(Filters work) 『All three dogs in my house prefer the water filtered by these filters over the non-filtered water. I also know it's working by the amount of "crap" stuck in the filters when I change them. It's a little expensive for my controlled budget, but worth the satisfaction of the dogs.』

(Comparasion of Filters) 『Has anyone used the new generation of multi-chamber replacement filters for the Drinkwell Fountain and if so, how do they compare to the original two-chamber filters? There is quite a price difference between the two so if anyone has first hand knowledge, please share any pros and cons you may have. My Yellow Lab loves his Drinkwell Fountain. When I need to clean the unit, I put out a fresh bowl of water for him but he is so spoiled to his Drinkwell Fountain, he usually just waits until it is on line again. The only downside to the unit is that it is a bit difficult to clean. We have a lot of calcium in our water supply so it is inevitable that calk builds up rather quickly. However, a mild solution of warm vinegar water circulating for an hour or so does the trick. I just wish the manufacturer of the Drinkwell Fountain would offer a decent set of cleaning brushes. The quality of the Drinkwell brushes is sorely lacking. The brushes have exposed metal tips, albeit they are thinly coated with what appears to be some type of plastic or rubber coating, the number of bristles in each brush is extremely sparse plus they have cheaply made plastic handles that have a tendenacy to easily split apart at the seam. In my humble opinion, the Drinkwell brushes are extremely inferior and are not worth the pricey selling price since they do little to nothing to adequately clean the unit. Suggest you don't waste your money on these flimsy brushes. I use a good baby bottle brush and/or acquarium brushes. These types of brushes do a much better job, are made to a much higher standard of quality and the overall price is comparable.』

I owned this for 150 days and then it quit. We took it apart, basically this design is living on borrowed time as the unit will eventually fail.
Sunbeam placed the actual electronic switch below the aluminum bowl part and on top of the plastic housing. The grey button on the top is nothing more than a lever to another piece that actually depresses the electronic switch below the aluminum bowl. The real electronic switch is less than an inch from where the water flows from the aluminum bowl and out the dispenser. That switch, also sits right next to the heating element. Now you don't need to be an engineer to know that electronics don't care for heat and they don't care for water. In our case the heat killed the electronic "on" switch. I am not sure where the previous model's (3211) actual "on" switch was, but it had to be in a smarter location that this for it to last TEN years.
So the old design, built in the US apparently lasted 10 years and the new design, made in China lasted 150 days. I should have read the 1-star reviews as I would have found that just about every owner of the previous model have had nothing but bad experience with this model. Don't discount the opinions of those that owned the previous model. I don't think I will ever buy another Sunbeam product again, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
P.S. The only reason we replaced our ten year old 3211 model was because the rubber or plastic seal in the dispenser part had worn out and the unit would leak while dispensing.』
(Good heat, but too small) 『This is a good quality product, it truly is. The problem I have with it lies in the fact that I bought it online rather than seeing it in a store. I use tall travel coffee cups which are pretty standard these days, so I had erroneously assumed that this model would accommodate them. That was my fault. While the Sunbeam does heat water quickly and to a good temperature, it is a big inconvenience to have to use a small coffee mug to transfer the water to my travel mug. It is also too small for me to slide my teapot under, meaning I have the same problem of transferring the hot water from cup to pot. If you only use regular size coffee mugs this will be fine. If you're more fond of over-sized mugs or travel mugs - I'd advise investing in a different model.』

(Useful and money saving) 『This is a great product. I had one years ago and then shifted to heating water for tea in the microwave. My last microwave had a short life and when I replaced it, I bought another "Hot Shot" for heating water to take some of the use away from the microwave. The hot shot is quicker, the water is the perfect temperature for tea, and it saves electricity. I'd give it 5 stars if the water drained faster after it was heated. This is a great graduation gift.』

I'm not sure the blue outer surface does anything significant. Even if the blue webbing is completely "anti-microbial," how does that keep microbes from flourishing in the other 99.99% of the wick?
The dewpoint [outside] was in the upper 30s, my apartment is about 700 sq. feet, and my humidifier was coming on almost constantly. It should have been coasting along (with the fan on Low) instead of stressing. I took out the old filter, put in one of these, and with the same dewpoint, the humidifier comes on for much less time, saving electricity and my patience.
Now, I'm ready for 0 Degree dewpoints -- Bring it on.
I recommend using a mineral-dissolving Water Treatment so your wick lasts for 6 months instead of 4 weeks. I have soft water, but use a little squirt of Treatment every time I add a couple of gallons of water, regardless. I think it helps extend the wicks' life.
Lose one star: * for not being 100% antimicrobial but including marketing jargon that implies that it is * for not lasting forever, and * for costing too much.』
(A great replacement filter) 『These replacement filters are great. They have a handle built in to keep your hands dry when removing from humidifier. The Air Washing layer is very good at catching dirt and pet hair that would get into the evaporation wick and shorten the life of the filter. This is well put together so that it stays upright even when it is wet instead of collapsing like other filters do.』
(Argh - didn't fit my Honeywell humidifier.) 『My stupid Honeywell humidifier does not have a marking on it saying what model it is. So when I ordered this filter, I assumed that their filters were universal.

(Monthly Cost Not Anticipated) 『I have mixed feeling about this product. The filter works well but does not last long. Mildew builds up quickly. I have to remove it everyday and take it outside so that it can air-out to perserve a longer life span. I us it everry night in the Honeywell 1012. This system has reduce the number of sinus headaches I get--that's the positive benefit. The negative point is that each filter cost over $9 dollars and only last approximately a month if you leave it in continuously--Approximately $120 a year. I called Honeywell to find out if there was a replacement filter that did not require changing. Unfortunately, No.』

As far as the Filter itself, the one that originally came with my Humidifier (which is identical), lasted a good year. I did take it out from time to time, and wash it in vinegar water; and I did NOT replace it like they suggested (I didn't need to!).
I can tell you when you NEED to replace the filter. It will be humming right along, then one day, you think, "My, I haven't filled the reservoirs in quite some time..." Vera Lynn remains, sadly, a somewhat forgotten singer despite the fact that she always gave blood to make her ballads shine. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent; and I really love the artwork!
"Yours" starts the CD with Vera Lynn performing at her very best; and that brass really enhances the music that goes with her vocals. I love it! There's also a fine medley of "Who's Taking You Home Tonight," "Wishing" and "Wish Me Luck;" Vera delivers this like the masterful chanteuse she always was and always will remain! "Who's Taking You Home Tonight" is especially poignant; I really love this tune. Listen also for a delightful medley of "The Last Time I Saw Paris;" "Arm In Arm" and "I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time." Vera handles these tunes with great poise and she sings with genuine feeling on all three parts of this medley; I'm very impressed. The music fits in perfectly with Vera's singing--and wisely the musicians stay in the background; they never attempt to steal the show away from Vera. Terrific!
"A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" stuns me with its beauty; Vera gives this a very sensitive interpretation and that piano arrangement is very elegant. "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" is easily a major highlight of this album. Of course, "White Cliffs Of Dover" was a big hit especially when Vera Lynn sang it; Vera loved to do this song and she never misses a note here! She really opens up to showcase her vocal range on "White Cliffs Of Dover;" and that's grand. The music is sweet and Vera makes this number heavenly in her capable hands.
"I'll Be Seeing You" is a beautiful, charming and nostalgic ballad that I could never tire of; and Vera gives this her all--it shows when you hear her do this one up right! "I'll Be Seeing You" is a prime example of the type of sophisticated ballad that Vera Lynn was born to sing. "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" is equally memorable; and Vera delves deep into this to make it shine bright. In addition, "Besame Mucho (Kiss Me)" benefits from Vera's sublime delivery and the somewhat Latin touch to the music makes it all the more special. "You'll Never Know" is a classic if there ever was one; and Vera outdoes even herself on "It Had To Be You." "It Had To Be You" is a fine number that sparkles when Vera swings gently to give us a great rendition of this tune.
"As Time Goes By" is absolutely charming; Vera really ranks high in my book when she sings songs like this one! There's a fine medley of "When The Lights Go On Again;" "I'll Pray For You" and "We'll Meet Again." Vera never skips a beat.
Vera Lynn fans can rejoice that they can add this excellent album to their collections. It's also a wonderful album for anyone who appreciates good music from the World War Two era and/or classic pop vocals. 』

(Movie was EXCELLENT but 3D graphics were HORRIBLE!) 『Please don't misunderstand, the show itself was outstanding! Buy the 2D version you will love it! Very entertaining, makes you sing along and even want to dance. I would say it's Miley at her best but I've been to two of her concerts on the Wonder World tour and she's definitely giving this concert a run for its money. However, I was SO SO SO dissapointed at the 3D graphics. Nothing appeared to be 3D and trust me I spent an hour trying to convince myself that I was seeing something in 3D. It all appeared blurry even with the glasses on! The one I purchased was the regular DVD not Blu-Ray and I read a review on here that says the Blu-Ray one was excellent. I don't have a Blu-Ray player but I'm tempted to go buy one so that I can experience this concert in true 3D fashion. But again, it's completely worth purchasing the 2D version but you'll be dissapointed if you buy the 3D DVD.』

(Best of Both Cross-Promotional Marketing Schemes) 『Here we have a great example of highly polished, easily packaged, pre-teen manufactured musical product. "Hey kids, wanna be cool but keep Mommy and Daddy happy? Buy this!" - But there is more to this McMusic than just pedestrian synthetic pop.
The marketers of this product have managed to sell sex to pre-teens, along with the shoes, toys, clothes and CDs. Using a light touch, skimming the surface of seduction, the music and personas of these "pop stars" have been carefully crafted to stir pre-teens into a frenzy. The innuendos in the lyrics combined with the costumes and the stage acts activate deeply buried pre-teen emotions that translate into a fervor of consumerism. "Buy-buy-buy", their little minds scream this message, while their parents think "Its so wholesome and sweet" - nothing could be further from the truth.
Real music stirs the soul and elevates the mind into a higher state. The dervative, artificial sounds and platic visuals of Hannah Montana and the Jonas Bros. do the opposite; turning the pre-teens into purchasing units in a mass marketing grid. This "music" is not just bad, its a corrosive substance that will burn away the souls of your kids and turn them into mindless sheep.
Resist purchasing this emotionless dreck.』

I had just recently taken her to see the movie, so when I saw this concert very reasonably priced decided to buy it and have it sent to her home. I haven't seen the video myself, but my grand daughter seems to love it. I'm very happy with my purchase.』 『TheHannah Montana&Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worldslive concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert video is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn't get tickets to attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)'s performance of "Rock Star," and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it's back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts' special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots of shots of the enthusiastic, mostly female 'tween audiences. The 3D format gives the audience a nice sense of being there and includes some effective, if somewhat overused shots of the crowd waving, Hannah/Miley reaching out to the audience, and fun stunts like the drummer's twirling stick thrown high in the air and the guitar player's pick being tossed out into the audience. The sound is adequate, but fails to replicate the live concert experience (the plus side is that the audience's ears won't be ringing for hours after the performance). Hannah Montana's performance includes "Rock Star," "Life's What You Make It," "Just Like You," "Nobody's Perfect," and "We Got the Party." The Jonas Brothers perform "When You Look Me In the Eyes" and "Year 3000," and then Miley hits the stage with "Start All Over," "I Got Nerve," "I Miss You" (which Miley wrote in honor of her Granddad's passing), "Going Away," "GNO: Girl's Night Out," and "The Best of Both Worlds." This 3D concert presentation truly is the "best of both worlds," a 3D concert experience with easy availability and minimal expense. Better yet is the message that girls can do anything they want if they put their minds and hearts to it. (Nice Seasonal Music) 『The whole Winters's Solstice Series is really first rate. The different styles of music all complement each other and there are enough traditional holiday songs to make the discs nice for holiday gatherings. My wife and I both love Christmas music, but this series goes beyond the holiday season and we do listen to them until Spring. The Windham Hill Christmas series offers very nice arrangements of the more "traditional" , familiar songs that we also enjoy. I think the best testament is that even though this series goes back 25 + years, it still plays well now. The regular familiar arrangements are nice, but this series offers a pleasant alternative. And, they are priced to buy! Put them on shuffle play on a multi disc changer and you won't have to worry about music for any gathering of good friends, family, food and spirits (Christmas and otherwise...)which is what the season is all about...counting your blessings and enjoying life.』
(Quite LOVELY for ALL Seasons...) 『My first Winter Solstice cd (I started with number 2)&I'm quite impressed! It is completely Instrumental except for a very short beautiful addition of the sound of female voices more like an instrument near the end of one of the selections that adds to it's sweetness. (Normally I do not care for mixing vocals with primarily instrumentals, but this doesn't detract from it at all). I guess you could play this cd in the winter only, but that sure seems like a waste of the opportunity to be soothed year round. The music is reminiscent of the renaissance period&there are no recognizable Christmas tunes (for me anyway). This whole album is perfect for relaxing anytime&will be great at bedtime for me as I usually have trouble winding down to sleep. Overall, I highly Recommend it. There are some very reasonably priced "like new" ones offered by an assortment of sellers here on Amazon (I now have the first cd in this series on the way to me). Peace.』
(The very Best of them all-Still after all these years...) 『After all the years and all the Winter Solstice/Carols of Christmas?Windham Hill Christmas compilations, this is the one I always come back to. It has the most original material, and because of that, it is one of the few Winter Solstice albums you can honestly listen to in July or January or December. Brilliant improvisations by Philip Aaberg begin, and end this disc. One of Ackerman's awesome harp-guitar pieces, a piece by Barbara Higbee which is one of the only I've heard of her flute performances. And the most poignant moments of all - Fred Simon's Simple Psalm. Very moving piano work, complete with chime effects. Simply awesome. There is literally not a single boring or predictable track on this CD; it is a true masterpiece of astonishingly consistent talent all throughout. Yes the first "Winter Solstice" was very good, but this was actually far beyond perfect. THIS is the CD to start with!』 『TheWinter Solsticeseries from Windham Hill is an appealing souvenir from the label's early days, when guitarist Will Ackerman still served as its chief guiding light and fount of original thought. For years Ackerman shunned the overt commercial trappings of traditional Christmas recordings and instead offered odes to a broader season that, like his artists' music, is compatible with periods of sustained, hushed contemplation.Winter Solstice II, released in 1988, mixes original and traditional compositions (none that specifically brings Christmas to mind) and is adorned with classical overtones from front to back, conveying the high-minded earthiness associated with the label's then all-acoustic format. Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Story Of Humankind's Most Enduring Physical Creations) 『Another in the long line of animated adaptations of the coolest series of illustrated architectural books ever written, David Macaulay's collected works. This film shows how and why the great pyramids of the Nile Valley were constructed, and herein imagines the key figures of the era, while giving us a storyline (with murder, political intrigue, and the evil of human ambition) to add interest to an already fascinating subject. Although I personally prefer Cathedral, Castle, and Roman City a little more than Pyramid, I still like this video enough to have watched it about once a year going back into the '90's and wouldn't hesitate to urge anyone who thinks he might be interested to see this DVD for himself.』
(Egypt for the classroom) 『This is an excellent video for the classroom. I teach sixth grade and I can tell you that the students really like the animation sequences that tie directly to the artifacts shown. Although at times it seems dated by the clothing, the kids are focused. In conjunction with this video, I also utilize the book of the same name. The students learn about how to build a pyramid. I would highly recommend this video.』
(Good intro to pyramids and Egyptology) 『David McCauley, in the video based on his book Pyramid, presents a view of life in the Fourth Dynasty during the reign of Khufu and an account of the building of Khufu's pyramid complex at Giza. While this animated account is primarily a fictionalized history of the building of the pyramid, it holds fairly well to known facts regarding Khufu's reign, and allows the modern viewer a better understanding of life in Old Kingdom Egypt.
MacCauley begins by showing Khufu as a strong and vigorous ruler at the outset of his reign and in the early planning stages of his pyramid complex. This coincides with what is known about the rulers of the Third through Fifth Dynasties starting their tombs pyramid complexes early in their reigns. Khufu's massive pyramid took, according to Herodotus, twenty years to complete and Khufu himself probably reigned twenty-four years. Khufu's vizier was his brother Ankh-haf, who appears in the video as both vizier and as chief architect of the pyramid complex. This, while not evidential, follows the pattern of Zoser in the Third Dynasty whose vizier Imhoptep was also his chief architect.
While MacCauley's characterizations of the various members of the royal court are purely speculative, he uses them to explain some enigmas of the dynastic succession after Khufu. MacCauley would have the line of succession move from Khufu to his eldest son, Kawab, then to Hardedef, Baufre, Djedefre and last Khafre. From various king lists it is clear that Djedefre succeeded Khufu and was in turn succeeded by his brother Khafre, but birth order and direct maternal ancestry for all these sons of Khufu is not exactly known. The conflict between the brothers, as seen in the video, is based on speculation by some that Djedefre conspired against his older brother Kawab and in turn was overthrown by Khafre. This speculation is largely based on the marriage of Khufu's daughter Hetepheres II to both her brother Kawab and, after his death, to her half-brother Djedefre. The remarriage to his brother's wife is thought to have possibly been a legitimizing factor for Djedefre's reign
The video implied that Khufu had three queens and that the three small queens' pyramids on the eastern face of Khufu's pyramid would be for these royal ladies. Kawab is associated with Khufu's queen Meritates because of the proximity of his mastaba to her pyramid, the central of three queens' pyramids. Another of Khufu's queens, Henutsen, is associated with the southernmost of the queens' pyramids and was probably the mother of Khafre. The northernmost of these small pyramids, however, is not associated with one of Khufu's queens, but with his mother Hetepheres I. There is also evidence that Khufu had four queens, not three, though the names of the other two are unknown.
The video shows the progression in the building of Khufu's pyramid and its complex of temples over the course of many years. It is accurate in its description of the local stone quarried for the inner core and of the Turah limestone, probably ferried down-river, for the casing. Several theories exist on the use of ramps including one long sloping ramp, a series of four ramps spiraling from each corner and a combination of the long ramp with a ramp wrapped around three sides of the pyramid. The depiction in the video chose the four spiraling ramps as the method used by MacCauley's Khufu. It had been long thought that fear of tomb robbers was the motivation for moving the burial chamber from beneath the pyramid to higher up inside the structure itself. Anyone interested in alternate rationales for the locations of these chambers should read "The Complete Pyramid," by Mark Lehner.
The building of the mortuary and valley temples in the video expands on, but does not contradict the evidence of archeological excavations in the area around Giza. The covered and highly relief carved causeway was, no doubt, used to transport the Khufu to his final burial chamber and red granite sarcophagus after his embalming in the Valley temple. The equation of the living pharaoh with Horus and the deceased pharaoh with Osirus also parallels what is known of Egyptian belief, although the reference is primarily from later texts. Understandably missing from the video, which was produced in 1988, is any mention of the small satellite pyramid, perhaps for the king's Ka, uncovered in 1993 by archeologist Zahi Hawass. Also missing, however, is any mention of the boat pits, some of which were uncovered in 1954.
One somewhat inaccurate impression the viewer gains from the video is that all pyramids were built in the fashion depicted. There are many similar elements among the various pyramid complexes such as alignment to the cardinal points, clearing a foundation of bedrock and chiseling a grid on which to build, and use of lesser quality materials in the core and higher quality material for the casing. Still, from the evidence available, it can be seen that each any every complex is unique in some way and that pyramid building techniques were being invented and reinvented throughout the entire pyramid age. All in all, however, the inaccuracies and fictional extrapolations are minor compared to the value of the video as a whole for students of Egyptology.』

It is a little known but very good movie. Jimmy F. Skaggs (Who died of lung cancer in 2004) played an excellent ghostly villian in this film and made the movie all the more creepy with that evil smile of his. If you like mystery, ghosts, and the "old things" (you'll understand if you see this gem) then you'll absolutely love Ghost Town. Amazon only let me give 5 stars but I give it 10+.』

(Top-notch horror fantasy) 『Plot: A woman is driving down a road and car stalls out, then disapears after a sand storm comes. A sherrif and deputy come to check it out and the deputy is left behind. He follows a mysterious trail of horse shoe prints and finds his way into a ghost town and has to figure out where the girl is and how to save her and what-not.
Well, there' more to it then that, but that's the basic gist of the plot.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is good. I had a sort of feeling of dread from the beginning to end of the movie.
Acting: Very good. The film seems farely low-budget, but the acting is great!!! I didn't feel it was forced and I was carried away by the film.
Special FX and Make-up: Good, very good I was impressed.
Overall: I was very much impressed. With the exception of a couple cheesey moments, it was great horror/fantasy film. And its end wasn't exactly wrapped up in a neat little package. I wasn't expecting a great movie. Even if it wasn't great, it by far exceeded my expectations. I may have liked it a little long, its a little over 80mins.
But if you're looking for a decent horror film from the 80's or just a decent horror film, check out"Ghost Town". That is, if you can find it.! If you do, don't pass it up.! :D

(Decent update to previous model) 『I have both this model--the P11VNT3--as well as a couple of the previous version (the PF11VT3). An improvement in this new model is a better recessed on-off switch, so less of a chance of accidentally shutting off your cable-modem, or your DVR (tho I still think it could be even more recessed, or perhaps a spring-loaded slider switch that would be nearly impossible to shut off accidentally). The surge numbers are basically the same, tho you should also look at the actual "joules surge energy" rating, which is a lower number on both old and new units than the 3400 "eJoules" rating. The new unit has outlet shutters that you flick to the right to allow access to the outlet itself; the older version had shutters, but you had to push the plug into them pretty hard to get them to open. But the old unit had a longer (ten foot) cord, vs. the new unit's eight-footer.
I personally liked the look of the older unit better--the new unit seems a bit "old-fashioned" to my eyes--but this is just esthetics as it will probably be buried behind your TV cabinet or under your computer desk.
I think the co-ax filter is more marketing hype than of any real use--I have asked every single cable guy I ever met, as well as cable company tech support at several different companies, and they all say the co-ax filter isn't needed, that co-ax cables don't have surges. You can take that w/a grain of salt, but at one point (before I knew this) I had my cable hooked up to the co-ax filter on a high-end APC Back-UPS, and my cable signal kept dropping. The cable guy who came out told me that the filter was partly to blame for the signal degradation, and sure enough once it was unhooked my internet connection got better. So bottom line, if it makes you feel better to use the co-ax filter and doesn't cause any signal-degradation problems, then go for it. But if you are using the filter and are having cable problems, bypass the co-ax filter first before you call your cable guy.
Otherwise, a solidly-built unit that should last a long time (or until the next lightning strike). Still waiting to see how Schneider-Electric's recent acquisition of APC may or may not affect their quality and customer service.』

Update: I attached an image of this mounted. You can see it by clicking on customer images. If you look you will see it has two green LED's that are lit. The reason why I mention this is that the center one is not lit. After reading the manual that center one that is not lit indicated that the ground to the power center was not correct. As it turned after checking the outlet I found the polarity was reversed even though the outlet was grounded. Using a test light i confirmed the outlet had the hot and neutral wires reversed. After fixing this now all three lights are lit and I know its properly connected and protected. The other two LED's light green to tell you 1) the surge compression components are intact and providing full protection for you component 2) Indicates nominal AC power is present with no wiring faults detected.

("The Last Unicorn" - an enduring classic) 『4.5* I love Peter S. Beagle's works, especially "The Last Unicorn", "Tamsin", and "A Fine and Private Place". I watched this a long time ago, and remember loving the story, and today I was finally able to share it with my 5-year-old daughter. In the screen adaptation (the screenplay was also written by Peter S. Beagle), Mia Farrow plays the Last Unicorn who inadvertently learns that she is the last of her kind. Curious to discover the fate that has befallen the rest of the unicorns, the last unicorn learns from a Butterfly (Robert Klein) that an entity known as the Red Bull has herded the unicorns to the ends of the earth. Unfortunately, she finds herself captured by the witch Mommy Fortuna (Angela Lansbury)as part of the witch's Midnight Carnival. The unicorn is able to escape with the help of a novice magician Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and proceeds to the seaside castle of King Haggard (Christopher Lee) and meets the dreaded Red Bull, a fire elemental, but is once again saved by Schmendrick when she is transformed by his magic into a mortal woman, Lady Amalthea. Here is where Amalthea's/the last unicorn's quest gets really interesting and complicated, for it is at the castle of King Haggard that Amalthea meets and eventually falls in love with Haggard's adopted son, Prince Lir (Jeff Bridges).
The rest of this magical story explores what happens to Amalthea and Lir, will their mortal love survive the revelation of Amalthea's true identity, and will Amalthea fulfill her real quest to find the rest of the unicorns, and defeat the evil Red Bull? The story itself is magical, but what makes it compelling are the various themes explored, regarding friendship, self-discovery, faith, courage, love, and mortality. The anime (Japanese animation) is beautiful, and I will always consider this a classic. The songs are also melodious and meaningful. Highly recommended, though I would advise caution for the under-5s since there are some scary depictions in this movie.』
(The are no happy endings, because nothing ends.) 『Probably one of the most cherished non-Disney animated family movies from the last century, The Last Unicorn was based on the book of the same name by Peter S. Beagle. This was one of the few theatrical movies produced by Jules Bass and Aurthur Rankin Jr., better known as Rankin/Bass, the creators of nearly every Christmas holiday TV special, and other hit shows like Thundercats and Silverhawks.
Set sometime during the middle ages, a unicorn discovers from a passing butterfly that she is the only one left in the world. She leaves her forest in search of them, but gets captured by a witch for her travelling carnival. The unicorn is set free by the novice magician Schmendrick. Along the way, they are accompanied by the ex-bandit wench Molly Grue. The trio make their way to realm of King Haggard where the other unicorns are supposed to be. Once there, Haggard's menacing Red Bull appears to drive the unicorn into the sea. In order to protect her, Schmendrick taps into his true magic and turns the unicorn into a human female, which makes the Red Bull give up on her. Our heroes then enter into Haggard's castle under the guise of looking for work, with Schmendrick claiming that the now-human unicorn is his niece, Amalthea. Schmendrick keeps Haggard entertained, while Molly searches for a way into the Red Bull's lair which is supposed to lead to the missing unicorns. Haggard's son Lir has meanwhile has fallen in love with Amalthea, believing her to be just a beautiful girl, while at the same time Amalthea is growing fond of him and growing to forget her former life as a unicorn. Molly and Schmendrick eventually find the secret entrance, and with Alamathea and Lir into tow, they confront the Red Bull. Amalthea is changed back into a human, who because of her newfound human feelings is able to defeat the Red Bull and free all the unicorns that were trapped in the sea. Amalthea the unicorn then heads back for her forest, with Schmendrick and Molly apparently hooking up together in the end.
This film features some of the best animation by the Rankin/Bass group since their animated version of The Hobbit. The studio responsible for most of the actual animation though was Topcraft, whose work also includes the anime movie Nausicaa. The character designs are very unique and original too. The movie features an odd assortment of voice actors, like Mia Farrow doing a wonderful job as the unicorn, Christopher Lee as the mad Haggard, Alan Arkin as indifferent Schmendrick, and Rene Auberjonois steals his scene as a laughing skeleton. There have been two DVD releases of this movie, the original, and the 25th Anniversary Edition which has way better quality. If you haven't seen this yet, treat yourself to a truly epic animated fantasy.』

It seems silly to say that this movie shaped my life, but it definitely has!! The story is beautiful, and I absolutely recommend the book by Peter Beagle. What a well-written, poetic, heartbreakingly good story. The movie is animated beautifully and the actors did a superb job with the voices, especially Mia Farrow!
That said, the DVD version of this movie sucks. I had the VHS copy and lost it, and bought this DVD to replace it. Boy, was I disappointed. (My Halloween tradition) 『Ah, War of the Worlds. Still my favorite incarnation of this story. This was shown on television around Halloween just about every year in the 80's, and it was my yearly tradition as a kid to come home after an evening of trick-or-treating with my mother and sit down and watch this while eating my candy and popcorn. If I wasn't regularly watching it then, I was renting it on VHS from the local video store. Finally, after years of hoping for a Special Edition DVD, we have this. (The original DVD's only bonus was a trailer.)
As far as the movie itself, where do I begin? It's absolutely timeless. 90% of the special effects hold up even now. In fact, some of them look even better than the overtly-CG stuff seen today. Sometimes, models and practical animation effects look better. The story is filled with drama, and as I get older, I still find lots of little nuances in it that I never noticed on previous viewings. Of course, seeing it first as a child (dozens of times), I didn't understand the dialogue per se, so what grabbed me was the overwhelming fear of the unknown, the fate of loved ones, and the menacing imagery, colors and sounds of the Martians. The hissing of the machines creeped me out for years, and whenever I hear a neighbor's sprinkler on a summer night, I still get a chill. The manta-ray shape of the ships is very affecting on a visceral, psychological level, as well as the cobra-like "head" that shoots the heat rays. This, to me, is still the epitome of frightening Hollywood aliens.
This new Special Edition is loaded with a sizable amount of extras. There's two seperate commentaries; one with stars Gene Barry and Anne Robinson, and another with filmmaker/writer fans Joe Dante, Bob Burns, and Bill Warren. Also included is an hour-long documentary about the making of the movie (meticulously guided by Anne Robinson, who has remained almost an unofficial "keeper of the flame" as far as War of the Worlds fandom and information), a featurette on original author H.G. Wells, as well as an audio feature which includes the entire 1938 radio broadcast by Orson Welles. Although it's unfortunate that the original Cinemascope print hasn't been put out on DVD yet, perhaps they will in the future. Nevertheless, the print looks great here, with amazing detail and color. Oh, and the trailer is also included.
I notice that a lot of people tend to glorify one version of War of the Worlds over another, with this one receiving a fair amount of praise, and the 2005 Spielberg one getting dumped on more often than not. Whatever happened to liking all of something? I enjoy each version of the story for its own unique voice. The 1898 novel, the 1938 radio drama, the late 80's TV show, and both movie versions...are all great. Get them, because they're all classics and timecapsules of their time, and should be cherished as such.』

Chiropractic services have helped (mildly and for a short while) so I got this in-house rememdy based on reviews. Pro's: It's a quality product, robust, and appears that it will last with repeated use. Con's; So would a nice firm pillow. Don't get me wrong, I use it, especially after long days in the office. But all it does is apply a hyper-arch through the lumbar curve into the thoracic curve. It doesn't perform any magic function such as "stretch" the spine; indeed it causes posterior compression of lumbar disks when used as instructed. What it does do is serve as a firm base to relax the erector spinea (back muscles), whereupon an individual can exercise some limited hip and upper back manipulations familiar to anyone who's been to a chiropratic office. So go ahead and buy the product; I'm not mad that I did.』

I also place it on the wall while standing and use it to put pressure on my lower back. The pain is terrible when I stand, so I'm always searching for something that works when I'm upright. I have an iMac with TimeMachine, and this drive was purchased to hold the TimeMachine data. Being that it is a backup device, and that TimeMachine runs periodically at regular intervals, the drive has been powered up virtually 24/7 since it was installed.
I partitioned the drive into two segments. Mysteriously, about two weeks ago, one of the volumes disappeared. I ran Disk Utility and TechTools on it, and the reports said that it could not be repaired. So I erased it (without zeroing out the data). Last week, I was astonished to see that the volume had somehow been resurrected without me doing a darn thing to it - there it was, back again, with all the data still on it. Very odd.
About the same time that the volume disappeared, I began having problems with my Mac freezing up if left unattended for a while. This is also very odd, I have never had that sort of problem with a Mac. I actually had to resort to shutting it down when I walked away to prevent the freezes - logging out didn't even work. Disk Utility and TechTools reported that both the iMac drive and the external drive were fine. I have not downloaded anything funky from the Internet. Hmmmm...
Yesterday I decided to try simply unplugging the external drive's USB, just to see what would happen. Sur-prise, sur-prise, no more iMac freezing up. So, obviously, there is a problem with the external drive.
Unfortunately, my whole year's worth of backup data is now history, literally. I am now in the process of erasing the external drive, zeroing out the data (this takes awhile on a 1T drive!), and will try it again as a backup device to see if the problem merely was corrupted files. This solution may be extreme, but there's not much else to do if the utilities can't find anything to fix.
All in all, this is a cheap drive, and you get what you pay for. It did last longer for me than it did for some other folks, so I suppose that I shouldn't be too harsh. However, one would expect an Iomega product to be more reliable. Will update this review regarding whether erasing the disk and starting over solved the problem.

(Good HD at a Good Value) 『Had this about a month now and it's doing the job, quietly and consistently. I use this mainly for my iTunes. I have a massive collection and filled up a Maxtor terabyte HD. Or just about; it's still my back-up with about 10GB of space left. But I'll soon have to get another 1.5 TB and won't hesitate to get another of these for the task. It's a tad slower than I'm used to with the Maxtor (which has Firewire for my Mac), but I'll get used to it. Patience is a virtue. And it doesn't seem completely compatible with the sleep function (light stays on, unlike the Maxtor). But these are minor quibbles. I now have peace of mind with all my music safely in 2 locations, and the attendant hard work I've put into it cataloging everything. Not to mention all the artwork not available from iTunes (which anyway is quite often flat-out wrong) for rarities, etc. Reformatting it for Mac was a snap with the clear instructions provided. Wish it had a Firewire option, though...』
(Excellent backup device) 『This is the fourth Iomega external hard drive that I have purchased. Two are in use by other family members and this is my second - one for each computer. I have been extremely pleased in every case with the appearance, performance, and reliability of the Iomega external drives. They are very quiet and cool when operating. I do not leave them on constantly since they are used for backup and often are removed from the computer area for safety purposes. I would strongly recommend the Iomega drives.』
(Good Drive, but won't boot with win7) 『Overall, this drive works well. Great construction, good looks, and quiet drive. I bought this to store all my data when upgrading to Win7. Bad news was that my OS wouldn't boot if the drive was hooked up and on. The boot sequence would stall until I flipped the power off on the drive (GREAT feature by the way - a power switch - most ext HDs don't have that). Then the boot sequence would continue and I could turn the drive right back on. I've got a new Dell that's less than a year old. Not sure why this is a problem. Tried finding the "legacy usb" option to turn off in the BIOS, but it's not in the dell bios. This could be a Dell problem, but I haven't been able to experiment with a different brand HD. Great drive, but watch out for compatibility with Dell desktops.

When I purchased my last computer, I made the mistake of getting a wireless keyboard, which did not have an option of ergonomic configuration. My previous keyboard was ergonomic, split. I spend upwards of eight hours a day writing, or keying. My left hand was getting numb and a little painful. The numbness and pain have not been an issue using the ergonomic keyboard. I find that my typing skills increase as well.

(Good start) 『This is a very excellent keyboard. I was ready to be disappointed because of the various reviews that I read, but I have to say that I don't agree with any of them, at least no 100%.
I've heard rumors of the keys being hard to press, which is all together untrue. I have had no issues pressing the keys whatsoever, and I've found them enjoyable. They aren't rough on my hands at all and I really don't see how they could be hard to press. The spacebar, however, does take some time to become accustomed to. Because of the curve of the keyboard it makes the spacebar hard to press because you're not really hitting it in the center and it's not balanced very well. I think this could have been solved with two separate keys for it. Although it is annoying, it is nothing that can't be over seen for the overall superb quality of the product.
I did find the installation of the software annoying. Like anyone else would do, I plugged in the keyboard and booted. Within moments I found that I couldn't type anything, but I had a log in password to type... I had to grab another keyboard and restart. This is really more of my fault, but I think it should have more plug-n-play capabilities. (Amazing little bag) 『After trying out several different cases/sleeves for my Toshiba NB205 and being disappointed with each, I stumbled upon this Case Logic Notebook sleeve. It has been an exceptional choice in that it stretches nicely and so will easily accommodate the 6-cell battery which extends out from the back of my netbook. The pocket on the front on the bag is just large enough to squeeze in a mouse and the charging cord for my computer, although it is very "lumpy" when everything is zipped in. It definitely helps to wind up the cord prior to storing it.

(Packs a punch) 『This is my third iPod, the others being a 40GB classic (hard drive model) and an 8GB 2g Nano (my wife's). I chose the Nano because I wanted something small and vibration tolerant that I could listen to while active (doing chores, exercising, etc.).
The Good: * Simple, sleek, and cool--worthy of the Apple name. * Small size and relatively large display. * Navigation is straightforward, and syncing through iTunes is simple. * The radio feature with live pause is great. Now when I'm interrupted I can just pause and resume without missing the broadcast. * The video camera is a nice addition. As long as you realize it's more about convenience than quality you should be satisfied. On the Mac, your videos show up in iPhoto once you've enabled the Nano for disk use. * The silver color coordinates nicely with aluminum iMacs.
The Bad: * I want a dedicated volume control. Yes, I know this would interrupt Apple's minimalist design philosophy, but some functions deserve their own physical controls. There are times when the scroll wheel controls other functions (menu navigation, traversing saved radio stations) and thus you can't directly, immediately change the volume, which I find annoying. Instead, I have to pause the unit first or navigate to "Now Playing", which is a hassle. * The Apple earbuds aren't going to win any audiophile awards. Their sound is pretty lousy, actually, but they're fine for listening when I'm engaged in an active task and don't have my full attention turned to listening. * It doesn't charge from certain older iPod accessories. I have a JBL Soundstage and an iHome under-counter player, and neither can charge/control the Nano. Apparently they use the Firewire rather than USB interface internally, which newer iPods don't support this anymore. You can still play the iPod through the devices though. * It's too easy to accidentally cover the camera lens when taking a video. I've found holding the Nano at the opposite end or along the edges works best, but it's a bit awkward due to the small size of the device. * VoiceOver is an interesting feature, but I turned it off because it kept getting unintentionally triggered when I scanned forward/back in a track (mostly for podcasts). * 16MB is probably enough for most people, but I have a large music collection and would like a larger memory option. Unfortunately this means moving to a bulkier model (the Touch or Classic).』

All in all, I say: If you want this as an interim device to take jogging, or you need an iPod that you can slip in the pocket of tight jeans, get this one. (Very poor Netflix performance; overall disappointment so far.) 『I've had this player for several days now. Blu-Ray playback appears to be good, although I don't really have anything to compare it to. But so far its other attributes leave a great deal to be desired.
Netflix playback is especially poor. I waited to buy this unit for its Netflix capability to kick in, and was using the Roku HD player in the meantime. Even with a wired connection, the Sony's Netflix HD content playback is noticeably sluggish and jerky, almost to the point of being unwatchable, compared to the Roku player connected wirelessly to the same router. I watched parts of the same video on each player and the difference is not subtle; it is pronounced.
Also, the upscaled DVD picture on this player is very, VERY soft, almost to the point of looking out of focus, even with the TV's Sharpness setting turned up to maximum. This is in comparison to the Sony DVP-NS700H upscaling DVD player I had been using previously, which appears to have a sharper, crisper image; again, the difference is noticeable.
I'm going to try a few more DVDs and see if Sony and/or Netflix tech support can address the streaming problem, before I give up and return the unit. I had hoped this player would be a nice addition to my BRAVIA setup (46" Z4100 LCD TV), but so far it's let me down.
UPDATE: I called Sony and went through three levels of support. They agreed with my description and assessment of the Netflix HD picture quality and told me there was nothing that could be done about it. I also called Netflix and they couldn't help either; none of their suggestions worked. If I can't resolve this myself I'm going to have to return the player.』
(BDP-N460 Works Great With My System) 『I'd been putting off getting a blu-ray player because of all the bad things I'd been hearing about them. Well, I'm very happy with this player. It's works great and I'm having lots of fun with it.
No unacceptable slowness. NO HDMI connection problems with my 4 year old Sony KD-34XBR960 TV.
I'm using the coax digital audio to connect to my receiver. The manual states that, the PCM signals, output from the DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL/COAXIAL) jack, will be output as 48 kHz/16 bit instead of 96 kHz/24 bit if, the source is copyprotected. An HDMI receiver would insure the best sound quality. However, I've been experiencing really excellent sound. I have a huge sound system and really notice the improvement in blu-ray sound. I don't feel a need to get an HDMI receiver.
The only problem I ran into so far was with some 4:3 aspect ratio DVD's. To play these properly you need to set one of the player's settings to "Fixed Aspect Ratio". Although this worked on some DVD's, it didn't work on others. I found that if you just press stop and then play again, it would adjust to the correct aspect ratio. I don't know if this is the player's fault or the DVD. Maybe a firmware upgrade witll fix it. The work around is not that big of a deal anyway.
Blu-Ray picture quality is great, of course. But I was impressed that even DVD's look better. I did not expect this since I already have a couple good DVD players (Oppo and Sony). My TV does a much better job of upscaling than my DVD players. This Sony Blu-Ray Player seems to upscale as good or better that my TV. Very smooth motion and all around picture quality.』
(Awesome Media Center!) 『After much research I decided on the Sony BDP-460. Set up was super easy due to reading previous reviews. Hooked it up to Apple Airport express bridging to my wireless network. The N460 went to the internet without any problems, got the firmware update in minutes. Blue Ray disk loaded in 45 seconds.
The image quality is of course unbeatable.
Netflix, Amazon on demand took a few minutes to register -- I had to sign in via computer on both services etc. but once that was done I was good to go.
Having tested both Netflix and Amazon streaming, I much prefer the Amazon signal. The Amazon HD stream is very impressive on this machine via HDMI!
There are a bunch of other streaming services that come with this thing that I haven't even gotten around to testing yet. Overall it's an awesome Blue Ray / Internet media center.』
(4 stars rather than 5 stars because of YouTube) 『Sony Bravia-Sync made it VERY easy to hook up the Sony BDP-N460 to my Sony Bravia KDL-32XBR6 HDTV. I used Mediabridge HDMI and Ethernet Cables (from Amazon).
The Mediabridge cables came in cardboard boxes that were easy to open and recyclable. Both the Sony BDP-460 and the Sony KDL-32XBR are Energy-Star rated.
Sony recommends buying a Sony USM2GL external memory to "to enjoy additional content (such as BONUS VIEW/BD-LIVE) on certain Blu-ray Disc titles".
It was VERY easy to set up Amazon Video-On-Demand, but it is much easier to search Amazon Videos-On-Demand using a computer than it is to use the "search" function on the Sony BDP-N460. After using a computer to find the video that I wanted to watch, the video was VERY easy to play on the Sony BDP-N460.
The 'search" function on the Sony BDP-N460 uses an onscreen keyboard that is like a touch-tone telephone dial. When searching, you cannot enter more than 19 characters, including spaces. This seems to be a major fault that hopefully will be corrected soon. The onscreen keyboard also does not include some characters that I have used in my various passwords.
YouTube is particularly awkward when using the Sony BDP-N460. Sony should adopt the 15 year old technology used in WebTV and MSNTV2 units.
