(Gets WAY too hot!)

『I bought this coffee maker to save counter space. It is quite small, and it does make coffee, but it heats up the coffee way too hot and gives it a burned taste. It helps a little to use refrigerated water, and to unplug it immediately after it finishes brewing, but it still burns the coffee and stays ridiculously hot for a long time after it's unplugged. I wish I had bought the stovetop version and not sacrificed quality for convenience.』

『On Sept. 3rd I made this purchase. Sometime it worked and sometime it did not! I returned it to Applica Consumer Products on Oct 12th. I am still waiting for a replacement because, "It is on backorder." Today, 11/23, I called for the sixth time. I received the same story.They're coming in in a week. When I asked how do I get a refund, I was told they don't make refunds. You don't need the aggravation. Go to a store and buy it. If it doesn't work, you can take it back and get your money!!

(Didn't last very long)

『I bought this coffee pot about a year ago and only used it occasionally. The last time I tried to use it the part where you plug the cord into the base of the coffee pot collapsed, making the pot unusable. I thought I was getting a quality coffee pot that would last for years, like my old Farberware percolator did, but apparently they are not made as well as they used to be.』

『This percolator makes the best coffee and keeps it piping hot. Comes with a heavy duty cord. Easy to clean and takes up little room on your counter. I have had one for several years. I purchased this one for my mother after she kept exclaiming how much she loves the coffee I make. She was so happy to receive it.』

『To be honest, I do not own this specific model. My review is about what looked like and was sold as the exact same pot a few years ago. Correction, the three pots I bought a few years ago.
When three pots failed (coffee not hot, electic sparks, heating element went) I did a little research. I do not have all the detail handy anymore, but I remember, the origial Farberware company was a privately held company located in the Bronx, NY. The original owners chose to sell the company instead of giving in to the landlord; do not believe it was a product or employee issue.

I believe licensing / ownership of the brand name changed a number of times. Today it is owned by Lifetime Brands, Inc., and the Meyer Co. holds the license to market products under the Farberware brand name. I think I got all this right; who owns and who licenses the right to market products under a brand name gets complicated.

Serve it to say, the Farberware brand our mothers knew and loved is not the brand you see on the shelves today. It's a darn shame. That pot made the best cup of cofee you could get, and it was HOT!

P.S. I purchased and had to replace/ eventually return the Presto Percolator I purchased at WalMart as well. I no longer trust electronics sold by WalMart as I do not believe they meet the same spes as a similar looking models sold in department stores. I might be wrong, but too many returns to trust further.

『What on earth was "Sting" thinking when he decided to pursue these classic songs of Dowland? How arrogant of him to think that his high status among the (low brow) world of pop somehow entitles him to pursue true music. Having listened for years to glorious renditions of Dowland songs from world-class counter tenors I wept tears of sadness listening to the symbol of the demise of culture that is this album.

But, then again, perhaps it will encourage fans of Sting to pursue better recordings of Dowland songs. That can only be good thing, I suppose.

Absolutely disturbing....』

『You've got to be kidding me. The emperor has no clothes! I dont care if people rate this review as unhelpful, I really do not see the attraction in or to this 'voice'. It falls short. Same of the 'deep bass' moments sound like a drunk striving, the rest is scratchy and as a selection of 17th century song unquote blind random selection might have worked better. Does Sting think he is a male equivalent of Nora Jones?』

『I have listened to Sting and The Police for years, I am a huge fan. I have also listened to Dowland for those same years. I play some Dowland on classical guitar.
That said, I must say that the sum does not add up. It is simply not Sting's style. In some places he sounds forced, trying to "get it".
I listened to it, I tried to like it, but honestly, I couldn't. I went back to listen Dowland by Julian Bream or Paul O'Dette, and Sting on his usual style. I could not understand the reason for this record. Honestly, the Battle Galliard seems to be played on a mandoline instead of a lute. Some of Sting vocalizations reminded me of Finding Nemo's character Dorys when she tried to speak like a whale. Difference is, I laughed hard when Ellen Degeneres did it, but here, I just shuddered and pressed fast forward. It's THAT bad. This kind of experiment is more at home in the court of Jethro Tull. It's more their turf. But this sounded as inappropriate as Liza Minelli singing "We are the champions" (shuddered again).
Ok, I think you get the idea.』

(Sting meets Dowland halfway)

『If I did not hold Sting's 2006 Deutsche Grammophon recording of the 16-17th centuries' John Dowland's lute-accompanied music in my hands, I would not believe that the British rock star had truly attempted to pull this one off.

But I do, and he has.

And not to bad effect, either. Unlike may Sting critics who seem to think the man should stay in his rut, I admire his constant rebellion against the artistic expectations to which we admirers of his art may want to hold him. I like his audacious impertinence.

I just didn't expect *this*.

Yet Sting being Sting is rarely a bad thing, not least here. His 'unschooled tenor', as he puts it, may in some respects sound more like Dowland's work would have in the 17th century than how we'd expect it to flow in the 20th. But leaving that point aside, Sting is a great narrator.

What he has accomplished in this unlikely CD is to narrate the Dowland phenomenon for many of us who would otherwise never have known him or his art. Sting's recitations of Dowland's letter (one critic unjustly calls it 'murmured') are actually my favorite part of the album's 23 tracks.

You may want quickly to return to Sting and/or the Police doing what they do best. That will be quite all right. But don't miss what the man can do once in a while down at the end of a blind alley.』
『In choosing to cover the music of John Dowland (1563-1626), who is known as the "melancholy madrigalist" from his output of cheerful ditties like "Flow My Tears," Police bandleader Sting has entered into a whole new realm of austere eeriness. Originally inspired by the gift of a lute, the rock superstar and activist sings the songs, deliciously sweet and tender or spirited by turn, accompanying himself, with Edin Karamazov sitting on lute and archlute. For listeners accustomed to hearing material of this period interpreted by rigorously trained early music stylists, especially countertenors and the like, Sting's sometimes tight-jawed, chest-heavy vocals may seem amateurish. It's undeniable that in four-part harmonies, the singer, tightly overdubbed, comes across like a combination of the Swingle Singers and Queen (meaning Freddy Mercury and crew, NOT the first Elizabeth). But it's important to remember that music of this period was routinely heard as a casual diversion in private homes, even more often than at Court. It was considered a crucial social skill to be able to join in with an adequate degree of skill, but not everyone was able to negotiate the perilous melodic twists and turns typical of the era's music. With this in mind, the overall effect is of a candle-lit, postprandial entertainment in the home of an English gentleman. Muttered readings from Dowland's letters and brief snippets of sampled birdsong aside, it is a courageous effort, displaying heartfelt admiration for the composer and a considerable degree of earnest charm. --Christina Roden』

『CeU's eponymous debut album broke all the sonic boundaries in terms of experimental samba, reggae, and marchinhas. It was beautiful and so incredibly unique that it took me many repeat listenings to really wrap my head around all of it. And, despite this, it was not so wildly experimental that it could not be played in a room full of drunks, executives, and stodgy family members.

Vagarosa continues this experimental yet easy-to-swallow tradition. But wait... am I not forgetting something? The sounds of CeU's 2008 side project, Sonantes, are also highly prevalent. Vagarosa is as much a product of that as it is of CeU's previous "solo" album, which was in itself a heavily collaborative effort.

in a nutshell, CeU is a ridiculously innovative artist who believes in giving credit to every percussionist, string intrumentalist, and backup vocalist that she works with. So while this is, on the surface, another CeU album, it is really an evolution of many different styles, applying hairpin curves to traditional Latin music using an eclectic range of musicians.

Try getting a female pop singer to think this expansively about music. It's just not going to happen. Which is why the world needs CeU.』

(A Little Night Music in the Tropics)

『CeU's "Vagarosa" is an electrifying follow-up to her self-titled debut two years ago. She has honed her craft considerably, experimenting with a variety of sounds. Her debut was perfect coffee shop music--this one is more dreamlike, with the Moog and the Hammond organ. Imagine Bat for Lashes' "Two Suns" if it had a samba/reggae beat. "Vagarosa" is perfect for lounging and dreaming. Enjoy it with a cup of capirinha or Brazilian coffee.

"Vagarosa" opens with the simple "Sobre O Amor E Seu Trabalho Silencioso"--it's basically a duet between CeU and her guitarist. "Cangote" has a rippling reggae beat. The mellotron is featured in "Comadi." "Nascente" has a strong horn section,with a retro sound to it. CeU has rightly been equated with Gal Costa,the diva of Brazil's psychedelic Tropicalista movement. "Grains de Beaute" has a simple,acoustic beauty. "Ponteiro" evokes carnival music. "Rosa Menina Rosa" is lilting and dreamlike. The closing, "Espaconave" samples Amazon rainforest sounds. The riffs are reminiscent of Santana's jam sessions.

"Vagarosa" is hardly a sophomore slump. It's psychedelic samba! Venture into this colorful rainforest of music.』

Wow. This record floored me, starting with the second track, "Cangote", a heavy, spooky dub reggae tune, mixed with Brazilian harmonics and some tweaky outside elements, including an Arabic-flavored lead organ and mellotron riffs that bring to mind the Ethiopian groove of Mahmoud Ahmed. It's so totally cool. The track that follows, "Comadi," also shows a strong familiarity with the best classic Jamaican dub, although this time with a ska-like uptempo vibe. Maybe Sly&Robbie never got to cut a session with Gal Costa back in the day, but if they had, it might have been this good. The tracks that followed were equally rich and rewarding, blending samba, jazz, bossa nova, indie rock and more dub in an entirely satisfying, confident mix. Along for the ride are Sao Paulo scenesters such as Gui Amabis, Curumin and Beto Villares, as well as a number of guest performers, including old-time soul star Luiz Melodia, who is surprisingly good in his duet cameo. Although there's still some of the sexy, mellow electronica cool of Ceu's labelmate Bebel Gilberto in the mix, these guys have gone way past the chill-room club mix mentality, and they're making some of the most adventurous yet sensuous music modern music coming out of Brazil today. (More sofa than party time but great new Brasilian fusion!)

『Ceu is one of the new wave of Brasilian female vocal talents and two years after her 2007 debut comes another collection of well-crafted, lazy, occasionally edgy, soulful grooves. The album title actually translates as `slow, easygoing and leisurely' so you get the idea, it's more sofa than party time.

The album kicks off in mellow acoustic style with Ceu extolling the joy of the invisible chemistry of love accompanied only by the distinctive Brasilian sound of the cavaquinho before the mood darkens slightly with `Cangote', her sweet vocals sitting on a jazzy dub reggae rhythm as turntable scratches, melodica and organ snippets swirl around the song's extremities to great effect giving us our first hint of Ceu's adventurous musicality.

Ceu isn't just another love obsessed singer songwriter though. The swinging reggae lilt of `Comadi' is a perfect frame as Ceu laments how much women have to struggle for their position in life, unfortunately still an everyday battle in Brasil's largely machismo society.

`Nascente' is another great example of acoustic instruments and electronic witchcraft combining in perfect harmony as Ceu decides to get all sultry and mysterious whilst some great jazz trumpet stabs away in the background.

Some of the albums most pleasing moments come though when the plug is pulled and Ceu's soulful voice sits on top of some plain old simple instruments as with `Grains de Beaute' and `Vira Lata', both tracks concerning affairs of the heart.

If fact the album is a great blend of the classic sweet Brasilian vocals and traditional instruments we know and love coupled with some pleasing fusions and experimental touches that give the album extra depth and interest.

From start to finish the album sucks you in and takes you through the musical world and many influences of an artist currently on top of her game backed by a wonderful cast of top Brasilian musicians and producers including Curumin, Pupillo and Dengue.

『"Vagarosa" far surpasses her self-titled first release, "CéU," which was a truly excellent CD itself. The arrangements on "Vagarosa" go well beyond what one generally associates with "Brazilian" music, giving the whole affair a fresh and universal flavor. Many of the rhythms seem more tango-influenced than samba-like, which also makes this album a bit multiculti and difficult to pigeon-hole. Moreover, it is unusual to hear so much organ playing in any Latin music, which gradually eliminated any expectation I had when I first put this CD into my player. The closest comparison I can come up with is the music of Julieta Venegas, especially her "MTV Unplugged" and one of my all-time favorite CDs, "Limon y Sal."

CéU is no dilettante or overnight wonder. Born Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças, her father is a composer and musicologist, and she studied the classic and popular music of Brazil and music theory before embarking on her own career as a musician. Her serious study of music shows in the complexity of the compositions, arrangement, and choices of instrumentation on "Vagarosa." While some would classify the music of CéU as "pop," it really deserves a bit more attention to the details than that. In fact, "Vagarosa" ranges from rock and jazz to Latin to a bit of experimentation and, in the end, offers an exciting musical journey. I generally don't go for hyperbole, but in my opinion this CD deserves more than the five stars allowed here.』

『Peyroux is one jazz chanteuse with mass appeal - her mix of new tunes and familiar covers are seamlessly put together to a cohesive whole.

Her own compositions like 'I'm Alright' fit right into the blend, with singer-songwriter classics like Tom Waits's '(Looking for) the Heart of Saturday Night' and Joni Mitchell's 'River' (on which k.d. lang guests to give some street cred), along with jazz standards like 'Summer Wind' popularised by Frank Sinatra in the 60s.

『Smokey-voiced chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux's third CD is a lovely collection of after-hours ruminations and should confirm her rise to fame. Credit producer Larry Klein for doing a bang-up job with the album's sound: the elegant, pared-down arrangements are all brushed drums, acoustic guitars, and cool organ licks. But of course it's Peyroux's voice that brings it all home--preferably one where the shades are drawn, embers are smoldering in the fireplace, and the white wine is kept dry. Two-thirds of the songs are well-chosen covers, including a duet with k.d. lang on Joni Mitchell's "River"; a relaxed version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," fromMidnight Cowboy; a delicately lilting samba take on Leonard Cohen and Anjani Thomas's title track; Serge Gainsbourg's "La Javanaise," performed in the original French; and Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," fromModern Times. The four originals, all coauthored by Peyroux, easily keep up with such august company, especially "I'm All Right"--written with Klein and Walter Becker, it captures the easy sophistication of Becker's regular band, Steely Dan. Fans of Norah Jones (whose collaborator Jesse Harris cowrote three of the songs) should gobble up this album, but Peyroux is no mere imitator: She's her own, very real thing.--Elisabeth Vincentelli

『Although Rice Ccoker has a low price it has the following problems:

Warm feature overcooks rice

Flimsy lid construction seems loose

Digital timer did not seem to work

have to unplug cooker after each use』

『Works well,used it for a Red Beans&Rice competition where we needed 12 gallons of beans and 5 gallons of rice. The rice was a bit gummy, even after washing it before cooking and letting it sit in the steamer for a while, but I haven't taken the time to try some different rice/water ratios. I just used the supplied cup and then added water to the line. I will say that if you are making a lot of sushi, this is your rice cooker! It is also teflon, so it's no stick!』
