We also purchased this vacuum based on the favorable reviews on Amazon, and now I'm little surprised by those reviews. Yes, this vacuum has great suction and it will undoubtedly pick up everything on the carpet, but the other drawbacks are too numerous to surpass it's one good feature. First of all, I'm shocked that anyone would say this vacuum is light weight. I could not get the whole thing on my bathroom scale (I was curious after feeling the weight)... what I could get on the scale said 24 lbs. I think it must be upwards of 30 lbs, which makes it a tremendous pain to lug up and down the stairs. I don't think the self-propel feature makes it feel any lighter or easier to push around. Because of the weight, it tips over EXTREMELY easily when using the hose and attachments. It has whacked me pretty good a couple times. If you have small children, it is extremely important to put this vacuum away in a closet immediately when you are done using it. If it fell on a child's head the damage could be severe. The cord coming from the vacuum comes off the vacuum at the bottom, so you have to hold the cord so you don't run over it. It does have a hook at the top that you can put it on, but it does not work well. If you purchase the extended hose, it does not stay on the "shelf" on the vacuum and falls off while vacuuming. Also, I think it is much louder than average vacuum cleaners. My kids race up the stairs anytime I pull it out of the closet! Unless you're a strapping young man, I really doubt you will be happy with this vacuum.』

I have seen a couple reviews on here commenting that this is not effective and does not create an actual vacuum. While it could never create an actual vacuum, I think it is still effective. A wine will not be perfect the next day, but will still be very good. And where even a good wine will rarely last more than two days once opened, I have experienced very drinkable wine after four days. Of course it all depends on where you start. If it's a $5 bottle of wine then don't expect magic.』

So far these have worked well. Stoppers go easily into the bottles. Just have to pull the vacuum handle several times until you here a clicking. Not difficult to pull handle. Also when ready to reuse, just need to press the upper 'stem' on the stopper sideways, vacuum seal is broken and stopper comes out easily. So far working well. People at the winery said you could not use this method for 'sparkling' beverages (champagne) as the vacuum would remove the CO2 (sparkle) - so have not tried with champagne.』
(You can create a vacuum with a hand pump) 『While I don't own this item (I have added it to my Christmas list), I would like to dispel a myth that has appeared in some of the reviews.
As a mechanical engineer who has designed vacuum chambers for over 16 years, I can tell you with great certainty that you can create a vacuum with a hand pump.
Technically, a vacuum is any pressure below atmosphere. If you can remove one molecule of gas with this hand pump you have created a vacuum. If you hear or feel air rush into the bottle when you remove the cork, you have created a vacuum.
The more relevant question is how strong of a vacuum can you create?
Since vacuum is simply a pressure (force/area) less than atmosphere, you can measure the "strength" of the vacuum by comparing the force differential across the pump. Atmospheric pressure at sea level is around 14.7 lb/in^2. If the area of the pump's piston is 1 in^2, you could create a complete vacuum with 14.7 pounds of force. In other words, you could create a complete vacuum with half the force needed to put air in your car's tire. The application of force to this pump is not the limiting factor in creating a vacuum.
The limiting factor will likely be the vapor pressure of the wine.
Due to the kinetics of the molecules in the liquid, there are always some molecules of wine that are ejected from the surface of the liquid. The rate at which these molecules are ejected is a function of temperature. If all the air molecules were removed from the bottle, a vapor would be created in the head space at the vapor pressure of the liquid.
Presuming that the wine was composed exclusively of ethanol and water, its vapor pressure would be around 53 torr or 1/14th of an atmosphere ([...]). The pressure in the wine bottle cannot be reduced below this point as long as liquid remains in the bottle.
A wine bottle opening is typically 18 mm, so a force of 5 pounds would be sufficient to remove all the air from the headspace. It should be noted that air may have diffused into the wine and predicting its extraction is complicated by a time element and potential chemical reactions between the wine and the oxygen. It should also be noted that mixing between the wine vapor and the air in the head space would likely result in some wine vapor being extracted during the pumping process, reducing the amount of air extracted proportionally. This effect would likely produce a first order response that may make it impossible to completely remove all air while wine vapor remains.
I don't how good the seals are on the Vacu Vin, but if it feels like you have to pull with about five pounds of force, you are getting a pretty strong vacuum. Less than 1 pound of force would produce a pretty weak vacuum that would leave more than 80% of the air in the bottle.

On the other hand, it does provide a lot of reach and I can lay the handle of the windtunnel on the bottom stair and reach nearly to the top with the 'upholstery' tool. Very nice.
It is also quite useful when I have to vacuum the ceilings (grumble grumble _- if you EVER have the option of a 'smooth' ceiling of popcorn, choose smooth! The popcorn hangs onto everything. Our ceilings are 20' UP and everything hangs onto it. I need to rent some scaffolding and take down that popcorn crud, apply some tape (as I am sure it was a cheap-o job done by the contractor - and and then.. Well, then I'll have to paint.)
Sorry, offtopic there.. But, I like this hose and I would buy it again as it comes in handy, but you have to be aware that the minute the suction starts, it will attempt to retract itself back to fully 'compact' - if you are small, it might pull YOU rather than the vacuum.
The vacuum? The windtunnel is the BEST. I wouldn't have one of those silly 'bagless' types. Not with 2 big 4 legged biological hair manufacturing plants that are omnipresent in the house!

Nutone uses (in my opinion) cheap components. Bascially the buttons and contacts (internal) break and or wear out. This particular outdoor station uses a cheap button for ringing the doorbell. They should do relability tests at Nutone and build something that will last.』

Most are inexpensive, one replaces them and moves on, but to make a $40 doorbell replacement is a hard sell. I have replaced a number of these items. In the majority of cases the cheap little button switch is the cause of the failure, but the whole assembly needs be replaced. Use some clear silicone caulk after connecting,(AND testing), the assembly to seal the rear of the switch, and to seal the housing to the wall. (Good for travel) 『I purchased the space bag because my family was going to London to visit my sister and her husband. We could only take 2 medium bags due to a small car, and I would be traveling with a 16 month old. The bags worked great, but it was a little difficult due to the fact that you had to have a vacuum to suck out all the air. So if you don't have access, you can't use them. They did however, really free up some much needed space.』
(Works as advertised!) 『I was a bit concerned reading reviews of other combinations of these bags, but finally decided the price was worth the chance of them not working.
This purchase was primarily for the X-tra large bag, I've an oversized sleeping bag (roughly width of a full size bed) that no matter who rolled it up always took up the space of 2 normal bags. After fighting the monster into the storage bag and getting it sealed, I was pleasantly surpised to find the vacuum reduced the overall size to about 2/3 the volume of a normal sleeping bag.
Reports that the seal does not hold so far are not proving true. I now have three bags that have been sealed for 7 full days and there is no sign of leakage or the seal failing.
I did discover that the tab used to seal the bag really must be placed carefully to ensure that it places pressure correctly to fully seal the bag.
The battle with the sleeping bag demonstrated that the bags are fairly sturdy. I had been concerned about either splitting the seam of the bag or having inadvertently torn a hole in the plastic while trying to get the leverage to get the sleeping bag down past the "fill" line but neither occurred.
My one complaint is the tabs used to seal the bag, they have a tendancy to fall off when fillig the bag, and I'm concerned about the possiblity of losing them if the bags are moved around in storage.

Any of these types of users could find this book beneficial if he has a familiarity with basic electricity. The book does not include any introduction to electricity or electronics. Knowing the difference in triodes, pentodes, etc. will help a reader follow this book. The author occasionally uses terms like Class A amplifier, as well. Even so, with just a minimal familiarity with resistance, capacitance, inductance, Ohm's law, and the basic functions and components of tubes (e.g., heaters, cathodes, grids, and anodes), the reader can"get by."Readers can accrue real benefit without understanding everything presented.
The book has a chapter on tube testers that will interest many. The author's position is that testers can identify certain classes of performance anomalies but can't, in general, predict in-circuit performance or project life expectancy. He never makes an assertion without a technical explanation and an example. He covers desirable tester features and offers an interesting review of the four classes of testers as defined by the EIA.
The following examples of subjects covered will illustrate the levels of breadth and depth offered by the book: glass failures, heater failures, arching, getters, spurious emissions, inter-electrode leakage, pin-to-electrode interface resistance, cathode depletion, correlating measurements, quality control, design tolerances, standardization and reliability, hum/microphonics/noise,"why so many tube types"(historical perspective), life expectancy as a function of class of application, many causes of tube stress, how tube testers can stress and even damage tubes, and methods for lengthening tube life. Again, these are just examples. After reading this book, I immediately wanted to modify some of my own electronics, because I realized that a few changes could prolong the lives of some very expensive tubes!
While this book is not the easiest to read, it offers by far, the most in-depth treatment of tube failure modes that I've ever seen. I have a Ph.D. in physics that I acquired during the transition period between tubes and transistors. I still have my"Electronics in Engineering"textbook that was published in 1961, one year after this book. I've worked in areas of physics closely related to the physics of vacuum tubes, and I found no glaring errors in this book. I've been a life-long audiophile, and I'm a small-time antique electronics collector. This book has vastly increased my knowledge and understanding of the details of tube failure. I have to give it five stars, because it is definitely"best in class."It may well have an impact on tube electronics design in the future. Tube users owe a debt of gratitude to the Audio Amateur Press for reprinting it.』

I bought this supposed "industrial" or "professional" vac for its stated purpose: to clean-up drywall dust. I'm not a professional, just a homeowner rebuilding one house, part-time. That's all I needed the machine for.
We sand using a vacuum connected to a $35.00 screen sanding set-up, so that the dust goes directly into the vacuum, rather than creating clouds of dust and vacuuming later. The shop-vac worked, but not as efficiently as I expected for a claimed "drywall vac".
Out of the box the switch was bad but functioned, so I limped along with it for a while. I finally called shop-vac and they agreed to send me a new motor assembly hesitantly, even though it was well within warranty. I was told that they "don't manufacture the motor assembly". A cowardly way of saying "made by a 3rd party in China". When I got the new motor assembly the old switch started working better, so I waited to switch motor assemblies. The vac did work, but never had the power of my old $69.00 Craftsman machine.
Then, one day the motor stared to smell like it was burning up, so I immediately switched it out with the replacement. We went back to sanding and in no time that motor started to go bad and get noisier and noisier. Within 35 hours of run-time it was clear that the motor was nearly gone.
At this point it was apparent that I wasted my money buying a Chinese made toy under the guise of a brand name that no longer stands for quality. So, I was forced to do some research for a new machine and discovered the WAP Attix 8. Needless to say, I bought the WAP to replace the shop-vac garbage.
So far it does everything it claims to do, properly and far more quietly than ANY shop vac I have ever experienced. Although it costs more than I wanted to spend on a vac, I need to get the job done w/o endangering my family. I recommend the WAP 8 if you want to do drywall work. Mine came from Ultimate Garage which has extensive technical reviews and stands behind what they sell. You can find it here on Amazon as well.
In any event, buy what you're comfortable with, but DO NOT BUY SHOP VAC! (And for the record, I have nothing to do with WAP, I'm an experienced tool user but not a tool junky, I just want what I need to get my house fixed.)』

(OK, But Check the Other Shop-Vacs) 『I bought this shop-vac before starting a big DIY drywall project, and it's been OK. It has quite a bit of suction, and it has a long hose and power cord, so you can usually drag it around without too much trouble. It's not too loud, and so far, it's done fine. The only thing I really don't like is that the intake has a kind of L-curve (apparently to stop objects from slamming into the filter) that tends to trap drywall crumbs and paper until the hose is blocked. Cleaning drywall dust out of the trap is easy enough, but no fun.
The main thing I still don't know, and wish I did, is whether the vacuum is particularly suited to drywall (i.e., some kind of dust-resistant motor), or whether it's just a normal shop-vac with a HEPA filter and the drywall tools. If so, you might want to consider getting a different Shop-Vac plus the cleanstream filter, drywall tool attachments, and some drywall dust bags.
Here's what you could get if you chose a different vacuum:
1) A blower. Most of the new, relatively quiet shop-vacs don't function as a blower, because instead of one big exhaust port that you could hook to a hose, they have a bunch of smaller ports to reduce noice (slightly). This vacuum sucks (which is good), but doesn't blow (which might not be good, if you want a blower).
2) A pump. You can use this shop-vac to suck up water into the bucket, but you will have to pour out the bucket every ten gallons, or set the shop-vac someplace where it can drain and use a long hose. Some of the others come with a pump, so you can drain a basement or a swimming pool by sucking the water into your shop-vac and letting it pump uphill.
3) More suction. More suction is always good. The drywall shop-vac does fine for piles of drywall dust and sawdust, but there is always a little bit left. I often wonder whether a little more power would do a little better.
4) Bigger or smaller bucket size. I have no problem with 10 gallons, but you might want something smaller and more manueverable, or bigger so that you have to empty it less often.
5) Household clean-up tools. This vac comes with the 2 1/2 inch wide toolset, which isn't that great for cleaning your house or car.
