(love it!) 『our family loves this product! my mother suffers from carpal tunnel in her wrists and is unable to vacuum as much as she would like (she's a clean freak and accepting of it). our roomba (now renamed rosalita, after rosie from the jetsons) does a great job cleaning three tiled rooms with alternating rugs and plenty of furniture to bump into. the roomba is obviously not able to get every corner but it does a great job trying. she's full to the brim every time we empty the container of dust! we run rosalita on a schedule twice a week, before and after weekends, and we don't wear shoes in our home and she still comes back with a full bin of dirt every time. its amazing how much dirt appears in the course of a few days despite our home being as clean as it is. the scheduling is very convenient as shes cleans and returns to base (under the couch out of sight) for charging without any interaction from us. we just have to remember to empty her out at the end of the day.
i have a few complaints that are mild importance to the overall functionality of the product. the spinning (detachable) brushes that peak out from under the right front to reach hard to reach corners break off in a matter of a few months time. the replacement ones are too expensive to sanely purchase again and again. we have opted to just leave the spinning brush off.
my second problem is that though the device slows down before it makes contact with furniture, its still plenty capable of denting or scratching your furniture over time. we didnt notice this at first but over time all of our furniture has black marks at 3 inches from the ground all around the house. there is an easy solution to this, although i wish it was built into the product design. i read this in other reviews and chose to ignore it but i highly SUGGEST THIS. just add some adhesive padding to the entire outside of the device (being careful not to block any of the sensors). this has pretty much solved the scratch and bumps problem.
overall we are very satisfied with the product and i always recommend it to friends. it has come to virtually replace our home vacuum which i didnt think would happen at all. this little guy has exceeding our expectations.』

I read some reviews where people mentioned the Looj tipping over or not working very well. I just think you have to have reasonable expectations. It's not a 35-pound powerhouse. It's plastic and light. You'll want to keep your eye on it when you're running it and you'll need to run it back-and-forth a few times if the leaves are wet and/or plentiful. Just read and follow the directions and pay attention and it'll be fine.
Someone else wrote this and it is true ... the Looj won't save you much time but in using it I haven't had to move the ladder once. Well worth the price!』

(Doesn't save time but makes gutter cleaning safer... wear safety glasses!) 『Before you decide whether you want to invest the money in a gutter cleaning "robot" do yourself a favor and measure your gutters to see if the Looj will fit. iRobot has a really convenient print out that shows the dimensions and will allow you to cut out the template to easily measure your gutter's width/depth and whether the Looj will make it under your gutter straps, nails or however they are hung. You can find it on iRobot's website in the Looj 125/135/155 product description. I had a link to the PDF but Amazon wouldn't let me include it in my review. Sorry.
Once you know the device will fit in your gutter and won't get stuck, then read the reviews and decide if it's worth the money.
For me, the Looj has done a great job on my gutters. It will, however, NOT save you ANY time and could potentially take longer than it would if you repositioned the ladder. The difference is that the Looj makes the process of gutter cleaning an order of magnitude safer than what most people are accustomed to. The Looj is also technically not a robot; it's more of a remote controlled car that works for you. You can't set it and forget it like you can iRobot's Roomba.
The way the device works is you first must charge the battery. This requires you to plug it into the outlet with just the bare battery; you cannot plug the Looj into the wall as you would with iRobot's other 'bots such as the Roomba. The reason being is that the Looj is waterproof up to 1 foot (12 inches, or roughly 31 cm). In order to accomplish this, iRobot couldn't design this as affordably as it is given the need to waterproof the electrical plug as well.
The battery requires a charge of at least 15 hours. I'm unsure as to the reasoning behind this, but it could be because of battery "memory." The Looj is a device that you won't be using every week of the year. You will be using it during certain seasons, with the Looj being retired after the last leaves fall from the trees and started back up in spring (potentially). If the battery had what is known as "memory," you would potentially need to buy a new battery every year. This battery will deplete itself gradually, so when bringing the Looj out of a winter's retirement you will need to recharge it and NOT buy a new battery.
One complaint from the first generation of Looj was you were expected to ONLY charge it 15 hours. No more, no less. I'm not sure how anyone could really keep track of this. The new Looj needs 15 hours to charge but now it's OK to leave it plugged in "for no more than a few days." Hopefully during a 3 day period you're home to unplug it. I have no idea what will happen if you leave it plugged in longer; probably a shorter battery life over all.
You will also need 2 AAA batteries (NOT included) for the remote control device. Install these into the handle/remote.
Once you've charged the battery, you place it into the Looj's battery compartment (follow the directions to ensure proper water proof-ness of the Looj). Attach the belt clip to your belt or pants, attach the Looj's auger to the Looj (the auger is that funny brush/rubber contraption and does all the work), attach the remote control to the Looj (it's a convenient handle) and hang the Looj from the belt clip. The clip for the Looj to hang from is on the opposite end of the auger. Do NOT attempt to hang the Looj from the remote control handle.
One complaint I have with regards to the clip is that it is very easy to pull not only the Looj off of the clip, but it's easy to take the clip with it, which makes it potentially dangerous as you fumble around on the ladder. I cannot recommend enough that if you go with the Looj, prior to climbing the ladder ensure you are acquainted with easily removing it from the clip so as to avoid any danger.
Another complaint with the belt clip is that you are expected to place the Looj, after running it through your dirty, mucky gutters, on the clip. This WILL bring the dirty, wet Looj into contact with your pants leg and possibly your shirt as well. Be sure to wear clothes you don't mind having to wash when doing this job. iRobot has a holster for the previous model that should protect you from dirty clothes and won't detach the belt clip with it but I'm unsure whether this will snuggly hold the second generation Looj.
Place your ladder. It is recommended that for larger sections of ladder you try and place the ladder in the middle of the gutter run so you can have the Looj travel the full length of the gutter from a central location. One of iRobot's design goals with this 'bot is to set the ladder ONCE and not have to reposition every time.
One thing I would like to stress is that if you are using this device, BUY AND WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. The Looj will be throwing debris out of the gutter at potentially high speeds and if you have wind you have the potential for blow back. If you get dirt and debris in your eyes, climbing down the ladder becomes infinitely more dangerous.
Once your ladder is placed, ascend it and clean a 2 foot space in the gutter and place the Looj in the center of the gutter. Ensure it rests in the bottom groove as securely as possible. If you don't do this, the Looj could possibly climb out of the gutter and damage itself, nearby plants or even a nearby bystander.
Remove the remote control. Turn the remote control on. Turn the robot on (there's a yellow switch). When you look at the remote, you will see a forward and reverse button. You will also see 2 options for the auger control. One goes clockwise the other counter clockwise. Before moving the Looj forward, decide which direction you want it to toss debris. The recommended method is to have it toss the debris off the roof instead of onto it. You can reverse the auger while using the Looj, making it so once you've complete 1/2 your gutter you place the Looj in the other 1/2 and toss the debris in the opposite direction (still away from the house).
If the Looj gets stuck in muck, put the Looj in reverse. If you still can't free it from the muck, put the Looj in reverse and the auger flipping in the direction opposite of the way you had it running when it got stuck. I have saved the Looj from a few close calls and have never had to get on the roof or reposition the ladder to retrieve it. Have patience.
The remote has a 75 foot (roughly 23 meters) range. This can be "extended" on aluminum gutters by placing and holding the remote to the gutter. I have not needed this as 75 feet is plenty of range on my rancher.
Move the Looj forward with the auger spinning (tossing away from the house). Take areas with lots of debris SLOWLY. iRobot claims that this model is smart enough to slow itself down in areas but I've found that it doesn't always slow itself enough, sometimes beginning to ride up some of the debris and potentially OUT of the gutter. That wouldn't be good.
Stay on the ladder while doing this job; otherwise you won't see when Looj is approaching a potentially dangerous fall. You may only need to set the ladder once, but you do need to stay on it while it works to avoid accidents.
Once you've moved the Looj to the end of the gutter, use the remote to put it into reverse and bring it back to you. Place the Looj on the other side of the gutter you're cleaning, change the direction the auger is spinning to ensure it's throwing muck away from the house, and move it forward just as you did the first side.
Be aware that you WILL make everything in throwing range of the Looj dirty with muck. This will require cleaning the front porch, back deck or anything you may park in your driveway within "spitting" range. Move anything far enough away from the gutters to avoid messy clean up. Of course you'd have some of this if you just ran your hands through the gutters and tossed the debris yourself... it would be a little less haphazard though.
I have also found that using the Looj in wet gutters is better than in dry gutters. This is because in my gutters I've found the really dry areas have cakes of debris in the gutter which the Looj can take some time to clean. The caveat is that it's obviously easier to clean dry debris off of a back deck than it is wet, but be aware that you lessen the cleaning potential of the Looj using it in dry gutters (assuming you get debris cakes like I do baked onto your gutter; if all you have is leaves and pine needles, you should be fine dry Loojing).
Beware of pine cones. If you have pine cones in your gutter and they are situated in just the wrong way, the Looj won't clear them from the gutter and will also potentially ride up onto the pine cone, again giving you the potentially of the Looj escaping from the gutter and diving to its death.
The differences between the models is what is included in the box:
135 - all of the above with 2 augers (instead of 1) and a nice rugged case (looks like a tool box)
155 - all of the 135 features AND 2 batteries instead of 1
The robot itself, in all three models, is EXACTLY the same as the other models. The only difference is the above included items.
In the end, if I had to decide to get the Looj or not, I would definitely buy again. I just hope the 3rd gen includes some way for the Looj to sense when it's preparing itself for a suicide leap from the gutter and a faster charging battery.

(OKay, but definitely requires patience) 『I have an older home with box gutters. The last time I was on the roof, the ladder moved as I tried to get off the roof which spooked me. A distant neighbor had a serious accident as well. As a result, I usually pay a roofer to clean the gutters. Unfortunately, they can take several weeks to come out and do the cleaning and I am an impatient person.
On our house, the gutters are 40' from the ground, so there isn't a convenient way to use the looj from the ground. I can access the gutters from the roof via dormers so my method of using the looj was to tie a rope to the looj and drive it into the gutters that were 3 or 4 feet below me.
Prior to looj'ing, I had 3 main problems around the downspouts. Roofing companies put small wire traps over the gutter to keep the downspouts from clogging. Three of these were clogged at the trap. The first one was relatively straight forward although I kept getting caught on the trap. Usually backing up and going forward would resolve the problem, but frequently I needed to use the rope with forward motion on the looj to get it to figure out how to get around the trap. This worked relatively well and after 20 minutes I had cleared the gutter. Unfortunately, I had also worked the trap free and had no way to retrieve it.
I moved to the second gutter to repeat the process. This one was pretty easy although, again, I had to convince the looj to bypass the gutter trap.
During the cleaning of the third gutter, I lost the auger twice. Luckily, I was able to drag it back using the looj and retrieve it and resinstall it.
During the cleaning of the fourth gutter, I lost the auger once and eventually lost one of the treads. I was unable to retrieve the tread, so I need to go to irobot.com and order another two. It sure would be nice if Amazon carried replacement parts.
I rate the Looj about a 3. Outside of a human going up on the roof (and the $150ish price tag that comes with it, the looj is the best thing out there, but it's not without it's issues.』
(Flings muck all over, doesn't necessarily fit all gutters) 『After noticing that my new house had completely clogged gutters, I rushed to the computer to buy the Looj. I'm a huge iRobot fan, and the price point was low enough I didn't have to ask my wife's permission!
I couldn't rush out and use "my new toy" because the battery takes 15 hours to charge.
I just used it for the first time, and was pretty impressed. First-off, it is definitely NOT a toy. It's pretty darned effective, when it works.
However, there were a few complicating factors.
1) Some of my gutters are too thin for the Looj, so I have to do them by hand.
2) The house has these nifty ice melting wires right on the edge of the shingles... and the Looj kept getting caught in them. I was usually able to free it by turning the auger backwards (slinging muck on the side of the roof) and reversing direction, but I had to free it up by hand a few times.
3) For really mucked up areas, even the mighty Looj was outgunned.
4) What it got, it did really well. But that auger... just slung the muck away from the roof. Onto me (even though I was standing 15 feet away), onto the car (which had to be washed anyway), and onto the patio (which my wife is ready to kill me for!)

(Not as good as Oreck bags) 『These bags fit my Oreck XL fine. However, they do not move air as efficiently as the Oreck bags. The reduced suction was immediately noticeable (the vacuum was much easier to push) with these bags. I assume part of it is the allergy filter technology. As a result I found that they need changing a little more frequently because the suction drops. I estimate they have about 2/3 the life of the Oreck bags I had before.
Also, these bags do not have the "Germstat" protection that inhibits mold and germs so if you vacuum certain things, like pet hair or pet litter or get any moisture into the bags they will start to have a bit of a funky smell after a while, whereas the Oreck bags produce much lower odor by comparison.
These bags are also made in China, which the manufacturer tries to obfuscate by printing "Made in P.R.O.C." on the packaging (PROC = People's Republic of China). They should just be honest and say "Made in China" for crying out loud.
Obviously the price for these bags is very good and so you can afford to change them twice as often and still come out ahead.

I've read different opinions on how long the unit will run on a full tank of water. For me, I need to fill it every night. 'Course it's very dry here in New Mexico and running the heat only makes it worse. The unit does a good job of putting out moisture.
Likes: I can have cold or warm mist. I like the mist "spout" that I can move to aim at different parts of the room. It's a bit pricey but it works. My throat doesn't get dry during the night. My skin is not as dry. I think it has also helped with my recovery from pneumonia.
Dislikes: It's kind of a pain to fill the reservoir. Why can't they put a cap on the TOP of the tank instead of the BOTTOM? Not a show stopper but it'd be easier to handle if I didn't have to flip it over after filling. Setting the desired humidity is a joke. Don't expect the unit to run based on the humidity level you set on the unit. From the reviews I've read, sounds like this is a standard complaint. I really don't care that it doesn't work perfectly. I go by "sight" on how much mist I want to come out of the unit. It only took a couple nights to get it set to "my" comfort level. I do get some white powder residue in the room. Not bad but it's there. We have hard water. I could use distilled but 3.5 gallons a day would get expensive and be a pain. I'll just wipe away the powder. The filter is supposed to prevent this... for me, it doesn't.
Do your research and buy what you need. There's a bunch of humidifiers out there. Determine why you need one and what options you want... it should narrow your choices down significantly. For me, I narrowed it down to the AOS 7135 and the Venta VS 207. Since Venta 207 has been discontinued, the AOS 7135 won.』

In order to hear it run, I would have to be standing right beside it, and even then it is very quiet. (Very disappointing - what a waste of money) 『I researched this humidifier extensively and it seemed to be one of the very best, many positive consumer ratings on numerous websites. I loved that it went to so much effort to achieve especially clean water output. And there were so many digital options that seemed great to have as well. But what good is any of that when it only worked well for a single year. I was a very diligent humidifier user too - cleaning it properly according to the manual, making sure to replace the things that need replacing. It was annoying to continuously have to take care of the machine, cleaning the inside compartment the best I could, and dishing out all the money for the expensive replacement parts that it needed for its normal 2-3 month maintenance issues. But I kept thinking at least its worthwhile - it works so well...Not for long! The second year the mist output was next to nothing, the dirty water sign was always flashing so I had to clean it every other day, and worst of all the circular "membrane" was so delicate that I accidentally damaged it in a routine cleaning - and as far as I know its not replaceable. I maintained them diligently - which is a LOT of work. Within two humdifying seasons all three units were broken - they no longer produced mist of any kind. I tried to contact Air-O-Swiss on many occassions to rectify this problem and their customer service was abysmal. They made a few suggestions, none of which worked. In the end I was told an Air-O-Swiss representative would contact me in an effort to rectify these problems and the whole situation. Six months later I am still waiting for that call. These units were expensive, high maintenance ( and also very expensive for cleaners, filters and ionic sticks) and in the end were just a huge disappointment. Save your money and go for another cheaper brand and save yourself the aggravation. I will never buy another Air-O-Swiss unit, neither should you ! Also, my neighbor just informed me her exact same model is now leaking after just one season. Avoid this expensive and poorly designed product.』

(Beautiful design but the built in humidity detector has major flaw) 『I just got this beautiful designed humidifier and was hoping to retired my older version of the air-o-swiss 7135 (the one with blue see through tank)and I was very disappointed how the newer version I just got. I set it 45% humidity and set it in my living room. the humidity detector just can't accurately detect how humid it is in the room and keep pumping the mist. At first I thought maybe it's the size of my living room so i left it on then went do some grocery shopping. When I get back home, the moment I opened the front door I sense the humidity is high in the room (I guess the unit just keeps pumping the mist) and I went to check the "current humidity" it still says 32 ~ 40 and never can reach 45% as I wanted. but then I put the older version (the one with blue tank) at the same place, it humidified the room quickly up to 45% and the mist stopped and when the humidity dropped below 45% then it start pumping the mist.
Yes the newer version has more beautiful and modern design and look to it but if you have to pay almost $100 more for the newer version and the humidity detector is not working as well as the older one (with blue tank), then what's the point? the whole point of paying for a more expensive humidifer is that it will automatically detect the room's humidity and maintaine the desired humidity level.
So I am gonna return this unit, and get another older verion with the blue tank # 7135.
As other reviewers mentioned about the leak at the bottom, white dust, I didn't experience any of it. I called Foodsaver to ask if the Freshsaver was compatible with any of their other containers. The woman I spoke with told me they work with these, the lunch and leftover, or the sandwich and snack ones.
At the time I wanted to place my order Amazon was showing the sandwich and snack ones as shipping in 3-5 weeks, so I purchased 2 sets of these, the lunch and leftover ones.
They work fine for me as far as keeping the air in. I wash both the bottom and the lid by hand, to ensure that neither warps. I also would never put them in the microwave. I use them for leftovers, and for that they work perfectly, no problem.』
(GREAT for leftovers!) 『When I first got these I had difficulty making them work. But then I found that there are some tricks that need to be told for proper use. These are really excellent canisters.
1] When you put food in them you need to make sure all four corners have 'snapped' tight. After placing cover on the bowl and pressing down, press again the individual 4 corners. Usually you will find 1 will 'snap' tightly.
2] Then you take the adapter. Insert the canister fitting into the adapter 'nozzle' and place adapter over vacuum port on canister lid.
3] Press the 'Fast' button if your unit has one, then press canister. You should be able to hear instant vacuuming.
4] When the machine stops, HOLD DOWN THE ADAPTER WITH ONE HAND AND REMOVE THE VACUUM HOSE WITH THE OTHER. tHIS IS CRUCIAL.
5] After the tube has been removed, you can now remove the adapter. Pull up a corner to ensure the seal is perfect (it will be) and VOILA!
All the above sounds much more complicated than it really is. Once you get the hang of it you'll love it and it won't take but a second.
When washing you can out the bowl on the top shelf of the dishwasher NO HEAT. Hand wash the lids. I have been using mine as I instructed above for over a year now and I love these things. I save left over hamburger helper, lasagna, and more and the food always is as fresh as when I sealed it as long as 2 weeks later.
For Easter Ham, we always have LOTS left over. I cut the ham up off the bone and fill 3 of these containers and then freeze them. The seal has lasted almost a month when we had the last one. I was truly amazed. There is a great price here now for close out containers. Save money and stop wasting food and buy some today. Follow my instructions and you will be happy I assure you.
I have not tried to use any of my containers to maranade anything, but I am looking forward to doing so 1 day.』
(Great for keeping foods or marinating small quantities) 『I have a few of the foodsaver containers, and use them for both food storage and marinating. The smaller containers are great for small portions of food or for one person. For food storage, I used them primarily for foods that I know I won't use for a couple of days. I have had no problems with cracking, but I don't use the containers in the freezer, and I wash them by hand. I gave them 4 stars because they are not good for storage of foods that you might use in portions. Each time the container is opened, it has to be sealed again for the remainder of the contents. This means pulling out the Foodsaver sealing unit which is often inconvenient.
These containers would be very useful for someone that packs a lunch to take to work. They would keep sandwiches or salads very fresh until lunchtime.』

Both the virtual wall and lighthouse features worked well. I agree that it should plug into AC power. I think C sized batteries would be better than the D cells that it uses.
If I were only rating this item alone I would give it 4-5 stars. Unfortunately, I had to return the item because my 500 series Roomba failed just after the 1-year warranty. I had a 400 series that failed just after warranty due to the "circle dance". My 500 series failed because the two main brushes stopped turning with light use and thus it stopped cleaning. From what I have read this was due to a problem of an unsealed gear box with plastic gears. It seems hair would get in and cause the gear box to fail. It seems that the gear box has been re-designed but I do not think that there is any way to know which gear box one is getting when buying the product.
I find that iRobot makes a poorly designed product with very poor customer support. I do not see how they are staying in business. I think the only option to use this product would be with a lifetime warranty.』

My big 12-gallon vac with the 2-1/2" hose, extension hose, attachments, pump, etc. is ideal for heavier work, home floods, bulk pickup, straight-thru drywall sanding, big sawdust clean-up, pebbles, etc. But, it's big - surely no lightweight - and depending upon the jobsite, it can be a royal pain to schlep around, across a stretch of property, up several flights of stairs, through doorways, etc. and then set up particularly when a smaller vacuum will do just as well if not better.
This little Shop Vac is absolutely perfect on-the-job for cleaning up smaller amounts of paint chips, drywall compound fragments, sawdust, masonry dust and/or drywall dust after making repairs or drilling holes to mount things, run wires, etc. It's convenient, powerful, compact and lightweight. Did I mention easy to carry about, set up and use? As for emptying and cleanout, let's not allow our familiarity with household carpet and floor vacs and the convenience of dust cups to cloud our judgement. A household vacuum would be toast within minutes if you tried to vacuum up fine masonry or drywall dust, let alone anything "wet".
This vacuum uses either the common blue filter disc with the plastic retaining ring, a less-efficient tie-on cloth bag - OR - the #90667 Shop Vac filter BAG if you prefer. Yes! This vacuum will accept throwaway filter bags so you can keep the vac's insides clean and avoid handling any mess if you so desire. The bags are sold in a pack of three and relatively inexpensive. Once it's filled, simply remove the hose, open the vac and remove the bag. Insert a new one, re-insert the hose and reassermble the vac. It's that easy.
The foam sleeve should be kept in place on the cage at all times and used by itself - no disc or bag in place - for any wet pickups.
To empty my Shop Vac Hang On of dry pickup, I take an ordinary dirt-cheap 13-gallon plastic trash bag, snap it fully open, place it on the floor of my garage with the garage door open, insert the entire vacuum into the bag and then take it apart gently to empty it, remove the bag or filter disc, clean out the innards and then reassemble. That way, nearly all of the dry mess, dust, dirt, etc. is contained within the plastic bag, ready to be added to with other trash or tied up and tossed out by itself. It is, after all, only a 1.5 gallon capacity vacuum so if you prefer to not use filter bags, the actual amount of dirt et al it holds is relatively small when compared to that of the larger and more traditional shop vacuums.
I used to own the original Shop Vac 1-gallon Mini Hang-Up and it's 1-1/4" hose was proprietary. To remove the hose, you had to first open up the vacuum and remove the motor half of the unit so as to slide the hose assembly out of the retaining slots in the bottom half or tub. This new 1.5-gallon model uses a friction-fit 1-1/4" hose and so, when necessary, it's easy to twist and remove the hose without opening up the vacuum itself. Also, this improved and slightly larger model has a blower port which, although not a critical aspect of a small vac, is still nice to have at times.
Some folks have complained that larger particles will get stuck in the end of the hose because it has a deflector molded into it on the vacuum end. That deflector directs dirt and dust downward rather than allow it to fly directly at the motor assembly. True, it is a small restriction and clogs will sometimes happen - especially with larger chips of paint or small twigs - but it's pretty simple to clear the obstruction and proceed. I sometimes hand crunch the larger paint chips before I vacuum them up. I will also pick up the really large particles by hand, snap apart the vacuum a bit and toss them directly into the vacuum's tub. Sort of like having a mini trash can as well. The 1-1/4" hose is standard on all smaller vacs and it's more flexible and much easier to deal with than the larger and heavier 1-1/2", 1-7/8" and 2-1/2" hoses. Again, this is not a vacuum intended for "big jobs" or "big dirt". Whatever compromises I might have made to use this vacuum are - in my opinion - well worth the convenience, ease and portability it offers me.
All-in-all the compact and lightweight Shop Vac Hang On is a nicely improved, solid, sturdy, efficient, and relatively quiet little wet/dry vacuum that would be an ideal vacuum for the condo or apartment dweller, the average hobbyist or the car enthusiast. (Biggest suck for the buck) 『6.25 horse power from a 9.5 amp motor? They must be pretty small horses! Even so this is quite simply the most powerful wet dry vac I've ever used. It makes dust collection on portable power tools a breeze. A dedicated tool vac with a current sensing switch is more convenient.( Fein , Porter Cable , Festo , etc.) But this is a lot cheaper and moves more air. It's also very quiet compared to other vacs supposedly rated in the 5 or more horsepower range. You get Two sets of tools with it. One for the large hose and one for the small hose. I think I'd rather have one hose of better quality and longer length though. The threaded hose attachment is a giant improvement. How many times have you tried to move your shop vac by the hose only to find it loose in your hand ? No more. The filter that comes with it is also a vast improvement. It is a pleated canister that is washable when it finally gets clogged up. That means no more changing filters when going from dry to wet pick up. I washed mine the other day and set it in the sun to dry. It got ran over by a truck so it is no more. It was my truck and I was driving. I got a clean stream filter instead of the original. It seems to get fine dust a little better. For drywall dust I really recommend the drywall dust bag filters. They go a long time before clogging up. Much longer than the canister filters. For general grub work and heavy clean up I really like this vac. When I burn it up in a couple of years I'll probably get another one . The thing I really liked about it is that the physics doesn't take a backseat to formalism, the same effect is also often examined from several different angles. Another nice this is that the effects of the electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations on atoms is often considered.
The book opens with a chapter covering some of the earlier work that hinted at vacuum fluctuations, for example blackbody radiation and spontaneous emissions. Following this the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field are derived.
Then some interesting physics is presented. The Casimir effect is covered briefly. The Casimir effect is returned to frequently throughout the book, in fact it's one of the central topics of it. The Unruh-Davies effect is derived and a physical explanation is given for it, there is also a discussion of what a freefalling observer with a charge sees. Although not mentioned in the book, the analogous effect has important implications for Hawking radiation. Many other effects are considered. One that I thought was particularly interesting is that the van der Waals force between atoms that lack permanent magnetic dipole moments is ultimately caused by vacuum fluctuations. Van der Waals forces are covered in great detail as the book proceeds.
The final four chapters read like a quick introduction to quantum field theory similar to the approach in Bjorken and Drell. The contents are roughly: the Dirac equation, some of its effects (e.g. Zitterbewegung and vacuum polarization), the realization that the Dirac equation has issues as a single particle theory, second quantization, renormalization and Feynman diagrams. One of the interesting results is the calculation of the Casimir type force caused by the electron field. Other than that, not much else from this part of the book stood out for me.
This isn't a comprehensive book on field theory in general or even quantum electrodynamics, however I do think it adds a lot of insight into quantum electrodynamics and the physical effects of the vacuum. It is very detailed in the things it covers and often adds insight by looking at a problem from several angles. I also think parts of the book would be very useful for somebody studying atomic physics.』
