The musicianship is really quite good, as Sweet has used his long-time sidemen Richard Lloyd (Television), Ivan Julian (Richard Hell&The Voidoids), Greg Leisz (Beck, Bill Frisell), Ric Menck (Velvet Crush), and a guest vocal by Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles). The album does have a few missteps, such as "Let's Love" and the Tom Pettyisms of "Burn Through Love". Just as the Girlfriend album didn't follow any guitar trends, this one follows suit and it makes me happier for that reason.』
(Stellar Effort) 『Because it is by Matthew Sweet, and perhaps because many fans of his disagree as to what his best two Lps are, this set already has a contentious reception, and even some shrugs. But if this album had been released by a mystery band in 1972, it would now be spoken of in the same sentence as the great double Lps of the late 60s. I tend to like all of his records, and "Sunshine Lies" runs the gamut from his tougher "dinosaur act" stuff to the gentler tones of his Lloyd-less records like "Mars." "Sunshine Lies" has some remarkable songs, including the title cut and "Byrdgirl" and "Let's Love." (The set is all strong, but side two of the vinyl version is brilliant.) It has a lovely sense of melody, a wild and sweet variety of guitar sounds, and many songs that combine a fascinating sense of craft, a feeling spontaneous necessity, and rock-poetry reminiscent of masters of desire and understatement like Lennon and Berry.』
(Excellent CD!) 『A rock solid return to form for Mr. Sweet. I've been a big fan from the beginning. I will admit to being a little disapointed with the last two disc. Sunshine Lies grabbed me instantly with great lyrics, melodies, and numerous heavy guitar riffs. Matthew is in great voice throughout. Sweet's high vocal range is countered again by the tangled, jagged soloing of Richard Loyd and Ivan Julian. I caught the band live 2 weeks ago. Excellent show. The new stuff played well along side the classics. (Ric Menck is the coolist drummer.)

(Satisfying Sweet) 『As rabid fan of the big 3, I've liked the most recent CDs fine. I liked this one quite a bit too the first weeks I had it. Something happened though, at the GAMH show in SF: Great band + Hot groovy fun, and suddenly I could properly hear Sunshine Lies, even the tracks he didn't play that night. Somehow the key to the puzzle was transmitted to me--by means of feedback, I'm guessing...the mechanism is unclear.
This is an extreme set of songs, seriously over-the-top as both ear candy and lyric sincerity. I think the step required to access Sunshine Lies is awakening the silly 16 year old rocker within, so play it LOUD. Delivering rueful musings of experience wrapped in these shimmery Pet-Sounds-kind of pop gloss produces a dissonance that works for me. Sunshine Lies asserts sweet optimism even after all that young rocker has seen and done, a neat trick.
(I Need A) Room to Rock In is our new house motto. And Back of My Mind is the best album-ender since Party Girl.

Many long time fans hate this album while new fans of the band loved it and many more old fans liked it as well. This marks a departure for Hooverphonic from their original, signature sound and into a more radio-friendly pop sound. There are bits of hip-hop weaved into their usual atmospheric trip-hop. Not a completely radical departure, but still a noticeable difference towards radio territory. These kinds of changes in a group's sound always alienate fans of a more unique sound such as the one that made Hooverphonic famous. To be fair, their sound has evolved on every release, and on here we find them at their most Middle-of-the Road.
Old fans are understandably shaken and stirred by the sound of this album but guess what? It's quite good. If this had been their first album, it wouldn't have attracted the audience that has given them cult status. Instead, it is an album that is not representative of the band as a whole but still is interwoven with their more experimental sound seamlessly with the new sound. Biased fans seem to miss that and dismiss the album as a whole. This is my favorite album of theirs, but their best is Blue Wonder Power Milk. That one is more varied and realized. This one is more instantly accessible. Old fans will like this one if they give it a chance. New fans will be disappointed slightly if they start here and work their way through the rest of the catalog because the rest of the catalog will sound different to them and they will already love the sound of this one.
Another unique feature of this album is that there are 2 cd's and the second one is filled with second versions of the songs with identical titles,lyrics and melodies but different arrangements. This means that some versions of some songs are better on one cd than the other. For example, You Hurt Me is a danceable number on the first cd, while on the second cd it becomes a Maroon 5-influenced dance-rock song. Still, both cd's are listenable all the way through with few exceptions. cd 2 seems to be a bit more danceable and commercial.
Solution: Listen with an open mind and you will love this. Then listen to their other albums with an open mind and you will love them as well. Highlights:

(Good, not great) 『A good effort, but does not compete with previous Hooverphonic albums. For the first time, I find myself skipping some songs. The individual songs on the album do not connect as well as on previous albums. Still some really solid songs, but album as a whole does not flow as well.』
(Yes, it differs from the debut. That's the point. Get over it.) 『Like some of you, I was put off from hunting down Hooverphonic's other albums following the seminal "Stereo..." I'm a little irritated that I let so many negative reviews steer my decision, because it's clear that the naysayers aren't scorning the later albums on their own merits, but what THEY think Hooverphonic should stand for. Since when has a band altering or growing in their sound been a bad thing? Should they make the same damned album over and over again and then be cast off as uninspired and repetitive?
That said, I was immediately hooked after hearing the opening track, "You Love Me to Death." While deliciously dark and sexy at first listen, its powerhouse status is revealed when you come back to it again and again. And while I'm pretty sure that there are ProTools or other flattery on her vocals- wow, they just sail and soar throughout. That song alone is worth the price of admission (seriously). As silly as it sounds, it would have made a fantastic Bond film intro, both with the slinky sound and the lyric, "You love me to death / but death may love you more." Quit laughing at me :)
The rest of the album is full of what I can only describe as a more languid electro-pop, here and there revisiting their lauded debut album. I'm not sure why some people are convinced that any album by Hooverphonic that isn't textbook 'trip-hop' is by definition a bad one, or a 'step down.' Hell, even "Magnificent Tree," their most widely panned album, is dotted with pop gems. This sort of genre-exclusive negativity is reminiscent of Bent and their brilliant, low-tech release, "Ariels" (another fine album bemoaned by people who apparently hate real instruments, check it out).
Like almost all albums, there is some take it / leave it additions on "Sweet Music." But on the whole, I can listen to this entire album without skipping ahead. The only reason I don't give it five stars is because that rating is too easily thrown around and best reserved for those rare beacons of genius like, I dunno, Abbey Road. And you just can't give that one and "No More Sweet Music" the same five stars.』

I really do like all of their other albums also (with Jackie Cane being my least favorite), but this one really stands out to me as being extremely well crafted. This latest release, though it looks like it's a long way off from being out in the USA (I recommend buying it used), just keeps the magic rolling. If you watched it in 1990 when it came out then you'd probably think it was funny (like I did) but after buying it in 2006 and watching it again - I could barely sit through it! Sandra's humor is very "New York" and in some ways very sophisticated so if you don't know the name of designer furniture and clothing many of her jokes will go over your head as could many of the jewish and ethnic jokes. If you're into that type of humor then you might find it hysterical. It's a musical in case you didn't know but some of the songs are VERY SLOW (and, um, sorry to say... boring.) Whether she's playing herself or any number of other outspoken characters in the film version of her Off-Broadway show, Sandra Bernhard's hard to believe face remains the one constant. Yet she is always Sandra--even if the MC repeatedly introduces her as Sarah--and the stories she tells come mostly from her own life. Songs include "Me and Mrs. Jones," "Little Red Corvette," and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with John Doe in full-on "Rhinestone Cowboy" regalia. The stage bits are intercut with commentary about Bernhard from her manager (Lu Leonard) and actor Steve Antin (The Accused). Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (I gambled on this one...and lost...) 『When one thinks about some of the great films to come out of Hollywood with regards to gambling and such, movies like Rounders (1998), The Cincinnati Kid (1965), Owning Mahowny (2003), and The Sting (1973), to name a few, come to mind. One film that does not come to mind is Stacy's Knights (1982) for the specific reason that it sucks. I know, I know, you're probably shocked to hear me use such language, and usually I can find better ways to express myself, but this film just sucked, plain and simple. You may ask what was I expecting with a film like this? Academy gold? Not at all, but geez...it was almost like they tried to make it as bad as it was on purpose. Here's a bit of trivia for you...what does this film have in common with the Oscar winning movie Dances with Wolves (1990), besides the fact both star Kevin Costner? Well, I'll tell you...Michael Blake wrote both films, and also both films were produced by Jim Wilson (he also took the role of director here). The film also stars Andra Millian, who's probably best remembered from the rather annoying late 80's TV show "thirtysomething". Also appearing is Mike Reynolds (Young Lady Chatterley II).
The film begins with some very annoying ubiquitous disco-like music (get used to it, as you'll be hearing it throughout the film) that contains various gambling references, along with the continuing chorus of `Double Down', so, with that, and the showing of a lot of neon lights, I'm assuming we're in for a film about gambling and such...we see a frumpy, mousy woman, with perhaps the biggest glasses I've ever seen short of Elton John in his glam heyday, making her way to a blackjack table, playing one hand, losing, and then leaving (by the way, the dowdiness of her appearance certainly foreshadows the possibility of a fabulous makeover later on in the film). Turns out she came all the way to Reno, from San Francisco (or possibly L.A.), and then drove all the way back...okay...arriving home she runs crying to her very ugly drama teacher (I'm not seeing where this is going at all) who comforts her, and then the two return to Reno to gamble some more. Turns out the bespeckled girl is named Stacy, and she has some kind of ability to count cards, but hasn't quite learned how to master said skill. Her meager attempts catch the eye of a hanger on named Will Bonner (Costner), who talks his way into partnering up with Stacy because, apparently, he knows the `system', but can't play worth squat. Eventually through his tutelage Stacy becomes very successful, but now the Casino manager, Shecky Poole (Reynolds), has his eye on her and her companions, as he thinks they're cheating, but can't prove it...which leads to bit of tragedy as we see Casino owners can be quite vindictive. In an effort to get revenge, Stacy assembles a team of card counters, deciding to hit Shecky where he lives...in the pocket book.
If I had to pick one element of this film as being the worst, it would have to be the story, followed closely by the script. The characters are nonsensical and have no other reason for existing other than that's they way they're written. Costner's character is a prospector whose got some sort of gambling fever, along with being some sort of expert with cards, but can't play because he loses too much. Say what? And then Millian's character wants to be a lawyer, but suffers from a lack of self-confidence, so she decides to take up blackjack because she has the ability to count cards well...oh yeah, and then she, with the help of some old man who's supposed to be a mystical gambling guru (the cards are alive) that the casinos pay to keep him out, harnesses her skills to the point where she can tell what the next card from a deck before it's turned over...right...and then she assembles a team of cheaters at the end to take down the casino and the evil Shecky (complete with interviews of prospective gamblers...what, did she put an ad in the paper?). As far as the dialog, here's a pretty standard (the standard being awful) sample that occurs when the drama coach asks Costner's character about Shecky, the casino manager (his casino is perhaps the worst run gambling parlor I've ever seen), `Is he a nice guy?', to which Costner's character replies. `Heart like a barracuda.' What does that mean? The movie is filled with this sort of thing, like someone trying to be all hip and such but failing miserably. The story drags and drags and drags...the performances aren't all that bad, as it seemed like a lot of the actors were just here for the check and possibly some experience (I bet Costner would probably like to forget this little nugget of joy about as much as he would a film released four years later called Malibu Hot Summer (1986) aka Sizzle Beach, U.S.A.). Some things to watch out for...the drama coach, now all gussied up (she's still pretty nasty looking) seducing the casino owner Shecky, so that Stacy and her gang can run roughshod over the tables, scamming a load of dough. Pay particular attention the scene where Shecky, an older, greasy, unattractive man is prancing around in his red briefs...yuck.
The full screen (1.33:1) picture is passable, as is the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio. I was shocked to see the inclusion of some meager extras, especially since this is a Rhino release, and they're not usually known for such. The extras include some lame animated bios (all of three), a still picture slideshow (looks like still shots taken off the TV), and a trailer for a film called Galaxina (1980), starring former Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratten, before she got murdered by her crazy boyfriend.

("No one's lazy in Lazytown!") 『At first, I was put off of the show because of the title: "Lazytown". With so many shows nowadays conveying negative messages, why bother with another one? Well, the first episode I saw of this show was "Dancing Duel" and I realized that there was a positive message there. I bought this DVD since it had that episode on it and the other three episodes are just as good. Since I screen anything I buy for my nephews, if I don't enjoy it, I know they won't enjoy it. Hopefully, the reverse it true in this case, because I *love* the Lazytown series!

(Best film/Worst DVD) 『I've just found joy....I'm as happy as a baby boy...Finally! I have waited for a decade and a half for this film to get a digital release. I've written letters to Angelika...all without response. And here it is...with a completely inappropriate cover! Don't let the bad cover put you off. This is a great film. It pays homage to the end an era that is sadly no longer around. (I know this for sure...a few years ago, I went on a pilgrimage to the location of filming, The Heiden Hotel. Even then, it was in very sad shape. I recently read that it was sold and I have no doubt that it will be razed.)
But here, on film, the Heiden lives on as the wonderful Hotel Lorraine. Directed by the son-in-law of the Heiden's owners, Sweet Lorraine celebrates the final season of a decades old Catskill resort. It hosts a gaggle of future stars before they became regular faces on shows like The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Remember When as well as the wonderful Maureen Stapleton as hotelkeeper, Lillian Garber.
Perhaps the best reason to view this film is that it captures summer...starting with the anticipation of Memorial Day and Molly's eagerness to join the family business to the somberness of Labor Day and the developer's final offer. It overflows with affection for the era and for the subject. If you have a sweet spot for summer vacations and nostalgia, this is the film for you.
I've seen Sweet Lorraine over 50 times and I've worn out 3 vhs tapes. I've shown it to my high school students in Japan. I've ripped the theme song and put it on my iPod. OK...so maybe you won't go as far over the top as I did, but you'll be happy you spent the summer at Sweet Lorraine.

It opens an authentic and beautiful window into the preparation for a quinceañera (mexican Sweet Fifteen birthday celebration/ceremony/rite of passage for girls) in Tijuana, Mexico. Ana Maria is the youngest of five girls who has prepared for this event. She gets a lot of advice and support from her family. Her family consists of her five sisters, her brother (the eldest),and her mother, Lili. Lili has endured and overcome a lot in her life: mainly the infidelities and subsequent abandonment on the part of her husband, and her struggle with her health; not to mention the economic challenge of being in her situation. The movie paints an excellent portrait of the dignity and nobility of this humble family . It also paints a true picture of the many ways that a young woman needs to prepare for this celebration; including the rehearsals with her 'chambelanes' (the young men who 'escort' her into her first waltz and present her to society - on their shoulders) and the classes that she attends at the church every Saturday. Adam Taub, the director handles the camera expertly. One does not detect his presence at all. One only sees the beauty and challenges of a Mexican town and family. He uses angles, light and color beautifully. Another marvel about this movie is that this is one of his first efforts. It was a student project for a university class. His ten or more prizes are well-deserved. This movie would be an excellent resource for any educational level, and it is also just about exactly a class period long (40 minutes). I am a teacher, and several ofmy mexican students cried from the nostalgia of seeing the beauty and worth of Mexico depicted here. My only observation would be that the students I have who are not familiar with this custom did not learn how a humble family like this could be paying for such an extravagant event. But for being his first movie, this is simply marvelous. I don't go through a bottle but every few years. Evidently, it has been near six years since my last purchase, because the Bermuda people sold out to a USA concern six years ago, and now the marque is formulated in the USA.
This recent bottle is H2O and alcohol with a fraction of the oils of the Bermuda product. I had an e-mail conversation about my and my wife's impressions. The Bermuda Royall contact stated that the ingredients are the same, but the US Customs somehow regulates how much of the key oils can be used in the US product.
My wife used to love this. She noticed immediately that the new bottle has only a little of the impact of the fragrance and no depth. I have a bit of the old product, and she can tell the difference right away.
So, about $38 for a 4 oz. bottle for nothing.
I recommend not buying this product. You will find it now unsatisfying compared to what you bought several years ago.
Now I need to try to find another Bay Rum(Rhum) product that is satisfying to my wife and me.』
(Not quite as good as I recall.) 『I first tried Royall Bay Rhum about 40 years ago when I bought a bottle in the USVI. I really enjoyed its understated scent which I guess one could call "manly".
Perhaps it's just my memory, but I seem to recall the scent being quite a bit stronger and certainly a lot longer lasting. I still like the scent but find myself using it a lot more liberally than I do most colognes. By the way, I consider this to be more of an after shave than a cologne.
While it's not the most expensive cologne/after shave I've ever used, I think that it's expensive enough that it should be longer lasting or at least a lot stronger. As it is, I think that it's been cut with a lot of alcohol to stretch the more expensive ingredients. To put it bluntly, I find this product overpriced.
I'll probably use Bay Rhum again but it will not be Royall.』

Watson's history of cider starts with the apple itself in the Tien-Shan mountains of far off Kazakstan. Alma-Ata, formerly the Kazak capital, translates as "father of apples." There have been a number of apple-centric books published of late, all of them echoing similar historic details. Watson distinguishes himself by focusing on the place of cider--the alcoholic beverage--in human history, particularly American history. "In 1726," the author tells us, "it was reported that a single village near Boston, consisting of about 40 families, put up nearly 10,000 barrels of cider. One historian stated that in the year 1767 a per capita average of 1.14 barrels of cider were consumed in Massachusetts." That'd be 35 gallons per person!
The arrival of breweries and brewers with German and eastern European immigration in the late 1800s, the codling moth, the exodus from farm to city of the majority American population, Prohibition, bad winters--all these factors and more led to the decline of cider making in America. A few farmers continued in the tradition; everyone else made and sold apple juice and called it cider. The tradition hung on in Britain and Europe, however, and new American cider makers are taking advantage of this living body of knowledge, planting European cider apples and trying some of the old varieties still available in this country. Julie is a single mom doing her best to do the right thing. When I think of Julie, the word mosaic comes to mind. Sweet Love is a heart-rending novel rich w/ emotion. Michael is a brilliant gem. My Sweet Vegan by Hannah Kaminsky published by Fleming Ink. My daughter loves to cook the sweet things. With her best friend staying with us it was perfect timing. They love the book. They have a whole list of recipes they want to try. My grocery list is getting longer and longer. I have to remind them that we can not live on dessert alone. I love the ingredient list and baking supply list in the beginning of the book. When you make a switch from standard American diet baking to vegan baking it can be confusing. She explains the different ingredients very clearly. She talks about tools of the trade that will make baking so much easier for you. The pictures in this book are amazing! The girls loved it the most for that- there is nothing like a great visual. There is even a allergy index in the back that is very handy. The girls decided to make the Sesame Chews pg 176. Oh my goodness! We love those store bought sesame candies from the health food store- these are sooooo much better! They were simple to make. We all devoured them. I sent a few pieces with the hubs to band practice. They were so good he did not share. We can't wait to try more recipes from this book. I will be posting pictures of them as we do, so stay tuned! (Great and easy recipes) 『I just bought this book and have already tried two of the recipes. Both were delicious and very easy to make. I'm the only vegan where I work but when I brought my book in for others to view, several staff members were eagerly checking out the recipes. The book has something for everyone.
I recently made the fudge which took only minutes to prepare and was delicious. You can switch out the coconut and add crushed nuts and its equally wonderful.
I was surprised to see that there was even a recipe for a "canine cake" that's yummy enough to enjoy with your dog. It has ingredients that are healthy for people and safe for pets. I work at a humane society so I decided to try this out at a recent "puppy party." All I can say is that this recipe was a hit with both my colleagues and their dogs. Two paws up!
As an added bonus, the photos in the book are lovely. I'm impressed that Hannah Kaminsky is so talented and looking forward to trying her other recipes. I would highly recommend this book.』

I should have known by reading the recipe that you can't have drop cookies with 2 cups of wet ingredients (plus a mashed banana), 1 cup of sugar, and 2 cups of flour/oats. I doubled the oats and tripled (I stopped counting) the amount of flour and they are quite tasty. But, seriously?!
The website for the book should have an errata so I people don't have to make the corrections on their own. I am fortunate to be a trained pastry chef and able to work out problems in recipes.
