up where she'd left off. And, she says, nobody ever talked to her about that, because they were all so sympathetic and didn't want her to feel embarrassed. It is so good to see that she has aged well and that her songs still move me. We see her sitting in the studio in the summer of 2008 with Steve Earle picking his acoustic guitar and Joan learning "God is God" and then he says "I wrote that one for you" and she is very moved. For viewers who are not familiar with the unreleased Dylan-Baez material the duets, most notably the carnival type Rolling Thunder Revue version of "I pity the poor immigrant" will open up a whole new world. The Dylan-Baez collaborations are so inspired and right on. Dylan himself says that they blended perfectly and he was sorry to see their relationship end. The DVD also has bonus tracks, interviews with fellow civil rights activists, with Steve Earle and Dar Williams, whose career didn't really take off until Joan took her on tour and recorded her songs. Toward the end everything gets very fast, we have three minutes of Joan in Sarajevo, three minutes about the death of her sister and their relationship, three minutes about Joan in Cambodia in the 1980s, maybe it would have been advisable not to try and pack almost seventy years into one hour and fifty minutes. It took Scorcese three and a half hours to tell Dylan's story. Joan would have deserved as much time. So I'm requesting a director's cut :)』

Early in this wonderful new documentary, Joan Baez states that many people tell her that they have known her music all their lives, yet many also confess that they know little about her, beyond her music. This statement did not strike me as odd; I needed only think about it for a brief moment, and I knew that it was true for me as well. Although I have loved and listened to the music of this incredible singer for over thirty years, admittedly far less than her stellar 50-year career, I confess that I had never really known much about her life. There were snatches of knowledge along the way - I knew that she was a tireless advocate of human rights, and I knew that her husband, David Harris, was jailed for inciting draft evasion shortly after they were married. I also knew that she had had a brief romantic fling with Bob Dylan. But, biographically speaking, that was where my knowledge of her ended. Although I have owned some of her earliest records for a very long time, I knew little about her career, family life or even her involvement in politics, although, of course, I had gleaned some of her activism just from her choice of material.
The film, which runs a little under 90 minutes, reflects a great deal of private and public information about Ms. Baez of which I was previously unaware. It also contains numerous clips of the early career, and the full story of her early triumphs. Some secrets are revealed; she speaks candidly about the stage fright that plagued many of her early performances, an affliction that no one was aware of. She comes across as humble and passionate as one would expect, yet the full breadth of her achievements were something that I, for one, had never really stopped to think about. Wherever there were downtrodden people in trouble, Joan Baez was there, lifting her gorgeous soprano in support and concern, and if any one attribute emerged above all others in this candid and interesting portrait, I would have to say it was her bravery. Although I was aware of her involvement with the civil rights movement, it came as an impressive surprise to learn that she was counted among Martin Luther King's closest personal friends. The newsreel footage of her personally escorting small black children into a segregated school in the heart of KKK territory, Grenada Mississippi, was heartbreaking and uplifting. The film clips of her singing, "We Shall Overcome" to the throngs assembled to hear Dr. King's historic "I Have a Dream" speech were both thrilling and enlightening.
The film covers all of Joan Baez' career, much of her activism, and incorporates contemporary interviews with her and her peers, including Bob Dylan, her ex-husband, David Harris and her son, Gabriel Harris, among several others. When she speaks of the death of her beloved sister, Mimi Fariña, I was extremely moved.
I can't recall ever watching a more satisfying or entertaining musical documentary, save perhaps the excellent American Masters bio of Ella Fitzgerald, Something to Live For. My only quibble with Joan Baez: How Sweet the Sound is that, unlike the Ella Fitzgerald film, nowhere in the numerous but brief film clips is there a complete performance of a single song; it would have been nice if the producers had thought to include a complete musical number or two as extra features, However, this is not to say that the film does not deserve the five stars I award it here; the focus of this wonderful biography is to shed some information on Ms. Baez' life and career; those who are interested in her music have a plethora of albums to choose from.
On the whole, I enjoyed every single minute of this film, and it is highly recommended. 』

That's why kindergarteners persist in printing in all caps to start with, I betcha. In this likable little lullaby book, the Grownup Letters are trying to get their rambunctious offspring into bed. This delightful book would be greatly loved in every preschool classroom or kindergarten as a pre-naptime read-aloud. Judy Sierra's sparse tight rhyme combines with stunningly childlike illustrations by Melissa Sweet. Check out her website at [...] where you'll find a terrific concentration game kids will love. Sweet's illustrations personify each "little letter" as the child of its "big daddy or momma" letter most charmingly. On the endplates, the letters, big and little, are easily identified as belonging to each other by color, composition, texture, all except the X which I suppose will always be a bit of an odd one. The sense of aliveness of the letters permeates the pages which are solid color on the left, scene-filled on the right, making this a perfect beginning-to-read title for those early readers who need big type on an uncluttered background. It is inherently charming to see adjacent letters of the alphabet enjoying their lives together, something I never thought of, but of course it makes sense. They spend so much time together, you know. Each rollicking picture includes objects related by their beginning letter to at least one of the letters in the scene; undoubtedly the favorite page will be "u" taking off his underwear. The illustrations are detailed and both overtly and subtly clever. For the child that likes to reread the same book constantly, there is a lot of detail to discuss and discover.

(Fun Way to Learn the ABCs) 『I'm not sure who liked this book better, me or my son! THE SLEEPY LITTLE ALPHABET by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Melissa Sweet is just the cutest darn book that I've seen in a long time. I couldn't wait to read it to my son; and as soon as we finished the book, we went back and looked at all of the pictures again. I'm certain that it's going to be a new favorite for us.
THE SLEEPY LITTLE ALPHABET is an ideal bedtime book. The basic idea is that each of the letters in the alphabet are getting ready to go to bed. For example, the letter B "still has a bath to take" and the letter T "tucks in her teddy bear." The story goes through each letter in the alphabet until all of the letters are sound asleep in their own beds. It is just too adorable. I think the book will help to get your child into the mindset of sleep (as much as any book can.)
This book is a quick read and I can almost promise that your child will stay interested the entire time. There story is pretty catchy since it does rhyme, and there are just a few big words on each page. What really makes this book extra-special are the illustrations -- they are just beautiful. I don't know if you can tell with the small picture of the book at the beginning of this review, but each letter has a funny-little face and lots of colors and patterns. Every page in this book is cuter than the next, and I love how the illustrator even managed to capture facial expressions on the little letters. There is a lot going on in each picture and I think children will keep noticing new things every time they pick up the book.
As a mother, I absolutely loved the story, but I also thought it was terrific that this book teaches children their ABCs. I thought it was just so cute that the children letters were lowercase, and the parent letters were the capitals. What I especially liked is that the text in the book referenced the letters in their lowercase form which are often times more difficult for children to learn. This story is so entertaining that kids might not even realize that you are working on their letters with them.
In fact when my son and I read this book, I make him say the letters that appear in the text -- it's kind of like a read-a-long for us. He likes participating and I like that he is practicing his lowercase letters. He thought this book was terrific and he laughed a lot when I read it the first time. Of course, his favorite parts were the letter U who "takes off his underwear" and the letters O and P who "upset the potty" (he is a boy for sure because anything potty related is hilarious.) He also liked the letter Q who is "quiet as a bunny." I was shocked when we talked about this story how much he remembered about the various letters and their bedtime activities.
I can't recommend this book enough. It is absolutely perfect for the toddler or preschooler in your life. It has already been named the winner of the 20209 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio. As I was reviewing the recipes on page 16 and 17 for royal icing, I found what appears to be an error. On page 17, at the top, it says to use 4 tablespoons of meringue powder with 2 cups of confectioners sugar for both piping and flooding, but only 3 tablespoons with 4 cups of confectioners sugar. This made no sense to me, so I checked in the original book and it appears that it should have read 4 teaspoons instead of 4 tablespoons. Did anyone else notice this? Are the recipes incorrect?』
(Simply Beautiful! So Glad I Bought It.....) 『These Christmas cookies blew me away and there are a lot more beautiful designs than just what's on the cover. The creativity runs through the entire book -- and as someone who wears glasses, I don't think the book or the type are too small, either. I like the fact that they spell it out for you and there some really sophisticated cookies that are easy to make. I bake a lot, but even I learned something here.

I felt there were too many "easy" cookies that weren't that impressive. Their best work is all represented on the cover so I was hoping for much more of that, but didn't find it. Oh well, it's still a cute book that might give you some ideas to work with.
Back to the size - you should take it into consideration because if you want it for a coffee table book, it's a bit too small for that. Also, if you want to prop it up on your counter to look at while you're working (like I do), good luck. You'll need something to keep the book open, but still not block what you're trying to see.
