Needed another for upstairs, so I bought this Shark. It's GREAT! I was concerned when I got it that the instructions said "don't leave plugged in" because I always had cordless vacs that were charged all the time. It has turned out not to be a problem--the charge lasts a long time (for a cordless vac).
From my experience, this Vac is much quieter than the B&D and picks up every bit as much...if not more...than the supposedly more powerful B&D. I use the brush attachment almost every time and it's great for quick pick ups and vacuuming the stairs. I find myself bringing it downstairs so I can use it rather than the B&D. Highly recommend!』

(The Belt Will Work for a Long Time If Properly Adjusted) 『What can one say about a belt; it either works or it doesn't.
I've noticed complaints about the belt breaking frequently on the Eureka 4870. I think that is due in large part to the manual operation of the height adjustment.
The height should be adjusted to the highest level that actually works on the carpet being vacuumed. If it is adjusted too low, the resistance from the carpet versus the powerful motor on the 4870 stresses the belt too much and it breaks.
I've used the same belt on my 4870 for well over two years and it seems to be as good as new. I have a fairly thick carpet and adjust the height to the next to the highest position for most of the carpeted areas of the house. We have some rugs and other carpeted areas where I need to drop the height down, but usually the third level down from the highest works well on those. Properly adjusted the 4870 cleans very well, fluffs up the carpet, and extends the belt life.

This product is a Woodstock International W1044 reducer. One end is exactly 4" outside diameter (inside diameter is 3.75"), and the other end is 2.5" O.D. (I.D. is 2.25").
You won't be able to directly connect this adapter/reducer to a machine with a 4" or 2.5" dust port - since the reducer is the same size. A section of hose would be needed between the machine's dust port and the reducer.
This reducer is male on both ends. If you consider the inside diameters, that could be called female, but you won't be able to clamp the reducer end to tighten it over a hose (e.g., a 2.25" hose), if you insert a hose in that end.
As you can see in Customer Images, the reducer is funnel-shaped, and on my computer monitor, "W1044" is just visible in the middle of the photo.
Since the ends are only tapered at the tips, clamped flexible dust hoses stay put.
Quality of this simple and inexpensive product is first-rate. It is made of 1/8" thick ABS plastic. I have several of these in my dust collection system, one of which is over 10 years old. They seem to last forever.』
(The best thing ever!) 『I cannot think of a better gift the home shop owner can give to him/herself than a dust collection system. The time it takes to set it up is minimal and the first time I used my miter saw with the vacum hooked up I almost started to tear up a bit. OK, maybe a bit strong but I did not have shards flying and the need to be in a full hazmat suit just to make big pieces of wood small.
I do hope you spend a few dollars on a system for yourself, I spent around a grand and am very happy with it.

I used to go through nearly a roll of toilet paper each day wiping my nose. I've seen doctors and have prescription sprays which do help out greatly, but I wanted to see if I could resolve the situation by eliminating the source of the problem.
I started off with five (5) re-conditioned Sharper Image air purifiers that I bought on eBay. I still have those and they do pick up some dust and do make the room smell better but only to a limited degree since they're passive systems. I then bought 5 new fan driven Sharper Image units which were very expensive and not at all effective. I returned them all.
That's when I bought the IQAir units. To be honest, I don't recall why I bought these units over the others since it's been years since I bought them.
I bought these units since I didn't want to retrofit my HVAC system and I wanted to control each room separately.
I've owned four (4) IQAire HealthPro Plus units for about three (3) years. All are still working without any mechanical problems. I first bought two units to test out then a few months later I bought another two.
I bought all these units because our noses were always running (allergies?) and every surface was coated with dust. The dust on all of the furniture was driving me crazy. I'd clean a surface one day and a week later it was like it was never cleaned. When the bright sun comes in at the late afternoon in a raking angle, I could see countless dust particles.
Our living environment: No rugs, wooden floors, leather chairs and couches, no pets, no one smokes, most cooking that would contribute to smoke or grease is done outdoors. Doors and windows, unfortunately, are closed almost all of the time because of the humidity or pollen. Despite what I would have thought was a clean living area, I'm surprised by the amount of dust.
We placed two (2) units downstairs which has an open floor plan (no walls). One in the TV room and one in our bedroom.
If you have shedding pets, fry foods, smoke, have carpets then expect to spend a lot of money replacing the filters on a frequent basis.
Almost immediately after buying these, our sneezing and the amount of dust dropped significantly.
The charcoal is very effective at removing odors. It's easy to tell when the charcoal has been saturated; the house begins to smell. When I was cooking spaghetti sauce with garlic, onions and spices people upstairs could tell that I was cooking. That's when I replaced the expensive charcoal filters.
To be brief, here are the pros and cons of these units:
Cons:
They're very big. We have a small house and we live with the bulky units but we have to walk around an object the size of a small refrigerator.
They're heavy but they roll easily. The charcoal filter alone weighs a lot. On more expensive units, the charcoal filters can weigh 50 or more pounds.
At the highest settings, 5 or 6, they're extremely loud but it's not an annoying high-pitched noise. The sound maintains a constant frequency. The sound is very much like being inside the cabin of a plane. But due to the noise, we can't use them when we're in the room except at the lower settings. When we're talking, we turn them off.
They generate a lot of heat. In the warmest months of summer I don't use them since the air conditioner isn't powerful enough to keep up with the heat. If you live in a very warm/hot climate, expect a significant bump in your electricity bill.
The filters are expensive. I just replaced the pre-filter and carbon filters for all 4 units. That set me back about six-hundred dollars. I probably should replace the HEPA filters but the thought of spending another eight hundred dollars for all four units is somewhat overwhelming.
Pros:
They're great white-noise generators. We keep the bedroom air cleaner at 3 (middle setting) almost all the time. We raise the power setting to 6 (the maximum) when we leave the house. When we have a guests staying over, we put one of the units in their room. While I'm writing this review, I have three units running at full power in other rooms which does mask a lot of outdoor noises.
They generate a lot of heat. In the colder months, we keep them running almost non-stop since they clean the air and help warm up the house. Remember, when it's cold outside, there's no such thing as wasted heat from any light fixture or appliance since they're helping to heat the house. The two units downstairs running at the highest setting will keep the house warm when it's about 50 degrees outdoors.
Very effective at removing house odors. When the house starts developing odors, you know it's time to replace the charcoal filters. I ignore the timer on the LED readouts.
They do remove almost all the odors and dust. Before we bought these units, when we stepped into the house after being out for a few hours, we noticed that the house had a punky odor and we thought that we kept a very clean home. The Sharper Image units really did help on the odors. We bought three (3) Sharper Image units downstairs and the UPS delivery guy who we've known for a number of years asked why our house smelled better. But the Sharper Image units only pick up a relatively small amount of dust. With the IQAir units running, there's no visible dust in the air when the sun hits the house on a sharp angle. Of course, the microscopic dust particles can't be visually seen but since we don't have to use any medicines when the IQAir units are running, I believe that they're capturing the tiny harmful particles. In the dead of summer when I don't run the units, the Sharper Image units need to be cleaned much more frequently and the sneezing and running nose flares up again.
Very reliable. They're built like tanks. No dents or breaks in any of the 4 units. No mechanical problems in 3+ years.
Other thoughts:
The filter timers on the units don't make any sense to me. If you smoke, fry food and have a dusty house, the filter life will be much shorter.
Ignore the timers but don't ignore the pre-filter. One of my units became noisy. I thought the motor was dying. It was making an awful high-pitched, warbling noise. I looked at the pre-filter and saw that it was coated in dust. I vacuumed the pre-filter and went outdoors to blew out the remaining large particles of dust with a high-pressure air gun. This eliminated the noise which gave me a few additional days of life until the new filters arrive.
Even with the IQAir units running, the Sharper Image filters still do pick up some dust each week which is why I keep them. At least they use near zero electricity and don't require replacement filters.
I read the hyperbolic testimonials (reviews) at the Sylvane web site. One person wrote:
"Another great side benefit of these purifiers is that we have virtually no dust in the rooms where they are anymore. In an old house with hardwood floors, I used to remember being appalled by the dust bunnies but they are no more. And, these purifiers eliminate any odors, so rooms smell fresh and clean even in a musty old house."
This is utter nonsense. The air purifiers will not magically clean a humid, dirty house. What it will do is reduce dust particles and reduce odors in a clean, dry house. The musty odors are caused by living organisms which thrive in a humid environment.

I believe that's the panacea effect -- if a person wants to believe, then they will. I don't think one could notice a difference in less than one day and that would depend upon the initial cleanliness and the size of the room.

They're big, noisy at the higher setting, they emit a lot of heat and the filters are expensive to replace. But they are very effective at removing a lot of dust and odors. If you have allergies, they're a must have.』

(Strange Odor Outweighs Any Positives) 『I experienced the same strange odor emitting from the IQAir as another review. I initially called local authorized dealer and they said they had never had anyone complain of any odors before. Since the manual did say their may be some odor initially, I waited... and waited.. and waited. Now, over 16 months later, I'm done waiting. The unit fills the 12 x 12 room it is supposed to *clean* with an obnoxious odor my mother described as 'paint fumes'. Unacceptable for my newborns' nursery. I feel like a fool for spending so much money and time on something that fell so short.』
(Awfully expensive device.) 『My child's allergist recommended that I get a room air purifier, so I did my research and bought the IQAir Health Pro Plus. I purchased it locally from an authorized dealer. For what it is worth, the purifier did nothing to improve my child's allergies. I can't blame the lack of child's improvement on this particular room air purifier. However, this unit emits a nasty odor from the charcoal filter, and it seems that this filter has contaminated the HEPA filter stacked above it--the odor is not there if the unit is operated with only the prefilter. Cost to replace these stinky filters will be $280, and who knows if the problem will return. There are supposed to be more than 7800 hours of life left on the charcoal filter and more than 14,000 hours of life left on my HEPA filter, but they just need to go to the trash. What a waste. I cannot endorse this unit with these problems, especially at the price. Not recommended.』
(Does the Job, Definitely has some flaws...) 『I've now owned this machine for approximately 3 months. (Long enough for one prefilter change.) Before I begin, let me give you some background information:
I live in an area that produces most of the US grass seed.... and I've become severely allergic to grass. In my 750 sq foot apartment, I had two honeywell filters. Even so, I had to be on 20-60 mg prednisone for 6 weeks to be able to breathe. (Average dose was about 30-40mg prednisone/day and I could not leave the apartment).
I got this filter partially out of desperation. I did not want to go through another grass season like that.
I can't say (like some have reported) that I was able to be free of all medication, etc. But I got through the time with only 10 mg prednisone (which if you've ever been on it, you know that 10mg is VERY little!) and I could not tell if the pollen count outside was 30 or 1600. My breathing inside was no different. (And if I tried stepping outside, I felt like I was being hit with a sledgehammer, and my lungs would nearly instantly tighten up).
So for me, this filter is a keeper. I was MUCH healthier this year than I was the previous years without it, and I'm very grateful to the company for making something that has given me such asthma relief.
However, this filter is not without its issues that should be weighed in:
Minor issues with this air filter: - This is a "slow-and-steady wins the race" filter. I would not expect you to feel serious relief from this filter for about 24 hrs after putting it in a room. Furthermore, if you have an exhaust fan running for any long period of time (ie, bathroom fan, kitchen hood fan, etc.) _this filter cannot keep up_.
-Doesn't seem to filter out wood smoke (or perhaps one of the chemical byproducts of it) 100%. I was at a location where the front of the home had a wood stove that was belching out some smoke. Even though I was in a room at the other end of the house with a closed door, this filter couldn't clear the smoke enough for me. I was forced to leave.
Cons: -It is "plastic-y." While the "lego-brick" construction is definitely ingenious, I'm concerned about longevity of the side clips and handles. If I'm paying that much for an air filter, I would expect the handles and clips to be rock solid, not like this.
-VERY Pricey: Don't bother with this filter unless you really need it. If you are only an allergy sufferer, you might want to try the Honeywell filters first.
-Prefilter is pricey. I never heard about the prefilter in reviews of this device (I only heard about how you only have to change the HEPA filters every few years). The prefilter is supposed to be changed 4 times a year and they are $50 each. (!!) Worse yet, the "change indicator" is only a timer. So you have no real indication of the performance of any particular filter or whether or not you actually NEED to change it.
Conclusion: If it didn't perform its job so well, it would be a 3-star machine because of the cons. If you aren't dealing with some serious breathing issues, I'd pass on this machine.
But if you are having serious breathing problems and would be willing to pay through the nose to get some relief, then I would HIGHLY recommend this machine. 』 『The HealthPro Plus is IQAir's best selling room air purifier. The best part is it does not blow out dust, not even from plastering or drywall. My brother bought a Rigid from Home Depot and it was horrible. He hated it. I have used this in almost every situation: wet vac to get water out of my basement; blower to blow leaves; vacuum up after putting up drywall and plastering and sanding; vacuuming the cars; vacuuming outside (because it was out there and I was too lazy to get the broom); etc., and this shop vac handled everything with ease. As far as quality, I have no fear that it will fall apart. It takes the bumps of going down steps just fine. The hose is what it is. You can't expect it to be indestructable, but it sucks up 3 inch nails, drywall screws, etc., with no problem and no punctures (in either the hose or the bag). Keep in mind this is one big shop vac, but it does a great job. I bought accessories at home depot, and they fit all standard hoses. I really think this is an essential product for any home and/or business owner. It is VERY easy to use and put together.
Added March 23, 2008: This machine is awesome. It has gotten me through some minor and one major flood, a complete basement finish, as well as blowing the leaves when the landscapers don't show up. It can take a beating. I was sure I would have to buyg a new one after a big rain storm started flooding my basement, but it turned on and sucked up water pretty quickly, and helped get out what the sump pump (that I bought while my wife was using this shop vac) could not pick up (the last half inch). It picks up nails with no problem, and the bags are thick enough that they don't puncture (they will puncture the bag when you remove it, so be careful). I bought a few other attatchments at home depot, and everything works very well together. If you have a house or are getting one, you need one of these! Just buy a good extension cord (not a cheap one that will heat up). Also, it has the best suction of any vacuum, so when the kids spill a Costco sized Nestle's Quick, it picks it up with no problem. In fact, it picks up any reasonable debris, and some unreasonable one's as well. The best thing, it does not blow dry wall dust (unless you aim the exhuast the wrong way). What I mean is, what goes in STAYS in.』
(Won't buy another) 『I gave it three stars because of quality of build and design. There were no usable instructions although something called instructions was in the box. The quality of the materials is sub-par, all plastic. I feel like I have to be very easy when moving the vacuum around for fear of breaking it. The hose is very cheap and kinks at the neck easily. The attachment storage was not really designed at all. There are no good placements for attachments or the hose.
It does vacuum well and the noise level is not bad. Next time I will get a true commercial vac, not one that has a marketing label on it that says "industrial".』

(Bosch Airsweep shop vacuum) 『I bought the Bosch because I noticed that regular shop vacuums allow fine particles to escape via the output vents. Definately not good for the lungs or the refinishing project on the bench. The Bosch works as advertised. In spite of it's weight (47#) and size, it is easy to move around the shop. My shop is a garage and space is a premium, so being able to navigate amongst the stationary tools is very nice. It is quieter than the "Home Depot" type shop vacuums, and as stated, much cleaner. I also purchased the tool set, and I have had no problems with the tools fitting the hose provided with the vacuum. They also work well. I have not yet tried hooking the hose to portable tools, but I suspect that the flexible hose will work better than the hosed supplied with other units. For my lungs sake, it was a great investment.』
(Taking Dust Collection To The Next Level) 『I already own a fairly uber cyclone dust collector, but that collector is really designed for high volume, low suction applications (where a relatively large space needs dust control like a planer or cabinet saw). However there are plenty of applications where you need high suction and relatively low volume of air such as most hand sanding applications. I use this vacuum for just that as well as for my miter saw and sometime my router table. I already own a shop vac, but the noise can make things quite unpleasant. I deliberated on this vacuum for quite awhile due to it's cost and I compared it to festool and fein competing products. I am glad I bought it. It maintains good suction and the noise level is very bearable. As a result, I tend to use it more often, especially when sanding and I don't yack lung biscuits out the next day because I am breathing cleaner air in my shop. I feel confident it will pay for itsself with the related health benefits down the road.』
(excellent vac) 『I bought this as the best pick between the Fein turbo III&the Festool 33 vac. I have a commercial woodshop and needed it mainly for pick up from tools as well as general clean up. I had the Fein turbo II for 10 yrs before it gave up and can definitely reccomend it, But I was looking for larger capacity (less frequent emptying), so it was between the Fein III and the Bosch. The Festool is very nice too but seemed overpriced and awkward to empty if you don't use the bags (which are pricy, as are all their accessorys). So the Bosch was it, it's made from a softer plastic than the other two but functions very well, the filter shaker really works, and the power broker functions like the variable speed control on the festool. the hose could be longer but it does come with a rubber end that fits the Festool domino outlet perfectly. No tools but they are available seperately from any of the manufacturers, I am using the old Fein hose and tools with this vac.』
(What are you after - price or convenience?) 『This unit does what many shop vacuums fail to do, pick up dust and wood shavings without getting clogged every few seconds. It is also quiet enough that I do not need ear plugs just to clean up around my shop. My first measurement was 185 degrees. Every hour after my initial measurement was 5 degrees cooler - I did this for 4 hours and it was very consistent. Also take in consideration it took about 1 minute to take a proper temp., so the water stood exposed for awhile.

I also thought a specific Thermos company would have the best quality product. It is a little heavier than most thermos this size, but I thought it would be better. However, when I add my morning coffee to it, the coffee is cold by the time I open the thermos just about 2 hours later. I tried heating the thermos first by adding hot water to warm it before the coffee. It will retain heat a little longer, but it quickly cools even when firmly sealed.
My last, grocery-store, on-sale thermos was much better (and less expensive)and would retain the heat throughout the day, but it's too big to cart around. What went wrong with this product? A real disappointment!』

(good while it lasted) 『this was like i said....good while it lasted. i miss it too, even tho it was awkward to use. the hose was stiff&rarely stayed connected to the unit but it had good suction power to run off the lighter. i loved sitting in traffic cleaning my car! but the switch broke not long after i started using it. just a simple toggle; much too flimsy to hold up to regular use. i was never able to use the wet vac feature as the only power source was the car lighter. guess that's a good thing; that i never upended my liter of dew!
so if u can be very careful using the switch&put up w/ the hose being so stiff its hard to maneuver, i'd say its a pretty good buy. i'd buy another but i plan to buy a new switch for the one i have.
