Dear Art,
The 1890's and early 1900's had their Ragtime music. In the 1920's the popular sound was know as Tin Pan Alley. As a young composer George Gershwin was a major contributor to the Tin Pan Alley music genre.
This album is comprised mostly of Gershwin's Tin Pan Alley tunes with two exceptions; the most notable of these is a piece that he debuted in concert in 1925. It was a jazz/classical work that clearly shows its Tin Pan Alley roots. While it was panned by the critics of the day it is now considered to be one of the great works of classical music. It is his Rhapsody in Blue (track 5).
After listening to this album I now know that not only was Gershwin a great composer, he was a fantastic pianist. He had a terrific sense of rhythm anad he played around with the tempo of the music with wondrous effect.
I hope that you enjoy the album as much as I did. If not, at least you have a new coaster for your tea glass.

(Who better to play Gershwin than Gershwin?) 『I suppose when it comes right down to it, there is no better interpreter of a person's music than the composer himself. From that axiom alone, this CD takes on an educational and historical perspective that makes it well worthwhile. I say educational, because there can be no doubt that Gershwin is, well, a Gershwin authority. And although it is true that the recordings are a little "flat", especially when it comes to dynamics, the producers used the given technology (computers and a disk clavier) expertly enough to make the listener at least aware that these are no ordinary performances of Gershwin tunes. Particularly with Rhapsody in Blue, the movement through the range of emotions and tones is really quite stunning and exciting, setting itself apart from every other version you've ever heard. Even from there, the CD goes to Swanee, and it is hard not to feel you are back in the early jazz era, sitting in a parlor listening to a relative or family friend while away the hours playing "contemporary" music. Every song brings out some feature of George's playing, and while it may not be a tribute CD in that sense, it is east to believe that it was, in any event, possible George knew he was recording for posterity when he first sat and made the rolls. This is, in short, a very fascinating CD. I would think any student of American music could not do without it, and any jazz music collector could definitely build his or her early jazz collection around this recording.』

(hard to believe this is almost 70 years old) 『Some of Frank's very earliest recordings , and the only ones he made with Harry James. As was often the case in the big band days , the vocalist was secondary to the band. It doesn't take much when listening to this package to hear how that was all about to change in Mr. Sinatra's case.』
(Earliest Sinatra, James is wonderful...) 『This recording is amazing, largely because it is over 60 years old and completely listenable. It is remarkable because in 1939 neither Sinatra or Harry James were making much money, traveling to engagements where they were treated less than royally. Kudos to Sony/Columbia for producing such a first-rate CD with a nicely done narrative booklet by George Simon (who reviewed the Harry James Band in 1939 and commented on Sinatra's"very pleasing vocals"!) and Will Friedwald.
The music -- well, it's a mixed bag, but 'All or Nothing at All' is often regarded as Sinatra's first step to stardom, and the recordings here are ample evidence. 'Ciribiribin', the James band theme song, is catchy, 'From the Bottom of My Heart' is is heartfelt, and overall the singing and orchestrations are fun. The most exciting part of this release, however, is the Roseland Ballroom performance, taped for radio, that includes 'Stardust', 'Wishing will make it so' and other great performances. What just floored me the first time I listened was that Harry James and Frank Sinatra are almost a backdrop to the evenings festivities -- you can hear people talking and milling around even on the tape.
While some of the songs are just okay ('My Buddy' seems never to have reappeared in Sinatra's next four decades of performing!), this is a great sample of Sinatra's absolutely (too?) smooth and creamy vocals of 1939.
I would recommend this if you are already a Sinatra or James fan, but Sinatra fans looking for more"swinging"vocals will want to visit the Capitol Records albums of the 1950s.』

(it's okay) 『this movie reminds me of my chess skills. it started out strong, but fell apart at the end. overall, it is a likeable indie film. it is low budget. i thought the writing and editing was good. the points i don't like and hence 2 stars: 1) the cover has nothing to do with the movie. there is no nudity, though the witch is mighty fine looking. in the rating section it does say sexually explicit scenes but there are none. 2) it's full screen, not wide screen. 3) there is no depth to any of the acting. 4) the ending was bad. 5) the visual effects weren't that good. but, saying all that, i still like it somewhat and give it credit for the effort.』
(Not horrible, but bad) 『Most new Lovecraft inspired movies don't adhere to the accepted "canon" created by either Lovecraft and/or Derleth, so I did not expect this film to do so, and I was not disappointed. It is, however, far closer to the original "canon" than the Reanimator films or the Unnameable films. So, I guess this is a "true" modern Lovecraft film.
As for the movie itself, it obviously had a rather small budget. The acting is adequate, but certainly not great. The lead girl is attractive and competent, but hardly a great actress. The story does move along slowly, which is much like a Lovecraft story, and the characters discover each new piece of the puzzle much as Lovecraft's characters did in his better stories. Several times, the dialogue is very stilted, as though the writer is explaining things rather than doing true dialogue. The actors occasionally seem to fall out of character, too.
Still, for all the faults, this is not a terrible film. It has moments of real Lovecraft feeling. For the price, it isn't too terribly expensive, either. (Sexploitation films exploring the world of "lesbianic harmony") 『Any thought that this double-feature from the wacky folks at Something Weird Video is about women in prisons because the first title is "Chained Girls" is dispelled by the second being "Daughters of Lesbos," because this DVD is all about lesbian sexploitation films. "Chained Girls" (1965) is presented by director Joseph P. Mawra as a documentary, narrated by Joel Holt, educating its audience about the secret and mysterious life of the lesbian, their secret haunts, how they have fun, so on and so forth. We learn that lesbians have a secret language, an inherent sense of insecurity, are usually suicidal, and that every dyke is out only for herself. Statistics pop up from time to time on title cards, while in between we see jealous dykes in a battle to the death over a fem (do not worry: you will learn about the different types of lesbians). At the end we are told that lesbianism is caused by such conditions as a neurotic fear of marriage, fear of bearing children in marriage, an unfounded hatred of all men, or hatred for an aggressive dominating mother. It turns out the point of this film is not to show women in their underwear, but rather to inform the audience, because "Only through understanding the facts, can we keep Lesbianism from becoming a serious social problem." I wonder if these women were being told that they were playing lesbians because in some of these scenes except for the narration there is nothing to indicate sexual preference. This is a classic example of an exploitation film, using the trappings of science and education to justifying watching scantily dressed women.
"Daughters of Lesbos" (1968) from director Peter Woodcock is ostensibly a series of vignettes reflecting the weekly meeting of a group of lesbians. Their leader (Linda Boyce), likes to go to bars and tease men before she leaves them high and dry, except this time the guy drugs here, adding insult to injury by adding Spanish Fly to the mix. Helga (Jo Sweet) wants more out of her sex life than her vibrator can provide and meets an accommodating counselor at camp. Maxine (Jackie Richards), "a female stud," is a seducer whose mind functions like a man, and who picks up a flower power hitchhiker (Sue Akers); the two show how much you can accomplish in the front seat of a car. Dominique (Geri Miller) cannot go to sleep until she has had an orgasm, so she thinks back to happy memories of a shower partner, not knowing that she is being watched by this guy who not only looks through the window but puts his head through the window AND the blinds. Of course, he only gets to watch her writhe on her bed while we get to see what she is imagining. The guy ends up attacking her and the Daughters of Lesbos anticipate "I Spit On Your Grave" in their response. This film is also shot in black&white, with the emphasis on black since lighting is always lacking in these types of films. The music is white-hot jazz and you can decide if the trumpet or the saxophone is your preferred brass instrument for accompanying sex. Obviously this is a much more erotic film than the other feature on this DVD, but "Daughters of Lesbos" has some moments in that department, especially compared to the usual SWV offerings.
In addition to the two movies the extras pop up in "The Lair of the Lesbian," starting with a series of "Sappho Shorts": the silent "Lash of the Lesbian"; "Lesbian Apartment Party," where the butches and the fems are painfully obvious and there is a whole lot of cuddling going on before they get down to dancing; "Lesbian Neighbors" get together to drink in their underwear before getting down to it (more dancing); "She-Man Surprise" involves more dancing (in color) and a title that gives away the punch-line; "Lesbian Bikers" has sound and is the obligatory dykes on bikes bit, although they have to get off the bikes to prove the lesbian part; "Lesbian Coffin Sex" is not just about about lesbian coffin sex, but two lesbians having sex in a coffin floating in a pool, complete with an interview with the weird guy who hired the girls so he can watch; "Let's Make Mary Moan" reinforces my working hypothesis that lesbians are not into spanking but that if a woman is spanking another woman it is not really S&M; teh goal of "Outdoor Lesbian Love"(also in color) is not so much to make love but to make sure that view of the camera is unobstructed. This is by far the most graphic bit on the DVD. Be forewarned; a lot of these shorts just suddenly end (which will not matter, because sometime before that point you usually stop really paying attention). A lot of these shorts are accompanied by polka music ("Roll Out the Barrel" is popular), and sometimes there are competing music tracks at the same time, but the obvious conclusion is that the sound of a Wurlizter organ makes everything seem campy.
The other special features are the "Titillating Trailers," for "Chained Girls," "The Girl with the Hungry Eyes" (with girls who have tried everything twice), "The Cats" (with familiar SWV music), "The King" (accompanied by beat poetry), "Make Me a Woman" (a Greek film, which makes sense given Sappho wrote poetry in Greek), "Sappho Darling" (self-professed to be "almost too adult for men," which a screenplay by Academy Award Winner Albert Zugsmith, although I cannot even find an Oscar nomination for the fellow), "That Tender Touch," and "The Wild Roots of Love." Just do not look for too many of these films out there because if SWC does not bring them to DVD, then it just is not going to happen. As is usually the case, the 5-star rating here is for the complete Something Weird Video package. "Chained Girls" is a historical curiosity, that can evoke gales of laughter because of its judgmental proclamations, while "Daughters of Lesbos" betrays its true audience by introducing men into half of the vignettes (and the tacky narration constitutes a clue as well). They sure do not make movies like this anymore, and if it were not for the gang at SWV we would never be introduced to the seamier side of cinema.』
(Great Titles From Something Weird) 『The two main titles on this DVD are both hilarious, particularly the first, 1965's "Chained Girls". This is not a BDSM feature at all, and neither is it claimed to be. It is, instead, a supposed documentary about the "growing menace" of lesbianism. I find it humourous to think that the filmmakers sincerely believed any of the (mis)information presented in this film. The box compares it to Ed Wood's "Glen Or Glenda", and I can see why. There is no sex in this 1965 feature, and very little nudity. It is incredibly silly, and quite funny to those of us who enjoy bad cinema. Directed by Joseph P. Mawra.
A more erotic film is 1968's "Daughters of Lesbos", this one being made to pander to the tastes of certain men. It is a very nearly plotless tale of an organization "dedicated to the proposition that women are superior beings". As if there was ever any doubt. This one contains much more sex and nudity, but much less unintentional comedy than "Chained Girls". "Daughters of Lesbos" was directed by Peter Woodcock, I swear that is the name given.
Also on the disc are 8 "Sappho Shorts", some from the 1930s, as well as a number of trailers. There is also an "Easter Egg" or two for those who wish to search.
All in all, this is a great disc from Something Weird Video, full of the qualities we've come to expect from this company.』

I am still in the process of reading them, but have thumbed through and read clips of each one. These ladies are so funny. The books are irreverent...and in some cases a little too spicy for some...but for the most part, Jill writes the thoughts that I'm sure all of us have had at one time or another. There is no doubt in my mind that she absolutely adores her daughter, but some of the stories she writes are so funny you will cry when you are reading them. I think the greatest part of her books is the fact that we can picture ourselves, or someone near and dear to us, in every situation she writes about.
If you love to laugh...and especially if you started out South of the Mason-Dixon Line...you will absolutely love this book. You will laugh so hard your sides will ache. And please don't blame poor Miss Gillespie--I feel the blame for this lazy concoction lies solely with Browne. The overall plot is boring; just incredibly predictable story-lines, slapped together with a few Southern expressions, some 80s references, a couple of recipes...and the word "sumbitch" gets thrown around all too often. Also, the ending of the book is downright disgusting, especially if you actually think about it for more than three seconds. I won't describe it, not because I care about giving anything away, but because it is vile. I won't say I'm not jealous, that someone has been given so much for doing so little, but again: does she have to gloat about it? Look at Browne's website, where she refuses to give out any of her recipes for free, insisting that everybody buy each one of her "books," along with all her other shoddy merchandise. This on top of the fact that her loyal fans seem to be the ones contributing all the material for her many projects anyway....while she gets the dough. Is that fair? As one other reviewer suggested, just get the book from the library. Heck, you could even photocopy all the precious, valuable recipes and hand them out to all the happy homemakers you know.
