(Stopped working after just 1 year)

(Powerful - but noisy little vacuum)

(A lot more powerful than you'd think.)

(One problem)

(A lot to live up to)
We were pleased with the vacuum until it stopped working only a year after we purchased it. After a search on replacement parts, I found that it would cost $80+ for a replacement battery/motor, assuming that I installed it myself. The unit saw low to moderate use--it was our primary device for cleaning a staircase. Now, it only cleans a single step or two before losing its charge. For a $60 product, I expect to have more than a year's use from it. I'd also hope that replacement parts wouldn't cost more than half the product...instead of roughly 150% the cost.
This handheld is a great improvement over the 3 year-old Black and Decker that it replaces. But is it very noisy. That not too much of a problem in typical use Finally we have a handheld that rivals a full vacuum cleaner in suction for those short jobs when it is too much trouble to get the big cleaner out.
We got this vacuum to clean up around one of our litter boxes, but found that it's really great for the whole house. It's especially great for our shared computer office/work room because it's much easier to vacuum up around all of the tables, chairs, cabinets and various wires. You do have to empty it out quit often, but it's a minor inconvenience compared to how nice it is not to have to pull out a larger vacuum any more than once a week.
For all the design innovation here, this is just a "dustbuster" with a few quirks. Mostly good ones.

Pros: 18V! It's 30% more powerful than any previous B&D dustbuster. The canister filter is very large for a handheld vac, and it's protected from larger debris by both the cyclone design by a washable plastic filter cover.
It has an extendable nozzle built in for reaching in between your car seats.

Con: The canister is not removable!!!!! And by "not removable," I mean even with a screwdriver and some mechanical know how, you won't want to. The screws are very small, stiff, and awkwardly located. If you were to pour water in the canister, it would go to the motor. So the best you can give it is a wipe down with a damp towel.

After reading numerous reviews I finally purchased this vacuum. I must admit that I was a little disappointed with the suction since I have 2 dogs and a lot of hair. This vacuum keeps up pretty well considering I do have 2 dogs and a lot of hair! Overall it's a great vacuum and a nice design.
No matter how diligent you are at keeping your home clean, everyday spills and dirt occur. Dust happens. Now you can go to your closet and grab your upright or canister vacuum cleaner or you can grab this Black&Decker PHV1800CBE 18V Cordless Hand Vacuum Cleaner. I'd put the emphasis on the latter. This Dustbuster is a handheld vac that's light yet gutsy. It'll tackle those daily accidents that produce dust and dirt. Use it around the dining table after a family meal. Pick up the fallen after watching (and eating) by the TV. This rechargeable vac is one of the most handy appliances around. Relax, enjoy, and remember daily messes only require a few moments to clean with the Black&Decker PHV1800CBE 18V Cordless Hand Vacuum Cleaner. 3 Stage Filtration Provides Clean Air Exhaust Folds for compact charging and storage 2-Speed Switch - High Speed for Maximum Pick-Up or Low Speed for Extended Battery Run Time Approved by Energy-Star

(cordless vac)

(Super powerful handheld vac)

(great for the price)

(Hand vac)
I wanted to wait awhile before writing a review, and I am glad I did, because I am sooo impressed. This is far and away the best vacuum of its type I have ever used. First, the motorized brush was a great idea. It helps remove those often clingy things like hair that just don't want to leave their resting place. And I can't say enough about the suction; it has to be at least twice as powerful as the Black&Decker I owned before. And last, when not in use, the battery holds its charge for a very long time. No, I do not work for the company -- I am just an ordinary guy who wanted, and found, the perfect vacuum for his car.
I liked the first one so well, I just bought another. The little brush head is an exellent feature. Instead of trying to keep up with the head and crevice tool, I put a small velcro on the side of the vac for the crevice tool. Works great. i highly recomend this product.
For its size, it's a very mighty little vacuum. I've had others, but this one really seems to pick up, and the power brush is a bonus. I've been careful with the charger and made certain to fully discharge it and then not overcharge the unit after reading some of the reviews on the batteries. So far it's working just great!
have owned it for 3 weeks now. It works great. The motorized brush is a bonus, which I haven't tried yet. Great value in terms of price/power, with the added bonus of the brush.
This is a vac I would tell anyone that needs a handvac to purchase this one.Works great.

(NOT TOO BAD)

(One of the worst purchases!!!)

(Jiffy steamer)

(Jiffy Steamer J-2000)

(Love it!)
Its a good product. When i first bought this, I steamed everything.
But my use gradually tapered off. I did find other uses; had the steamer melt the tape residue that was stuck to a window.

The product quality is there. and if any thing is broken, you can actually order a specific part for the machine and replace it instead of throwing the entire machine out. I like that.

If anything, you should order the model with the interchangeable heads so you can use the machine to steam more than just clothes, such as mold/mildew and cleaning. it'll be more expensive but you can squeeze out more uses.

other than that, if you only need to steam clothes.. find a cheaper one with the clothes hanger bar. after all, as long as the machine produces consistent steam, its exactly the same but cheaper!

This product will NOT replace your iron if you are used to the crisp "iron look". I really wanted it to work because the shirt ironing takes a lot of time and according to Jiffy Steamer's description I would save time AND money for dry cleaning. Well, first of all, I did not save time at all, it actually took me longer and the shirt (100% cotton) was still covered with little wrinkles everywhere (just like when you iron on a very low setting). Second, I burned myself several times on the metal part of the hose, which gets extremely hot and on the steam itself (honestly, I think they have to include some sort of gloves and insulate the hose). Third, this product is leaking. While I was steaming the shirt, I moved the steamer closer and there was water on my hard wood floors! Also, after I was done with the steaming and trying to disassemble the steamer, water poured from everywhere, the hose as well as the metal bin. All in all, I would have never purchased this product, have I known that it has so many issues and on top of that I have to pay for return shipping!!!
An excellent steamer for the money. I had planned to buy a commercial grade model, but decided to buy this model instead since it only took 2 minutes to heat up versus 15 minutes or more for the commercial grade models. This one is a much better quality than the one that I am replacing which I bought at a local department store at least 5 years ago. These steamers pay for themselves by saving money on drycleaning billls. Even if I pay my housekeeper to steam my clothes, she is able to steam 3 times as many clothes as she can iron in the same time period. Like I said, this steamer is money well spent.
I purchased the Jiffy Steamer after having gone through Rowenta steamers. Both of my Rowentas lasted a year. I love the Jiffy. It is sturdy and well-made. The pole that holds the steamer arm is much more solid than the Rowenta. It heats up quickly and delivers substantial steam. The only problem is that the cord is a little short. I would recommend this. I just hope it lasts longer than the Rowenta.
This steamer is everything I hoped it would be. I had been using a small portable hand-held model for about a year, creeping along with only being able to steam maybe 3 articles of clothing at a time before having to stop&refill. I finally decided to spring for one of these after reading reviews&researching different models. What an amazing purchase! I can do a whole weeks worth of wardrobe for my businessman husband at a time without stopping! It's actually fun to do now&I look forward to this 'chore'. Very user friendly, I don't have one negative thing to say about it, this Jiffy works like a charm! My husband knew how agrivated i'd get trying to steam his clothes with the little one, so the first time he saw me using this one, I kept exclaiming over&over how easier it was&how better it worked&how much I loved it,..he didn't even gripe about the cost! lol
Get professional results at home with this garment steamer. Steam is the gentlest, safest, most efficient way to remove wrinkles. Not only is steaming five times faster than ironing, it will not scorch even the most delicate fabrics. Safe for use on clothing, wallpaper, drapes, furniture and most any fabric to remove wrinkles quickly and easily. Compact, lightweight unit moves easily on casters, utilizes a 120 volt current, and has an unbreakable low profile easy to handle one gallon water reservoir. Over 1.5 hours of steam per filling. Uses a 1300 watt heating element, die cast in solid brass. Quick two minute heat up time. High impact plastic handle is attached to 5-1/2 foot flexible hose. Safety wiring feature temporarily turns the unit off when it runs dry. Moderate assembly required, assembly wrench is included. .
This sturdy, durable wand steamer presses wrinkles out of garments, drapes, and upholstery quicker and easier than an iron, and it doesn't "shine" or scorch fabrics like an iron can. Wand steamers are popular in the fashion and entertainment fields, where wardrobe crews must keep clothing immaculate while working quickly. This 1,300-watt steamer shoots high-velocity steam jets out of a 6-inch-wide head to smooth any fabric from sheer silk to thick wool. A removable water tank provides up to 90 minutes of steaming time. The steamer heats in a minute and then rolls to work on sturdy casters. Garments and drapes can be pressed where they hang, including closets, or garments can be hung from a loop atop the steamer's sturdy aluminum rod, which screws together to rise 62 inches above the floor. For storage, the rod has a holder for the wand.

Indicative of the steamer's quality is the brass fitting attaching the hose to the tank. (A wrench to tighten the fitting is included, and it has magnets for storage on the base.) Other features include an automatic safety shutoff if the steamer runs dry and a stay-cool wand handle. The steamer's plastic base measures 11 inches wide, 17 inches high, and 14-1/2 inches deep. The steamer carries a one-year warranty against defects.--Fred Brack

customer 's review
(I love Chrome but...)

(Psychedelic Mayhem)
I just can't get into Helios's solo albums. I got this one being excited about this release because I loved the latest Chrome album Ghost Machine(see my review for that album) But I just find this album to be boring and at times annoying. The first track on here is simply titled Intro which seems cool for it's experimental value but it goes on a little too long(3 and a half minutes to be exact). Then we get into Beginning Of Light which might be the best on here but it's nothing special. The guitar work is cool and the rhythems are interesting but it's just Helios repeating the line Beginning Of Light over and over again in an echo effect. Got To Have Someone is just dead. It's lifeless and the vocals are ear screaching bad. Sandbox Jungle is a song I couldn't believe what I heard. It sounds just like a Wolfmother song. Even the lead singer sounds like the guy from Wolfmother. Fields Of Green is a decent song. Great drum beat and good rhythem and lead guitars. Probably the most Chrome sounding song on this album and the only other one I can listen to. Help me Bitch is just awful. It's just noise and more ear screeching vocals. The comes the Velvet Underground cover. I've never liked VU anyway so that for me is reason enough to skip this song and the cover itself like most of the album is very boring. Another Dimension is pretty catchy and one I can sit through. This one sounds like a psychadelic/space rock song similar to Hawkwind. Tell me your name is just a short 50 second song that has a female singing on it that is pointless. I haven't heard much of the rest of this album. I just can't bring myself to listen to it. It's either too boring or too painful. Helios is about to go on tour and I was planing on seeing him in Houston. I sure hope he plays some Chrome songs because his solo stuff just doesen't cut it for me and I have 5 or 6 of his solo albums. Some people might like this but I have tried and tried and I just can't get into it. any of the classic Chrome albums from Alien Soundtracks up to 3rd From The Sun are masterpieces to me along with 2002's Ghost Machine(again see my review) For his solo stuff it just seems like there is something missing.
This is by far the best Helios Creed album ever! The intro (Deep Blue Love Vaccum) sets the mood building up to launch into the riff of the next track "Beginning Of Light" equipped with warped vocals and swirling guitars. Fabienne Shine (from Chrome back in the day) does an awesome song called "Sandbox Jungle" the riff is very Black Sabbath esque. She also sings vocals on the cover of the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties." One of Helios darkset prophecy songs to date "2012." One of the best tracks is a fun song about our retarded leader called "Cowboy." Over an hour long this is one of the best records to come out in a long time.
Legendary psych guitar wizard HELIOS CREED returns with what many of his loyal fans are considering his BEST solo effort ever, with "Deep Blue Love Vacuum." On this album he teams up with fellow ex-members of seminal band CHROME to create over 70 minutes of interplanetary, reality bending sounds to carry the listener to another plane. Helios is back on the road as well. This is his first release on Noiseville Records.

(I'm just disappointed)

(Excellent!)

(Great Bug Killer)

(It works!)

(So far so good!)
I bought this Bug Vac because my friend told me she uses one. What a bust. I was a little skeptical because of some of the more negative reviews, but I figured it might be worth it to have something help me catch the roaches (I live in Texas). The vac works but ONLY on hard, flat, smooth surfaces and ONLY with smaller bugs. It will not suck up the giant tree roaches we sometimes get. So, mine sits in its charger most of the time.
This vacuum is now one of my favorite possessions. It sucks up everything from little spiders to cockroaches (shudder). With some of the bigger bugs, I recommend leaving the vacuum on and holding it vertically with the nozzle pointing up until you smell the bug sizzle. That way it will definitely be dead when you go to throw it away.
I always had to drag out the vacuum to get spiders off the ceiling. Now I just grab this bug sucker - it is quicker and quieter.
The only problems are the vacuum isn't as hi-powered as a real vacuum and the end doesn't mush right into a corner to get at a bug. However, I am really pleased I bought this.

I love this vacuum. It works! You can capture a bug and release it outside or zap it. It has fantastic suction; I haven't yet found a bug, or spider that it can't deal with. I thoroughly recommend this product.
So far I like this item very much, and its doing the job, killing the bugs! Love the fact that it zaps them so you know they are really dead!
Even if you liked childhood tales about spiders and bugs, it's a different story when they get inside your house. This bug vacuum will trap, zap and dispose of insects without having to touch them. Unit sits in charging base, ready to use at any time. Unit can reach spiders in hard-to-reach corners. (Does what it does (better than you'd think!))

(Under performs for the money...)

(good brush but can be found cheaper)

(AudioQuest LP record cleaner)

(does the job)
Well I bought this just because dust is everywhere and tends to collect on my vinyls. The first time I used it I took out an old jazz album that was pretty dusty, and surprisingly it picked up a lot of stuff! I then got a newer vinyl that is kept very clean (yet had a little dust on it) just to see how it works with that. After a few spins, it seemed to collect like 97% of the dust! The design is nice, but it could have been made out of metal or something. Still it works great, and I use it all the time (sometimes on my computer screen too). I hate you dust...

At this price, I would have expected more from the product, especially considering it loses (micro thin hair like) bristles easily, which can be difficult to remove from the record using the brush itself.

I bought this same brush under a different name at a local record store for 10 dollars. It works as good as any brush. Like it has been said you push it with the bristles facing towards the driection your pushing to get all most of the dust out.
The AudioQuest LP record cleaner brush does an excellent job of dry cleaning records and also reduces static levels. Previously used the Discwasher brush and liquid cleaner system along with a pizo-electric antistatic "gun" to accomplish the same tasks. AudioQuest's brush is quicker and easier to use and accomplishes both tasks with one product. If your records have not been well maintained, you probably will need a product that includes a cleaning solution to get satisfactory results.
I got this to clean my records prior to digitizing with a USB turntable. First I used a swiffer duster to get most of the dust off, followed by a couple of passes with the Audioquest.
designed to safely clean vinyl records -- works great on LCD screens and keyboards too * contains more than one million conductive carbon fibers * eliminates static electricity while removing dust and fine particles * rotating handle on brush cleans the bristles *

This disc covers Tom Bearden's early years and background, and leads into an illustrated lecture by Tom about the vacuum and the secrets of engineering and extracting its boundless energy. After this, Tom discusses virtually everything you ever wanted to know about his patented Motionless Electromagnetic Generator (the MEG), which he co-invented with several other colleagues.Tom, John Bedini, Walt Rosenthal, and Peter Lindemann then conduct a brief historical overview of the history of free energy devices, going back to the late 1800s. And finally, Tom wraps things up with a penetrating summation that gets right to the heart of what has to be done. It is fair to say that the information on this DVD is not available anywhere else in the media catalogs of the world - and much of this information is in the public arena for the first time.

(Eurika belt is good, however installing it is not as easy)

(no one I can drive to seems to sell this)

(Eureka Type R belt)

(All reviews considered, a useful life of 3 minutes is still brief)

(The Belt Will Work for a Long Time If Properly Adjusted)
There is no problem with the belt itself. However installing it and making it work is not a trivial task. If you are handy person and can make changes on the fly to make it work, that is good. Otherwise have a technision take care ot it.
As long as the chain stores don't carry it, I am sure I will be back!
Looked locally and felt the prices were too high (approx 2x). I paid a much more reasonable price and shipping cost for a replacement item. I hope that this belt will last a similar time to the previous one (approx 4yrs). Straightforward to install.
The belt that came with the vacuum was tough and worked>1y till a week or so ago. I replaced it a few minutes ago with this product, using two on-line versions of directions plus common sense, and I didn't even cross the room before it broke again.
Two floors, three vacuums, all Eurekas. If only the belts were as strong as an O-ring....

What can one say about a belt; it either works or it doesn't.

I've noticed complaints about the belt breaking frequently on the Eureka 4870. I think that is due in large part to the manual operation of the height adjustment.

The height should be adjusted to the highest level that actually works on the carpet being vacuumed. If it is adjusted too low, the resistance from the carpet versus the powerful motor on the 4870 stresses the belt too much and it breaks.

I've used the same belt on my 4870 for well over two years and it seems to be as good as new. I have a fairly thick carpet and adjust the height to the next to the highest position for most of the carpeted areas of the house. We have some rugs and other carpeted areas where I need to drop the height down, but usually the third level down from the highest works well on those. Properly adjusted the 4870 cleans very well, fluffs up the carpet, and extends the belt life.

The bottom line on this is if you don't stress the belt by adjusting the height too low for the carpet; the belt can last for years.

(vacuum bags)

(functions well)

(They perform well)

(vaccuum bags)

(Real OEM bags)
Service was very good from the vendor. The bags work just fine. The only thing I am disappointed in is that the bags are made in China. I think next time I will just buy the bags locally, even though they cost a little bit more, as the local vendor carries bags made in the U.S. Otherwise, the service and product from the supplier was very good.
This vacuum cleaner bag is durable, easy to install and easy to remove; there's always enough space so that you can fold it down while removing it, meaning the dust doesn't fly allover in the process.
The item has never ripped, which is what I worried might happen.

Works perfectly well. The bag performs the task for which it was designed without compromise. Attractive price on Amazon.
It was easier to order online than to find the right bags in the store. Plus I can't find a store that carries them. Shipping was free and they were here really quick.
Ok price, about $2 per bag, as there are three bags in the package. Price is the same as local stores or $6 for the three-bag package.

I went for the 4 for the price of 3 offer (25% off) plus an additional item to make up for the free shipment. Not seen it at a dollar per bag as another indicated.

(Good, but small and pricey)

(Worth every penny!)

(It's In The Bag)

(Excellent Product and Service)

(Worth the extra expense)
These bags work well, they do not rip and do not let any dust past them. The tab for the sliding hole cover breaks off easily. I now try to get the sliding cover moving on the new bag before I install it into the vaccuum.

If you own Electrolux EL 7020B Oxy3 Ultra Canister Vacuum, there is not much choice, but to buy these bags.

I love these Clinic Vacuum Bags, they do a wonderful job of keeping all the debris in the bag and not clogging up the fan system of the vacuum. I have only used the anti-allergy Clinic bags, and not the regular vacumm bags, but I wouldn't give up the Clinic for anything! They are more costly, but worth every penny to me and I am willing to pay the extra expense for a quality product.
These are excellent bags. Note that they are much more efficient than the bags which are cheaper. 99% versus 90%.
Being more than two hours from the nearest store, purchasing on-line was a wonderful alternative. The price was competitive and the delivery was as promised. I am very pleased with the ease in which I found, ordered and received the merchandise. Good job.
These vacuum cleaner dust bags offer superior air filtration without compromising suction. They are certainly well worth the extra expense. I highly recommend them.

(No more canned air!)

(Data-Vac ED500 Electric Duster)

(This item blows! (dust to the next county))

(I will never buy canned air ever again...)

(A great alaternative to compressed air/vacuum to clean PC's)
This thing is more powerful than a vacuum cleaner. I was stunned at the amount of air this little machine puts out! True, it is loud, but, it's so powerful the noise can be overlooked.

As for the price, when one adds up the cost of canned air over the life of a computer, camera, etc. I think $50.00 is more than reasonable.

100% satisfied.

I bought this duster to use on my computer but I will also use it to clean my camera gear. I'm sure I can find other uses for it too. It works as advertised.
This duster is so powerful! Much more power than canned air. I haven't had to to put the micro nozzles on it yet. I'm guessing you use those if you need to cut through metal! But seriuosly, this is the best solution to canned air. I've been wasting money on canned air for nearly 10 years of computer repair, and just recently was going to by a compressor for my tech bench... Until I found this product. For $50 it can't be beat!

The only issue is that the motor gets warm fast (no warmer than a vacuum motor)... But you only run it for a few minutes at a time and it has a 5 year motor warranty. So I'm not concerned.

Highly recommended!

I manage about 1000 computers and would go through a lot of canned air. With this unit cleaning out computers, keyboards etc. is a breeze ;).
For many years I have used a portable vacuum to clean out my customer's computers when I make house calls. While I still sometimes use a portable Vacuum with plastic attachments to clean out PC's, I have switched to mainly using the Metro DataVac Electric Duster.

This nifty electric duster is basically one of Metro's powerful vacuum motors enclosed in a small can. It comes with many attachments and outputs a very powerful and consistent stream of air. Unlike expensive air cans which become cold and loose their power after a few minutes of use, the Electric Duster blows hard as long as you need it to.

Some of the cons to using this instead of a vacuum is the fact you will need to take the PC outside to blow it out otherwise dust will go everywhere. It runs on standard 120v AC so you will need to have a plug available within range of the (ample) 15ft or so foot cord. If you use it continuously for more than 5 minutes or so the air and can becomes very hot but not so hot that it will burn you or cause problems for the PC. It is also VERY loud, louder than most Vacuums.

The positives vs vacuuming the PC, or using a standard compressed air can, outweigh the negatives. The risk of accidentally damaging a component or creating a static discharge when using a vacuum is higher (although I have never had this happen). A vacuum will do a good job at cleaning the PC, but the force of the air stream from the Electric Duster is very powerful and reaches cracks and crevasses to blow out dust in places which the vacuum will not get to. Aside from the massive savings compared to compressed air cans, you also have no problem turning the Electric Duster upside down or at any angle to position it - compressed air cans will blow ice out if you turn them upside down. The Electric Duster is also much smaller and easier to carry around than my portable vacuum. Finally, the Electric Duster is environmentally friendly compared to compressed air cans or even Vacuums which you have to throw away the bags etc.

While the Electric Duster is a bit pricey, for those of you who buy a lot of compressed air this is a must have replacement.

The DataVac Electric Duster features an all-steel body with high-quality plastic compound fittings built to last. It blows clean, dry, filtered air that is condensation-free and completely safe for all computer/electronic equipment, printers, copiers, fax machines, digital cameras, etc. Air Flow - 70CFM Weight - 2.75 lbs. Attachments Air-Pin-Pointer, Air-Concentrator nozzle, Air-Flare nozzle and 4-piece detailing tool kit Power cord - 12 ft. Filter - E/Z-change foam Manufacturer's lifetime warranty Contains no dangerous propellants

(Excellent replacement)

(big pain no gain)

(same issues - short product life)

(No staying power)

(Didn't last long)
It was a life saver to read all the previous purchasers and their stories. I was ready for the hassle of replacing non-user replaceable part. That readiness was sure needed as I wiggled a big knife through the glued up battery casing.

I am happy with the result. iRobot is an excellent product and they didn't use cheapest possible battery for their Roomba but this Tenergy batteries are one of the latest and it does hold the juice very well. Now I have my casing glue removed, I can forever keep my Roomba going. I love you iRobot! I hope you do more! My next lawn mower has to be from iRobot.

I, like some of the other reviewers, only got about 10 uses out of this battery before it quit holding a charge. By this I mean, it runs for 1 second and sings "come and find me"... which isn't as fun as usual because he will still be sitting at your feet. I used the roomba's service mode to run the wheels continuously to drain the battery down to zero. After a long day-long charge, it again rain for 1 second and stopped. No gain. Sad roomba.

The pain part is that it took forever to crack open my old APS battery as mine was very thoroughly sealed shut. I would recommend trying to open your battery before buying a kit like this to make sure you have one that is easy to open. Once open, the new battery kit does not fit quite right and required some force to get it in the old battery case. Then the new wires do not come with friction fittings or any other kind of connector.. just bare wires requiring soldering skills.. and a soldering iron.

Spend the extra $$ and get an irobot NiCD battery.. roomba just may not be compatible with the NiMH or I received a defective product. 2 stars if all you need is the triangular screwdriver and a blue and red doorstop.

this worked amazing for about 6 months of light use - it would run and run and run.
too bad that a few weeks ago, the run time went from 1.5 hour + to only about 10 minutes. I know NiMH batteries dont last forever, but with this light use it seems like i should have gotten at least a year's use from this

Originally, I was very happy with the replacement cells for the Roomba APS battery, but after about 6 months of cleaning 3x per week runtime has decreased dramatically. Now, my scheduler discovery won't run for more than 15 minutes regardless of attempts to discharge and recondition.

As others have noted, if you plan on keeping your Roomba running, either buy the iRobot OEM battery and have it last a year and a half (like mine) or bite the bullet and find Li-ion cells.

These batteries got used 5 times and then wouldn't hold a charge anymore. Now that iRobot has lowered their battery packs I'll be buying them from iRobot.

(Poorly Manufactured Item -- Do Not Buy)
The plastic that these bags are made of is way too thin to be practical. The bags rip very easily, even when used exactly as the manufacturer specifies. For the money you pay for what is essentially a plastic seal-lock bag with a valve, you'd think you would get a bag that utilized a thicker sheet of plastic. Also, the bags do not keep their seal. The valve itself can keep the air in after the air is vacuumed out, but not over an extended period of time. Perhaps the manufacturer could make the screw-on cap, more reliable. Perhaps the seams of the plastic bag are not sufficient. Perhaps the bags could be made more durably, I'm not sure, but this product is really poorly made.

Bottom line is that this product does not do what it advertises, it is built in a very shoddy fashion, it breaks easily, it doesn't keep the vacuum seal (and the space saving advantages are lost). Do NOT buy this product.

Improve your closet storage by using the Space Bag Combo. The set comprises 1 extra large size and 1 large size space bag. Bulky items like bedding, heavy jackets, etc. that usually take up a lot of storage can be stored in these space saving bags. This storage organizer is multilayered to give additional protection to the items inside it. Remove the excess air through the one-way valve on these space bags using vacuum. This reduces the overall size of the filled space bags and frees up storage space. Make these space bags completely airtight by locking them with the Sure-Zip slider. This keeps the contents safe from dust, insects, etc. The space bags are watertight too, keeping at bay moisture, damp, etc. These space saving bags can be used for storage under the bed, etc., and can also reused whenever the need arises.

(fantastic coffee! very fresh)

(Excellent coffee)
I was hesitant to order coffee online, but this Joe's Coffee is very fresh. You can see the bean oils in the bag. Very impressed. You get a whole pound, when was the last time you saw an actual pound of coffee? This is really good stuff with a hint of butterscotch. Worth a try.
I have tried different coffees from all over the world and i must say that this coffe is in my top 3. Im not big on reviews all i can say is try it.
Yauco Selecto coffee is grown at the highest points in the Southwestern mountains of Puerto Rico at elevations over 3,000 feet. A limited production coupled with the highest quality standards produce a rich full bodied coffee with a creamy buttery flavor and hints of malty chocolate undertones and a distinctive floral aroma.

Candied chestnuts are without question a labor of love. The chestnuts are first sorted to eliminate those that are not perfectly round or smooth. They are then boiled, peeled by hand, and sorted once again. Finally, the chestnuts are cooked for two days in a rich vanilla syrup until the flavor and sugar seeps into the very heart of the chestnut.

(wish the handle would stay up)

(Okay, but not for kids just beginning to walk)

(Great Gift)

(Grandson loves the learning mower!)

(My Son loves this toy)
this mower makes a bunch of different noises and is very fun for my daughter. I just wish that the handle would stay up.
Easy to assemble and makes neat sounds that my 1-year old son really seemed to find interesting. The handle, as many have pointed out, does not stand up. The mower rolls freely without friction, so kids who are still learning how to walk will fall if they try to use the mower to steady themselves. That's why I gave it three stars. We just got it, though, so that might be revised. If you're looking for a walking toy to give little ones confidence while they find their feet, this is probably not what you want.
I purchased this toy for my 14 month great nephew as a Christmas gift. I read a few of the reviews, and I will agree the toy is loud. My newphew loves it! My niece said that he's still going strong two weeks after xmas. I gave it a 3 stars for it's educational value, since you can barely hear the "abc" song.
My grandson loves his Fisher-Price learning mower! He 'mows' all around the living room with it. He had seen one at a birthday party he attended and couldn't keep his hands off it. My daughter loves the fact that the handle is collapsible, so it can be stored easily under something.
My 18 month old loves this toy, can play with it for a long period of time. Cons: The handle isn't stationary so it took him about 30 minutes to figure out that he can't go too fast or the handle falls. The other con it is loud so I put it away after a while but he really loves this toy. Outside playing would be perfect but we let him play in the house.

(Keeps his attention!)

(Spend you money somewhere else!)

(Been fun)

(Waste of money!)

(Over Rated)
My 10-1/2 month son absolutely loves this toy. He typically goes from one thing to the next and does not sit still. However, when he played with this toy at his grandparents' house he sat for 25 minutes pushing it back and forth. So, we they suggested we take this toy home with us. In the past week, he's learned how to walk much better and is now walking around pushing it. If your child has had any interest in your vacuum, consider a toy vacuum cleaner. This one is a bit noisy, though you can turn the volume off and it still entertains our little guy. My mother bought it at a garage sale and it still works great - so very durable.
Thank goodness I didn't have to buy this toy for the listed price, I got it a a garage sale almost brand new for 50 cents. I was soo excited with my garage sale find and couldn't wait to get home and let my daughter try it out. It is the most worthless piece of plastic ever. What a dissapointing toy. It is so hard for my 1 and a 1/2 year old to push around. It is even hard for me to push when I am playing with her. It only gets one star from me for the cuteness factor and for the fact that it has an off switch. I do not reccommed this to anyone!
Both my son and daughter love it. Draw back, it's your normal noisy talking toy.
This is a very short toy and is akward for a child to walk and push. Also goes off easily so if you are walking by be perpared for it to go off. It does have an on and off switch but i like to keep toys on so if my daughter goes to play with them it will make noise.
For $25 this toy doesn't do much. It is loud and only says a few things. My 18 month will play with it for a little while but it's not too exciting. I was kind of disappointed and glad I didn't pay full price.
Pretend homemakers will love "vacuuming" with their favorite Sesame Street characters. This interactive toy features both Elmo and Cookie Monster. Push the vacuum with Elmo facing forward to hear character phrases from Elmo. Then turn it around to make Cookie Monster face forward and hear his phrases. They giggle, too! Oscar the Grouch gets in on the fun as he spins around in the center cylinder while you push the vacuum. Requires 3 "AA" batteries (not included). Measures 20" tall.

(Close to useless)

(Extreme Bug Vac)

(Cleaning the yard)

(Tons of fun!)

(Not just for kids - also an effective bug remover)
I bought this to catch bugs in my house. The power of the vacuum, even at the highest level, was barely enough to catch a small moth. A half-inch spider just crawled away from it, probably laughing a tiny little spider laugh.

If you're looking for a way to get rid of bugs, this isn't it.

This item works well. I use to to catch flys to feed to my mantis's.
The problem of flys escaping has been solved. I culture them in containers and used to have escapee's, even when I used the freezer method some would "wake up" more quickly and get out. Now I just suck them into this, take off the container that holds them and open it over the hole to my mantis containers and blow the flys out.

I imagie it would work to catch ones in your house, though it is not a shop vac strengh suction, so you have to be pretty close to them to catch them.

I bought this product along with the bug scope for my niece's 7th birthday. She loved going around the yard and "cleaning" it up of all the bugs then putting them in the scope. The vac also has a small maginification but the bug scope was just a nice addition. We all had fun with the products
This is not some feeble imitation of a real tool. I have no doubt it will collect bugs, bec my 9yo daughter used it to vacuum up loose bits of paper from Christmas wrappings. It is perfect with the Bug Habitat. It will wait until Spring when the bugs emerge, but she wanted to run outside and try to find bugs right away. This was a big hit among her other Christmas gifts. A family favorite.
I didn't buy this for a kid, but for me to safely capture spiders that turn up around the house and release them outside. I'd been having a bit of a spider problem, came across this vacuum in the store and figured it was worth a shot. Works perfectly! No more splatters of bug guts on the wall or lamely trying to catch the things in a cup. Just suck them up, bring them back outside and send them on their way.
Capture and study bugs without harming them. The Turbo Bug Vacuum has new boost button that gives you extreme power for capturing any bug. The 9V vortex provides five seconds of pure turbo power. The turbo power lights red when ready to boost. The capture core with its 5x magnification lets you view bugs up close. Requires six "AAA" batteries, included. Measures 2.5"L x 13"W x 7.5"H.

(A great machine!)

(Junk, garbage, crap... how else could I describe it?)

(Good product)

(Solid performance -- attachments are a little limited)

(Shop Vac Customer Service is Outstandiing)
I bought this vacuum three years; and it's still going strong. It is very quiet and powerful. And it has never failed to do the job.
Everything about this vacuum makes me think it's junk. When will these manufacturers learn that consumers are craving a better-made shop vacuum? It is at the point now that I must be careful when I choose to vacuum because this thing just puts me in such a foul mood. It is just such a piece of garbage that I want to drive over it with my truck and then burn what's left.

Like almost every other shop vacuum manufacturer, the friction fit attachments, wand, and hose require Atlas-like strength to stay together. If you dont force them together, they simply come apart at the worst possible moment. Oh, I could count a million times this has happened to me. Recently, my wife was kind enough to clean my shop while I was away. Her first comment was "That shop vac is a real piece of crap. Now I know why it makes you so grumpy!"

Let's not forget the wheels either. Even the wheels are junk. Will these manufacturers ever learn to make a shop vac that can roll over its own power cord? When the wheels hit the cord, the whole unit comes to an abrupt halt; often pulling the hose apart from the wand (see above). Then you have to go back to the vacuum, spin it off the cord, and reassemble any parts that have come off.

The most used but least effective tool on the unit is the floor sweeper. Why oh why do they put the bristle part in front of the vacuum area on this fitting? It just makes the attachment spread the dirt. Honestly now, does this company ever try to use their own product? I doubt it.

The hose on these units are such a joke. Its like pulling a Slinky around the shop. The hoses are cheap and flimsy. Give the hose a slight tug and the shop vac does nothing. Give it a firm tug and it comes racing at you like greased lightning. Look out!

Then there's the filter issue. It clogs too easily. The only time you have real suction is when the filter is first cleaned. Within 5 minutes of use, more than half of the suction power is gone.

And lastly, there is a serious noise issue. A shop vac will make you deaf. The high pitch whine (even with the overpriced "muffler") drives an annoying sound through rooms, up stairs, and into your neighbor's house.

There are no good options for shop vacs. The Ridgid, Craftsman, and Shop Vac units are all the same. Each is junk. Save your money and buy a good quality broom and dust pan. Sweeping is fast, simple, and far less frustrating.

Use this often in the shop and our 1870 B and B. Love it.
As advertised. Will go back to this company.

We got this for our basement and also because my husband does a lot of home building projects and this vacuum has worked very well over the years. For the most part -- it has really stood up under the abuse (though the switch quit working shortly after we got it so the only way to turn it on and off is by plugging it in or unplugging it -- or using a power strip with a switch).

This thing has a LOT of power and will suck up virtually everything in its path -- so be sure you don't aim it at anything you DON'T want to have vacuumed up -- like small pets, clothing, etc.

I gave it 4 stars because of the switch malfunction and I would really like to see more attachments for smaller areas -- but that probably isn't totally fair since it really is intended for large spaces and heavy duty jobs. However, since it is down in the basement and garage area -- it would be great if there were attachments that would be a bit more "car friendly" so that you could get into the nooks and crannies of car interiors better.

All in all, I would definitely buy this again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone that was thinking about it. We wind up using it far more than I ever thought we would.

I have had a few Shop Vacs in my little workshp over the last 40 years. I have been adding them, not replacing them. They have proved to be extremely reliable... the oldest one still doing dust collection duty for my table saw. I just had a problem with my "newest" one, a 10 gal unit. I emailed Shop Vac and explained the problem. In about 1 hour they sent me a response and said they will ship a replacement part. They stand behind their products!

(Handy Cordless Shop Vac)

(I'd love it even more if there was some place to carry a 2nd battery.)

(Awesome vacuum)

(Holds only 10min worth of a charge)

(Great Vacuum)
This shop Vac is great except the battery does not last long while doing the vacuuming.

This shop vac should come with a Battery included in price and then the customer can purchase the Charger.

Once you have the charger and battery...you can purchase other Milwaukee cordless tools as battery is interchangeable.
Tom

I think it's fantastic. I like the portability, but wish there was a place to carry a second battery, given how far I have to walk/climb to some of the places where I use it. Otherwise it is a vac to fall in love with. I'm a little worried about the longevity of the connection between the hose and the body of the vac, as the connection mode seems vulnerable to easy breakage. Time will tell, I guess.
Great suction power! Runs on NiCad and Lithuim Ion 18 volt batteries.Very handy. I use often for jobs where running a extension cord would be inconvenient. An example is vacuuming loose concrete and dirt before calking a sidewalk crack. Good runtime!!!!
Overall I am happy with this 18v cordless wet/dry vac. I keep it in the trunk and us it for car spills or when the dog gets car sick. Easy enough to hose off the container for cleaning. Vac suction is pretty decent for a cordless, way more powerful than a dustbuster but still not shopvac strength.
The only problem is that it only keeps a 10min 48sec charge. I tested using 2 charged batteries for comparison and the vac stopped around the same time. So if you require longer than 10 minutes, then I would recommend buying a 24v battery instead of the 18 v battery. Yes, even though it states here on amazon as a 18v cordless, this vac also takes 24v batteries.

Great suction, decent run time with ni-cads, even better with lithium-ion with no loss in suction. Must have for dirty projects small to medium in area. Convenience of no power cord must be experienced.
The Milwaukee cordless wet/dry vacuum works with all Milwaukee 18V slide-on batteries to offer higher air power and suction to provide quick and easy removal of dust, debris and water, along with long continuous run time. Gallons: 2, CFM: 45

(Great power, but chintzy)

(Tiny, but great suction! Easy to use! Perfect for quick jobs!)

(Its OK)

(Great for the Price)

(Boooooooooo!)
I paid $20 for this at my local Target. It has amazing suction for a tiny machine, and the basic tools are more than enough for me. I bought it to vacuum out my car and for the ocassional spills on my rugs.

The reasons why this is not 5 stars:

1) cheap plastic.

2) short cord.

3) A little tricky to empty when used for dry pick-ups.

While I like it and the price was right, Sears had a more powerful on sale a week or so later. It looked better made too.

If you can get this for $20, buy it. If you have to do heavy wet/dry vacuuming, buy a bigger and more powerful model.

WET DRY VAC. Small, cheap, great suction - use with or without paper filters. OK, it's a cheapy, so don't expect miracles. Loud, but not obscenely so. Hard to clean out (without the paper filter bags) but can be done (vacuum out with another vac if needed.) Of course, without the bags the filter gets trashed real quick and has to be replaced. Bags are expensive, at about $3.50 each, with shipping, but CONVENIENCE is what a this product is about. On the plus side, is very light and easy to handle. PERFECT for what it's made for, quick light jobs, like a cardiac cleaning with company on the way, or pet hair, debris, etc, in corners, under cabinets, and along edges of flooring, or a spill. (YES, you'll want to glue the hose connection to the tank.) Only thing we'd like to see included is a long wand for reaching corners, cobwebs, etc, but we use one we have from another vacuum.
This Shop Vac is OK. The bigger, more expensive models are more powerful, but thats to be expected. Unfortunately, with Shop Vacs, you inevidibly, compromise power and performance when you go for the smaller models.

What I like about this vacuum:

1. Its lightweight-easy to carry around, especially when cleaning the car. I occasionally use it indoors as well.

2. I've used it a few times. If you clean the filter (or whatever it is that they tell you to empty and clean after each use) as recommended then the vacuum maintains its "full strength" power (as time goes by, it does lose strength when you're using it, but thats due to its small "holding" capacity-it can't stomach 16 lbs. of debris).

3. Price. Hey I paid ~$30, so I can't expect the performance of an industrial strength commercial cleaner or even my household canister that cost a few hundred bucks. But for the price, its a nice little tool for little jobs.

What I don't like about it:

1. It seems to blow a lot of dust around sometimes. But this may have more to do with how you hold it then the product itself. Because when I was cleaning my car, I'd notice sometimes an area that I had just cleaned would be dirty a few minutes later. And I think this was in part due to the how the vacuum was positioned because there is a part of it that vents out air which I think is responsible for blowing around debris and dirtying areas that had just been cleaned. So be mindful of how the vacuum is sitting or how you're holding it and you will be OK.

2. Not a lot of power. But like I said-for $30, I didn't buy this with unrealistic expectations. In fact, I was more impressed with what I got for the price, then anything.

3. Not place to store attachments-but hey, its a small vacuum made to be portable so I understand that there isn't room for that.

UPDATE: I have since replaced this Hangup Mini with the shopvac Hangup wet/dry vacuum, which although lacks the wall mount bucket holder (has a side wall holder instead), no hose holder, no parts holder, it does have a much better way of opening the unit AND can be used as a blower. Other than that, they are pretty much both the same even though the HangUp states it has a slightly higher amperage, which I could not really tell the difference in suction.

I have to say that I was quite surprised by the power of this mini Wet/dry shopvac.

I was expecting dustbuster strength, but nothing as powerful as this. I should have known it would have been shop vac strength but certainly did not expect that from such a small unit. Granted the diameter of the hose is very smaller in comparison to a typical shopvac, but still wide enough to pickup dirt, wood chips and small nails&screws.

It sure is noisy though. I would have to wear ear plugs if I was going to use it for prolonged periods of time.

I have to agree with other users that the power cord is just too small. Perhaps Shop Vac decided that if your going to need an extension cord, might as well make the cord small for easy storage. Regardless, you'll have to tag on a few bucks for an extension cord, unless you already have one.

I love the weight of this Shop Vac and both the handle on top and the insert handle on the top base, makes it very easy to hold and vacuum at the same time. You can even decide not to install the top handle is you so desire.

The cubic beveled shape came in very handy for creating a backpack vacuum. I retrofitted an old backpack so that I could vacuum my workshop&even house with this shop vac on my back. It's so light and easy to maneuver this way compared to buying a similar backpack vacuum that costs well over $1000. Try it, you'll see how much easier it is to vacuum and it fits within most daypacks (Just make sure that their is an exhaust).
Last, I read on one of the posts that some people are using these for their RV's or trucks with a transformer. Although it uses less power than a typical shop Vac, it looks like your still going to need a 1500 watt inverter, rather than a 750-1200 watt power inverter. Just an FYI.

The reason I gave this review 4 stars is because I took off one star for the Noise (damn it's loud) and another for the short powercord, short hose, and the lack of a typical Shop Vac hose exhaust outlet. I have no clue why they did not add a hose exhaust outlet, as it certainly would have been a benefit to use it as a blower.

Space is an issue for me. So is cleanliness. Why does this vac stink? Because the motor is less than an inch from the walls of the dirt canister. If you've used a shop vac&know how dirt packs to the filter, you may as well empty it on your floor&vac it all back up again. Putting the entire vac in the trash receptacle, then removing the top is the cleanest you can get with this. The hose doesn't unscrew; it slides between the top&bottom.

The side tabs that lock are very tight; so tight that one snapped off, so I couldn't send it back. If you want a REALLY good small shop vac, go with the All Around. It may *seem* expensive, but when you get this vac, you'll kick yourself. A dustbuster would be better/easier.

Sorry ShopVac- you failed with this pain in the butt.

(Not Free SF Reader)

(A gem)

(If you could change your personality...)

(great)

(Why didn't Swanwick sue Paramount?)
Swanwick has written an intriguing biological themed cyberpunk tract.
The Earth AI that has evolved is very creepy, far more so than the one
in the Forever War. As, of course, is personality role-programming.
However, The Compris does provide an interesting conversation at the
end with the protagonist's team, who are its declared enemies. You also
don't want vacuum flowers in your garden, that is for sure.

This book is perfect. It has plot, it has characters, it has science that makes sense, it has politics that makes sense, and it has one perfect moment at the end that I would describe if I could, but describing it would spoil it.

Read this book and anything else Michael Swanwick ever wrote. He is that good.
The central technological advancement of this book is the plug-in personality. You go into a clinic and get yourself "wetwired" to perform any given task (janitor, policeman, doctor), or simply augment the personality you have (give yourself more confidence, sex appeal, or even make yourself shy and introverted if that's in style). The protagonist, Rebel Elizabeth Mudlark, is a recorded personality (a real one) who has taken over the body she's being tested in. She's being hunted by the corporation that "owns" her, and trying to discover why she was created.

This shell of a plot leads us from Eros Kluster, a loose affiliation of space habitats near the asteroid belt, to Mars, a futuristic communist state where citizens are programmed to work on the latest 200-year plan, to Earth, a collective entity consisting of every human being on the planet, known as the Comprise.

The book is generally fun, there's enough action, sex, and funky technology to sustain anyone's interest, and it's not that long. the climactic commando attack on the Comprise is exciting and would make an incredible sequence in a movie or graphic novel.

The problem is that Swanwick is generally more interested in showing us the worlds he's created, and doesn't spend enough time dealing with the story and characters. The trick to that is, he throws out a dozen neologisms every few pages (some of which are inconsequential), and it takes a while for the meaning of everything to sink in. The fact that most of the book takes place in the low-gravity of space stations is barely mentioned. Furthermore, the places the characters visit aren't well-described, at least not in a three-dimensional, physical sort of way, which I found very frustrating. In general, most science-fiction operates like this, so most readers shouldn't mind.

The characters themselves never get quite enough attention. Rebel wants to be the hero, but spends most of her time watching everything else going on, and listening to people speak. The only other character who's present throughout is Wyeth, a man whose personality has been split up into four distinct personas. He's interesting, as are all the minor characters they meet along the way, but he never quite connects. When these two end up in love, I felt like I'd missed a third of the book.

"Vacuum Flowers" has enough hardware to fill out a novel twice as long, so as it is it's a very fast, very crowded little book.

This is one of the best sf books I have read in a long time. Buy it, you won't regret it.
I just recently re-read Vacuum Flowers for the first time in probably 15 years; I read it in College when it first came out and then recently came across another copy. Has anyone else noticed the *astonishing* similarities between the Comprise as described in Vacuum Flowers and"the Borg"in the Star Trek series? It seems like every Borg plot device was taken from this novel!

The basic idea of cyborgs with implanted tranceivers that link them together as a group mind where any individual can speak for the whole collective.

The description of the way in which partial thoughts proceed through the group mind in fragments of speech.

The rapiciousness with which the Comprise absorbs humans into its collective.

"Billy"being removed from the Comprise and turned into a"real boy"-- sounds suspiciously like what ST:TNG did later with"Hugh".

Even the description of how the comprise members have their skin dyed -- something that goes away when they are removed from the collective...
In a world of plug-in personalities and colonized asteroids, daring fugitive Rebel Elizabeth Mudlark seeks refuge on Earth orbiting settlements, where evil, self-interest, and greed flourish in the vacuum of space. Reissue.

(The Last Word in Flow Leak Detection!)

(everyone in semiconductor industrie must read this book)

(congratulations)

(Execellent, practical and comprehensive reference book.)

(If you work with vacuum systems, DON'T LOAN THIS ONE!)
A colleague who likes to call himself "Captain Suction" and I were debating the exigencies of a client's flow leak detection problem, and needless to say, things got quite hot. At least they did until I slammed O'Hanlon's volume on his cubicle and yelled, "Look it up, sucker!" I didn't hear a peep from him for weeks.
Since I work in a very big semi' fab as field service engineer I looking for a good description of any tool part's on several manufacturing machines. But i work in Germany and it isn't so easy to find much more and better information as for an student without experience. It is my second book about vakuum technologie, all new kinds of engineering and also standard technologie is well prepaired in this issue. Some description of Pump's could be better or more funktionplan's , but all in one book is maybe too much. I was very surprised of this universal Handbook for engineer's and technician, best offer for all who need information about PVD, CVD, Implant vakuum etc. A lot of basic's in introduction part, well to understand, intresting gas properties, cluster technologie and last but not least - a big appendix with all what you need , very fine. Thank's for this good book.

Thankful we found more complete data on vacuum system.
I borrowed this book from a colleague here at Applied Materials. After looking at it for a few minutes, I offered to buy it from him. Of course, he refused. So here I am at Amazon (physically at work) to purchase the book. It is extremely practical and I intend to keep it here at work as a reference for problems I encounter. By the way, my web address is http://www.netcom.com/~kvick/main.html. Please feel free to visit or email me
John f. O'Hanlon is so thorough, and has so much to offer. Whether the reader is an engineer or an operator of a vacuum system there is plenty here for each. This is a reference book, so never lend it to anyone!
In the decade and a half since the publication of the Second Edition ofA Users Guide to Vacuum Technologythere have been many important advances in the field, including spinning rotor gauges, dry mechanical pumps, magnetically levitated turbo pumps, and ultraclean system designs. These, along with improved cleaning and assembly techniques have made contamination-free manufacturing a reality. Designed to bridge the gap in both knowledge and training between designers and end users of vacuum equipment, the Third Edition offers a practical perspective on todays vacuum technology. With a focus on the operation, understanding, and selection of equipment for industrial processes used in semiconductor, optics, packaging, and related coating technologies,A Users Guide to Vacuum Technology, Third Edition provides a detailed treatment of this important field. While emphasizing the fundamentals and touching on significant topics not adequately covered elsewhere, the text avoids topics not relevant to the typical user.

(Well written basics)

(Best in the world at what it does, the only book that does what it does)

(Best book on tubes)
Inside the Vacuum Tube was written in the late 1940s. It apparently came out of the author's experience in teaching electronics to military personnel during World War 2. The author begins with fundamental concepts of electronics. He then adds discussion of what a vacuum tube is, and some fundamental concepts concerning them. He goes on to discuss Diodes, Triodes, Tetrodes, and Pentodes. He also discusses the Cathode circuit, Power Amplifiers, and miscellaneous vacuum tubes (including the Cathode Ray Tube of television and computer monitor fame).

This is a generally well written book. The author assumes very little about the education of his readers beyond the ability to do high school level algebra. A few of the examples he uses would be more familiar to a farmer than a city dweller though.

The main drawback of the book is the somewhat cyclical discussion of various fundamental concepts. The author brings up the same points a number of different times in the text with only gradually decreasing volume - he'll discuss a concept in one chapter, and then in the next chapter he'll spend a bit less space on the same topic, etc.

Because few textbooks written in the last few decades spend much effort discussing vacuum tubes, this is a good resource for those who want to learn about them. It covers the basic concepts very thoroughly, while giving a good number of clear jumping off points for further research if desired.

"Inside the Vacuum Tube," written in 1945, is the best book in the world at what it does, because to my knowledge it is the only book that does what it does, which is to educate a reader without benefit of basic knowledge of electricity on the fundamentals of vacuum tubes. If you want an original copy of this book, a search of the Internet reveals that it will cost you more than $200; it is fortunate then that it has been reprinted and is available in paperback for $30. It is a most useful starting point for learning about tubes, their construction and their operation, even if you are otherwise experienced in electronics (involving transistors). There is a certain "culture" that surrounds working with tubes, and I don't know how one picks up this knowledge today; certainly it is not taught in schools. By putting you back in time when tubes were in their hey-day, this book fills in some things that no one seems to mention anymore. For example, it is common to hear people who work with tube circuits to refer to the "B+" - the what? In this book you learn that the voltage supplied to the tube heaters is (or was) called the A voltage, the voltage to the plate of the tube was referred to as the B voltage, and the voltage to the grids was called the C voltage. Nice. Now, instead of parroting what everyone else says, you will know where this terminology came from. Likewise with transconductance, the "gm." What's the "m" in gm? Transconductance used to also be called the mutual conductance, which is what I assume the m in gm signifies.

The book takes a reader with no knowledge of basic electricity and qualitatively delves into the physics of what is happening inside a vacuum tube. The discussion of the space charge layer surrounding the cathode is well done, and the author uses it repeatedly in explaining the operation of tubes. The book really is an excellent place to get started. There is a great discussion of I-V characteristics, load lines and dynamic transfer characteristics, concepts that are also used in transistor electronics, but you see how these concepts were developed first with tubes. It is very nice how the author proceeds from a discussion of the diode, to the triode, and then finally to the tetrode and pentode. Understanding the triode is the core material of the book.

So why only 4 stars then? The strength of the book is also its weakness. In attempting to reach a reader without preparation in technical matters, the author takes the time to explain topics that anyone with a high-school education would know; plotting a function, for example. The book begins with cartoon depictions of electrons jumping off the cathode, and these are very nice and creative, up to a point. Einstein said you should make things as simple as possible, but no simpler. After several chapters of cartoons, the author states, (I'm paraphrasing) "OK, from now on we're going to take off the training wheels," but invariably he then says, "But first ..." and he returns to baby talk. While the level of the material in succeeding chapters does get more detailed, the author can't seem to get beyond his role as educator for the hopelessly lost, and so in each chapter it seems he starts over from the beginning in certain respects. He is quite repetitive and wordy; one reason may be because he is loath to use symbols and mathematics. If you can't resort to symbols to represent concepts, you are doomed to repeating the same long-winded explanations. There are a few pitfalls the reader should be aware of. The author's depiction of electric field lines is backwards from modern usage; the author draws field lines in showing what an electron would do, whereas today electric field lines are defined in terms of positive charges. Beware the author's use of negative numbers, as in voltages being "more negative" than others, when in actuality he means the opposite. When the author speaks about negative voltages, for example on the grid of the tube, he often means the absolute magnitude of the voltage.

All in all, however, this is an excellent book and is probably unique. I wish I knew of a nice "second" book on vacuum tubes to read. The present book, Inside the Vacuum Tube, will have prepared you admirably for that next book, whatever it is.

Hands down the best book I've read on tubes. Gives simple explanations on how electrons flow inside the tube. If ever lost I would have to kill for another.

I ordered my .5 Qt. Stanley from Amazon June 2009 and have no heat retention problems. The hot liquid was still hot the morning after in a test run to make sure I got a good bottle. It is apparent that Stanley read these reviews, took them to heart and made manufacturing corrections which says a lot to me about their expectation and reputation. I am very happy with my purchase. Thank you Stanley.
I bought two of these, one in red and one in black. After reading a few of the reviews, I discovered that the quality control looked to be faulty - no thermos should leak perceptible heat. Once the red and the black thermos arrived, I put boiling water in both. These are both brand new. The red stayed cool. The black radiated intense amounts of heat. One has a vacuum, as promised - the other is nothing but a high-priced steel jar.

This is made in China - and obviously, Stanley has decided that Americans can't tell the difference between a working thermos and a flawed POS. Out of the two I bought, one is a flawed POS. The other is a thermos. Too bad they lost control or stopped caring about quality.

I've heard many stories about the Stanley thermos keeping coffee piping hot all day long in the snow. My piping hot coffee goes luke-warm in the matter of an hour, and that's with pre-heating the thermos with boiling water, too! I have been extremely disappointed with this product. Maybe I'll buy another one some day and hope for better luck. The outside of the thermos gets hot, showing that there is a loss of heat from my coffee. It keeps cold liquids cold for a several hours, but not too long.
This is a great item. I use it for coffee all day long. If I make sure and close it all the way throughout the day then I can have a last cup of WARM coffee when I leave work at 6 o'clock. I don't think their is a better product on the market.
Coffee luke-warm after 30 minutes. A clue: If you can feel heat on the outside of your thermos, heat is escaping.

I won't buy another stainless steel thermos. Back to glass thermos for me. May be breakable, but at least I know my coffee will stay hot. Cheaper, too.

The Stanley Classic Half Quart Bottle is the ultimate in durability. Double wall stainless steel unbreakable vacuum insulation will keep coffee hot all day long, day after day. The Classic Half Quart Bottle has a double wall stainless steel cup, easy pour stopper, heavy duty handle, rust-proof finish and will fit easily into your bag or backpack. Every Stanley bottle is backed by a lifetime guarantee. In 1913, William Stanley invented the all-steel vacuum bottle. Since then, the Stanley bottle hasn't missed a day of work, a football game, or a trip to the great outdoors. The distinctive Stanley bottle is an American Icon that still works as hard today as it did nearly 100 years ago. Stanley... Built for Life.

(Stainless Steel Bottle for Hot and Cold)
I bought this bottle because I needed a bottle that stays cold in hot weather. Most other bottles are single wall and get hot easily. This Eco Vessel is vacuum sealed and keeps my drinks cold all day. It also keeps drinks hot. The bottles are stylish and have performed great so far.
Our Eco Vessel bottle is vacuum sealed with 2 layers of stainless steel. It is built to hold both hot and cold beverages. Feel good knowing that our 100% recyclable bottles are BPA-free, and are designed for safety, ease of use, and convenience. Accept no substitutes for an original Eco Vessel stainless steel bottle. By purchasing an Eco Vessel bottle, you are helping to save the planet from useless waste that accumulates from the billions of water bottles that clog our landfills every year.
