Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Fun starter kit!) 『I received this kit over a month ago. I followed the directions pretty closely, although I wouldn't call myself a green thumb. Everything sprouted but about half of the seedlings didn't make it in the long run. Certain plants seem more hardy: cilantro, mint, oregano, chives and basil all have since been transplanted and are doing well. This is a great, easy way to start herbs from seed and the tray is reusable. It also comes with more of the starter "pods" than will actually fit in the tray, so you can always try a second batch later after you have transplanted the first batch to larger containers.』
(As advertised) 『The kit arrived VERY quickly, and I got planting right away. The little peat pellets are a very clever way to start seedlings. I'll be using them more in the spring to start my regular garden. The instructions vary for each different type of seed, and most of my seeds sprouted quickly. There was one that didn't come up, but there is plenty of additional starter pellets and seed to do a second, and maybe even a third planting, so no worries. The little seedlings are growing every day! It's pretty fun ;-)』

First, you have to soak the seeds. Have you ever tried getting tiny, tiny seeds out of water and then to try burying them in small "go go gadget" growing pellets?
It's hard. I am not dumb but felt that way in trying to get this together. I just hope I did it right and that my plants grow! We'll find out in 3 weeks!』

Perhaps unknown to many on this side of the Atlantic until Scotland's Susan Boyle on Britain's Got Talent introduced her own amazing voice by saying she aspired to a career like Elaine's, this album is a great way to get acquainted with Elaine's talent. I've also ordered Susan Boyle's debut album I Dreamed A Dream and salute Nana Mouskouri The Romance of Nana Mouskouri as another world diva whose amazing voice and multi-lingual song stylings deserve a fan base here in the U.S. Sweet Memories is a wonderful addition to any music library.』

While the value added items of an "enhanced CD" may be important to some people I found it to be a pain. I was forced to Rip the songs, losing quality in the process, to another format to save them to my computer so that I could use the CD in my car. I wish this album had been released in both the enhanced and the regular format. I gave it five stars because of the incredible songs on the album. If I were asked about the "enhanced CD" experience I would have only given it a rating of two stars.』

"Push" is a beautiful love song and it's sad to hear that her marriage recently broke up as I can only assume she wrote this song about her husband. (Songs from the underground EP) 『This is really good stuff from Linkin Park. Though I already had a few of these songs in my collection, I really appreciate the selection and the composition of the 8-song e.p..This music is as cool and slick as anything from Linkin Park yet.』
(Best release since Hybrid Theory.) 『I'm what one might call a closet Linkin Park fan. I loved Hybrid Theory for years, liked Meteora all right for a while, and haven't even bothered picking up Minutes to Midnight after I listened to a friend's copy and didn't think much of it.
Then comes Songs from the Underground. I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much when I bought this, but I was clinging to the hope that some of the older demo tracks might be good.
They're more than good. "Qwerty" is possibly the most aggressive song ever written by Linkin Park, the two live tracks are outstanding, and (I kid you not) Chester lays down some Layne Staley-style vocals on "Part of Me."
The only negative thing I can say about this EP is that the instrumental track "Sold My Soul to Yo Mama" is pretty boring. I prefer the hidden instrumental at the end of "Part of Me" to this track.
Please, Linkin Park, revert to your old ways and give us more songs like "Qwerty" and "And One." Great EP, pick it up pronto.』

Each story (there are 5 short ones, total less than 30 minutes)is preceded by a gentle song, and the vignettes are sweet and calm. Spot has fun with his parents, his friends, his toys, in the garden, and at storytime. Lots of examples of consideration for others and a nice attitude toward one's parents, presented quietly to make this a great bedtime or naptime prelude.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excellent movie - Help it get to DVD!) 『Sweet Hostage first aired in 1975 as a TV movie. Sheen's energetic, lyrical performance captured the imagination of a bookish 12 year old who had a few things in common with Linda Blair's lonely tomboy, Doris Mae. The movie engendered in me a life long love of the well spoken word, a fondness for the poetry Blake and Coleridge, and a terrific crush on Martin Sheen.
There are plenty of other reviews here which tell you more about the quality of this touching movie - read them. And if you think you'd like to see Sweet Hostage (which is notoriously hard to find on VHS and doesn't seem to exist legitimately on DVD) or like me you just need to own a copy of this movie so you can watch it again and again; You can vote cast your vote on the TMC website to have Sweet Hostage transferred to DVD. (Welcome to Xanadu, Christabel) 『Here's an example of the small art film that used to be made for TV. Thoughtful&moving, it's a reminder of a time when madness was a symbol for freedom&imagination, rather than serial killing&other horrors. No, it's not completely "realistic" -- but that complaint is utterly beside the point. It's about breaking free of the everyday world, stepping outside the social roles imposed on us, and realizing more of our potential. It's also a tender love story, one that certainly wouldn't be allowed on TV today! Martin Sheen is excellent, as might be expected, but Linda Blair holds her own with him. It's a shame she didn't get more roles like this one; her acting career might have been very different. And if the story gets a touch too precious at times, that's forgivable. I'd much rather see a film take that risk, instead of simply playing it safe.
Like previous reviewers, I'd love to see this released on DVD, preferably with commentary by both Sheen&Blair. Until then, cherish that fragile VHS tape! You won't see a story like this one being made today, and more's the pity. Recommended for anyone with a dreamer's heart&imagination.』

Seriously folks, don't buy anything put out by this company, Jef Films, they've been stealing films left and right, including several well-known titles, and are simply killing any potential sales of the titles to legitimate companies who will treat the films right. I am appalled that this currently (at the time of this writing) is ranked at #7,846 on the Amazon DVD charts, which means in terms of this niche market it's a success. Shame on all of you who bought this disc when you could have just burned your VHS tape to a DVD-R for $2 and still helped ensure that the film will be treated properly in the future!! (masterpiece, the greatest movie of the 80s) 『Holy God, this is truly a work of art. Danny Steinmann is an underrated master of cinema. He has done some of the best film ever made. Friday the 13th part V is one of them. This movie got everything, sexy Linda Blair doing nude scenes, plenty of action, an awesome soundtrack. This flick deserves to be on dvd with plenty of extras. Watch Linda Blair as she goes against a gang of nasty bad guys and try to avenge her sister's rape. Classic stuff here everyone! It 's a crying shame that this movie is out of print. Try to find it and you will love it, at least if you have good taste in movies.

(meet Danny Steinmann) 『[good things] It was a great revenge flick, with a great performance by Linda Blair. Linnea Quigley had a supporting non-speaking role that she did an awesome job with, plus she was absolutely adorable in this movie. It was a typical 80's movie, and since it was done by an ex-porn director (Steinmann) it had that element as well, alot of gratuitus nudity and bush shots.
[the bad] The movie seemed to a bit too sleazy, turning it into more of a softcore movie than anything else. Could have used more blood.
[final thoughts] I think this movie was more an exploitation film than anything else. There was a bit too much nudity, it seemed like scenarios were invented just to fit nudity in the mix (i.e. the fight in the shower). I still like this movie alot though, Linda Blair and Linnea Quigley do an excellent job despite the lack-lustre directing and screen writing. There are about a handful of scenes where you can see the boom-mic come down int he shot-- oops. 』

It has more spirit and drive than Linda's "Chained Heat", and the kids' inter-relationships and tough talks with the school principal are cynically amusing, but the much-discussed rape scene is extremely nasty, as is the sequence with the girl on the bridge. Suddenly these hot-shot punks become murderous, psychotic thugs--yet the tone of the picture never changes. The images are very disturbing, the violence bordering on realistic, but the director keeps it all hopping mad--like a nihilistic cartoon. "High Drama" is more like it, and there are clear implications for morality and ethical thought. It was regarded as quite daring and sexually tinged for its time.
Nonetheless, the "Negroes" in this film are portrayed in a dated and stereotyped way, while other ethnic slurs abound. I believe this material is of historical value rather than a deliberate attempt to denigrate others. In any case, anything by Tennessee Williams is guaranteed to be frightening, ourageous and entertaining. Recommended.』

My date's name was Darlene and this was the only time I paid more attention to the movie than to her. The Baptists had the film taken down the next day, but my ideas about female beauty were set for many years to come. It was also condemned by the Catholic Church, which made it a "must see" film. Carroll Baker was known for her role in "GIANT." The late Karl Malden and co-star Eli Wallach are great. It is a campy film showing the deep south in early America. Very entertaining, even in black&white. I wish it was in widescreen, but it isn't. Elia Kazan (East of Eden) directed it.』

Tennessee Williams' Southis a 1973 documentary featuring some marvelous observations from Williams, as he holds court for filmmaker Harry Rasky. It also has long scenes from his plays, enacted by good folks such as Maureen Stapleton, Colleen Dewhurst, and Burl Ives. (Healthier than the packets!) 『Despite Splenda's "no Calorie" claim for its packets -- it is not true but still legal for them to say so (shame on the FDA) because the packets are "less than" 5! calories.
And where do those 5 calories come from? Sugar!
Specifically, dextrose and maltodextrin -- in that order -- sucralose is last-- the product that makes Splenda a low calorie sweetener. The packets are 95% sugar.
Dextrose is one main component of actual sugar (a product that many body-builders consume after a weight work-out to restore their glycogen stores); Maltodextrin is sugar made from starch such as corn, wheat or potato. (The wheat version can be dangerous for coeliacs.)
Splenda puts Dextrose and Maltodextrin in the Splenda packs to give it bulk. The sucralose is so minuscule people would have a hard time dealing with it.
But now there is the Splenda minis -- tiny little tablets with the same amount of sucralose and tiny amounts of lactose -- another sugar.
Far superior, in my mind.
I realize that many people feel that any artificial sweetener is dangerous and I respect that. Personally, I go organic with just about everything I eat -- but my issues with sugar are sufficiently problematic that for me, it justifies using this one non-natural ingredient.
Sucralose (the sweetener in Splenda) is different from Aspartame (Equal ) or Saccharin (Sweet n' Low) (Both products also use Dextrose and maltodextrin for bulk in their packets.)
Whereas both Saccharin and Aspartame are chemical creations -- Sucralose is actually sugar with some of its hydrogen atoms replaced with chlorine atoms so the body can't absorb it and it just passes through. That's why it tastes so much like sugar -- it is essentially sugar chemically modified.
There is no persuasive evidence yet of sucralose being harmful to humans without consuming massive quantities-- but honestly, sugar is such a problem for me and sugar has its own dangerous health risks that I was willing to use Equal even with the known health risks. I was happy when Splenda arrived.
It is nigh unto impossible to find the ingredients in the packets of Splenda on its own site -- which shows how hard they are working to disguise the fact that their packets are 95% sugar.
However you will find the information buried in their FAQ.
From their website: "Why are the ingredients maltodextrin and dextrose in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products?
"Sucralose, the no-calorie sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. Like other tabletop sweeteners, the granulated and packet products contain small amounts of carbohydrate (less than 1 gram per serving) for consistent sweetening and to provide volume. These bulking ingredients are dextrose (packets) and maltodextrin (packets and granulated). However, the bulking agents provide so few calories per serving that the FDA allows the SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products to be called no-calorie sweeteners, because they provide less than five calories per serving."
For shame on the FDA -- allowing companies to bury such information and not be forced to disclose in a clear and unobscured fashion. The FDA has weird criteria for making its decisions. I could go on with quite a list of what I consider ill-thought-out decisions that the FDA has made over the last 40 years.

When I was recently asked to make desserts for a fundraiser for a non-profit organization (I do the baking for free and only get reimbursed for the ingredients) I decided to use recipes from this book because I needed to make small desserts. I planned 7 desserts for about 100 people (a 2 day baking marathon in my small home kitchen) and selected 5 of the recipes from Carole's book: Sour Cream Cupcakes, Lemon Tartlets, Madeleines, Filo Triangles, and Cardamom Butter Cookies. I made few adjustments to some of the recipes (for example the filo triangles I filled only with a tiny scoop of Nutella, in the cupcakes I replaced the cinnamon with vanilla, Madeleines I made with finally chopped crystallized ginger and in the lemon tartlets I replaced the meringue with fresh blueberries because of transporting logistics), but in general I followed all the instructions in the recipes.
The desserts were a huge hit and I want to complement Carole on her book. I found the sections on "'keeping" and "making a change" very useful too. I liked the overall selection of the recipes in the book and will certainly try to make many more.
There was only a slight issue for me with listing all the ingredients in one list and not separating them into a list for a dough or batter and for a topping or frosting. Couple times I put the whole amount (of sugar for instance) in the batter or dough and later as I was following the steps did I realize my mistake. Luckily I tested the recipes in small batches before I made a bigger amount. Once I figured the organization of the ingredients I carefully read each recipe before making it (which should always be done anyway) and noted on the margins the correct amounts. But this issue still did not detract from the overall value of the book.
Carole's book will be on my Christmas shopping list for all my friends who share my passion of baking.

Most recipes use a limited number of ingredients, and ingredients which are widely available -- for instance, she uses dried coconut instead of fresh baby coconut meat. The equipment is also simpler. She makes ice cream without an ice cream maker. Many recipes use a personal blender instead of a high speed blender. There is a dehydrator section but it is limited. Almost every recipe is illustrated with a beautiful color photograph. I could see myself making just about anything in the book, and the recipes I have tried have been delicious. I have really been surprised by how useful this little cookbook has been.』

Well, maybe if you are under 12 and want to be an interior designer someday it might be interesting enough. The game play is very easy with basic graphics that look like something from 10 years ago. Three cartoonish characters help you "build" your design. All you have to do is choose pre-existing furnishings within a budget according to your clients desires. That isn't too difficult when there are only three style choices to begin with: Asian, Country and Retro. Once you have added a few items to the room, which is just two walls, by the way, you then "build" the design. Three workers do it all for you. You just click each one then have them build a lamp or whatever. They get tired and you give them coffee, then need a tool, you get it, etc. Not exactly rocket science. And, who needs a level to build a lamp? As I said, it is probably good enough for preteens, but even they will quickly tire of the uninspired graphics. Aside from the game play aspect, I had constant problems with the game crashing and/or freezing every time it goes back to the neighborhood screen. The game isn't listed yet on the eGames site, so there's no tech support either. Not that I really care since I was bored with it by the second crash anyway. It holds a lot of items to bring, and he was very comfortable in it, the windows were perfect for him to see us riding next to him! It's a really nice color, and easy for cars to see. It's light weight, and my daughter-in-law had no problems riding him around... and she doesn't ride that often herself.
I did sew a bag to put it in for carrying it around, and storing it. Helps protect the plastic - and made handles to hang it in the garage.
