(Really needs more power.) 『I've had mine for about two years and while it's excellent for very small areas (about 1 to 1-1/2 square feet), it's really intended for spots about the size of a pet stain or spilled juice.
Some problems I've experienced over the past two years: 1) Battery life is marginal. I can get one, maybe two spots cleaned and then the unit needs to be charged overnight. So, if I have another spot, it waits until tomorrow. 2) The suction is decent, but in many cases (for me, at least) not quite adequate. I would recommend a good plug-in wet-dry vac to really get the water out. You'll find this device only sucks out about half the water it lays down. Good, but wish it were better.
On the plus side: 1) It's compact! It can go on trips in the van. And it fits in small spaces. 2) When you have a small spill, it's very convenient vs. dragging out an orchestra of cleaning devices, liquids, and tools.
Mixed thoughts: 1) The cleaning solution intended for this device is good, but I have had equal success with regular household cleaners (mild dish soap) and water on certain spills. Sometimes (if your carpet can handle it) Simple Green works reasonably well. The big drawback with the cleaning solution is that it's outrageously priced for the quantity you get.
Overall, it's a decent machine, but it's not terribly useful for general household cleaning or when you have a regular procession of stains to clean.』

(Not as good as Oreck bags) 『These bags fit my Oreck XL fine. However, they do not move air as efficiently as the Oreck bags. The reduced suction was immediately noticeable (the vacuum was much easier to push) with these bags. I assume part of it is the allergy filter technology. As a result I found that they need changing a little more frequently because the suction drops. I estimate they have about 2/3 the life of the Oreck bags I had before.
Also, these bags do not have the "Germstat" protection that inhibits mold and germs so if you vacuum certain things, like pet hair or pet litter or get any moisture into the bags they will start to have a bit of a funky smell after a while, whereas the Oreck bags produce much lower odor by comparison.
These bags are also made in China, which the manufacturer tries to obfuscate by printing "Made in P.R.O.C." on the packaging (PROC = People's Republic of China). They should just be honest and say "Made in China" for crying out loud.
Obviously the price for these bags is very good and so you can afford to change them twice as often and still come out ahead.

The new 7812 is a vast improvement over the old one, excluding the bags. The old bags you could empty and reuse until they were wore out maybe 5 times. The glue to hold them together held well. The 7812 bags are glued with extremely weak glue. If you're not careful when installing them the flange will separate. The seam on the back of the bag often blows out while vacuuming. Even with extreme care dumping the bags is next to impossible without ruining the bag. I believe the new bags were engineered so you could not reuse them and they succeeded.』
(These work great) 『There isn't that much exciting stuff to say about vacuum bags, but these are well engineered and even have a nice little flap that seals the hole so dust doesn't escape after you take the bag out of the vacuum.
I highly recommend using bags with this vacuum as it allows you to suck up a lot more dust between emptying, and saves wear and tear on the HEPA filter. These seem to last a long time and hold a lot of sawdust or drywall dust.』

(Dust is my enemy.) 『Dust has not always been my enemy, but I got tired of it and decided to do something about it. I really dislike sanding dust, especially from dry-wall mud. I tried various shop vacs, wearing them out while wondering if the noise was better than the dust. Porter Cable to the rescue.
I bought their first shop vacuum when it came out perhaps 15 years ago. It is still going strong, although I can no longer buy parts (or bags) for it. That old model had a few design faults, as the plastic attachment holders would last for only a day or so, but mine is still running strong, and the filter is still working.
However, I needed to get a new model so I could buy bags. The old model works pretty well without bags for wood sanding dust and cleaning the shop, but dry-wall dust needs bags.
So Amazon to the rescue, as they had a great price on the new models of the Porter Cable vacuums. And now I get to use bags again. I buy them six at a time, and use them for all the dry dust I am picking up, not just dry-wall mud. The nasty stuff is easy to dispose of without making a mess. And I can convert from dry to wet and back to dry quickly when needed. The filter stays clean far longer, and since I am not handling the filter as much, it lasts longer.
So get a Porter Cable shop vacuum and buy the bags. The vacuum is quieter than most, there are two sizes, it turns on with your sander, there are great Porter Cable sanders that work with it, the end of the hose can be quickly changed to fit the tool dust port, and the attachment holders now work and don't easily break. Oh, and it does what vacuums should: pick up dust and keep it in the vacuum, not spew it back out into the air. It shows when the bag or container is full. It must be pretty hard to crush the hose, as I have not been able to do it.

The Blueair 403 unit (at least the one I received) actually has 4 speeds, just like the Blueair 402! Even the manufacturer's own website as of this review lists it as having only 3 speeds. The only difference between the 402 and 403 is that the 403 comes with a small electronic timer that is magnetic (you can put it on your refrigerator or on the Blueair unit itself) which shows you when 6 months are up and it's time to replace the filter. This is handy, but not really needed. So, if you can still find a 402 (now discontinued) for a good price, I'd recommend you grab it!
This is a great unit but it is a bit larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing. It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with. In fact, the first night I had it, I put it on the 3 speed setting and found the sound quiet nice and relaxing.
It works very well and is more efficient and quieter than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 403 works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it pre-charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, and has a larger, thicker filter). The 403 also has a deeper, more soothing and relaxing sound than the smaller unit. Because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and outputs air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E unit as it has the filter on the back and outputs air out the top. Also, larger units like the 500 series output air out the top (and sides) so you would not be able to put something on top of those either. I'm not saying I would use my Blueair 403 as a bookshelf or anything, just that it can be convenient to place a magazine or book or two on the top surface at times.
I will now buy a second 403 unit for my living room because I am so impressed. Having two or more of the same series in different rooms throughout the house seems a benefit as you only have one type of filter to buy for them all. However, if your living room is on the large side, you may need a larger unit (such as the 500 series so check your square footage). Note that the 500 series is *much* louder though.
All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is *very* quiet and well made. I feel I sleep much better with this unit on and also have much less allergy symptoms including less red and itchy eyes. Even if you don't suffer from allergies, you can still benefit from having nice fresh air all the time. My guess is that you will sleep better and feel more rested when you wake up. this fact was confirmed by the manufacturer (plaston) customer service person (maria) i spoke to on the phone. i was told that if i wanted a humidifier, i should get one - this product is an air washer.
the product does capture the large dust particles in the room - i see them in the pan, and it (subjectively) does feel easier to breathe if you have allergies.
as far as humidification goes, it failed to increase the humidity by more than 1-2% from the initial ~35%. the room is in manhattan, it is 17x17ft, the unit was run for 24 hrs straight at high setting and evaporated ~1.9 gallons of water at room temperature ~75F. it was a couple of feet away from the walls and the vents, and the humidity measurements were taken with WS-9410TWC hygrometer. the windows/doors were closed.
after i conducted the test and verified the results with the manufacturer customer services representative, i was told that i should get a humidifier.
i will be returning this product and getting a separate humidifier and an air purifier instead.』
(Great Air Washer) 『Was looking for a device that would humidify the air but not use filters that needed changing, which adds cost, plus filters provide a good medium for bacteria growth if not changed frequently. So, after doing a lot of research I found the Air-O-Swiss 1355 Air Washer, which by spec, should meet my criteria. Ordered through Amazon, which I must say was a great experience and fast service. (Wick/Filter free evaporative humidifier) 『I chose this unit because, although it costs a bit more initially and humidifies at a slower rate than other cool-mist technologies, it is easier and cheaper for me to maintain, and intrinsically cannot cause "white-dust" or a "falling cloud of cool mist" like the ultrasonic units might.
I've been very happy with it over the past few months. I use a liquid anti-microbial agent and do not use the ionic silver stick.
This technology is very similar to evaporative "wick" models. However, because many plastic discs are used instead of a wick, there is no wick to replace or get moldy. If the discs should ever get moldy, they can be cleaned in the dishwasher or by hand.

(Best Humidifier I've Owned) 『...And I've owned many. I've tried the traditional "wick" humidifiers, steam vapor, ultrasonic, and even ones with pumps. None can compare to the convenience and reliability of the Air-O-Swiss, though.
Steam Vapor ran my electric bill through the roof (it eats electricity like crazy). Ultrasonic created white dust that got into everything, no matter how small the crevice (even got on the CD inside my CD-ROM drive). As for the one with pumps? Um, the pumps burned out after 2 months.
My traditional wick humidifier was the most reliable of my previous humidifiers, but wicks need constant replacement (which can get expensive if you live in an arid region like me) and their performance degrades as you use them more (eventually even with frequent cleaning, they will just not absorb water any more and the reservoir on your humidifier will frustratingly be full).
The Air-O-Swiss works like a wick-based humidifier, except instead of a wick it uses slowly rotating plastic discs (about a dozen of them)to increase the surface area of water-to-air contact. A fan facilitates the flow of air through the housing. It does a great job of keeping the air breathable, and thus keeps my associated allergies at bay, but it's also so quiet that I can't even tell it's on unless I put my hand over the inlets/outlets to feel the air flow.
The simplicity of its design lends to its reliability (it's just a fan and a motor to turn the discs very slowly). It doesn't have any wicks that need to be replaced, though it still needs regular cleaning (to get rid of mineral buildup). I've had it for about 3 months now and have had no problems with it. After trying so many different types of humidifiers, I was almost ready to just settle for my old wick-based humidifier (for which I was spending about 20$ a month in wicks).
