I read a review which stated that someone had to spend 6 hours to assemble this table, I think the key is not to apply your brains while assembling these devices and to rely on the pictures, it would make your life very easy, also the table is pretty stable, has a nice shine and once I wiped it clean it looks pretty good and I am pretty sure it would last many years and I probably would be able to resell it in two years time ;-), I would highly recommend this product and seller both.』 『

(Wonderful collection of big band music) 『My stepfather adored big band music. When he recently passed away, my mother wanted to play his collection of WWII-era music at his memorial service, but everything he had was on cassette. We pored over the available compilations and settled on this one, which turned out to be a wonderful choice. The songs are performed by the original artists, the sound quality is excellent, and the selection contained quite a number of my stepfather's favorite songs and made my mother very happy. Some of the collections out there contain quite a few tracks that have been re-recorded by unknown artists, or padded with obscure or down-tempo songs. Every track on this compilation is strong, plus it's less expensive than many others. We were quite pleased with our choice.』

With due respect to his excellent 3-star review, I must disagree with Paul Bryan's comment "If you want to get as close as you can to the experience of being right there in Carnegie Hall, you'll instead want the Columbia Masterworks version.".
The Masterworks version did make me feel like I was right there, but the performance was a boxing match not a big band concert. I was being slugged in the nose by a snap, crackle or pop every 10 seconds. Exhausting listening.
It is with this Jasmine CD that I finally feel connected to the thrill that flooded Carnegie Hall that night, and with my childhood memories of my father playing this LP over and over, an LP that sounded far superior to the Masterworks CD. That's the recollection of a 12 year old kid, but the Masterworks version did not take me home. This Jasmine version does. Exciting listening!

Sheen's energetic, lyrical performance captured the imagination of a bookish 12 year old who had a few things in common with Linda Blair's lonely tomboy, Doris Mae. The movie engendered in me a life long love of the well spoken word, a fondness for the poetry Blake and Coleridge, and a terrific crush on Martin Sheen.
There are plenty of other reviews here which tell you more about the quality of this touching movie - read them. And if you think you'd like to see Sweet Hostage (which is notoriously hard to find on VHS and doesn't seem to exist legitimately on DVD) or like me you just need to own a copy of this movie so you can watch it again and again; You can vote cast your vote on the TMC website to have Sweet Hostage transferred to DVD. If enough people vote; perhaps next time a fan does a search on "Linda Blair", or "Martin Sheen" Amazon will direct us right to the DVD offering for "Sweet Hostage "

Thoughtful&moving, it's a reminder of a time when madness was a symbol for freedom&imagination, rather than serial killing&other horrors. No, it's not completely "realistic" -- but that complaint is utterly beside the point. It's about breaking free of the everyday world, stepping outside the social roles imposed on us, and realizing more of our potential. It's also a tender love story, one that certainly wouldn't be allowed on TV today! Martin Sheen is excellent, as might be expected, but Linda Blair holds her own with him. It's a shame she didn't get more roles like this one; her acting career might have been very different. And if the story gets a touch too precious at times, that's forgivable. I'd much rather see a film take that risk, instead of simply playing it safe.
Like previous reviewers, I'd love to see this released on DVD, preferably with commentary by both Sheen&Blair. Until then, cherish that fragile VHS tape! You won't see a story like this one being made today, and more's the pity. Recommended for anyone with a dreamer's heart&imagination.』

Never met anybody else here or there who saw it; only saw it that once; not a subject that I have any particular interest in; and, by the way, am really, really bad at noticing or remembering pop culture/media stuff. But this one little drama has stuck with me so well that I've thought of it 5 or 6 times a year for 30-plus years. I still remember individual shots and lines from it. --Since I never saw it again I have no idea whether it's all that great or not, where it stands in cinematic history etc., but I think it's worth presenting this as evidence that it has something to offer: it penetrated one normally dim little mind so well as to be literally unforgettable. --Another point: in h.s. we were told that Upton Sinclair had changed American history w/ The Jungle. I guarantee that no one you show this to will ever slough off the topic of migrant workers again.』

Bob Hoskins, Imelda Staunton, Maggie Smith, Ian McKellan, and a very young Daniel Radcliffe are only some of the gifted actors plying their trade to bring the classic story to life.
While casting is strong, the quality of the written adaptation suffers as it pares down Dickens' tome in all of the wrong places. This is undoubtedly due to the production being a miniseries rather than a full-blown film. Still, the demands of brevity which a miniseries imposes were met much more successfully in "Bleak House," another adaptation of a famously lengthy Dickens saga. To give examples of storytelling shortcomings in this production, Uriah Heep is shorn of most of his storyline, though the magnetic oiliness of the character still comes through in a remarkable performance by Nicholas Lyndhurst. Additionally, the Murdstones, who form a brilliant Alpha and Omega thematic line for David in the book are completely forgotten in the second half of this miniseries.
Also featuring a charming Ian MacNiece as the simpleminded and wise Mr. Dick, this production of "David Copperfield" retains a hearty intelligence which mostly overcomes a poorly adapted screenplay.』

She's one of the few perfect spintos that comes along once in a while. Placido is great, as always; very at home in the Verdi repertoire. Chernov and Plishka add to the UH-mazingness of voices. My only problem is the set/production...it's just not my favorite and I got bored with it.』
(Stunning Verdi) 『This 1993 production on DVD introduced me to the greatness that is Stiffelio, now numbered among my most favorite operas. Its tunes can be as irresistible as any but this is a piece of dramatic theater in the line of Otello. And here we have that masterful Otello, Domingo, giving us a searing portrayal of Stiffelio. Devoted to his wife, he is soon torn by doubts, then faced with the undeniable reality of her adultery. Watching him try to cope with this unalterable fact is heartbreaking, frightening. Domingo perfectly embodies the disbelief, anguish and rage. Your typical Italian character would now feel quite justified in dispatching one or more people in revenge. But no! Stiffelio, the minister, must teach Stiffelio, the man, to find forgiveness in his heart (did Otello ever countenance such a thought!). A heart that, though wounded, still loves dearly. He learns a meekness that is most touching. These latter scenes touch rare emotional depths and it is almost unbearable to witness the broken couple's struggle through the aftermath. But in the end forgiveness does rise above the tragedy. An unusual, beautiful, powerful opera.
The production, sets and filming all serve the opera perfectly. This is one the most striking DVDs I have seen. The atmosphere is sober and traditional yet there is warmth and gaiety. Décor somewhat severe yet shot through with light. Regular and orderly but comfortable, even rich. Each set is simply stunning in its beauty and appropriateness.
This is a great performance, the sum rising to be even greater than its parts. Those parts themselves being great assets- Domingo, Levine, sets, everything just right... But Chernov as Stankar almost steals the show. Straight and rigid in his German uniform (with Iron Cross) he is the picture of soldierly pride. Stern, honorable and unyielding yet his pride finds a match in his tender love of his daughter (ah! this is what Verdi does best, no?). Chernov is most convincing in this lovely role of conflicting emotions. What colors he finds in his arias and duets with his wayward daughter! He was having a splendid evening- he knew it, the audience knew it and responded uproariously, and I feel it every time I watch. Bravo!
The highest praise is also due to DG for their usual excellent presentation of these operas at the Met. Convenient menu; subtitles in Italian (some companies give any language but the original!) English, German, French, Spanish, Chinese; beautiful packaging including a very nice booklet with titles, synopsis, notes on this performance and several photos (I especially prize the full-page one of Domingo kneeling on the leaf-strewn stage in Act 2- just when he comes to grips with the truth about his wife and is about to pick up a sword to exact vengeance...) 』

Whether or not this is considered major or minor Verdi, the Met proved that it is an opera that can stir deeper emotions and speak to the complexities of human responses. As pointed out by the others, Domingo, Sweet and Chernov, in the lead roles, were simply outstanding both in song and action, the supporting cast did all that could be asked of them, Levine and the Met orchestra demonstrated the success of the conductor's effort to make it among the best in the world, the video production was excellent. A word should be said with regard to scenic design in this day of minimalism: the traditional approach here, measurably enhanced the power of the production as, it should be mentioned, did the costuming. All in all, a very classy addition to the collections of opera on DVD.』
(Stiffelio review) 『I invited friends over to watch Stiffelio. It was a grand experience. The singing voices were wonderful and the staging was great. There wasn't a dry eye in the room when the opera ended. Very, Very moving and I would recommend this production to any opera lover.』
(I was overwhelmed) 『Stiffelio is a GREAT opera. Lost for close to a century, it has been slow in making its way into the standard repertoire, but productions such as this one should further its cause as well as its reputation. This is frankly one of the best opera productions I've ever seen. Every facet is top of the line, from the orchestra to the singers to the stage production to the video direction. Prepare to be overwhelmed. And, if you've never seen or heard Stiffelio before, prepare to welcome a new opera into the canon of Verdi masterpieces.
Stiffelio, about a Protestant minister who learns that his wife has cheated on him while he was away, has a story that is closer to verismo opera than most of the other operas of that time in that it deals with regular people rather than kings and queens, gods and goddesses. Like verismo, the emotion is often pushed to a level that is melodramatic, even larger than life. Yet even those moments have the core of truth to them, because Stiffelio's characters are never less, or more, than human, defined as they are by human weakness. This is a very powerful opera, Bergmanesque(as in Ingmar) in that it deals with the conflict between the spiritual life and the earthly one. This juxtaposition is never more beautifully realized than at the end of act two, where Stiffelio has just learned of his wife's indiscretion and is prepared to kill her but is stayed by the voices of the congregation emanating from the church, singing about forgiveness. I was overpowered, and I'm not even a religious person! Then again, neither was Verdi, yet the great humanist was able to put aside his anticlericalism and create an astonishing vision of a man finding redemption through faith. This has always been a Verdian specialty, scenes where private agonies clash with public responsibilities. Probably the greatest example comes late in act three of Otello, where Otello has just finished spying on Iago and Cassio and is tormented with jealousy and thoughts of violence just as the horns signal the approach of the heralds. Trust me when I say that the scene I just described from Stiffelio is in that same league.
The music of this opera, which was written between Luisa Miller and Rigoletto, shows the composer's progress. There is very little standard recitative, it's almost all through composed, with fewer arias and more concerted music than the norm, creating an undeviating dramatic flow. Many scenes show the richness in orchestration that would characterize his later operas. Also, this is one of the few Verdi operas where the tenor character is the most demanding role. The uniqueness of Stiffelio might tempt some to write it off as a curiosity, yet the power of the story and the passion of the music demand that it be taken seriously as one of Verdi's most beautifully realized triumphs.
"Taken seriously" certainly applies to this production. The commitment of all involved is palpable. James Levine's orchestra plays with an extraordinary Verdian fervor and flair, yet is never less than subtle in the more pensive, nuanced moments. This lesser known score couldn't be in more capable hands. Under Levine, Stiffelio becomes an emotional powerhouse, it sounds like an opera that belongs in the same class as the more oft performed Verdi masterworks of that period. On to the singers. Placido Domingo gives a performance of Otelloesque intensity. Here is a singer who cares more about dramatic authenticity than strict vocal beauty, and his voice, while lovely, is also savage and tumultuous, just like his acting. Domingo has always excelled in the more angst-ridden roles, Don Jose, Cannio, Otello, the difference here being that Stiffelio offers an opportunity to explore the dawning of wisdom as well, and redemption, and Domingo accepts the challenge. I wasn't familiar with Sharon Sweet, our Lina, prior to watching this. I understand her career at the Met was shortlived. Still, it's easy to see why she demanded so much enthusiasm during her brief period in the spotlight, her singing is explosive yet also beautiful and, dare I say it, sweet. She is also a compelling dramatic actress, her wayward, fatalistic wife, the catalyst for this tragedy, is never less than a sympathetic character. Vladimir Chernov matches the tenor and soprano's intensity as Stankar, Lina's father, the tragic counterpart to Stiffelio, his foil if you will, who yields to the same impulse to violence that initially drives Stiffelio, unlike Stiffelio he only yields to the power of forgiveness after sating his need for bloodshed. Paul Plishka has a smaller role as Jorg, but no less important, since he functions as Stiffelio's conscience, his voice of reason. His stoic compassion is mesmerizing. Regarding Giancarlo del Monaco's production, this is an advertisement for tradtional productions when they are done well. The dark, brooding sets, while effective at setting the mood of the piece, are also light on abstraction, on symbols, they allow the singers and the music to impart the opera's profundity. The settings are elaborate and in their own way as essential to the performance's success as the singers and orchestra. Brian Large's video direction is as polished and cinematic and as unintrusive as ever, using closeups during moments of extreme emotional distress but also pulling back his camera when necessary to allow the viewer to take it all in. I've never seen a Met broadcast look better.
One final note. I persist in objecting to this opera's overture. I don't approve of cuts in most instances, particularly in operas that are under two hours, but if I were ever to consider making a cut to any score, this overture would have to be one of the first I would consider. For one thing, Stiffelio is a short, intimate opera, close to a chamber piece in some respects, so a ten minute overture seems inappropriate. Second, although the overture does use motifs from the actual score, the texture and pacing of the piece are too jaunty and therefore a poor match for the subject matter and mood of the opera itself. It sounds more like something Donizetti would have written for one of his lighter operas, it has a standard bel canto feel to it whereas Stiffelio is one of those operas that does its best to break free of bel canto conventions. Basically, Stiffelio's overture is unworthy of the man who just prior to that wrote the brilliant prelude to Luisa Miller and the stirring overture to La Battaglia di Legnano. More than that, it is unworthy of the opera. Despite all that, Levine and his orchestra give a spirited reading. I'm certainly not about to allow a weak overture spoil what is otherwise a beautiful opera and a magnificent production and an overwhelming viewing experience. (Pricey, but worth it) 『Most dvds in this genre run the price gambit of between $12 and $15. This dvd was $18 but the extra cost was worth it. Run time is 2 hours and longer if you count extras. All the girls are exceptional. I particuarly enjoyed Memphis Monroe, Kenna Valentine, Danielle Trixie and Autumn Westin. They have those perfect "kitties" you usually see on FTV girls like Allison Angel, and they have the beauty to boot. A wide range of material kept this one interesting unlike girls gone wild which I get bored with easily. The small centerfold that came with the dvd was a nice surprise too, never seen anything like that from say playboy for example. I put these on par with titles from companies like dream girls, which I'm a big fan of.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A gift from the Goddess of Mercy.) 『Like the famously smoky Lapsang Souchong, Oolong tea comes from mist-enshrouded Wuyi Mountains in the northwestern corner of China's Fujian Province (north of Guangdong [Canton] Province), whose greatest tourist draw besides its mountains is its coast line on the Taiwan Straits, and where tea has been grown at least since the Sung Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279).
In terms of production, Oolong tea takes a middle position between the fully fermented black teas (Darjeeling, Assam, Ceylon, Kenya, Lapsang Souchong, etc.) and the unfermented green teas (Sencha, Maccha, Gyokuro, Hougicha/Hojicha, Gunpowder Green), in that it is part-fermented or "brown" tea. Its long, dark leaves' fermentation is stopped when they are about 30% red and 70% green, after which they are rubbed to promote their aroma and texture and then dried over charcoal.
Ti Quan (Kuan) Yin Oolong takes its name from the Goddess of Mercy (Quan Yin), whose statues can often be found in front of Buddhist temples. Quan Yin is a bodhisattva, i.e. a person who has earned the right to leave this world of misery and enter nirvana, but who has volunteered to stay on earth and assist others in their quest for enlightenment. Legend has it that in a village whose temple was adorned by an iron ("ti") statue of the goddess, one night Quan Yin appeared in a local farmer's dream and guided him to a cave behind the temple. There, she told him, he would find a treasure he was to tend and share with others. The treasure he did find when he went to the cave the very next morning turned out to be a small tea plant, which he took home and nursed. When it had grown to its full size, its leaves produced this particularly aromatic tea with the delicate fragrance of fruits and spices and a rich, golden color. As he had been bidden by the goddess, the farmer shared it with his neighbors, and he also dedicated it to Quan Yin in grateful appreciation of her gift.

Normally I don't like to start in the middle of a series, but I had no trouble with this one. I liked the town, I liked the main character Jeanette, the secondary story about Mary Vaugn was good, the love interest (Tom) was OK, and Jeanette's friends were very well-written. What I didn't like was the hokey stupid over-emphasis on the Christmas festival, the forced angst on the part of Tom about his miserable childhood Christmases, and the way Tom&Jeannette just kind of decided to get married after all even though they still had some major issues over their different approach to their careers and where they would live. The difficulty Jeannette had with Christmas was explained well and brought to a proper end, but Tom's situation was just dumb and his parents were mean one minute, then nice&quirky, then mean again, then cute and quirky. The last part of the book basically set up Tom and Jeannette to eventually get a divorce after having major fight after major fight since he never bothers to consult her on any of his big decisions. I didn't like him very much. I don't think I'd recommend this book, to be honest, when there are so many better ones out there. I can't say it was bad, but I had enough problems with it that it won't be on my forever shelf.』

(Best book in my collection) 『This book has the best dessert recipes I've tried from over a dozen books in my collection! I agree with prior reviewers - some of the recipes take quite a bit of preparation, and you must have certain tools to do them well - for example, a very good scale, an understanding of how to measure (both dry and liquid), and the money necessary to prepurchase some ingredients that you will not easily find from local stores; you will likely be forced to use the Internet to purchase things like Irish Moss and other ingredients. Many recipes take more than a day of prep, and then some post-time like gelling. It's not likely that you will make and serve these things in the same day. But many of the desserts are well worth the prep and wait time!
This being said, the desserts are amazing - the best I've tried. Having tried 5-6 so far, they are incredible. You will not believe that they aren't using cooked ingredients - the structure and tastes are very well done (ex: lemon merengue, apple pie, several of the cakes). The accompanying photos help a lot to see how the creation might look if you followed it the authors way, you can, of course, mix things up and change the appearance to suit your own guests.
I consider this the book to use when one has company over and you are looking to put on a quality meal/show. While we do use it occasionally for everyday eating, it's a lot of work to throw it together for a family of 3. This is the type of book that will convert people to the raw food way in a most enjoyable way.
I am still looking for that 'chocolate chip cookie recipe' to die for. This book does not have one that rivals the best baked ones I am used to. Might have to create one and send it in... ;)』

This book is worthy of the man. You learn about his childhood in Detroit, then down in Georgia, then back in Detroit. He gets his nickname when the person who sees his fight fight proclaims that he is as sweet as sugar.
He beat many great fighters on the way up, including 4 wins over Jake LaMotta, but he doesn't get a crack at the title until 1946, when he wins a decision over hard punching Tommy Bell.
Robinson had fast hands, and a powerful punch, particularly the left hook. He knocks out Jimmy Doyle in a 1947 title fight. Doyle dies the next day from injuries sustained in the fight. Robinson was deeply affected by this. He became more involved with charities, and he may have held back his big punches more often in fights where he was winning from that point on.
Robinson's battles with LaMotta (including the epic 6th battle on 2-14-51 and his fights with Fritzie Zivic, Henry Armstrong, Carmen Basilio, Joey Maxim, Gene Fullmer and more are beautifully and accurately described.
You also feel like you are on the streets of Harlem and Manhattan as Sugar Ray hobnobs with the jazz greats and the famous New Yorkers of his time. I also appreciated his stand on refusing to put on boxing exhibitions for segregated audiences.
Robinson, for all his love of the nightlife, was a deeply spiritual man, often spending time alone with God in churches. His heart was broken when he got divorced from Edna Mae, but he married Millie, who loved her prizefighter to the end.
One of the more touching parts of the book was Sugar Ray's friendship with Mel Dick. The small boy idolized Robinson. He took the subway everyday into Manhattan to watch Robinson train. One day, Sugar Ray said "Who are you?" He said "I'm Mel." Robinson said "Why are you here?" "To watch you train." "Why?" Because I love you."
Sugar Ray tousled the boys hair, and they became friends for life. He was best man for Mel's wedding, and Mel was there right up until the prizefighter's death.
I hope this gives you a taste of how good this book is, and how great Sugar Ray was.』

I was not interested in any of that.) Maybe one day the book I'm waiting for will appear.』

(Sweet As Sugar) 『As a child of the 60's I grew up idolizing Muhammad Ali. It was good to read a well-written biography of the boxer that he idolized. In addition to the fights, it was interesting to learn about how Sugar Ray Robinson fit into and rose above the racial dynamics of his times.』
(Author has grating style, but worth it for fight fans.) 『I used to watch Friday Night Fights sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon and Gillette, so many of the names in SWEET THUNDER: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF SUGAR RAY ROBINSON are quite familiar, especially Carmen Basilio, Gene Fullmer, and Bobo Olson, all of whom Sugar Ray fought at one time or another.
Sugar Ray fought in almost two hundred fights with a 173-19 record along with six draws. He fought until he was forty-three with a two year hiatus to try to make it in show business. He sometimes fought with only a week to prepare. If he wasn't pound-for-pound the greatest, he was in the top five.
Wil Haygood gives us a good look at fight action, including the Raging Bull fights (He fought LaMotta six times) and Sugar Ray's attempt to dethrone Joey Maxim for the light heavyweight title, where he lost on a TKO, ostensibly because of the heat in the ring. But that's one of the main objections I have about the book. Haygood doesn't spend enough time describing ring action. He's more concerned with sociological implications. We see Ray entering the military during WWII (and also going AWOL); we see him as the proprietor of a Harlem nightclub and barber shop. We see him trying to make it as a tap dancer and MC. Another drawback is Haygood emphasis on pink Cadillacs, fur coats and jewelry dripping from Robinson's wives. And there's too much stilted and flowery language. This sort of thing: "She was quietly beautiful. She was the kind of woman who slipped into places. Her voice was soft and her stature regal." Then, for some reason, Haygood includes anecdotes, and nothing much new, about Lena Horne, Miles Davis, and Langston Hughes, despite the fact that they Ray barely new them. I wanted more Kid Gaviland and Harry Greb.
Towards the end of the book, Haygood dispenses with the trivia and provides extensive detail on Robinson's relationship with deprived kids. After a failed attempt at making in the movies (He was in "The Detective" with Frank Sinatra) he spent the remainder of his life building the Sugar Ray Robinson Youth Foundation. Despite Haygood grating prose style, this was an enjoyable book for me; I knew many of the fighters mentioned and had actually seen some of the fights on TV. There's also a short sequence where Sugar Ray is asked to manage the then Cassius Clay. Ray turned him down; he was too weird.
